Patrick Bailey vs Tyler Freeman Collision at the Plate 😳

This is a great matchup so far. And toward the hole on Drew. Base hit. Freeman around third. Ramos’s throw is not going to get him. A collision. Freeman is hurt. He does touch home plate. And going to second is Hunter Goodman. It’s a one-run game. Hopefully Tyler Freeman’s all right. And the same for Patrick Bailey as he’s being attended to. Oh, Bailey was right in the baseline. Meanwhile, how about Hunter, though? What an at bat. What an at bat. And and Bob Melvin was having an animated conversation with the homeplayed umpire Dan Bolino. Naturally, he’s saying, “Hey, he ran. You can’t you can’t run over the catcher.” Well, I mean, he was set up. San Francisco is challenging the safe call at home plate. The previous play is under review. I’m not sure what Tyler’s supposed to do. Here he comes. He moved into him in his last step. He tried to, you know, he tried to avoid him and Bailey moved into him. There’s no way that’s getting overturned. He started to go out and then he said, “No, that’s where Bailey started to go, so I’m going to go inside.” So watch Freeman. So Bailey Bailey went away and then and then veered in to get the throw. Freeman reacted to his first movement. He can’t react again. No. After review, the ruling on the field is confirmed. The runner did not deviate and cause the collision. He is safe. San Francisco will lose the challenge. As it should be and that is as it should be. So the Rockies now within a rod. What an epic matchup won by Hunter Goodman. 81st RPI. And there’s a battle of a slider. Slider, slider, slider, fast ball. And then he beats him again. Yeah, they’re going to This is where outfielders get tough errors.

  1. Weird play. Bad throw. If Bailey didn’t bail out and kept going for the ball the collision wouldn’t have happened. Freeman even started avoiding him early. Don’t think there was any chance of getting him out.

  2. The Catcher should be Tossed Out for blocking the plate without the ball and moving to cause the collision. If he had kept moving to catch the ball, he would have been out of the baseline!

  3. The runner chose the outside path and as the play at the plate happened the catcher did NOT interfere in the base path the runner was taking. The runner changed his path. I honestly would call the runner out for deviating outside his path he was taking.

  4. If anyone is to blame for this play it’s Ramos for the horrendous throw. Right call was made because Freeman didn’t deviate from the base path but Rockies commentators need to relax. Don’t know why they’re trying to make Bailey seem like the bad guy here when he was trying to receive Ramos’ horrible throw. He can’t just let the throw go by either because another run would score. It’s just an unfortunate collision at the plate caused by a poor throw

  5. For plays at home plate, the rule should be the catcher needs to stick to one side of the foul line (if not explicitly fair territory) when he's within the home plate circle without the ball. The rules currently allow him to move into the runner's base path if he's adjusting to a throw or receiving any throw from the infield. It's incredibly dumb that those exceptions are still allowed, and plays like this exemplify it. Catchers should be taught to move parallel with the foul line to adjust to a throw. They can always jump (and ideally have backup) if adjusting to a deep throw.

  6. In this scenario, you run around the catcher, and he gets called for blocking the baseline. You do not collide and put both your bodies in harms way for no reason.

  7. Ngl , this accident should never have happened. The umpire missed a Strike 3 call a couple batters before , that would have ended the inning. I'm ready for the ABS system next year.
