Mets vs. Reds Game Highlights (9/7/25) | MLB Highlights

The third time in just over three weeks. The Mets will debut a new starting pitcher in the middle of a pennant race. It’s kind of unprecedented, Nola mclean has had great success. Jong has made two starts and now Brandon Sprout emerges on the scene 10 days shy of his 25th birthday. You look at this matchup and you kind of feel like this is one of those games that the Reds need to win. I’m not talking about from a standing standpoint, I’m talking about from a matchup standpoint. You have one guy making his big league debut. You have another guy that’s a big leaguer at this point and when he’s on, he’s one of the best pitchers in the game in hunter Green and swing and a miss, he struck him out down on strikes, Francisco Lior and Green strikes out the first batter he faces here one man out and now juan Soto Greens 02 pitch swing and a miss. He blew it by him at 11 up in the zone. Back to back strikeouts for hunter Green. Now, soto two gone, that’s just straight overpowering right there. 12 pitch strike three called, got him with a fastball. Green strikes out the side to open the ball game. Brandon really had two different seasons in AAA rough. First half, a really good second half, really good. Second half limited the walks in the second half. Er, a dropped almost three runs per game as he got himself ready for the start and he walks on four pitches at the start for Sprout Fried gets on base for his 17th straight game 0 to 2 to Marte with De La Cruz on deck and Marte hits one the cut off by Beatty to mcneil and on to first from the double play with a gem taking a base hit away from Marte and starting the 543 , double play can take a deep breath right there a little help from his friends and thank you very much. Pitcher’s best friend bases are clear for De La Cruz batting left 12 coming and gets the curveball over strike three called brandon Sprout has his first major league strikeout and he gets around an opening walk good. First inning for Sprout no score. He made some significant history in the first inning today. Struck out all three Mets that he faced to begin the game nine times in his career. Hunter Green has struck out the first three men. He has faced most by a red starter going back as the records due to 1911 swing and a miss and down on strikes. Brandon Nimmo was striking them all out three straight pitches there to Nimmo to get him a called strike, a swinging strike on a fastball and Then he blows the fastball right on by strike three called. Got him looking fastball at 105 in a row of red ink and nothing but K so far for the Mets against hunter Green. Don’t think I’ve seen someone dominate early in the game like this in a long time strikeout number six for hunter Green in the first seven batters and there’s one. Brett Beatty walks to the plate. First pitch swung on and crushed deep to right field Marte going back, he’ll turn and just watch this one fly into the netting over the Mets bullpen and right. Brett beat, he goes deep against hunter Green his 16th of the season and gives the Mets a one nothing lead in the third inning. He’s got to find some daylight, find a mistake and Beatty gets a hanging slider and Beatty was right on it. Green knew it. So a four pitch walk, second one issued by brandon Sprout. Second time it’s led off an inning and Brian Hayes walks to the plate for the Reds strike three called. He got him looking through a sweeper on the inside corner for his second major league strike out and there’s one away used three different pitches there on Hayes, fastball curveball sweeper. And you could tell Hayes was stepping and guessing there a little bit, a nice job. They were the inside corner. Here’s Matt mclean swinging a miss a nasty curveball by Brandon Sprout. Second consecutive strikeout, third strikeout overall two away. That one was pretty one of his best ones that he’s thrown so far to get swing and miss second time through now for the Reds. Here’s TJ Friedel curveball strike three called, he got him looking three strikeouts in the inning for Brandon Sprout and four strikeouts through the first four innings for the right hander. First time through the order. Hunter did a good job striking out seven greens back home with a 12 pitch and soto takes strike three called fastball over the outside corner, couldn’t pull the trigger green. Struck out eight just a little blue by you right over the outside corner at 100 miles an hour. Here is Starling Marte with a runner at first and two out dribble back to green former shortstop bare hand nice play and the inning is over a walk and a man left for the Mets in the fourth. They lead it one nothing base on ball stolen base and the player are into scoring position and at least you move the runner over and you give Austin Hayes a chance here to drive him home and tie this ball. The Reds could get a sacrifice fly here and score a run without the benefit of the hit. Hayes sends a fly ball short, center field coming on is Mullins catches made. Here comes Marte to the plate, throw home a relay not nearly in time, Marte made it easily. Sac fly for Hayes in this game is tied at one without the benefit of the Sprout. Really, you look at it. He’s thrown 56 pitches. He has struck out four walked three. So he hasn’t given up a hit yet. Tied in the here’s mclean with two outs swing and a miss got him with a sweeper. Brandon Sprout has struck out five in his major league debut. One run allowed over five. He hasn’t given up a hit yet in the top of the sixth inning. There has been only one hit in this game home run in the third inning and otherwise has been absolutely dominant striking out nine and walking only one and SOTO pops it up, left side behind short, he’s out there and under it, he’s got it side retired. That’s go in order again here in the sixth and we go to the bottom of the sixth inning, still tied at 15 and one third innings without allowing a hit. The longest bid by met this season. Art has scored the only run for the Reds and he floats one to right field for the first Cincinnati hit, broke his bat and dumped one to right. And so after Sprout held the Reds without a hit for the first five and one third Noel its a soft single now is struck out looking, he’s grounded out to first base drives to right. That’s down Orte Rod for third W is on from home de La Cruz to third one. Take stars in first lineup. Reds take the lead, double the bag in third base. It’s 21 reds for the man. 90 feet away. Hayes has been a run producer. Ribbies in 42 of his 91 games is a red grounded to third. Cruz scores. Hayes delivers again his second rib eye of the day. It’s 31, Cincinnati. So Sprout, after not allowing a hit for the first five and a third has given up three straight hits and Reid Garrett just activated off the injured list. Today is up in the bullpen now with two outs that will bring up Sal Stewart 3 to 1 reds got him looking at the knees strike out for a Sprout on the fastball seven strikeout of the day and that ends the inning after six, very nice innings just like Jonah yesterday gave up three hits in six innings. I love what I saw from him today. So a leadoff walk to Pete Alonzo that will bring Brendan NMO to the play, struck him out the heater at a double digit, Ks for Green, take your medicine. Third time this year, 12th time on his career that he has struck out double digit struck and that’s just a flat blue by you right over the inside corner, top of the strike zone and see you later. Now mcneil who had not struck out in 31 straight plate appearances until Green got him in the fifth, struck him out a dirty dozen for Green. He ties his season high. He goes off to an ovation. Soto has taken an 0 to 3 today after reaching base safely in 15 straight games. So that’s on the line as he tries to get a board for Alonso and get Pete up. There is the tying run and SOTO cracks one to deep right center. That ball is going to go out of here. Juan Soto with his 38th home run of the year gets the Mets with a run, 38 home runs, 93 runs batted in and now it’s 3 to 2. Cincinnati can’t imagine how many home runs he hit if he played here. The Mets now have two hits, a home run by Beatty, a home run by Soto, homered Alonso, reaching on the air by de La Cruz and now the pinch runner at second with Nimmo at first good speed on the bases with Marte coming to bat. This is the Mets first at bat with a runner in scoring position today. A ground ball to Elliot. Let’s get a double play. That would be great. A feel good moment for everybody home swinging a broken bat one hopper up the middle. Ellie scoops to mclean one that’s what I’m talking about. The Reds have won it 3 to 2 over the Mets and have taken this series two games to one. That’s exactly what the Reds needed. A feel good moment. You hit the ball to David Cruz, especially after making the error early and the Reds are able to turn that double play over.

  1. Being a Reds fan is frustrating. They have basically choked away a chance at the playoffs. Went from 7 games over .500 to .500. Now just a slim chance. It won't happen. They do this every year. Just look at this game, you let some goofy looking kid with a big nose and llama hair debut and look like a seasoned pro against you. Striking guys out as they keep panning back to his family cheering him on. He should have been lit up, but no. Hunter Greene is legit and has another legendary performance, almost squandered by the fat relief pitcher because the Reds have no bullpen. A win is a win but still. Typical Reds. You have a few really good starting pitchers but no bullpen. You have some tremendous fielders and some good athletes, but no really consistent bats. Elly is the most unique specimen ever with his size, speed, and athleticism. He is a problem anytime he gets on base…but that is when he isn't swinging at balls 10 feet out of the strike zone or staring at balls as they go right down the middle. He is either the best short stop in baseball or a complete liability. I think we should all just face it, the Reds will never be great again. Call me negative, call me whatever you want. I hope I am wrong, but the formula seems pretty set at this point.

  2. Great pitching by Hunter. Great to see Elly reach down and hit that ball (after all the nay-sayers saying he won't swing) to score Marte. And that was a classy double-play to end it. Go Reds!

  3. 2 weeks ago, they had an 8-1 early lead on the brewers and absolutely blew it. Next night they blew a 2-1 8th inning lead and lost. This series they had a bases loaded 9th inning with no one out and couldn't score. A playoff contender doesn't do this, and if they didn't, the reds would be the wild card leader and on a roll filled with confidence. They are a do the small things better away from being legit. Just a shame that the opening day stupid can't be a learning experience that isn't repeated
