WORST NHL rules? LEAST favorite team? FAVORITE teams? | Tampa Bay Lightning Podcast

NHL commissioner for a day. What’s the first rule you change in the rule book? That’s a question we’ll ask on today’s Locked on Lightning. I’m Nick Morgan and I am joined by the Tim Taylor tonight, Andre Wah, Greg Steven. Greg, how’s it going, man? Good morning. Good morning. This is a fun show today. We got some uh little spicy topics. Oh, yeah. We’re We’re bringing the heat on this one. Uh less than a month to go before the start of the NHL regular season, just a couple of weeks away from preseason. We’re bringing some hot takes on this one. We’re talking the least favorite NHL rules. the rules we would absolutely change. We’re also talking about teams outside the bolts that we usually find ourselves cheering for and probably the spiciest one of all. What NHL team do we hate the most? All coming up on today’s show. First, I want to mention today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Download the FanDuel app now by visiting fanduel.com and win $300 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. All right, Greg, million-doll question that we asked at the top of the show. NHL, it’s got some dumb rules. Let’s say a few of them. Yeah, there there are quite a few dumb rules. So, let’s talk about this. If you’re NHL commissioner and you get to take out one stupid NHL rule, what stupid NHL rule are you changing? I think the dumbest one in my opinion is the goalie trapezoid. I just That’s what I was going to say. Or one of them. Look, I’m a huge Martin Broaddor fan. He’s kind of what inspired me to love hockey initially. Um so, you know, that’s like the Marty Brodor rule. Yeah. It’s gotta go. Yeah. Well, it’s also fun. Like just watch the goalies like come out in the corner and, you know, take a shot down the ice, like make a play. I don’t know why they put that in there to begin with. Yeah. I don’t It It almost feels like they put a rule in to make someone worse at their own strategy. It’s just like they negated a specific strategy for whatever reason. Maybe because only he was really doing it at the time. But, you know, I I don’t know. you I feel like that’s so unfair. Like just because a guy is innovative when he plays the sport, you got to change the rules because no one else does it. I don’t know. Seems weird. Yeah. It’s like in soccer, you know, and if like let’s say there’s just like a long ball down the other side and you’d be like, “Okay, the goalie isn’t allowed to, you know, play the ball with his feet at all if he’s outside the 18.” Yeah. you know, he he can he can stop shots with his hands. He can pass, do whatever. How many goalies do you see like come out like halfway up into their own zone and play pass? How many goalies do you see like coming in and going in for a corner kick when they’re down, you know, at the end of the game? It just seems like it neuters some of what you can do in that position, right? Yeah. Creativity has been deleted. Yeah. Here’s one that always grinds my gears, Greg. If you dive, it cannot be a trip. Get rid of the embellishment plus the penalty. Okay? And and and here’s why. I think if you’re really cracking down on players diving, you know, the embellishment penalties, then you know how you really punish people who feel that contact and go down. You let the guy who made that contact get off scot-free. And I I know why the thing is in place. Like I know like literally you can have a stick penalty and a guy can dive and sell it. Yeah. It’s one of those things where it’s like, well, technically, you know, that was a hook, so we do have to call you, but this guy way oversold it. If there is an embellishment, like if you catch a player legitimately just like flopping, taking a massive dive, just give them the twominute penalty and let the let the guy that hook and said, “You know what? This is this is your break. You know what? This guy tried to oversell it. You’re clear. This guy gets a two-minute penalty.” And I guarantee you, I guarantee you, you will see fewer embellishments from there on out because now it’s like, okay, if Nikita Coocher off hooks, I don’t know, uh, Thomas Harley. No, that’s not that’s not a good example. I’m trying to think of like somebody pointless from a team. Thomas Harley is like one of Dallas’s best players. Um, Andreas Athens. There you go. Okay. Wherever he is now. If if Nikita Cutro does that and Athanosu takes a dive, Athensu is going to the box, but so is Nikita Cutro. That’s a pretty good trade, right? Yeah. Like like tell me I’m wrong about if you want to get rid of diving, stop punishing the guy who actually made the penalty, get the second guy. You know, it’s like it’s like the NHL like fight rule, right? It’s like, oh, they never get the guy that threw the first punch. They always get the guy that threw the retalatory punch. Mhm. for diving and I guarantee it’ll go away. I think you make a good point. Um I think the reason they do it though is probably just because if they’re unsure, it’s just such a safe way to get out without blaming someone and then you know choosing a side, which to some extent I understand. But I think you’re absolutely right. Like if you made the rule that way, that would be gone so fast. And it’s so hard to tell with diving in some situations obviously, especially the one like when you’re like a couple feet from the boards and someone hits you. Some of those guys really send themselves into the boards. Sure. Yeah. You know, and then other times they get clobbered into the boards. So, you know, leaving that up to the ref is the ref’s discretion is, you know, it’s their job. So, you know, I think you’re right. like they should make a decision. Yeah. Uh speaking of it’s their job, what do you think of the uh the status of goalie interference? Like the goalie interference like reviewing it, you mean reviewing it like the way it’s called? Because it’s terrible, right? I don’t know. I I feel like I I like the way it’s supposed to be designed. I feel like the execution of it is pretty poor. Again, it comes down to like those weird judgment calls. It just needs to be written much better so that there’s no, you know, lack of clarity because I feel like we’ve seen a lot of goals that that look almost identical and be called multiple ways, right? So that’s where there’s an issue for sure. Yeah. It’s like the strike zone in baseball. Yeah. where an umpire is going to cause like, you know, hey, if it’s on the line, it’s going to be a ball for for one player or for one ump. If it’s if it’s on the line, it’s going to be a strike for the other ump. Like, there needs to be some sort of fit like what are three things we’re checking for, you know, like like pass interference in football. Like there there’s got to be some kind of, you know, automatic thing here. Um, and I think like the goalie’s ability to play the puck is is to me is the only thing that really matters, you know. Can I tell you another quick random one that I hate? Um, the ability for coaches to challenge after there is a review. Oh, yeah. I’ve seen that I think five times this past season. Yep. where it goes upstairs. It’s a coach’s challenge or not. And it’s not a coach’s challenge. It’s just, you know, a review like we’re reviewing the goal. Yep. It It’s up there and it’s like, “Hey, after review, it’s a goal.” They go to the center ice. Oh, Florida’s challenging that it’s a goal. Then they ask for another five minutes and it’s like upon further review, it’s not a goal. Yeah. Yeah. It’s I I hate that. Like just review it once. Like Yeah. That is really silly es like it is super weird that a coach would think that the call could change after they just did the process but right it is it is really silly right yeah u let me throw one more rule at you that I want to see changed um and tell me what you think uh the point system would you go three points for regular se or for regulation win two points for overtime win one point for an overtime loss I mean, yeah, you can. I I feel like it doesn’t matter too too much, but Oh, I disagree with that. Why? Well, I think No, I think it’s you’re rewarding for a clean. You’re better rewarding for regulation wins. Yeah, it makes sense. Yeah, you’re better rewarding for regulation wins. Um, and you’re not going to see like the last like minute of the game like everybody just like kind of coast it out and play for overtime because you get a point, you know. That’s true. Um, because you know a loss is going to hurt you more than a a tie will. I think if you do I think if you do that you incentivize teams to play a little bit more. I think you see teams get more aggressive especially during the playoff race late. I think it’s going to be more fun hockey. And I think it’s also going to maybe clear up like the middle of the pack a little bit. like the really good teams are going to be way above the really mediocre teams, right? I feel like that’s what they’re nervous about, honestly. But I it’s a it’s so hard to know how big that gap would really be, you know? Yeah, it is interesting because you always see the um like the player polls that come out like the athletic and AHL.com every year. That’s always the number one rule they say they want to see is the is the three-point system. instead of just like two points for that would be fun to like watch happen for a year at least to see, you know, how it goes. Yeah. No, I’m I’m with you there. Um, hey, here’s another million-dollar question. Let’s talk about least favorite NHL teams and favorite nonbolts teams. I feel like you and I can have uh some fun banter on this one. That’s coming up in just one second. Today’s episode is brought to you by Monarch Money. Nick Morgan alongside Greg Steven and Greg we are talking about the teams we love to hate. These are our least favorite NHL teams. Some of them uh maybe have just broken your heart one too many times. Some of them maybe you just don’t like anything about their fan base or anything like that or just had some bad Twitter exchanges. Whatever the case may be, we’re talking about the teams that we hate the most in the NHL. So, Greg, I’m gonna leave this to you. Your least favorite NHL team. Um, my least least favorite, you know, it’s you just want to say the Panthers, you know, but it’s not. I I think my least say the fact that the fact that you hesitated made me know right away. It’s like, okay, it’s not the obvious answer. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I want to give a more spicy answer. And this is one that is going to maybe surprise people because I feel like they didn’t really do anything wrong, but I hate them because they took Yanni Gourd from us. Seattle Kraken just cannot stand that whole team. Like I just Oh, really? Yeah. They’re so mediocre. It makes me so mad. I’m like, “You stole Yanni and now you’re trash.” And what? Like, come on. I I’m surprising. It’s surprising that you like said that over um you know Tampa or like over Vegas because they they were the who was was that Marsha show that they took or was he in Florida at that point? He was in Florida I think. Okay, let me see. Who did they take? Who did they take? Wow. Um hold on. Well, Wikipedia player. Okay. All right. So So Seattle one. Is there another just offthe-wall one that you hate? Um, probably, you know. All right, that’s our show. I I got it. I got it. It This is going to sound weird, but I just I do not I don’t like Jordan Bennington’s style. Like, I just don’t. So, like, as long as he’s a blue, I just like I hate this. His his goalending style or just his aura? His aura. Like, okay, that makes sense. He just he’s he always wants to fight people and like you know just Yeah. Just cool it, dude. Stop the puck. Yeah. Yeah. Great. Jordan Bennington, one of my least favorite players in the NHL. Uh Jason Garrison. Oh, wow. That was that was who the Vegas Golden Knights took. I don’t I think he played like that’s who Yeah, he he played Let’s see. Yeah, he he played less than a full month for the Golden Knights and they was put on waiverss. They just got rid of him. Yeah, which is kind of funny because he was like a everyday defenseman for for the Lightning the day the day or the year before that. But yeah, only lasted eight games with the Golden Knights before he was waved. And then uh So was Vegas your your least favorite? Uh I don’t like Vegas, but that’s not my answer here. Oh, my answer um sorry Christmas if you hear this. the Avalanche. The Colorado Avalanche are absolutely my least favorite team. Uh number one, because uh coming from two fan bases that we’re going to talk about in the next segment, uh my early introductions to the Avalanche weren’t great. It was during the Red Wings ABS rivalry and then years later with covering the Nashville Predators. Um, you know, obviously like people like Patrick Wah, Adam Foot were people that you grew up absolutely hating. You know, you hated everything about him. Uh, Mike Reachi, I always wanted to punch that guy. dumb face, even though he could probably pick me up with one hand and throw me the wall in real life, like the uh Nick Carnosi video that was circulating around a while back. Yeah, I just don’t like absolutely anything about them. Um don’t like, you know, Yeah. Even Even now, like Nathan McKinnon, go to McDonald’s. Just try a Big Mac, you pompous jerk. Fast food is not good for you. Yeah. So, that’s that’s I think always number one for me. And then the other one, um this is a I’m going to throw a random one out there, okay? But it’s the Anaheim Ducks. Yeah. You know what? Absolutely hate the Anaheim Ducks. Biggest reason, second biggest reason is Corey Perry. Um Oh, I love Cory Perry. Yeah. is because he was on the lightning for two years, but even then he wasn’t fun to cheer for for me. Um, but Chris Pronger. Yeah. Biggest Yeah. And you know, on ice jerk. Um, you know, you had Corey Perry, you had Ryan Gatslaugh, you had Ryan Kesler who’s also a jerk on the ice. like like there’s it’s just like a team of people other than like Teimu Salani that is just you actively want to see fail, right? I feel like that’s the new Panthers. Well, I don’t I Okay, I hate Tampa or I hate Florida because they’re division rivals. Yeah, but and but they play a scummy game. They play a Okay. Yeah. All right. They play a scummy game, dude. And it’s fine. like it’s acceptable. It’s hockey, right? But like they do that’s just their that’s their thing. I wouldn’t Okay, Sam Bennett like those hits. Okay, those are scummy hits. That’s that’s a scummy player. I’m I’m willing to call it out right now, but Xlad I don’t I don’t know if like Matthew Kachchuck like that’s a player you would want on your team, right? 100%. Look, I love I dude look I love the style but they do it. Sure. Yeah. Sasha Barkoff. Another guy I absolutely love. Yeah, I like Bararkov. Yeah, I mean I like Barkoff more than Pronger. I don’t like it’s you hate them because they’re division rivals. They’re Florida rivals and and now that they’ve won two straight cups and they’re I would say probably more of a favorite than we are. I’ll put it that way. But I don’t I I just I feel like the burning hatred that like let’s say like Detroit and Colorado had that like like Montreal and Boston have that Pittsburgh and Philly have. I Is it just me or is it not quite there yet between Florida and Tampa Bay? I I I agree. I just don’t think it’s been like close enough for it to be a real rivalry. Like the Lightning didn’t Let’s not pretend the Lightning were close to beating the Cats, right? Like it just wasn’t. So to me, and I think I think on ice they played the best of Yeah. any of any of their Eastern Conference matchups. But no, it’s it’s you know, it’s not like they took them to seven games, right? And I don’t know. I’m gonna throw one more at you before we run out of time on this segment. For some reason, I just cannot stand the Carolina Hurricanes either. And I used to live there, too. Just Brenda Moore’s coaching style just I’m like, “Dude, this is so this is not going to work.” And it never works. Like, so is yours just more like frustration at the system? Like, Rod Brenmore, what are you doing? But it’s also like they have no star player and like there’s nothing around their arena. Like everything about the team just screams boring and like I don’t care about this team. Get them out of here kind of vibes. Do they not have a star player or because they play in Carolina, do they just not market their players enough? Uh I say they don’t have a star player and I say because they’re in North Carolina they don’t no one wants to go there. Oh, okay. Mo Randon. Um, I mean, look, I lived there. I lived 40 minutes from that arena for years, and let me tell you, there’s nothing there. So, yeah. Um, Carolina fans, if you’re listening, I think Sebastian is a star. I’m just going to put that out there. I think Jacob Slavven’s pretty good, too. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Just Just throwing that out there. All right. Uh, let’s switch gears here and talk about our favorite nonbolts team. I know for this one, Greg, I’ve got a couple personal stories, but I’ve also got a really fun off-the-wall one. Talk about that one in just one second. Today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. NFL season is here, folks. Celebrating the Bucks big win over the Falcons this past week. Nick Morgan here with Greg Steven. And Greg, let’s switch gears here. We talked about our least favorite teams um and then got into a heated debate about the Carolina Hurricanes roster as a result. All right, let’s let’s change it up a bit. Who’s your favorite non-Tampa Bay Lightning team? I think this changes year to year, but right now it is the San Jose Sharks. That’s a good one. And look, I love the guys they got coming up right now. Like Celerrini looks fantastic. He’s going to be a superstar. Will Smith looks great over there. Ekan looks great over there. They got Ascarov coming up in net. It’s just that’s a team to me that is just really fun to watch. And when the Sharks games are on, I throw them on. Even Even last season, they were getting smoked in a lot of them. But I swear when Celbrini is on, like he can win games alone. He he’s he’s almost like McDavid caliber to me. He’s Yeah, that’s going to be a really fun team to watch. And also shout out uh Locked on Sharks, JD Young. Uh one of my favorite non Locked on Lightning shows to listen to on the channel. They do such an awesome job over there. Uh JD is so fun. Um, so I wish best things for him. Um, and the Sharks going out the year. But I’m with you. That’s going to be a fun team to watch. And sometimes it’s just one of those things where you love watching really fun teams play. Yeah. Like it’s exciting exciting upand cominging stars. They’re always it’s it’s great to watch those guys develop. And Celabbrini just gives me such a wholesome great vibe like as a person too, I think. And that just like makes me want to watch him even more. Like he’s talented. He’s a good dude, you know, like that whole friendly bond they had going on with Defoley, you know. Yeah, I love that stuff. That stuff’s so great. Like he’s just a he’s like the older guy teaching them stuff. They’re hanging out in the hotel room and stuff. That stuff’s so great. Yeah, he he’s like the teen dad trying to tell everybody to, you know, get ready on time for Christmas pictures is giving off that kind of vibe. I was gonna say he’s the old guy, but then I was like, “Oh, wait. I think I’m older than him.” I was gonna say I can’t call anybody old in the NHL because I’m at the age that if I was playing on a team the locked on host would be like, “Oh, you know, he’s not going to stay healthy. He’s probably at the end of his career. You know, he’s a waiver candidate.” Basically, everything we were doing to 30year-old Zus Gurgensson’s on yesterday’s show. It puts things in perspective. Um, all right. So, I’ve got two teams that I have a little bit of a personal connection to. So, we’ll start with that. Um, number one is the Detroit Red Wings, and that is just because both of my parents are from the Detroit area. And my first foray really into like watching sports, like the age in which I was not, you know, you get to the age where you not only watch sports, but you can like kind of fully understand what’s going on and know who star players are and everything like that. that age was run the Red Wings won their back-to-back cups in in 97 and 98 and you know Steve Eisermanman um you know Sergey Federoff, Nick Lindström, Brennan Shanahan, so many legendary names there future future Tampa Bay Lightning Cup winner Tim Taylor, which was Was I Tim Taylor or were you Tim Taylor in this morning’s metaphor? You were Tim Taylor, I think. Okay. Um, yeah, there there’s so many teams and and that’s kind of how I got into hockey was just watching that. And then the other, which is no surprise if you’ve listened to locked on NHL over the years, and that’s the Nashville Predators. And that was the team I covered for for five years for on the forch.com, penaltyboxradio.com. Um, and you know, luckily locked on Predators with the awesome Anne Kimmel who’s absolutely killing it with Emilian on locked on Predators now. And that’s just because I grew up in Nashville. And you know, that was like the first time you could actually like drive 15 minutes and go see a hockey team play. And I remember like it was God whenever my parents got tickets for any game, it was like butterflies for the entire week. Like it was just on the calendar at school. couldn’t focus would like draw the logo on the thing. Christmas day Christmas day, you know, it was that was always just really fun for me. And then, you know, living in Nashville as an adult after college with disposable income, being able to drive down and just go see good games. Yeah. I mean, I I loved watching the Predators play growing up and um it was was fortunate enough to to be back in town when they made the cup in 2017 and the atmosphere was awesome and team sure has its fair share of problems now, but yeah, I mean, I’ll always have good memories watching them. Yeah, look, teams eb and flow. It’s okay. They have issues now. Yeah. Hey, is there is there another one? Um cuz I have an off-the-wall one, but I want to hear from you first. Is Is there another team that you just kind of love for whatever weird reason? It’s It’s sad because I really wish I could say that I still love the Devils because I’ve was a Devil fan when I was a young, right? I I just said Marty Rodor was my guy. I actually started playing goalie when I was young. That was how I got into hockey. Um, so I really wish I could say the Devils, but for some reason my love for them has really fallen and I don’t know why. Maybe because they were so bad for so long and I was at all those games when they were bad because that was when I was old enough to afford to go on my own. Yeah. And they were just horrible, right? Like I think it just wore me down to a point where I was like, I can’t. It doesn’t. I mean, they’re good now though. Yeah. Or or at least have like a good team to build around. They make me feel like the Hurricanes do, you know. Yeah. Oh, wait a minute. Wait a minute. The Devils have star players. They do. They do. Is more of a star than anyone on the Hurricanes roster. I was going to say, yeah, you’re you’re not doing that to Jack Hughes on this show. No, no, no, no, no. I still think they they are a little overrated, though. Like roster-wise, they have some good guys, but I just they were rated so highly. They were rated to do really well last season and I to me it was like they’re going to be mediocre and I don’t know why anyone thinks otherwise. Um they’re they’re at that point where they had the core, they just need the rest of the team. Yeah, exactly. You know, they need those depth pieces. They need those guys that can come in and support the core. And hey, you you mentioned the Sharks. I feel like the Sharks are kind of in that same vein. Yeah. Give him give him a couple years and maybe you and I will be back at a Devil’s Gate together. Okay. All right. One off-the-wall one that I want to throw at you, uh, the Utah Mammoth. Oh, yeah. And it stems from being a big fan of the Arizona Coyotes. Um, a because I always thought the Coyotes had the coolest logo in the NHL in two iterations. The Cacina Coyote was kickass. I love that they brought it back. That is the coolest logo, coolest color scheme of any NHL team. I will die on that hill. Nice. Uh but even when they changed to like that brick red, like kind of the more old school style, that was also one of the sickest logos in the NHL. It was nice. Yeah, especially when they had like the black alternates and in that color, too. Uh and then they moved to Utah. Rest in peace, our dear friend Coyotes. Uh, but then I went to a Mammoth game last year and it was fun. And now that they’re the Mammoth, their logo is cool. I love like the black and ice blue color scheme. It’s just like one of those teams that I just for some reason have always cheered for. I somehow wound up being like on their roster during the Be a Pro in NHL like 12 or something like that and like learned all their players. Like I for some reason I always thought Boyd Gordon was better of a player than he was just because he was like lights out on my line. Um yeah, just kind of like a random thing like that. I’m a big Clayton Keller fan, so I’m with you. Yes, big Clayton Keller fan. And obviously we have Serge to cheer for now. So Right. Yeah, 100%. Yeah, I think they’re going to be pretty good this year, so we’ll see. I think they’re going to take a step forward this year. I think they might fight for a playoff spot. Uh, I think they have a way better roster than I think people are going to give them credit for. Um, and I think both Connor Ingram and uh, Carl Vamela are goalenders that I think can get hot at any given moment. So, yeah, I feel like Vamela’s shown flashes of like, wow, this guy’s really good. Oh, so is Ingram. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They have some pieces over there. It’s just got to give him the time to put them all together. Um, interesting. Hey, if you’re listening fans, drop us your least favorite NHL team and then a team besides the Bolts that you love cheering for. I’m excited to see these answers. Hey, we got a lot more hockey coming on this week. Uh we’re going to talk about the playoff system, something that maybe we think has kind of hampered the Lightning the past couple of years. Would you like to see it changed and how that’s coming up? Plus, uh, Friday kicks off the prospects tournament in Tampa. It’s our first look to see some of Tampa Bay Lightning’s biggest prospects on the ice. It’s a big interesting year because there’s no Isaac Howard on this team. Uh, what do we think of that trade, how it’s going to impact the Lightning moving forward? Those are all topics that are coming up later this week on Locked on Lightning. That’s going to do it for us on today’s show. Thank you for making us your first listen of the day. We’ll be back with an all new episode tomorrow morning. We’ll see you then. You’re Locked on Lightning, your daily podcast on the Tampa Bay Lightning, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Okay, that was the wrong button. Here you go.
