Vets vs. New Threats: Seattle Kraken Roster Shakeup? 🦑
So, what do the Seattle Kraken and the TV show The Challenge have in common? It might be vets versus new threats. You are Locked on Kraken, your daily podcast on the Seattle Kraken, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Hey to the hey. What do you say Seattle hockey fans? Welcome to another episode of Locked on Kraken. Part of the Locked On podcast network. We are bringing you your favorite team, the Seattle Kraken every single day. That’s right. We are back to five days a week. Erica L. Ayala here, your host of Locked Onraken. Been your host since the very beginning. And uh I am an accredited media member for Milano Cortina. They emailed me today about my flight over to Italy. I will be covering the women’s and men’s ice hockey tournaments at the Olympics. And we already know Philip Grubower is on his way. And um I want to let you know that we have a jam-packed week. Rookie camp starts this week. Then we have the full training camp that starts next week. And it’s going to be a good time. So, you’re going to want to stay locked on Kraken on our social media platforms. uh Joe Dabney who joined me on Thursday to talk about these absolutely sick uniforms. Uh we’ll be helping with social media. So, we’ll have a lot more content, hashtag content coming your way and I will let you know about all of those things. But on today’s episode, we are going to go over another athletic list. The best NHLers under the age of 23. How many are on the Kraken? How many are in the Pacific division? Then we are going to talk about vets versus new threats. With so many young people, including some that are on that best under the age of 23 or 23 and under, how are we constructing this roster? Like I have a lot of questions. And then we’re going to have some fun with a buy or sell. So if you’re watching on YouTube, you’ll probably see the sidebar, the rundown actually has vets versus new threats first. But I’m going to talk about this best of 23. This is another list from the uh folks over at the athletic. And again, this is going over um ranking the best NHL players and prospects under 23. Um and Cabrini and Bard are at the top of the list as a matter of fact in that order. We do know that Mlin Celibbrini is in the Pacific Division. Um, and he and Connor Baddard are actually in a tier of their own. There are three different tiers. Tier one is elite NHL player, and they are the only two in that tier. The next tier is tier 2 NHL Allstar. Leo Carlson in the Pacific Division. Leads that at number three overall on this list. He’s the first in this second tier. Again, NHL Allstar tier. Adam Fentili is there. Luke Hughes, I’m gonna Urikovski is there. Zeve Bullham, who I wanted the Kraken to pick, comes in at number eight, but he does not play for the Kraken. He plays for the Wild. Matthew Schaefer, he had a great story at the draft. Um, you know, we keep going here. Tier three, this is 11 and lower, a bubble NHL Allstar and top of the lineup player. And Dylan Gunther from the Utah Hockey, well, not the Utah Hockey Club anymore. Now they’re the Utah Mammoth. He comes in at right-wing at number 11. Logan Culie also from Utah at 12. Wyatt Johnson is there. Michael Misa is there. Sam Dixon is there. Those two, of course, in the Pacific Division playing with the Sharks. So already we’re at 15. No Seattle players, but plenty of Pacific Division talent. Again, this goes to something I’ve been saying since I started hosting the show that the Pacific Division is going to have highlevel talent because we’ve had low-level results historically, even before the Kraken got to the Pacific Division. I digress. Then we have Mason McTavish comes in at seven. At number 18 is your first Seattle Kraken player, a centerman drafted in the 20 21. That’s right. It is Mattie Beners coming in at 18 in this tier three, which again is bubble NHL All-Star. Mattie Beneers was voted an all-star. Unfortunately, he was in concussion protocol and did not get to go to the All-Star game that the Florida Panthers hosted a few years ago. Um, I guess that was it’s going on. We’re going into our fourth year already. Uh, because that was that was a it was before Toronto and Toronto was before the um, you know, the the Four Nations faceoff. So, yeah, it’s it’s a while. So, our first Seattle player comes in at three tier three, excuse me. Remember, tier one was super elite and only two players were there. Um, right behind Baneer is someone else who’s in the Pacific division. Also, a centerman plays for the San Jose Sharks or is in their organization. That’s Will Smith. And behind him is the second player from the Kraken organization. Will he be an NHLER this year? That’s another centerin Berkeley Ken and you best believe we’re going to talk about Ken in that vets versus new threats. Also, I don’t know. I mean, yes, I am employed by CBS Sports, but don’t let this sway you. I have been watching the challenge since it was just real road real world versus road rules. Okay, so I am a challenge vet as a as as a viewer. All right, but I do love watching the challenge. TJ Lavin I think is hilarious. Um but anyway, Berkeley Ken challenge for him. Can he make an NHL roster? We’ll talk about that. Um uh we have Caleb Des uh Denoier. I think that’s how you pronounce it. Do I have to practice, you know, someone uh got on me over on the women’s hockey report for my pronunciations and they I made an interesting comment which I can’t really argue against. They’re like, “How do you get the European names and then you just have name trouble pronouncing North American names?” That’s a great point and I really don’t have a good answer for you except that I over I overcompensate when I really feel like I’m not going to get the name right. So anyway, uh then we have tier four and this is a top of the lineup player, but not necessarily a bubble allstar. In tier four, the first player that we have, and I’m very curious, please let me know how you feel in the comments. Third in this tier, first from the Pacific division, who also happens to be from the Seattle Kraken, Shane Wright. So, he’s top he’s a top 25 player under the age of 23, but he’s not top tops when it comes to the Kraken prospects or again players under 23. How do y’all feel about that? How do y’all feel about that? I feel like Seattle Kraken fans are really rooting for Shane Wright. As am I. I think you all probably know that I probably agree with this as of right now. Now, upside and ceiling and who’s going to have a better season this year versus in three years. That might be a little different. I’m not sure about Berkeley Ken. Berkeley Ken is just on fire, right? In junior hockey. What will that look like given that he’s either going to have to come to the NHL or, you know, hang tight in juniors can’t play in the AHL this year because of his age. But Shane Wright at 25 in the fourth tier, which it for some though, I do want to just say this is a top of the lineup player. And I think this is another conversation when we talk about vets versus new threats. This is where things start getting a little funky with how the Seattle Kraken have built their roster or what we’re anticipating the roster will look like. So Shane Wright at 25, just keep that in in mind. Owen Power is on this list as well. William Ecklund, I want to focus more so on players that are in the Pacific Division or with Seattle. William Ecklund from the San Jose organization on this list at 28. Jake O’Brien, our guy at 29. He’ll be at rookie camp. Uh Zayn Perek uh on this list at 30 and uh let’s see uh who else is on this? Uh Becket Senaki I believe is how you pronounce that. Another name I did not practice so please do correct me. Becket comes in at 32. Good number for us. And Victor Ecklund is on this list. Roger McQueen from the Ducks rounds out tier number four. Uh, tier five, it goes on, is bubble top and middle of the lineup player. Uh, we don’t really see too many Pacific Division folks in this mix and no Seattle Kraken players in this mix of tier number six. So, top tier talent from the Seattle Kraken, which stands to what we’ve been hearing for the last several seasons. We have um some interesting players at center. All of our centermen are in that are on that list with Beneers, then Ken, then Shane Wright. So, I don’t know. Let me know how you feel about that. Um I think some fans are not going to like how that turned out. But that is the Athletic. That is their list. Again, the article and the list itself called or or is ranking the best NHL players and prospects under 23. Uh Corey Prawman wrote this up here uh I guess about a week ago. Yeah, almost almost exactly a week ago. So, what do you think about that list? Definitely go check it out over at The Athletic New York Times. I used to write for The Athletic. I also used to write for the New York Times before they merged. Um, so I I love that they’ve been able to keep Long Form alive with that merger. So definitely recommend that you check that out. Coming up though on on today’s episode again, vets versus new threats. So let’s talk about what did our last lineup look like? What are the available roster spots? And are there some names that I mentioned on the list from the athletic or even some other names in our pipeline that maybe can sneak up into some of those open spaces? We’ll talk about all of that and more on today’s episode of Locked on Kraken. Today’s episode of Locked on Kraken brought to you by our good friends over at FanDuel. We want to make sure we are growing this beautiful, beautiful audience. Such an engaging and captivating audience, especially on YouTube. I love reading the YouTube comments for the most part. I want to talk about this concept. Vets versus new threats. So, let’s talk about it. Vets versus new threats. Now, I gave you a list from The Athletic. We talked about it in the first segment again, ranking the best NHL player prospects under 23. We talked about the players in the Seattle Kraken. None of them made the the top tier, which is considered elite NHL player, but then again, only two players made that and that that uh top tier, and that was Mlin Celibbrini and Connor Baddard. But we did have some players that uh were in the the second and third tier. Matty Baneer is in tier number two uh 18th overall. So um you know not not bad there. And then we also had Berkeley Kaden came in at 20 in that second tier. The second tier was categorized just as or excuse me they were categorized in tier number three. Excuse me. Um, so we had two players in the top 20 and both of them fell into tier three. Just as a reminder, tier 2 was NHL Allstar tier and tier three bubble NHL All-Star and top of the lineup player. Again, Matty Baneers was officially named an all-star, though he did not participate in all-star activities, but love to see that he’s here and I I think he can be more than a bubble allstar. But we’ll talk about bold predictions and if we’re buying or selling another person’s predictions later on the show. So let’s first when we talk about vets versus new threats because there’s some young blood here. Matty Beneers doesn’t really count because he’s established himself. Now can he maintain and I think he can. I think he will maintain a top six for the Seattle Kraken for sure. Um, I know some people want to see Shane Wright and maybe think Shane Wright can usurp and topple Mattie B. We shall see. We shall see. We shall see. We’ll talk about why that’s going to be a little funky either way. But let’s first take a look at the lineup. This is the lineup, how the organization suited up for our last game against the LA Kings last year. So, I’m not doing an extensive. I just wanted to do a quick snapshot um because the lines change for a lot of different reasons. Uh all of the things um so what we have first is uh Jaden Schwarz, Mattie Baneer’s Capo Kako Ko and Beneers I’ve loved. Schwarz I think fits there pretty well. Um you know maybe there’s another lineup having him maybe with Eberly but I don’t want to get ahead of myself. Let’s just stick there. You know how I love the Triple J line. If you’re an OGer, you know how I feel about the Triple J line. But I digress. Schwarz, Beneers, and Kako. Then Tolvenin on the left side, Stevenson and Eberly, McCann, Shane Wright, Burkovski, Tai Cartier, John Hayden, and Mikey Eimon. We already know from this lineup, no Burakovski, no Eimon. So there you go. Vince Dunn with Larson. Riker Evans with Montour. Evans. Maybe we have to have a conversation about Riker Evans. And then Jamie Alexiak with Otavinan who we will see soon uh as one of our prospects and rookies coming to camp. Of course it was Joy Decord and Philip Grubower. So this was the game day lineup. Last game last season. As far as some of our new threats, I don’t think anyone’s really going to knock on the door when it comes to goalending. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be Decord and Grubower. So, we’re pretty much set there. When it comes to defense, Riker Evans might be someone that we have to keep an eye on when it comes to camp. I think he stalled out a little bit last season. Weren’t really finding he wasn’t finding a groove and so I don’t think it drops him out of the rotation altogether. But does that give some options and opportunity for someone else? And Vince Dunn, Adam Larson, and Jamie Alexiaak have all been a part of our offseason rumor mill. And so while I do expect all of them to start with the Seattle Kraken, when we get deeper into the season and we know what kind of team this is going to be, that might be an opportunity, but not one that presents itself straight out of camp or coming into camp. I just so I think our goalenders and our defense is pretty set. Now again, we already know we have two spots here in this bottom six when it comes to forwards, right wingers in particular. Now what I think is going to happen is that Tolvinin is going to come back to the right side. He’s technically listed as a right winger. So I think he can come back to the right side. Uh, you have to incorporate somehow. We have to incorporate Mason Marchman. We have to incorporate uh Frederick Goodro, another player that we are looking to maybe incorporate, not listed on that um under 23, but a new threat I think who had some time in the NHL last season, Yanni Newman. I really am curious where Yanni Newman ends up this season. And of course, there’s also Berkeley Ken. Will Berkeley Kton find his way onto this roster? Uh Josh Mahura and Ryan Lindren are some other players here to consider. Now again, what does that mean for maybe a player like Riker Evans, the their defenseman, of course. Um, so you know, I I think that when it comes to new threats, I think it’ll be interesting to see if Berkeley Ken gets some time on the wing because if he’s competing as a center, then, you know, right now the John Hayden spot I think is probably the most up for grabs. But here’s where I just want to have another conversation briefly with regard to Shane Wright. A lot of people want to see Shane Wright in that top six. I don’t think Mattie Beneers is going to fall. I just don’t. And we’ll talk about some predictions and if I’m buying or selling some predictions a little bit later. You know, I already feel 2025 year of beneers. I’m I’m trusting in it. Then that becomes Chandler Stevenson. Chandler Stevenson’s getting paid a lot of money to be a bottom six center. And so I I I don’t know that it is the fiscally responsible thing to do to have that money sitting in the bottom six or sitting on the bench, you know, or a healthy scratch overall. Now, performance-wise, that’s an interesting it’s an interesting notion, but that’s where you start looking at these contracts and it’s like if we don’t have flexibility with a guy that underperformed is, you know, on the quote unquote wrong side of 30 and is holding up Shane Wright from bumping to a a a 2C, is That is that a good contract? But now Jason Broll, even if he doesn’t like that, I mean, he was kind of a part of the team, right, that put that through. So, there’s that. I don’t know. I just think that Stevenson is a lock. I don’t think he’s going lower than a 2C. I’m not saying I like it. I’m just saying some things are what they are. Unfortunately, sometimes you have to deal with the hand you’ve been dealt. And that’s how I feel about this and a few things politically happening in this country right now. But I digress. I just don’t know that there’s much to be done there. I hope that I’m wrong. I hope there’s some wiggle room, flexibility there, conversations to be had. But that’s a massive contract that has it worked out. But I mean, it’s only year one of a sevenyear. A sevenyear. He locked that dude in for seven years, you know, and don’t think he’s easily moved, right? No trade, etc. So, that’s that’s going to be a little tough. I do think Tolvinin goes to the right. I’d like to see Schwarz, Eberly. Um, I mean, I would love to see Schwarz Deberly McCann, but I don’t think we put McCann at center when we could potentially give that spot to Berkeley Ken. If Ken doesn’t work out, then I think we do see McCann probably at center. He’s talked about he’ll play whatever position he just wants to win games. He wants to compete. So, that’s a little bit of flexibility there. I think Tai Cartier has to really have a breakout season if he wants to continue to be an NHLer. John Hayden, I think, is a little bit more of a two-way guy. And that Eimon spot, of course, is open. Um, but again, we have to make space for Mason Marchment. We have to make space for Frederick Gadro uh on the blue line. again, Lindrin signed a four-year contract um coming from the Rangers and uh Colorado or played with the Rangers in Colorado. I think that Riker Evans again, maybe we see his role change a little bit here, but are there are there too many vets on this team or do we have too many new threats and not enough spots reasonably that we can maneuver? I mean, this is this is kind of a difficult situation here again. Eimon Burkovski we know are out. I think Hayden Cartier those spots are open but that’s two that’s four spots for Ken Newman Marchment uh Gadro, you know. Um I feel like I’m I’m even missing folks here. I I I think it’s it’s super tight. And where does that give room for Shane Wright to move up? I don’t know that it does. So, vets versus new threats. I think, yes, it’s just something fun because I’ve been watching the challenge, but I think that could be the theme of the upcoming training camp and we start rookie camp this week, later this week. And again, make sure you’re following, if you’re not already, follow us on social media. We’re going to activate the Instagram account again, the Twitter account again. We are on Tik Tok. We of course are right here on YouTube. I I post on Blue Sky, Elenz08. Check me out. Um and we’re going to have some fun things recapping rookie camp. I will be there on day three of rookie camp. Technically, I’ll be there for day four. All of day four. H I’ll get in on day three, but I’ll be there in in in the flesh for day four. The good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise. Sab Uh, traveling mercies to all of those traveling soon. But, um, I I don’t know. Vets versus new threats. Do you want to see the young blood? Are you ready for the youth movement? Are you ready for the youth movement in earnest? What does that mean for, you know, some players like Riker Evans, Ty Kier? Is there room to maneuver Chandler Stevenson or is he kind of locked into a top six spot? Let me know in the comments. I want to know what you think about this because it’s it’s time. We got to start putting the rubber to the road as they say and the Kraken have a lot of decisions that they have to make and I’m hoping that we get a very competitive a very active camp and preeason. So, we really get a good look at some of these young guys. But coming up next, are we buying or selling these predictions about the Seattle Kraken? All right, vets versus new threats. I broke down why I think it’s a little bit difficult. I I I do think the Kraken need to move to the youths. We need to have the youth movement, but vets versus new threats in training camp. There are a lot of different factors that make it maybe a little more difficult or I should say perhaps more nuanced for the Seattle Kraken to make some decisions. And I’m very curious. I for one am very curious to see, you know, where they land when it comes to all of this. But there are folks already putting out some predictions. I haven’t made my big bad bold predictions yet. I know y’all know how I feel about Mattie veneers. Year of veneers. Jessica Campbell said it. Mattie veneers and Jessica Campbell have been working on that. That’s their mantra. And it’s still 2025. So year of veneers. And speaking of the year of veneers. All right, so we’re going to go to clutch points and they’re both predictions for the Seattle Kraken in 202526 NHL season. And I talked a little bit um about goalending when it comes to our um locked on NHL 100. I do think a goalender specifically Joey Dord has the best chance of being on that list out of all Kraken players that were nominated by yours truly. And this first prediction, Kraken number one goalie Joey Dord becomes a Vzna finalist. 9.06 save percentage uh was a dip from his 916 mark the year before his first effectively full year with an NHL workload. Um he clutch point Clutch Points, excuse me, believes that he will notch a 9/19 mark this season. um helping the Kraken win numerous games single-handedly. I mean, that doesn’t seem like a bold prediction to me, the single-handedly part. The American Net Minder will take the next step forward. He’ll garner some votes for VZ for the VZNA trophy given annually to the best goalender in the NHL. Not only will Dord become a Vzna finalist, but he’ll also help lead Seattle to I I think that what they meant to see is to the postseason for the second time in franchise history. And that’s I’m I I’m buying this one. I I do think Joey Decord can have a breakout year. I think he gets better and better. I’ve loved watching his YouTube channel and he’s focused on really getting himself active and motivated and getting things moving and so yeah, I’m I’m I’m with it. I’m with it. Now, the second part of the bold prediction, Kraken returned to postseason with a wildcard birth. Now, this is interesting, and I want to buy this, but I’m not sure that I am. Seattle has done quite a bit of work to get better from last year’s team. The clutch points talks about hiring Lane Lambert, getting winger Mason Marchman, Ryan Lingren, Frederick Guadro, that they have cap space. And so Francis and the front office, well, uh, okay, Francis, I guess he’s the president now, right? Francis and the front office, but it seems like Jason Botrol really is going to be making these moves. So, they want to see how good their roster is to start the season before they make moves. And like a lot of us have been talking about in the comments and that I have been expressing on the show, this is the Kraken that is is going to be a team that is going to make moves around closer to the trade deadline to help the roster according to this prediction reach the playoffs for the second time in franchise history. uh buying or selling. We’re going to do one more uh from Clutch uh points before we move on for um and get ready and set you up for tomorrow’s episode. Oh, okay. I don’t think we have enough now. I do think the Kraken are setting themselves up to make moves closer to the trade deadline, like right before the trade deadline, leading up to the trade deadline. Will those moves be fruitful? Have the Kraken done enough to make themselves nimble in that situation? You know what? I say hold fast, stay true, right? I’ll buy it. I’ll buy it. I I buy the promise of this. I do not think this roster as built as of today, September 8th, is making the the postseason, but I want to believe very much that this is a Kraken team that’s going to get motivated and get moving, even if it hurts my little Kraken podcasters heart. Um, because that does mean that some veterans are on their way out. But I think it’s time. You know, this is season five, folks. It’s we’re not fussing around anymore. It’s time, you know, to in the words of actually I don’t know what the characters names are from the movie the uh critically acclaimed uh animated movie Prince of Egypt. We got to play with the big boys now. You know what I’m saying? We got to play with the big boys. So, I’m going to buy this. This is money that I is very hypothetical obviously. Um, and this is my hypothetical money that I feel a little anxious about, but sometimes you got to live dangerously, right? I’m going to buy it. Matty Beneers takes next step towards stardom leads Kraken in points. Buying it. Year of veneers. And I think the year of veneers will extend to 2026. I believe it. I think he’s coming in laser sharp focused. I cannot wait to chat with Mattie B and see what his approach to this season is going to be. But you know me, I’ve said it. Year of veneers is 2025. It’s still 2025. And I think that if 2025 is the year of veneers and like this awakening, I think he’s going to grab it 100% in 2026. So, I’m buying this. There are a few more on here um that I thought were interesting, but I wanted to talk mostly about those. Let me know. Are you buying it or are you selling? Are you buying Joey Decord as a Vzna finalist? Buy or sell? One, two, three. Okay, you locked it. Lock it in. Lock it in. Kraken returned to postseason with a wild card birth. Buying or selling. One, two, three. All right, you locked it in. You locked it in. And the last one. Matty Beneers takes next step towards stardom and leads the Kraken in points. One, two, three. I feel like y’all are probably going to disagree with me on that one a little bit because I know there are a lot of people that think that it won’t be Mattie B, but maybe Shane Wright who takes the next step. I’m not mad either way. I believe in Mattie B. What does that mean for Jared McCann, who’s been our points leader, our scoring leader overall, our goalc scoring leader for several seasons now? Is he Is he a move? Is he a new Is he a move? I don’t know. Only time will tell. I can’t believe it. I I I I my heart says buy. My head says sell on the Kraken making the postseason. Even as a wild card, I said I said I’m buying it. So, I’m going with that for now. I reserve the right to change my to change my mind and I definitely want to hear what y’all think. We will talk a little bit more about this vets versus threats and what I think we need to see from a training camp to really push this roster through the paces so that we give everyone every opportunity to make the team while also giving the coaching staff and the executive office every opportunity to see what are the best elements that we can possibly put out on on the ice and best to what end to what end? What is the end goal here? Is it to be competitive or is it to just hang and fuss around until after the Olympics and then maybe see how we can cash in some of the uh the talent that we have. I don’t know. I don’t know. There’s a few different ways we can go. Either way, I know Kraken fans, you tell me in the in the comments all the time, you just want to see something more exciting. I think we need the blood flowing. Everything’s got to be moving. You know, we won’t we don’t want to be content to stay in the messy middle. And that might mean really mucking it up with the the young talent and giving them opportunities. But more so, I think it’s kind of hanging on until the trade deadline and then seeing what we can do from there because some of those contracts are just not they don’t give us the flexibility that I think we would need to go allin on a we’re rebuilding. But again, that’s what we’ve heard from executives that it’s not a rebuild. This is getting to a perennial playoff team quote as soon as possible end quote. So much uncertainty. We don’t know, but we’re getting closer to finding these answers out. Or at least hopefully we will. Well, we’ve been down this road before. We’ve got a new head coach, and so everything’s going to be a little new, and there will be a learning curve. But how steep, how sharp will that be? Or can this Kraken team find a way somehow to just pop out of that gate and get things going? We’ll find out. I’ll be in Seattle soon. Again, throughout the week, we’ll talk about how you can link up with me and Joe Dabney, who will also be in Seattle. And we’re going to towards the back end of the week, get into our Where Are They Now, the inaugural Seattle Kraken roster. Be kind to yourselves, be kind to one another, and always a reminder to hold fast, stay true, and loud and proud. We say, let’s go Kraken. I’ll catch you on the next episode. Peace out, everybody.

So Wright sits behind Stephenson for 6 more years? Yeah, that’s not gonna work. They can carry the contract with all the ELCs but they can’t let him dominate minutes
Botterill needs to clear some people out
The Stephenson contract was almost inexplicable at the time and now it’s simply bizarre. He makes no sense in this roster and the players being drafted don’t make much sense with him around either. Even if he bounces back, how many years of productivity does he reasonably have left? It’s not 6 years.
I think you need a mix of vets and new threats but they have to complement each other, not conflict.
