REKAP: ⚾️ Chicago Cubs 2-1 loss to Washington Nationals. ‘Just rest up & get ready for wild card.’

Welcome into the recap of the Cubs 2 to1
loss to the Washington Nationals Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field. I’m David Kaplan.
It’s brought to you by our great partners at Winrust. They are the exclusive home of
Cubs Checking. You can either click the QR code on your screen or winrust.com/cubs
for your very own Cubs checking account. That’s just a terrible loss when your offense is
that inept again. Yesterday 11, today three hits, 0 for six with men at scoring position. You get
one run on the day. Your starting pitching was excellent. Matthew Boyd rallied from a tough first
inning. Settled in and gave you seven outstanding innings and you do nothing nothing to support him.
I also have a question for management that maybe they can answer, but we’ll figure that out in a
second. Let’s get into it. It’s brought to you by our great partners at Tasty Trade. Stocks,
crypto, futures, options, whatever you trade, you should do it at tastyrade.com. Folks, when
you get three hits, you’re not going to win a ball game. And one of those came in the ninth inning
when the Cubs had the tying run at second base and could not get him home. But here’s how this game
went down. First inning, Al Farro singles to right center. That’s after two rocket hits by Wood and
Abrams. Abrams comes in to score. One- nothing. And then somehow someway, Matthew Boyd wriggles
off the hook. Bottom second, Carson Kelly infield, ground ball that brings home Pete Cormstrong who
had doubled. And it is a 1-1 ball game. And then in the fourth, Dalon Lyle homers to right field.
2-1. That would be all the scoring. That would be it. Cubs did very, very little with this lineup
today. Uh, highly disappointing. You had Michael Bush. Uh, he had two walks and an 0 for one.
Carlos Santana had a a one at bat uh as a pinch hitter and then went into play first. He had a
strikeout. Ian Happen 0 for four. Suzuki a one for four. PCA the double that I talked about a one for
two. He had to leave the game, foul the ball off his knee. Craig Council said X-ray is negative.
He’s dayto day with a knee contusion. So, I would imagine he won’t play tomorrow. We’ll see. You’re
going to the playoffs as a wild card. You’re not going to run down the Brewers. So, let’s just get
that out there. I’ve been saying it for a while. I don’t think you’re going to. I kept holding out
hope they’re not going to. So, give PCA time to make sure that knee is right for the playoffs. And
here’s my other question. Kyle Tucker, Kyle Tucker has now been out for a few days. I know you can
backdate him on the IIL. Why would you not just say, “Hey, Kyle, we’re going to put you with your
calf injury on the injured list. You’re going to sit for 10 days and we’re just going to get it
as healthy as we can going into the playoffs.” I don’t understand why they haven’t done that.
I really don’t. Jesse Rogers, my guy from ESPN, such an awesome reporter, said Owen Casey’s
back in Chicago in case they do. Kyle Tucker, he didn’t play again today. So why would you not
take all the risk out of it and put him on the IIL and just air on the side of caution? Doesn’t
make sense to me. But again, I’ll never be a major league manager or front office executive. I just
call it as I see it. Uh, you had no hits out of Carson Kelly. Another no hit day for Willie Castro
who flew out to end the ball game with a tying run on second. No hit day for Dansby Swanson who did
have an opportunity but with men on but could not deliver and you had a no-h hit day for Matt Shaw.
That means it’s a three for 27 day for the Chicago Cubs and they lose 2-1. Let’s take a look at the
pitching matchup we call winging it. brought to you by our great partners at Hooters. 11 Chicago
area locations. Lord, five and two/3 of two hit, one run it’s earned, 7K season high for him. Four
walk baseball and then they used four relievers for the Cubs. Matthew Boyd falls to 12 and eight.
Seven innings, seven hits, two runs there, earned three Ks, did not walk a man in allowed that Lyall
home run. That was the game winner. Pomeran’s and Palencia finished it off. Both had perfect innings
with two strikeouts. I believe Pomeran’s will start on a bullpen day tomorrow according to Craig
Council. Uh our look ahead, here’s what’s coming up, folks. This is what you got to deal with. It’s
brought to you by our great partners at Studio41 Home Remodeling Showroomstudio41.com. This is
the schedule that you’re going to deal with. you’re going to go after tomorrow. And I’ve been
saying you had to sweep this series if you had any hope of running down the Milwaukee Brewers. And
it’s a series you should have swept. You can’t be that freaking inept offensively. Uh and then you
got to go to Atlanta. So you go to the Braves, three night games, day off, come home,
three with the Tampa Bay Rays in Chicago, and then you go to Pittsburgh for three, go to
Cincinnati for four, and then you get a day off. that is what you’re staring at and you’re going
in as probably the number one wild card. Uh you’d have to really really mess up to not be the top
spot in the NL wild card which means the games will be played at Wrigley Field. Put Kyle Tucker
on the IIL. Get him right. He’s been injured a lot all season and then PCA came out but they said
he’s dayto-day. Give him a few days. Just give him a few days. Just get healthy and get right
for postseason baseball. That’s it. Cubs lose two to one. That’s a bad loss, folks, because
again, your offense was horrible. Take that.

A pathetic loss to the lowly #WashingtonNationals on Saturday by the #ChicagoCubs. Their ‘inept’ offense scored just a run, and Matthew Boyd gave the rotation 7 strong innings and deserved a better fate. The Cubs went 3-27 as an offense on the day and at this point, Kap says they should just rest up and get ready for the Wild Card, cause that’s where they’re headed. They’re not chasing down the #MilwaukeeBrewers at this point. #KyleTucker didn’t play yet again and Kap wonders why he hasn’t been put on the IL, especially when #OwenCaissie is in town in case of just that. #PCA left the game after fouling a ball off of his knee and is day to day. A bad loss to a bad team. Simple as that.

  1. IF( (they hold on for the first Wild Card spot), you don't think the Padres are going to come in the Wrigley and sweep two games, you haven't been paying attention.

  2. Maybe it's not worth for me to be cussing at the Cubs when they lose games like today to a bad team. Cubs just need to play 500 ball and get to the playoffs and get experience. Offense needs to get better for next year. This year, offense is too inconsistent and now PCA left the game with a knee contusion and Kyle Tucker is hurt. Suzuki looks lost at the plate.

  3. Nats got more hits in the first inning than the Cubs did all game. The Cubs live and die by the home run which is troubling. Come playoff time the pitching is better, the weather is cooler, and the wind tends to blow in. You have to find another way. There's no reason they shouldn't have been able to scratch out a win today. Ridiculous.

  4. This offense is GARBAGE with or without Tucker. Before the All Star break all of the “experts” were hailing them as the best in the league. They were this all along; just all got hot all within the same timeframe. A good team should score more than 2 against bad teams period

  5. I would not IL Kyle Tucker. If he doesn't need 10 days the Cubs have to start playing him. They need the #1 wildcard spot and that's not a lock. The Padres will be within 4 after tonight. Additionally now PCA will probably be out a bit. Hopefully Tucker will at least be able to DH tomorrow

  6. This injury may teach PCA not to swing at balls aimed at his nuts. Also, when is Suzuki going to get a bench "reset"? He has like one HR since the ASB. They also hit into a bunch of double plays today.

  7. Terrible loss, at least losing 1 to Colo was on the road. Team can’t score consistently but yet CC puts the same garbage guys out there day after day. Put Tucker on IL already, bring back Caissie, hopefully PCA can’t play Sunday so CC HAS to play one of the kids. Enough already.

  8. Clownsell is one of thr worst managers for in game decisions I have ever seen, probably excellent at getting his teams prepared for the season, running, defense, etc, but I believe his ridiculous in game decisions have cost the Cubs at least 6 or more games

  9. some 1 could offer the cubs a million bux if they'd win 5 inna row. they'd NEVER collect. this team sucks worse than the Lee Elia team. never make the playoffs.

  10. You know you fibs are all the same. When you win, the Cubs are the greatest team on the face of the Earth and when you lose, you don't give credit to the other team. You always tear down your own team and when they lose they suck. You know all these other teams practice too. They're professional baseball teams. Sometimes they're going to beat you. That's why Chicago fans are the worst in the country. Whine when you win, whine when you lose?😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  11. Cubs need to realize their lineup is tired and barely hanging on! Get Cassie, in Right field, Ballesteros at DH and give Suzuki a week off. Castro and Santana are not the answer and if CC pinch hits Turner again, I hope they fire his ass!!!

  12. A lot of changes next year and unfortunately we cannot get rid of Jed but maybe Counsell ? We need a bona fide leadoff hitter set lineups every day and people who get on base not try to swing for the fences to garner a large contract these people make enough money

  13. things are seriously wrong with MLB. players look tired, and worn out. pitchers can't pitch more than 5 innings and complete games are as rare as a $1000 bill. in spite of more safety gear than ever, more players are getting injured. too many rookie mistakes are being made. little league players often look more professional than MLB players. too many players are on the DL. yes, that's right the DL. get back to calling it that. stop with the calling hits "knocks". try watching the games with the sound off OR listen to the game on the radio or internet. the playbyplay calling is superrior to tv. reduce the number of games in a season by 1/4. None of this playoffs stuff. Whomever has the best record in each league wins the division. world series should be over at the end of september, 1st week in october at the latest. bring on some NEW managers and stop recycling the same old stiffs.

  14. Castro is like 6-47 over the last 30 days. He's a middle infielder. And you play him in RF while Alcántara sits? Tomorrow, I fully expect Happ in LF, Seiya in RF, Castro in CF for PCA and Santana or Turner at DH. (And yeah, I do also expect Tucker to be held out longer because they refuse to IL him now… and then expect them to call up Caissie and have him sit too instead of letting him play).

I think that's the most frustrating part: we made a big deal how we plan to hold onto our prospects at the deadline because they are so good. Well, we need them NOW. They can't do any worse than our bench guys. Play the kids, Craig! And let them play the whole game.

  15. Cubs have to be among the leaders in hitting into double plays. How ‘bout a sacrifice bunt once in a while? “Nope,” Craig says, “We’ll just keep pounding the ball sharply into the ground right at somebody instead.”

  16. Kap, they broke you. Counsell with a get away day lineup on Saturday. Playing Castro every day is insane. Only to justify Hoyer’s idiotic trade. Two months of Castro for two prospects. And two more prospects for Soroka who was good for 2 innings. What a genius. Might as well sit Suzuki and Tucker and PCA to reset. They won’t.

  17. We have the Bears so why do we need a bunch of bad picks by Hoyer and Counsell's blunders. Can we bring back Dave Parker or Smokey Burgess? No. So we're screwed because $Ricketts$ gave an unnecessary extension to Hoyer.
