Nationals vs. Cubs Game Highlights (9/6/25) | MLB Highlights

The nationals manager for 2.5 seasons. Davey Johnson passed away a steadying presence, a great personality, no nonsense, but a lot of laughs with Davey Johnson as well. A great man, a great baseball man. Gone at the age of 82 Davey Johnson, Matthew Boyd on the mound as we get ready for baseball. And you look at the overall numbers 159 and one third innings, an all star appearance in the majors in, er, a CJ Abrams back in the familiar leadoff position right on time and a drive to right center field first pitch of the game into the Ivy CJ Abrams. And for him, double number 30 that’s how you like to start it. Welcome back down and in on a fastball right here, dropped ahead on it and CJ CJ now, two for six against him. Here’s James Wood and the pitch swung on a line drive base, hit through the hole to the left Abrams froze on contact so he goes to third and stops there and the Nats coming out aggressive here against boy two pitches to sharp base hits. Here’s Alfaro his second games of national pitch of the way, swung on a looping liner out of the leaping second baseman Horner, a base hit to right center field on at first alfaro , his second RB I and his second hit in five at bats as a national three pitches, three hits and a run on the board. It’s the nationals one and the Cubs nothing. The nationals have the bases loaded after the single by Lyle just one away here in the top of the 1st 1 to 0 lead and Dylan Cruz will stand in swing and a miss by Cruz strike three as Boyd zips a fastball by him two away big strikeout as Boyd delivers Nunez swings, chops one up the middle, backhanded by Horner the foot, the Swanson at second for the force and Boyd works out of the jam. Brad Lord right now his 15th start of the season 44th game 4 to 8. It’s been a rough last two starts, 13 earned runs combined between the Rays and the Yankees for brad Lord. That one misses and Busch will take his base. Josh Bell holding the runner at first the pitch swing and a miss he struck him out, came back with a four seam fastball. Now the set by Lord, here’s the pitch swinging a bouncing ball upside House. Has it to second of Nunez one. He fires a strike to be at first. It’s a double play around the horn. They go 5 to 4 to 3 and that retires the Cubs in the bottom of the first inning. Brady House leads off for the Nationals leading one. Now, the pitch swinging a hard line drive, one hop past the sprawling Swanson, the shortstop to his right and out to left field for a base hit. I’ll tell you what the first two innings the Nationals are absolutely scorching the ball throw to first and they picked up House Busch chasing him to second. Now, Mikos got the ball running him back to first and Boyd will tag him out one away. The Cubs. Even their defense was kind of set up thinking they may have a chance of picking him off once again, an excellent move by Boyd with a pick off the 2 to 1. Young hits a high fly ball right center field, Carl Armstrong and Castro giving chase. It’s Castro who makes the catch right along the edge of the track to the left of the 368 marker two away. Boy deals Abrams swings and it’s a pop fly right behind. Second base that’s caught by Swanson for out number three. Boy to settle down 1 to 0. Washington, middle two on the score. Pete Crow Armstrong leads it off here in the bottom of the second inning. Here’s the two to two PC A rips one deep center racing back. Young. He looks up, he bangs off the wall PC A on his way to second base gets there standing up. Nice start to the inning for Pete Armstrong and the Cubs and he whistles one off the wall as this misses being a home run by a couple feet productive out as PC moves to third. Now the nationals with the infield in and Crow Armstrong at third. Carson Kelly at the plate hitting at 256 on the year with 14 home runs. Now the 2 to 0, Kelly bounces one softly on the left side, barehanded by the third baseman throw goes to first. It’s dugout by Bell RB. I with the ground out for Carson Kelly and the Cubs tie up the ballgame. Mendez charging play by House, couldn’t make any misstep trying to bare hand. That one an excellent scoop on an in between hop for Bell at first base. Here’s Josh Bell on the right side of the infield with Niko up the middle just to the right of the back and Busch holding on the runner Alfaro at first. The 12 a liner that’s put on one hop by Boyd to second for one horner to first in time, double play. And that ends the top half of the third inning Hall of Fame weekend, Sammy Sosa Derrick Lee , 1 to 1 bottom of the third. Welcome back here in the broadcast booth. It’s the birthday boy. 5050. That’s a big number, but a number, a big number I met you when you were 22 years old. It’s pretty wild dance. Swanson at the plate, looks over the glove turns and fires Swanson swings and misses. Slider strikes him out for the first out of the inning pitch to Shaw taken for a called strike three back to back strikeouts for Lord. He got sean looking there on a fastball, it’s on the way swing and a miss he got him and Lord does strike out the side. Lyle is up first in the fourth inning for the nationals. There’s a high fly ball to right. Castro. See you later, not only a six game hitting streak but a two for two day. And for Daylan, number four puts the Nats back on top left on left. Let’s go 16th given up by Boyd who only gives up a homer around every 10 innings or so. Second home run given up to a lefty this year that young man is making a statement for the rest of this season and into 26 hits 23 and four for the Cubs. Now in the bottom of the fourth with Ian leading it off 3 to 2 pitch. Got him swinging a changeup down Lowe four straight strikeout for Lord going back to last inning, the 1 to 2 pitch swing and a miss yet another strikeout fastball fan Suzuki there, the 12 pitch got him swinging. The fastball strikes out Crow Armstrong six consecutive strikeouts for Brad Lord. Here’s Matt Shaw out of the number nine spot pitch to him, swung on line of the gap in right center field, Cruz on the road just in front of the warning track for the out to retire the side as the Nationals lead Byron in the home half of the sixth inning here at Wrigley Bush, not a big base stealing threat leads away in the one is grounded a second double play ball. Nunez flips away from shortstop the first for the double play. The Cubs don’t hit into many of them but they grounded into two twin killings this afternoon. That’s huge. The bases are empty for the man who grounded into the first double play for the Cubs today. Suzuki, here comes the 1 to 1 smacks one to smash into left center field for a base hit two out single for sea brad Lord works five and two thirds innings. He’ll leave with a man at first two outs in the sixth PJ. Fin is coming in to face Pete Pro Armstrong. Next, the pitch pounded on the ground foul off to the right. That one took a bite out of P C’s foot. He’s hopping halfway up the third base line and he appears to be in agony down on all fours. He fouled right off his toes, I believe right off the kneecap and now that’s not good. They’re taking a look at the right knee, Armstrong trying to walk it off alongside trainer Neil Ramp. He’s going to stay in the game. He is a tough kid, you know, by the amount of ball games he plays day after day after day and the fans giving him an ovation for him staying in the ball game trying to help PC A out here comes the payoff pitch outside ball four excellent plate appearance by Crow Armstrong Cubs. Now have the tying run at second base Suzuki. The go ahead run at first in Pete Crow Armstrong Nikko Horner. The 11 change up, roll to shortstop Abrams has it to his left throws to First Horner is out and that ends the inning fouled that ball off his kneecap. He stayed in there on the bases but they did not look comfortable doing so. So they have removed. Pete Altra will take over in center update on Armstrong official news from the team that he has left the game with a right retired two away in the air right field and Castro makes the catch and 123 go. The nationals, the nationals have gotten away so far with more walks than you would like today. See how they pitch to Castro beer kicks and fires and it’s grounded off the mound to Abrams. Has it right with the bag. He touches second one throws to first for two, a 6 to 3 double play. The third twin killing of the game for the nationals. Swanson scores the walk and the inning will continue with a pretty good base runner at first in front of a hot hitter coming up, matt strong. The two swinging a looping line drive sped up by CJ Abrams that was buckling but Abrams stuck with it and made the play and the inning is over two out. Nobody on for Ferrer here in the bottom of the eighth inning. The pitch fastball inside corner strike three called 99 miles an hour at Suzuki backing out of the way, a 123 inning for Ferrer with two strikeouts. Now, Nico Horn of the batter against Henry line drive base hit left field porter is aboard. Now we’ll see if the Cubs. I think it’s stolen base here, stolen base for Niko but Kelly strikes out two away with two outs in the bottom of the ninth down by a run of a man in scoring position. They need a big hit Willie Castro at the plate to center. It’ll play for Jacob Young and the Nats have drawn even in this weekend series. Cole gets his second big league save and now we don’t have to listen to that song in Chicago.
