🔴LIVE 🔴Boston Red Sox VS Oakland Athletics/September 08/ Mlb Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25
And now, please welcome first pitch coming at you right after the break. Athletics just about ready to go. Red Sox coming up to hit against Luis Severino. This guy has stuff. And Singy, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. leading off for the Reds. Well, he’s been a real quality starter for his club. And coming into this one, what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year. It seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone. So, we’ll see how right-handers do against him in this one. And that one is downstairs. And the count is one and one. Thinking about Yoshida, he’s never going to be the biggest player when he’s on the field, but that doesn’t mean he can’t hit. He gets on base and doesn’t strike out very often. That combo makes you a valuable asset to your club. One, two now. [Applause] Fights it off. You’ll see another. There’s a swing and a drive. That’s back there. That one is gone. The first batter of the game leaves the yard and a Red Sox jump in front. It’s one- nothing. That’s a fun way to take the lead. Just hit one out of the park. Well, you got to love a game that brings some action from the jump. And at the plate, he was looking for a pitch to absolutely drive. And you know, leadoff hitters aren’t up there anymore just working the count, trying to get on. They’re looking to make some noise and do some damage. Now it’s Alex Bregman in there for strike one. Bregman in his ninth season, batting second in today’s lineup. A former first round pick back in 2015. Red Sox already leading. And a base hit to left field. That’ll play. all over that one right there. Just a solid swing right there. Caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit. Those always feel great. So, a man at first and now Jiren Durant. He’s someone that really beats up on right-handed pitching. The lefties, however, give him a little bit more trouble. Part of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. Next pitch is outside. Nobody out. Runner at first. And that’s outside. Last couple of pitches. Breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. And now two and two. Grounded to third. Could be two to second. That’s one on to first in time. double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. Trevor Story comes up to the plate. First pitch misses. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Two outs. Base is empty. Line drive and this might be trouble. makes the turn and heads for second. And that’s a double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Fast ball off the plate a little bit, but a really nice job of going with it. Punched it to the opposite field for that knock. Nathaniel Low up to hit lined and that’s a base hit. Story on his way home. He’ll score and it’s an RBI single and they take a two-run lead. Well, clearly he was ready to hit right there. I could watch base hits like that one all day long and so could every hitting coach in the league. Just a nice line drive into center field. So up next, Rob refer. And that’s way high and it’s one and0. He’s given up a couple of runs, but the pitch count really not as high as you would think. Might be able to get through this one under 25 pitches. that one the other way. Tracks it down for the out and that’ll do it. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. Bottom half of inning number one coming up. It’s the Red Sox two and the Athletics coming to bat. Back here with my pal Singi. And on the mound in this one, Brian Beao. And Singi, it’s unique these days, but he’s more of a pitch to contact type of guy. Yeah, Boogie. He doesn’t rely too heavily on the strike out. He knows he needs to miss barrels, get some soft contact, let the defense do work behind him. And I think a guy like that that can keep a good tempo, don’t give hitters time to adjust or think, they can move through a ball game. And you look up, they’re in line for a quality start. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. right through there for a strike. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shut down inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Couldn’t hit the fast ball at the knees. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly he had him fooled. Now here is Brent Rooker. That one not close. Ball one. Strike one. One ball. One strike. Come on Brent. One down, base is empty. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, there appears to be no problem settling in on the mound out there today. It looks pretty tough to start this one, punching out the first two hitters of this ball game. And somebody’s going to have to put the bat on the ball, put it in play, and get something going. Number 32 stands in now. Looks at that one inside. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. First two hitters get punched out on strikes. Take some notes from the dugout. When you get your chance, go up there and hit the ball hard somewhere. One ball, two strikes. swinging a ground ball. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and no one left. We go on to inning number two. It’s the Red Sox two and the A’s nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And stepping in is the speedy David Hamilton. Severino back to work. That one finds the zone. 0 and one and there’s a ball. Mike Filillmore, our played umpire, very consistent with his zone. Chris, gets a lot of praise for that. He does, Boo. And I think that with any umpire, you really just want them to be consistent. Filillmore’s a guy that does a good job back there in that way. So, people around the league really appreciate his consistency. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Fouls one off. Two and two. That one missed. Fly ball pretty well struck right field. Ranging back towards the wall. out of here. He circles the bases. Home run number five on the season. And they tack one on the board. It’s 3 nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. And now Son Raphaela [Applause] in the air. right field pretty well struck going back. Holds it in on the warning trap. Knight catcher Conor Wong and stepping in for Boston. Connor Wong. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. What about a playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. Masataka Yoshida up next for the Red Sox. He’s already homered here in this one. And that’s in there for strike one. Two down, base is empty, but one run across here in the top of the second. There’s the strike. line drive down to the dirt. Swing and a miss. MacGyver down to first with it. That completes the strike out and that’ll do it. Boston with another on the solo blast. It’s now 3 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Bottom of the inning now the left fielder Tyler Soderstroke Chris has been a good year for him having already set a new career high for RBI’s in a season and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. A three-0 lead is great, but you can’t get too comfortable. Got to stay aggressive, keep attacking hitters, try to cruise through this ball game. the other way. Makes the catch. Going up, one down. Batt up for the A’s, Jacob Wilson. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers, but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Check swing and he went and that strike one. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits right through there for a strike. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. Already two out here in the home half of inning number two. Off to a strong start, Singy as he’s punched out three of the first five he’s faced. Well, he’s definitely minimizing contact. He can get the swing and miss when he needs it, but he’ll also keep the defense fresh behind him, allowing some balls in play as well. Two outs, space is empty. Here’s the second baseman, Zack Gellof. That one finds the corner. And it’s 0 and one. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. That’s a strike and it’s 0 and two. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer Oh, that’s a strikeout. And that’ll do it for the inning. So, they make short work of them there. We head on now to the top of the third. It’s the Red Sox three and the A’s nothing. And we’re back onto the third inning. Here’s the third baseman, Alex Bregman. Nowadays, with advanced metrics and increased use of moving the infielders around, defense isn’t necessarily about making errors. Are you able to get to the ball? Are you able to position fielders where hitters hit the ball, but within the new shift rules? And an area that goes unnoticed is the coach that’s responsible for positioning. and then uh the research person that’s providing the information. So, what we’re seeing in baseball, so many more people behind the scenes that are contributing to the success between the lines. Now batting leftielder Jiren Durant. Now batting Jiren Durant. He’s 0 for one. If there’s nobody on in front of him, you know, a single for him many times is a double. This guy is off to the races, ready to steal a bag when he’s on first base. and a foul ball. Back when you played, it wasn’t the empirical data we have now. It was a guy with a ruler and a diamond taking a colored pencil and drawing a line where he thought someone had hit the ball. Right. That or just going off of gut or feel. What does it look like his swing is today? What’s the pitcher throwing? They are sticking to the metrics and what seems to be most consistent for that hitter regardless of who the pitcher is on the mound. Short stop. Two down, base is empty. Here’s Trevor Story now. A double and a run. Scored his first time up. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond. And this guy is at the top of the list. There’s a strike. Yeah, we go beyond just, you know, fielding percentage and, you know, what it looks like, but the ability to have a range and, you know, close holes that, you know, are normally there against an average defender. But this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness outside. Going to count one and two and the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise you can struggle you can lose your mechanics but the thing that you can do the throw to first and it’s a one two3 inning. Nothing across here this half. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the Red Sox three and the A’s nothing as we go to the last of the third. And now the center fielder Lawrence Butler Butler and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter up the middle. slides for the stop to first and that’s a great play for the out. We saw a few skills on display there for the out. Technique was great, reaction time was there and the slide was smooth. Watching that play come together was really fun. Next up for the A’s, Brett Harris delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. One out. Base is empty. And that one fouled off. That’s way outside. And that is ball one. swings through it and that’s a strike out. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide and what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. And that’s what leads to the strikeout. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Two outs. on the ground to the left and foul ball. Swing and a chopper out to short to first. Three up, three down. Inning over. Nothing doing there for the A’s. Still down three nothing. All set for the start of the unit. Here’s Nathaniel Low. Nathaniel Low. Low measures 6′ 4 in 220 lb. And they went out and made a trade for him last season. And a foul ball. He’s a bad ball hitter. So even if you get him to chase pitches outside the zone, he still might beat you. Not an easy out by any means. That one fouled off. Might want to start that load a little bit sooner because of the good vlopped up Wilson and puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s one down now. Batting rightielder Rob Snider. So digging in, Rob Reider 0 for one so far. Swinging a foul out of play. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. Just couldn’t catch up. Oh, one down. swaying at a ball popped up. Wilson [Applause] makes the grab and there’s two gone. Now batting second base David Hamilton. Two outs. Base is empty. Here’s a speed threat. David Hamilton. He’s already homered in this game. Let’s go, baby. Let’s go. Inside. Just missed. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. That’s off the inside corner. And now two and 0. Ripped but a curls. Foul. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. And that’s outside. And that’s ball three. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. And it’s fouled away. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up in the air left field down the line and that’s a foul ball. So all filled up. Severino. That’s ball four. Tried another sinker but couldn’t find a zone. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. And that one is lifted in the air. And that is that. [Applause] And the Red Sox leave one, but they lead it three nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the first baseman, Nick Curts. Number 16. [Music] Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. And the leadoff man aboard. He was all over that one. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say charge it crazy. And now the DH Brent Rooker and the first offering is not close. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit. And hardly order coming up right behind them. This is where they need to get going. There’s the strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. And now two and one. Fought off. Foul. Ruer at first with no outs here. Let’s go to Br Outside low. Three and two now. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. And ball four, two aboard. Well, we’ve seen this recipe cook up a big inning plenty of times. Two runners on, nobody out. and they’re in the heart of their order. It’s just a great opportunity to put up a crooked number. Number 32 batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. Curts on second. Rooker on at first with nobody out. Fouled off down the right side. and one and two. Started after the one-two pitch. Appeal to first. He went around, says Rusty Valentine. Now batting left. Next up for the A’s, Tyler Soderstrom. So clutch. You could argue that he’s been this team’s MVP this year. And that’s in for a strike. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. And that one hammered back there. Say goodbye to that one. He shoots one out to right and it ties it up. It’s 33. This game is breathing new life thanks to that home run and that’s exactly what they needed. [Applause] He’s so good at getting his arms extended and that’s exactly what he did right there. You don’t typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate, but he doesn’t allow his wrist to roll over. Stays through the ball, gets the loft, and gets the home run. And here is Jacob Wilson. He’s 0 for one. That’s a strike attacked with the sweeper. Still only one out here in the inning. Swing and a miss. That’s the sweeper. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. And that one lifted in the air. Center field. Raphaela snags it for the second out. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. Now at the plate, Zack Gellof 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. And first offering is fouled off. Two gone. Base is empty. But three runs across. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. on the ground right side and it goes just foul. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Make it seven strikeouts for him. But the biggest swing of the inning comes right here. A three-run homer. We’re tied now at three apiece. And we’re back. Top five, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And leading it off, Connor Wong. Athletics. Green, baby. Let’s go. Severino back to work. Swing and a miss as he was late that time. And that one fouled off and down on strikes he goes. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Well, he went up there trying to be aggressive, that’s for sure. hacking at those first two pitches, but clearly that last one fooled him. He could have been sitting on something else entirely. But you want to be able to adjust on 0 and two and at least get a swing off when it’s in the zone. Maybe choke up, maybe spread out your stance a little bit. You got to give the guy credit on the mound though. He went right after him. Now it’s going to be Masataka Yoshida. pitch misses there. Two and O. He’s controlling things out there on the mound. Not messing around at all. He’s been in attack mode since the very start. That one misses. And that’s ball three. That’s in there. Swing and a line drive. That’s a base hit into right field. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. Go ahead run on base. Here’s Alex Bregman. There’s the strike. Overrated. comes up empty. That’s strike two. Yoshida, the base runner at first with one out. Swing and a miss. And he’s down on strikes. And that’s six Ks for him in this one. Typically that high fast ball, if it’s close to the top of the strike zone, a hitter, if he’s prepared for it, can get to it. But that one just had that little jump at the end which indicates there’s a good spin rate on it and it didn’t decrease in velocity as that hitter’s internal clock would expect it to. And that’s why you see the swing and miss. Stepping in, Jiren Durant gets the outside corner with that one. Two gone, but the go-ahead run is at first. And we’re in the top of the fifth. cracks his bat and pops him up. Harris makes the catch and that’ll do it. One left for the Red Sox. Still tied three and three. We head to the bottom of the fifth. Here’s the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. Butler. And the first pitch misses for ball one [Music] right through there for a strike. And that’s off the inside edge. Now two balls in a strike. out to short. Story zips it across and the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth. Up next for the A’s, third base. Brent Harris up next for the A’s struck out swinging his first time. Ball one, no strikes. [Applause] A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Base is empty, one away. Last half of inning number five. Ripped to short. Story sends it over to first and that quickly. Two away. Now batting catcher Willie. Willie Macyver up next for the A’s. Grounded out. His first time up. Let’s go. And that one is inside. That misses the zone. Two and one. a little out front there as he swings through it. Next offering is down low. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. And one, two, three go the A’s. The score remains tied at three. And welcome back to the ballpark top six. Here’s Trevor Story. late with the swing there. Activity in the bullpen. Number 49 getting ready to go. Barnett also throwing hammered. And this one could be extra bases around first heading for two. The throw into second in safely with a leadoff double. Go ahead runs in scoring position. Oh, that’ll make you feel good as a hitter right there. When you connect and it jumps off your bat like that, you’re thinking double at the very least. Put a great swing on it and man, he wasn’t fooled at all. A chance now to take the lead and at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Luis Severino gives way and he’s responsible for the runner on second, so the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Brady Basso on a pitch out of the pen here and they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the lefty hitter coming up. I think it’s a good move. I know. I never liked when opposing teams did that to me. So stepping in for Boston, Nathaniel Low. And the first pitch misses for ball one. As a pitcher, you know, the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed. A base hit is probably going to be a big run, so you really have to execute on the mound. Pickoff throw. Story back in on a dive with the go-ahead run standing at second. And we’re the top half of the sixth. [Applause] And a count one and two. Man at second and a swing and a miss. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strikeout and there’s one away. And next for the Red Sox, Rob Ref Snider 0 for two in this one. In there and it’s 0 and one. Well, at that velocity, if that’s all you’re seeing, 88, you can handle that all day long. That’s what you get in batting practice. But off the velocity of the fast ball, that is a very tough. Now, this is through for a base hit. The run comes in from second and it’s an RBI single. It’s 43. Well, that was an important at bat in this game. So, a great job there stepping up to the challenge. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. And stepping in for Boston. David Hamilton, third baseman playing on the edge of the grass looking for the sack bunt. Runner on the go. Swing and a miss. Throw safe. Come on. and he’s down 02 as he swings through it. Man, he was really tardy on that fast ball. Great job of setting him up by throwing the curve ball. Add some velocity to it on the next pitch. Can’t catch up. Foul ball left side. And he’ll see another one out and a runner at second. Next offering misses and the count is one and two. Really good take especially with two strikes. Stays alive. Ref. Snider leads off second with one gone in the inning. outside. Hit weakly on the ground and that’s just foul. And that’s downstairs and outside. Got him. He didn’t make it easy for him on the mound, but they still get the strike out. Came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put him away. Did a nice job right there. Curve in the dirt. Runner at second. Two down. And there’s a foul ball. Out of line, out towards center. Butler puts it away and that’s the third out. So, one run in the inning on this base hit. It’s now a 43 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. Bottom of the six now. Here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Nick Curts. Number 16. And that’s in there at the knees. Probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Not close with that one. And the count even one and one to the right side over to low and that’s one out as they get the leadoff hitter in the six. Now batting the designated hitter. So now here’s the DH Brent Rooker taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level and a foul ball and that’s downed away. The A’s trailing by a run here in the bottom of the sixth and it is two and one. Rip to third. Tosses to first. Two up, two down. Now batting rightielder. Now it’s the right fielder. Swanging a ball drilled center field. Raphaela under it. Makes the catch and over. Now a right-handed arm out of the bullpen. Justin Sterner. Pretty tight game. So they’re looking for quality pitches out of him right here. Got to do his best to keep the score right where it is. And now it’s the catcher for the Red Sox, Connor Wong, who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Sterner in his rookie season, 28 years old, and he found his way onto the team after being claimed off waiverss. That’s towards center. Butler hauls it in and there’s one away. Now batting the hitter Masataka Yoshida digs in now and that misses one and0 base is empty. One away here in the top half of inning number seven. Fouled off left side. Let’s go. And misses inside. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Fouled off. He was late. fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Swings and miss has struck him out. And now it’s Alex Bregman. One for three. [Applause] First pitch just misses. Right through there for a strike. He must have been looking for something else because he gave up on that pitch a little early. It was right down Main Street. Probably not going to see a better pitch to hit in this at bat outside with a breaking ball. Now a screamer into the outfield. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And that is that. Down in order go the Red Sox, but they hold on to a 4-3 lead. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh, Justin Wilson. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So, this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Well, one-run game. Here’s the left fielder, Tyler Sodro. Sodm and that is cut on and missed. It’s 0 and one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Garrett Whitlock up and loosening in the pen. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track. And now one and two. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. There’s the splitter in the dirt. Swing and a miss. Gets him one away on a drop. Third strike. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this. I mean, you got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. Jacob Wilson the next to hit. First offering and it just misses. looking to get the tying run on base. That’s to third. Throw picked at first. Got him. Good stretch there to make the play. It looks like someone added a little yoga to their daily routine if you ask me. Zack Gellof. Zack Gellof now at the plate. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. In for a strike going one, holding on to a one-run lead here in the bottom of the seventh. That missed by a lot. And one and one. Nope. Inside started after it. Tried to hold up. Now a look to first and he held up. Kicks and deals and the tying run is on base. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Butler in now takes ball one off the plate. Well, in this situation, the hitter knows that he’s got to find a pitch that he can drive in order to drive in that tying run all the way from first base. So if he can’t do that, keep the line moving through a walk or just a base hit, but you got to stay within yourself. Six straight outside the strike zone. Chris, with that distraction and the speedy guy at first, he’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. Brett Harris in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] So now two on and two outs. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. Manager out of the dugout now and he’ll make a move to dip into the Red Sox bullpen. Justin Wilson won’t go any further and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Garrett Whitlock taking over on the mound. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. So, the tying run in scoring position now. Harris getting ready to hit right through there for a strike. Big spot. Two out. Both the tying and go-ahead runs are aboard. Hit on the ground to the right side. Come on. in plenty of time to first inning over on the ground out. Took just two pitches to finish the frame out of the bullpen. So a strong showing there from the Boston bullpen. We look ahead to inning number eight. The Red Sox four and the A’s three. And we’re back. We go to the eighth now. The left fielder Jiren Durant. Bring him home. Sterner back to work and a foul ball. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Going to count one and two. [Music] Swing and a miss. Got him to go up the ladder for the K. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh of relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance, get him out of there, and deal with the next guy. Here’s Story now. And that misses. And that’s ball one. check. Swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. One down. Base is empty. way out front for strike two. A short stop takes a ball that misses the zone and it’s three and two. to go, baby. Let’s go. Fly ball down the line. Tries to make the play, but it’s fouled. Swang belted. That one’s carrying. and forget it. He hammers one out to center. His 24th home run of the season. It’s 5-3. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Took on the big part of the yard for that home run and just barely got it over the wall. I thought for a second he brought it back out there, too. He gave it a great effort, but you know those plays are so tough to pull off and I’m sure he’d love to have another shot at it. So, one out, nobody on now. Nathaniel Low that misses the zone and that’s ball one. Ball one. No strike. hard hit left side. Fires in time. Two down, base is empty. Rob Ref Snider will hit next. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Action in the pen down there. Elvis Alvarado getting loose out there. McGuff getting cranked up as well. Yo, one hit hard on the ground to short. Handles, throws to first and that is the inning. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. It’s now 53. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the catcher comes up to him, Willie Macyver. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Come on. That’s a little bit low. Next pitch misses way outside. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. And a 3-1 on the way. And that one off the inside edge. He walked him. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Belly tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot. Hitter didn’t offer at it. Now he has somebody to worry about over at first. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Garrett Whitlock will depart. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. And so the Red Sox go to the bullpen. Garrick Crochet. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year. And that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. And here’s the first baseman, Nick Curts. Now, this team is definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. Try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Tying run at the plate and it’s even up. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a rollover something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Hard hit to third. The throw to second, Adelo. It’s a double play. Hey, they played the matchup right there. Worked out perfectly. Got the ground ball double play and that changes the complexion of this inning entirely. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. Right through there for a strike. Red Sox by two. Ball one there. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Raphaela makes the grab and the inning is over. Elvis Alvarado into the game. He last pitched two days ago. Now it’s the second base, David Hamilton. Second base, David Hamilton. Breaking ball inside and it’s one and0. Movement in the bullpen. Number 58 preparing to come on if needed. Ferguson getting loose as well. And a ground ball to first and he handles it himself for the out. Now batting center Raphael. Next to hit Son Raphaela 0 for three in this one. First pitch misses. Got it started a little too early. Strike one. One ball, one on the ground to third. Throws across the diamond and a couple of quick outs. Now batting catcher Conor Wong. Two outs. Base is empty. Connor Wong up next for the Red Sox. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. in for a strike. Good slider. Red Sox leading it by two. That one off the mark and a count. Two and one. swings and blasts one deep to left center. And that one is off the wall into second and he’s got a double. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. And next is the designated hitter, Masataka Yoshida. That one a little bit high. Ball one. swing and a miss as he was out front. Runner at second. Two down here in the top of the ninth. And that is that. So one hit is all they get. Hard of the order. 345 will get their shot in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Red Sox five and the A’s three. Back now. And on the mound the closer Aldis Chapman. 29 saves on the season. So he’s looking for number 30 right here. He’s been big for him in the back of that bullpen. 345 do up for the home team. And now the right fielder 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Swing and a foul out of play. Now one and one. cut on and missed. 96 of that fast ball. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Fouls it off. Still one and two. A healthy cut. Tough pitch at 98. But a really good pass at the ball. That one not close and the count is even. Two and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Chase the fast ball up the ladder for strike three. Well, that right there is what you want to see out of your closer. Come in and close the door. Cancel any hope that that opponent has in making some type of comeback in the ball game. Tell you what, that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs. And first offering is fouled off. Out to short now. The throw to first on the run on the money. Nice play. Good slider inside right there. Batter fighting to get there. Just rolled over it. Got the ground ball. The Athletics down to their last out. And now Jacob Wilson. He’s kind of an outlier, especially when guys are consciously sacrificing contact to deliver power. And a strike right through there. That one a triple digits. And that one fouled off. This could end it. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. The 02. Got him. And that’s the ball game. He’s done it again, Boog. That’s his 30th save of the year as he puts another game to bed. Sweet dreams, everyone. A 53 final score in this one. Boston picks up a huge win on the road for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami saying so long
