He’s been a great defender all tournament but because it’s him and there’s a prebuilt negative narrative for him, no one wants to give him credit for it. He absolutely deserves being nominated for this award for the insane work he’s put in on the defensive end and if you don’t see it, then you’re blind.
It’s also annoying how much goal posts are moved for him. Luka’s led the entire tournament in steals but steals suddenly don’t matter to the NBA fans who haven’t seen a single EuroBasket game in the EuroBasket social media comments because it’s him. If Giannis led the entire tournament in steals, everyone would be glazing him and calling him an elite defender but because it’s Luka, nope. Luka’s also had a block most games and multiple blocks in some and he’s hustling hard on defense.

WHAT?!? I hope this is not some jokey award. If this is based on actual gameplay this would be an awesome indication of his seriousness towards playing defense.
Luka is usually a positive defender statistically even in the NBA. This is defensively a step above then his norm, tho. I think playoffs will let him use his size and physicality to its fullest. Great stuff.

He had always been good at steals. His defensive liability was his lateral movement. Any avg NBA player can blow past him on 1v1s. And at many times he forgets his positioning and loses his man on defense. If he can improve that area, We’ll be looking at an unstoppable player
