Why Islanders traded Noah Dobson, not rebuilding, Patrick Roy, more: Catching up with Mathieu Darche

– Dobson trade was basically purely for money reasons. Darche didn’t think he was worth what he was asking for.
– Roy has 3 years left on his deal. Him and Darche had never met before he got the job, but they’ve worked great together so far.
– Darche isn’t interested in a rebuild because he doesn’t think that’s the way to go in the NHL. Cites the Caps as an example.
Call it what you want but we are literally rebuilding. This year will be a step back in terms of points (and missing playoffs) but two steps forward in terms of this new identity Darche is building for this franchise. I’m so excited.
If it was a rebuild, they would be trading barzal no question about it. Might trade an expiring contract or dman this year but that’s expected with a team that won’t be making the playoffs
i mean, he left it unsaid, right? it was the quiet part at the end. If YOU THINK you are in the middle or front of a competitve window you’re not telling your captain going into a walk year “lets see how this season goes.”
Acts non verba guys. Everyone on 2 year deals. no Extension talks with 44/27. Dobber deal. He canmot say we are trating it down and hes likely not going scorched earth but he is in the make it younger/faster/more analytically driven/controlled cost roster. its a reshape. gonna take a bit, but hes got the right idea.
They just picked 1st overall in the NHL draft after trading Brock Nelson and Noah Dobson for draft picks.

Darche: “Oh me? I don’t do rebuilds! Too cool.”
Peak delusion.
