Miami Heat Rumors On Norman Powell + 2026 Plan REVEALED By Heat Insider?
[Music] Barry Jackson, the legendary Heat reporter for the Miami Herald, shed some insight on a lot surrounding the Heat and in terms of their plan over the next 365 days. And on today’s episode, I wanted to react to what he said in his article on the Herald. This is the Heat Report. I am Nick Rolloloff. And one of the biggest things that he touched on was actually a potential Norman Powell extension. Obviously, the Heat acquired Powell in that three team deal earlier this off season with the Jazz and Clippers, and he has one year left on his contract worth about $20 million. So, it could be his first and last year in the 305. Well, here’s what Barry said on a potential extension. says, according to a source, the Heat are open to considering an extension with Powell if the start of the season actually goes well. So, what does that mean? It tells you if Powell looks like the same player that he was last season in Los Angeles, scoring, I’d say, anywhere more than 17, 18 points a game on incredible efficiency. Fits right into this locker room and uh starting lineup well in the first month of the year. Well, maybe the Heat pound out an extension with Norman really, really soon, but he is 32 years old, so you got to be wary of a potential decline over the next couple of seasons. More coming on Powell here, but quick break in the action. Are you excited for Heat basketball to be back? We’re almost a month away from this season. I mean, October 22nd. We got training camp in preeason basketball coming up soon. Like the video if you’re excited for Heat Hoops to be back. I’ll say it right now, I am very open to a Norman Powell extension, whether it wants to happen before the season begins against the Magic on October 22nd or in the first two or three weeks of the year. This is a player that has been one of the most consistent scorers and shooters in the NBA over the past decade. He’s been phenomenal across his time in the league with the Trailblazers, the Raptors, the Clippers, and now he hopes to continue it with the Miami Heat. And it is important if you decide to extend Powell to get it done sooner rather than later. If you extended Norman Powell right now, his max extension is three years for $77.4 million. Now, there is a world where the extension for Norman Powell comes in way less than the max extension, but we’re just showing the value that Powell could get to its absolute fullest extent. But if you wait to extend Norman Powell and he plays extremely well and you want to resign him or extend him in 2026, well, then he becomes eligible for a 4-year $128.5 million extension. That obviously is a significant increase from the number that we just shared. It’s a massive difference. In fact, if you extended them before the year on that three-year deal, the max AAV for Norman Powell is $25.8 million. Still maybe a little bit higher than what we’d want to see a Powell extension be, but certainly in the voice of reason if he plays really well to start the year. But $32.1 million. And as I mentioned, there’s no guarantee that’s what the Heat would give him, even though that’s the max he could earn. It’s just me saying I don’t think that he’s even close to a $30 million player. And it’d be quite the mistake for the Heat to give him that, even if he played exactly how he did a year ago with the Clippers. So, the difference between extending him now and potentially having to wait till next off season certainly changes in terms of how much you’re going to pay him on an annual average basis. And be the GM for me. Should the Heat give Norman Powell a contract extension right now? Type Y for yes, type N for no. Pin comment on today’s show. I mentioned the consistency that Powell plays with. I mean, you just see it when you look across his statistics over the last four years. Every year, doesn’t matter if he’s played for Portland, the Clippers, or even when he was with the Raptors. Man, he is a consistent 40% three-point shooter. He’s a consistent 15 point per game guy, and he’s a consistent 48% shooter from the field. And it’s not like he is taking less shots. No, his volume increased this past year for the Clippers and his efficiency actually rose from the field. He’s displaying the ability to get to his spot, get to um whether it’s off the catch, whether it’s off the dribble, like he can do so much for the Heat. And he’s the second option for Miami. He just is. Like you think about what the Heat have on this roster. The number one scoring option is Tyler Herro. Number two this year is going to be Norman Powell. And I know a lot of people might say, “Well, what about Bam?” like like Bam is barely the number two option for the Heat before uh they added Powell. And when you look at last season, the Heat I felt late in the year tried to get Andrew Wiggins more involved offensively than at a bio. So to me, if you’re going to ask who in terms of this roster is the options offensively in the half court for Eric Spolstra, it’s going to go hero one, it’s going to go Powell two, I’d probably put Bam at three, Andrew Wiggins four. Then you’ll start to see players like Nicole Yoic and DaVon Mitchell slide into that five or six range. Like that’s just how this hierarchy on the Heat roster goes on the offensive end of the court. I’ll tell you what folks, if Norman Powell does get extended or the Heat make any move, we will have you covered with content. So subscribe today and don’t miss a thing around the Miami Heat because boy are we still bringing you content every day. Let’s transition from the Norman Powell extension part of today’s show to looking at what the Heat could do if they are in or let’s say past the salary cap because there’s been a lot of discussion about the Heat trying to shed salary, letting Norman Powell walk, trading Andrew Wiggins for expirings and coming up with $84.5 million in expiring contracts, which is very possible for Miami. It would create a max contract spot, but there’s not really anybody open to give that max contract money to. So, it’s likely that the Heat maybe just hold on to Andrew Wiggins, maybe do extend Norman Powell and then if they do that, what are the options that they have? Well, it was shared by Barry Jackson that the Heat would still likely be able to use their non- taxpayer midle. Remember, if you are above the salary cap, but not across the luxury tax threshold, you can use a $15.1 million non-tax mid-level exception. Well, the Heat could actually use that $15 million salary. You could also put it across, was it three years, coat? So, you could do three for 45 mil with a free agent, add him in to that exception, and then he would still be able to stay underneath the luxury tax next year, which is something that if Miami is not going to get a superstar, they’d likely really try to do. Now, when you think about it, you might say, “Well, you’re not going to get a really good free agent.” Well, that’s actually not the case anymore. In the NBA, with this new CBA, $15 million per season is about where you’re going to get some of these top guys. Very rarely do elite players hit the free agent market anymore. They are oftent times resigned or traded. So, if you’re talking about just the top people changing teams, yeah, $15 million is right about that range. Just look at like what Duncan Robinson got from the Pistons. what Nquille Alexander Walker got from the Atlanta Hawks. And I get it. This was a very bad free agency class, but the classes aren’t going to get that much better. Is 2026 better than 2025? Very. Yeah, they are very lightly. But the point is probably like the top 10 free agents in the NBA next summer. The Heat would be willing and able to sign probably about half of them with that midlevel exception. So what’s the point of having this conversation in today’s episode? Well, the Heat have pushed this narrative out there and we have talked about it here on the channel that the plan was after trading Jimmy Butler is to create a max contract spot open for 2026 free agency. That’s why they didn’t want to take back a lot of salary for extended years in a Jimmy Butler trade. Well, there is no point of trying to do that. I don’t want to beat a dead horse here, but none of the top players in the NBA are reaching free agency anymore. The last person to do it was just a couple years ago, Paul George. Well, that’s been an unmitigated disaster in the first year and a half for the 76ers. So, you can’t look towards NBA free agency in terms of getting big-time players. It’s got to be through the trade market or you got to extend and develop your own guys. Which is why if you’re asking me what the Heat should do, I am not going to hold out hope and create cap space for next summer. No, I’m going to prioritize keeping my top young guys around, specifically Nicola Yovic, who is entering the final guaranteed year of his deal. He is a restricted free agent going into this upcoming off season. And as long as the Heat offer him the qualifying option, which they would, assuming he doesn’t have like a terrible season and play like 15 games where it’s like, okay, this guy can never stay healthy. Yeah, they’re going to be able to match any contract out there. Or you can just get an extension done now and lock him up. I have floated this exact contract out in the past where it’s a three-year $45 million extension worth $15 million in an annual average value. I’ve seen other publications like Bleacher Report project 13.3 mil on an extension. I’ve seen The Ringer and The Athletic project anywhere between 13 and 15. I’m fine giving him $15 million per season. We’re talking about a 22-year-old who seems to be ascending right now in terms of his ability to read the game and find himself comfortable on a basketball court. And if you watched any Euro basket, which I know a bunch of you guys did, he looked like he made strides during Euro Basket, man, he was impressive to me. The way he was able to work off of Nicola Joic, work in transition, grab rebounds and push, find his own way to get baskets. If he just is able to carry what he did at Euro Basket to this season for Miami, he might be in for that fourth year breakout that most Heat fans and I am hoping for and projecting. And if that’s the case, you might be left hanging on to Yoic in terms of like, oh shoot, I got to extend him for $20 million now. So, is it a little bit of a risk? Yeah, sure. But I think the risk in or the reward outweighs the risk by a pretty wide margin because if you could steal him for 15 mil per year right now instead of having to pay him 20 mil per year next summer, that is pretty pretty big in terms of roster construction and flexibility going ahead in the future. If the Heat do make an extension with Yoic, we’ll make a video. If the Heat extend Noral, we’ll make a video. Point is, we got you covered with everything Miami Heat. So join the channel today. Y
Is Powell better than Duncan offense wise?
If Powell blends in well with Ware Jovic and Kasparas I’d say extend him as a vet.
