🔴LIVE 🔴Tampa Bay Rays VS Chicago White Sox/September 09/ Envivo Tv /MLB THE SHOW 25

It’ll be the show with a good one coming at you. It’s the Tampa Bay Rays going up against the Chicago White Socks. First pitch coming your way next. And now, please welcome your Chicago White Socks. All right, just about ready for baseball. And on the mound today, Davis Martin. Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble. Trust that his stuff can have late life and miss barrels of bats. Now, it’s the rookie DH number 14. And that’s him for a strike. And we are underway. Next offering in there for a strike. No balls, two strikes. Well, they left that change up. Got away with one there and he’ll take it, but doesn’t want to make that mistake again. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side and there’s one down. All right, let’s take a look at the lineup. And one to watch, of course, their three-hole hitter, Junior Camero. Yeah, definitely someone I always enjoy, you know, when I get a chance to watch him, whether he’s hitting in a game or even taking swings during batting practice. Man, this guy’s always so focused on what he’s doing on that task at hand. He’s got so much attention to detail that when he steps in the box, his success rate is really high. Yandi Diaz batting with one down, takes a strike. One out. Base is empty. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Strike him out. Foul ball still 0 and two. sit him down and that’s a strike out looking called strike three and a fast ball up in the zone. So he gets the call and picks up the strike out looking. Sometimes with a good hitter at the plate, he’ll be the one to get the benefit of the doubt if he lays off on a close pitch like that, but just not right there. Strike zone definitely expand a little bit with two strikes. Junior Camro next to hit for the Rays. All right, Davis. And he swings and misses and it’s nothing at one. He’s an intimidating presence in the batters box. I mean, even when he’s swinging and missing, I still don’t know how confident pitchers are that, hey, when he walks to the plate, this guy’s an out. I know there have been some tough times, but I think each pitcher knows that, yeah, I could be the guy where he gets everything right and he hits it 500 ft. No doubt. swing and that ball smashed on a line. He’s got it and that’ll do it. Rays go in order. One, two, three. Time for the White Socks to go to work. No score. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back at Field towing the slab in today’s game. Drew Rasmusson. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. And it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point, maybe it’s the motion, but just some way somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. Swinging a miss and it’s one and one. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good and then by the time he gets in the hitting zone hard to get the barrel to it. One ball, two straight. Next offering upstairs. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Here’s a 2-2. gets a piece and stays alive. Right side. Low has it sized up and puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s one away. Time to check out the lineup for the White Socks. A really frustrating showing for them in their last game. Lots of traffic on the bases, but they left a ton of runners on base. Couldn’t cash in their chances. Chris, they had plenty of chances. There’s nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively. They just did a poor job converting in those situations. You have to figure out what’s your plan going to be. Maybe watch some tape from the last game. Make the adjustment. So, if you get those opportunities in this one, you’ve got a much better chance of scoring some runs. Kyle Teal the next to hit takes ball one. And that’s downstairs and outside. Slapped foul. One down. Base is empty. Bats in there. Two balls, two strikes. Goes down looking. Well, definitely a borderline pitch right there. And he didn’t look too convinced as he headed back to the dugout. You know, those are tough ones to let go as a hitter, but with a human umpire calling balls and strikes, it’s always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes. And here is Sosa to the plate. And that misses. And that’s ball one. Rasmusen, 29 years old, and he was a sixthround draft pick back in 2018. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. All right. Up the middle and that chance handled in plenty of time to first. Inning over. One, two, three. Go the White Socks. Scoreless after one. Top of the second. The batter now, Brandon Laauo. Brandon Laauo. [Music] Martin back to work. Swinging a foul back. That’s out of play. That one fouled off. Gets a piece and it stays 0 and two. Strike him out. Hit in the air. Right field. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there’s one down. Lefties can definitely be a little pole happy up there, especially with pitches that they see pretty well. That was a good example. He hooked an outside pitch. Hit that ball in the air to right, just not with much authority. Go back to Christopher Morurell in the box now. No balls in a strike. No score here in the second. Founding ball here. Rolls foul. Misses off the play and count one and two. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That misses the zone. It’s two and two. Strike him out. Swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strikeout. Everson Pereira the next to hit. Pereira. Check swing called strike. And that is strike one. [Music] Two down. Nobody on and takes low for ball one [Music] on the corner for a strike. caught him looking for the K. Down in order go the Rays. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Back here on the south side, we head to the bottom of the second and now the shorts stop. Coulson Montgomery. And a foul ball. [Music] Well, it looks like he’s wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone. What does that mean? Top hand better be working for the hitters. Adjust that side a little bit. Give yourself a chance to hit. And there’s a ball. Really good take, especially with two strikes. The shorts stop takes a ball. Swings here and drives one well left field way back. And you can forget it. And this place is rocking. And the White Socks strike first. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Really great job of anticipation there. He knows he throws the sinker. That one down in the zone. You’re trying to beat it to the spot it’s getting to. Well, he won. Now it’s Andrew Benendi to hit. [Applause] First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Ben Tendy, the former first round pick, Golden Spikes award winner. Andy ripped on a line. Low makes the catch and there’s one away. It was all over that fast ball right there. I tell you what, if he gets under it just by a fraction of an inch or a little bit more, that’s way back. Curtis me steps to the plate for the White Socks. Right through there for a strike. Rasmusen, not a big strikeout guy, but still very effective as far as starting pitchers go. one of those guys that involves the defense and really gets him involved in the action. And the one outside, he moves the ball around all the quadrants of the strike zone and will add and subtract velocity and because of that he gets the weak contact. It’s all about missing the barrel of the bat. That’s off the inside corner. Two and one. It seems like this type of guy is kind of a dying breed nowadays. Well, exactly. When teams are looking for high velocity, high strikeout rates, guy like this doesn’t necessarily do that. So, in order to really appreciate how good he is, you have to see him because if you’re just looking at a stat sheet, you might overlook him. Come on to the right side and that’s just fouled. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Swings and miss has struck him out. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level. that discipline to remember. I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that. Ah, well, he settles under it in left and that will end the inning. But the White Socks get one on a homer. It’s now one- nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. On to the third inning. And now the right fielder, Josh Low. in there at the knees and it’s 0 and one. Rolled softly but that goes foul. swing and a fly ball well struck left field hauls it in for the out [Applause] batting eight catcher here’s the catcher Nick Forez first pitch misses [Music] That’s inside. Raised down by a run and another ball. Next offering is in for a strike. And that one misses outside. It’s ball four. Maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there. Pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass. Now up for Tampa Bay. Carson Williams. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. That’s out to center field. Baldwin under it. Brings it in. Two away. Now batting hitter Chandler Simpson. line drive and that should be extra bases. Lead runner makes the turn at second. Forez headed for the plate. He’ll score. A costly mistake in the outfield thanks to the bad read and terrible timing for that to happen. That’s a play you just want to forget about. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. So next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Yandi Diaz. And a strike on the outside edge. Ball game is still tied. They can get out of this inning with a tie game. Chicago. Two outs. Sliced hard but fouled. Got him looking and he didn’t like the call. Rays get an RBI double. Call even now at 1-1. as we go to the last of the third. Now it’s the switchhitting outfielder, Brooks Baldwin. Brooks Baldwin. Fast for a strike. Looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone. middle away. Next pitch misses outside and one and one. Upstairs. That one misses. And that’s ball three. Straighten him up a little bit. And here’s a 3-2 and a swing and a miss. That K is his third of the game. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years. I mean, with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So, very difficult to get the barrel on it. Now, one out to right low sizes this one up. He makes the catch and there’s two down. Up next for the White Socks. There’s Mike Tman. Fly to right. His first time. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. That’s a ball. Tried the sweeper. Two outs. Base is empty. Come on. Next offering is fouled back. Outside low. Now two and two. And that one is inside. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Popped up left side. Williams. He’s there. He’s got it. And that’s the third out. Nothing across here this half. On to inning number four. All tied 1-1 here on the south side. John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Junior Camero. Come on, White Socks. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, these Rays just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. So many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they’re chasing outside of the strike zone. You can’t do much of anything with those locations. And that’s been true again today. That one ripped and it gets into the corner, but it’s fouled. And as a pitcher, when the hitters are swinging at everything, you feel no need to challenge inside the zone. You just keep working the corners and expanding that strike zone and beyond, and they just keep eating right out of your hand. I’m sure he feels really good about that one. Just a simple ground ball the other way that had eyes on it, man. Sometimes that’s all you need to do. Just let the ball travel, put the ball in play, and just hope it finds a hole. Go ahead run on base. Lao at the plate. He’s 0 for one. Hammer down the line. And now maybe extra bases. The go-ahead run moves up to third. He’s held there with nobody out. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. Davis Martin is done and he’s on the hook for the runners at second and third. So looking for some help there. Back in a minute. Jordan Leisure gets the ball now. Should be a good first matchup for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him up. Now the left fielder, Christopher Morell. Golden opportunity right here. And that drops in for a strike. Swinging a foul back and that’s out of play. and ball one. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Steven Wilson preparing to come on if needed. [Music] On the ground, right side. What a stop. comes home with it. Not in time. He beat it and they’ve got the lead. Now batting the center. So runners at the corners. Nobody out. Everson Pereira next to hit for the Rays. Went down on strikes. His first time through and that one is inside ball one. [Music] in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate there to the left side, but it is well fouled. got him swinging for the strike out. Went back to the slider and it was a good idea. So, he needed a strike out there and he got it. And now we’ll see how they play it defensively. Yeah, now they can move the middle infielders back a little bit, get into double play depth and look for a ground ball and roll it up, get a big double play, get out of this inning. I tell you what, that was a big strikeout in a spot where they really needed one. Now Josh Low, first pitch doesn’t find the zone. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning. Two on, one out. Inside two and 0. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Kicks and fires. Fought off foul. Runner on the go. That one is absolutely belted. This one could be trouble. One runs in. Runner around third. Across is the runner from first. Cut off. Throw to third. In there safely. Well, that’s a huge swing to clear the bases. Drive in two and get all the way around to third. Really nice job to take that inside pitch and pull it into the gap. He could have easily spun off of it or just been tied up. He stayed short to the baseball and he was thinking triple right out of the box. One down, runner at third. And now the catcher comes up to him, Nick Forez. He reached out to walk his first time. That one is upstairs. the one and another ball. swinging a foul straight back. The 2-1 and a swing and a miss there. He has a tendency to chase out of the zone and that slider that’s down, that’s one of his money pitches to get that swing and miss. And a swing and a miss. Two gone. Just indecisive in that at bat. He couldn’t commit to the slider. Tried to sit in between. Just not able to put the bat on the ball. Carson Williams next to hit for the Rays. Fly to center his first time. out in front. Rip foul. [Music] Swing and a liner. Foul off to the right. Two outs and a runner at third. Top half of inning number four. on the ground right side. My draw gets it to first. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Three runs on three hits, no errors and a runner left to the bottom of inning number four. Now it’s the Rays four and the White Socks won. And we’re back. And here’s the catcher, Kyle Teal. The White Socks in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laid-off man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. Now he breaks his bat. Makes the catch for the out. [Music] Up next for the White Socks. First base. Lenny Sosa steps to the plate for the White Socks. Rolled out to second in his first at bat. Sosa 25 years old and he was born in Venezuela. And that is out of play. And a big swing and a miss. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Ian Seymour, the rookie left-hander, appears to be getting going. Clevenger also getting ready. The Rays leading by three. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Puts it away for the out. Now batting. And up next for Chicago, Coulson Montgomery. He’s already homered here in this one. One more time, baby. Fast for a strike. swing and a ball popped up. Lao should have this one and makes the play and that’s out number three. Nothing doing it for the White Socks and they trail it 4-1. New pitcher for the White Socks. Yandre Gomez gets an opportunity to square off against his former team. So I wouldn’t be surprised if he came out a little extra jacked up right here. Back to the top of the order. Here’s the Rays leadoff hitter. First offering and it just misses. Well, these Rays digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. They’ve hit seven line drives already and even though some of them have been for outs, there’s nothing wrong with delivering consistent hard contact. That’s and it drops in and it gets by him. Around second now as they still don’t have it now around third. Waving him home. The relay to the plate. It’s offline. The run comes in and they lead by four. Well, they call it one of the most exciting plays in baseball for a reason. Boo. Always fun to see an inside the Parker and man he was flying out of the box and I think that by the time he was getting to second he had it in his mind to go all the way. That’s just great hustle from start to finish. Yandi Diaz now went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. First pitch just misses. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. It’s so hard to slow yourself down when you see that juicy breaking ball, but the most success happens when you try to take that right back up the middle approach. Swing and a miss and he got him. And that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Third time he struck out in this one. And definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days. But when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. Keminero in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Swinging a foul pushed off to the right. Heart of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. Hard hit right side. Sends it to first. That’s an out. Now batting second base. Two down. Base is empty. And now it’s going to be Brandon Laauo. One for two. outside with a breaking ball. Line drive and that should be extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second. In safely, it’s a double and his second hit. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did and he did it perfectly. And stepping in for the Rays, Christopher Morell outside corner. There’s the strike. Loud on it second with two down. [Music] And that one fouled off. Got him swinging. So they pick up a run on two hits. No errors in a man left. Home half of the fifth. Coming up. It’s the Rays five and the White Socks won. back at right field. And now the DH Andrew Benendi. Rasmusa back to work and the pitch is in for a strike. 0 and one. You know, these White Socks just aren’t putting together very many good at bats in this one. Just one base runner to this point and it’s not exactly headed towards the corner. Bounces over the wall in foul ground and it’s an automatic double. The automatic double kind of feels like enjoying cruise control in your car. Boo. You don’t need to keep the pedal down as you cruise into second base. Just no worries in the world. You know what? He put a really good swing on that one. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Curtis me steps to the plate for the White Socks. Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] Swinging a miss as he was late. Quickly in an 02 count. You’ve got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball. Put it in play somewhere. Then you got a chance. Next pitch in the dirt and the count is one and two. Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. Stop sign goes up at third. Runners at the corners. Nobody out. Well, he found himself behind in the count right there, but he didn’t give in. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Now, let’s see if they can string something together, make it a little more interesting. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Drew Rasmusen won’t go any further. They had a pretty good outing for him as he leaves with a nice lead. New pitcher when we get back. So, a lefty out of the pen, Joe Rock. He last pitched two days ago. Will Robertson will hit next. the other way and foul ball. That’s down and in. One ball, one strike. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. On the ground to the left. Camero toss to second. They get the out, but the run scores on the Twin Killing. First and third, nobody out. You’re thinking you’ve got it lined up for a pretty big inning right here. So that double play is pretty deflating. They get the run in, but now they’re starting all over. Two outs, space is empty. Digging in is the switch in outfielder Brooks Baldwin swing and a miss as that one was high. and one in the air right field low ranging after it and that is that. So they get one run on two base hits, no errors and nobody left on. Five innings complete. It’s the Rays five and the White Socks two back here on the south side. All set for the top of the six. Digging in Everson Pereira and the first pitch misses for ball one. swing and a high-fly ball left field. Robertson sizing this one up and there’s one down. Now batting rightielder Josh Low. Next to hit Josh Low. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Swing and a miss as he was out front. Ball one there. [Music] Just missed. There’s a swing and a drive way back there. Out of here. He leaves the yard to right. His second home run of the series and they boost their lead. It’s 6-2. You see how he stays square to the plate. He takes a breaking ball that’s away, gets around it, gets it up in the air, and hits a long home run. Not exactly the way that you teach it in the cage, but you’ll take the result. Now, the White Sox manager is out of the dugout and will make a move to the pen. Yo, Gomez done for the night. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. New pitcher on now, Tyler Alexander. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big erra. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. So, one out, nobody on. Here’s the catcher, Nick Forez. A strike out and a walk. That pitch in for a strike. 0 and one. One down. Base is empty. just missed with that back door breaking ball. If he gets a swing and miss or called strike, 02 count. Instead, it’s 1-1. Look for him to go back to that pitch later in this at bat. The 1-1 is fouled off. Next offering upstairs spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. [Music] Stays alive. Eighth pitch of the at bat coming up. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. And he’ll do it again. [Music] Five foul balls in this at bat so far and these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. Oh, a great back and forth in that at bat. He had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow Boogie found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there. I’ll tell you right now, I couldn’t have done it. Williams the batter now as he swings and misses for strike one. He’s a bullpen arm that keeps the ball in the ballpark, but obviously out of the bullpen you’re looking to limit home runs. Yeah. And that’s why he’s such a high leverage arm. Just doesn’t matter for him. He looks at attacking the zone and attacking hitters regardless of the situation. The O2 had a good eye there. Activity in the bullpen. Frasier Ellard appears to be getting ready and I’m sure he’s feeling some nerves. This would be his major league debut. Number 64, the hardth throwing right-hander up as well. Battling here as he fouls it away. swing and a highf fly ball left field. Robertson sizes this one up. He makes the grab. Out number two. Now batting designated hitter Chandler Simpson. Next is the designated hitter. He’s already homered in this game. Feels like it’s less common today that you see a guy like this. the speed component, the contact component, but lack of power. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. He just has to understand that his skill set is unique and he’s very valuable for any ball club. If he does that, he’ll play a long time in this league. That one’s in there and it’s a ball and a strike. [Music] Two outs and that one gets past the catcher and now a man into scoring position. You know, sometimes it takes a reliever a little time to get comfortable with the mound out there, especially when they come in trying to be nasty with every pitch they throw. Not exactly what they were looking for when they called him in though. We’ll see if he can settle down. Rudder at second. Two down on the ground right side. Maid handles, throws to first. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. And the Rays get one on a solo shot. Now a 62 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Bottom of the six. Now it’s the second baseman Chase Maid. And a strike in there. Tampa Bay’s bullpen with some action. Griffin Jax, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. He swings and hits a fly ball center field. One down. Now, that’s a tough play for the infielder ranging back into the outfield. There’s part of him that’s saying, “Hey, where you at, outfielder? Call me off.” But he stayed focused and made a nice catch right there. Now it’s the right fielder, Mike Tacman. Bowl for two in this one. Swinging a ground ball up the middle over to Diaz. Now only one out remaining. Now batting. Now the number two hitter, Kyle Teal. [Applause] Foul ball. Highf fly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. The White Socks down to their final strike. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Nice work out of the bullpen for that first MLB win. They turned to him when they didn’t have the lead. He kept things steady and he’s rewarded with the W. And your final six-2 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
