‘Green Light’ Host Chris Long on His Concern Level for the Detroit Lions | The Rich Eisen Show

And certainly week one games, we are all hunting and pecking to see if narratives we’ve been talking about for months have shown up with an actual game. And I’m wondering if the Lions missing their coordinators showed up. Like did we see that or is it something different? I think it showed up, but I think like as they’re making a scheme adjustment, I think I think Ben Johnson would have a hard time making this this adjustment. I think all of a sudden the offensive line looks really human and that that was such a a strength for them. Like the Eagles offensive line has never looked human. Not since I I’ve been there. Like they always look like the Monstars and they’re coached by one of the best coaches in the league. Obviously Detroit has Hank Freillley who’s a hell of a coach as well. Um you know I’m talking about Stout Stout in in Philly. But that interior three was so valuable to them and you know the way they kind of reset the the line of scrimmage they they kind of set the line of scrimmage in that pocket um so that Jared Goff who’s not the most mobile guy doesn’t feel that pressure up the middle and you know at times I’ve screwed this up where I’ve said hey Jared Goff isn’t great against pressure statistically he’s probably very good against pressure but he’s not great off platform and you know when I say versus pressure I’m talking about the pressure that moves Jared Goff off his platform and right now he’s making an adjustment to a new look in the pocket. Like all of a sudden the guards are in his lap, you know, and the Packers played really well in the middle. Um, but at times like even in the run game, they were backed up at the go on the goal line after taking a sack and they they let the the tackle run free and almost pick up a safety. I mean, like they’re having a hard time up front right now. It’s early. I I I I’m not saying they can’t figure it out. Um, but what you see when they get in these long, you know, third and longer situations, the tackles are really good in pass pro, but they’re not elite. Like I I’m I don’t I don’t I I don’t want to sound crazy like Penn is one of the best tackles in the league, but the the situation that Philly has, and this would frustrate me at times when people compare those two offensive lines. Philly has two all world tackles. Um, so when you get in these third and longer situations because you can’t run the ball as much. You looked at like 21 of their runs, like 15 of them got hit in the back field. That’s a crazy stat when you think about a Detroit offense. So I I want to give Morton some time. And I think Dan Campbell’s a hell of a football coach. It is a privilege to have to replace two of your coordinators. That means things are going well. This is something if Detroit and Brad Holmes and Dan are going to be there a long time, which I think they will, they’re going to have to do this again at some point. So, I I I would like to give them time. Um, I think the offensive line, the interior three really matters. There were times in the game when Jared was just dumping the ball when there was no pressure cuz he was sped up. And and Green Bay changes the picture in the secondary. So, that’s an extra layer of processing for a Jared Golf. Hey, you made it all the way to the end. Thanks for that. 1. The offensive line looked like dogshit. So did the defensive line. I don't see any coach being able to overcome that. Hard todo anything when your O-line is more fragile than wet toilet paper. If this is what we can expect in the future, they won't make the playoffs with their schedule.

  2. I appreciate Chris taking the time to point out the difference between the pressure stat and moved of platform stat. Most in the media just say pressure but as a fan I'll hear one say he's good and another say he's bad against pressure. So it's good to hear someone be precise about what they are talking about.

  3. It was really, really bad. They were flat, the lines on both sides looked really bad. Hutch didn't do anything. They were exposing Arnold in the secondary until he got hurt. At least with Ben we may have ran a Statue of Liberty or something and got in the endzone once. But looking like it's going to be a rough year. If it wasn't in-division I would also try to write it off.

  4. I am a Lions fan of the last 25 years. I have seen the bad teams. I have seen us lose coordinators not because they were poached but, because they realized it was a dead-end job. That is not what happened here and, frankly, we Detroit fans are not used to this. I get it, many of us have PTSD and trust issues because the team has been bad for so long that, now it feels like this nice shiny thing we finally build is being taken from us.

Love what Chris said here, give Morton time. Trust that Campbell made the right hires. This is the same man (along with Holmes) that brought this team from laughingstock, to a 3-win season, to a winning season (beating the Packers at Lambeau), to the NFC Championship, to the winningest season in franchise history. The same team that beat the Packers three years in a row AT LAMBEAU. The same man who has turned the team into such a juggernaut that the Packers had to burn 2 firsts to bring in Parsons.

So, am I worried. No. I am patient; I want at least three games before I start considering that "the coordinators arent right". Frankly, I will wait longer than that, after all when is the past time a Lions team had 3 straight winning seasons and were SB favorites in two of those years? Campbell and Holmes have more than earned that.

  5. The o- line is going through it's growing pains, Ratledge's first NFL game. He will learn and improve, Mahogany only a 2nd year player same for him. Glasgow had a off year last year he slid down on his performance at guard, gets thrown into the center position and he's adjusting right now. Really think they need to acquire a true center with some experience . Get Glasgow back at guard and platoon him with Mahogany or move Mahogany to Ratledge's spot and let Ratledge back up both Glasgow and Mahogany . If they keep the things unchanged we have to ride the storm out until they get cohesiveness as a unit. Think an experienced true center would settle this line down.

  6. Can everyone stop sugarcoating this! If JG was a little mobile, he would’ve been able to run all over GB, due to the looks they were giving him. JG is, Matt, Ryan, Alex Smith and Ryan Tannehill. All good QBs, but not mobile or athletic enough to win a SB!!!

  7. Yeah, Justin Rodgers was looking at the all 22 and the middle guys are just sort of deer in the headlights atm. The young guys especially are just screwing up their assignments. It's fixable with a rookie and a guy who had two previous starts under his belt. They need reps.

  8. Sorry but, the Lions looked BAD in every way here! This was NO Ben Johnson level performance, and it's O-line was lacking BIG-TIME! IMO they should have played the "starters" in the pre-season more because it looked like their FIRST day together for the first time and was lame AF! They just looked BAD, and not in a good way! MANY penalties and STUPID mistakes and ego's happing here. The Lions were completely lack-luster, confused, and deserved to lose here! I HOPE they improve, but I have NO confidence in these "new" coordinators or LACK of adapting to the situation!

  9. Too bad Holmes and Campbell didn’t know Ragnow was going to retire before Kevin Zeitler left I bet they would’ve found a way to re-sign him and then this wouldn’t be half the problem losing those two guys killed one of the best offensive lines in the whole league. They didn’t even look like top 20 against Green Bay. I will be patient, but you don’t replace two all pros with a rookie and a transplanted guard.
