🔴LIVE🔴St Louis Cardinals VS Seattle Mariners /September 09/ MLB The show 25
about to get started here. And our pitcher in this game, Logan Gilbert, Chris, his strikeout rate this year among the best all time. He’s truly one of the elite strikeout pitchers in the league. I mean, strikeouts per nine off the chart. So, the opposing team, they know they have their work cut out for him anytime they’re facing this guy or a guy like this that’s going to get the swings and misses pretty much in a class of his own when it comes to that category. And that one hammered. Robless going back on this one. Makes the catch up against the wall. Here’s a Cardinals lineup. Now, this group was shut out their last game, so we’re going to see if they can bounce back with a better effort here today. And Boo, it can get in your head a little bit when you get shut out. You’re frustrated. You’re seeing that consecutive streak of innings you haven’t scored, and you want to get off to a great start. score early because if you don’t, you feel like it could linger into two consecutive games which no one wants to be a part of. Ivon Herrera the batter now as he swings and misses for strike one. And a swing and a miss. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. One out. Base is empty. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. Go, go. Dives, but it falls. And now it looks like extra bases. Cut off. Throw to third. Not in time. He’s safe. Everything came together for him. Got a fast ball middle of the plate. Jumped all over it. Absolutely smoked that ball. One down, runner at third. Now up for St. Louis, Alec Burlson. And that’s outside. Here stands at third with one gone in the inning. Hit hard but foul off to the left. [Music] And a slider in there for a strike. in the dirt, but kept close. And an excellent job keeping it right there. Backed off the plate that time. No scoring here, but a runner at third with one down. [Applause] Foul ball and it remains a full count. This one bashed to left center on its way. And that one’s out of here. His second homer this series. And that’s how they take the lead. It’s 2 nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. It’s like he’s playing whiffle ball up there. And that’s typically not the easiest way to hit a home run. To the slight opposite field into the gap. Man, making it look easy, that’s for sure. Here’s Nolan Gorman. Highf fly ball out towards left field. A Rosena going back and he can’t quite get there. It’s a foul ball. One down. Base is empty. What a stop. And very nicely done for the out. Batting fifth. Short stop. Mason win. Two down, base is empty. Mason Win next up for the Cardinals. Win playing up the middle. It’s short, hitting fifth in today’s lineup. And he was a second round pick in 2020. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still able to fire over and save. Couldn’t recover from the misplay. Well, with two outs, I’m thinking he had his mind on getting in the dugout so they could get to hitting. All it takes is just a little lapse in concentration. So now let’s see if his pitcher will pick him up. So two down and now the Cardinals catcher Jimmy Krooks. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. He’s given up a couple of runs, but the pitch count really not as high as you would think. Might be able to get through this one under 25 pitches. Gilbert checks on first. Win back on a dive, two outs. That’s in for a strike. Cold night like tonight, last thing you want to do as a hitter is get jammed or even off the end. Trying to find that sweet spot on the bat. Tell you what, you’re going to be trying to catch things out front. So off speed pitches may be a good complement to that fast ball. That’s to third and that chance handled. Third out. [Applause] Two runs for St. Louis on this blast. It’s now a two nothing ball game. Back at T-Mobile Park and on the mound in this one, Miles Michaels. Well, you can see his whip is a little above the league average. Not bad, but I think in this one, he’s going to need to control that a little bit better. Try to limit hitters from getting on base. Stay in that windup instead of the stretch. And when he does allow base runners, be able to throw a pitch, he’s going to get a swinging miss, get out of the inning. so that a base hit doesn’t do more damage and put his team behind the eightball. Here’s the left fielder, Randy Rosarena, right through there for a strike. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Popped up. Michael puts it away for the out. One away. And now we check out the Mariners lineup. It features one of the sports true superstars, Cal Raleigh, and he’s leading them in runs batted in this season, which tells me this guy is able to slow things down when it seems like there’s a little bit of pressure. And he’s looking at as an opportunity to do damage. You know, a lot of guys, they see runners on base and they get big, they feel like all this pressure, I’ve got to get these runs in, but somehow he seems to settle into these situations. So, watch out when he comes to the plate. Cal Raleigh the next to hit takes ball one. I think it’s very important to establish the inside part of the plate early. Sets the tone for the rest of the game. Fought off foul. Pitch is in there and it’s one and two. That’s down and in. A slider missed and it remains two and two. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. And that just misses. Really good take especially with two strikes. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Ninth pitch of the at bat. Do next. [Applause] Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck that one back there out of here. His 54th home run of the season. It’s 2-1. He kept swinging and it paid off. Well, that was a battle, Boo. And he just kept taking his cuts. Finally squared one up. [Applause] Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. So, one out, nobody on. And now it’s Julio Rodriguez. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. and he pumps in a strike. Two pretty nasty sliders to get this hitter in an 02 count. If you’re up there at the plate, you got to look up in the zone and spit on anything that’s down. And that skips in the dirt. Hard on the ground to first and he handles it himself for the out. Batting fourth first baseman Josh. And now it’s Josh Naylor taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. And there’s a strike on the outside corner. just missed. One in one. That one almost got him. Two out. Base is empty. [Applause] Now he breaks his bat to Jay-Z. Makes the catch and go over, but not before they answer back with a solo home run. And it’s now a two-1 ball game. back in Seattle. Top of the second and here is Thomas Sajay-Z Gilbert back to work. That one misses and it’s one and0. One and0 headed towards the corner and a foul ball. The 1-1 is fouled off. And that one’s a little bit low. And the count is two and two. Wow, that’s a tough pitch to lay off. Next offering miss is down and away. in the air right side. Robless and out number one on the grab. Batting eight, right fielder Jordan Walker. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Jordan Walker. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. And there’s a foul ball. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. So, a man aboard now with one away. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So, we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Now, here is Victor Scott. There’s the strike. All ones are count. Just missed. Mike Filmore, our played umpire, very consistent with his zone. Chris, gets a lot of praise for that. He does, Boog. And I think that with any umpire, you really just want them to be consistent. Filillmore’s a guy that does a good job back there in that way. So, people around the league really appreciate his consistency. Walker leads off first with one away. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. couldn’t catch up to the heater. You usually are going to see that inside fast ball a little longer coming in from the opposite side, but that pitch really got in on him right there. I mean, that’s a wellthrown pitch. Tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and the sweet spot of the bat to the baseball. Back to the top of the lineup, Lars Nbar. Next up for the Cardinals. That’s hard hit on the line. A Rosarena makes the catch and that is that. The Cards leave one. They lead it 2-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom half of inning number two. And now here’s the veteran DH Jorge Palano. First pitch misses. fouled off. He was late. Ball to strike. That’s inside. [Music] That one pulled foul. way outside. Three balls, two strikes. Auheno Suarez in the Yandex circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. That one misses. So, a lead off walk. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. just couldn’t find the strike zone. No outs. Runner at first. Au Heno Suarez up next for the Mariners. If you don’t get ahead in the count, you can forget about having any success against him. Pitch misses inside and that’s ball one. Runner at first with no outs here. And that one fouled off. A little out front there as he swings through it with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. Smash that one through the infield for the knock. When it’s hit that hard, it makes it very tough on the infielders to make any sort of play. Now a pretty big at bat coming up with a chance to even this ball game up. And stepping in for the Mariners, JP Crawford. And the first pitch is drilled in the air out to center. Makes the catch and there’s one gone. batting eight right fielder Victor Robless [Music] and now it’s Victor Robless up to hit how many times have we seen an early at bat change the course of a game it happens every night in baseball and maybe it happens again here there’s a strike really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count he’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter next pitch misses way outside at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot. Anything but the inning ending double play boo. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Runners at first and second with one gone. Bottom half of inning number two. Hard hit, base hit around third. He scores to tie it up. Save. And now second and third with one gone. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. So, two in scoring position with one out. Rebas the next to hit. Golden opportunity right here. Grounder off the pitcher. Can’t pick it up with the bare hand. And everyone’s safe. They’re loaded. Now batting left fielder Randy and now they’ll hustle out to check on him. That was quite a shot he took as you see him down on the knee. Yeah, clearly in some real pain, but he will not want to come out of this game if he doesn’t have to. It’s looking to me like he’s going to try to shake it off and continue. So bases loaded with one away. Now it’s Randy Rosarena. Fast for a strike. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Outside low and now it’s even one and one activity in the bullpen. Sunny Gray, the veteran right-hander appears to be loosening up. Palante a hardthrowing right-hander up as well. in the air on the infield and the infield fly is called up next for the Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh up next for the Mariners. He’s already homerred in this game. It’s early, but these at bats can impact a game just as much as they do later. Here’s a chance to set the tone early for your team. swing and a highf fly ball left field. Nukebar sizing this one up drops into the glove and that is the third out of the inning. RBI double for the M’s two- two game. back after this on the show. And we’re back. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. As a batter, he’s known for performing better in these night games. He might start two for two in this one. Chopped to the left side. Suarez whips it across. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Now batting the first baseman, Alec Burlson. So up next, Alec Burlson. He’s already homered here in this one. Mariners. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Mariners. Now a screamer into the outfield. That’s a fair ball and it’s getting into the corner. Takes the turn. He’s digging for second. The throw to second is offline. All over that one right there. Ripped that one down the line and kept it fair. And even when you hit it that far out front, you still have to keep your hands tight to your body so you don’t hook around that baseball and put it in foul territory. And that right there was perfect. A chance now to take the lead. And at this point in the game, that could be a deciding run. And now here is Nolan Gorman. Check swing called strike. Edge of the zone for a strike and it’s nothing and two. Some activity in the Mariners bullpen. Matt Brash preparing to come on if needed. Hancock also getting ready. Burlson over at second. One down. base hit. Rodriguez hustles to get it in as the go-ahead runner pulls up at third. Singy, that was a laser shot. And a good thing we have Stackcast to give us the details. Yeah, get out of the way on that one. That ball flew out of the box at 112 mph. You talk about generating a ton of power in that swing. He did it with quick hands, good lower half, and just unloaded on that ball. at the play. Mason win. The shorts stop takes a ball. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot and fouled off. swings through that one for strike two. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out. Swing and a ball lifted in the air. Shallow right field. Pulls it down and there’s two gone. Now batting catcher Jimmy Crooks. Now at the plate, Jimmy Crooks. Outside low. Ball one. Seattle. Come on, Mariners. Yeah. Line to left and that’s the third out. So, the Cards strand a couple. Score remains 2-2. Back at T-Mobile Park, set for the bottom of the third. Here’s the center fielder, Julio Rodriguez. Rodriguez. A little bit high. One and0. No. And another ball. Now a popup on the infield. Burlson makes the grab. One away. That was a good hard fast ball with some nice ride up in the zone right there. Hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end just beat him instead of a line drive or something hit deep. It’s a pop up and an easy out for the defense. Naylor in the box with one away as he takes ball one and that misses now two and0. Swings through that one for strike one. As a hitter, you got to learn something from that pitch. He clearly wasn’t timed up on the fast ball. In a 200 count, you have to be ready to do damage. tapped in front of the plate and that quickly two away. Now batting the designated hitter Jorge. The batter now Jorge Palano walked his first time. Come on. And that one a little below the knees. And that is ball one. Got it started a little too early. Strike one. I got a ball. One strike. Seattle. Next offering upstairs. Count to three and two. And they’ll do it again. Let’s go. And down on strikes he goes. And a nice inning of work there as he sets him down. One, two, three. Mariners go down quietly there. Score remains deadlocked to 22. Now pitching new pitcher now, Matt Brash. And one thing on him, he’s been really good this season at keeping the ball in the park. Not an easy guy to take deep. Now it’s the second baseman Thomas Sajay-Z fly to right his first time [Music] misses outside and it’s one and0. to Jay-Z in his rookie season, 22 years old, and he was a fifth round pick in 2020. And a foul ball. That misses. Two balls, two strikes. The guy at the plate could recognize slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. He knew right away it was an off-speed pitch. Got him swinging. Just indecisive in that at bat. He couldn’t commit to the slider. tried to sit in between, just not able to put the bat on the ball. Jordan Walker digs in now, one for one with a single so far. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. fouled off down the right side. [Music] Next offering is outside. All tied up. Top half of inning number four. And it’s even up. He has a tendency to chase out of the zone. And that slider that’s down, that’s one of his money pitches to get that swing and miss. Next offering way off the plate. There’s a swing and a drive. Rodriguez ranging back, grabs it right up against the wall. Now batting the center, Victor Scott. Victor Scott next up for the Cardinals. Struck out swinging his first time. Ball one, no strikes. And another ball. Two down. Doon just missed. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, it’s a good take by him. And that’s ball four. And he’s a guy that will certainly think about stealing a bag or two. Not the kind of speed you want to put on base in a tie game. back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup. Lars Nbar next up for the Cardinals. Bowl for two in this one. And that one clips the corner. Rash picks the first and he’s back in easily. And that’s just foul. [Applause] Two outs. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Applause] Next pitch is outside. [Applause] Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. So, one left for the Cardinals and this game is still tied at two and two. [Applause] Welcome back. And they turn to a new arm as we kick off the bottom of the fourth. Kyle Ley. And compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So, the defense should be active. Suarez leading things off and takes a strike. A swing and a miss as he chases way out of the zone. spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another ball. One there. Not close with that one. Two and two. Got him. Outside pitch got the better of him that time. And now for Seattle. JP Crawford flyed to center his first time and that one is in the dirt. Ball one [Applause] and a strike. Establishing both ends of the zone is critical. Most times guys are wanting to get hitters out down, but if you can get them to look up, get a called strike, that’s going to make that strike zone a lot bigger. Swinging a ground ball. Gorman in plenty of time to first already two gone here in the home for Mariners right fielder Victor Rob. Here’s Victor Robless. He doubled home a run in his first AB. in there for strike one. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Outside low and the count is one and one. [Applause] The 1-1 is fouled off. He’s dealing with a great two strike hitter right here. The strikeout is not automatic. Next pitch is downstairs. [Applause] Cut on and miss. Curve ball struck him out. Mariners are down in order through four. We’re deadlocked at two a piece. Now, we’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Gabe Spire. He’s got some of the best swing and miss stuff going right now. He’s striking out hitters at a very high rate this year. So, this should be fun to watch. Now, the number two hitter, Ivon Herrera, one for two in the game. He tripled and scored in the first. And that’s through there for a strike. 0 and one. Just missed. [Music] We got two balls, one strike [Applause] down the line and it’s fouled. It’s so hard to slow yourself down when you see that juicy breaking ball, but the most success happens when you try to take that right back up the middle approach. Battling here as he fouls it away [Applause] and a swing and a miss. One gone here. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this, known for using the entire field. just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. And up next for St. Louis, Alec Burlson. And a breaking ball drops in for a strike. That one at the knees for a strike. Next offering is downstairs. good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. [Applause] Gets a piece and stays alive. [Applause] Good eye right there. Man, oh man. I don’t know how you take that pitch. That’s as close as it gets. Hard hit left side. Crawford throws to first in time. And the first two set down in the top of the fifth. Now batting third baseman Nolan Gorman. Nolan Gorman next up for the Cardinals. One for two inside and that’s ball one. Next offering is fouled back. Pitch misses. Two and one. And that one is inside. Mason win in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. And a 3-1 on the way. And a foul ball. [Applause] Two down. Nobody on. And there’s ball four. One of the things about that two out walk. The base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Now up for St. Louis, Mason Win. Sing, you talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. This one belted deep left field on its way. Gone. He powers that one out of here. Home run number 10 on the year and they lead it. It’s 42. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. Love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat. You watch him from the on deck circle. So when you step in the box, you’re ready to pull the trigger wherever it’s at. Really good job by the hitter. Total conviction on that swing. And now the catcher comes up to him, Jimmy Crooks. And there’s the strike. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. and ball one. One and one. The one-1 is fouled off. Swing and a miss. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now 42. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Jorge Alcala. Left-handed batter at the plate and he’s been excellent in those matchups this year. So, this seems like a calculated move. Digging in, Leo Reeas reached on an infield single his first time. Reas in there at the knees and that’s strike one. Well, these Mariners just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. You really can’t pin it on one player because we’ve seen soft contact up and down this lineup. It’s time to make some adjustments because this approach is just off. Wind settles under it and makes the catch and there’s one down. Couple of pitches and a quick out. The cause for these struggles is a little different for each hitter. For some it’s timing and for others it’s mechanics. Whatever it is, they need to start hitting the ball harder. A Rosena at the plate for the third time as he comes up empty there. Let’s go Mariners one there. Now two balls in a strike. [Applause] Misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. 3-1 and he couldn’t come up with it. And that’ll bring the tying run to the plate. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Now the Mariners catcher, Cal Raleigh. He’s one of the best players in the game. And things could change quickly here with one swing. Now these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. Swing and a miss. That one at 99. Strike one. Swing and a miss. Chased it out of the zone. A little anxious, a little aggressive early in the count. Too much for me. And he grounds one to the right side and it goes just foul. Pretty good pitch there to take a rip at. He wants to get his arms extended. He likes the ball away from him a little bit. Just not able to square it up. That missed by a lot. One and two to count. But Rosarena over at first with one away. Well, with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt, a good secondary lead doesn’t have to get away from the catcher, but if you’re anticipating based off the trajectory, get yourself in the scoring position. [Applause] Tying run at the plate. This one drilled right center field. That one heading for the fence and gone. Another homer. Home run number 55 on the year and we are tied. It’s 44. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. [Applause] does an excellent job of getting his arms extended to get the fat part of the bat to the baseball. Wrists do not roll over. They stay through the zone and on plane. Excellent swing. [Applause] So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. And up next for Seattle, Julio Rodriguez. And that is downstairs. One and0 fast ball for a strike. Well, we call that keyholeing. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. Swing and a miss. And the count one and two on the mound. You take a note. You see the hitter’s willingness to chase that pitch upstairs, get deeper in the count, try to climb the ladder. Out to center. Scott gets there. He’s under it. Makes the catch for the second out. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. Here’s Josh Naylor. Top of the zone for a called strike. Come on. Yeah, that one ripped but foul. Foul ball still 0 and two. Waves at the bender for the strikeout. Just one hit in the inning, but it was a big one right here as it ties the ball game. All even now at four a piece. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back and on the mound is the closer Luke Jackson. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Here’s the second base, Thomas Sajay-Z. Thomas. That one finds the zone. And that is strike one. In there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. A leadoff single and the go-ahead run is aboard. I’d say a mistake pitch in an 02 count. Too good of a pitch to hit right there. You have to expand the zone. Keep that leadoff man off first base. Now it’s the right fielder Jordan Walker. Leadoff man is on. You got to be looking for the bunt here, trying to get him into scoring position. If you’re a base runner, you got to stay dialed in here. Look for anything in the dirt. Try your best to get into scoring position. Line drive and a base hit. Lead runner to second. So, two on and nobody out. Backto-back singles. hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely, and that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. Really important at bat coming up now. So, the go-ahehead run is into scoring position. Scott will hit next. He’s 0 for one. And a sack bunt here. Suarez throws to first in time. The runners move up on the sacrifice. That’s a good piece of hitting right there. The job was to move the runner up and give your team a chance to score the go-ahead run. That’s exactly what happened. So, you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that at bat. Next to hit, Lars Nbar 0 for three in this one. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. Bats in there and it’s 0 and two. Stays alive. Definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside. Really think the outer half is open [Applause] and a foul ball. He stays alive. Tied at four. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. [Applause] That one not close and a count one and two to Jay-Z on third. Walker over at second with one down. [Applause] That one outside and it’s two and two. [Applause] in the air left field. A Rosarena sizes this one up, brings it in. Runner tags from third. The throw is offline and he’s in to score and it’s now 54. Sometimes all you got to do is your job and don’t over complicate things. Keep it simple. Runner at third, less than two outs. put the ball in play and a nice job with the sack fly. Ivon Herrera now at the plate one for three. A bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Ryan Woo getting loose out there. Munoz getting cranked up as well. Two outs and one in scoring position. comes up empty. [Applause] Ground ball Naylor tosses to the pitcher covering the bag. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. So they pick up a run on two hits. No errors and a man left. We go to the bottom half of inning number six. And the 567 slots do up. It’s the Cardinals five and the M’s four. Welcome back. And here comes the closer Jojo Romero. These are the spots relievers really make a name for themselves. Late and close. There’s not much margin for error, but at the same time, there’s a reason they’re put in these situations. In now is the Mariners DH, Jorge Palano, a switch hitter, batting right, just missed. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Let’s go. Close but called a ball. And it’s two and one. Homeplayed umpire is trying to tighten things up a little bit. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. [Applause] looking to get the tying run on base. Outside with a breaking ball, Au Heno Suarez in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] Now a pop up on the infield. Are you kidding me? calls it in and there’s one away. Now batting third baseman Aueno Suarez. Auhane Suarez up to hit now. A lot of times you’re looking for a guy to get that tying run on base, but because of the power, you want him to tie up the game with one swing here. Little chopper rolls foul. Highf fly ball right field. This could go the distance. Home run. And this place is rocking and we are all tied up. It’s 55. That swing completely changes the momentum of this game. Boo. [Applause] Really great job of anticipation there. He knows he throws the sinker. That one down in the zone. You’re trying to beat it to the spot it’s getting to. Well, he won. [Applause] So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. JP Crawford up next for the Mariners. [Applause] The shorts stop takes a ball. ripped to short. The throw to first. That’s out number two. Oh, we talk about how the ball is coming out of a pitcher’s hand. The way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. Victor Robless the next to hit. Rolled softly, but that goes foul. Back and forth we go. A seessaw battle in the late stages of this one. And that one misses up and in. Yeah, the count. One and two. And there’s a ball. inside. Almost got him. [Music] Fouled off again and it remains three and two. Laser could be troubled around first and hustling for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Well, here we go. Winning run is on base with two away. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game. [Applause] So runner at second, two down. Now a chance for Leo Reebas. Pitches in for a strike 0 and one. Come on Seattle. hit hard on the ground to short. Fires across the diamond. That’s the third out. And we’re headed to extras. The Mariners pick up a run thanks to this solo homer. All even at five a piece. You’re dialed into the show. Back in Seattle, top of inning number seven. And stepping in for the Cardinals, Alec Burlson. [Music] [Applause] Jackson back to work. There’s the strike. Check swing. No appeal. That one is absolutely belted. hops over the wall and that’s an automatic double as a run scores on the play. Oh, that’s how you respond. Leadoff man comes up, gets into scoring position. Now, there are several ways that they can get this run across. And here comes the Mariners manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Luke Jackson gives way and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So, the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now, new pitcher for the Mariners, Ryan Woo. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Jose Farmine next up for the Cardinals. Next offering, pop foul off to the right out of play. You know, these Cardinals, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They have five extra base hits on the stat sheet so far, and that tells me they’re seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well. With all those extra base hits, it’s easy to think we’re going to see that trend continue the rest of the game. They seem to be really locked in at the plate. Got him. Not what you’re looking for after the leadoff double. A strike out and there’s one away. Mason Win getting ready to hit. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. Check swing called strike. One-run game. One out, one on. That one just misses. Now one and two. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. I’ll sit him down. Good job to fight that one off. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Here’s the catcher, Jimmy Crooks. [Applause] That misses the zone and that is ball one. Let’s go Mariners. [Applause] swing and a tapper that rolls foul [Applause] man at second and that one is downstairs and that’s ball two [Applause] fans another and that’s Three straight strikeouts, a run, a hit, and a man left. Seventh inning stretch time. It’s the Cardinals six and the Mariners five. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Sunny Gray. This guy’s a strikethrower. He’s done an excellent job of a The batter now, Randy Rosarena. Swing and a miss. It’s 0 and one. In today’s game, outs are valuable. So guys aren’t just willing to give themselves up to advance a runner. They’re trying to drive him in as well in the process. So I don’t expect him to shorten up and just try to hit behind the runner here. Swings and misses and the count is 0 and two. So the tying run at second and one and two. Well, if he’s going to do something special right here, it’s going to have to happen with two strikes. That’s foul off to the right side. Keeps the AB going. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball and that’s outside. Cal Raleigh in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Applause] got him looking for the strike out. Called strike three and a fast ball up in the zone. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter and I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. One more. And now for Seattle, Cal Raleigh. He’s got a couple homers already, so can he possibly do it again? Come on, man. Of course he can. Those two he hit were legit. And he looks pretty locked in right now at the dish. [Applause] First pitch misses. [Applause] right through there for a strike. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. Come on. With the winning run at the plate. Yeah, the home team trying to pull it out. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. These hitters like this that have so much power, look forward to seeing them hit the ball a long way. But if you’re in the stands or you’re in a broadcast booth or you’re a writer, better keep your eye on the game. And the curve is down and in. [Applause] Chem out. Now only one out remaining. Julio Rodriguez will hit next trying to deliver as the hero. Rodriguez. And there’s the strike. Goodness. I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound. That’s outside and it’s a ball and a strike upstairs with the tying run at second. Winning run at the plate here in extra innings. In the air, left field down the line into the corner, but fouled. [Applause] The Mariners down to their final strike. [Applause] Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Pitcher having a pretty tough time getting that swing and miss. Third foul ball in a row. Two on the way. Swing and a miss. And that’s the ball game. The ball for his first career save deserves to be on display at his house. I mean, it’s kind of like when a restaurant frames its first dollar bill somewhere in a wall. You just can’t forget your first save. 65 the final here today for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. We’ll see you soon.
