The New Orleans Saints have a really, really important opportunity this weekend going up against what’s going to be a little bit of a beat up San Francisco 49ers team to impress because even a beatup San Francisco 49ers team would be a team that you would expect to still be better than this version of the New Orleans Saints. said, “I’m not coming out of here immediately trying to like hound on the New Orleans Saints or anything like that, but where the Saints are in their life cycle is behind the curve in terms of where a team like the San Francisco 49ers are, where they might actually be on the beginning of their downswing. So, as a team like the New Orleans Saints, who are on the beginning of their upswing, this could be a major opportunity for them to go out there and make a statement and show that they can hang tough with one of the best coached teams in the NFL. You’ve got Kyle Shanahan calling an innovative offense on one side. Robert Salah calling a fantastic defense over on the other side, but you have a door. You have a window here if you’re the New Orleans Saints because the San Francisco 49ers are dealing with some big injuries. Tight end George KD is out for this foreseeable future. He’s on injury reserve while they work on his hamstring injury. Right now, you’re looking at Brock Pury dealing with two injuries, a shoulder injury as well as a toe injury. with a toe injury being the biggest concern according to head coach Kyle Shanahan and then wide receiver Jawan Jennings who could do just about everything on a football field. Also waiting on some imaging at least at the time that I’m recording this to figure out what’s going on with him for his uh shoulder injury. But considering that they have brought Kendrick Bourne back to the team and signed chosen Anderson up from formerly Robbie Anderson up from the practice squad gives you a pretty good indication that the that the 49ers are preparing at least for the potential to be without uh Jawan Jennings for this game. And so New Orleans has a big- time opportunity, especially in the passing game where they stood tough and hung tough against a really good Arizona Cardinals team that has some big threats in the receiving game and Marvin Harrison Jr. who almost housed a 98-yard pass to be fair had it not been for that pass being a bit offtarget. But the Saints doing enough to disrupt that rhythm and disrupt that accuracy. Uh, but the Saints only allowing 130 passing yards up against the Arizona Cardinals, one of the best in the league in the opening week when it came to defending the pass. The issue for New Orleans or the challenge for New Orleans would be defending the run going up against Christian McCaffrey and the San Francisco 49ers. Uh, the Saints got a little lucky in a couple of occasions, but also did stand up tall up against the run when they could outside of that big 52 yard rush, which a missed tackle in the back field turned into. had they been able to make that tackle in the back field, we’d be talking about the uh New Orleans Saints run defense as being revitalized here early on in the season. But a lot of the new things that Brandon Staley implemented in this offense or excuse me in this defense have really helped the New Orleans Saints in their first showing up against that Arizona Cardinals offense which again is a talented one and perhaps most importantly packed one of the things that the New Orleans Saints have struggled with time in and time out year in and year out with the mobile quarterback side of it all. I think that I thought that the Saints hung pretty well when it came to that area. Were they perfect? No. But the idea wasn’t to be perfect. the idea was to be improved and I thought that the Saints showed that over the defensive side in their first game. Now they get the opportunity to go up against a hampered San Francisco 49ers team and make no doubt about it. It’s going to be short changed if the Saints do win this game because people are going to talk about well the injuries for San Francisco and things like that and I understand that. I get it. However, even if M. Jones is out there as the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, that’s going to be a feisty M. Jones out there ready to make a statement and ready to go out there. Nick and I spoke on our nof pod on Tuesday about exactly this idea and Nick brought up the idea that hey look like M. Jones could have that sort of um uh car wash experience I think was the analogy that he used of Sam Darnold where he like went through that San Francisco 49ers time and then came out a better quarterback on the back side of that. M. Jones has the opportunity to do exactly that. It might have the opportunity to put it out on the field for all we know on Sunday going up against the New Orleans Saints depending upon how Brock Perie, it sounds like his toe is the bigger issue, how his toe is doing throughout the practice week. But this is a real opportunity for New Orleans. They hung tight. Um, they fought. They showed toughness. They showed resilience up against the Arizona Cardinals. Now they get to go up against a team that even though might be hampered, even though might be short-handed, they’re going to go up against a team that has been one of the best coached teams in the league for some time, that has been to the Super Bowl twice in the last 6 years. And so the Saints effectively getting a chance to now see what they look like up against a different level of competition and a different level of competition going through a different area of the NFL life cycle. While the Arizona Cardinals are a team firmly within their upswing, right? Right? If you think about a circle and it will go counterclockwise with it, if you’re going on the right side of that circle and you’re going down, you’re kind of on your down swing, but then you have the chance as you eclipse around to the right or to the left side to where you can go up, right? You get an upward swing. I feel like car, excuse me, I feel like Arizona started their upward swing a couple years ago and is firmly within that category, right? That top left quadrant, if you will. whereas New Orleans is kind of right at the beginning of its upswing, changing from its downswing. And it feels like San Francisco is just starting to get into its downswing. So, they’re kind of diametrically opposed. They’re on opposite sides of the spectrum from one another. A team that was at the top and now is maybe starting to decline a little bit. A team that was at the bottom and is starting to climb its way up. Now, that is an opportunity for New Orleans to impress, to beat a household name or several household names and to go out there and if nothing else, even if they don’t win the game, which remember I chose the Saints to go 0 and4 for the first four games to get their first win up against the New York Giants. But this game up against San Francisco is looking more and more winnable by the day because of the injuries that San Francisco is dealing with. And I’ll be honest, because of the performance that the Saints had up against Arizona where they performed far better than I thought that they would going into that game. And so if they build on that and all of a sudden have the opportunity here to really hang with the San Francisco 49ers, no matter what it is they look like, no matter who’s in uniform, who’s not in uniform, that’s a positive thing for the New Orleans Saints, win or lose, it’s a positive thing if they hang in that game. And so I think that they have a real opportunity here to go out there and impress and a golden opportunity for the black and gold to maybe knock off the burgundy and gold or the red and gold, whatever they call themselves over in San Francisco and potentially even knock those guys off with a chance to really come out of here one and one and make a statement about what it means to be a young gritty fighting team. Doesn’t mean they’re going to go on a big run and knock off some top tier opponents, but it certainly shows you a lot of positivity in terms of what the outlook for the New Orleans Saints can look like with their trajectory moving forward. Coming up next, the New Orleans Saints are doing a lot of this with a lot of new things around them. And they stood out on tape. But this is the free, you know, on everything I do is is available for everybody. So, what I want to make sure that I do is still go through some of the all 22 notes that we can look at here uh as we dig in. So, some of the things that I noticed by going through the Saints film is you can see already a lot of the things that are different for this team. Um, let’s start off on the offensive side and there are a lot of new things for this team. I mean, the things that they kind of dialed up, Kell Moore did to try to find ways to maybe get the ball downfield. I talked about how maybe too conservative the Saints were about never really opening things up. And really, when you kind of watch the tape on it, they actually did. they they had some things available kind of in that second and third level for, you know, to see if a receiver would be able to open up down there. They did it a lot with tight ends as well. We’ll dive into that here in a little bit, but finding ways to try to get some routes downfield to, you know, dial up some big plays if they were available. And Arizona just did a really good job of taking it away. And so, you saw a lot of the passes come a little bit short of that 20 yardd line or 20 yards downfield. Uh we broke into this just a couple of days ago as we were taking a look at it. Um only five passes for Spencer Ratler were more than 20 yards downfield and during those there were only he only was able to complete ones. Arizona did a very good job of just covering that area and we knew that was going to be the case with that with that safety tandem in particular and in particular with Buddha Baker being such a disruptive player and so for New Orleans I still like that they had those things built in. It’s just that they weren’t able to take advantage of them. So, I don’t want to see them go away from that, right? Some of these concepts to where you’re trying to create the conflict defender to where you have the post going over the top, but then you also have, you know, an intermediate route going towards the out. Maybe it’s an out route or something like that. Kind of like a kind of a inverted dagger concept and you’re able to, you know, kind of try to put that safety in a bad position and make them choose. Come down to defend that out route. Well, then I’m going to go over the top to the post or to the deep route. you drop back to take away get more depth to take away that deep route. Well, then I feel really comfortable going to that out route and actually uh Spencer Rattler connected with I think it was one with Chris Alave and one with Rashid Shahed on those concepts where they were breaking towards the outside there and he was able to take advantage of those opportunities. He’s really good at hitting those kind of out routes and getting the ball where it needs to go with that. So, they played into that when they needed moments for him to kind of get back into a rhythm. Just hopefully going into this game up against the San Francisco 49ers, they’ll continue to dial up the opportunities for him to get from in a rhythm to hitting some shots downfield. So, I think that that’s what you’re going to be looking at. And the way that the Saints used their personnel was super super interesting. Rasheed Shahed, Chris, Brandon Cooks for a long time were the only receivers to touch the field in this game until Devon Vele came in later. The only other active wide receiver was Mason Typton who didn’t see the field at all. The Saints not doing a lot of heavy rotations on the offensive side of the football. So, it’s not a lot of the personnel group rotations that used to confuse some players back in the day with Shawn Peyton create some of those pre-nap issues. Now, the Saints still had pre- snap issues, but for different reasons because they were going up tempo, which also keeps a lot of your personnel out on the field as well. I liked the use of uptempo here. I would like to see the Saints continue to do that, but become more efficient in running it. Kell Moore said that they’re going to really be focusing on that over the course of this week and dedicating some time and resources to to uh kind of focusing on that. But the Saints played uh 73.9% of their reps on offense out of 11 personnel. That’s three wide receivers, one running back, one tight end. First number is the number of running backs. Second number is the number of tight ends. We saw this as a very very heavy 12 personnel team over the course of the past couple years. Some of that has to do with injury, right? When you lost both Chris Ave and Rashid Shahid before you’re halfway through the season last year, you’re probably going to end up using a lot more tight ends, don’t get me wrong. But New Orleans here had their full plethora of available or complement of available receivers and spent 90% of their time in 11 and 12 personnel, but 73.9% of the time in 11 personnel, which was fifth highest in the NFL following Monday Night Football and well above the average, nearly 20% above the average. So, we saw the Saints do that. that’s very new for them and living in that 11 personnel and finding ways to be able to kind of get things done there. And that 11 personnel gives you the chance to be able to take some shots because you have the opportunity there and available for you to be able to go out there and uh push that speed down the field and the Saints do have a lot of speed at that wide receiver room. Now, the run game on the other hand, we saw some new stuff there too based on last year where the Saints ran outside around 69% of the time. uh kind of a nice amount there, but going towards the outside of the tackles a ton last year, this year in this opening game, they were nearly 50/50 split in terms of outside run and inside run according to nextgen sat. So really promising to see that because I think that the more diverse your run game is, the tougher it is to defend it. Now Arizona did a good job adjusting to what the Saints did in the second half. The Saints are going to have to find ways to counteract that. So I thought they did a very good job though of varying things up inside, outside, man zone, doing all that. So really good stuff there. And the uh run rushing touchdown by Alvin Chimera was just beautifully drawn up um with guys like uh Talia Fuanga as well as Caesar Ruiz getting their getting kind of rotated around and getting their backs to the outside hip of Alvin Chimera to create this this tunnel with the offensive line. And then um Jawan Johnson with a great block down the field to keep him help him get to that third level. and then Alvin Chimero making that play one-on-one as he so often does to get into the end zone. So, excellent stuff there. On the defensive side, we saw the Saints top 10 in the NFL in cover three. So, they’ve kind of gone back and they have played in this game uh 77% of their snaps were in zone coverage. And so, they typically lived with about three high up there in one way or another. And they kind of did it in three different ways to where they either split a third of the field amongst the three deep defenders or they split half the field with two defenders and then the other half with one defender. This was the value of Julian Blackman. You can give him half the field and then split the other half the field. And so this is one of the reasons why you want one of those ball hawking guys. And so finding somebody that’s going to be ready to step into that place very quickly is going to be a challenge. I do think Yonas Sanker gives you the best versatility. I do think that Jordan Hen gives you the best deep coverage and so we’ll see which way the New Orleans Saints go with that, but it’s gonna be very, very interesting to watch. So, a lot of zone for the New Orleans Saints, a lot of 11 personnel for the New Orleans Saints as well over on the offensive side. And those were some of the big new things that we saw from New Orleans. I don’t want to stop there. I want to keep this moving because I want to dive into next tight ends being back in the New Orleans Saints offense. Joan Johnson had a very, very interesting scheme built for him. Let’s dive into that next as we continue on with today’s episode of Locked on Saints, part of Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Today’s episode of Locked on Saints is brought to you by friends over at FanDuel. The NFL season is here and FanDuel is making sure that you’re kicking off your 2025 season with a can’tmiss offer. Download the FanDuel app by visiting fanduel.com to get started. That’s fanduel.com to place your first $5 bet. Let’s get it. Had nation. And the New Orleans Saints finally are involving tight ends in their passing game. And they did it in a way that’s going to be very, very hard to ignore and certainly did not happen by accident. We highlighted that the New Orleans Saints played the fifth most 11 personnel or three wide receiver sets in the NFL on Sunday going up against the Arizona Cardinals. Despite that, tight end Jawan Johnson played about 99% of the snaps, had 11 targets, and came up with eight catches for 79 receiving yards, which by the way, both of those numbers, and really all three of those numbers, led the game, not just the Saints, but led the game. The tight end is back for the New Orleans Saints. And this is one of those big things that we expected to see with Kell Moore at the helm who does like to utilize tight ends and has consistently found ways to use specifically very athletic tight ends. You think about guys like uh Dallas Goddard in the past, Daltton Schultz, like they’ve had he’s had these really really athletic tight ends to go out there and go and make plays. Now he’s got another one in Jawan Johnson who’s a converted wide receiver. Now let me get this out of the way. I do know that a lot of people right now are down on Jawan Johnson because he didn’t come up with that catch at the end. But I want to give the Arizona Cardinal safety number 34 some props here. Um he made that play out there midair breaking that play up. The ball was where it needed to be. Jawan was where he needed to be. He went up there. He got it. He had it. Didn’t come down with it. And a lot of that is because of the play of that Arizona Cardinal safety. However, despite that, it doesn’t erase the fact that Jawan Johnson was probably the best offensive player on the field on Sunday, not named Derrick McCoy. And so, for the Saints, seeing him be able to go out there and make all of those plays that he did throughout the game and being a guy that Spencer Rattler has continued to be comfortable with is major. And as we watched this game and I went through and I notated things during the all 22 film review, what we found is that Jawan Johnson was not accidentally a part of this game plan. He was not somebody that was the third or fourth read that just happened to have the ball go his way after the other options weren’t open. There were a lot of times where he was the attention, like the player with the attention on him in this game. Let me give you a couple of examples numbers-wise of why we know that this is the case. Dwan Johnson in this game, single game up against the Arizona Cardinals ran 44 routes. That might not sound like a lot considering the amount of offensive reps that there were to go along go around. However, however, I want you to consider this. Going back to last year, 17 games played, 408 routes run, 24 routes per game. 24. He ran nearly twice as many routes in this game. Now there’s a couple of contextual reasons for that, right? No false tomorrow, no Taesm Hill a part of the game plan, but also you have Jack Stall, you have a good receiving tight end as a rookie and Maliki Mataval, but the Saints completely outnapped or allowed uh Jawan Johnson to completely outnap multiple times over both of those guys in this game. Jawan Johnson was the focus and he was a focus in the passing game. He ran routes at all three levels. He received targets at all three levels. He made catches at all three levels. This was a big part of the game plan. Let’s go a step further. We said that it was 11 targets in this game for Jawan Johnson. Well, you look back at last year, averaged around 3.8 targets per game. Now listen, I’m not the smartest guy around when it comes to math, but 11 is a lot more than three. It’s more than three times over three. That means that Jawan Johnson was absolutely a big part of this game plan. So, I’ll tell you this much. If you’re a fantasy football owner and you’re looking for a backup tight end to have on your team, and Jawan Johnson’s available in your league, he wasn’t mine. Go and get him. Go and get him now because he’s going to continue to be a part of this game plan. And I understand, I get it. I know the frustration. I understand all that, but even without that, he is still a valuable asset for this team. Even without that catch, he is still a valuable asset for this team, and he’s going to continue to be a valuable asset and a safety blanket for the quarterbacks, including, of course, right now Spencer Rler, who has always, always been very comfortable with Jawan Johnson. So, I cannot preach enough Jawan Johnson is 100% a part of what it is that this New Orleans Saints team is looking to do. Teams are going to be focused on him soon. And once that happens, it’s going to open up opportunities elsewhere, by the way. So, it’s a good thing that the Saints have all this speed on the perimeter because eventually Jawan Johnson’s going to become so much a part of this game plan that teams are going to end up keying in on that and it’s going to open up some opportunities on the outside while he’s running a seam or something like that. We saw Jawan Johnson taking, you know, taking snaps to where he’s in the back field. We saw screen passes that could go to either side. We saw tight end screens that were available for him or or options that were available for him. We saw his uh ability in the terms of crossing routes uh slants that he was running uh outs that he was running uh down the seam deep in the middle of the field. He was all over the place in terms of his route distribution. So absolutely a guy that’s worth paying attention to for New Orleans despite the the the not getting catching that touchdown at the end of the game. Still a massive massive opportunity ahead for Jawan Johnson. One of the reasons why I said it was going to be a breakout year for him is because Kell Moore wants to utilize him. And I think the contract told you that before the uh before the season. The way that he was treated over the course of the offseason definitely told you that too. And then now you look at the fact that he was out there and how much he was targeted compared to last year in just one game. Yeah, Jawan Johnson’s absolutely a part of Kell Moore’s vision here with the New Orleans Saints and a big part of their future. Um tight end Jack Stole added to the active roster on Tuesday. Uh that was a part of the roster moves that they made. They had waved Fidil Diggs. He’ll probably come back to the practice squad. The Saints though have added two practice squad players. Uh the yo-yo comes back up in both Jake coming back to the practice squad and Hunter Decker’s coming back to the practice squad as well. So we’ll continue to track all of the roster management moves that are happening with New Orleans. One of the things that we’re expecting upcoming is Julian Blackman going to injured reserve, probably Terrell Burgess coming up to the active roster. That would then open up a spot for Diggs to return to the team unless the Saints feel they need to go and find another tight uh excuse me, another safety uh to add to their numbers. The New Orleans Saints face a golden opportunity against a banged-up San Francisco 49ers squad. Despite injuries to key 49ers players (George Kittle and Brock Purdy), a Saints victory would still be significant given San Francisco’s coaching prowess and recent success.

New defensive strategies implemented by Brandon Staley helped the Saints contain the Arizona Cardinals’ talented offense. The defense showed improvement in pass coverage, allowing only 130 team passing yards. Kellen Moore’s offensive approach features more downfield passing and a shift to 11 personnel, with Juwan Johnson emerging as a key target.

Johnson’s breakout performance (11 targets, 8 catches, 79 yards) showcases his expanded role in the offense.

  1. Coach Kellen Moore has to utilize his fast weapons. Mesh routes, mesh routes, mesh routes and use the 1 , 2, punch of Karma and Kendre Miller, we should win

  2. Wait you’re giving credit to a safety for making a play he gets paid to make? Ok but you have to go the other way and get on a TE that did not do his job and make the play especially when it really counts. You can not count on Johnson at critical moments.

  3. If Juan Johnson cant ball out when the other team is NOT gameplanning against him, HE will absolutely NOT be a factor when they do!! Other teams are not allocating resources to an average to below average TE, they'll continue to gameplan against REAL threats like Chris Olave, Rasheed, & AK… And will give you Juan Johnson all day lets be real lol.

  4. when will people understand that Juwan Johnson IS our big bodied WR! which is why he led in targets. once we get Foster back and can run 12 personnel. this offense will flow even better.
