🔴LIVE 🔴Cleveland Guardians VS Tampa Bay Rays/September 07/ / MLB THE SHOW 25
Hey, Gaj League Baseball on tap on this Thursday night. It’s the Cleveland Guardians taking on the Tampa Bay Rays. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. And now, please welcome your [Music] Tampa Bay Rays. [Applause] All right, just about ready for baseball. And starting on the mound for the Rays, Ryan Pepio and Singy. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball. But for some reason, he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Next offering in there for a strike and the count is 0 and2 and downstairs. [Applause] Ah, that hit him and the leadoff man is aboard to start the inning. Now the number two hitter Daniel Schne good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Here we go. Ryan and fires in a fast ball at 95. swings through it and that’s a strike out. I got to think that was the plan all the way. He set him up with a high fast ball and then bury that curveball down low to get him swinging. Now, especially with how effective pitchers work up in the zone these days, that’s a devastating combination. Now it’s Jose Ramirez. so clutch. You could argue that he’s been this team’s MVP this year. Misses inside and that is ball one. Man at first, one away. Chopped to the right side. They put the tag on him and that’s out number two. Here’s the Guardians lineup. Now, this group was shut out their last game, so we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored. And you want to get off to a great start, score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games which no one wants to be a part of. And look out, that one gets him. The second man he’s plunked in this one. Bo Naylor at the plate now. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And that one fouled off. Ball to strike. The pitch just missed. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Quan over at second. Manzardo out of first with two down. Nolan Jones in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And that’ll load the bases. Well, the stage has been set for this offense. Boo. It’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here. Jones. Two outs, bases full. Now, here’s Nolan Jones. And that’s outside. And that’s ball one. All right, let’s go. Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. That one off the mark. Ball three, Boo. In situations like these, the air can get really thin up there at the plate. Got to find a way to breathe and slow everything down. Here comes the pitch. That one finds the zone. Three and one. So, they’re all loaded up with two outs. Ground ball right side. He takes it on his own out to escape a bases loaded jam unscathed. So they strand three and leave him loaded. Bottom half of inning number one coming up. No score. Back here at Chopana Field getting the nod in this one. Logan Allen. And Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. Yeah, and you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a feel difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this, he’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. just missed. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Popped up. Arius makes the grab. One away. Now a look at Kevin Cash’s lineup for the Tampa Bay Rays. a very athletic offensive group with speed spread throughout this offense. Yeah. And it’s so important that they have patient and quality at bats because the key is to get on base. If they do that, then they can create a whole lot of havoc on the base pass, get runners around to score and then that’s going to get you some good pitches to hit as well. So, a very athletic team and we should be in for a treat in this one. It’s not the standard approach that we see in today’s game, but it does work for them offensively. think he wanted that call on the upper part of the zone but just didn’t get it. Now he’s just trying to get a better feel for how much it missed so he can adjust his sights just a little bit. Pop dump Rochio puts it away for the out and there’s two away. Oh, that’s a frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter right there. I mean that pitch was right down the middle. I think he got a little too excited. Came out of his mechanics and instead of driving that ball somewhere, he popped it up. Unfortunate for him. And first off, Ring is fouled off. He’s an intimidating presence in the batters box. I mean, even when he’s swinging and missing, I still don’t know how confident pitchers are that, hey, when he walks to the plate, this guy’s an out. I know there have been some tough times, but I think each pitcher knows that yeah, I could be a swing and a miss. That retires the side and that’ll do it. Rays held in check here. Scoreless after one. Back now in Tampa Bay. Second inning set to go. Now it’s the shortstop Gabrielle Arias. Pepio back to work. That’s in there. Strike one. And that’s outside. Clyde Washington doing the umpiring behind the dish in this one. Sometimes considered a bit of a pitcher umpire thingy. He likes the low ball which traditionally favors pitching, but you know, hitters today are pretty good at dropping their barrel down. So, we’ll see how it goes in this one. And now two balls in a strike. Fouled off. He was late. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Man, it’s so tough to adjust and catch up to a good fast ball inside when all you’re getting throughout an entire at pitches away. You’re telling yourself just let the ball travel so you can protect that outside corner of the plate. Then you get completely tied up. That right there was a great pitch for the punch out. And here is CJ Cayas. That one pushed to the left and fouled. One out. Base is empty. And that’s in the dirt. And that’s off the outside edge. And that’s ball two. swinging a foul straight back. That misses and the count’s full. No score here in the second. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Well, it’s just a great job of playing catch with the catcher. Exactly where the catcher set up is where he threw that pitch and probably fooled the umpire a little bit because there was no budge at all. [Applause] Here’s Brian Rochio. Hard hit right side. Diaz takes it to the bag. Guardians go down in order. So they go quietly there. We go to the bottom of inning number two. We’re tied nothing. nothing. We head to the bottom of the second and now it’s Brandon Laauo Brandon Laauo and that one hit to first. Manardo steps on the bag. Lead off man retired here in the second. Batting fifth leftielder Christopher Morell. Christopher Morurell next to hit for the Rays. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Man, I mean, nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was. Pitch misses and now it’s even one and one. The one-1 is fouled off. [Music] One down. Base is empty. Swing and a miss for the strike out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Good late cut for the strike out there. That thing really got in on him. And you know, the cutter isn’t really a huge swinging miss pitch most of the time because it’s not really meant to move a whole lot. You’re just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact. But that one right there did a whole lot more than that. That was a really good pitch. Boom. That’s staying within his game right there. I mean, this speedster gets the infield single and now he’s on base to possibly do some damage. I love seeing what guys like this can do to disrupt the game once they get in a position to do so. Runner at first with two away. And stepping in for the Rays, Everson Pereira. There’s the strike. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first. Bottom half of inning number two. Come on now. And that one wrapped foul, two outs. and well, with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt, a good secondary lead doesn’t have to get away from the catcher, but if you’re anticipating based off the trajectory, get yourself into scoring position. Swing and a miss. And that is that. So, one hit is all they get. We head on now to the top of the third. No score. And we’re back. Here’s the center fielder, Steven Quan. Steven Quan. Quan goes 5’9 in hitting leadoff in today’s game. And he was a fifth round pick back in 2018. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Pereira sizes this one up and puts the squeeze on that one. One up, one down. Now batting designated. Next for the Guardians is the designated hitter, Daniel Schne. pitch is in there and it’s 0 and one and ball one. One, one strike. Swings through that one for strike two. and a swing and a miss. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Not the best location with the fast ball on strike three, but when you’re pumping high 90s, you’ll get away with some of those. More margin for error. You know, the fast ball has become such a huge strikeout pitch in the sport. And I think a lot of it has to do with all the attention and emphasis on improved spin rates. These fast balls are just exploding out of the pitcher hands and jumping through the zone. Ramirez at the plate with two away. Swings through that one. Next pitch inside and it’s a ball and a strike. Boo. He never moved because he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. That one missed. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. [Applause] Cut on and missed. And it’s a strikeout. And that is the inning. Nothing doing here this half. We head now to the home half of inning number three. We’re tied nothing nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Set for the bottom of the third. Now here is Nick Forz. And a foul ball. [Music] Next pitch is outside. [Applause] There’s the strike. [Applause] Just misses with that one. Great take right there. Showed some really good discipline. Breaking ball coming in. You see it well, but don’t trust that it’s going to hang on for a strike. Nice job. Battling here as he fouls it away. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with the fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Fast ball is outside. [Applause] It’s a leadoff walk and that’s the go-ahead run. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Carson Williams next to hit for the Rays. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. [Applause] Late swing, fouled off. Still tied at zero. Last of the third in the air. center field. Quan heads after it, pulls it down, and he makes the catch. And there’s one away. Now batting right fielder Chandler Simpson. Now it’s the right fielder 0 for one with a fly out. You know, this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher. What you tell yourself is I want to stay square to the plate, try to hit the ball over the shortstop’s head. Yeah, that’s fouled off. This guy absolutely flies. The defense wants to turn two, but they’ve got to get a ball they can do it with. Make sure you get the first out before you try to rush and get two and end up with nothing. Rudder takes off. Tap to first, but that rolls foul. and down on strikes. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Well, he went up there trying to be aggressive, that’s for sure. Hacking at those first two pitches, but clearly that last one fooled him. He could have been sitting on something else entirely. But you want to be able to adjust on 0 and two and at least get a swing off when it’s in the zone. Maybe choke up, maybe spread out your stance a little bit. You got to give the guy credit on the mound though. He went right after him. Yandi Diaz now first time up was a pop out and that one is inside ball one. Keep it up. Let’s go now. Fly ball to right center. He’s got it. And that’s the inning. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and one left on. Three innings complete. No score as we go to the top of the fourth. Digging in, Kyle Manardo. And that is out of play. Just missed. Next offering is fouled back. keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, want to stay up the middle that way. If you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field, not off the mark there. And the count is two and two. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch close but called a ball. Three and two now. Good spot there but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Camero hauls it in and there’s one away. Now batting catcher Ber and next is the Guardians catcher Bone Naylor walked his first time and a breaking ball drops in for a strike. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up until this point. Next one misses. Two and two. Stays alive. One down, base is empty and a swing and a miss. And that’s six Ks for him in this one. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. So in now for Cleveland Nolan Jones foul ball. Two down. Nobody on line drive and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second. And it’s a double. Their first hit in this one. Couldn’t have timed it up. Any better than that. A lot of hitters tell themselves line drive over the infielder’s head. That’s what I’m trying to do. Just keep that approach simple. And right there it was perfectly executed on time with everything and pulled it into the gap nicely. runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Arius digs in now. Ball one there. Well, they’re looking to get on the board first here after that clutch two out double made this inning interesting. Jones at second with two down. That one ripped left field. Morell moving back for it. Makes the catch on the edge of the track. A double in the inning, but they leave him stranded. And midway in the fourth, we’re tied nothing. Nothing. Back here at Tropicana Field. John Shabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Junior Camro. Come on, let’s go. Hey, what do you say now? That’s off the mark. Ball one. One called strike. A sinker at the bottom of the zone. And that one moves his feet. And a pop off right side. Foul territory. And no one can get to it. It’s a foul ball. [Applause] Next pitch is outside. Highf fly ball right field. Kay should have this one. And out number one on the grab. Up next for the Rays. Lao at the plate. 0 for one. He grounded out to first his last time. Come on. And a foul ball. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And it’s one and one. All tied up. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. The 1-1 is fouled off. [Music] fights that one away. Still one and two. And that’s down and away. There’s a swing and a drive way back out of here. That’s worth the price of admission. His 29th of the season. And just like that, they’re out front. It’s one- nothing [Applause] Bu. Clearly some frustration out there on the mound right now. I mean, that ball was so close to going foul. Would have been a long strike, but instead batter gets rewarded. Did a nice job of getting to the pitch and hitting it hard enough to get over the fence. Now a chance for Christopher Morell. And that drops in for a strike. One out. Base is empty and a run in. The Rays leading on the solo homer. Way out front for strike two. That one not close at the count one and two. Chases the change up in the dirt. Naylor down to first and it beats him for out number two. That’s a strike out. Oh, I’m not sure what he was waiting on right there. He got the change up and still laid on it. You rarely see that. It almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up. I mean, if you can’t catch up to the off speed stuff, there’s no way you’re going to touch a fast ball. Jake Mangum next to hit for the Rays. And he bunts, but that’s a foul ball. Two out. Base is empty. and he hits a ground ball right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. The Rays kick off the scoring with a solo bomb. It’s now a one- nothing ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back now in Tampa Bay. New inning getting started and now it’s going to be CJ Cayas. Pepio back to work. There’s a strike. You know, these Guardians doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of him. Starter’s leash has to be getting tighter with his pitch count where it is, but so far he’s been really effective in this one. Next offering is in for a strike. You know, sometimes it just takes getting to the bullpen in order to be able to score runs. And that might be the case today. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. So digging in, Brian Rochio grounded out his first time up and that one is inside. [Music] Fouled off to the right [Music] and strike two. It’s amazing to look up and see 88 miles per hour on that change up. Back in the day, that was a pretty good fast ball, but with high velocities these days, that speed differential is right where it needs to be. Another one, two in the air, left field, down the line. Morell pulls it down and there’s two gone. Up next for Cleveland. And now the center fielder Steven Quan. He’s 0 for one. missed with a change up and the count is one and one. [Music] There’s the swing and a miss. Looking sharp just a strike away from five shut out innings. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. Pretty impressive. We haven’t seen that pitch from him much, but he’s got a really good feel when he throws it. And there’s a ball on the ground and that’s just foul. [Music] Rocketed out towards right center. Pereira pulls it in on the run. He continues to roll on the mound as five shutout innings are in the books. It’s the Rays one and the Guardians nothing. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now up for Tampa Bay. Ever Pereira. And that misses ball one [Music] swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. [Applause] So, next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Nick Forz, he reached out a walk his first time. And Chris, his big strength is defense. But it is interesting in today’s world of baseball compared to when you played. A good defensive catcher is considered differently. Whatever you get offensively is a bonus. But he’s got to put the fingers down. He’s got to present pitches to the umpire. They’re going to help his pitcher get more strikes. And the first pitch misses for ball one. I think the other component is putting down the finger that the pitcher wants to throw and being on the same page. And that’s something. Runner on the go. Swing and a miss. Safe at second and he easily steals the bag. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. Last half of inning number five. Just missed. Boo. His preparation is off the charts. I was down in the clubhouse today trying to find him just to pick his brain a little bit. He’s so buried in that video room. It’s hard to get a chance to talk to him. This one lifted in the air left field. Jones makes the catch and there’s one gone. Good pitch. He just kind of had him out in front on that pitch away and wasn’t able to stay close. Number 77. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Carson Williams 0 for one with a fly out to center. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Pereira leads off second with one gone in the inning. Here we go. Let’s go race. 0 and two now. That’s down and in. One two in the dirt. Man at second. Swing and a miss and he got him. So he picks up his sixth strike out of the ball game. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fasts in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Number 14 up to the plate for the third time as he looks at one down low. right through there for a strike. The 1-1 is fouled off. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Runner at second. Two down. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taken at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You can tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Ground ball right side. It squirts through coming home. Fires it to the plate. Safe. And the runner from second scores on the play. It’s two nothing. Oh, here we are. Third time through the order and this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. Two outs, runner at first and stepping in for the Rays. Yandi Diaz. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. One and0. That one fouled off. Oh, he doesn’t get the call now. Two balls in a strike. Movement in the pen for the Guardians. Slade Sakone, the young right-hander up and throwing. Messik, a left-hander, also throwing. Rip towards third. Ramirez sends it to first and that is the inning. But the RBI single pushes across a run and it’s two zip. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. All set for the top of the sixth. Now it’s the DH Daniel Schneman. This one chopped to first. Diaz and he handles it himself for the out. Now batting third base Jose Ramirez. Here’s Jose Ramirez. Bowl for two in this one. Ramirez, 32 years old, and he was born in the Dominican Republic. Inside, just missed. Base is empty, one away, and we’re the top half of the sixth. Outside two and 0. Two count, great hitter at the dish. If you’re going to miss, you’ve got to miss outside the zone. You miss inside the strike zone, you’ll be asking the umpire for a new baseball. Pitch misses there. Three and O. That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball, but missed the spot. Definitely lost the handle during that sequence. Four pitches for the walk and that last one didn’t even threaten the zone. Catcher might want to go talk to him. Man at first with one gone. Kyle Manzardo will hit next. popped up to the left into foul ground. Hauls it in and there’s two away. Now batting catcher B Naylor. And now the catcher comes up to him. Bone Naylor. A strike out and a walk. That misses and that’s ball one. [Music] Right through there for a strike. Ramirez off of first with two away. The one-1 is fouled off. A sliding stop at short and very nicely done for the out. So another good inning for him on the mound. Six shutout innings. Now it’s the Rays two and the Guardians nothing. Back now for the bottom of the sixth. And there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Slade Sakone on for his 20th appearance of the year. Junior Camro getting ready to hit. First offering misses badly for ball one. Movement in the bullpen. Matt Festa preparing to come on if needed. swings and misses at the pitch off the plate. Man, that was pretty gross right there. Swing and a miss. went back to the slider and it was a good idea. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count and as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide and what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that’s what leads to the strikeout. Yeah, that’s too high. He really committed to that fast ball up at the top of the zone. He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this. Oh, now this one’s high and deep. Way back there on its way gone. Another homer. Home run number 30 on the year. And they boost their lead. It’s 3 nothing. [Applause] Well, he did a really nice job of letting that ball travel. Wasn’t too quick. He kept the shoulder square to home plate, which allows you to drive the ball to the opposite field with power. You see the power and the authority, and fortunately, he was lucky enough to keep it fair. Next to hit, Christopher Morell. First pitch just misses. One out, base is empty and a run in here in the bottom of the six. And it’s fouled away. Ball to strike. Swang and a miss. One ball. And that’s off the inside edge and a full countdown. [Music] gets under and pops it up. Manardo in position and there’s two down. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Two down. Base is empty. Next is the DH. A switch hitter. Jake Mangum. One for two. trying to bunt his way on and he barehands it, but no chance. That’s an infield single. Now batting center. He was racing down the line and probably didn’t assume he was going to be safe until his foot hit the bag and looked up for the umpire. Nice bunt and great hustle to get himself a knock. So two down and now Everson Pereira [Applause] tosses to first. Misplay doesn’t cost him. Inning over. Solo homer extends the lead for Tampa Bay. It’s now 3 nothing. Major League Baseball is on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now the left fielder, Nolan Jones. Notice how they’re swinging too early or too late. That’s a timing problem. They need to guess right on a few of those pitches. And I mean make an educated guess. This pitcher has done a good job of disrupting the hitter’s timing with the mix of pitches and changing speeds. You want to keep that front foot inconsistent for the batter. Their swings are hesitant and that’s exactly what you want on the mound. Nabs it one away. [Applause] Now batting short stop Gabrielle Gabrielle Arius digs in for the Guardians. That’s off the inside corner and it’s one and0. The Guardians trailing by three here in the top half of inning number seven. Highf fly ball shallow right field makes the grab and there’s two gone. Now betting number 63. Stepping up for the Guardians, CJ Cayas, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And a base hit up the middle. And that keeps the inning going. Now batting. Only two hits allowed so far tonight, Boog. So, I don’t think that one will disrupt his momentum all that much. You know, he’s really been on top of his game, commanding his pitches all night long. So, a man aboard, Brian Rochio now at the plate. First pitch and he just misses. That clips the inside corner for a strike. Activity in the bullpen. Pete Fairbanks warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Number 48 also getting ready in the air. Left field down the line. Nobody can get there and it’s a foul ball. Now just about to hit that century mark. 100 pitches for this game. Foul ball still a one and two count. Cus leads off first with two down to the inning. Tampa curve hit right back to him. Fires over to first. Third out and that ends the frame. One left for the Guardians. They trail in this one three nothing. [Music] And we’re back. And here’s the catcher, Nick Forez. Nick Forz. That one missing inside. That misses. Now two and0. Swinging a foul straight back. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Swings and misses. and one out now. Well, that’s the money maker right there. Two strikes, slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter. I mean, that’s just tough. You’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off. Williams stands in now and watches strike one. One ball, one strike. [Applause] Swings and sends a rocket to right. Drops in for a hit. Couldn’t run it down. He’s in at second with a one out double. Everything came together for him. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field. And it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. And now the right fielder. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run in the dirt. One out and a runner at second. You’re the bottom of the seventh. That one’s in there. One ball, one strike. Just missed. That one fouled off. Two and two. This one in the air. Arius. Unbelievable. Two away now. Boy, that was a hanging breaking ball right there. I think he tried to do a little bit too much. Sometimes those eyes can get really big. I think his swing broke down as well and that’s what caused him to pop it up. Now up for Tampa Bay, Yandi Diaz 0 for three in this one. Pitch misses inside and that’s ball one. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. And another ball. [Applause] The 20 is in for a strike. He’s been able to go inside as well as outside, effectively working both sides of the plate in this at bat. Two outs and one in scoring position. fights it off. He’ll see another. And now the count is full. And another power hitter lurking in the on deck circle. Swang at a highf fly ball well struck that one back there and foul as it bangs off the fence. [Applause] Ah ground ball and that’s through the infield. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score easily. It’s an RBI single and they’re up by four. Just a great at bat right there. Saw a lot of pitches. really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. And now Junior Camro 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. That one ripped right center field and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases coming home. He’ll score. Oh, no waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. manager out of the dugout now and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Slade Sakonei gives way and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. So Cleveland brings on a new reliever, Colobby Allard. This guy’s a strikethrower. He’s done an excellent job of avoiding walks so far this season. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Brandon Laauo. And the way he’s going in this one, we’ve been waiting for his spot to come around again. All right, listen everyone. Stop what you’re doing right now. This guy’s got two home runs already. Now he’s going for number three. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Let’s get it going. Swing and a miss. Good eye right there. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. Camo at second with two down. That’s too low. Two and two. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Cut on and lifted in the air. Arius makes the catch and that’ll do it. Two runs, three hits, no errors, and one left. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Rays five and the Guardians nothing. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Garrick Clevenger. He’s got some of the best swing and miss stuff going right now. He’s striking out hitters at a very high rate this year. So, this should be fun to watch. So, back to the top of the order now at the plate. Steven Quan. Tampa Bay and that misses ball one. Tampa Bay’s bullpen with some action. Ryan Baker getting loose out there. Check swing called strike. And that one fouled off. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Almost got him. And it remains two and two. Got him looking. One gone here. Next is the designated hitter, Daniel Schnean. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. And first offering is fouled off. Clevenger, a very difficult guy to get hits off of. It’s really rare for teams to string stuff together against him. He wins every pitch. And for a hitter, sometimes a victory is just fouling off one of his pitches. Unless he beats himself somehow can’t find it, doesn’t have the control command that day, he could pretty much forget about it. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Got him swinging. Well, they’ve had a great plan of attack for him tonight. I mean, finding all the holes in his swing and his approach just frustrating for him up there. You strike out a guy three times in a game. I think that guy’s got to go back and really study some video with his hitting coach. Figure out how they’re beating him. Make this adjustment really quick because Word will get around the league in a hurry. Ramirez in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. fought off foul. As a hitter, there’s even more pressure to take advantage of any mistake, right? Yeah. And you’re hoping that, you know, somehow someway, whether it’s a hit by pitch, a walk, something bad happens because outside of that, stuff is just too good to fail. That gets down for a hit. So, a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Most hitters dream of being able to hit breaking pitches as well as this guy. It takes great bat-to ball skills to be able to be as good as he is against the junk pitches he faces. Kyle Manzardo digs in for the Guardians. And the slider just misses. And he’s got deception in his delivery. And it’s not that he’s trying to deceive the hitters. He just has this natural flow that makes it hard for hitters to pick the ball up. It gets on them a little bit quicker than they anticipate, even though they know what the velocity numbers are. Next offering is fouled back. The Rays leading by five and we’re in the top of the eighth. Rays and that’s a little bit high and it’s two and one. Fast ball for a strike. [Applause] swing and a popup. Camero settles underneath it and he makes the catch and that is that. Guardians leave one. It’s 5 nothing back here at Tropicana Field. Here’s the left fielder, Christopher Morell. Bottom of the zone and a called strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Matt Festa appears to be getting loose. And that’s off the inside edge. And the count even one and one. They say it went One ball, two straight. One, two now. And a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. Third time he struck out in this one. And definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days. But when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. High-fly ball out to center field. Quan heads after it. Makes the grab for the second out. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. Got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. And first offering is fouled off. Two down, nobody on here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Swing and a miss. dropped him out and good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Nothing doing for Tampa as they are unable to add to their five nothing lead. Ryan Baker gets the call from the pen. Well, he’s a big time strikeout guy out there this season, averaging more than one per inning. Leading off, Baylor, take it high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Missing inside. Ball one. Baker measures 6 feet 6 in 235 lbs and they traded for him earlier this year. Check swing and he went and the count one and one on the ground right side steps on first for the out. Now batting leftielder Nolan Jones. So up next, Nolan Jones one for three. And that’s in for a strike. Going one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Number 67 up and loosening in the pen. Kelly also throwing. smoked on the ground to second. Slings to first and a couple of quick outs. Now batting shortstop, Gabrielle Arias. Last out for the Guardians in this one. Gabrielle Arias digs in for the Guardians. 0 for three with two flyyous and a strikeout. In for a strike 0 and one. They’re down to their final strike. Two really good backto-back sliders now in an 02 count. He’s feeling real confident about finishing this hitter off. He can go anywhere he wants. Baker is just one strike away and a swing and a miss and that is the ball game. The number seven is such a cool and sort of lucky number. Well, this team has been playing really well, but to win seven games in a row. Uh there’s been some luck and there’s been some really good play. I think you get to this point, you start to look at, can we double that? Make it double digits. Make it two touchdowns. Make it 14. 5 nothing the final in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB. the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
