Michael Misa of the San Jose Sharks joins NHL Tonight

Well, speaking of putting up points, how about Michael Mason and what he did his draft year in the OHL? 134 points in 65 games. Uh, that was the most points by a draft eligible player since Patrick Kane had 145 points back in 2006 2007. Misa drafted second overall by the Sharks in June and joins us now on NHL tonight. Michael, good to see you again. Um, how’s life been like since we last saw you at both the Stanley Cup final and then uh at the draft out in LA? Yeah. No, it’s been good. Um, you know, a little busy at times, but um, yeah, I’m in San Jose now trying to kind of settle in and it’s been good. Yeah, I got to ask you, it’s it’s always impressive when you get young guys like yourself that I mean, you’re one of nine players to get exceptional status in the CHL. I mean, what comes with that is a lot of pressure and the way you guys just go about your business. I mean, did you ever feel like this whole thing up to this point has been pressure or you just playing the game? Yeah, I mean, I think in terms of pressure, it’s just something I’ve had to deal with since a young age. Um, there’s there’s not really any pressure. It’s it’s more just me going out there and trying to have fun. Um, you know, play the game I love and do the best I can. So, you go to an organization with a lot of young guys here and it’s an upand cominging group. I think about Will Smith and Mlin CBrini, of course. How is it that they’ve been able to kind of welcome you into the organization? Yeah, they’ve been great. Um, you know, I met Will at the draft. Um, you know, he’s super friendly, great guy. And then, um, I’ve texted Mac a couple times this summer. Um, you know, just asked him for advice on, you know, coming into the league as an 18-year-old, what I what I can do to, you know, better my game and try to make the team. Um, but yeah, they’re both great guys and looking forward to seeing them here soon. Uh, you mentioned being in San Jose right now, just trying to acclimate yourself, settle in. How’s that process going both on and off the ice for you? It’s great. Yeah, just getting here um you know, meeting some of the guys that are already here and um you know, starting to skate uh work out with them. It’s you know, trying to feel like a pro and um just learn stuff from them. So, it’s it’s been good so far. Michael, what were you uh maybe working on a little bit more this summer than you have in prior? Um I think just my conditioning um you know, and speed on the ice. I think the biggest thing next year for me is going to be um you know conditioning, uh strength obviously, but um just trying to stay at that NHL pace. Um so I think the biggest thing was just conditioning, a lot of running, uh sprints, stuff like that, just to make sure I’m in the best shape for camp. You have an interesting sort of decision that you may be helped with through your family and through your club, but you have your brother going to Penn State. You got Sagenov sitting there as well. Obviously, the San Jose Sharks would be the number one thing. How are you navigating through those tough waters to kind of eventually uh end up where you’re going to be here? Yeah. Um you know, like you said, uh definitely there is some different pathways, but for me it’s I’m trying to try trying to make the Sharks next year. Um and you know, my goal is to play in the NHL next year, and I’m going to do everything I can to try and make that that goal happen for me. So, uh I’m looking forward to camp here in a couple weeks. Since being out in San Jose, have you had a chance to met the uh meet the legend that is Jumbo Joe Thornton yet? Well, I met him at dev camp um like last month. He was great. I haven’t seen him here yet, but you know, I’m I’m sure I’ll see him around. Um yeah, he he’s uh awesome to have on this organization just how, you know, how much he did in the NHL. It’s uh good to ask for advice from him and, you know, um try and try and better your game from legends like that. So, it’s it’s pretty cool to have him here. Yeah. I was going to ask if you had a chance to kind of pick his brain about being, you know, he was a first overall pick. You were number two overall. Just the expectations that come with, you know, that status and and trying to, you know, navigate your way in the National Hockey League. Yeah. You know what? I haven’t asked him that yet. Um, when I did talk to him, it was more just like little things to do on the ice. Um, because it was more like impractice related. But, um, definitely something I I’m going to have to ask him and um, you know, looking forward to seeing him again soon. Awesome. Well, Michael, we appreciate the time. Thanks so much for joining us.
