Cincinnati Reds at San Diego Padres LIVE MLB Postgame Show Chatterbox | Podcast, Recap, Highlights
Trace and Nick will be LIVE in the 9th inning.
The Cincinnati Reds (73-72, third in the NL Central) face the San Diego Padres (79-66, second in the NL West) tonight at Petco Park for the final game of their three-game series, with first pitch set for 8:40 p.m. EDT. This matchup marks the sixth meeting between the two teams this season, with the Reds holding a 3-2 edge in the series. After splitting the first two games, tonight’s contest will decide the series winner. Both teams are in the thick of playoff races, with the Padres vying for a top NL wild-card spot and the Reds clinging to postseason hopes. The Reds send left-hander Andrew Abbott (8-6, 2.88 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 130 strikeouts) to the mound. Abbott has been a reliable arm for Cincinnati, though his recent performances have been uneven. Since August, he’s posted a 5.14 ERA over six starts, including a rough outing against the Mets where he allowed five runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings. Right-handed hitters have hit for slightly more power against him, while lefties have a similar batting average but walk less frequently. The Reds’ pitching staff will need to navigate a potent Padres lineup that’s been hitting .269 over the last six games, racking up 31 hits and 18 runs in their past two contests. Cincinnati’s bullpen, which has struggled recently, allowing 20 runs over the last five games, could play a pivotal role if Abbott can’t go deep.
The Padres counter with right-hander Nick Pivetta (13-5, 2.85 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 172 strikeouts), who’s been a standout this season. Pivetta’s low WHIP and high strikeout numbers make him a formidable challenge for the Reds’ offense, which ranks ninth in the NL with 146 home runs, averaging 1.0 per game. San Diego’s pitching staff boasts a collective 3.66 ERA, third-best in the majors, giving them an edge in controlling games at home, where they hold a strong 44-26 record.
Offensively, the Padres are led by Luis Arraez, who’s hitting .285 with 29 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, and 54 RBI. Manny Machado has been a power threat with 33 doubles, 23 home runs, and 84 RBI while batting .278. Fernando Tatis Jr., despite some inconsistency, has 27 doubles, 20 home runs, and 83 walks, with a recent hot streak that includes hits in four straight games.
For the Reds, Elly De La Cruz leads the way with 19 home runs.
