Ryane Clowe Resigns from San Jose Sharks Front Office: What’s Next for the Franchise?

In a surprising turn of events, Ryan Klo has decided to step down from his role as the assistant general manager of the San Jose Sharks after just one season. This announcement made on a Sunday has left many fans and analysts pondering the reasons behind his departure. At 42 years old, Klo did not specify the exact motivations for his resignation. However, he did express in a statement released by the Sharks that this choice was made with his family’s best interests in mind. Recently, I had to make the extremely difficult decision to resign from my position as assistant general manager with the San Jose Sharks. Klo stated, “I truly loved being back in San Jose and working with general manager Mike Greer and his entire team, but at this point, this decision is in the best interest of my family.” Klo also acknowledged the promising future of the franchise, expressing gratitude towards Greer and team president Jonathan Becker for the opportunity to return to the Sharks. The franchise has an exciting future ahead and is set up to be successful for a long period of time, he added, hinting at the potential for the team to thrive in the coming years. This decision comes just over a year after Klo transitioned from his position as a senior adviser to New York Rangers general manager Chris Drury to join Greer, who was once his teammate in San Jose. During his time with the Sharks, Klo was involved in various aspects of the organization, including collaborating with the scouting and development teams, as well as overseeing the hockey operations department alongside Greer and fellow assistant general managers Tom Hol and Joe Will. Reflecting on his previous role with the Rangers, Klo remarked in July 2024, “I was part of a great organization, a great team that just finished making a run in the playoffs. Once I spoke with Mike and we went through it, it was an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down. As of now, it remains uncertain whether the Sharks will seek to fill closed position before the start of training camp, which is just around the corner. The regular season is set to kick off on October 9th at home, adding urgency to the situation. Will, who’s entering his 15th season as an assistant GM for the Sharks and has been the top hockey executive for the Barracuda for 13 years, works closely with Greer on the daily operations of the department. Holi, now in his fourth year as an assistant GM, is responsible for overseeing the analytics department, staff budgeting and contracts. Klo’s journey with the Sharks began when he was drafted in 2001. And over the course of eight years, he became one of the franchise’s most beloved players. During his tenure from 2005 to 2013, he played 423 regular season games, accumulating 271 points and 567 penalty minutes. His playoff performance was equally impressive with 45 points in 68 games, contributing significantly to the team’s advancement to the Western Conference Finals in both 2010 and 2011. In April 2023, Klo was traded to the New York Rangers. And later that year, he signed a 5-year, $24.25 million contract with the New Jersey Devils as an unrestricted free agent. Unfortunately, his playing career was cut short during the 2014-15 season due to concussions. Following his retirement, Klo was given a chance by then Devils President and general manager Lou Lamarella to work within the team’s front office, a role that continued under Ray Sherro, who took over as GM in May 2015. Klo served as an assistant coach on John Hines’s staff with the Devils from 2016 to 2018 before becoming the head coach of the ECHL’s New Finland Growlers. However, he had to resign midway through the 2018 2019 season due to ongoing concussion related issues. In the 2021 2022 season, Klo joined the Rangers as a hockey operations adviser and was later promoted to senior adviser for Drury in August 2023. As we reflect on Klo’s impactful career and his recent resignation, one can’t help but wonder, what does this mean for the Sharks moving forward?
