Pat Murphy sounds off on Milwaukee Brewers get swept by Texas Rangers in 3-game series
You know, again, credit to Texas Rangers, how they’re playing. They’re on it. You can see their young players. They’re filling guys that, you know, it reminds me of of of us in a lot of ways in terms of they got every big hit. You know, um Burger was in TripleA earlier in the season and he hits two big homers. You know, we get 11 hits. We don’t get the timely two out hit very often, you know. Yeah, you can see it happening. You know, um Freddy, you know, gives up two long balls that, you know, again, um we haven’t had too many of these. We haven’t had too many of these in our I know in the last two years, this is the third time we’ve been swept, right? Yankees, Phillies, and Yankees on their own, Phillies on the road, Rangers on the road, you know, and yeah, it it it stinks. But I don’t think there’s any team in baseball that over, you know, 300 games has only been swept three times. So, still proud of our guys. I love our guys. It’s not lack of effort, guys. It’s not letting down. It’s it’s maybe the opposite. We’re exhausted and we’re beat up. We’re injured. And things did not go our way this week. You guys, you guys saw it. You know, that has to happen sometimes in baseball. I’m not saying it’s luck. I credit the Rangers, but they were they were better and and the and and they executed at the right times. We just didn’t and it it wasn’t like we were um not having good at bats. I mean, Mel Kelly threw the ball really really well uh after the first three hitters and then and then um you know, we had to battle. We got some unfortunate things happen, but it it just it’s the way it goes. The way that you guys started against Mel and even just getting 10 hits off of him. Did you like the pressure? Yeah, I mean that’s Yeah, there’s no question. We We were We were in every game. Um just like last year we got swept by the Phillies. We were in every game. Um and somehow this is going to help us. I don’t I don’t know how. It doesn’t feel like it right now. But it just feels a little bit snake bit. It feels a little bit like, wait a minute, where where’s our break? But you make your own breaks. Um, this team has done some incredible things. And um, but you know, there’s always so much you can take and we’re and we’re al we’re also young and we we still make some freshman mistakes. So, and the road trip for sure. You know, going three and three on the road trip. And you know, the Texas Rangers are playing scrappy baseball. They’re without Cory Seager, Marcus Simeon, and Adole Scarcia, three of their aircraft carriers, as I like to call them. And they just continued to add young players into their lineup and and they got the job done against the Brewers in this series. Unfortunately, the Brewers could not muster a win in this one. have to go ahead and clear it and then take care of business against the St. Louis Cardinals coming to town and the Angels. A little bit softer of a schedule coming up. However, you cannot take any major league team lightly, especially when you’re knocking on the door to what the Brewers are hoping to knock on the door with coming this October. Yeah, it’s it’s I mean, the Rangers probably playing the best baseball currently right now. They won 14 of 18, now only a half game behind in that last uh AL Wildard chase. And so you put your hottest pitcher out there and Freddy Peralta, Mel Kelly could almost say the same thing for the Rangers. He’s done well since being traded over. Uh but Freddy Peralta today had a chance to break a team record for scoreless inning streak. It got to uh 29 for him. Actually got to 30, but his pitch count been 113. A careerhigh in only five innings. Yeah, careerhigh. Two long innings. A 29 pitch third inning. It started with that one out single by Helman and then the walk to Wyatt Langford. That could have been strike three and then it would have been a strike him out, throw him out. A break again that did not go the Brewers way. And then this 46 could have got out of the inning in this situation as well, but Jock Peterson, one of the slowest runners in all of baseball. He was on it a little bit right there, was able to beat out the double play and then the b Freddy Peralta. saw that he kind of flinched and then uh he he tried to flinch and then he was he had to come set there and wasn’t able to do so. And then this was in the fifth. This was a 27 pitch inning that Jake Burger two-run home run. That was a line drive rocket on a change up that didn’t do a thing that hung in the middle of the zone was flat and Burger drove it out of here. So unfortunately Freddy Peralta with not a great start in today’s game. So, uh, he does register on the consecutive scoreless innings streak in franchise history, two innings shy of what Teddy Haggera did in 1987. Tough to do, especially as a starting pitcher when you’re out there uh, so often, but the Brew Crew can’t come up with uh, anything here today or in this series for that matter. Again, the start in this game gives you a lot of hope. You get your top two hitters hitting back-to-back home runs. That’s the seventh time that has happened so far here on the season. Ben, and and you’re feeling really good about yourself. Terra uh continues to hit the ball well right now. Man, you thought the Brewers were just going to run away with this game, especially after the first two hitters. Bryce Tang goes deep. That was on an O-2 pitch, a 91 mile cutter that Mel Kelly wanted to have back. And Bryce Terang deposits it into right center field. Enturio with an absolute line drive rocket shot out of here at 109 mph off the bat. That’s his 20th home run of the season, which is quite a feat for the young kid, Jackson Cheerio. But the Brewers just couldn’t do anything after that. Yep, indeed. Well, you mentioned quite a feat for Cheerio. Uh 20 home runs in each of his first two seasons. you remember he started uh last year at the the young age of 19 turned 20 as the season uh just got underway and uh check this out uh two consecutive 20 home run seasons before the age of 22. Jacksonio right there, Jean Carlos Stanton, Mike Trout, uh Price Harper, Carlos Kareah, Juan Sto, Ronald Dunia Jr. I mean it doesn’t get any better to keep company with these guys. So, this is elite elite uh company for sure. And if he steals two more bases, he would be the first player ever to go 2020 before the age of 22. So, uh those guys didn’t do it before the age of they got the 20 home runs, but they didn’t steal the 20 bases two seasons in a row. Let’s see if Jackson Cheerio uh can get that. I would advise actually to make sure that he keeps that hamstring healthy for the remainder of the season and not really worry about that. But we’re just talking about the elite company that this guy is in. He is he is a supreme talent right here in Jackson Cheerio. And quite often when you talk about no offense for the Brewers during that uh series, how the pitching got pummeled with home runs and the season obviously has completely changed since then. And obviously they’re in a spot right now where they just want to clinch the playoffs, clinch the division, and get this roster kind of straightened out a little bit too. Reese Hoskins returned yesterday. going to be used as a pinch hit or an off the bench. Uh Vinnie, we saw him today for the second time pinch hit and he came up with a big RBI single. Good for Ree. Yeah, and it was on a three- 0 pitch. So, I mean, that’s not easy to do. I mean, it’s easy to get big. We talked about that when Jake Bowers hit that three home three-run home run in the Pittsburgh series. It’s easy to kind of get big and jam yourself or ground out. And Reese Hoskins puts a really nice swing on this pitch right here. That’s his first hit since July 5th. Remember, he missed 58 games with that with that ligament injury in his in his thumb. It’s actually the UCL ligament that attaches here. And so, good to see him back healthy. Good to see him continue to not swing at balls. He’s really good at that. That’s why he has been an asset to this Brewers lineup because he’s part of that group that just makes a pitcher work. Got to a three-0 count, didn’t expand the zone, and then got a pitch he could handle on a three-0 pitch, and then drove in the run. you thought that the Brewers were maybe going to come back into this one just that was all that they could muster was the three runs in this game. I think too if you think big picture with Ree, you see him in a playoff situation doing exactly what he did today. He’s had so much success in the postseason of course with Philadelphia helping them win a World Series and contributing mightily there as well. So we’ll see how this all pans out. Brewers looking for a win when they come back home.
