30th Anniversary of ‘2131’ Cinematic Recap | Cal Ripken Jr. | Baltimore Orioles

Has it really been 30 years since September the 6th, 1995? We welcome you to Oral Park at Camden Yards and a special night at the ballpark. As today we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Cal Ripken Jr.’s 2131 when he became baseball’s all-time consecutive games leader. Cal’s legendary pursuit transcended far beyond the game itself and transformed into a nationwide celebration of steadfast but simple commitment and perseverance. When baseball needed healing, his unforgettable streak reconnected us all with the game’s enduring spirit. In the end, Cal was more than just baseball’s iron man. At a time of great need, he was its repair man. I’ve had 30 years to reflect on that wonderful night of 2131 and I still think it couldn’t have played out any better. That night was a celebration of an old oral principle that we show up each and every day to meet whatever challenge is thrown our way to count on each other. That one day at a time approach turned into 2,632 games in a row. I’ve had the great good fortune to play baseball. I’ve had the great good fortune to play for the Orioles. I’ve had the great good fortune to play with and against some of the greatest players in the game. I’ve had the greatest good fortune to play right here in my hometown of Baltimore in front of all of you. Thank you. It’s game two against the Dodgers. Trevor Rogers versus Yamamoto pitching at Camden Yards. Trevor Rogers since he debuted with the Orioles back in May, he has been the best pitcher in baseball. And then Yashanuba Yamamoto was an all-star for the first time this year. The O’s looking to win their fifth straight game. Great baseball, great guests. It’s going to be a magical night, we hope. Here’s [Music] a one-two swing and a miss. Trevor Rogers is pumped up tonight. He’s had some great stuff. I see Raphael Pomero in his Orioles jersey. Bobby Bonia in his Orioles jersey. They’re now out of the dugout. And they’re going to push Cal one more time. They push him out. He comes over, gives a handshake to Al Bumbrey as he waves towards the crowd and walks down the first baseline. And Cal sees some familiar friends and he’s shaking hands with the fans like he did on that magical night 30 years ago. [Music] One, two, swing and a miss for strike three on the split. Eight no hit innings for Yoshinobu Yamamoto. And we’re going to the ninth inning at Camden Yards with LA on top of the Orioles by 3 nothing score with everyone who’s already focused and ready for the bottom half. Yoshobu Yamamoto and he has had everything working and he is three outs away from throwing a no hitter. Well, it’ll be 89 and one. Kobe Mayo to center field. Justin Dean as the 26 now for Yoshobu Yamamoto. It’s up to 21-year-old Jackson Holiday. Two and one, two outs. Bottom of the ninth. The pitch swing and a fly ball. Hit well right field. Going back is Hernandez and they’re going to call it a home run. Jackson Holiday with one swing. The no hitter is gone. The shut out is gone and Yamamoto surrenders the home run with only one out left to get. Appropriate as it’s been on 30th anniversary of Cal’s night. It’s Jackson Holiday wearing Cal Senior’s old number seven who breaks up the no hit. Well, he still got a chance. Get a guy on. They are just one base runner away from giving Gunnar a shot here on a night that’s been filled with surprises. That is crushed. Out to deep left center field. This one is going a long way and it’s off the bottom part of the wall. Jackson headed to second base. And now here comes that tying run to the plate in the form of Gunnar Anderson. And the ballpark’s alive. Oh, hit him. It sure did. Henderson reaches base. [Music] He takes ball four and the Orioles load the bases. This game’s got a little drama, doesn’t it? Yes, it does. This game has turned rather quickly from a possible Dodger no hitter to a possible Dodger no winner. The Dodgers have had the Orioles at match point now for 25 pitches and it just got the lefty up. Tanner Scott [Music] 3-1 low ball four walked in a row. It’s a 32 ball game. The Dodgers lead is down to a run. A near no hitter has turned into a total disaster for LA. Emmanuel Rivera will try to tie it or win it. [Music] Can the Orioles do it again? It only takes one good swing. It’s 1-1. Line drive center field. That’s down base hit. Here’s the time run home. Coming home is Matteo. The throw is over the head of the catcher. Unbelievable. A tworun walk. Your hero is Emanuel Rivera. Baseball is crazy. One more magical moment in time on September the 6th in [Applause] [Applause] I don’t think there’s any give up in us. And um that was an awesome bat by Rivy and um the bats before to kind of set that all up. I thought we did a really nice job towards the end. I mean, he had our number in the first eight innings and and we finally got to got to him. So, uh it was pretty awesome. That’s just that’s our team, you know. We we go down fighting till the last out, last pitch, and that’s just that’s baseball for you. you you’re never out of the fight and that’s something that everyone in this locker room is going to remember probably forever. They win it over LA 4 to3 and the second walk-off win in as many nights. There is Orioles magic here in downtown Baltimore. [Music]

On September 6th, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the night Cal Ripken Jr. eclipsed Lou Gehrig’s record of 2130 consecutive games played. Following a pregame ceremony, the Orioles completed a comeback victory with a walk-off.

  1. Couldn't have happened on a more perfect night, my goodness what a win. How bout Geoff Arnold with that call, love it! In a season full of disappointment, it makes that moment so much sweeter
