So, we’re here to help you get ready for the upcoming season by previewing all 32 NHL teams between now and opening night. Before we bring in our local expert to talk about today’s team, Shu, we’re going to learn more about the Utah Mammoth. The Utah Mammoth. They actually have a name this season. They do. But you know what? The Utah the Utah hockey club I actually liked a lot. You know, I had a little bit of a European feel. I mean, I liked it, but also there’s a lot to like beyond just the uniforms and the new team logo. There’s a lot to be excited for when it comes to the Utah Mammoth. And I can’t wait to get into talking about what the local expert we have coming up plus learn more about some of the young guys that are going to be looking to build upon a very successful season a year ago. No doubt about it. So let’s not waste any time. We are excited to have one of the co-hosts of Locked on Utah Mammoth and he is Tom Callahan here to give us his insights on the team he covers every day. Tom, thanks for joining us. How are you? Thanks for having me on. Looking forward to it. Yeah, doing well. I mean, Tom, it’s it’s it’s fall now, right? Training camp’s right around the corner. We’re all excited. No doubt about it. And and Shu mentioned it. Uh new name, new logo. We thought it might be locked on Yeti for a while, but no, it is locked on Utah Mammoth. Uh what what do you think? What do you think about the name and the logo? Uh I really like it. U they already had the colors picked out. I was rooting for Yeti. I really was hoping Yeti was going to get it, but of course, yeah, I mean that there’s a certain, you know, beverage container company that had some thoughts. Um, so it didn’t quite work out, but look, at the end of the day, I think fans are excited to have a logo and a name to go with the colors. And now kind of the you’re a cool kid if you have something that says Utah Hockey Club because you were a year one, you were OG, you can prove it now. Um, so that’s a pretty cool thing for them. But no, I love it. Uh, I think they did well with the logo and finally getting to see a look at the jerseys with uh, Ila wearing them. TJ Ginla wearing them at the Upper Deck rookie showcase. They look sharp. Yeah, they do. So, before we get into this coming season uh, and the offseason, I did want to take you back to last season. Of course, the first year for the franchise in Utah, moving from Arizona. Obviously, there’s going to be a honeymoon phase. people in Utah just excited to have the NHL in their state, but how the team performed, no playoffs, but they were 12 points improved from the year before. What was the feeling about how the season went uh the first season in Utah? Well, if anybody was listening to us, um they would know that we said from the beginning playoffs were if they overachieved they would make the playoffs, but that was not the expectation for us last year. I think a lot of the national pundits got hyped up about the team and the move and kind of overshot it a little bit. Uh it’s a new franchise, but it is the the same guts as the Arizona Coyotes essentially. So carrying that forward, this rebuild has been going on for a while. And the team had some misfortune last year. I like to say there aren’t excuses, but there are reasons. And at one point they had four of their top six starting defenseman out of the lineup at the same time. It’s really, really, really hard to win hockey games. When that’s the case, they were inconsistent. Uh, and the injuries played into it. It was a big part of it. They had some other issues along the way. They started to look good towards the end of the season, but by then in such a crowded not only west, but just central division, there was no room for them to to climb. So, they end up missing the playoffs. Not a huge surprise. The fans loved it. They loved the product. They love the vibe around the team. They love everything going on at Delta Center. Uh they were extremely excited to have NHL hockey and I think it’s really caught on there. So, the city’s got a lot to look forward to coming up here. You know, one of the things that I really loved about watching the Utah Mammoth, even though last year was a Utah hockey club, which I liked, was the play of Logan Culie, who is one of the one of the bright young stars in the NHL. He has really come into his own going going back to last year in which that you you think about the season that he had 65 points through 75 games and you talk about the young core that’s in Utah with alongside with Clayton Keller who’s also there as well. How much of a factor do you believe the young car will continue to be as they continue to mature in their individual games which will hopefully translate into their team success as well? Koulie is a future superstar. Uh there’s no doubt about it. He’s about to sign his contract extension here. Follow Dylan Gunther who signed his the previous season. If history holds, it should be announced during camp. There’s no guarantee because they don’t have to do it till the summer, but that’s just kind of the way they’ve done things in the past. So, I expect a year out he’ll get it unless the player doesn’t want to sign because as we know the cap is escalating and going up and now we have the new CVA coming up. So, that’s the only reason I could think it wouldn’t happen. But, they have an excellent top six. I I mean, not good, not great, it’s excellent. And I know we’re going to talk about the addition here of J.J. Purka in a moment, but even without Purka, uh, you have Clayton Keller, 90 points last year. I think he’s due to hit 100 this year. Dylan Gunther signed his big contract, as I mentioned, came out like a house of fire, then fell off for a while, then picked it back up. This is a lot of the inconsistencies we saw were of a young team and that core getting better, working together, becoming more mature. He’s going to be part of that. Uh, Kulie is a huge part of that. He is the future 1C of this team. They’re pretty set down the middle. I think if they could add one more center they would. Uh maybe a a 2C type of player, but up up top they’re so good. Uh they’ve got Nick Schmaltz who I think is fantastic and is very underrated in the role that he plays. So they have a lot of guys who can hurt you. Uh a lot of players who can do some damage offensively. And again, I mean so many injuries last year. It was so tough. And I think that just by benefit of getting to play together more often, they’ve got to be better. Well, Tom, you kind of answered my question. I was going to ask you about Clayton Keller and his career-high 90 point season, tied for 11th in the NHL, maybe quietly uh around the league perhaps, a star player if you put up 90 points. And you think it’s even going to be more? You said 100. Why do you think it’ll be even better this year? You know, I was so upset when he was left off four nations. Uh, I could understand the other omissions. I get it. But Keller just for some reason has not gotten the respect. He does so much. He plays all all 200 feet of the ice and is good in his own end. He’s a very smart player. He can distribute. He can shoot. Uh, one of the things that really worked out for them last year, even when there was a little bit of line juggling, was finding guys to put on either side of him who can shoot the puck. And Gunther’s a shooter. Uh, can go both ways. And the funny thing about Keller is Keller in his first couple of seasons was a goal scorer. This year became more of a distributor and a playmaker, but he’s got the talent to do both. And I think now with them getting deeper and again, I know we’re going to talk about the Purka thing coming in, but just that talent that he’s got around him and whatever the top line ends up being because it’s it’s still going to be up in the air heading into camp. There’s a lot of talent there that can make things happen. And I think the power play is going to be better this year. Statistically, they weren’t bad, but what they weren’t was clutch. And again, I think that’s some factor of a younger team in a lot of ways. The core on this team is not that old. They don’t have a lot of old guys. On defense, they’ve added some because they’ve had to for depth reasons, especially dealing with the injuries last year. But this is a team that I think is going to produce more points because they have to again just by virtue of playing together defensively take better care of their own end. They were so bad at it last year, but I think if they’re better in their own end this year, it’s going to generate more offensive opportunity. And I don’t think we’ve seen the the cap for Logan Culie. I don’t think we’ve seen the cap for Dylan Gunther. And we certainly have not seen it for Clayton Keller. All right, we’ll get more into the Utah Mammoth off season. We’ll do that next here on Locked On NHL Game Night. The NFL season is here and FanDuel is ready to make sure that you enjoy every moment. He is one of the co-hosts of Locked on Utah Mammoth. Uh Shu, why don’t you lead us off this segment? I mean, Tom, you know what’s funny because before Eddie went to break, there was a thought that I I wanted to touch on because you touched on how bad Utah Mammoth were a year ago defending in their own end. And I thought that it was interesting that in terms of one of the moves that they made was they went out and they acquired um they acquired a defensive Nate Schmidt as well to go along with the fact that a year ago they also added Ma Cirkchef as well. So my question to you is like what how do you see Nate Schmidt helping improve the Dord that is there in Utah? I loved Schmidt’s introductory press conference when he came in and said that as an older player and a more veteran player, his attitude towards things now is, you know what, just play me where you’re going to play me. Put me where you’re going to put me, and I will help out. I will do what I can wherever you put me, and I will do the best I can for this team. Not a lot of guys are willing to come in and say that. They have ideas about their playing time. They have ideas about their role. Uh, but Schmidt is a little bit I mean he’s a real breath of fresh air as a as a person just listening to him talk and joke around and uh all that. So I think he’s going to bring that too. I think he’s got a different demeanor uh which can keep him a little looser. He is going to help though on the back end. He and Ian Cole are the gray beards on this defense. I love both of them. I think they play great uh you know important minutes but they’re probably both going to be in a 56 this year. But you talk about Sergeev. Sergeev is live by the sword, die by the sword. He makes, you know, low percentage passes, but when they connect, they look spectacular, but when they don’t, they’re giveaways and turnovers and and, you know, just losing the puck. He can skate it, he can shoot it, he can do all these things. Plus, you’ve got Shawn Dury, who’s another guy. Like, their top four is really good. They made some good pickups last year, too. Oolie Mada is a guy they made a trade for who’s sticking around for this year. Cole was another one. Uh Nick D Simone was a waiver pickup. They brought him back again as a depth defenseman this year. They really have a good defensive core and again staying healthy and getting all these guys to play with one another on a regular basis and being familiar. John Marino was another trade pickup. I think they’ve got a great chance to develop something really solid uh which is going to really help them to win some games. But Schmidt’s role coming in as a Stanley Cup winner and as a guy who has an understanding I think of, you know, having been around and played both kinds of games, offensive and defensive, I think he really is going to become a leader along with Cole as far as a veteran voice in that locker room and someone if the guys are willing to listen to, and I don’t know why they wouldn’t, uh, who can really help them become a better defensive team because quite frankly, that’s where they need to make the most improvement. So, as Shu mentioned, you bring in Nate Schmidt, Brandon Tanv comes over as well. You bring in a goalie and Vacc Vanichek, but the big move, you’ve mentioned his name a couple times. They make the trade with Buffalo to get JJ Purka. Uh, how do you feel that move helps the top six and uh, how do you think he fits in? So, first and foremost, it gives them two dominant power play units because I imagine they’re going to divide and conquer between Purka and Gunther as far as shooters. Purka though can distribute as we saw with the Buffalo Sabres. Collected a lot of assist feeding Tage Thompson. Boy, I wanted Tage Thompson, too. I was getting greedy. But, you know, it looks to me like Peturka is a guy who was also poised to move up. And I have a lot of friends in the Buffalo media and I talked to a bunch of them about Burka and yes, he’s a defensive liability. He’s also pretty young. He just signed a big contract. Sounds to me like he’s at least initially a little more comfortable in Utah. Hopefully that is the case. There’s a lot of rough edges here with his game, but the offensive upside is undeniable. And I think the hope is for the Mammoth to bring him into the system. They’re going to be able to put him probably in second line minutes. I don’t see him as a top line guy right away for two reasons. Number one, I think that your top line has to be your matchup line. You know, you want to go one v one on lines, especially if you are doing line matching. I don’t see him having the defensive acumen to be able to do that. But number two, because of that, you can slide your second line into more opportune places to collect points and do a little more damage. And I think that’ll help him acclimate and feel more comfortable getting things in the the mammoth system, if you will. So, I really think Purka will have a chance to come in. He doesn’t have to be the guy. He doesn’t even have to be like the second guy or the third guy. He just has to come in, play his game, continue to develop and mature as a player and as a person. And I really think he’s going to be a big- time contributor for this team. You talked about it a little earlier, but I figured I’d bring this up again now. Logan Koulie’s contract. How do you project it on it turning out in terms of term and as well as money with the Utah Mammoth? You know, it’s funny, Shook, because we’ve seen a lot of the younger players not going for term. Uh they’re going for shorter deals. You know, they’re going three, four, five years betting on themselves, betting on this cap increase. Right now, it’s going up 5 million a year. And I think a lot of guys are looking at that saying to themselves, well, why would I tie myself down for eight years when I can go for a three-year deal and then sign a bigger deal later on, even though the CBA is going to limit it to seven with the team you’re with instead of eight, but to leave millions on the table doing it. So, initially, it’s kind of funny with the estimation always goes up the longer they wait. I’m like, well, maybe it’s eight, eight and a half, nine, nine and a half, maybe it’s 10. It just keeps going up. Um, if they would have signed this contract this time last year with with him, I thought he would have been a high $7 million player, maybe a low eight. Um, the funny thing is they don’t have a forward making more than eight. Everybody’s seven and change. You know, even Purkus extension, which made him the highest paid guy, 77. So, they haven’t spent that. But one of the things I will tell you is um earlier this summer when they were inquiring around about players and guys that they might like to acquire and talking about what they were comfortable spending um I remember thinking that based on what it sounded like Bill Armstrong was saying they were comfortable paying up to maybe 95 to acquire a player at the time. And now here’s the thing. The longer Utah delays, the more expensive he gets because all these big-time free agents are coming up next summer and already we’re hearing Capri off could be asking 14 to$16 million a season. They better hurry up and get tied up because we’re about to get into monopoly money here if we aren’t already. One area of the team as far as on the ice goes that we haven’t touched on yet is the goalenders. Uh, Caril Vulca, I know Connor Ingram uh, left the team last year during the season, entered the player assistance program after his mother passed away. He’s been cleared. He’s back. And I mentioned you’ve added VTech Vanich for some depth. What’s the position look like? Is there a clear one for sure or is there a competition going on? Well, there’s a clear one on paper. Uh, Veg is number one just by his contract that he signed. He was handed the contract of a starting goalender and that’s what the expectation is for him. It’s a 4.75 AAV through 2030. He’s got the long-term deal. The other two guys, Ingram’s 1.95. This is the last year. Um Vanichek is one and a half for this year. I do believe there’s a real competition between Ingram and Vanichek. Of course, the the variable here is Ingram getting back on the ice and Barry Trotz when I was in Nashville always used to say he described it as guys trying to catch a moving train when they’re jumping back into NHL speed. And that’s what Ingram has to do. So whether he’s been skating off the ice and doing whatever he’s been doing, it’s not NHL games. And that I think is it’s fair to expect he’s going to take a while to get up to speed. So I think unless something stunning happens in training camp, I think Vanichek is not handed but is kind of favored for the backup role and that makes sense. They’ve said some very complimentary things about him and they really believe that they can get Vanichek back to his New Jersey form. Uh which I thought was really interesting in the comments. They were saying they’ve studied his game. they really think that they’ve discovered some things that can get him back to that level of goalender which would be amazing uh if they were able to do that. And then the other thing too with Ingram is you know just where is he going to be? We don’t know yet. So they hedged their bets. They brought in a quality backup in Vanichek. Also two Czech goalenders on the same team uh is has not actually ever happened in the NHL. So that’s that’s a new thing, but could play in his favor for sticking there as well. But for now, yeah, Veggie is number one. Um, but he was number one two years ago. Then he got outplayed by Ingram, who started last year as number one, and then Ingram uh ran into his issues and what have you, and then Veg became the starter again, and here we are. So, you know what? By the end of the year, I have no idea. All I can tell you is by the trade deadline, one of them’s traded. I will tell you that one of them’s traded. All right. Coming up, we’re going to look ahead to the upcoming season for the Mammoth is a playoff spot. Uh something that is reasonable to expect. We will ask our guy Tom Callahan that and more here on Locked on NHL Game Night. All right, we are wrapping it up here with one of the co-hosts of Locked On Utah Mammoth, Tom Callahan. Tom, we’re going to take a look at the Utah Mammoth projected lineup here. Um, for those watching on YouTube, you can see it. For those not, I’ll describe uh and give you what the lineup looks like. But give us your thoughts on this and uh whether it looks pretty accurate to you or maybe there’s some positions up for grabs in training camp. Uh, but you’ve got a top line of Kulie centering Keller and Gunther. Uh, Hayden centering Purka and Schmaltz. Third line of McBain centering Keroot and Krauss. and a fourth line of Stenland centering O’Brien and Tanv. Defensive pairings, uh, Sergeev and Marino, Cole and Dury, Ma and Schmidt, and the goalenders we just talked about, Vamela and Vanich. Does that look about right to you, or are there some positions that maybe are up for grabs? And of course, things can always change during a game, but more or less, is this the lineup you think that the Mammoth will go into the season with? Well, so I’ll start with the defense. I think you’d probably flip-flop Mata and Cole. Uh, I honestly actually favor Marino Sergeev and then Derzy Mata to be played that way. Although they have tried Derzy and Sergeev together. To me, that’s a little too much of a good thing on one D pair, uh, if you will, because Dery likes to jump too and he’s got offense in them. Uh, Cole and Schmidt, as I mentioned, that’s the Grey Beards. Those guys are going to be playing their their, you know, 12 to 14 minutes a night, chipping in where they can, but they can both play up and down the lineup when they have to. Cole ate some big-time minutes last year during those injury uh spells for the Mammoth. So, yes, I think that’s an accurate top six. I would just flip those guys. I think the goalenders are pretty much set as you have them there. Up top, one of the questions for me is going to be uh the impact of a Tanv and of an O’Brien. There’s actually a couple of players coming into camp who are uh bigger Russian players that the team’s really excited about. Uh Dimmitri Shimichev is one of them and Denil Boot is the other. Shimichev is a defenseman who they think will be fighting for playing time and boot is a forward they think could make a jump to the North American game if they have an exceptional camp from what Bill Armstrong has said. He would give them a look. I also think some of the rookies this year coming into camp are going to get a nice long look look including TJ Ginla who we talked about a little earlier uh and Cole Bo is another one who I would not be surprised if he got a really long look. That said when the dust settles this gives them a very deep four lines. Probably the most disappointing guy on this list honestly was Lawson Krauss. Um he had a very down season last year. ended up spending some time on the fourth line. Uh Tanv is a little wrecking ball in there. He and O’Brien together could be a lot of fun, but I think those guys might actually be in and out of the lineup around one another. Uh one scratch, one’s in. It could end up like that. O’Brien last year went through a stretch where he was scratched and the team was struggling. Uh it was between Thanksgiving and Christmas and they took him out of the lineup and he was out for an extended period. But when he came back in, I felt like they were a much better team with Liam O’Brien in there. and he’s got two more years on his deal. He’s not expensive. They love him on the ice and off the ice in Utah. I would like to see him be a regular on there. And honestly, just completely overlooked all the time is Kevin Stenland, who is probably the best fourthline center in the NHL, does nothing but win defensive zone draws, gets all the Dzone zone starts. He’ll even start overtime and take the first face off and hop off the ice. He’s so important to this team. Uh works hard. Love that guy. I think he’s a he’s a big thing right there. But that bottom six we’re looking at, they are going to need to stir the pot physically for the Mammoth. They need to play big. They need to play tough. And if they can do that, that is the other reason why I believe the top six is going to have a good year because they’re going to have those guys clearing room for them on the ice. My question in regards to to this team is not so much on the ice but rather off the ice. Ryan Smith and his wife Ashley. They have made immense splashes in the first season in terms of exhibiting commitment to investing into this team. not just the team itself the roster but then also building facilities and as well as ensuring that they have a hockey ready m a facility to play in. So my question to you Tom is can you speak to the level of commitment that has been already been apparent from from the Smiths family to the rest of the NHL world and how much of an impact it has been locally in Salt Lake City and as well as in the state of Utah. You know what? They are committed to the city and the state heart and soul. Uh and they’ve shown that with their ownership of the Jazz. They’re showing that with their ownership of the Mammoth. And they want to do everything just top shelf. Uh you know, they wanted a first class organization. They have already told the general manager, Bill Armstrong, you can spend. And of course, the danger in that is then you go and spend. Um, you know, not everybody’s going to spend well, but they have given him the green light if he thinks it’s prudent. And I really do believe he does a very nice job managing the cap. Uh, he’s very cognizant of what’s available and doesn’t try to go. This is two years in a row. I think a lot of people expected the Mammoth to be in play for the biggest splash. Now, not that the Sergeev deal wasn’t a big splash, but it’s two years in a row where the Mammoth have kind of said, you know what, we’re going to pass on the big big names. Uh they were kind of around the Mitch Marner thing, but they weren’t this year, which in hindsight is probably fine. Uh they end up getting Purka instead, and they pay a very reasonable price in my opinion for Purka. So, I think they’ve they’ve been smart about it. And when it comes to the Smith family, not only are they building, as you mentioned, like the practice facility that’s coming in, that’s nice for the players, they’re renovating Delta Center, so that they’re actually inventing technology. There’s a crazy video on their website about how they developed like a three-way scissor lift stand, which has never been done before, so that they could have varying seating angles for hockey and basketball so that everybody can see the ice. So, they’ve really done some incredible things there. But off the ice and away from it, they’re committing to youth hockey. They’re committing to putting the money into the community. They want people to feel like this is their team, too. And I really, some people say that, especially some ownership groups, believe me, I work for a lot of them. Some of them say the right things, but do not put their money where their mouth is. I think the Smith Group puts their money where their mouth is because they care. This is their home, too. They’re not some, you know, New York LA. Sorry, Eddie. You know, whatever person coming in owning the team, this is someone who this is their town and they care enough that they want to reinvest in it and they’re doing it through a sports franchise or two. And I mean, God bless them. They got the money to do it, right? I mean, I’m not doing it, but um I think they’re doing things the right way, which is really important. Tom, final question for me, and it goes hand inand with what you’ve just been talking about. you have ownership that’s investing that’s seemingly doing all the right things that’s passionate about the product. There’s a rebuild that’s gone on. I think at some point clearly, you know, you want to see playoff hockey the and and success in playoff hockey. You’ve had you mentioned Bill Armstrong. You said you like what he does managing the cap. I believe this is his sixth season as GM. You got a head coach in Andre Tney. I believe he’s entering his fifth season. uh is is it time to see that result, that playoff result? And if that doesn’t happen, when is it time to and you’ve got a new owner who didn’t necessarily hire these guys to begin with. How big is this season and how big is is the playoffs for the Mammoth this year? So, locked on Mammoth, we’ve hung out our banner already. It’s playoffs or bust. So, saying I’ll say that on the national show. I say it on my show all the time. And the other thing is the seat is incredibly hot under Andre Tory. I have him on the hot seat because last year there were a lot of times when things went wrong and to me it was coaching and a lot of the giveaways, the defensive mistakes, the breakdowns. I know again injuries, reasons, not excuses, but that team did a lot of things that they could have done better. And to me, I think coaching is why they haven’t gotten over the hump just yet. Uh, but they have a chance now. There’s no excuses. And even Torney this year has said, “Yes, we’re making the playoffs this year. We have to, but what else are you going to say?” It’s that time to take a step forward. I don’t think Armstrong’s going anywhere. But I think if they start poorly or if by the end of the season they’re close, but they don’t make it, I don’t think Andre Tri’s be on the bench next year. Sh. You got one more or you want to leave it there? I had that I had the last question that was going to be my last screen. If if Andre Torony is gone, who do you think replaces him? Because because I agree. I think the expectation should be there because at one point the mammoth they work in a playoff spot compete competing attending, but obviously things fell apart. So if if they don’t make the playoffs for whatever reason that is and Tony is gone, who do you think takes over? I guess it it largely depends on who’s available. I’m not a Pete Dore fan. So hopefully not Pete Dbor. Um I’ve seen him ruin too many goenders when I used to cover the Vegas Golden Knights. I was there for that whole Mark Andre Flurry debacle and I remember it just oh what a mess. What a mess. And it was all of his own creation and he did it again in Dallas. But I So I hope it’s not Utah. Um but it really depends who’s out there. I know there’s the personal tie of John Cooper to uh Ryan Smith and everybody brings that up, but I mean Cooper is in Tampa as long as he wants to be in Tampa. I think realistically um it’s hard to name names now because it just I don’t know who’s going to be there. If it’s a mid-season replacement, they might not look outside the organization right away. Uh but if it’s an end of season replacement, yeah, they’re going to do a thorough search. Well, the Utah Mammoth will open up the NHL season October 9th in Colorado against the Avalanche. Looking forward to that and looking forward to talking about the Mammoth this season. Uh Tom Callahan is the host, one of the co-hosts of Locked on Utah Mammoth.
