Dwight Howard to his former coach, Stan Van Gundy: “Because of you, I am in the Hall of Fame. As I’ve said before, there is no Dwight Howard without Stan Van Gundy… I still remember, in the playoffs, you had us doing plays for guys who never even got in the game.”

  1. >I still remember, in the playoffs, you had us doing plays for guys who never even got in the game

    Yeah um…….maybe that’s not a good thing?

  2. I thought Dwight did a hell of a job with his speech. I can’t believe some of those jokes didn’t land with the audience because they were honestly funny.

SVG was definitely more than a little abrasive back in the day, and there were definite issues between them. But time heals.

  3. This reminds me of when Michael Jordan took over the Washington Wizards he hired Doug Collins to be the head coach even though people thought he had him fired in Chicago even though the Bulls went to the Eastern Conference Finals with Collins as the coach.

  4. When Stan mouths, “You never know!” along with him… 🥹 how can you not be romantic about basketball?

  5. It’s true too. Dwight was so raw and they had to design the roster around him and how his skills were developing.

People underrate SVG, but to me he was always as equal of the reason why the Magic went to the Finals as Dwight and Hedo.

  6. It’s a damn shame that video of him putting his arm around him and Stan just finished telling the media he wants him fired.

  7. I’m glad to see the Dwight grew up enough to understand that while he didn’t get along with Stan at the time, he was a good coach for him. Seeing SVG smile like that was great!

  8. It’s pretty funny some of you can’t realize that people can grow, can change their minds, people can have act in bad way, people can have a beef, act like a bitch and change lol.

  9. Stan said my all time favorite sports quote to a reporter after a really close game once

“Write the story when the ball is in the air.”

  10. lol. Rashard Lewis tested positive for performance enhancing drugs like 2 months after the Magic made the finals in 2009. Hedo Turkoglu also got caught using too at some point.

  11. Dwight’s speech was good, he snaked Stan Van Gundy but it seems with hindsight and age he’s learned he made mistakes with SVG as a young star but Stan has an ego himself, there’s a reason nobody on the Miami Heat shed any tears when Riley fired him and took over, and to Stan’s credit he’s effusive in his praise for Dwight as a media guy

  12. Didn’t get to watch it live, but I’m willing to be Shaq didnt honor his word and show up in that dress
