“The Chiefs are Not Done” – Rich Eisen Reacts to KC’s Week 1 Loss to the Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs are not done. They’re not done. They’re not done, guys. They’re not. Okay. I saw Patrick Mahomes on Friday on the YouTube game where he was as good as ever. He looked like the MVP Mahomes. That’s what I saw. I saw a team that was coming in with a Xavier worthy package and that went out the window three plays in. Saw that. Uh I saw a defense that wasn’t on the same page. That’s concerning. And they were barking at each other. You could see it throughout the game. They were barking at each other. And Drew Tranquil told Chris Jones after Chris Jones took an inside rush on Justin Herbert on the third and 14 where they were poised to get the ball back and hand it to Mahomes with less than two minutes to go and a chance to win it in Brazil. and he took an inside rush and as soon as Justin Herbert saw that out the gate he went. Drew Tranquil went right up to Chris Jones and you could read the lips telling to do your job. Now that’s something that we need to pay attention to. Now this is like family bickering as well. I get it. But they were just not on the same page defensively and Justin Herbert and Greg Roman and Jim Harbaugh and the and and the Chargers took advantage of it. But I saw Mahomes playing his head off. That fourth down throw going to his right, throwing it all the way across the field to his left to a wideopen Hollywood Brown was the eye Popper along with just the usual Mahomes flying in the air flip just as he was still legally able to forward pass it. You know, we see stuff like Josh Allen do this, so I understand people think that we fall all over Mahomes, but it’s worthy of it. And Xavier worthy. That’s the thing. When’s he coming back? Because Rasheed Rice is not walking through that door for another month. And if this is an offense that’s supposed to take the top of the defense off, um I don’t know. I mean, Taekwon Thornton’s the guy right now, spoken like a true Patriot fan. Yeah. Um and and Hollywood Brown and Juju Smith Schustster. Juju and you know, Kelsey who scored a touchdown didn’t didn’t look great other than that play in the game. Let’s be honest. So, it’s a daybyday designation from Andy Reed about Xavier. Andy Reid. The indication is the plan to rehab and try to play with a brace, said Andy Reid today rather than immediate surgery. Well, unfortunately for them, next up is the Philadelphia Eagles, who I imagine are waiting on pins and needles to hear if Jaylen Carter is available. And the Chiefs are just crossing their fingers and putting on their hope chest a little Hawk to a t-shirt. They don’t want him playing. Why wouldn’t they have known by now? This happened on Thursday. It’s now Monday. Like I don’t know. You got to see aside the the swab. I don’t know. They got a swab. All All I’m saying is that did not look great and the Chiefs still almost won it. And any plans they had of look, we’re just going to try and threaten the secondary and just speed burn here. That went out the window three plays into the game. They didn’t run it well either. But sometimes they just they just abandon it. They just like we’re not going to try to run. We’re not going to run. Yeah. When you got 15, it’s playing like he’s playing. He looked spry. He was running around. He looked good. He looked really good. He looked like his MVP year. I’m worried about everyone around him. Well, again, like Guju and Taekquin Thornton, that’s not going to get it done. Well, Rasheed Rice is coming back, right? But that’s still five weeks away. I understand that. But you don’t want to be two and three, you know, after those games. Again, like I said, the Chiefs look like a wild card team and the Chargers look like a division winner, but just be careful. It’s just one game. Oh, you right at me when you say that. Be careful. Because I know you talk about this windows closing where it’s closed. They I mean, they didn’t look like a title team, but it’s just week one. You don’t want to overreact to week one. Correct. I mean, it’s a pre preseason game really for most people. Uh the two things I’m concerned about is Xavier Worthy’s shoulder to who’s gonna who’s going to take the top of the defense off for Mahomes because that’s what they want to do. That’s what they want to do, you know, and they want to threaten the side that Quinion Mitchell’s not on next week. That’s what they want to do. Chiefs are Chiefs are home dogs against the Eagles. And I I understand why not. Why not? They got blown out by this team and they’re they’re the 0 and1 team, but all I know is that they still have a ton of, you know, they got a ton of championship caliber players and a top-notch coaching staff to figure it out. I’m just concerned about the discombobulation I would sometimes see on defense. Yeah. And then the arguing. There was a lot of talk at each other on that side of the ball that I was seeing on Friday. You said earlier that happens. It’s part of No, I know that. But not for all 60 minutes on the field. Herbert picked them apart, man. He did. And he played really well. And you look at him and one week in, he’s an he’s That was an MVP performance. Hey, you made it all the way to the end. Thanks for that.   3. Every chiefs fan in here is the exact reason why we went you guys to be bad. You hold on to the Mahomes, Reid, Kelsey argument. There is always a decline in championship teams, yours is due.

  4. The defense yelling at each other was a good thing. It shows they're holding each other accountable immediately in real time, not two days later in a team meeting.

  5. The chiefs almost won? Bro they were down ten and scored a last minute FG. But they were off target, no one is scared of them defensively. The field is better than them this year. Stop coping

  8. the fact that Mahomes has won so much since 2018, no one is gonna give him the benefit of the doubt because of him being clearly shorthanded. 2023 the WR room was average on paper and they had league leading drops, last season he lost is wr1, wr2 and rb2 for large portions of the season and kelce is not 2018-2022 kelce, this season he now starts the season without his wr1 and wr2. and if everyone was healthy that wr room is good at best. the run game has been average for the last season. yet mahomes is still expected to perform and no one gives af that he doesnt have much to work with. such is life though

  10. Sorry, Rich. Mahomes didn’t look MVP like. He looked like a QB looking ahead to his rematch against the Eagles and he got embarrassed by the Chargers. Herbert looked like the MVP.

  12. We certainly have work to do in order to improve. But in a few weeks when we have Worthy and Rice on the field it will be different. And yes it negatively impacted the team when Worthy was injured so they had to make adjustments and they never fully recovered.

    Also, as a general point, why is the NFL having an opening game against a division opponent abroad? I’m sure it was just as annoying for the Chargers as the Chiefs but that is a bit ridiculous.

  21. Vets call each other out even if its a vet to vet. It's a good thing IMHO. Mahomes played out of this mind but the D kinda sucked. Spags D many times takes like 4 to 6 weeks to become what they will be. I don't want to take away from what the Chargers did they got the W.

  29. The running game is trash. I'm so tired of watching Pacheco and Hunt run up the middle for two yards and falling down. The short yardage stuff has been a problem for years too

  32. I’m a lifelong chiefs fan, former season ticket holder, so understand I say this not really giving two left nuts about the other teams in the division. The Chiefs earned every bit of that loss. It wasn’t just the last two minutes. It was the mental mistakes, missed assignments, wrong routes run, penalties that killed momentum and rhythm. That said, it took an outstanding performance by the Chargers to squeek out a win that almost wasn’t. Chargers gonna Charger they play great in the first eight weeks, but then implode when the cold hits. Raiders got 1 win over a team they should beat that hasn’t been mediocre since Brady left, and the Broncos are same song different verse but Henry left for Baltimore. So a damaged, and out of sync Chiefs lost by less than 1 score to Chargers giving their best. Sounds like trouble for the haters to me.
