Carey Price Traded To The Sharks… Now What? | SDP

Let’s talk a little bit of uh let’s talk a little Carrie Price here because he was traded. Yep. And what I don’t understand about this particular trade because it was to the uh friend of the show San Jose Sharks, the entire organization. Friend of the show. Yes. Um I don’t understand it. So Carrie Price’s contract was moved to the Sharks for Ganon Lorac. Now Ganon Lorac is not going to play again, it looks like. No. Carrie Price we know is not going to play again. Carrie put out that thing this weekend. He’s like I’m still a HAB for life. but he had a teal Habs jersey, which I thought was hilarious. Yes. Um, why why did the Montreal Canadians do this deal? Why did the San Jose Sharks do this deal? Because there was a fifth round pick in next year’s draft included in this and very little real money that actually has to be paid out by the San Jose Sharks. Why take on this cap space? Why chew it up? Why bother? H Yeah, you do it. Okay. So, it seemed like you wanted to do it. the the San Jose Sharks do this one. The the real money thing, it matters. The bonus that was paid to Carrie Price a couple weeks ago um makes things easier with the money because he was owed about 7.5 He was owed $7.5 million in actual payroll this season to be paid. 5 million of that has been paid out already. So that uh 5.5 actually was paid out in bonus. So there’s $2 million left that needs to be owed to him. And that $2 million, 60% is covered by insurance. So the actual money that the Sharks have to pay carry price is less than a million dollars around 800 grand. And it’s a bottom it’s a it’s a bottom pairing or bottom pairing right defense. It doesn’t matter. That’s a it’s a accounting error. The amount of money they have to pay is actually even less than that. Okay. Because Genanon Lorac makes money. Oh, right. So they they the amount of money he makes from Puck Pedia. I believe his base salary is 775,000. There you go. His cap hit is higher than that because he has a performance bonus which I assume he’s not going to hit on account of he’s not going to play. So you’re also saving the money on Gan Lorac’s payout. So essentially it’s $0 that the Sharks have to pay Carrie Price this season. And the Sharks need that $10.5 million on their cap hit so that they can trade players off of their roster this season. They need to hit the floor. Oh, so they can maint if if the Sharks want to go throughout the season and move some of these veteran pieces off of their roster and dump salary and just get prospects and draft picks back. Now they have that ability without threatening to go under the $70 million cap cap floor. Is it 70 million now? at 70 million which is quite high for a team that doesn’t want to employ guys this season. They already have low mature for two more years at 8 million bucks though in that too. So that’ll be $18 million in cap, right? So they’re still like there’s guys there. They need a move and they need to guarantee like we’re not going to threaten to be under that $70 million. So from the Sharks perspective, they need that. They want that. So that’s why they acquired Carrie Price in Montreal. They’re dumping that so that they can acrue cap space because the Sharks are going to be under the cap no matter what. Go ahead. I Well, no, no, keep going. Keep going. I’ve got it here. Oh, I was gonna say that the the Montreal Canadians need to have the ability to acrue cap space this upcoming season, which is something they haven’t been able to do since the 2022 season when this happened. So, every single year they’re going into the season with their hands tied behind their back because their cap is strapped once they get to the trade deadline. In this year, they’re going to have $20 million of a crude cap space depending on how everything plays out. That’s what’s uh the kind of earmarked by Puckedia that they’ll have at the deadline. And that allows them to also not be in bonus overage over every single year because when you have Carrie Price’s deal on your books, you start the year above the cap in LTIR. But you don’t get that benefit if you have bonus overages for last year. They’re actually paying 1.75 million in overages this season. because they spent the entire season over the cap. So every time somebody hits something, they’re guaranteed guaranteed to have that cap hit on their cap the following season because they’re already over the season and they can’t go more over that season. That is a great breakdown. It makes a lot of sense for Montreal to dump this this uh cap into when you became our capologist, but like you’re really good at the cap’s fun. You’re the fifth. The cap the cap is fun. Yeah, except uh it’s like it’s like when we talk to CJ and he’s like, “Oh, yeah. I read the CBA.” I’m like, “You read the CBA?” You don’t just like know tidbits. Reading reading War in Peace. Uh uh Okay. So, here are the here’s a list of guys that are uh UFAS after this season on the San Jose roster. Okay. And by the way, uh according to Puckedia, the Sharks still have $9.2 million in projected space now. And by the way, that gets bigger and bigger and bigger towards trade deadline. So, they’ll have like a hundred million dollars available trade deadline. That would be insane. Uh, but Alex Wenberg, uh, 5 million bucks. He’s on the last year of his deal. Worth mentioning Bar Clay Gudro. I don’t think anyone’s taking this deal, but he he has two years left at 3.6 million. Oh, you’re nuts. At the trade deadline for like a couple playoff runs. Yeah, he he feels like a true living guy. Actually, somebody’s going to convince themselves like, oh, he still got it. Yeah. You know, he had it the last time he was in the playoffs, which was two years ago. That’s a long time. That’s a long time ago. Uh Jeff Skinner is a San Jose Shark. Oh man. 3 million bucks. That’s the second year of the deal he signed with the Oilers. I forget how he ended up there, but uh I think there was a trade. No, he was No, cuz he was on He was in the I have no idea. You don’t have to think of the deal. I’m on it. Just click his name out. I know. That’s what I’m on it. That’s why Steve’s like I’m on it. Literally. Just click his name. I did. I did. And then his transactions are there. Signed a one-year contract. Oh, he Okay, so he only signed one year in Edmonton and then he signed with San Jose this summer. Three million bucks. Uh Jeff Skinner, as I mentioned, three million bucks. Uh Adam Goddet’s got two years at 2 mill. Carl Grundstrom, leaf great, 1.8 million. He’s a UFA. Ryan Reeves, leaf great, 1.35. He’s got a year left. And you have to think with Ryan, it’s probably his last year. Uh Dandria and Kirav are both RFAS. I would think both will resign. They got Yeah, they did. Okay. Uh, Nick Nick Lety is a San Jose Shark. Okay. I don’t remember the deal. 4 million bucks. I’m lying. I don’t remember this happening. Uh, I don’t remember. He signed uh he signed that contract in St. Louis and then was traded there this off season. I bet uh John Clingberg signed with the San Jose man. 4 million bucks. That’s the same thing as like the Quenville head coaching. Yeah. You’re like what? We’re in Clayberg. Oh yeah. Season that. Oh yeah. July Mario Ferraro 3.25 million. Now he’s a valuable piece. I would think the Sharks are going to hang on. I think I think like the opportunity was last trade deadline cuz there’s rumors that they’re looking to move him and then they’re like, “No, let’s just keep him.” So I think he’s there to stay. Yeah, cuz you might need a Mario Ferrerero. Yeah. Uh he might be good in a year. Demetri Orlov is also there. He was traded uh or no, he signed there. He had a brutal playoffs with Carolina, but has been a pretty steady defenseman. Full no move this year and then a partial next at 6.5 million bucks and he’s 34. Uh uh Timothy Lilligrin is in the second year of the two-year deal. He signed with the Leafs that never played on 3 million bucks. Uh he’s in UFA for his first time next year. Vinnie Dear is a San Jose Shark as well. The whole roster is Oh yeah. Holy cow. and he’s a UFA 2 million bucks. Shakira Muka Madullan uh 1 million bucks this year. I believe he just signed that extension. He’s an RFA. And then Jack Thompson is the other one that’s listed. He’s 23 R. Noted guy who scored against the Leafs. Yeah, he did. He sure did. Uh and then in net, just because I want to complete the circle here, uh Nadulkovich is also a San Jose Shark. Oh yeah. Oh man. and Yorus Slav Ascarov who spent a lot of last year injured unfortunately and I think probably starts the season uh in the AHL with the Barracuda to make sure but they they only have Carrie Price, Alexandovich and Yaroslav. No, I think he’s in the NHL this year. Okay, there you go. Yeah. On the Montreal side of things, the the cap space like that’s the big driving factor now that you have $4.5 million in actual cap dollars and you don’t have to do your funny math every time you’re trying to do something. And that fifth round pick that they gave up means so little to the Canadians. I know this season in this upcoming draft, they have a first, two seconds, a third, two fourths, a six, and two sevens. They don’t need it. They didn’t they’re not going to think about that ever again. Yeah. If they want like there’s going there’s about to be a million players on waiverss. Like they could steal some of them. They could go now do those things. Yeah. Like I I was saying, you know, some there’s going to be someone who’s going to do something interesting during training camp. The Habs are a top five candidate now. And interesting now with the San Jose Sharks. 10% of their cap is in retention and buyout and cap charges. So 7% of it is there’s three buyouts on their roster. One of them actually tweeted about it this weekend and it was very funny. Did you see that? Yeah. Mark Edward Blic, who was a Sharks legend, said, “Ah, Carrie, we just missed each other.” That was funny. Very funny. Uh, 4.666667 million dollars. Uh, and Marty Jones. Uh, I don’t I didn’t know Martin Jones is on a bio for this year and next at 16667. Wow. This year and next. And then Nikolai Kishnov. Oh, Nhav. Nhav. Yes. Yes. Yes. You’re saying yes. Yes. Yes. Like I’ve heard of this person. Oh, I have. I have. Everybody knows when that happened. Big, I think, right-handed defenseman. He’s a lefty. Sorry. Oh, well, he had a guess wrong. He had a good shot. No, no, he had a good start to his career. Kind of petered out. Okay. And then So, why is he Why did he get bought out? Well, he petered. Because he petered out. He didn’t nicolai. He petered. Uh, and then retained. Name the two guys retained. Carlson. Yes. That’s a How many more years? Oh my god. this five. Well, it’s only the remainder of his contract. How many years does Eric have? Two. Yep. Okay. 1.5 million bucks. Who’s the other guy? Uh, he was a shark for a long time. He was uh captain. What? Am I right? Wait, you know the answer? Yeah. Yeah. It’s Stephen. Guess it. Guess it. He was a captain for a long time. No, no, no. He wasn’t captain. He wasn’t captain. He was wear He did wear an A, but he was wearing a captain cuz Logan Couture was the captain. Yeah. I was like, that’s like three guys. Uh uh freaking help me. Who? Trade deadline. Bob McKenzie pulls out it pulls up to the TSN desk and goes wham. Here’s the deal of the deadline two years ago. Two, not last deadline, but the deadline before the Sharks. I have no idea. Deal of the deadline. deal of the deadline. I’m blanking, man. Tomas Hurdle. A son of a gun. And uh they have to pay him 38 3875 until 2930, but they they got a they got a lot a lot back for that. So, it’s pretty solid. So, you’re saying the rebuild might last a bit? I Well, listen, I look at the roster and they’ve got, you know, Will Smith and Mlin on the second year of their ELC’s. William Ecklan’s going to need an extension at some point. Oh, no. He got one. 5.6 6 million which kicks in next year. That was recent. Yeah. Um but like I look at that and I’m like, “Okay, well uh there’s your there’s most of your forwards.” Um and Misa Misa. Yeah, dude. They’re going to be so absurd. And listen, if they’re bad again this year, they could add McKenna, man. Man, I think they’re trying. They They are trying. I have a lot of faith in what they’re doing. You got to be careful about tearing it down too far. Well, I think the difference about we always use the tearing it down too far and we go the Buffalo Sabres, the Sabres, but sort of now the Blackhawks though. Okay. But look at how both of those franchises are run. Yes. The Blackhawks used to be a first- rate organization. I think the Sabres with different ownership would be great by now. Yeah. With honest to goodness the same people in the organization like same players. Well, there’s like four people that work there. That’s the first problem. Yeah. Yeah. You need a different GM, too. You can’t just have the GM who’s the best friends with the owner and just gets to run things in forever. It’s like the 80s Leaf. That’s how they ran things. Literally, it’s like, oh, this guy can get along with this weird owner. I I uh somebody said to us like a while ago, I was like, you know, Kevin was nice guy, but not a GM. At least not yet. If they got to add nice guy to your resume. Listen, we’ve all had to add to our resume. Yeah, because there wasn’t much on it. Mhm. That’s Before I sue you, at least I want to tell you that you’re a nice person. The best thing Steve’s ever come up with is that Kevin Adams is Smithers. That’s an oldtimer. He is Smithers. I mean, is Mr. Birds like he’s helping him run the power plant. It’s factual information. I’m just imagining them frolicking through pressing the button. If we ever need Kevin Adams for an interview, he’s going to tell us to [ __ ] off. Why would we need a Kevin Adams? We we we probably don’t. I think the beauty of the show believes Kevin Adams. Like I don’t I don’t why we need that. Man, you’re really alienating yourself from that person in a position of power. Yeah. I don’t know. Go [ __ ] him.

Steve Dangle, Adam Wylde and Jesse Blake share their thoughts on the deal that saw Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price traded to the San Jose Sharks. What could the aftermath of this deal mean for both teams? Is something big on the horizon in Montreal?

  1. BONUSES on top of having made millions while being ""retired"" half a decade. What a joke.
I honestly cant believe that people have respect for this 💩.
"Hab for life" yea I bet!
While milking that franchise as long as possible.

  2. Money.

Putting Carey on LTIR would have meant another season not operating below the cap. It's just more difficult to do anything. Now they have 4-something million and a lot more wiggle room to make a move that addresses a need.

For San Jose, it's also money. For just the minimal real money that they'll have to pay Carey out, they get a 5th-round pick. They had like $20mil in cap space before this (but were slightly above the cap floor I think) so paying barely any real cash & $10.5mil cap space for a 5th was their way of putting that cap space to work for them with essentially not much else to spend it on right now. Plus Jesse made a great point about actually being able to trade guys now without going under the floor.

I kinda thought SJS would get a little more, honestly, but I guess.

  3. Price is done playing, why are still talking about him honestly? Dudes been out of the league for a minute yet we still talking about him 😅

  4. As of this season teams don't accrue cap space anymore. All cap calculations are on a full season's cap hit. Which means teams can no longer exceed the cap space by accruing caps space and acquiring prorated contracts to stay under the cap.

  5. The guys love to shyte on the Hawks (which I get), but the pipeline is deep with talent (especially the blueline) and I think that over the next two years there are significant strides. Hawks have really only been rebuilding for 3 years – so this isn't a Buffalo/Detroit wandering around in the mushy middle.

  6. We giving all them draft picks to Pits for Sidney Crosby at end of the year so that we walk all over the Leafs again and make Leafs fans shed more tears.

  7. Even tho will probably not play sharks can least maybe do some merchandise sales jersey sales or anything that they have to offer and price could be a spokesman for the company to anything he wants to do for San Jose Sharks
