Astros DEMOLISH Angels as Luis Garcia Makes Triumphant Return to Mound

Luis Garcia’s return to the mound was a really good one. The offense decided to give him support and Jose Altuve, well, he did a great job today. Let’s talk about this series split right now. Yes. Uh, somebody hit the foul pole today. So, we’re going to go and talk about that as well. Luis Garcia much much needed return to the rotation. I don’t think Astros fans know how much this was needed. And also uh we’ll kind of talk about the roster moves. We already talked about yesterday, but the big highlight of the day is going to be the Yankee series. The Yankees are coming to town and hopefully the Astros take care of business. But Brett, offense has been a big thing issue for the Houston Astros recently. But in today’s game, it was not. No, it was not. And they they did exactly what you want a team to do, especially on a guy returning from the from the IIL from a long road to recovery back. I mean, they pile on 12 hits, Eric. They scored one run in the second through the sixth inning. That’s six straight in, five straight innings of scoring runs. And then in the eighth, they poured on the three runs. But it was really, really good to see the support that they gave Garcia because they’re in the midst of a division race. They’re in the midst of trying to get to number one or number two. And everybody wondered, how is Garcia going to react to the new windup that he had to use, the new arm slot that he’s using? He been had been having success in his rehab starts, but wasn’t going to translate here. and he looked excellent on the mound. Um, this is a complete game. This is a win that you need to pile more on this because if you can do this on a more consistent basis and you get hot at this part of the season, Eric, with what 19 games left, 20 games left, right, then you can really see the advantage that the Astros have, I think, over the other clubs as the Mariners right now are losing seven to nothing to the Rays. So, eight to nothing. So, we are locked on Rays today. There you go. locked on rays, man. Um, our guys over there are doing their job keeping the boys down. But look, at the end of the day, Luis Garcia coming back is a breath of fresh air, you know. Yeah, we’ll go and talk about Luis Garcia in the second segment. Let’s go and focus on the offense because uh did something they haven’t been doing a lot. They scored a lot of runs. Not only did they score eight runs, but they also were uh what six for 15 with runners in scoring position and uh this was after uh Brett, this is crazy. They were five for 42 in the last what five or six games uh with runners in scoring position. It was something crazy like that. So the the Astros, they kind of come out sometimes. They they have this where it looks like the offense is back and then they go into this uh kind of they put their head back in their shell and kind of go back into hibernation for a little bit. But uh this is the offense that we expect from this team, especially with Alvarez back, especially with Jake Myers. I think that you’ll probably see him maybe come back maybe in three to four days. I think um that’s the timetable. But you had Pino with two hits. You had Alvarez with two hits. Um, you had Altuve not only with that home run, he hit the foul bowl. I believe that means everybody gets some Chick-fil-A tomorrow, but um, he also had that three RBI’s on the night, two hits. Kaha had a hit. Yiner Diaz had a hit. Uas had, uh, two hits and two RBI’s. And Cam Smith, I know a lot of people have been dissing on Cam Smith, but he’s looking pretty good recently. He’s been getting a little bit more hits. And he also had two stolen bases today. He had Pina with a stolen base. He had Christian Walker with stolen base. And then Jacob Milad would win as well. No. Yeah, definitely. And with Urias, he now has five hits in, I believe, 14 at bats versus Usay Kikuchi. Four of those five hits are home runs. Eric, um, you know, this guy’s come on this team and he has basically just been a consistent contributor at the plate, in the field. You like having this guy here in the clubhouse. He’s a veteran. Um, he knows how to play. He’s a gold glover from Baltimore and, you know, Baltimore’s not doing anything. So, you know, he’s super glad to be here. But when Diaz, Urias, and Smith are all getting hits at the back end of of this of this lineup, that means that this lineup gets extended. You know, Dubon did go 0 for three, but he walked once. He didn’t have any strikeouts, and he is there to flip the lineup. And Pñena continued, look, 307 for Jeremy Pñena. Absolutely. Awesome. Um, and look, I do want to say this. You had said that this is what we expect from this offense, but honestly, this offense is very underwhelming. By record over the course of this season, they’re not a powerful offense. I think this offense has potential to be like this on a consistent basis, but they haven’t shown that to us. That’s why it’s important that now with the small sample size, why don’t we go ahead and run off a few? Why don’t we go in and go on a seven or eight game win streak like Dana Brown talked about on the radio this week? And they are capable. They just haven’t shown us the ability to sustain the run production to sustain the hits with runners in scoring position because many times, Eric, have we commented on games this year where they’ve gotten double digit hits and only two or three runs. Right. So, this is the kind of game, and I don’t care if it’s against the Angels, this is the kind of game that you’ve got to at least get a series split. At least they didn’t lose three out of four. At least they split. Um because you just came off a series that you should have swept. And so, um the Astros are looking better at the plate. They’re looking more confident. Um and Alua even said after the game, “Look, I had a better game today. I had a better approach. I realized I’m swinging at basically everything.” And so I stopped swinging at everything and what did he do? He connected with the home run, his 24th of the year. Yeah. And um I like the um Yeah, they still had eight runners left on base, but there were six or 15 like I said earlier and two out RBI’s. They had Pina, Alvarez, Korea, and Altuve. So they still somehow find a way to have success with uh two outs. This is a sign of a team that can be successful in the postseason when you get those clutch hits. And so I I think what I was talking about is coming into the season, you expected Alvarez to have um some good offensive output. You expected a lot of these guys to be off offensive juggernauts. Um you expected Christian Walker to come out there and really deliver on that contract. And so that’s what I was talking about. So, this is potentially what you should be seeing the Astros doing. And now they have 24 games left to actually uh correct you earlier. I think you said 1920 or whatever it was, but 24 is how many games they have left. And this is how many games they have to not only um figure out things out to get Jake Myers back in, get him comfortable with big league pitchers pitching, but also to figure out who’s going to be in the playoffs and really what type of chemistry, who’s going to be on the roster, and because sometimes some players work, some players don’t. So yeah, uh, one guy that I think is probably pitched his way onto the rotation, uh, in the playoffs is probably Luis Garcia. We’ll go and talk about the next. So, I know I kind of teased that maybe Luis Garcia maybe pitched his way onto the uh postseason roster. I don’t think he’s going to be in the rotation, but they need somebody that’s going to be a long guy. So, I think I I think I said roster. If I said rotation, I’m maybe I misspoke, but I meant roster. You said rotation, but you meant roster. Okay, that makes sense. Yeah. So, I think that you need somebody that can pitch out of the bullpen and let’s say somebody gets lit up for eight runs in the first inning, you need to go ahead and have somebody come in and kind of be the bridge. Don’t put that on us now. Come on now. Someone gives up eight. Could you think of a lesson in 2025? Brett, what do you expect? Expect the unexpected. Alvarez has been the king for the Houston Astros for so long and then he’s Eric. Yeah. Dial it down. Dial down your pessimism. But when we give examples, we’ve got to use our ro our Astros colored glasses. We can’t say give up eight runs. A few runs. I mean, take it easy. Sorry. Always positive, always stro. Yes. Thank you. Thank you. I’m so sorry about that. You learned something. You should know, Eric, by now. But you know, here here’s the thing. Luis Garcia winning today is huge, Eric, because you got to win. You’re six and four in your last 10. You’re closer to Toronto. I think you can catch Toronto. Um I thought Detroit was going to be the team you could catch. Um but if you can get that one or two seed, you can get that buy. It gives you some rest. It gives you time to really rethink and set that lineup um for that first playoff series. Luis Garcia, I believe if he’s consistent and misses bats and gets strikeouts and keeps the walks off the board that he absolutely is going to be a guy that will be on this playoff roster. Not only because of what he does, but also because of what he has done and he has the experience. And that playoff experience from a pitching standpoint, mentally speaking, is irreplaceable. Those are the intangibles. Those are things that you want. you know, um, people joke about Will Smith being on all these World Series teams. So, the bottom line is teams must trust him to have him around and put him on playoff rosters. You know what I’m saying? So, there is value in him. I trust Luis Garcia way more than I trust Lance McCulla’s Jr. right now. Yeah. I believe that Luis Garcia topped out at 93.5 miles per hour on the fast ball, but he averaged about 91.4 on the fast ball. So, the velocity was down. Maybe it’s the new delivery. U maybe he’s just not totally built up. We have to remember that this guy is coming off of not pitching uh in the big leagues for two and a half years, 28 months, however you want to look at it. So, it’s been a while. So, um he tried to come back a couple times and then he was shut down. So, the fact that he’s even pitching this year is actually very impressive. But he uh went came in today six innings, three hits, three earned runs, zero walks. That’s very impressive with what the Astros have been doing pitching wise that we’ll talk about what the pitching the starting pitching has been doing in a second. But the zero walks, that’s something that a lot of the starters have been struggling. That’s big. Six strikeouts, 79 pitches, 52 strikes. This is what made Luis Garcia so good in the first place. and this what made him on put him on the map for Astros fans for um um I guess in the past. So I think that what he did today was great. I’m glad that the Astros did not rush him back. They gave him time to uh stretch out to get ready down in Triple A. And so um I’m I’m glad for this. Um I’ll tell you what the Astros rotation has done in a second. Yeah. Um, you know, like I said, this game, complete game, we talked about the offense earlier, the pitchers coming in, and look, guy, you know, Brian King, um, I don’t know if you’ve seen this, but his stats lately have been really, really good. Pretty much every runner he’s inherited, he hasn’t let score lately. So, he’s been on a run. The pitchers have been pitching better. They have been getting outs. They have been keeping the other team off the board. And what has been missing has been the offense. So because of that, Luis Garcia was able to leave the game with the win in the win, you know, with the W and the Astros didn’t give that up. So therefore, he got that first win coming back. And you know, that’s a huge boost. And they they asked Garcia after the game, were you nervous? He said, I wasn’t nervous, but I was feeling some emotions. I was trying to keep calm. Um and then Jobat said, just to see him go out there and compete, to see the smile on his face. I’m proud of him. He really worked hard to get to this point. I thought he threw the ball really well. He got the cutter, threw the fast ball up in the zone when he needed, very efficient when he stayed away from the middle of the plate. And Joe Spot also said, “You got to be patient. It takes a while both mentally and physically to get where they were years ago. We want them to just go out there and be lights out from the get-go. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t. So, we saw Spencer Arrigetti not perform as good as we would have wanted, but he’s rounding into shape. So, sometimes um you just got to wait for it. But this rotation, Brett, I want to put these numbers up. This is from tags, but uh this home stand, they have a 206 erra and 43 and two/3 innings so far with six quality starts in the seven outings. And Jason Alexander was one out away from getting another quality start. So the Astros rotation as yes uh you might have had some issues u with a road trip but this home stand has not been an issue. It hasn’t been the pitching. It has been the offense. So it’s very good sign that the Astros did have the 12 hits today. Scored eight runs. They had the six hits with runners in scoring position. Yeah. You had the five hits with uh with two outs to drive and run. So the Astros are they are capable of giving run support to the this team. So now they like you said they need to just find a way to do this more often and not make this be a small sample size. Have them do it more often. Rinse and repeat. That’s right. Um and that’s the thing going into this play going into this stretch where you’re getting close to the end of the season. You you don’t want to go out and feel like you have to score double digit runs, but you know where where the magic lies. What is it? When the Astros score, how many runs should they score in order for them to have a very high probability of winning? No. Four. Four runs or more. You know this. I think you were just messing with me. Yes. Four runs or more. They are 55 and 13 now when scoring four runs or more. And when they hit a home run, Eric, they’re 64 and 28. So, I I mean, let’s see some more long balls. I love that José Altuve feels like he’s getting in the groove. And that should make all the other teams and their fan bases shudder in their boots because when Altuve is hot, when he’s seeing the ball, well, he’s cranking out home runs. Even if we play Boston, he loves hitting home runs in Boston. So, they do have what eight is it? Eight three game um series left and I believe 15 on the road and um what is that like 15 games on the road and like eight eight at anyways they’ve got fewer games at home than they do on the road and they’re all three game series. There’s no four game series and there’s no twoame series. So, they needed to go two out of three for the rest of the season and I think they cement the West Division uh championship. Well, I think right now the focus needs to be on the Yankees. Yankees are coming down. We’ll go and talk about this next on the Lockdown Astros podcast. Hey guys, what’s the upside of playing the Yankees? Well, you have a good chance of winning, but what about getting gas? Apple Odyssey, Spotify, wherever you listen your podcast. Go and check us out. Go and check out Michael Connor with the Locked On Astros podcast as well. And go and check out the Locked On Yankees podcast. I’m sure they’re going to have a lot of great things to say about the Astros during this series. Uh because they love the Astros. Yankees fans love the Astros. But before we talk about the Yankees, Brett, let’s go ahead and briefly mention uh the roster moves. Uh there were some moves like we talked about. Luis Garcia was added, Taylor Tra was added to the roster as they expanded to 28. We kind of predicted this, but they also had to designate um who who was it that they designated for assignment? Um I just had it here, but it was an outfielder. Um, sorry, infielder. We’ll talk about in a second, but uh it was somebody that was down in they designated infielder Logan Davidson for assignment. Yeah. Yeah. So, I don’t think especially after the trades the Astros made, there wasn’t really much room for him. So, I’m not really surprised. I don’t even know who Logan Davidson is if I’m being honest. So, yeah. But, so, Eric, this is interesting to come to Texas. Guess what the Yankees all dressed up in to fly to Texas. Guess what they dressed up in? What? Think HLSR. Houston Lifestock show and rodeo. Cowboys. They dressed up in cowboy boots, western pants, hats. So, they’re ready to get a good oldfashioned Texas butt whooping, aren’t they? All righty then. I’m just saying to the Golden Crow. That’s right. the Golden Crowd. I’m just saying I saw that I was like, you know what? Okay, the Yankees are getting in their Texas mode. You know what, boys? Let’s tip the hat to him and let’s kick him in the pants a couple times because Aaron Judge is coming to town. Eric, this guy is having another monster year and he is scary when he gets up to the plate. But I love watching him strike out, especially when he comes to Houston. So hopefully hopefully the Astros see the better of the Yankees. You know, um the Yankees have been through one of those seasons where they are really they’re I mean they’re not really they are they’re literally 76 and 61. So they’re right there neck andneck with with the Astros. So, if the Astros, for whatever reason, relinquish their place at the top um of the ALO West, the Yankees would be that team that would Well, they would have to pass the Blue Jays. Okay, Mr. Negative. No, no, I’m just saying. So, you want to keep the Yankees behind you. You want to keep the Yankees losing. They are seven and three in their last 10. Um, they do have the best run differential though in the American League with 134 plus run differential. So, they have the ability to hit. You got to keep them off the boards. You got to counter with really solid bats. And hopefully the Astros just show up to play more like they did today when New York comes to town. Well, I’m gonna with 24 games left, I’m gonna go and put it out there. I’m going to quote a great well I don’t know if he was great but Bud Celic these games matter like talking about Allstar game. So yeah, this is um this is a big series uh especially with the fact that you want to uh you want to hold on to the wild card like situation just in case there’s a chance like if you get pushed out like right now if Hold on. You don’t want to hold on to the wild card. Well, you want to make sure you stay ahead of the uh you want to make sure you stay ahead of the Yankees, the Red Sox, and the Mariners. That’s what I’m trying to say, right? But you definitely don’t want uh them to get ahead of you. That’s what I’m talking about. Right. You don’t want to lose the series. You don’t want to go down two three. But you that first game, Eric, I mean, these are going to be some doozy um matchups. You got Freed versus Fromber, which I think I think we’ve done decent against Freed. Um Warren versus Alexander um in game two. I love Jason Alexander. And Rodon versus Javier. And Javier, Eric, Javier had a no hitter. Yeah. Last time he pitched going in, you know, we can’t call it that, by the way, because he didn’t complete it. The Astros did not complete it, so they cannot Well, he had six he had six no hit innings. How I know, but if I look up the rule book, I didn’t say he threw a no hitter. I know, but he threw six no hit innings and it was De Los Santos that gave up the two hits. But anyways, the We got breaking news. The Mariners just lost. So, the Astros now have a three-game lead over the Mariners. Love to hear it. Thank you, Seattle, for sputtering and see us not rise. We love it. Um, let’s not talk too much crap yet because it’s still 24 games left. But, yeah, I still lead before we start going King Kong and um, pumping our chest. So, yes, like that. Yes. Uh, so yeah, definitely Farmer Valdez needs to build on what he did last time. He looked really good last time. Jason Alexander, I’m one out away from a a not complete game, but a quality start like he’s been doing. And Christian Javier, like you said, almost no hitter. So, I think the AS the Yankees are facing some of the tougher pitchers for the Astros. uh that’s not even named Hunter Brown. So all of a sudden you have a rotation that teams are gonna fear facing. I mean you don’t have a Max Freed, but Braomemer Valdez is same type of guy. Oh I when he’s on Yeah. Yeah. Braomemer you know I mean Javier obviously shows that he has it. Jason Alexander, he may not woe you with the big, you know, pitching numbers that people point to, but he does the job and he is way more than sufficient. He’s one of their best pitchers of 2025. Yeah. So, if I said, who’s had home runs against Max Freed just without looking, who would you guess? Jose Altuve. Yes, that’s one. Um, I’m going to go with Taylor Tra. No, it’s um one new Astro that they acquired at the trade deadline. Oh, the trade deadline. Oh. Um, Carlos Koreah. No. So, the last one is Jesus Sanchez. Oh, Jesus Sanchez. My bad. I was Okay. Okay. And the other guy is um your your daddy himself, Yon Alvarez. My daddy? Yeah, your daddy. Interesting. I look nothing like my father. By the way, I tried to give that your daddy shirt to my uh stepson to wear to the game the other day and he was like, “No, that’s offensive. I can’t wear that.” I’m like, “It doesn’t mean what you think it means.” No, it does mean what you think it means. That’s why you should wear it. It doesn’t mean that. not offensive or anything like that, but uh yeah, the Astros have a tough matchup. The Yankees uh they are still a good team. They may have been up and down recently, but so have the Astros. So, they’ve just got to go out there and just pretend like the backs are against the wall. Pretend like they’re behind the Mariners and they have to come back. And so, just don’t think that you’re ahead. just go in there and uh pretend like your back’s against the wall and just play some inspired baseball like we saw today. I thought we saw a team that really wanted to win. You saw them stealing five bases. That’s something they haven’t done all year. We saw uh that big home run by Altuve. We saw them uh scoring what in I believe it was one, two, three, four, five, six innings. So in the first uh five out of the first six innings they scored a run and then they exploded for three runs in the eighth inning. So that’s consistent offense. That’s what will this uh lead this team to the promised land. But it’s going to take a lot more consistent offense. Oh yeah. Yeah. They’ve got to be they’ve got to be a lot more consistent on the offensive production. But, you know, it’s a smaller sample size now. And I think you can be motivated by not swinging at crap pitches. Um, taking a few pitches to start, unless you’re Jose Altuve and you can swing at whatever the hell you want because you’re Jose Altuve. Um, and you somehow find success even if you’re scrapping for hits like he did today. So, um, I think the Astros have a successful series versus the Yankees, but I’m not going to make any predictions cuz if they go wrong, I get blamed for it. So, I’m not going to be blamed for another man’s work. Um, I just believe that the Astros, if they take care of business, things will end up in their favor. Yes. So, um, I know the Astros are going to be facing, um, Aaron Judge tomorrow, but from Valdez, one thing you can say about that is he’s never allowed a home run to Aaron Judge. So, uh, we can say that with, um, a positive note. So, uh, guys, thank you for making Locked on Astros podcast your first listen every day. Whether it’s on YouTube, go and subscribe to us. 1. Watched match at gym. Many distractions. Overall, Luis Garcia exceeded expectations and Astros battled. Altuve's blast sealed the WIN. Good relief came.

  2. Luis made some of those guys look bad, getting them to swing at stuff in the dirt. I do not understand the physics of what a batter sees and what he think he sees, but Garcia made it clear he has that pitch in his back pocket when needed.
