just about set. Our starter in this one, Max Freed. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way, somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Here’s Glamour Torres. That one finds the zone. And this one is off and running. [Applause] Glabber swings, drives one. Stanton going back. Makes the catch up against the wall. And now the Tigers lineup for manager AJ Hinch. This team can really pile up the runs, Chris. They’re among the top teams in scoring this year. Yeah, and when you can get a lead and be out in front, it really changes what that opposing manager can do with the bullpen. And on top of that, it helps your own pitching staff. It gives them more margin for error. So instead of pitchers squeezing the ball, trying to throw darts and be perfect, they can relax, let the ball come out of their hands, and pitch effectively. So that offense and the ability to score runs also helps the pitching and the defense. One down, base is empty. That one is hammered right field. Judge going back on it. Makes the grab on a leaping play at the wall. Well, that would have been huge if it would have snuck over the glove to take the lead. But great athleticism at the wall. Goes up and brings back a homer. Two down, base is empty. Here’s Riley Green. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. And he takes a strike. Two of the most potent offenses in the game squaring off. Freed 31 years old, a former first round pick back in 2012. Two outs. Fouls one off out of play. Back to our left. Next pitch is outside. Maximus and downstairs. He’s trying to stay down in the zone, but the hitter just will not chase. Now back in a two- two count. He’s going to have to go to something else to get him out. spoils that one and it remains two and two. That’s inside. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with the fast ball. slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Foul ball and it remains a full count. Two down to fights it off. He’ll see another fouled off again and it remains three and two and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another having such a tough time putting him away. Six foul balls in a row. Man, what a battle. The 3-2 is outside and it’s ball four. It wasn’t easy, but he earned that walk after a long at bat. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. Here comes Torque to the plate. Pitch misses and that’s ball one. Green off of first with two away. That one off the mark and the count is 2 and 0. He swings and fouls one off that one. Fouled off. Two and two. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. throw stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Wel Perez getting ready to hit. A switch hitter batting right. Swinging a foul straight back kicks and deals on the ground to Jazz. Jazz tosses the first and that is the inning. Tigers nothing. Yankees coming up. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back in New York and on the mound now, Charlie Morton. Chris, it’s a little more common these days, but still he’s a strikeout per inning type of guy. Well, I hear you about the strikeouts. a lot more guys striking out today. But when you consider having the ability to get that strike out, particularly when you need it, a man on third, less than two outs, situations where, yeah, maybe you’re not a real high strikeout guy, but just knowing you have the swing and miss stuff in a big spot, I think it’s real critical. And he’s got it. Trent Gisham leading things off and takes a strike. Gisham, first round pick of the Brewers in 2015. And that one almost got him. And that one hammered. That’s back there into the bullpen and gone. So he blasts one out the other way. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that and probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. And now big number 99 Aaron Judge. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Always exciting to see a laid-off home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Judge waits. And Judge spoils that one. The real threats are coming up. Already giving up a home run in this inning. He’s going to really have to bear down. hit hard on the ground to short. Throw on to Torqulson Judge out on the play as we take a look now at the New York Yankees lineup. It features a great veteran presence, Cody Bellinger. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Cody Bellinger stands in here. Tried to hold back his swing there but went around. That one finds the zone. No balls, two strikes. Oh, this guy’s so comfortable hitting with two strikes. Even a good pitch early in the at bat, if he’s not ready to pull the trigger, he’s not worried if he gets to an 02 count. One out, base is empty. Swing and a highf fly ball to left and it looks like trouble around first and hustling for second. And that’s a double. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. I don’t know how he was able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Now, here’s the Yankees cleanup hitter, Ben Rice. And that one just misses a ball and no strikes. They had a foul ball. close but called a ball and that’s ball two inside and it hit him. Here’s Stanton now. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So, they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. That one close rule to ball. And that’s ball one. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Bellinger at second. Rice at first. One gone. [Applause] [Applause] and a swing and a miss. Now two out. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide and what happens is because of the pressure you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that’s what leads to the strikeout. Jazz Chisum Jr. Now pitch is in there and one. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. Next offering is fouled back. [Applause] That one just misses. Really good take, especially with two strikes. That one almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. Well, they’re really running up the pitch count in this first inning. Lots of confidence from this team that is perhaps the hottest in baseball right now. Inside, three balls, two strikes. Austin Wells on deck for the Yankees. [Applause] Fouls it back with two strikes. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Ninth pitch of the at bat. do next. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still able to fire over. That ends the inning and they limit the damage, but they’re off to a good start as they pick up a run on this solo shot. It’s an early one- nothing lead. back here in New York. And now the DH Colt hitter Colt Keith Max Freed will go to work. This one chopped up the middle. Jazz tosses to first and quickly one away in the second. Batting seven third baseman Zack Mckinstry. And next up for the Tigers, Zack McKinstry. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. In there at the knees, strike one. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better to the right side. Chisum whips it to first. Two up, two down in the top of the second. That’s what a good sinker is designed to do. Get a guy to roll over a little bit, hit the ball on the ground, kill some worms while you’re at it. So up next, Jake Rogers. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. Just missed. Two out space is empty. Next offering in there for a strike and a count one and one. Little bit low. outside with a breaking ball. And there’s ball four. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. So, digging in, Parker Meadows. Yeah, that’s fouled off. When you’re taking your lead over there at first, you got to be very careful. This guy on the mountain’s got a good pickoff move. Tying run is at first here at the top of the second. Right through there for a strike. Caught him. looking for the K. So, no runs, no hits, no errors, and one left. We go to the bottom of inning number two. Yankees won and the Tigers nothing. Back now in the Bronx. And here’s the catcher, Austin Wells. Chris, it’s been a good year for him, having already set a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. Morton back to work. Swinging a miss. It’s 0 and one. I think he was sitting off speed there. Good fast ball there. I think it was a purpose pitch. You just want to make that hitter’s feet uncomfortable and that location will definitely do it. Line drive. Meadows makes the grab. One down. Batting Anthony Vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees singing when the year’s over he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. And he swings and misses and it’s nothing at one. One strike. Clyde Washington with home plate duties in this one. Little bit of a low zone boo from Clyde. Nothing crazy though. Pitchers that work consistently down around the knees and are able to command their off speed stuff tend to have some pretty good success with him back there behind the plate. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Two down. Just blown away in that at bat. Three fast balls, all strikes. He wasn’t even able to foul one off. There’s not much you can take away from an at bat like that as a hitter other than maybe there’s something wrong with your eyes. Got to have better timing on the fast ball next time. Come on, let’s go. Oh, look at the stop, the throw, and very nicely done for the out. Oh, that’s cat-like reflexes over there at the hot corner. Nice job of making that play and ending the inning. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here is Glabber Torres Torres. And here comes Oh, he doesn’t get the call. One and0. And that’s a pitch early in this game. He needs called for a strike. Struggling with command issues. He’s got to get a little help from the umpire. Fought off foul. The one-1 is fouled off. Backed off the plate that time. And that one in the air center field. Gisham trying to get there. reaching for it and brings it in. Gotta love the over the shoulder catch. I tell you what, those are really fun to make. Carrie Carpenter digs in now. He’s over for one. And there’s a foul ball. and Freed gets his second strike out of the game. Well, take a look at the three pitch sequence here. Pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate. Once you’re ahead 02 as a pitcher, you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect and battle. And right there, clearly he was in swing mode, but all you can do is hope to foul that off. And up next for Detroit, Riley Green. That’s in there. And it’s 0 and one. And that one cutting but missing down low. Fights that one away. Still one and two. [Music] Come on, York. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Tigers are shut down there. They still trail one- nothing. Back for more from the Bronx. Now here’s Trent Gisham taking high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Just missed. Rush from a guy that understands the strike zone. and that’s through there for a strike. One and two and that skips in the dirt. stays alive right through there. Got him. That K is his third of the game. Here comes Aaron Judge. Grounded out his first time. He’s a guy who does it all with the lack of contact in today’s game. This guy hits for contact so he delivers average but there’s on base and slugging too in there at the knees. Strike one early in the count. You have to be real careful because of that power. But then if this hitter gets a strike or two on him, he’s still very comfortable because he has the ability to get the barrel to the baseball. He’s a threat deep into the count as well. strike three and that’s two in a row. Tasked with one, two, and three to start this inning, but no trouble so far. I’m sure he’d love to strike out the side here. Make a little statement, but you got to be composed in this spot. Focus on getting this next guy. You got two good outs. want to get the third one and avoid the middle of that lineup coming up with a base runner. It could become dangerous. Swing and this one’s bounced on the ground. Rogers to first and the Yanks go quietly. One, two, three go the Yankees, but they’re on top one- nothing. Back at Yankee Stadium. New inning getting started. And now the first baseman, Spencer Torqulson. And that one is downstairs. Ball one. Well, these Tigers, as this game goes on, have to be more disciplined at the plate. They’re chasing a lot of pitches outside the zone and those chases are turning into a bunch of outs. Can they turn that around and stay within the zone? We’ll see. But I think they have to next offering way upstairs. That one ripped and it’s off the foul pole for a home run. That’ll fire up the dugout and we are starting over. It’s 1-1. [Applause] Well, he really crushed that thing down the line and everyone had to hold their breath until it clanked off the pole. And every time that happens, it just kind of feels like a trick shot or something. But really, it’s just a stroke of luck that it stays fair long enough. Now, here is Wel Perez. He’s pitching well, but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes. Usually doesn’t work out for success, but you can never predict baseball. Oh, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run, go back to work, focus on this next batter. Next pitch downstairs. Yeah, the count one and two. 02 count. You got the opportunity to expand the zone. Could get the chase there. Let’s see what he comes back with next. Next offering down low and in the dirt. Well, he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here too, too. He’s already seen the curveball a couple of times in this at bat, so might have it timed up and ready for it. There’s a swing and a drive back there. Hops over the wall and that’s an automatic double. That ball exploded off his bat and off the warning track as well as it bounced over the fence and it sounded really good, too. He just put together a really nice swing and just missed a home run. Go ahead run on base. Keith now at the plate. Grounded out his first time up. Outside low and that is ball one. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. Top half of inning number four. That one’s in there and the count even one and one. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. Next offering is in for a strike [Applause] just off the outside part of the plate. Got him swinging. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Zack McKinstry the next to hit. Rolled out to second in his first at bat. Swinging a bouncer out to short. Vulpi throws it to first in time. Two gone now. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Now, here’s the Detroit catcher, Jake Rogers. Walked his first time. In for a strike 0 and one. Two outs and one at scoring position. Next offering is fouled back now at 02 from Free. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball and misses inside. That one missed. That one not close. Counts full. Three and two. Parker Meadows in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. Three balls, two strikes to count. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Judge under this one. He’s got it. And that’ll do it. But we’re all tied up thanks to this solo homer. All even now at 1-1. bottom of the fourth and now it’s going to be Ben Rice Rice. And there’s the strike. You know, these Yankees doing a great job, Boo, of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way. And I’m seeing very patient at bats out of them. He’s only given up one run, but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there. And that might be the best news yet for this offense. Next offering is fouled back. You know, sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage. And that might be the case today. That one back up the middle and it gets through and they have their first base runner since the first inning. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. You got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. John Carlos Stanton at the plate. That one inside. Look out. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. Right through there for a strike with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. Jazz Chisum Jr. stepping in now for the Yankees. Grounded out his first time up. definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. And the first pitch misses for ball one. And that drops in for a strike. [Music] misses the zone and he gets him to chase. fights it off. He’ll see another Jazz goes down on strikes. Well, interesting. He’s looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the leadoff single. Backto back strikeouts. So, they haven’t been able to move that runner up, get him into scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring. I tell you, good job so far on the mound. He just needs one more out. And now Austin Wells, he’s 0 for one. This guy one of the best defensive catchers going. You talk about framing, the ability to block, catch, and throw. He is at the top of the game. Really good athlete. And many times we talk about, you know, the feet of infielders. this catcher as well. Really quick feet. He’s able to recognize the pitch, see the trajectory, and get into a spot where he can block those balls and keep them from going to the back stop. Really impressive with the way he frames, the way that he sets it up because sometimes those pitches are off the plate, but because he sets up and presents it so well, he steals strikes for his pitcher. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Rice the runner at first with two gone. And that one wrapped foul. Two outs. Still two and two after the foul ball. [Music] Liner base hit. Throw in holds the lead. Runner at second. Two on now with Jul. Got to love the resiliency he showed in that at bat. Battling with two strikes. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field. And it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. First and second, two outs. Anthony Vulpi getting ready to hit. And that one upstairs. First and second, two down and another ball. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. That one finds the zone and it’s two and one. Squirts away a little bit. Well done behind the dish. First and second, two down. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth and that is out of play. in the air out towards right center. Perez sizing this one up. Brings it in. And that is the third out of the inning. Yanks strand a pair. Still tied 1-1. All set for the start of the inning. And stepping in is the speedy Parker Meadows. Free back to work. Hit in the air. Center field. Gisham settles underneath it. Makes the grab and there’s one down. Up next for the Tigers. Glabber Torres up to the plate. Bowl for two in this one. Yankees. Foul ball there. One down. Base is empty. That’s down and in. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. On the ground and it goes just foul. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. struck him out looking. Absolutely dotted the edge of the zone right there. That was a tough battle, man. So to make a really quality pitch and just catch him looking like that, it’s got to feel good out there on the mound. That was a fun at bat to watch. And next to hit for Detroit, Carrie Carpenter struck out on just three pitches last time. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Two down. Nobody on. That’s a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. They had a swing and a miss there. cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. Nothing across here this half. Home half of the fifth coming up. All tied 1-1 here at New Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. John Shabi with my buddy Chris Singleton. It’s set to get us started. Bottom five, Ryan McMahon. York just missed. You know, these Yankees just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for them to make contact at times, and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball two. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. So the batter now will be Trent Gisham. He’s already homered in this game and takes low for ball one. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. and fouled off. Fast ball is outside. Right through there for a strike. battling here as he fouls it away. Now it bounces away. Can’t squeeze it. And now a man into scoring position. Had some real trouble with the pitch there. That’s one he should have had. And that essentially turns that leadoff single into a leadoff double. Takes away any chance of neutralizing it with a double play ball. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. And that’s a foul ball. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. really think the outer half is open. Good job to fight that one off. So critical to keep an eye on the pitch count this time of the year. Guys can start to run on fumes a little bit. Mechanics can drop off and we know they need him to be fresh and ready for big innings in October. And a 3-2 on the ground to the left and it’s just fouled. That was close. He fouls it off. will do it again. Well, you can’t really adjust your game plan for that last pitch. Guy hasn’t thrown it very much. You got to focus on the stuff that he’s throwing up there most of the time. And ball four, two aboard. He’s making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound, but you know, his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this, but he’s going to have to buckle down right here. Here comes the skipper, and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. That’s all for Charlie Morton, and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. back with a new arm after a quick break. New pitcher for the Tigers, Chris Paddock. Still pretty early in the ball game. So, this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. First and second, no outs. Here is Aaron Judge. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. [Applause] And Judge spoils that one. First and second here. No outs. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. They’re waving McMahon home. The throw in. It’s offline and he scores. It’s 2-1. Well, there you go. The RBI machine. Another clutch runscoring at bat. Yeah, he’s been so good in these situations. Call it clutch if you want, but his resume speaks for itself. And here comes Bellinger. One for two. That’s off the inside corner. And that’s ball one. He’s got an MVP and a rookie of the year under his belt. and a guy who’s played every day as a first baseman, every day as a right fielder, every day as a center fielder. The one and a breaking ball drops in for a strike. [Applause] The 1-1 is fouled off. First and second, no outs. Last half of inning number five on the ground. Two ball and he can’t come up with it. No throw. Save at first. And we’ll see if it’s an error. First baseman. Ben Rice. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Ben Rice. Golden opportunity right here. check swing and he held up. Well, this is a tough situation with the bases loaded, but the healthiest mindset is just try to get outs one hitter at a time. And that one fouled off. They need a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a popup, something, but you got to make some pitches. But if he can battle and get through this, he can earn some points. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Huge strike out there. He’s really good hitting the baseball the other way. So, credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch. Clearly, he had him fooled. John Carlos Stanton to the plate now who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. That one is absolutely belted. That’s down. One hops off the wall heading for the plate. The throw to second is offline. He’s safe and they clear the bases. Well, that may end up being an at bat we go back to later on when this game is over. Put a really nice balanced swing on it and when you can rope one into the gap like that, you’re thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of the box and he’ll feel real good about that one. And stepping in for the Yankees, Jazz Chisum Jr. [Applause] first offering misses badly for ball one singing four homers in 22 games at Old Yankee Stadium. What do you remember? Well, I remember my rookie year hitting two in one game. And you know, before that game in the clubhouse, there was a gentleman there who owned a suit company there in downtown Manhattan. And he said to me, “Hey kid, you hit a home run in the game tonight. Come over to the store tomorrow and I’ll give you a free suit. Next offering is in for a strike. So I went in the game, I happened to hit two. When I walked into the store the next day and he looked at me, he said, “You’re trying to put me out of business, aren’t you?” And that was a great great experience that I had as a rookie playing against the Yankees, playing in New York. So did Super Joe give you two suits? Super Joe hooked me up with two suits. Swing and a miss. And that’s strikeout number 100 on the year. And next for New York, Austin Wells. Austin Wells. York and first offering is fouled off. tried to hold up on the 02. Now a look down to third and Ed Drummond right on it. Says he held up. Man at second and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. swings and miss has struck him out. But four score in the inning, three of them on this bases clearing double. It’s now 51. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back in the Bronx, leading off, Riley Green. Well, a big lead like this is comfortable many times, but not when these two teams are matching up. You got to continue to keep your head down, play catch with that catcher, and just try to move through this lineup. just missed. Movement in the Yankees pen. Ryan Yarro getting loose out there for Aaron Boon. Dval the right-hander also getting loose and the next pitch is way outside. For you growing up in New York City, I mean, you’re a big sports fan. Tell me about your experience with the Yankees growing up. I really went to Sha Stadium more than I did to Yankee Stadium. I grew up a Phillies fan. There was one game though that I went to as a kid. I sat in the upper deck. It was the game that Bo Jackson hit three homers in his first three plate appearances and then hurt a shoulder diving for Dion Sanders inside the park home run. That’s probably the most memorable game that I ever attended as a fan at Old Yankee Stadium. Next offering down in the dirt. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Gets under it and pops it up. Vulpi hauls it in for the owl. And there’s one down. Batting Spencer Torlson. And here’s the first baseman, Spencer Torqulson. He’s already homered here in this one. Sliced hard but foul. The Tigers down by four and we’re the top half of the sixth. Swing and he breaks his bat. He’s got it and there’s two away. Now batting rightielder Wel Perez. Two outs. Space is empty. Next to hit Wel Perez. York swing and a base hit. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Now batting the designated hitter, Colt Keith. Colt Keith up now for the Tigers. First pitch misses. Two outs. So, a foul ball makes it one and two in the air. left field down the line and that will drop foul. Started to go to one, two, a check on it to third and he went around. Not an easy call there, but that puts an end to the inning. So, no runs here on a base hit, no errors and one left. 891 scheduled in the bottom of the sixth. It’s the Yankees five and the Tigers won. Well, we go bottom six. And stepping in for the Yankees, Anthony Vulpi. And that one pulled foul. Come on, Yankees. Foul ball. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Fast ball is outside. Ring him up, says Clyde Washington. That’s a strikeout. Ryan McMahon steps to the plate. Third base, Ryan McMahon. Yankees. And that misses. And that’s ball one. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, that’s a good take by him. That misses two and0. Rift to right center. And that should be extra bases around first. Heading for two. In safely, it’s a double and his second hit. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So, no surprise he put a great swing on it. Now it’s Trent Gisham to the plate. There’s the strike. Man at second. Swung on. Belted. Meadows. Long run into the gap. Won’t get to this one in the alley. The run comes in from second and the lead is up to five. Throw is high and over his head. Well done. Drives in the run. Pretty good change up on the outside corner, but he did exactly what you’re supposed to do with that pitch. See it deep and keep your hands inside it to drive it the other way. And here comes the Tigers manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Chris Paddock is done and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So, the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now on the bump, Kaider Montero. And with the big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers in their numbers, but I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. Yeah, the hardthrowing righty trying to secure these outs against a potent Yankee lineup. But it starts with Aaron Judge. There’s the strike at the knees. Well, in terms of hitting rocket home runs, Judge is near the top of that list. Only John Carlos Stanton has hit more with greater exit velocity than Judge. Look out, though. Show is quickly climbing those charts. Judge comes up empty there. York swing and a miss. Struck him out. Bellinger up to hit. One for three. Well, he’s been having a great year this year and hitting home runs at a good clip and the matchup is very favorable. That one finds the zone. Strike one. No need to offer it that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. And ball one. And that finds the mark on the outside corner. One and two. And there’s a ball. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. Swag and a miss. struck him out. Inning over and it could have been worse. Yankees strike for a run on the RBI double and this is now a 61 ball game. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Ryan Yarro. This softball has been really good against left-handed hitters. Now the third baseman, Zack McKinstry has grounded out a couple of times. [Music] These two offenses can put up runs in a hurry. up the middle and it’s through for a hit and the leadoff man aboard. Now batting catcher Jake Rogers. Jake Rogers digs in now. First pitch just misses. Well, the laid-off man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully, the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. [Music] Let’s go. And that one is lifted in the air. Judge is there. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. Now batting the center fielder Parker Meadows. Parker Meadows now at the plate. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. on the ground right side. Boots it now batting second base Torres. First and second, one out. Glabber Torres up now for the Tigers. Strike on the inside corner. Runners at first and second with one gone. Out towards right center. That’s well struck. That’s back there. Out of here. Glabber Torres goes yard. his 16th homer of the year. And they throw three on the board. It’s 6-4. They needed that one, Singy. Indeed they did. They’ve been fighting to get back into this game. And just like that, they’re back in it. It’s not easy to hit a breaking ball on the outside part of the plate for a home run. But I think it caught just too much of that outside part of the plate. Maybe a little bit of a mistake, but he didn’t miss it at the plate. And here comes the Yankees manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Ryan Yarro gives way. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout. And we’ll be back with a new pitcher. New pitcher for the Yankees, Mark Lighter Jr. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. One out, base is empty. Here’s the shortstop at the plate. Carrie Carpenter. The shortstop takes a ball. Lighter. In his fifth season, he features a splitter, a sinker, a curve, a slider, and occasionally uses a cutter. Ground ball to the right side. Awesome play there. That’s a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game. It might not be the most challenging we’ve seen today, but it needed to be made. That’s helping your team. So, two down now. And here is Riley Green. Breaking ball in there for a strike. Close but called a ball and it’s a ball and a strike. Popped up to the left into foul ground. McMahon on the move to the wall and he can’t reach it. Two down. Nobody on and that’s in the dirt. A sliding stop, gathers and throws, and that’s a nice play to end the inning. Detroit making up ground with this homer. It’s a two-run lead now at 64. Back to the Bronx. And now the first baseman, Ben Rice. Ben Rice. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. And another ball. Next offering is fouled back. And that’s in for a strike. And that one almost hit him. That one misses. So, a leadoff walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. So, a man at first. Now, here’s John Carlos Stanton. Yankees. Slice to right. Base hit. Throw into third and the throw’s offline. Safe at third. Now batting second base. So runners at the corners. Nobody out. Jazz Chisum Jr. stepping in now for the Yankees. 0 for three in this one. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. Now one and one in the infield at the corners. Don’t be surprised to see them come home first and prevent that run from scoring. swaying at a ball popped in the air. That’s a base hit as a run scores. Picks himself up an RBI. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. just kind of muscled it out there. And you know, on the mound, it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. Here’s the catcher to hit. Austin Wells. And a big swing and a miss. Yankees up by three. Next offering is fouled back. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and he’s registered three Ks in this one. Gosh, here it is. Hit it. Three pitch strikeout all fast balls. Man, he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch right now. Anthony Vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. Little chopper rolls foul. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Next offering in there for a strike and it’s 0 and two. Stanton the lead runner at second. Chisum over at first with one away. That one ripped left field and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases. One run is in. Not in time. He’s safe. It’s now nine to four. That’s a good job right there. You got two strikes on. You just got to battle. And here comes the Tigers manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Kaider Monttero out of the game. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. So, the Tigers get a new arm from the pen, Tyler Holton. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. There’s Ryan McMahon now. And first offering is fouled off. And that’s a little bit high. Pickoff throw. Vulpi back in on the drive. Foul ball still a one and two count. [Music] Man at second down and in. Moved his feet. Rudder takes off and it remains two and two. Still only one out here in the inning. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Here’s the Yankees leadoff hitter Trent Gisham. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run. There’s a strike action in the pen down there. Tommy Canley up and throwing. Melton getting loose as well. Next pitch is inside and it’s one and one. Runner at second. Two down here in the bottom of the seventh. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. Inning ends and that stops the bleeding. But three score in the inning. Two of them on this two-run double. It’s now 94. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back now in the Bronx. We go to the eighth. And the batter now, Spencer Torlson. Spencer Torlson. Lighter. Back to work. And a foul ball. Swang and a miss. Activity in the bullpen for the Yankees. Tim Hill getting loose out there for Aaron Boon. Dval getting cranked up as well up the middle. Sends it to first. First out in the top of the eighth. Now batting rightielder Wel Perez. And next up for the Tigers, Wel Perez. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Fouled off left side. pitches in the dirt. Now one and two. Swing and a hard hit liner up the middle and a base hit. So a man aboard now with one away up now for the Tigers. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a ground out. First pitch and he just misses. And there’s a breaking ball that drops in there. Man at first, one away. Two in one in the dirt. That one the other way. One at second. On to first. Double play. And that’s the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. Home half of inning number eight. Straight ahead. The Yankees nine and the Tigers four. And we’re back. Bottom of the inning. And stepping in for the Yankees, Aaron Judge. Judge. That one missed. the 1-1 and Judge spoils that one. Judge rips that one. Green should have this one one away. Just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. Bellinger in the box now. No balls in a strike. Hammered down the right side but foul. Next pitch is downstairs. Bases empty, one away here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. The other way and foul ball. Fights that one away. Still one and two. fouls that off to the left and will do it again. One down, base is empty. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. Now batting Ben Rice stepping in now for the Yankees. Rice. Yankees. Just missed. Close but called a ball and it’s two and0. York just missed. Two outs and it’s fouled away. gets a piece and stays alive. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. Ninth pitch of the at bat. Do next. Swinging a highf fly ball out there towards left field. Green flashes the leather on the run and catch. Now pitching for Tim Hill gets the call from the pen. He’s been so good against lefties. Tim Hill. Zack McKinstry up now for the Tigers. the baseman Zack McKinstry. That’s in there. And that is strike one. Definitely not a pitch location you’re expecting up there as a hitter when you know the guy’s got a good sinker ball. If he can get in that location, boy, you’ve got to look top to bottom and that’s going to make it very difficult to hit. Next offering is downstairs. Just missed. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Now batting catcher Jake Rogers. And up next for Detroit, Jake Rogers down hammer but pulled foul. got him and a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Now it’s going to be Parker Meadows singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. On the ground, right side, four, six, three, and that’s the ball game. A little sigh of relief for the pitcher there, ending the ball game with a nice double play. You always love when you can get two for one, especially when it wraps up the ball game. Nice win for this team today. 94 our final score. What a win for the Yankees. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show, I’m John Shambi. Thanks for joining us.
