Day 15 Explaining Every MLB Mascot – the Miami Marlins’ “Billy” #mlb #baseball

The Miami Marlins are named after a fish. And before they ever played a single game, they already had a mascot. This is day 15 of explaining every MLB mascot. In 1993, Major League Baseball expanded for the first time in a quarter century, adding two new franchises, the Colorado Rockies and the Florida Marlins. But why a Marlin? Well, the mascot is a Marlin, obviously, because it’s the team name, but the team’s name is tied directly to South Florida’s fishing culture. And the Atlantic Blue Marlin is one of the region’s most iconic species. The team unveiled Billy the Marlin at a season ticket holder event on February 25th, 1993, a full two months before the team ever took the field. His most iconic feature is his massive fiberglass bill. Billy the Marlin could have killed them right there with his You see that? They were going in there. I mean, that that could do some damage. And if you measure to the tip of the fin, he’s over 8 ft tall, making him the tallest mascot in baseball. The Marlins have undergone a lot of changes, but since day one, Billy has been the face of the franchise. He debuted in teal and silver in the Florida Marlins era. And as the team rebranded, so did he, adding orange and black when the team became the Miami Marlins in 2012. And then back to today’s sleek black and blue palette. But he’s always been Billy. And as a quick reminder, we did do Billy today because he commented on a previous video. So if you want me to do your favorite mascot next, tag them in the comments. Unlike most mascots, Billy has never been retired, redesigned into something else altogether, or picked up a sidekick. Just a few color changes and that’s it. At this point, I’m convinced the team could fully move cities and change their name to something else, and Billy the Marlin would still be here to stay. He’s the only fish mascot in the entire league and the second most famous fish in all of baseball. Second only to Mike Trout. Follow and come back tomorrow for part
