KENT HUGHES’ NEXT MOVE AFTER TRADING CAREY PRICE: MONTREAL CANADIENS TRADE TARGETS REVEALED?

You may be wondering now that Carrie Price is officially out of the Montreal Canadians organization, now that his $10.5 million AAV deal has been freed from the shackles of Kent Hughes and the Triricolair. Now, where do the Montreal Canadians go from here? With Price off the payroll, where do the Canadians start spending their money? And if you were interested in seeing what options there were for Kent Hughes and his squad, look no further because an article on TVA Sports published earlier in the weekend dives into just that. Big shout out over to Mark Antoine Malo who went out there and posted this piece 2 days ago. Second line center, five options for the Montreal Canadians to consider after the carry price trade. So 10.5 million bucks off the books. Montreal is now well underneath the salary cap ceiling. Now they’ve got some options here. And if they wanted to go out there and make an immediate move, if they wanted to make a trade, they wanted to make an acquisition, they wanted to add that second line C behind Nick Suzuki, here are some of the guys that Malo thinks are worth taking a look at. This article will be linked in the description. It’s in French, so I translated it to English via the Google machine. But Malo writes here about how trading carry prices contract on Friday frees up a significant amount of money. So why not take advantage of the opportunity to acquire that coveted second line center? The timing of this transaction suggests that CEO Kent Hughes and his partners have an agenda. They have 4.58 million bucks in wiggle room. According to Puckedia, improving the team remains a priority even this close to training camp and the needs at center are wellnown. Here are five possible options that Canadians could consider. Number one, it is Jack Rosavik. And I saw this and I was like, come on, man. We’ve made a bunch of videos talking about Rosik, his profile, what he has, what he doesn’t have, what he’s capable of doing, and why this guy doesn’t have a contract just yet. The Vancouver Conucks are probably one of the staple teams that is being looked at as a squad that needs a second line center. And even they turned away from Jack Rosik. just didn’t see too much value in what he is capable of bringing as a full-time second seed. Here’s the simplest solution for Montreal. Rosik doesn’t yet have a contract for next season, but that doesn’t mean he’s a bad player, Malo writes here. The 28-year-old American is reportedly asking for more than some teams would be willing to give him. He commanded a salary of 2.8 million last year with Carolina amassing 39 points and 22 goals. His best offensive results were in Columbus with 146 points in 246 games. Okay, that is not how people talk about best offensive results. They don’t do the totality of their point production, but still. Does that make him a second line center on a playoffbound team? Not quite. But he has plenty of experience and is producing at roughly the same rates as Kirby Dock. It’s an option that wouldn’t cause management headaches, but it’s obviously less exciting than others. That is true. Jack Rosik this most previous campaign 39 points in 81 games played. He’s a fine player, inconsistent, but still he provides an offensive flare. If you go out there and you get Jack Rosik, can you guarantee that he gets more points than a new hook or a dock in a second line role? I honestly don’t think it’s a big guarantee. So maybe Jack Rosic is too vanilla for my liking. Let’s go over onto the other names talked about here on the article. Name at number two is Ryan O’Reilly. 4.5 million bucks a year to 2027. Hughes is capable of much more than adding the missing piece of the Canadians offense and he has proven it. Finding a true second center is possible and without trading any more contracts. The Nashville Predators appear to be in need of a rebuild and 34year-old vet Ryan O’Reilly is a perfect candidate to come to Montreal. He has long been known for his effectiveness on both sides of the ice and in the faceoff circle. This is exactly the kind of player the Canadians need to provide a platform for youngsters Ivan Demidovs, Slowski, and Buluk. Plus, O’Reilly’s $4.5 million salary for the next 2 years is within the price range. What more could you ask for? And this, my friends, is probably the name that I think is the best to dive into here. O’Reilly is old. Yeah, 34. Definitely isn’t on the opening half of his career, but he’s making a decent amount of money. It’s not a lot. And last year, he had 53 points in 79 games played. The year before that, 69 points. So, a very nice amount of points. Ryan O’Reilly when he’s actually able to play. And when he’s actually being utilized like he wasn’t in St. Louis to end off his 223 campaign there, he’s a very good player. A Cons winner of years past, a former 70point guy, and a very strong two-way center. A guy who can pretty much instill those good habits into the second line. You talk about the defensive irresponsibilities of guys like Patrick Lion and to an extent Ivan Demidov. We all remember the back check on Demidov’s goal against in his first game here. It wasn’t a good one. Ryan O’Reilly may more than make up for what those other two guys lack on the back end and he would probably instill some of those positive defensive habits. I like the idea of O’Reilly to Montreal a lot. But there also is another name that I think we could dive into here. It’s Jared McCann, making 5 million bucks through 2027. The Seattle Kraken acquired several new offensive assets this summer. And some are suggesting that Jared McCann could eventually be traded. The player who can also play left wing is a very good value player after three seasons of 60 plus points each. The Ontarian even scored 40 goals in 2223. He’s by far the leading scoreer in the Kraken short history and a fan favorite. MacaN currently commands a salary that’s barely above what the Canadians can afford. They have no choice but to trade a player in return to acquire him. Jared Macan is also very good. This guy total rock star prime ripe age of 29 2014 drafty. So just a little bit older than some of the other core guys that Canadians have. Suzuki was 2017 drafted. Cfield 2019, Lina was 2016. So McCann is right there in the older side of it, but he’s still decently young holistically speaking. And this most previous season, he had 61 points and 22 goals. The Kraken weren’t great, but Jared McCann has been there, and he has been a former 70point guy as far back as just 2 years ago. Ever since he found himself a home in Seattle, he has been lights out. And Jared McCann now is in a spot where if he were to get traded to Montreal, this guy playing with Ivan Demidov could probably provide some fantastic value. I think he’s the best offensive name on this list. And it’s not even really close. Ryan O’Reilly is better holistically. He’s better everywhere else. Jared McCann though has a really good shot and he’s got some very good offensive tools. Scrolling down here, here’s another guy that’s also got some pretty good overall tools, but he’s a little bit more expensive. It’s Nick Schmaltz of the Utah Mammoth. The Mammoth are starting to get crowded at center. So much so that Schmaltz could play wing in 2526. Besides him, Logan Coulie, Barrett Hayden, and Jack McBain are all reliable centers who will continue to prove their worth. Schmaltz has just one year left in his contract, and he’ll be paid 5.85 mil. That’s a pretty fair price for one of the league’s best passers, who’s been feeding Clayton Killer beautifully for the past seven years. The American who’s only 29 years old has just set a personal best of 63 points. Heavy.com reporter Cole Shelton even suggested a schmaltz for dock trade. That sounds tempting. Now, that’s a video topic in and of itself, but Nick Schmaltz is a guy that I’m pretty familiar with as well because this guy formerly was the top passer on the North Dakota Fighting Sue CBS line alongside of Brock Besser and Drake Kajula. That was a very good line back in the day. Schmaltz is a little bit expensive for my liking here, but he certainly is a decent hockey player. Enough so that he could be seen as valuable. And then you’ve got this fifth name over here. It’s Dawson Mercer of the New Jersey Devils. A project for the sake of a project. If Doc isn’t the long-term solution at second center, should Kent Hughes take another role at the dice? After four full seasons during which he hasn’t missed a single game, Dawson Mercer has left many wanting more. With the Devils, he’s been pegged as a third string center due to the presence of Jack Hughes in his year. His 24-25 numbers of 19 goals and 36 points don’t quite warrant a promotion, but he’s shown better in the past. The Newfoundland and Labrador native has amassed 56 points while maintaining a plus minus rating of plus 22 as recently as 2223. At 23 years old, he still has plenty of time ahead of him. Now, Dawson Mercer, I don’t really think he’s a guy that moves the needle enough to make a trade work. Yes, he had 56 points a few years ago, but he has declined steadily since then. Slight increase the most recent campaign, but nothing to write home about. He’s young, so there’s a lot of value there, but I’d rather go for a Macan or an O’Reilly. Honestly, if you’re trying to project the Canadians as a playoff team this year, what about you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below. out of these five names, Jack Rosik, Ryan O’Reilly, Jared McCann, Nick Schmaltz, and Dawson Mercer. Where do you think the Canadian should go in regards to their second line center search? I hope you enjoyed this video 999 and bye.

  1. Roslovic: Too old, doesn't produce enough. Montreal doesn't seem to be going for players over 26 years old.

O'Reilly: Far too old. Never gonna happen.See Roslovic. MTL is building around their young core and trying to get rid of their oldies.

McCann: See Roslovic. MTL is not building around old farts.

Nah. Montreal will likely old to the cap space, since they have to pay Hutson next season, also Matheson, Xhekaj, Dach, and Laine. 2 years left of the expensive contracts of Gallagher and Anderson.

If I were MTL, I'll wait until those 2 useless contracts are done and then make a big move. Until then, stay the course and try to improve the team trade by trade like Hughes has done for years.

  2. im a nashville area resident and fan, the people hating on orielly havent been watching him at all, he is a legit beast, his numbers dont tell the story at all and the numbers arent even that bad…..i dont see yall giving us something good enough for us to let him go unless they start a full teardown

  3. The longer MTL waits, the higher the salary(s) they will be able to accept

On March 6, MTL will be able to accept contracts worth up to $20 million/year
The cap will be calculated based on the remaining time of the season
