🔴LIVE 🔴Cincinnati Reds VS San Diego Padres /September 09 /MLB THE SHOW 25
We’ve got baseball on the show. It’s the Cincinnati Reds and the San Diego Padres’s. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. Just about set. And on the mound now, Dylan Cease and Singy. That may be his name, but the strikeout is his game. Well, Boo, I can tell you’ve been working on that one. But yes, you are right. This guy strike out per nine over 11. I mean, that’s just getting it done. There are a lot of strikeouts in that other lineup. And when you look at what he’s able to do, man, it’s going to be a fun one to watch today. TJ Fredel leading things off and takes the strike. First pitch 640. [Applause] That’s off the mark now. One and two. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two, don’t miss in the zone. This one swung on and hit well way back there. Going gone. The first batter of the game leaves the yard. The Reds score first. It’s one- nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Oh, you got to love a game that brings some action from the jump. And at the plate, he was looking for a pitch to absolutely drive. And you know, leadoff hitters aren’t up there anymore just working the count, trying to get on. They’re looking to make some noise and do some damage. And first offering is fouled off. [Music] Line drive caught. [Applause] Here’s the lineup for the Reds. This is an offense, Chris, that’s having a hard time scoring runs right now. Yeah, sometimes things just aren’t going to click. And unfortunately, what happens is players press, they try to do a little bit more, and they get out of their game. You got to let the game come to you. If you chase it, it’s going to run from you. So, this is a team that just needs to calm down, relax, and understand that they’re going to come out of this. Ellie Dea Cruz in the box with one away as he takes ball one. fast ball for a strike. Part of the order coming through now and with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. The shorts stop takes the ball. Sliced hard but fouled. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. That’s out number two. He had him out in front, which isn’t easy to do against a hitter like this. Known for using the entire field. Just couldn’t sit back long enough on that one. Austin Hayes at the plate now. That’s ball one. Two outs. Base is empty. And that drops in for a strike. That’s a bullet, but it goes foul. And a one-two swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. Merrill makes a nice running catch. One for the Reds on the homer. It’s an early one- nothing lead. Back here with my pal Singi and starting this one, Hunter Green. Base runners are tough to come by with him out there, Chris. Well, he brings into this one an excellent strikeout to walk ratio on the season. And when you consider the amount of swings and misses that he gets, and the fact that he’s not issuing free passes, that’s going to make him more economical in his pitch count, allow him to move into the middle and deeper part of ball games. So, we’ll see if that remains true in this one. Fernando Tatiz Jr., the leadoff batter as he swings through it for strike one. And that misses one and one. With Tatis at the plate, we’re looking at a player that is never going to be considered boring. He’s an electric player that manages to make plays most players wouldn’t consider trying. And he plays the game his own way. It’s a big reason why he’s considered such a fan favorite. And that one is lifted in the air. Lux gets under it, makes the catch, and there’s one away. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup and no doubt a big factor in this series so far. Freddy Fine. Well, Boo, there aren’t many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does. I mean, batting over 400 with runners in scoring position. Are you kidding me? I I know it’s not guaranteed or an automatic, but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not. Luis Arise in the box now. No balls in a strike. And there’s a foul ball. One out. Base is empty. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another the O2 and a swing and a miss. Beat him with a fast ball. With that kind of velocity, an elevated fast ball, even if it’s still in the strike zone, can be tough for hitters to get on top of. Here’s Manny Machado. Fast ball for a strike. fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. Two outs. Hard ground ball. Base knock. Love how he let that ball travel. Trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. So, a man at first. Ryan O’Harn comes up to hit and that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball one. And another ball. [Applause] [Music] That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. Machado leads off first with two down to the inning. Got him. That’s the third out. Inning over. Padres’s leave one. They’re down one- nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Now, the left fielder, Gavin Lux. Lux in his fifth season, hitting fifth in today’s lineup. A former first round pick back in 2016. Check swing called strike. The O2 and that one upstairs. Ball one. 02 pitch that far out of the zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this at bat and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. [Music] Pitch misses inside and the count is even. Two and two. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with next offering upstairs. Really good take especially with two strikes. He goes down looking. Oh man, just locked him up with that slider even though it caught a lot of the zone. And I think that tells you all you need to know about what he was looking for in the box. And it clearly was not that pitch. Number 16, the next to hit takes ball one. Last couple of pitches breaking balls away. I think he’s going to have to come firm inside to be able to open up that location if he wants to go back there later in this count. Man, 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a low-end fast ball for some pitchers. And now two and two. Good pitch right there. tied them up on the hands. If I’m out there on the bump, I’m going right back in there. And here it comes. Still two and two after the foul ball. One down, base is empty. And they’ll do it again. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. So he ends up with a hit after seeing a lot of pitches. That was a good at bat. Catcher Tyler Stevenson. And now the catcher comes up to him. Tyler Stevenson. Dylan. And that one is downstairs. Ball one. And a swing and a miss. There’s that slider man at first. One away. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Popped up foul territory behind a play. Has room and he makes the catch. Got the pitch that he wanted. Just a little bit quick. Front shoulder open. backside collapsed a little bit and the launch angle not where he needed it to be. Now batting Key Brian Hayes. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season. Chris that clips the inside corner for a strike and no one can get there. and out to a board. So digging in Matt Mlan. First pitch misses. Two on, two outs. Right through there for a strike. Dylan check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next in the dirt. That one ripped right center field. A dive and he can’t haul it in. One run across. Another scores two runs in on the play and they’re up by three. Nicely done. Brings home two. Put a pretty good jolt into that one. Great swing. Nice balance and weight transfer and he got it to drop in out there in the deep part of the field. So the lineup flips over. TJ Fredel the next to hit for the Reds. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Two outs and a runner, a third here in the top of the second. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. But they pick up a pair here. Both coming on this two-run triple. It’s now three nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Bottom half of inning number two. And now the DH Raone Lauraniano. Lauriano. Green back to work. That one at triple digits. A three-0 lead is great, but you can’t get too comfortable. Got to stay aggressive. Keep attacking hitters. Try to cruise through this ball game. Swing and a miss at 100 miles an hour. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Calls it in. And there’s one away. batting six leftielder. There’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. Singing. When the year’s over, he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. Misses off the inside. Ball one. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. Fast ball for a strike. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball two. And there’s a ball. [Applause] [Music] Foul ball and it remains a full count. Spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. Here comes a 3-2. That one is absolutely belted. Lux going back. It bangs off the Western Medal building and it’s gone. A home run. A solo shot. Home run number 20 on the year and they cut into the lead. It’s 3-1. He kept swinging and it paid off. Well, that was a battle, Boo. And he just kept taking his cuts. Finally squared one up. Well, he did a really nice job of letting that ball travel. Wasn’t too quick. He kept the shoulder square to home plate, which allows you to drive the ball to the opposite field with power. We see the power and the authority. And fortunately, he was lucky enough to keep it fair. Stepping in, Jackson Merrill. First pitch, doesn’t find the zone. And it’s fouled away. That one clips the outside corner. Now he’s in a one-two hole. One out. Base is empty and a run in. Bottom half of inning number two. [Music] Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. Stays alive. Now he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit. Try to move it around. Create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Goes down looking. So he gets the call and picks up the strikeout looking. Sometimes with a good hitter at the plate, he’ll be the one to get the benefit of the doubt if he lays off on a close pitch like that, but just not right there. Strike zone definitely expand a little bit with two strikes. Two down, base is empty. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. And the one and another ball check swing called strike. Now two balls in a strike and downstairs. That one finds the corner and now three and two. Man, that pitch was dotted. So much talent on display when this guy’s out there on the hill. Three and two. The pitch is outside and ball four. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Freddy Fine in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. Croninworth the runner at first with two gone. Runner on the go. up the middle throws to first in time and that is the third out of the inning. Padres’s draw closer on the long ball and this is now a 31 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back here at Petco Park onto the third inning and ready to hit now for Cincinnati, Noel V Marte. ripped on the ground to second in plenty of time to first lead off hitter gone in the third. Now batting short stop Ellie Dea Cruz in now for the Reds. Ellie Dea Cruz his first at bat was a strikeout. You can feel the extra attention on Ellie anytime he comes to the plate. This guy’s a player that keeps you on the edge of your seat because you don’t know what he’s going to do next. He can hit for power, steals bases, he can throw the ball 100 miles per hour across the infield. He’s electric. 0 and two now. Get out of here. A short stop. Takes a ball. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So, a man aboard now with one away. Up next for Cincinnati, the designated hitter, Austin. And now it’s Austin Hayes. Fly to center his first time. Close but called the ball. One and0. If it were an average catcher behind the plate, I’d say take second base. But this isn’t a catcher you want to run on. His quick release is unreal. That one hit to right. Tatis puts it away. Two down. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. And now it’s Gavin Lux. He’s 0 for one. [Music] It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are Ellie on the move. Strike in there. Safe. Da Cruz gets his first steal of the game. Chris’s wheels were the difference maker on that play. Just got in there. Yeah, with St. Cass’s help, we see his top speed on this stolen base. And that’s a big number. I mean, man, he really made his athleticism work for him on that one. Highf fly ball out to left field. Sheets has this one sized up. He makes the grab. And that is that. Reds leave one, but they still lead it 3-1. And we’re back. Bottom of the inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. to hit here. Oh, Tatis Jr. puts it in the air out towards left center. Fredo settles under it and makes the catch. One away. Now batting short stop. Luis Arise stands in. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Chris, baseball today, so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers, but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. The short stop takes a ball. Singi, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. If he’s doing damage. Ouch. That one got him. No, Boo. I’ll tell you firsthand, retired players, we miss a lot of things about playing the game in our playing days, but getting drilled by a pitch like that usually isn’t something we talk about. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. That misses the zone and it’s one and one. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. A rise at first one gone. Fights that one away. Still one and two. That one missed. Yeah. And I figured you would get Kate say into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Swing at a line drive. Ripped out into right center. That’s a base hit. Lead runner makes the turn at second. Headed for the plate. Oh, he throws it away. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. One out, runner at second. Next up is the cleanup spot for the Padres’s. Ryan O’Harn. And that one fouled off. [Applause] That’s inside. And now it’s even one and one. just missed. There you go. [Applause] That one way inside. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitter’s count. tying run in scoring position here in the last half of the third and that is out of play. Got him. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Well, even if you don’t feel great about it, you got to swing the bat with two strikes in this situation. You’ve got the tying run out there in scoring position. Just put the ball in play. Maybe something good will happen. It just didn’t look like he understood the situation. Lauriano comes up to hit. First pitch and he just misses. [Music] And another ball [Applause] now. A pop up on the infield and that ends the inning. Padres’s with a runscoring double. It’s now a 32 ball game. back here in San Diego. And now number 16. Number 16. First offering misses badly for ball one. I’ve gotten to call some incredible NLDDS games here at Petco Park between the Padres’s and their fierce rivals, the LA Dodgers. NLDS game four here in 22 when the Padres’s knocked off LA and then game four in 2024 when the Dodgers started their comeback and eventual run to the World Series. One of the great fan environments in baseball. Tosses to first. Leadoff hitter retired in the fourth. Though a wellthrown slider like that one can be tough to get in the air. Good downward break on that one. Tyler Stevenson the next to hit for the Reds. Popped out and foul ground. First time through. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. And there’s two down. Now batting third baseman Key Brian Hayes. Key Brian Hayes now at the plate one for one with a single so far. Taken high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Just missed. And that’s downstairs. Ball two. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. That one misses and now 3 and 0. Well, I would expect in this three 0 count you’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. That one finds the zone and the count is three and one. into center and a base hit and that keeps the inning going. Now batting next for Cincinnati, Matt Mlan, one for one. He tripled in his first trip. And that is downstairs. And that’s ball one. Hayes off of first with two away. The 1-1 hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. So, one left for Cincinnati and it remains a 3-2 ball game. Ready to go. Bottom four. Here’s the left fielder. Gavin Sheets. Sheets. Just missed. And a strike right through there. That one at triple digits. [Applause] So up next, Jackson Merrill caught looking his first time up. That catches the top part of the zone. That’s strike one. Ruer at first with no outs here. Inside at 100. One and one. just missed. Breaking ball in there for a strike with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. Ca strikes him out for the second time today. That’s about as nasty of a splitter as you’ll come across, especially in terms of movement. I mean, that thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment. If he keeps it down, it’s just so tough to put wood on. Stepping in for San Diego, Jake Croninworth walked his first time. This one chopped on the ground but foul. Let’s go. Breaking ball through there for a strike. [Music] Foul ball still 0 and two. Tying run is at first. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. [Music] Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Makes the grab. Two down. Now batting. Catcher. Freddy Fine. Next for the Padres’s, Freddy Fine. Grounded out his first time. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Well, he’s been incredibly efficient in this one. First pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch. Swing and this one’s blasted. It’s got a chance and it’s off the wall. Sheets around third now. A relay to the plate. The tag save. It’s 3-3. Well, we’re starting over again. All tied up. So close to blasting that one out of here the other way, but that’s very tough to do when you take on the outfield gap like that. Beautiful swing though. Let the ball get a little deep and drove it to the opposite field. Back to the top of the lineup. Fernando Tatiz Jr. The next up for the Padres’s Go for two in this one. Swinging a foul out of play. [Applause] Man on second. Two down. Fought off. Foul. Swung on belted. That’s back there and it hits the fence. The run comes in to score from second. It’s 43. Well, here we are. Third time through the order. And this is where we see the OPS jump up. Manager might have to go to the bullpen a little bit sooner than he anticipated. So runner at second, two down. And now the shorts stop Luis Araz. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Come on now. Brings it in. And that is that. But two runs for him and they jump ahead. We played four. It’s the Padres’s four and the Reds three. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the center fielder TJ Fredel. Cease back to work. Tosses to pitcher covering the bag. Quick recovery from the misplay pays off for the outielder Noel Marte. Now the number two hitter Noel V Marte. Marte measures 6 feet even 23 years old and he was born in the Dominican Republic. Fouled off left side. One down. Base is empty. That one to first and he handles it himself for the out. The offense needs to start showing some fight against this starter. He’s doing his thing out there. They’re going to have to push back at some point and make him work a little bit harder. And now Ellie Dea Cruz one for two. And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Music] misses just off the outside edge. I think that was a strike. This one smashed down the right field line. Tatis makes the grab and that’ll do it. And one, two, three go the Reds. They still trail it here. Four to three. Nick Martinez taking over on the mound. Still pretty early in the ball game, so this bullpit has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs, kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Here’s Manny Machado now. Third baseman, Netty Machado. [Music] Laser could be trouble around first, heading for two. And he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. Just so sound in his mechanics. hits against a firm front side and the hands just continue to carry through the middle of the field. Runner in scoring position, no outs. Ryan O’Harn will hit next. Bounding ball here. Rolls foul. You know, these Padres’s simply put are producing a lot of quality swings. They have five extra base hits on the stat sheet so far. And that tells me they’re seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well. With all those extra base hits, it’s easy to think we’re going to see that trend continue the rest of the game. They seem to be really locked in at the plate. Fast ball is outside. swing and a miss and he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat. Third time he struck out in this one and definitely an individual performance you want to flush. He just hasn’t looked very comfortable up there. Just one of those days, but when you’re still winning the ball game, at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W. Lauriano now at the plate as he swings through strike one [Music] way inside and that hit him. Gavin Sheets the next up for the Padres’s. He’s already homered in this game. [Applause] that one’s upstairs. Ball one. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. That pitch in for a strike. And one and one. That clips the corner in the air left field down the line and it stays fair. One runs in. Lauraniano rounds third headed for the plate. Across is the runner from first and they lead by three. Oh, a huge two RBI swing of the bat right there. Just a bloop hit behind third right there. And that’s a really tough play for a third baseman or shortstop to get to and the same for the left fielder. So, he just found a perfect place to drop that one in right there. And now the center fielder Jackson Merrill just off the inside edge. One ball, no strike. One out and a runner at second. Last half of inning number five. And that one off the outside edge. Struggled a little bit in this one. couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitters count at two and 0. The 20 is in for a strike. In today’s game, not that many fast ball counts, but hitters still in the back of their minds, they’re looking for one. Two change up call right there. Excellent pitch selection to go with. That’s down and in. And ball four, two aboard. Now batting second base. First and second, one out. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s. Well, the way these two teams have battled in this game, you know, you need more. Got to continue to add runs if you’re going to get out of here with a win. And that’s in for a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. Two on, one out. Grounds one to short. Oh, great stop. Throw to first in time. Got him. Great cat-like reflexes right there. lays out, knocks the ball down, and then fires with that rocket arm all the way across the diamond. Man, put this guy on the mound. Freddy Fine, the next up for the Padres’s. Drove it off the wall last time, just missed out on a home run. Base hit. One run is in. The throw in, but it’s offline. and it’s 83 gets the job done as he brings home a pair. Other than ripping one into the gap or blasting one over the wall, there aren’t a whole lot of hits that are more satisfying than a nice line drive into center field. So, that definitely felt good. Now, the Red’s manager is out of the dugout and will make a move to the pen. Nick Martinez departs and as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. They bring a young arm out of the bullpen in this spot number 78. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. In steps El Nino, Fernando Tatiz Jr. Off the mark there. And that is ball one. [Music] And another ball. Activity in the bullpen for the Reds. Scott Barlo up and throwing for Terry Francona. Richardson also getting ready. And there’s a ball. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. On the ground to third, they take the force out. Inning over. Although plenty of damage done. So, it’s four runs for him on three hits, no errors, and one left on base. Five innings complete. It’s the Padres’s eight and the Reds three. Back here at Petco Park. Start of the six, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And leading off, Austin Hayes. San Diego. That catches the zone for a strike. 0 and one. He swings and fouls one off. This is a very important inning here. After scoring all those runs, you want your pitcher to come out and just mow them down. The offense has worked hard. It’s shut down inning time. Lifted in the air right center field. Merrill on the move and there’s one down. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati, Gavin Lux. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. Ripped to third and picked on a hop. Machado throws to first in time. And that is out number two. Now batting number 16. Two outs. Base is empty. And now the first baseman. Warning track wall. And you can touch them all. Baseball man. He’ll circle the bases and they cut into the deficit. It’s 84. Wasn’t fooled on the first pitch at all. He squared it up right away. [Applause] There was a sinker up in the zone. It looked like it came out of the pitcher’s hand a little bit too early. Doesn’t have the velocity that that good for four seam fast does. And at the plate, he didn’t miss it. Base is empty with two away. Here’s the Red’s catcher, Tyler Stevenson. The other way. And that’s just foul. Two down, base is empty, but one run across. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Strike two. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen for San Diego. Nick Pavetta getting loose out there. Jacob also throwing hit on the ground to short. Arise zips it across and that is the inning. But not before they’re able to draw closer with this blast. It’s now an 84 score. You’re dialed into the show. And we’re back. Bottom of the six. So digging in now for San Diego. Luis Arazz. [Music] There’s a swing and a drive. It has the distance gone. He’ll touch them all. It’s his eighth home run of the year. And they tack on to their lead. It’s 94. Already playing with the lead. And now they’re celebrating a home run. They’re having a great time out there. [Applause] Buy some frustration out there on the mound right now. I mean, that ball was so close to going foul. Would have been a long strike, but instead batter gets rewarded. did a nice job of getting to the pitch and hitting it hard enough to get over the fence. Here’s Machado. First pitch misses. Fast for a strike. Well, I think that pitch surprised all of us. Right down the middle. Doesn’t get a swing. Not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that. So, a foul ball makes it one and two. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the bottom of the sixth. comes up empty as he chases that one in the dirt. Stevenson to first. Got him. One away on the strike out. Now batting first. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres’s, Ryan O’Harn. Three strikeouts already. He’s 0 for three. Diego. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Let’s go. Ball outside. Try to get him to chase on the change up that time. Well struck right field and that lands inside the party porch for a home run. Bottoms up. He sends it out of here. It’s their second home run of the inning and they add a run. It’s 104. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. And they’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat. Was very patient and it paid off. So one out, nobody on. Here’s Raone Lauraniano. [Applause] This one high in the air to left center. Fredel on the move to the gap. Hauls it in for the out. Oh, those can be pretty fun as an outfielder. got to put it into his highest gear and go a long way to track that one down. Nothing better than that. You feel like a wide receiver playing football. And it may be a long shot, but a triple here will give him the cycle. Hey, stay hot. Pulled hard, but it’s a foul ball. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. And ball one. Fouls it off. Still one and two in the air. Right field. Pretty well struck. That one is back onto the track and he makes the catch. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now a 104 score. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound, Nick Pavetta. Compared to some days, this is a pretty low leverage appearance for him. So, he should be fairly free and easy out there. Still have to keep yourself sharp and attack the strike zone. Now, the third baseman, Key Brian Hayes. He’s two for two. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike late with the swing there. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. And that one upstairs. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. Swanging a ground ball. Tosses across to first and the leadoff hitter set down to open the seventh. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Matt Mlan the next to hit for the Reds. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. So I can’t play around with him here. It’s a six-run lead at this point. Got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo shot. And a big swing and a miss. The Padres’s up big in this one here in the top half of inning number seven. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. batting just kept it simple. Played pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there was just no one there to knock it down. So digging in TJ Friedel. He’s already homered here in this one. And a good fast ball to start him off. That’s strike one. two. That one catches the corner for a strike. Mlan leads off first with one away. Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. Let’s go. That misses and a count one and two. Come on. That one missed. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. right side. Tatis under this one. Hauls it in for the out. Now batting right fielder Noel Marte. Noelv Marte the next to hit for the Reds. 0 for three in this one. That is upstairs for ball one. And the sweeper misses. Let’s go. swing and a hard hit grounder to third. Fair ball coming home. He will score. But when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. So runner at second, two down. Ellie Dea Cruz the next to hit for the Reds. One for three. Top of the zone for a called strike. Ball one there. Next one is off the play and it’s two and one. man at second. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout, but a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. It’s down to five at 105 now. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Brent Sudter. He’s been so good against lefties. So digging in, Jackson Merrill, a walk and a pair of strikeouts. I think when you contemplate him as a player, the first thing you think about is defense and you think about that great arm. I also think about the speed. If he can get on, that’s going to give one more thing for that pitcher to think about. Ground ball right side. Can’t glove it cleanly. Still manages a throw and they get him. The misplay made it a bit messy, but they clean things up for the out. Jake Cronin. Jake Croninworth the next up for the Padres’s. Come on. inside. Just missed. Sudter fills up the zone, forces contact. So, not a huge strikeout guy, but he’s going to make the hitters beat him. Doesn’t issue a lot of walks, so the pressure is really on the batter to make something happen. Late swing, fouled to the left. And although you like the fact that, you know, guy throws strikes, guy gets contact, and not always great contact, the fact that when you have runners on, if that ball’s in play, there’s still a good chance that a run gets pushed across, whether it’s earned or not and a ball even the count. Command in the zone is such a crucial part of it, right? You know, it’s not just throwing strikes, but it’s throwing quality strikes. It’s having quality misses as well. What’s a quality miss? missing just off the plate rather than over the plate. Two down, base is empty. Freddy Fine, the next up for the Padres’s. [Applause] Two down. Foul ball. Come on, Padres. And that one fouled off. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Swaying at a ball popped in the air and it stays fair. He went up there and got it with two strikes. I’m not going to leave this in the umpire’s hands. I’m going to be aggressive. It was in a location where he could get those arms extended that he loves to do. So, nice job right there coming back in that at bat. And the batter will be Fernando Tatis Jr. And first off is fouled off. Boo. The runner at first needs to be careful right here. He’s dealing with a pickoff artist on the mound. [Music] Two outs. Fast ball for a strike. And the count is 0 and two. And that one upstairs. Ball one. One ball, two strikes. Let’s go. That one not close. And the count is two and two. gets a piece and stays alive. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Just missing there and it’s three and two. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Tatis waits. Swinging a foul ball at the plate. They’ll do it again. gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Drilled in the air high and deep right field. That’s back there and it hops over the wall for an automatic double. This is a tough play for the offense to stomach. I mean, they did everything right, but the automatic double just ruined the hit and run. The runner had a great jump from first, and at the plate, really good contact. Just a little bit of bad luck robbed him of a run. Now at the plate, Luis Az. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Foul ball there. [Music] Two on, two outs. And that one fouled off. The shorts stop takes a ball. [Music] And it remains two and two. Two outs, two in scoring position here in the bottom of the seventh. That one ripped. That’s back there. And that one is out of here. Another homer. His second home run of the game. It’s 135. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop. And they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one. Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. [Applause] So, Singi, this is a little bit of a surprise. A guy known for line drives hits one over the fence. Well, if you’re a little too early, you’ll get some elevation in the ball to get out of the ballpark for him. It’s kind of a mistake. But you know what? When you have such a good approach every now and then you’re going to run into one. Here comes the skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Brent Sudter will depart and as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with the new pitcher after this break. Lion Richardson on the pitch here. And with the big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers and their numbers, but I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. Two outs, nobody on. Here’s the third baseman, Manny Machado. Fast for a strike. Pitch misses and the count is one and one. And that one is inside. Misses off the play. And now three and one. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. And he swings over the top there. swing in a ball hammered left field. That one carrying and it hits the fence and he’s got a double. His fourth hit. [Applause] Well, this one started with a bad jump, a bad read off of the bat. He ends up having to try to leap out of desperation. can’t come down with it and it turned into extra bases. Ryan O’Harn the next up for the Padres’s outside and that’s ball one. Man on second. Two down. Late on that fast ball. I think he was sitting off speed there on the ground and foul ballers. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate. It’s off the mark and he scores. And now it’s 14 to five. Now the DH for the Padres’s. Raone Lauriano [Applause] down the middle for a strike. 0 and one. That one missing inside. That one down the line and it goes just foul and a ball in two strikes and misses inside. That one the other way and foul ball. O’Harn leads off first with two down to the inning. Next offering misses and now it’s filled up. Three and two. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion so something in the gap should definitely score it. Battling here as he fouls it away. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Ninth pitch of the at bat do next. fouled off again and it remains three and two. So now two on and two outs. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wall. Very gritty. So first and second with two outs. Now the left fielder, Gavin Sheets. And that’s outside. Right through there for a strike. Two aboard, two outs. So a foul ball makes it one and two. [Applause] [Music] And a foul ball. He stays alive. Here’s a one-two swing and a miss. Struck him out. Inning ends and that stops the bleeding. So, nine batters come to the plate. Four of them score. Eighth inning coming up. Padres’s leaded 14 to five. Well, this game isn’t very close. Singy, let’s see if we got any messages from those tuning in today. I know we got some good stuff in there. All right, Syi in Ballpark Entertainment. You got a favorite mascot race? Yeah, I love what they do in DC with the former presidents. Somebody always gets tackled. They always get hurt. I know. And it’s just crazy. Imagine running around in those big bulky suits and somebody’s always going to go down in there at the knees. Do you remember when Tim Kirkin ran in the sausage race in Milwaukee? No, I didn’t see that one. Yeah. Yeah, they used one of the kidsiz ones. You know, this isn’t exactly a mascot race, but I love what they do in Atlanta with the freeze. Tatis makes the grab. One away. I wanted to race the freeze at one point. I don’t think my hamstrings could hold up for it now. I feel like five years ago you could have handled the freeze. It would have been fun and I would bait you into it and try and get you to train to race the freeze and it just never materialized. Yeah, I would I appreciate that that you had enough confidence in me that I could beat a guy who looks like he was going to the Olympic trials at some point or another. But yeah, it’s always a great thing to watch there at Truist Park. Would you have worn one of those bobsled outfits like the freeze wears? No, it would have been too a little too revealing for me at this age. I feel you. Now batting number 16. Two outs. Space is empty. And here’s the first baseman. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. And that’s outside. And it’s a ball and a strike. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. [Music] Foul ball still a one and two count. Two down. Dolman fights it off. He’ll see another swing and a miss and he chases that one in the dirt. That completes the strikeout and that’ll do it. This one pretty well decided at this point. Home half of inning number eight straight ahead. The Padres’s lead it 14 to five. Bottom of the eighth now. Here is Jackson Merrill. Jackson Merrill. Richardson back to work and first offering is fouled off. Here’s a rocket out to left. pulls it down and he makes the catch and a quick out number one. Not fooled at all right there. He was clearly all over it. But sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone, you’re looking for one of those bloop hits to get a knock. Sometimes Croninorth batting with one down takes a strike. Next offering is fouled back. That one outside and the count is one and two and he shatters his bat on the grounded to shore. Bare hand grab throw pulls him off the bag and he’s saved. Well, from the time you’re a little leager, you’re taught to hustle out of the box and give it a full sprint through the base, regardless of how you hit it. And he didn’t make great contact, but the effort was there and he earns the base hit. And now it’s going to be Freddy Fine in the dirt, but kept close. Not in time. He’s safe. So, a wild pitch allows the runner to advance. Can’t imagine he’s too happy with that one on the mound. Just one pitch after giving up the single, he basically turns it into a double [Applause] in the air left field. Lux gets under it, brings it in. Two away now. Now batting rightielder Fernando Tatis. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. Really nice double last time after a long battle at the plate. And that’s downstairs and outside. Runner at second. Two down here near the bottom half of the eighth inning. up the middle and he knocks it down. Still able to get it there in time. And even with his speed, they get the out. All set to start the ninth in this one. In now for the Reds, Tyler Stevenson. That’s in there. And that is strike one on the ground to short. Over to first. One up, one down. Now batting third base Hayes. Now the third baseman, Key Brian Hayes. And downstairs, base is empty, one away. You’re in the top of the ninth. Swing and a fly ball. Well struck left field. calls it in and there’s two away. Reds down to their final out. Here’s the second baseman, Matt Mlan. That one inside. Ball one. That’s inside. That one fouled off instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended. Tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in upstairs. And there’s the strike. Three to one count. Saying to himself, I’ve got to get a fast ball here. Just spins a get me over breaking ball to bring the count full. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. This could end it. Hard hit left side. Throw to first. Ball game. And the Padres’s slug their way to a win in this one. Well, as much action as there was in this one, really impressive performance from the bats on the winning side. They gave up quite a few runs, but they still blew them out of the water. They have to be feeling pretty good about themselves offensively right now. 145 is your final for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show. I’m John Shami saying so long.
