BREWERS POSTCAST: Helman DESTROYS Brewers’ Hopes | How Will Milwaukee Respond?
This is the Brewers Post Cast, your instant game reaction for the Milwaukee Brewers, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Well, if you didn’t know who Michael Helman was before the start of this series, Brewers fans, we certainly do now. the MVP of the first two games of this series undoubtedly going to the 29-year-old from Texas stealing the show tonight right under the feet of our Milwaukee Brewers. This one in Arlington by a final score of 524. Hello everyone and welcome in to the Locked on Brewers postcast. My name is Brandon Snide. You can follow me on X, formerly Twitter, Brandon Snider. What the Hellman is the uh the the the theme of this evening’s show as Michael Helman, as we have mentioned, stealing the show from Milwaukee. We’ll talk about what he did tonight, really what he’s done in this entire series in the first two games. Chad Patrick, I know there’s some thoughts and there’s some feelings on Chad Patrick. We’ll we’ll dive into his start, what went right and what didn’t go right for uh for number 39 on the mound tonight. And the Brewers lose. That’s bad news. The worst news is that the Chicago Cubs getting a bounceback victory in Atlanta this evening. So, the National League Central uh divisional lead going down from 7 and a half to six and a half games after tonight’s finals. And uh Philly also winning. So, the National League tightening up as far as standings going. The Brewers just a few games now ahead of the Phillies for the top spot in the National League. But still, the good news above all, the Brewers still control everything. everything is still in front of the Brewers. So, we’ll talk about all of that and of course your thoughts, your reactions, and uh yet holding off on those celebrations. We’ll see if the Brewers can uh can get back into their winning form. Let’s begin quickly though with the scoring summary tonight brought to you by our wonderful partners at Monarch Money and Game Time. Cody Freeman getting things started for the Texas Rangers. It would go scoreless in the top half and bottom half of the first inning. Chad Patrick really good to begin this one too. And I know we’re into the scoring summary, but real quickly, Chad Patrick starting this game with three strikeouts uh in the bottom half of the first inning. So, it was a good start for Chad Patrick. He did find himself in a little bit of a jam later on. We’ll talk about that. But Cody Freeman getting the scoring started with a single to right field in the bottom half of the second inning. And that would give the Rangers a one- nothing advantage. Nothing in the third or the fourth inning for either one of these teams. And it takes us to the top half of the fifth inning in this one. And this was such a roller coaster uh inning for the Brewers. First off, the Brewers would plate three runs in this inning. And this would until Jake Bowers late in the game would be the only runs that the Brewers had scored up until that s in the series, the first two games that is with the uh Texas Rangers. Uh Christian Yelich getting an infield single that would play to run that would tie things up at one a piece. William Contrarus with guys in scoring position, two of them to be exact, plating a uh uh two runs with a single to center field. Earlier in this game, Bryce Terrain had an opportunity, it felt like an opportunity to kind of get this Brewers offense jolted and get them going into the right direction. Michael Helman out in center field robbing Bryce Terrain earlier in the inning of what would have been a two-run home run. And it just felt it like this entire series and we’ll talk about it over the course of the next 20 minutes or so that the Brewers I mean the the the loudest and hardest outs of it feels like really in the last few weeks all happening in this series. We talked about how Christian Yelich was last night. Tonight no difference. The Brewers just really pounding out some hard hard outs for uh for their offense and and just couldn’t find the gap on you know in that outfield and that hitters ballpark uh out there in Arlington. And so a frustrating offensive night for the Brewers. They do get three in the fifth. Uh but that’s going to take us to the turning point because after the Brewers go up 3 to one in the top half of the fifth inning, the lineup turned over for Texas in the bottom half of the fifth inning. And unfortunately, if you’re a Brewers fan, that’s your turning point tonight in a 5 to4 loss. Time to reveal where the game was won or lost. It’s the turning point. So after you played three runs in the top half of the fifth and you take a 32-1 lead, Chad Patrick up until that bottom half of the fifth inning where he was only able to record one out after Ashby would come in and also surrender a few runs of his own. That’s where things kind of fell apart for Chad Patrick. Two of those three runs he gave up were guys that he had issued walks to earlier in the inning. So that was the frustrating point. The uh the Texas Rangers able to quickly respond. And who else but Michael Helman in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Not only in the top half of the fifth inning does Michael Helman rob Bryce Terrain of what should have been a two-run home run. In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Michael Helman hits his own two-run home run. Basically to the same spot of the ballpark, left center field, uh 383 ft. That tied the game up at three a piece. Wyatt Langford would then triple to center. That would score a run. a double later in the inning would played another run that gave the Texas Rangers the five to3 lead that would and going forward their bullpen you know which old friend Hobie Milner coming in a handful of arms out of the bullpen for Texas shutting the Brewers down in the sixth inning shutting the Brewers down in the seventh inning shutting the Brewers down in the eighth inning in the ninth Jake Bowers who’s really I maybe their best hitter over the last week or so uh a absolute rocket to center field 44 43 ft for his seventh home run of the season. Later in that inning with one with a couple of outs, Jackson Cheurio would single and then about as hard as you can hit a ball, Christian Yellish with an absolute rope right to the Michael Elman in center field and and just could not find a gap uh was Christian Yellish. A frustrating offensive performance because it wasn’t like the Brewers were unable to put the bat on the ball. They were just hitting them right at defenders earlier in the game with guys in scoring position. William Contrarus, a a absolute dart. Jake Burgerer standing right at first base. So, a a frustrating performance uh and not because the Brewers were unable to plate runs or or or have those big hits. They just hit them to exactly where a defender was standing it felt like all game long. And you can certainly go back to Monday’s game as well as the Brewers take the loss. 11 hits though today in total for Milwaukee with four runs scored. On the flip side, Texas, I mean, wasn’t like they did anything crazy, right? seven hits, scored five runs. Obviously, the big two-run home run for Michael Helman, as we had mentioned, he also robbing Bryce Terrain of a home run in this one. So, it it felt like the Michael Helman game in this one. And he was really really good defensively on a few different plays, you know, tracking the ball in the gap, you know, being able to run it down and and you got to give credit where credit is due. Michael Helman, uh, unfortunately going to get the honors tonight in a 5 to4 Brewers loss. This is the locked on player of the game. I quite frankly Monday night, you know, without Michael Helman, that’s probably a different game where he hits the grand slam for Texas and gives them a jolt offensively and gives them really all they needed in that game and and that five to nothing loss tonight. No difference. You’re able to rob Bryce Terrain of a two home run, two-run homer. You take two runs off the board and you put two runs on the board for your team. A fourrun swing for Michael Helman in really a matter of minutes for this one. He’s going to get your locked on Brewers postcast player of the game unfortunately. But again, just got to tip your cap. Give credit where credit is due. Unfortunately, didn’t fall for the Brewers in this one. I will say this though, a lot of negative things on this one, right? The Brewers lose. They now lose the series in Arlington to the Rangers who are still in line, you know, running through that division and trying to get into the playoffs and playing better baseball. As of late, we have mentioned, you know, they have won 11 of 14 prior to the series with the Brewers, now have won the first two games in this series. I thought Chad Patrick was overall pretty solid tonight. I really do. And I I thought I I and you guys know this if you’re listeners, everydayers to the Lockdown Brewers postcast, you know, I’ve kind of always been a Chad Patrick guy, but I thought the cutter was working tonight. I thought he looked really good. He got himself in a little bit of jam. Obviously, in the fifth inning, 80 pitches thrown this evening. He did strike out six batters. the three walks obviously a big issue. Two of those three walks uh were you know eventually came around to score. Aaron Ashby also coming out uh in relief this evening and and unlike Aaron Ashby tonight and and and again wasn’t a bad outing by Aaron Ashby but again you got to give credit where credit’s due to the you know the Rangers offense. He was an inning in twothirds four hits allowed and uh two earned runs for Aaron Ashby and that was your your five runs there scored. We also saw a clean performance from Grant Anderson and Tobias Meyers out of the bullpen in this one. So all in all, I would say this probably, you know, Monday night again, you know, it’s it’s one mistake from José Canana that is the difference really in that game. And I know it was a five nothing loss, but he he makes that one mistake inside to Helman on Monday. And that’s your grand slam. That’s your overall your difference in that game. Tonight it was like it the the Brewers were aggressive at the plate. They were they were also patient. They took their walks as well. Uh you know, Jack Lighter on the other side of the mount only going four and two/3s and he had been really good prior to the series uh his appearance tonight against the Brewers. He had been really really good only four and two/3s and he had thrown almost 90 pitches against this Brewers team with only two walks. So that tells you that the Brewers were were taking good pitches, following off good pitches. You know, their approach to the to the plate was no difference. But tonight, the Brewers got brewered by Michael Helman unfortunately in this one. Robin Bryce Terrain hitting his own home run, you know, two-run home run, having a couple of other defensive gems out in center field and overall frustrating way for the Brewers to drop this series. A lot of hard-hit balls just not finding the gaps, not finding any holes, and uh hitting them all right to the Texas defense. And the Brewers falling to 89 and 57 now on the season. 43 and 31 away from American Family Field. And as we have mentioned, it makes a little bit worse that both the Cubs and the Phillies winning this evening. So the Brewers lead in the National League Central goes from seven and a half games to just six and a half games. Again, not many, you know, weeks left of this regular season. I am not in in in any concern with the National League. I am a little bit concerned with the number one overall seed in the National League based on the Brewers strength of schedule remaining left in this season and of course the injuries to this Brewers team. Now, it does help that over the course of these first two games in Arlington, you really haven’t had to dip into your horses out of the bullpen. Give a lot of credit to Jose Canana on Monday night. Aaron Ashby, Grant Anderson, and Tobias Myers eating the, you know, final handful of innings in this one after Chad Patrick exited after four and oneirds. Brewers losing five to four. I know a lot of you are lined up. A lot of you are on the YouTube chat. A lot of you have some frustrations, some concerns going forward with this team. Let’s dive into all of that coming up after this. Today’s Lockdown Brewers postcast is brought to you by Monarch Money. They did leave eight guys on base. I think if you want to point at something frustrating, the Brewers in back-to-back innings in the first and second, had guys in scoring position early to kind of make a a a stand, make a a statement, I should say, on Jack Lighter, who got the start for Texas. They failed to do so. The Rangers plating a few early runs. The Brewers playing catchup. Michael Helman, the difference in this one, we mentioned it over and over. Robin Bryce terrain of a two-run home run and hitting one of his own. So, a a frustrating one, frustrating loss, I should say, for our Brewers. They fall to 89 and 57 on the season. Your thoughts, your reactions. We begin with every day. Cody, I don’t think frustration begins to cover how these two games have made me feel. Can’t buy a hit. Seems we are hitting right at somebody. Yeah, that that was the most frustrating thing for me. It’s I mean the exit vo for the Brewers. We mentioned Christian Yellis on Monday night. Each one of his outs were over 100 miles per hour tonight. No difference you know you know no different for anybody uh for Milwaukee. The last out of the game made again by Christian Yelich. A liner right to Helman at center field. Anywhere else that ball is hit and we’re talking about probably a tied ball game, right? We’re talking about a game that that’s knotted up. Bryce Terrain’s home run that should have been probably in most parks is a home run. And I know there’s some frustrations with the uh with the Texas stadium there in Arlington. So, uh it’s certainly it was frustrating because it wasn’t by a lack of of opportunities that the Brewers let slip by. It’s it’s that they it felt like they were just hitting him right to a defender. But unfortunately, that you know, as Pat Murphy will say, that’s just baseball. Sometimes it bounces your way, sometimes it doesn’t. Gcap over on YouTube, part of our everydayers. Definitely feel like the club as a whole just turns off when Chad Patrick is on the mound. in that game tying Homer was definitely the last nail in the coffin I feel for him. Yeah, and you could see it on his face. It was just middle in again on Helman. Sort of in the same area, same mistake that Jose Canana made on Michael Helman just 24 hours prior to that. And again, I Chad Patrick was a huge piece for this team early on in the year. Remember when this Brewers team was just asking you and I basically to go out there and start ball games, Chad Patrick kind of stepped in, kind of took control, kind of, you know, sort of took a a very uneasy situation and made it feel okay. Uh, and and it’s kind of been up and down, right? He had two starts in August. Chad Patrick that did I I mentioned his start this evening in Texas striking out the first three batters and it felt like okay like this kind of feels like the Chad Patrick we saw earlier in the season and and let’s see if he can you know can kind of level out and and again just some bad luck offensively for this Brewers team who had opportunities as we mentioned early in this one every day or Nick I don’t know if it’s bad luck or what but yesesh crew cannot catch a break I wasn’t a fan personally of pulling Patrick in the fifth but at the end of the Okay, same issues. Not enough runs driven in. And and again, I will say this, like the Brewers, they let a few opportunities slip and and you guys will know this. Everydayers, people that listen to the program, I will call the Brewers out if they had, you know, dropped the ball on, you know, the offensive night, but they didn’t. It’s not like they had tons of opportunities in this one with runners in scoring position outside of the first two innings. Not many opportunities came back offensively for the Brewers. finished tonight two for six, left eight guys stranded on base. That’s certainly frustrating. Uh but they did put up four runs. They put up three runs in the fifth inning. It just hasn’t been consistent enough in this series. We mentioned it prior to the Jake Bowers home run in the top half of the ninth inning in the fifth where the Brewers scored three runs. That had been the only inning prior to the Jake Bowers home run where the Brewers had scored in this entire, you know, first two games of this series in Texas. So, that’s the frustrating part about it because they have allowed a sort of these opportunities to kind of escape them. Uh, and but again, it’s not like they’re failing to put the ball in play. You know, I I know that that was a big thing earlier in the year. The Brewers have kind of fixed that really since second week of June, you know, on in, you know, through the month of August and kind of had put the ball in play in Texas. I shouldn’t say kind of, they certainly did. And it just felt like tonight, you know, and Monday night just right at somebody. So, it was it it was frustrating. It was uh you know something that you know it’s not going to make you feel better waking up and seeing the Cubs win and the Phillies win and us lose. However, I still have full full belief full belief in this team. I I I trust them. I trust manager Pat Murphy. I’m not hitting the panic button whatsoever. Even on back-to-back losses, the Rangers six games over 500. Still in contention for their division. Still in contention for an American League playoff birth. So, they’re playing for something. And there certainly prior to the series with the Brewers had been playing better baseball every day. Jacob, I know I’m not the only one that thinks this, but we probably caught the Rangers at the wrong time when we when they are playing well. Kudos to them. We’ll bounce back with Freddy on the mound tomorrow. I didn’t even read the comment prior to what I was saying right before I brought Jacob’s comment into the show and and I couldn’t have you said it better than I did, Jacob, because I completely agree with you. It’s just one of those things, right? It’s just one of those things that unfortunately it’s not, you know, you don’t want to just, you know, sweep it under the rug and let it go and be like, well, you tried, pat you on the back, maybe get him tomorrow. Tonight, it felt like that was just kind of the game, right? I mean, Bryce Terrain did everything he could to to drive that ball out to center field. Michael Helman just made a hell of a play and that’s just kind of the reality of lo, you know, wins and losses sometimes in Major League Baseball. How many games, look at these first two serieses, right? Texas had two hits yesterday and were up 4- nothing on José Canano, who had a perfect game going into the fourth inning. Tonight, the Brewers go up 3-1. Right away, 10 minutes later, the Rangers respond by plating a few runs of their own in the fifth inning, four to be exact, and responding right away. How many times have the Brewers done that to opposing teams over the course of the last three months? Feels like almost every night, right? The Brewers got Brewer the first two games of this series, and it certainly has been frustrating. Isaiah, speaking of frustrating, says, “You’re up 3-1. Do your darn job and shut down the order.” That’s fair. I mean, I I completely understand, but I understand, you know, that sometimes other teams are just going to are going to have an answer, going to have a response, and that was no different tonight for the Texas Rangers. Everyday, Charles, three and a half games up on Phillies. I know the division is basically wrapped up barring a catastrophic collapse, but that one seed is something to keep an eye on and and right now that would be the one thing personally I’m keeping an eye on. Now, I will always say I’m always looking at the Cubs score because I would always root for a Cubs loss no matter where the Brewers are in the standings, no matter where the Cubs are in the standings. But I agree mostly with Charles. The one seed is the one thing I’m keeping an eye on. And and you go back, I don’t know, week, two weeks ago where that series of the Phillies, that’s equally frustrating because it felt like in that moment the Brewers were the better team in all three of those games and they weren’t a obviously able to win that series. They win this season series. So, they do have the tiebreaker over the Phillies, but it felt like at American Family Field that was a good opportunity and the Brewers let that one slip and and that was a frustrating uh series for them and and has kind of been an up and down, you know, since that uh that home stand for the Brewers a couple weeks ago. Glory Days Sports Consulting over on YouTube. He says, “Brewers fans, RAX, Brewers are going to come back home and clinch a playoff spot. NL Central and the number one seed.” Yeah, the Brewers had an opportunity pending a handful of different results to clinch a spot in the uh postseason. The postseason we all know is inevitable. They’re going to get there. It’s obviously the big thing that everybody’s going to be paying attention to is is what uh seed that they’re able to clinch. And I do have a lot of faith in this team. I know they’re going to clinch the National League Central Division. And again, keep this in mind. As much as you and I are frustrating, as much as you and I are upset and and a little bit angry and and and just overall pissed off at the way the ball did or did not bounce in this series, the Cubs are still chasing the Brewers. Phillies are still chasing the Brewers. The Brewers are the top dog right now in baseball. Are we comfortable overall the National League? Not yet. You know, as Charles had mentioned, just a handful of games up on the Phillies, but I have faith in this Brewers team. They’ve been resilient all season long in a couple of losses in Texas again where they were right there and either one of those games could have bounced in their direction. I still have the utmost confidence in this team going forward. But it is frustrating and I understand the frustration amongst fans because I share it with each and every one of you. That’ll do it for tonight’s program. My thanks once again, as always, to each and every one of you. Thank you guys for always tuning in. Thank you for always making Lockdown Brewers part of your day each and every day. So, if you’re into football and maybe want to celebrate a a Freddy Peralta win in game three against those Rangers, tune in to us over there at the Lockdown Packers uh channel at 7:15. And we’ll pick things back up with the Cardinals coming into town over the weekend. As always, my thanks to each and every one of you. Thank you as always for making lockdown brewers part of your day. And we will talk to you in a few days. and win, lose, or draw. Even though it’s frustrating, it is always go Brewers. Have a good one, everyone. See you.
The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their second straight in Texas, falling 5-4 to the Rangers. Chad Patrick gave up three runs over 4.1 innings in the start, while Rangers rookie Jack Leiter matched him with three earned runs in 4.2 innings. The turning point came courtesy of Michael Helman — first robbing Brice Turang of a two-run homer, then blasting a two-run shot of his own. With the loss and a Cubs win, Milwaukee’s NL Central lead shrinks to 6.5 games.

Very clever Brandon, "What the Hell(man). Lol."
I was rooting for Chad Patrick in that game. But, Murphy maybe said it best in that Chad Patrick still makes some rookie mistakes. Having said that, Chad Patrick still provides a decent start. I don't think he had the type of elite performance that was needed to cement a post season start. What is a typical "elite performance?" Probably looking at 6 shutout innings pitched .
Dominic Controneo makes a good point in that Tobias Myers might be used more as the closer. I like that. Wouldn't that be a decent conversion for Tobias? Going from starting last season, to tailing off that level as a starter, to becoming a top tier leverage arm in the bullpen.
Controneo knows more baseball in the tip of his pinky finger than I know in baseball altogether. Still, someone should tell Controneo that Brewer fans don't care about the wildcard spot. Lol, he continues to make it seem like we're all on the edge of our seat trying to mathmatically get into the 3rd wildcard spot. Right now us Brewer fans want the #1 seed in all of baseball. That's what we're looking at, and that's what we're concerned about. Having the one seed will give the Brewers homefield through the world series which is awesome.
Brandon, love your positive enthusiasm for the Brewers this year. Keep up the great attention to everyday details. Like these last two games you gave a great descriptor, "The Brewers got brewered."
All right. We found our new Brewer Killer. Let's talk turkey with Texas about a trade for this guy in the offseason. If you can't beat him, assimilate him.
