game. Jaguars postgame is brought to you by Farah and Farah, the University of Florida. What a Burger and by Everbank. Jaguars postgame presented by GEA starts right now. And Jaguars postgame is brought to you by GEA government employees health association. Benefits for federal employees and retirees. JP Shadrick, Mike Dempsey, Fred Taylor from the Hyundai studios after a Jaguars victory in week one. Final score 26-10. What a day. A lengthy day with that hour and 16 minute delay, but the Jaguars with the momentum going into that delay. Still had the momentum coming out and this one was never really close. Fred, welcome in. Good to see you, man. What’s up? Good to see you guys, man. It’s always good to see y’all when we win. Victory, baby. Victory, man. Hey, Travis ETN say, “Put a stamp on it. Keep my name out of your mouth. Put some respect on it.” That boy came to play today. I love it. Yeah. Quite a quite a day for him. Oh man. Big day. Big day. Need a lot of them. Yeah. Uh 200 yards rushing for this Jags team today, Fred. Yeah. A lot more of that, too. You know, the guys up front, I thought they did a great job once they stopped, you know, deciding to to hold uh on first down. But uh you know, just as a unit, I thought they did well uh on the other side of the ball. uh from a defensive standpoint. Got to give those guys a shout out. You take away the quarterback’s runs and they, you know, hold the Panthers under 100 right there as well. So, uh big shout out to both sides of the ball as a unit. I thought they played great. Saw a lot of good signs, a lot of big plays. The turnovers were amazing. The fourth down stops were amazing. Type of football we want to see around here. Yeah, you always look for improvement, right? I mean, look, 11 penalties for 93 yards. So, there’s a lot to clean up there, Fred. No doubt. Like you said, a couple of uh lost containments on Bryce Young, but overall this team came out to play. All right, let’s go back to Everbank Stadium inside the Everbang vault. Kanani Stevens is with Dewan Smoot. Two tackles and a sack and a TFL. Kai, sure am. Just welcomed him back because gosh, what a way to start a defensive day by far. Yes. You talked a ton about, you know, coach camp just wanted you guys to be active, make plays, and you were able to do that. Is it the system? Is it the energy? Is it all of it together? It’s all of it encompassed together. I mean, camp, he already brings the energy, but like he’s a defensive mind. He knows what they’re going to do. He gets us ready, you know, we prepared today and we were prepared today and we played together with a lot of energy. So, just happy to come out with that dub. We want to know, baby. Feeling the energy and just I know you weren’t here last season, but just the resilience. I mean, you know, if there’s a penalty, something goes wrong. Felt like you guys were kind of like on to the next thing immediately. Is that something you felt has been emphasized so far? Oh, yeah, for sure. Especially after the first game where like we had some like lineup issues and stuff like that. We’ve we have been pounding it during practice just making sure we’re getting lined up, making sure we’re just moving on to the next play because you don’t have time to think about that last play. You just got to move on and you know, just play great. What’ you do in the break for an hour plus when you guys were hanging out down there? I was actually sitting in the sauna. Okay. I had to stay warm. It’s hard for me to get cold and then warm again. So, I just stay warm. I was going to say it has to be a little complicated when you have that and then another halftime after that. Yes. Yes. Very difficult. Um, first we’ve seen Travis Hunter on both sides of the football. From your perspective, what was that kind of like seeing him go back and forth? I mean, it’s it’s something that’s never been done, you know, and I feel like he handled it well. He was going back and forth, back and forth, and it looked like he just didn’t get tired, you know what I’m saying? So, I mean, I’m I’m definitely curious to see what he does as the season goes goes on. Um, we saw some plays from I know you’re a free agent coming back, but Jordan Lewis playm playmaker out there, Guardic making plays, Agba, to see some of the free agents come in and really make moves, it’s impressive. Oh, it’s very impressive. And Jayloo, he’s been balling out all camp. It’s crazy cuz like before he got that pick, I was like, “Let’s take, hey, take us home. Get a pick. Take us home. Let’s go.” and he end up getting the pick, you know, speaking into existence. You know, God does his work. Absolutely. All right. And and Cohen’s first game as a head coach. What was kind of the messaging? And I’m sure he was hype after that for the win. He said just play loose, you know, at the end of the day. I know it’s a lot of um tightness, you know, with the first first game coming, his debut. Everything was everything was a debut. So, he just said just go out there and just lean lean on your training and just play loose. And that’s what we did. Dwan, welcome home. Congrats on the win. Thank you. That’s Dwan Smoot in the Everbank vault with Kai Stevens. Yeah, part of a defense today that really played well. Uh led by Foyer Alukin really Fred quickly here. 10 tackles, interception, forced fumble. First time in his career he’s had an interception and a forced fumble in the same game. And uh boy, this is the really start of something special maybe for him. Yeah, I mean he’s obviously over you look at over the years since he came over from Atlanta, you know, he u I think he’s been the most consistent player. He’s a tackling machine. We know him for that. But to be able to maintain and and and come away with that uh PBU interception to flip things and then we go down and score a few plays later. I think that’s sort of what created the rally. And just to kind of echo what Smoot said a bit, yeah, they got some penalties. It’s one thing. You look at the first preseason game, the first play of the game was a false start. We had the uh too many men in the huddle on the field goal. That was preseason. They cleaned those things up. Different types of penalties, JP, Mike. You have the hustle penalties. You’re playing hard and aggressive and physical penalties and then you have the bonehead penalties. I can take the the effort penalties if you don’t kind of like just bury us. It shows me that you’re playing hard and playing through it, but the careless penalties that all always kill you. I won’t take those. So, still like you said, Mike, they got a lot of stuff that they got to go and clean up, but it’s a really good start today. Let’s come back in a moment. Plenty ahead. We’ll hear from head coach Liam Cohen as well after a Jaguars victory. Final score 26-10. Jags over the Panthers in week one. It’s Jaguars postgame on Jaguars Radio. What were some of the keys and what’ you guys kind of talk about when you had that hour? Yeah, I think that the guys just did a nice job of understanding kind of where we live, right? That we talked about this going into the game that this was a possibility. We talked about it this morning as a staff. Um, and I thought they just did a nice job of we were doing some uh kind of not after action report stuff at the half, but a little bit of okay, what’ they do? We kept them engaged. also gave them a little bit of space to go and kind of stay loose and stretch out in here. They they kept their focus. Came out got them loose and and I thought they came out with the right mindset and mentality for sure. It’s a weird deal. Uh first one in my career, but um really proud of the way that they competed and closed the thing out. Hey Liam, first game as Jaguars head coach. Um just in terms of your emotions, in terms of the team’s emotions, where are they right now after the win? Yeah, I mean really cool to to be sitting, you know, to be standing up here, obviously after a win. Um, but I was just really proud to be their coach today with the way that they competed, the way we hit, the way we were more physical, all the things that we kind of wanted to preach about. Now, is it perfect? Absolutely not. You know, you’re frustrated with some of the penalties that have continued to bite us in the butt that we’ve we did overcome at times, but it’s uh that’s not something we want to get used to doing by any means. And so when you play teams as we go throughout this thing, uh we cannot do those things and expect to win. And then you you talked about all training camp and the offseason about how you’re going to need to see the team in actual games to assess the run game. Just seeing the performance today, particularly Travis ETN. What did you think? No man, I mean those guys up front I thought pro probably played really well at times but you know the backed up run that he makes um Strange comes across gets a kick out block but there’s a safety sitting in the hole that Travis just you know made a great move and broke loose. I mean I thought he you could feel him all day. You definitely felt him being a little bit having a little bit more burst maybe than other guys on the grass. He looked fresh. He looked fast. He took care of the football. So uh proud of him. you know, he did a great job, but the whole unit really, you know, all the way through the end of the game, uh, ran the ball effectively. Liam, uh, first full game with Trevor. What did you make of the communication between the two of you and also how’d he play? Yeah, I thought that especially early on throughout. I thought he had great communication. We were in and out of the huddle, had the one delay, but that was really communication fault of us as coaches. Um, I thought he handled things well. I thought he had a not a great third quarter, be honest. you know, we need to be more accurate um and complete some of those balls when we have people open. But I thought for overall for his first start in a new system, he handled it really well. He got us in and out of a lot of plays. He had to can a lot of plays and and he did it effectively and efficiently and I was proud of his leadership. How encouraging were those two scrambles? Oh, huge. Huge. I mean, we talked about that on Friday was you don’t get to see that in practice, right? I mean, I didn’t get to see it last year with Baker either, right? Because you’re trying to be be a quarterback and go through your progressions, go through your reads, play the position, and man, he saw he knew it right away. He came off to the sideline, it was man coverage, the linebacker, who was the whole player, took BT, and he saw a huge lane. So, for him to be able to do that, uh, is huge. Those were two huge pickups for us. And, uh, I’m glad that he was able to get out there and play it that way. Liam, um, did you get the game ball? Ah, I I got one of them. We’ll give out more on Monday though. Yeah. Was it a reluctant uh acceptance? Yeah, a little bit. But my my boss gave it to me so I had to accept. But the guys, you know, it it’s a cool moment, you know, for me personally and all that, but really it’s about those guys. I mean, these guys played their tails off. I thought the defensive staff specifically did a great job. Not to single them out better than the offensive staff. They all did a great job. But I thought Campy had some very timely, you know, pressure calls in both the run and the pass, you know, to really get three turnovers. Should have been a fourth and two turnovers on downs. I mean, that’s damn good defense. Yeah, I was going to follow up with that on the defense. Murray, Lewis, and Foyer kind of like the middle, the heart of the defense, right up the middle. Those guys had huge plays after huge plays. How encouraging was that to see for a defense that did not turn the ball over very much last year? They’re huge to I mean what they have eight last year. So to get three in one game, nine nine eight on defense, nine total. So to get three in one game is probably a good start. Liam, uh defense and some of those fourth down high leverage situations. Just what what does that say to you to just see them come out on top the way they did? just that the competition, the mamba periods that we’ve been able to kind of replicate in practice, the high level situational football was able to show up. Uh, you know, those fourth down got to have its and then really the the end of half execution by the offense on the flip side where Trevor we we pick up and overload pressure. Laquent Allen has a great pickup. Trevor stands firm, throws the dagger to Demi, we get the timeout, kick the field goal. I mean, that’s that’s well executed, you know, situational football, but the defense stepping up the way they did. I mean, the rush was getting home. We let them out a couple times too much for my liking, but we were affecting the quarterback. And then I think from the back end, those guys did a great job as well. And what what kind of impression did you get from the offensive line pass? It seemed like Trevor really wasn’t affected much. Yeah, I I I really did feel like they were protecting their tails off. I mean, I didn’t feel like he was under a ton of duress. It’s not really Carolina’s nature in terms of bringing much pressure, but I thought those guys did a nice job in protection. I didn’t really chip much at all on either of those two tackles. So, that was encouraging for sure. Coach, as you’ve been adjusting to the role of head coach and now that you’ve completed your first game, what have you what aspects of the job have you found to be most surprising or most unexpected? Good one. Um, probably just the amount of scheduling that goes into it, right? I mean, that’s why I have, you know, Jay Kaiser is a great help in mine and the uh Shane Waldron, Elizabeth Harrison, like just giving help with the scheduling and trying to take some of that stuff off my plate. Um because ultimately why Shod went this route was to try to keep the main thing the main thing and I am a football coach. Um but that’s part of the job. So, a lot of the organization of it, I’ve got a great support staff helping me out and that’s been probably the the biggest challenge. Fourth and one, you bring in Edoga and how rewarding was that for you and the staff when you look back to last year in the last several years around here. Third and one, third and two, fourth and one. This team couldn’t pick it up and you played man football and got a first down. What What was that like? That was huge. I mean, we definitely had a little bit of a conversation about that one kind of leading into the play, like just a few plays prior, just what our thought process was. And we did want to be aggressive in that moment and and keep the offense out the on the field and and kind of challenge our team, challenge these guys. And um they rose, you know, they rose up to the challenge. We got the first. Keeps the offense on the grass, keeps the ball moving, keeps the clock moving. And uh that’s momentum. And we know in this game so much momentum, man, the swings and how do you handle them and manage them? And I thought those guys kept their cool and and really handled those situational football really well in terms of getting those fourth downs. I What do we have? Two fourth downs that we went for and got. So, you know, we’d like to be aggressive. That’s kind of a mentality we’d like to have, but without being reckless. And I thought those guys handled it well. And your confidence putting a seventhrounder in, you know, Allen Jr. immediately on third down and what he was able to do. Oh man, he had a great, like I just said, the pickup in the two-minute drill was huge. He had JC Horn blitzing on a corner blitz and that’s a big dude coming and a good player. He stoned it and he stoned it. Allowed Trevor to pick up step up in the pocket, make a great throw. He had a good third down run as well on I think it was like third and four, third and three where he had a nice run which squirted in there for a first down. So to have all four of those backs contribute today, right? I mean whether it shows up in the stat sheet as having all these yards and obviously ETN will get a lot of that praise deservingly so. But I think that room in general with Chad Morton as their coach have done a phenomenal job getting better and improving all throughout this, you know, entire time since we’ve been here really. And what did you think of Travis Hunter’s performance today? And is that kind of the way you guys want to use him going forward? Mostly offense? No, I think that was game one. You know, I think that was week one where you missed 10 days or so and there was some, you know, a lot of different kind of coverage changes in in the back end for us with some of their formations adjustments. There it was a lot that those guys had to handle defensively. And so it was maybe, excuse me, a little bit less for him this game. I think it’ll only continue to evolve and go more. I thought he played hard on offense. I thought he played fast. He had some good catches, ran the right route. So, um, I can only see it going and expanding from here, coach. Thank you. Thank you, guys. Appreciate it, guys. After only nine all of last season and certainly have made that a priority, uh, Jaguars offensive line did not allow a sack in the game today. Uh, even when Carolina was bringing extra pressure, it felt like the the pocket held up all day really for Trevor. and when it didn’t, he would scramble and and get as much as he could. So, all around pretty good day for the Jags. Some penalty issues, but easier to fix those after a win. 11 penalties, 93 yards in the game for the Jags, but ETN, as we mentioned, 143 yards on the ground on 16 carries. Trevor Lawrence 19 of 31 through the year, 178 a touchdown and interception as well. Uh Jags kind of mixed it up offensively through the air. Brenton Strange had the most yardage, 59 yards on four catches. Travis Hunter in his debut in the NFL, six catches for 33 yards on eight targets today. And an all-around team victory today for the Jacksonville Jaguars. And for head coach Liam Cohen in his debut, the head coach interview presented by GA. Let’s head to the locker room. Kanani Stevens with the head coach. Kai. Liam Cohen. First game as a head coach, first win as a head coach. It was going to be memorable no matter what, but had a lot to deal with. We had a long rain delay, some penalties early, a lot of stuff, and as you discussed, things don’t go perfect. What do you think of your first game? I’m just proud of the guys, you know, proud of the way the coaches prepared them to play, and then proud of the way that the guys competed today. I mean, handling coming out multiple penalties on the first drive, overcoming a few of them, getting points, and um, you know, obviously having to deal with the lightning delay and coming out handling that the right way, dealing with some adversity, coming together as a team, getting 20 points before the half, I think it was, right? Was it 20 points at the half, getting the field goal before the half was huge, the situational football execution. So really proud of the guys, the coaching staff, everybody involved looking at what the defensive side of the ball was able to do. I know you’re um fully entrusted of coach Campanelli, but just to see kind of the forced turnovers, they’re flying around. They’re fast. Did you watch that in awe a little bit just like this is great. This is what I need. Yeah. To get three turnovers, what could have been four, and then also to have two turnovers on down. So that’s getting the ball back five times to the offense. And so that is huge. That is huge. To go from only having eight turnovers on defense last year to having three in the first game is a huge step in the right direction. So pleased with that. I those guys played their tails off. They were running around. We were affecting the quarterback. But I just thought that our open field tackling was good. I thought tackling in general was good. Um really proud of that staff, the defense campy, you know, that whole that whole staff did a great job preparing these guys and then, you know, making some in-game adjustments as well. So players handled it. they play their asses off. We talk about some of those playmakers, some of those free agents we’ve added, Jayloo out there, Agba, you know, different names. To know that the people that you’re bringing in are immediately having an impact, that has to feel good. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, you look at Jayloo closing out the game the right way. Agba had some tips. Eric Murray played a good sound solid game as well for us. And then on the offensive side of the ball and you look at bringing in uh Hany and Mccuri up front, I mean those guys play their tails off, you know, and so the tight you get Hunter Long first touchdown of the game, another one. So to add to the already talented roster that, you know, that was here in a lot of ways, but to bring in the kind of guys that we did to impact us in week one, I think was pretty cool to see. You’ve emphasized the run game throughout. Um weren’t sure if you were going to be able to get four guys a jersey. contributions in different ways and you have to be happy with that what you just hands down. I mean those guys that room I think Chad Morton has done a phenomenal job coaching those guys and preparing him to take the next step. Obviously ETN’s going to get a ton of the glory which he should. He played his tail off. Very proud of him. But Tank Toutin and Allen all did a good job. They all impacted the game in a positive way. Laquent had some great pickups on third down, especially the one right before the half to allow Trevor to step up and throw the dagger to Deami. You know, Toutin had some good hard runs. Tank had some good hard runs. So, you know, is it every week going to be exactly like that with the the numbers, you know, primarily going to ETN, you know, who knows? You know, you you want to let those guys go out and play, but they all impacted the game. Um, I know you haven’t looked at film yet, but your thoughts on Trevor’s performance, just the kind of the command of the offense overall? I thought overall I thought he was solid, you know. I thought he was solid. Um, you know, for really for the first two quarters I thought he was really playing well. Had a little bit of a tough third quarter. Just some some balls spraying a little bit getting away from him. So, we’ve got to look at those, see if it was footwork related. Was what was it um to get him back on track? But then I thought he did have a couple clutch scrambles especially. And then also, you know, the the over the middle ball, the strange on the critical third down to keep the clock moving, keep the ball moving. But I was proud of the way that he kind of just operated. You know, he operated the offense at a high level. He had to do a lot of canning plays and getting us in and out of the right plays. So, uh, I was proud of him as a leader. Proud of him to get the win and, um, you know, look forward to correcting some of the mistakes here. You’re playing both sides of the ball after the game. you’re, you know, going doing a little lap around the stadium. Was it everything you hoped, thought it would be? Uh, yeah. I was just excited, ready to go out there and win with my team and just be and bring that energy like, like I say, every day, every time y’all interview me. I’m trying to bring the energy, bring the guys up and make sure we stay true to oursel and just be the team we know we can be. How do you think you did offensively today? Coach Cohen just was in, said you didn’t, you ran all the right routes and all that other stuff. Couple of catches. How do you feel like you played today? Uh, I did my job. That was the main focus of me doing my job. I did what they asked me to do and I know I can do more and I know I can do better. Travis, you guys ran for over 200 yards. How pleasing was that for the offensive performance on the ground? Oh, that’s great. You can run the ball. Then they had to come up and play man and press us. So then we get to throw the ball. So it was great that we was able to run the ball right through him. And how cool was it seeing BTJ get the reverse touchdown run? Oh yeah. I was on the sideline happy cuz I knew it was his play and I knew he was going to get the ball and score. So I was definitely excited for him. but he forgot to do the dance. But it’s all good. How hard is it to to or is it easy for you to be so involved on every play and so bring so much energy even when you’re not on the field because you’re like the first one out there to celebrate with everybody. It’s not hard. You just got to go out there and just be myself. I’ve been doing this for a long time and my job is to go out there and bring the energy and do my job. And and JC Horn made a great one-handed catch on that ball. That was the deep ball. But was that a touchdown? if he doesn’t. Yeah. If he don’t get up and make a great play like he did. Yeah. I think that was a touchdown. Travis, as you reflect back on on your first game in the NFL, are there any particular uh memories or highlights that really stand out in your mind from today? We went out there and won. We we won the game. We was able to take the you know, my first game was a dub. So, that’s exciting for me. The haircut wasn’t like a rookie hazing thing, was it? No, no, no. I chose to do this myself. Why? It was just time time to let it go. You know, a new me, new person, walk into a new chapter in my life. So, I was able to just chop it off. Sometimes you let it go and come back. Travis, before the game, you came over and you had a little moment with your with your grandmother, and I know there are other members of your family uh in the stadium. Just what did that mean seeing them here and being able to play your first professional game in front of in front of her, in front of family members? Uh, it just I grew up here in South Florida, so it was it was great for me to be able to show my grandma, you know, she was the first person to sign me up for football, so her seeing me on the big stage was an exciting moment for me. Travis, three turnovers by defense. Seemed like guys were flying around. Just what are your thoughts on what defense showed today? Uh, that’s what we doing in practice. We do it every day in practice. Just fly around. You know, our big emphasis everybody get to the ball. 11 guys to the ball. So tips and overthrows, we got to get those and that’s what we’ve been doing. Travis, how abnormal was this with just a few defensive snaps? I think you may have had six. I mean, usually you’re playing almost every play. So, we understand what your new role is going to be like, but what was it like, you know, over the last four hours? Uh, I just leave that up to the coaches. I just go out there when they call my number and call my name. I just go out there and do my job. So, dessert and tasty with Al’s Pizza in the stadium. And you can enjoy even more with the pizza kickoff promo after the game. When the Jaguars get two interceptions in one game, you’ll score 50% off one pizza any size you want for 48 hours after the game. Just tell them you want the Jags pick promo when you order. Up your game and your pizza with ours at the stadium or any of their locations. Everyone circle up. I know it looks rough out there. Sure, we’re down 24-6, but we came here to play differently. We need a game changer. Something like Ring Central, the business phone system that’s more than a phone. I want you to communicate like you can talk to anyone, anywhere, all from the same app. Now, get out there and play like you’re using Ring Central. Ring Central, simpler communications. Jaguars postgame presented by GEA continues. JP Shadrick, Mike Dempsey, and Fred Taylor from the Hyundai Studios after a 26 to win a 26-10 Jaguars win in week one. And time now for the Jaguars Radio Network player of the game voting. Fred, uh, the the weather delay messed up some travel plans for a number of people today. So, we’re gonna get you out here a little bit early, but uh, let’s get your vote. Player of the game. What do you got? This one’s going to come out of left field, maybe. Um, I know everybody think I’m thinking Travis ETN, but I’m going to go with Foyer Luickin. I think he got the rally going. He had the 10 tackles there. Started the game off with an interception that led to touchdown led to seven. He had the the pass defense later on and then the forced fumble right there on Young which also led to points. So he with his play turn in turn turn turn around and and and the offense was able to put up 10 points. So I think he just got the rally going man and he’s always consistent. Um yeah, so that’s my vote. When a running back goes for 16 and 143, that means that’s a hell of a game for a defender to get your vote without a doubt. and and and you know and then uh um Travis, he did not score today. I love the yardage and I got to be tough on him. I want to see it again and we got several more weeks for him to earn it, but the the way the season started, I just think that Foyer kind of set the tone and he delivered 10 points off turnovers is huge. I mean, he he was part of two takeaways today, a team that had nine all last season, right? And then big red zone stopped, the turnover on downs there. He had a lot to do with all that, too. So that’s my vote. Mike, I I was hoping to go first because I thought Fred was going Travis ET and I wanted to get some love in for Foyer cuz that’s exactly who I’m voting for as well. I mean, look, this team, Fred had nine turnovers all of last year. They had three today. He was involved in two of them. You just ran through everything that he did. But let’s give one little shout out here to Jordan Lewis who actually had two of those turnovers, recovered the fumble that Foyer forced and had his own pick. So, uh, both of those guys were everywhere, but you add in the tackles that go along with it. Uh, those guys were fantastic on the defensive side. We’ll make it unanimous then. Foyer Luick on the Jaguars Radio Network player of the game and plenty ahead. Fred, you’ve got a run. Yeah. Was it uh, who got Wingard’s uh, pick six called back with the holding? Ah, that was Jordan Lewis. All right, Jordan, give him the ball. And I’ll say that on my way out the door. That would have cost him the player of the game vote right there. Yes, that’s it. Give him the ball. I love it. We’ll talk to you next week. I’ll see you guys soon. Fred Taylor out of here. Plenty more ahead. [Laughter] [Music] Jags win it 26-10 over the Carolina Panthers. We’re back with more in a moment. An Everbank stats check when we return. It’s Jaguars postgame on the Jaguars Radio Network. The Jaguars bring performance, strength, and passion. What’s going on? How we doing? Hey Trevor, uh some uh big- time third down conversions today with your legs, but also finding Britain early. Dei Why were you guys able to have such success on third down today in your opinion? Yeah, I mean it’s uh obviously something that I know we’ve needed to improve on, you know, talking about last year weren’t great on third downs. So, I think, you know, emphasizing that in the offseason, but also just I felt like we were really prepared. Our plan was good um going in. You know, we ran some good stuff against Carolina’s defense and guys were in the right spot at the right time and I was able to get it to them. Um obviously still left some out there, but it felt good to hit those third downs and be able to keep the drives going. What it feel like being back on just being back on the field for you? It’s been a while. It’s been a while. Yeah, it felt great. It’s fun being back out there. Um, yeah. I guess I guess that’s all I got. But it was it was great. It was fun. Fun to get a win, man. That was awesome. How do you feel you operated the offense and the offense operated in general? I think there’s a lot to clean up. Um, you know, we’ll go back and and and look at it. I think operationally wasn’t terrible, but some of the penalties obviously we have to clean up. I thought a couple times were getting to the line a little slow and getting a little bit behind the play clock and we got to just improve that. And that starts with me just, you know, getting the call in quick and getting the guys up the line of scrimmage and going and playing and having that sense of urgency. So, I think there’s a couple of those. And then, um, yeah, just too many penalties in general, but hey, we found a way to get a win. Um, you know, found the end zone a couple times and were able to score points and our defense played great and ran the ball great. Did a lot of good things today and we won most importantly. So, um, we’ll go back and correct it. We got to keep getting better, but there’s definitely some stuff that we can learn from. Hey Trevor, uh congrats on the win. Um every, you know, this is like we’ve said before, this is your third different offense that you’ve had to work with and each offense takes a while to get used to. So how long has it been? Is it still a work in progress and or are you feeling much comfortable now with what coach Cohen is calling? I feel very comfortable. Every week is new though. The way you game plan um during the season is just so much different. So, it is like learning. I wouldn’t say like learning something new, but you’re you’re putting together a whole new plan for each opponent. So, it’s a lot of work that goes in during the week of not only film study of your opponent, but also studying your game plan and and what we’re doing, why we’re why we’re running this run against this look, and you know, why we’re trying to get this concept versus this coverage. There’s a lot of things that go into it. So, it’s just a lot of study each week to get ready so you feel great and can play fast on Sunday. And I thought, you know, myself and the guys did an awesome job this week of of preparing and we were ready to go and we we were ready for what Carolina was going to do. Um and I thought we played fast. Two for you on the scrambles. How important was it to get those first two out of the way knowing that’s how last season ended? Yeah. Uh not really something I thought about to be honest, but it I think just using your legs as a weapon in this league and um you see the way the league is, especially now a lot of it’s what you have to do. You know, defenses are good. They’re covering people up. it’s going to happen sometimes and uh they don’t have that extra defender for the quarterback. So, um just finding a way to use my legs and be able to keep the drives alive. And then you guys have been working toward week one since March. Is it is it a relief to get through it and just move on and get into the season now? Yeah, it feels it feels really good to get a win um to start your season that way. 1 and0 and obviously we’re going to enjoy it tonight and uh it’s hard to win in this league. So, you can’t take any of them for granted, but we got to move on quickly and get ready for um good team Cincinnati next week. So yeah, it feels great though, especially with all the new going on and the amount of work we put in this off seasonason and to be rewarded for, you know, this first week and getting that win feels good. But it’s just this week and we got to move on to next week. Does it feel any different uh as a new regime? I mean, you didn’t win your opener in the first regime, you didn’t win your opener in the second regime. Does this one feel maybe different or headed in a different direction? I think yeah, there’s a lot of Yes. Feels great where the direction we’re heading. Um, like I said, you can’t you can’t take it for what it is. We won in week one. We’re one and0 to start the season and we’re all pumped about that. A lot of work went into it and and we’re not any no one takes for granted, you know, how hard it is to win in this league. So, we’re all really proud of that. Uh, but it’s one game, so, you know, we got to keep doing it. That’s what consistency is what will uh be the difference. And we have to continue to prepare and play well. Over 200 yards on the ground. How pleasing was that? And why was the ground game able to be so effective today? Yeah, the guys I mean starts with the guys up front obviously guys up front and the wide outs too in the run game have really bought into to blocking downfield. You see Dami on Travis’s long run covering up the guy 50 yards down the field got Travis an extra I don’t know 30 yards. I mean, that stuff matters. And I think for those guys to buy in and do that on the perimeter and then to see it pay off in a game where it’s like, hey, you got 30 more yards cuz you ran down the field and covered up your guy that it’s cool to see the buyin from the whole team. Obviously, the guys up front, most selfless guys we got and they just, you know, are grinding it out. We ran it a lot and uh they wanted to keep doing it and they did a great job moving people and, you know, we were ready. We had a good plan. When when a defense has a day like today, three turnovers, two turnover run downs. What does that do for the offense? It’s awesome. I mean, you don’t you know, we had some drives where we didn’t do a great job where we got behind the chains and had a couple three and outs u you know, missed a throw, drop a ball, whatever it may be. Just a couple mishaps on offense. And then when your defense is is able to go get a stop and kind of erase that, uh it’s huge. I mean, as an offense, when you feel like, all right, we got a three and out, and then they go score immediately. Obviously, this football that’s going to happen sometimes, but it’s a good feeling when you know the defense goes out there and gets another three and out and you get the ball right back. Uh, that’s huge for for a team. And then with how much routine is the quarterback position, you’re in a rhythm in the game. What was that weather delay kind of like? Like what were you really doing during it? Yeah, it was weird. Uh, obviously having that delay when we already started and it was middle of the second quarter, so you know you’re about to come back in for halftime, too. But just keeping everyone focused. We we had some good conversations inside in the locker room of, you know, what they were doing. you know, if anything was different that they were doing that we didn’t plan for. Um, kind of what calls we’re looking to get to next, all that stuff. And then from there on, you’re just kind of relaxing, trying to cool off and hydrate, get the body back. It’s hot out there today. How’ Travis Hunter do today? He was great. Had some big catches obviously. Um, you know, I think he’s a weapon for us and he’s continue. He’s going to continue to get better and better. It’s a match up in space. Great with the ball in his hands. Um, you know, could have had more out there. I felt like I I could have gave him a few more opportunities and some of the ones I missed, but he had a good day today and we just got to keep building off it. No mistakes from him on the routes or anything like that. Liam said pretty perfect. He was great. He was great. He was prepared. Uh did a good job knowing the plan, um the position he plays. You got to kind of know, you got to know a lot cuz he’s involved in a lot in the run game. He’s involved obviously in the passing game and um he did a good job preparing. Were you trying to give Liam a game ball? I had one saved for him. Uh, Mr. Khan gave him one, so it was perfect. It’s good. Trevor, I know you’ve been very transparent with us about footwork and that being a real point of emphasis. I guess on the broadcast they brought up that really focus of you quite some time. Uh, can you just elaborate on that on like the footwork and the growth of it and how would you how you would evaluate it today? Yeah, you know, I have to watch the tape. There was a few times where um I’m sure there’s some stuff to clean up and in the game it’s never as perfect as practice cuz there’s live bullets flying and you’re moving and getting moved off the spot and you know there’s there’s always some stuff to correct but yeah it’s something that’s been a big focus obviously that you guys have known about asked me a lot since the spring and I put a lot of time in to working on it and I think it’s really helped me um and I got to continue to just get better at it and refine it but it’s been a change that’s been good. I mean, I wouldn’t say it’s anything major, but when you’re messing with your footwork as a quarterback and you’ve gotten thousands of reps a certain way, you know, it takes a lot of time to really master the new way. And I feel like I’m I’m on my way there and got to continue to work. Feel any different shape. Yeah, I got a lighter left forearm. So, no no sweaty wristband on there. Going to finish up. You win the toss and you take the ball. So, you know, how cool was that to incentive defer come out and be on offense and then I’m sure you wanted seven, settled for three, but 13 plays and taking six and a half minutes off the clock after the struggles on the first drive a year ago to put up points on your initial drive today. Felt great. Uh, just being aggressive. I think, you know, that speaks a lot to to Liam’s mindset and and what he wants to do and um how what he feels about our offense and the way we can attack and go get points and not afraid to do that. So, I think as an offense feeling that trust that he has in us and the aggressiveness, it’s great. It was awesome. Uh be able to get points. Obviously, like you said, you want to get seven there and we got behind the chains a couple times, but u besides that, able to put together a long drive, keep their offense off the field, settle into the game, kind of get in a flow. It was was good. Right. Thanks. Thank you all. Have a good night. Appreciate you. Boy is on his way. He’ll be about five minutes. Jaguars postgame continues. Let’s pause 10 seconds for station identification on the Jaguars radio network. Jaguars postgame brought to you by GEA, Government Employees Health Association. Benefits for federal employees and retirees. JP Shadrick with Mike Dempsey after a Jaguars win. Jags 26 Panthers 10. And time now for the defensive play of the game presented by Kingfish Pest Control and a number of defensive plays to choose from in this one. Three takeaways. They got in the back field a bunch today as well and bothered Bryce Young, but we’re going to go with the first interception. Foyer Alolu kind of off the tip ball, right, Mike? Absolutely. I think that uh just set the tone for the afternoon and they’re able to kind of continue on with that. Obviously, Dewey Winger’s pick six had it stood would have been the defensive play of the game, but I thought uh appropriate that Foyer, our defensive player, uh getting the first turnover of the season is the guy we highlight. Eric Murray with the pass defensed in that play to tip it up and then Luickin with the pick. Later had a forced fumble in the game as well. Could have gone Jordan Lewis with the interception and a fumble recovery in the games. There’s a lot of things to choose from today, which it’s nice to hear. This is how it’s supposed to be. I mean, they they dominated the Carolina Panthers. The Jaguars defense did for the most part. They scored that one touchdown uh after the Jags looked like they had a stop. Uh and they got a penalty that converted the first down there. And that’s the only score, the only touchdown they got in the game. Made it, I guess, a little bit interesting late, but uh you know, for the most part, kept them at arms length. One that we really saw come down today was Anton Harrison right tackle in the fourth quarter with a back injury. Um Idogga came in and played at right tackle at the very end of the game and got to watch that back. Those things can linger for a long time. We’ll see moving ahead what the the status is for Anton. But um you know and Anton needs a bounceback season at right tackle. He he struggled a little bit last year and it was a big piece of what they did today in the run game as well. And we’ll see what that injury has in store moving forward. Yeah, like you said, uh he played the offensive line as a whole played very well today, right? So that makes us extremely happy. And he did go out at a point where the Jags had a two-score lead there. So maybe that was an abundance of caution, but uh we won’t know until we get midweek and start getting some of those injury reports. Yep. There you have it. Jacksonville Jaguars postgame brought to you by GEA government employees health association benefits for federal employees and retirees. JP Shadrick with Mike Dempsey from the Hyundai studios. The US Hey Foyer, can you uh describe what happened on the two turnovers for us? the interception you had and then punching out the ball on Bryce Young. Yeah. Um the first one interception was a boot. Uh I saw the safety overtook the over. So I was just kind of being opportunist. Uh I thought he’s going to run it. He didn’t. Threw a contested throw. Uh Murray made a great play breaking it up and I saw the ball in the air. That’s like the tips and overthrows. We said we got to get those. So I saw it in the air, accelerated, made sure I caught the ball. Yeah. And then uh came down with it. But it was just a good good play all around for the whole defense. And then the punch out. Oh yeah, punch out. Dropped in my zone. And then this time he did run it. He crossed the line of scrimmage. So, um I hate when quarterbacks kind of do that, but it’s it’s cool. You know, he’s trying to get his extra yards and stuff. So, we decided to go head first and uh you know, you don’t want to dive on the guy and maybe get the the penalty. So, you know, we put the ball out as he was stumbling forward. So, uh he’s already going to the ground. Might as well take my shot at it. got the ball there and I felt it the air come out the uh the side there. So I knew the ball was on the ground. I saw a whole bunch of our guys hustling after the ball so I assumed we got it. Started running. Oh, over here. Um have you ever experienced anything quite like uh an hour and six minute delay in a game before at any level of football? And what do you do in those hour that hour time? Yeah. Um actually my first ever game I guess it wasn’t a delay. It was just a uh we hadn’t started um kind of Thursday night game I guess kind of similar how this year started off uh Eagles game and it was raining and stuff so uh I understood you know you got to wait for them to say you can go back on the field to warm up and stuff but it was great how we handled it really. I like how the strength strength staff had everything kind of organized for us. We went over some adjustments and kind of like a little mini halftime and then we were already stretching inside, came back outside, had a good organized uh warm-up period and then we took the confidence that we had had going into that break, came back out with some adjustments and just kept it flowing. So I think we handled it very good and um yeah, nobody was really surprised by it at all. Boy, getting to what was it three turnovers or whatever it is today? That was something the defense wasn’t able to really do a ton of last year. How good does it feel to get off to a start like that? Uh, I just, you know, I talked to the guys already that, you know, we put a lot of work in this whole off season, new faces in here. We’ve gained a lot of trust and a lot of good camaraderie it feels like on that side of the ball really with the team. And then it’s coming out here and put a good product on field on film. Uh, feels good. You know, you come out, you know, put in all that work and if it doesn’t go well now, you’re starting to second guess a little bit just naturally. So, just come out here and feel like we have we played well. Obviously, there’s stuff that we should improve on, we need to improve on, but uh coming out here and and then everybody flying around, everybody, you know, keeping that camaraderie that we had from the offseason to this first game, I mean, it just felt great. So, getting the turnovers, like we’re doing stuff right, let’s keep doing it. Let’s keep improving on it. And Murray and Lewis both had, you know, big plays on defense with you guys, the two new guys coming in, how much of an impact do they make? And and when you see the veterans doing that, how does that help like maybe some of the younger guys? Yeah, I love it because when they when they play well, you know, they’re good examples in the locker room already. Uh how they go about their business. Um talking about meeting whenever I want to call a meeting, they’re ready to meet. Um doing extra being having a routine and stuff. So if they see success at that level now in the DB room as well, uh you know, they’re going to fall, I’d say, in line, but they’re going to maybe implement what gets them success. and uh you know having them carry from camp and practice to the game, you know, who wouldn’t want to have that same success how they play. Uh they play well, communicate well, play hard, tackle hard. I love playing with them right now. So, uh everybody, you know, getting on that that same page, you know, we can be very dangerous defense. You told us that you feel like in this defense they can let you be more of a playmaker. What was it like just seeing that kind of be vindicated first game right out of the gate? Yeah. Um, I feel like I had good years being a playmaker and I felt that kind of same energy just how they stressed about talking about the ball, the ball, the ball. Um, so getting back to that, I I put it on myself really cuz I I put it out to y’all. I wanted to be a playmaker. So, you know, they gave me the opportunity to have my eyes back more on the ball, maybe breaking up uh not having to run all over the place with wheel routes and stuff. So, it’s really trusting the rush, uh, making the right break angles, and then when the ball does present itself, uh, kind of how the coaching staff harps on getting the ball, let’s all go attack the ball. So, it’s a good start for us. We have to keep it going through the year, but, um, you know, they come in bunches. So, uh, they start now. Let’s keep it going and see where this takes us. And then you guys have four new guys up front, a couple new guys in the secondary. What does it say just to see you guys gel together so quickly? Like I said, it’s really the hours in the offseason. uh you know, spending time together, uh trusting one another, trusting that we’re all going to be in the same spot. But really, seeing them make plays, it’s like, all right, that’s what he’s capable of. Um I trust him to do that now. And then, you know, coming to this game, they see me make plays, see the defensive line make plays, you know, the run game. Uh everybody’s attacking their gaps hard, you know, keep building off of that. But it’s definitely solid to see. Uh Jordan already tweeted that you should have been an allp pro the last three years. So, uh, what does it mean to have hype men like those guys? Like I I I said this to a couple guys in the locker room. I don’t want to call it subdued, but it felt like a business-like approach after this win. Maybe not as euphoric. It was, hey, all right, good win, but we’re we check the box and now we’re moving on, right? Uh, to be a dominant defense, it takes the whole season. You know, you can’t go ups and downs or you got to really stack games. You got to stack streaks and stuff. So to come out is definitely a good tone setting game about like I said earlier we got a lot of stuff to clean up and I like also I said earlier we got good vets who are going to come in kind of go through these meetings understand what we have to do better and I love you know working with them so far so then we’re all each other’s hypeman I told everybody we got to celebrate our wins the little ones the big ones um I appreciate Jay Lou shouting me out like that uh cuz he knows he kind of you know we’re close so he knows kind of the little stuff that I think about as my career has been gone on and it is what it is, but I just want to keep producing how I know I’m capable of producing and then all that stuff, you know, it comes as it as it comes. But that I can’t control that, but I can play well for my boys for sure. And then one other thing that you’ve talked to us about is because you can play a little more free, but also because as opposed to being the eraser, you feel like everybody around you knows their assignment. Did that shine through today? Uh, yeah, we definitely played with a lot of trust today. I think we play with a lot of trust and there’s stuff that we should clean up to to make sure we’re executing our calls and stuff, but we play with a lot of trust and that’s just a lot of bank reps to through the preseason playing it the same way each and every day. So, uh, appreciate Coach Camp really, you know, putting those installs in and hammering details and communication, but we got, it’s just the first game, so we got to see how that keeps growing all the way through the season. But it was cool. It was fun. Uh, foyer. Yeah. Uh, foyer. Um, as John mentioned, there were a lot of guys on defense that were kind of new, but there was one guy who returned to this team and Dwayne Smoot. How big an impact has he had in his return to the Jags and how much did you guys miss him last year? It’s cool to see how the guys really rally around him kind of camaraderie as I keep mentioning. Uh, he came in and um, you know, he had to get acclimated and stuff, but once he did, like you know, the guys got a lot of trust in him and he’s kind of versatile up there on the defensive line. plays inside, can’t go outside, run the stunts and all that. So, I just saw them working and communicating. I don’t really know, you know, what they be doing up there. They just uh I know what they’re doing, but you know, uh I saw the how how how much they clicked very early and like him coming back, you know, they know what he does well. they they’re really playing off of each other and stuff and everybody is having a communicated rush plan and that’s very important for D lineman to make sure that you know the rush lanes are going to be closed or when they can rush up the field versus come under and stuff. So uh you know them embracing him again was really cool to see but I you know like an established veteran who’s seen a lot of football I like how they communicate with them. All right, sir. He’s got the room. 20 into the open field. 40 35 40 45 50 into Panther territory. 40 35 along the left sideline. He’s getting attacked at the 20 yd line. An explosive run from Travis ETN to the 20 yd line of the Carolina Panthers. 71 y for Travis ETN set up just a few plays later. The Brian Thomas Jr. 9yd touchdown run. That is the call of the game presented by Coy Fence. Since 1927, we’ve been around the block and fenced it two. Welcome back. Scoreboard show continues. JP Shadrick with Mike Dempsey and Jaguars get it done 26-10 over the Carolina Panthers. And the scoreboard show is presented by Everbank. Advantage you make the most out of your money at everbank.com/jaguars. And let’s let’s continue with this Jaguars running game. ETN with a 71 uh yarder there. Put together a really fantastic output the rest of the day also, but all four backs had a role in the game today. The offensive line set the tone with their physical play to open up those holes and kept the quarterback clean today. So, yeah, not only the run game, but when they had to pass it, I mean, quarter the quarterback got hit one time today. No sacks. I mean, this is from an offensive line perspective a really strong start to the season minus some penalties, some holding calls, some things happened, but they kept the quarterback clean and they ran for 200. Yeah, they they had some penalties, but they overcame a good number of penalties as well. And uh let’s be honest here, the Travis CTN had a great day running the ball. The Jags overall, you know, uh Bigsby 2.4 yards a carry, Basil Tutin 3.7. So, it wasn’t like everybody was picking up big yards. ETN came to play today and uh the 71 yard was kind of like the back breaker in a way. Flipped the field. Jags able to put some more points on the board there. But uh you know early on JP it honestly surprised me. They came out and I thought they I think everyone thought they were going to run very heavy right from the outset and they really threw the ball a lot on that opening drive and were able to move the ball uh quite well. But then as the game settled down and and who knows how much the weather delay affected things too because Trevor Lawrence’s numbers after that weren’t great. Uh and but you know that that’s a big break you’ve got to have. But overall man if Travis ETN gives you anything resembling that or any one of the backs even if it’s a different guy every week you’ve got some options. But I think what he showed you today that he is deserving of being looked at as the feature back on this football team. He handled more carries than all the rest of them combined. Uh easily outpaced them all in yardage and yards per carry. So only thing missing was finding the end zone. Yeah. But uh that set up a touchdown just a few plays later as we said and really fantastic performance today for Travis ETN Jr. 16 for 143 and 8.9 average today including that 71 yer on the ground for the Jaguars. Uh let’s come back in a moment. We’ll get to the defensive performance again. dig a little deeper there on the three takeaways and much more for the Jaguars in a win today 26-10 over the Carolina Panthers. It’s a scoreboard show on Jaguars radio. Frankie here. When you want barbecue in Jacksonville, you want Bono’s Pit Barbecue. Scoreboard show continues right now. Welcome back. Schoolboard show continues. No phone calls tonight. JP Shadric, Mike Dempsey, Brian Ston joining us now in studio. and welcome in Brian to have you. Absolutely. Uh 20 to 26-10 uh all around. We we were talking about the running game and the offensive line a moment ago. We’re flipping now to the defensive side and a season after they had nine takeaways for the year. They have three in one game today. Foyer Aluan should have four. Yeah. And he’s and Foy Luan now in his third different defensive scheme with the Jaguars alone. Think about that. uh comes through with an interception, a force fumble today. Jordan Lewis is big, Eric Murray with a tip ball. There are guys making plays everywhere. You know who my player of the game was going to be? It was Dewey Wingard. I mean, it seemed like he made tackle after tackle where he got his arms on a guy and put him on the ground. I mean, I thought he was sensational. And when he intercepted that pass and took it back, I I stamped him. Here’s my guy. And then, you know, the foul way away from the ball didn’t make a lot of sense. But I thought they tackled well. I thought other than a few runs early where they got creased and and Jabba Hubard is a pretty good player. Um I I thought they were dramatically better than they had been against the run at any point since maybe the midpoint of the 2023 season. Yeah, I mean Chuba on the day 16 carries for 57 yards. You’ll take that all day against the team’s leading tailback. He got loose out of the backfield for the touchdown. But in terms of you’re right, Brian, there was more congestion created by the Jaguars interior of the defensive line. And even if they were gaining positive yardage, it was like one, two, wasn’t a big gashing holes. Yeah, they had 110 yards rushing, but it was five times that Bryce Young got out of the pocket and and beat them. And early on, he was the only reason they were moving the chains. I mean, his inability or pardon me, their inability to get him on the ground. Another part of it was the different pressure looks they brought today. Jordan Lewis had the the corner blitz at one point, got the contact on Bryce Young, weird throw, and then they had a a a game on the outside with Smoot and Josh Hines Allen that they crossed up and it broke Smoot free for the sack. There’s a lot of pieces, you know, there’s a lot of different things you can do with Emanuel Agba out there with uh with Smoot back. You can chase the quarterback and tire him out when 41 and 44 are on the sidelines, which should theoretically help in time, right? because you bring those guys back out and they’re chasing a quarterback that hasn’t had a chance to get arrest. So, there are a lot of pieces and a lot of guys uh Dennis Gard is another guy. Yes, he had one play, it wasn’t a rush, although he had a couple of rushes where he screamed down the sideline and just hit Hubard so hard and just pummeled him into the ground early on. It was the first time they had stopped him in fact. So, it was the opening drive for Carolina. And you can see where that guy can can get after it and do some things. So, there’s a lot of pieces for them to work with. Yeah, I think we talked about it at halftime. One of the biggest tone setting plays in this game was when the Panthers kicked the field goal because they had to settle for that because of Jordan Lewis breaking up the pass to Hunter Refro, right? And he and he it was a veteran move because he knew he was beat, but he just watched Renfro’s eyes and his hands to shoot out and then he shot his hands and never turned and saw the ball and broke it up perfectly and forced that field goal right there. Where was that all of our lives? I mean, last year, how many times were we hoping for a play like that? Jordan Lewis has just been a revelation for this football team. It’s fantastic today with the exception of the penalty on the on the field obviously, but in the locker room, I mean, remember that was a secondary that was just its tail was dragging at the end of last year. I mean, they were so ineffective. They gave up so many big plays. We talked about it hours ago, Mike, and to see the way that they’re playing right now, JP. Um, you wouldn’t know that they had statistically the worst season in Jaguars history a year ago. Now, there’s some new players, right? Murray comes in and Jordan Lewis comes in. Um, but they had some guys that were there last year. Jarian Jones, Tyson Campbell. How about Tyson Campbell’s playing the goal line by the way? Big. The secondary is a U week one. Uh, what do you call it? I don’t even know what to say. Um, warm fuzzy bright spot. Well, you’re right about that play by Tyson Campbell. That’s a touchdown. You know, it’s a fourth down play. So, that’s a like a turnover. As Liam Cohen said, hey, we got the three turnovers. We got two turnover on downs play. So, five stops by the defense or five times they handed the ball back to two on fourth down in their territory. One at the five and one at the 36 or wherever it was. So, they listen what a fun game. I mean, it wasn’t the prettiest of game at times, but it was a fun game because they did some things that we guys like us have been talking about since training camp began. Yeah. Uh safety play. You mentioned Andrew Winger, but Murray with the tip ball that caused the first interception, but he also broke up a pass with a perfect hit on a wide receiver over on Hunterfro. Yeah. fantastic play on that one as well. So, um, contributions all around the secondary for the Jaguars and the the run defense there today as well. So, a good start for Anthony Campanelli and his group in week one of the season. We’ll come back in a moment. Back to the offensive performance and Trevor Lawrence today, playing off that run game and running himself a few times. We’re back in a moment. Welcome back. Scoreboard show continues. JP Shadrick, Mike Dempsey, Brian Sexton from the Hyundai studios at the Miller Electric Center. Jags 26, Panthers 10 in week one. Jags 1 and0 headed to Cincinnati next week in week number two. And we continue our conversation now about this um Jags win. Back on the offensive side of the football and Trevor Lawrence, his third offense now in five seasons in the NFL. Finished 19 of 31 passing, 178 through the year. Touchdown interception. Used his legs four different times for 12 yards including a 10- yard run. Moved the sticks at one point there. Just seemed like everything was in command overall today. Just the first glance at it. The run game helps you do that too, right Brian? Well, he also had time to throw. I mean, there was some pressure, Mike, but there was plenty of time for Trevor to stand in the pocket. Um, and make a couple of better throws along there. He missed Brian Thomas once or twice where it’s like, whoa, you don’t normally miss that. And then the one ball he threw in the direction of Travis Hunter down the field. If it’s just a little bit higher and JC Horn did make a great play, but just a little bit higher. I thought it was good, you know. I mean, he can play better and he was the first person to say it. I was over in the uh the post game and I mean it was one of the very first things he said is it felt good. Feels good to win. We got to do a lot of things better. Yeah, I thought he was really good in the first half and then after the delay, not as much. Right. At at halftime, I think he might have been 14 out of 17. He finished 19 for 31 passing. So, it kind of fell off a little bit as the game went on. And, you know, that’s okay. There’s room for improvement. But, he did he he missed one that he sailed on Brian Thomas. He underthrew the one to Hunter. Really, even the first throw of the game was kind of a dangerous throw because he had Brian Thomas who was locked up. He was one-on-one. So, I understand taking the shot, but he I don’t know if he underthrew to basically hit the defender kind of like in the back. It looked like he was trying to throw to the outside shoulder, but it was a chance throw. It was a chancy throw. But hey, look, uh, you know, you had to, it was a a hell of a play for the interception. So, for the most part, he protected the ball well. But to your point, JP, to have the running game and to create play action set up Trevor. So, the confidence level that he’s got on a couple of different levels. One, the guys up front. Uh, two, the weapons that he’s got with Brian and with Deami Brown and with Travis Hunter. And then three, to have a running game that he knows can gain positive yardage. I I think the quarterback regardless of the system, his confidence level is got to be high enough this year that he’s going to be able to deliver. And that offensive line today allowed one quarterback hit. I mean, they were bringing pressures and all kind of things today and only hit one time in the game. No sacks. And that has been an issue throughout his career here. The the confidence to stand in there and step through a throw has not been there. The one hit was obviously the the intentional grounding and he should have gotten rid of the ball faster than that. I mean, he should. That’s one thing he has to learn to do better is not try to be the hero and live to fight another play. We saw that last year in Philly on that final drive, right? Countless times through his career, he’s trying so hard to make a play. It was first down at the what 19 yd line. No problem. Throw the ball away. Second and 10 is just as good. So, good performance today. He also had a new weapon to throw to today. and Travis Hunter who started the day on offense for the most part. Eight targets, six catches for 33 yards. He did come out on defense after the weather delay, but much more of his time today on the offensive side of the ball. Made sense. Carolina run heavy. You know, he’s not going to go fill gaps in the run game most likely. But, uh, Travis Hunter making some catches today in his debut. Yeah, it might be a different story next week how he’s used, but for today, if Trevor lays that ball out and Hunter catches that and goes the distance, he’s leading Sports Center tonight. Oh, without a doubt. Right. I mean, cuz, you know, everybody wants to know what the Travis Hunter experience is going to be like. And if he scores, that probably puts him over 100 yards on the day. And then you’re you’re talking about a different story. He had a really big smile on his face when he was asked when he came to the podium about a half an hour ago and he said, “Uh-huh. I would have scored.” Oh, yeah. Right. uh he was much more talkative, you know, since the middle of training camp. He kind of clamped down a little bit and wasn’t as effusive, right? I mean, we know he’s got a big personality. He didn’t let it out. Um he was smiling ear to ear. He really enjoyed it today. And the thing again that I liked was he said, “I’ve done this a long time and I know how much better I can be than I was today.” Great. That’s what you want to hear from the number two overall pick who had six catches for 33 yards. I can play better. I know what I’m capable of doing and I think the Jaguars do too. Look, they got 33 yards and they got 11 receiving yards out of Brian Thomas. Yeah. And they won easily, right? So, they were in control. There are going to be days when uh they’re putting up a lot more points than they did today. Unlike last year, though, they did try to force the ball into Brian Thomas. I mean, they were putting that ball. Yeah, it felt like it. I don’t know what the number of actual targets was, but I mean, seven. He only had one catch. Yeah, seven targets. Had one drop. it one drop and then the one where he was shoved out of bounds and couldn’t get his foot down. So, you want him to have his hands on the ball a whole lot more, but you’ve got guys that can do it if the defense isn’t going to give it to you. Demi Brown made a nice catch. Um Travis Hunter there and Brenton Strange, you guys talked a lot about him yet? I mean, four catches on four targets, 59 yards, and the key block to break a 71 yard open. That really was. When you watch that replay from the end zone view, it’s unbelievable. What a terrific all-around player he is. Crushed it. Awesome. Good to see. Oh, and Hunter Long, by the way, first career touchdown. That’s kind of crazy. Fifth year in the league. Wow. Just who you thought would get the first one. Right. Right. Right. So, good all-around day for the Jaguars certainly today in a 26-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Let’s come back. Final time out. We’ll preview next week. We’re on to Cincinnati. Let’s go. Let’s another cat fight. Sorry, that’s Someone’s going to write that. Someone’s going to say that. I figured I’d be the first. Backto back cat bites. This is the scoreboard show on Jaguars Radio. And now it’s on to Cincinnati, a team that won today on the road in Cleveland 1716. You know, you’re expecting this big offensive performance from Cincinnati and they underwhelmed at least statistically today. Jamar Chase had two catches for 26 yards last I looked. Is that what he finished with? I think that’s what he finished with. Yeah. Yeah. It’s not mistaken. Um yeah, Chase, yeah. Two for 26 on five targets today. Burrow 14 to 23, 113 through the year and a touchdown. That’s uh really it today. I’m going to bet we can’t count on Jamar Chase being held under 27 next week. I’m just going to say. Right. So Oh, that’s is that a challenge to the secondary? All right. Yeah, absolutely. I’ll buy you guys uh dinner next week if we hold your march. The odds are 27 yards. Yeah, the odds are in your favor, you know. Yeah, it’s what it is. All right. I’m I’m all for it. What’s their defense going to be like? Who’s the Bengals? Okay. I wasn’t sure who you’re talking about there. I mean, it it played pretty well today. The the defense did, you know. Uh Hendrickson had a sack and obviously without him, they’d be a completely different unit. Um they’re okay. I mean, I don’t Cleveland’s not the most explosive offense in the league, but I think Flaco can still spin it. You know, he’s got some decent weapons. So, it’s a question for Mark Duffner, who’s hanging around these air waves these days. So, he was there last year on their defensive staff. That’s right. Uh two takeaways um for Cincinnati in this game today. Two interceptions. So, we’ll see. We’ll hear from Duff coming up on Thursdays on Jaguars Happy Hour every week. Tremendous insight. No doubt. Great coach. Need a little help from the Rams here. Holding on to this one. They’re up 14 to9 about 10 to go against the Texans. And last I looked, Denver up by a single point on the Titans. So be nice to get those. Indie got a win today. Dominated Miami. Yeah, they look good. Change coming to Miami, it sounds like. I mean, if they keep playing like that. Oh, yikes. They had high expectations. Uh the a lot of positives today for the Jaguars, of course, winning results there, 200 yards rushing, three takeaways on defense, but some things to work on too. 11 penalties in this game today. It’s one blemish on an otherwise strong performance. Well, the early holding penalties. Listen, I was really encouraged by the fact that they overcame uh first and 20 twice on that opening drive and then Trevor held the ball just too long, took the intentional grounding and they couldn’t overcome that and had to kick the field goal. You had a couple of others that seemed like silly penalties along the way. First game, the coach is probably going to just beat that drum all week long. And overall, the the operation looked clean. Sideline to player, every everything at least from the outside looking in was in order on the sideline. That’s a valuable point because it’s the first time Liam Cohen has been a head coach and the first time that both men were were coordinators, Grant Udinsky and Anthony Capanily, right? And then Tony Baselli’s in his role and he handles the football operation of this place. Um and the general manager James Gladstone. So it it wasn’t just a given that everything was going to go smoothly. These guys are all doing it for the first time even though they’ve been around the league a long time. And so congratulations to them. Jags AM tomorrow. Tomorrow. Absolutely. What time? Sometime uh in the morning. 10 o’clock tomorrow morning. 10 o’clock tomorrow morning. Yes. 10 o’clock. Jaguars.com. 1. Good win. However, Brian Thomas Jr. with just 1 catch for 11 yards is unacceptable for a receiver of his caliber. He and Trevor need to get on the same page. Yes, it’s only Week 1, I get it—but this can’t happen again.
