Rookie camp kicks off. And this year, I’m going to talk about the structure of rookie camp a little bit for you. The structure is broken up into a couple of different parts. There are only two days, Wednesday and Thursday, the 10th and 11th of September where the team is in Sandy, Utah at their facility there. That’s where they’re going to be on ice in Utah for that portion of the program. Then the scene is actually going to shift up to Colorado uh for the 20 thou or 2025 Rookie Showcase Tournament. Now, this is a chance to really see those youngsters in action against other teams rookies. So, you can tell some things by doing drills, by doing scrimmages, going against one another. But there’s always, I think, a little bit in the back of the minds of some of these players that you don’t want to injure a teammate. You don’t want to injure yourself. uh going all out. I think even when it is a threeon three against your own teammates is I just think it’s a little different. So when you introduce competition into the matchup and you play against in this case they’ll play the Colorado and the Vegas rookies and I’ll give you the schedule for that here in a minute. That brings up the intensity quite a bit and that is really what we’re looking forward to here. I cannot wait to see how these teams uh prepare and then are able to go against one another here and and just, you know, you like to get a good sense of what players can do in a game situation. And these are going to be full-on game situations. So, this is not going to be, oh, we’re doing a three-on-ree tournament and we’re doing short lines or anything like that. No, it’s going to be formatted like a real game. You’re going to play five on five. If they go to overtime, it’ll go threeon three. If it’s still tied after overtime, you go to a shootout. So, this is as real as it gets and you’re going against the best of the best for the other team’s rookies as well. So, you have a chance to not only make a name for yourself, but also for your team and you get to build up a little bit of the rivalry along the way. We just did an episode yesterday on rivalries and we got some great responses out of that. I think a lot of people are still carrying a torch for the Ducks which I think is fantastic. Um, but Vegas and Colorado are two of the teams that we talked about. Those are going to be the two opponents in this showcase tournament in Colorado. So, here’s the schedule for that. Friday the 12th, Utah is going to be technically the road team at Colorado. So, what does that mean? Well, they’re all playing in the same facility. But the reason you want to figure out who’s home, whose road, line changes, um being able to switch ends, all those things that would, you know, if they do make it to a shootout, getting to pick your shooter, all that stuff that are the benefits and privileges, if you will, of a home team, they will be the road team. Utah’s the road team against Colorado. 600 p.m. Mountain time on Friday the 12th. Saturday the 13th, they play again. This time, Utah will be considered the home team as they take on the Vegas Golden Knights rookies. That is at 300 p.m. Mountain time. So again, Friday the 12th, 6 p.m. Mountain time, Utah’s at Colorado’s rookies. And then Saturday the 13th, 300 p.m. Mountain time, Utah is the home team against the Vegas Golden Knights. But it is all at the same place in Colorado. It’s a little rookie tournament. They do a little shootout showcase. Uh and it’s going to be an awful lot of fun to track that. So, this is the real McCoy getting underway for these guys. So, a lot of the rookies, and I’m I’m going to show you the roster in a little bit, but a lot of the rookies, uh, number one, the first thing you want to do is make a name for yourself. That is the most important thing you can do is stand out. This is your chance to show off how you’ve improved in the offseason, how your game has elevated itself. And when players are drafted, even the ones drafted this summer, they meet with team representatives, they’re given a game plan and they are given a specific workout plan. They are given skill development to do. It’s almost, and if you will, it’s homework for players if you want to think of it like that. You’re assigned a checklist A, B, C, and D. Okay, you want to pass the test? Now is your first chance here in rookie camp. Some of these players, I think it is understood, are a little further down the pecking order and that they will get a chance to make their impact here if they can, but not necessarily expected to be breakthroughs this year. Some of these players, I dare say there’s an expectation on them in rookie camp. You want to see some guys come in and be as dominant as they can, and the pressure is on these younger players. This is the first place if you want to make the Mammoth opening night roster. This is probably the first spot where you’re going to be able to impress somebody. So, there’s 27 players coming to camp. I’m going to put the roster up here. For those of you on YouTube, you’ll be able to see this, but for those listening in, I will read the roster off for you. The 27 players breaks down as follows. There’s 15 forwards, nine defensemen, and three goalenders. And I’m gonna talk about each group. And uh the goalenders are kind of an interesting case here because they are all on amateur tryyout agreements. I’ll talk about that as well. The forwards Owen Allard, uh Maxim Barbashev, Cole Bod, Denil Boot, Caleb Deoy, uh Coer Dunn, Carson Harmer, Tijla, Michael Kunch, uh Sam Lipkin, Julian Lutz, Mo Matika, N. Nord, Jack Rickettts, Gabe Smith, defenseman Artim Duda, uh Terrell Goldsmith, Ludvig Loftton, Maverick Lamaroo, Thomas Lavois, Max Sinichka, Dimmitri Shemichev, Graden Strohack, and Vitivisn. The goalenders are Ivans Kuarins, Steppon Sherean, and Andre Stbachic. So, the goalenders I want to talk about first because they are all on what they call amateur triyout agreements. Meaning those ATO’s are, if you’ve heard PTO’s, professional try out agreement, amateur triyout agreement. You’re bringing these guys in to get a look at them. They’re not signed. They’re not your property. They’re not under contract, but they could be in the future if you like what you see. It’s actually pretty critical for the goalenders to be able to make an impression here if they want to stick with the Mammoth organization. So, while none of these players are appearing in your prospect pool heading into rookie camp, maybe they are impressed with one of them enough to want to take a longer look, maybe sign them, maybe at least bring them to camp uh if they can or or keep them in mind for the future or maybe they impress and they end up going somewhere else. But so I I tell you that to say I don’t think the focus of this camp is necessarily going to be on the goalenders. I think there’s going to be some players we’re all interested to see uh as far as what they can do and how they’re going to be able to develop their skills here at the NHL level playing against not only one another but as I mentioned before those different rookies in the showcase. Uh and look, the pressure is going to be on the six former first round picks. Now, Caleb Denoy, we know he had wrist surgery. Um, so I’m not entirely sure what, if anything, uh, he’s going to be able to show us a camp. So, this summer, the Mammoth sat down with DOY and were comfortable enough to draft him. And that’s one thing that GM Bill Armstrong went out of his way to say, “Look, if there’s a player with a medical concern, we, meaning the mammoth, will be as thorough as they can to make sure they’re comfortable with whatever that medical concern means.” So, in this case, it meant surgery. Uh, and as we found out in hindsight, do played all of last year basically with bad wrists. Still had an amazing season. I mean, wow. Phenomenal knowing now what I know that he actually was doing it injured. So, that’s crazy to me. But, uh, again, having the surgery, electing to have the surgery, the recovery period, some guys are faster than others, but it’s going to remain to be seen what he’s going to be able to show us in the first part of the season, if anything, through rookie camp, development camp, and into training camp. Uh, so I have kind of low expectations there. He said his goal would be, “Boy, if I could make the team, I’d love to make the team.” The surgery has kind of, I think, put that on the back burner. Um, he’s probably not going to really be someone to consider for this year’s team. However, of those six former first round picks, okay, so he’s the one from this year, but previously now 2024, you’ve got Tia Ginla and Cole Bo. And even though that’s only a year removed from being drafted, I expect big things out of both of these guys. And we’ll talk more about that here in just a moment. 2023 first rounders, Dmitri Shimiche, Denil B. Both of these guys coming over from Russia. Both of them won a championship with locomotive. High expectations here. And the the old man, the gray beard of the rookies, 2022 firstrounder, Maverick Lamaroo. So, all of them have different pressures on them, and I’m going to explain those for you here in just a moment. And today’s show brought to you by Monarch Money. Now, I already talked about why this is such an incredible first impression chance for everybody who is on that 27 person roster. It is their chance to come out and impress. Now, some of the names we’ve seen before, some of them we know before. A couple of these guys have played NHL games. Maverick Glamouru is one of them. And I’m going to start talking about him. The pressure for I know I say older, tongue and cheek older. How how much older is this guy really? Not much. But the point is he’s still coming to the rookie camp, but Lamar has played games in the NHL, has played in the American Hockey League with the Tucson Road Runners. The pressure on him is different than it would be on someone who was picked in 2025. And I think that’s the important thing to recognize is everybody’s playing for a different reason, a different impression. Not to say that Ta Gin doesn’t have a shot or Cole Boent doesn’t have a shot at making this year’s team. Sure they do. If they come in and they are clearly NHL ready and they force themselves into a spot on the roster, guess what? That’s a problem NHL GMs love to have. Now, at the outset, heading into camp, we are not locked on mammoth. We are not expecting those rookies to really have a place without earning it. I don’t think there’s a rookie on this team that you’ve already penciled into the roster. I think the roster has more of a veteran look and feel to it. It’s young in some spots, don’t get me wrong. You still have your Gunthers and Coolies of the world. But those players are established NHL players and have spent some time already in the NHL. If a rookie wants to make this Mammoth team, it’s not like some other teams in the league where they’re going to count on two, maybe even three rookies to have some sort of impact. The Mammoth have the luxury of not needing that. And that’s why the pressure is on a guy like Maverick Lamaru. If he wants to make the team out of camp, he’s got to prove that he’s better than somebody who’s in front of him. He has to displace. And I’m not even thinking necessarily he’s going to displace an Ian Cole or an H Schmidt. Uh and it doesn’t do you any good to have him as your seventh D because then he’s not playing and you’d rather have a youngster playing and developing than sitting uh either in the press box or maybe only getting if if they do dress seven defensive which sometimes they do in in Utah. Um what 5 10 minutes a night that’s not helping. So if he’s going to make the team, he actually would have to in my mind beat out a Sergeev jersey, Marino or Ma. Well, good luck. That’s tough. That’s a tall order. But if he does that, that makes one of those players expendable. That makes room on the roster. That means you can now trade an asset. And if you remember when we were talking about a couple of episodes ago, Cap Room and knowing that the Mammoth, while they have Cap Room, if you’re going to go take a big swing at someone and try to make a trade, either bring in a big name for Toronto or how would you fit someone on the roster even in free agency and knowing you got to pay Logan Culie, the way you do that is with entry- level contracts. When you’re doing out bigger money, you need those ELC players to hit. And that is the important part of this. So, while those younger players are still under their ELC’s or perhaps they’ve signed a bridge deal, which is still economical, you need to have those players hit because then it allows you to move someone who might make three, four, five, six, $7 million off the roster. It’s hard to do. It’s a hard balance, but you’ve got to juggle it in the NHL. And that’s why it’s so important to bring your prospects along. Now, I want to go talk about the 2024 first rounders, Gina and Bet. two different reasons. Number one, again, last year was kind of a lost season, and it’s hard not to feel bad because he really had high hopes and expectations of going back to junior, playing center the whole year, really learning how to be a center at a high level because it’s a different responsibility than being a winger. And I think there was so much excitement to see his development last year and then he gets hurt and misses over half the season and and that was disappointing. Not a huge setback in the development because he appears to be 100% physically healthy which is super important but it was disappointing from the standpoint of boy now maybe a lose a year where you hoped he’d you know maybe have a shot of making the team this year. Well as it turns out he’s had a heck of a rehab session in a great off season. looks big, looks in shape, uh looked really good at that upper deck rookie showcase at the beginning of September. Now, the focus and the spotlight will be on TJ Ginla because he wasn’t able to participate in the summer camp uh in the contact drills or anything like that and you’re okay. Well, we’ll see. Now, he’s ready to go. So, I actually kind of think he’s going to be like a bull in a china shop here. Uh and hopefully he stays healthy. We’ll knock some wood here, right? Uh that he stays healthy, but boy, he could be a factor and that’s going to be a big big factor if he’s able to break through. So very exciting for him and his draftmate Cole Boen probably made the biggest gain year over year when he showed up in the summer. You want to talk about a guy who took it seriously as far as training and really looked like, and it’s cliche to say, but these players are growing from boys to men. Isn’t there a group like that? Uh, but they’re going from boys to men and they are as they get into their 20s, they start to fill out, they start to, especially the ones who do train and who do really get in the gym and take their nutrition seriously and their recovery and all that. They can put on meaningful weight that doesn’t slow them down, but makes them stronger, harder to play against. It makes them better in all facets of their game. and I think he was one of the guys, if not the guy that impressed the most year-over-year gains. So, I can’t wait to see what he’s going to do, and that could be very impactful as well. Now, look, again, I I think there’s a lot of stock to be put in what they’re going to be able to do against the Colorado and Vegas rookies because you’re competing against players who should be around your same level. And if you are head and shoulders above them, that’s going to turn some heads before the big teams training camp starts here. So, that’s going to be an important one. Couple other guys I’m going to throw the rookie roster back up here that I want to look at. We talk about Chimashv and boot because Bill Armstrong mentioned that he thought they might be NHL ready. So, they immediately have advanced consideration coming over to North America to be able to talk those players over to North America. I’m sure a big part of talking them into coming and leaving the KHL, leaving a championship locomotive team was, yes, you have a great shot at making this team. And right now, there does not appear to be room on the roster for them either. So, that’s going to be another consideration that I think will be very, very interesting for this Mammoth team to see how they do. Couple other guys I want to circle are Tim Duda. He’s one of the older defenseman in this rookie group. I think there’s pressure on Duda to show that he’s going to make that leap from being a road runner to a potential NHLer one day. And a guy that I’m actually pretty interested to see how he’s going to do is Max Senichka, who was a little bit of a later round draft pick this year, but I think has some real sleeper potential. So, that’s just me personally. I really want to see Senichka on the ice. See what he’s going to be able to bring uh to the team and and what he looks like out there, how his game fits in with the Utah Mammoth. So, talking about this rookie camp coming up, there’s an awful lot of big things on the horizon for the Mammoth. And again, it all kicks off here. If you’re seeing this on Wednesday, it kicks off today and tomorrow as well. Thursday, they’re in Sandy, Utah before they go to Colorado for the rest of the Rookie Showcase Friday and Saturday. Friday at 6 PM Mountain time, they’re playing Colorado. And then Saturday at 3 p.m. Mountain time, they’re playing the Vegas Golden Knights. All right, more coming your way here in just a moment. That means we’re also counting it down to getting the regular season training camp going and taking a look at the schedule. So, the action going on through the 13th uh is the last game of this rookie showcase. Then the team will jump in for training camp. Immediately after that, the first time you’re going to see fullon mammoth going at it is split squad games. And again, I split squad games are nice. They can tell you something, but I think other teams are a little more indicative of it. On the 21st, which is a Sunday, there’s going to be a split squad game against Colorado at 2:30 Mountain. That’s going to be uh up in Idaho. If you remember, they’re heading up there for that. And then there’s going to be another one as well at 6:30. So keep that in mind. But then this is where the fun starts on September 22nd, 2 days before my birthday. Shop early, shop often. Uh the Anaheim Ducks, 8:00 Mountain time, and they start with three games on the road in the preseason. But the 22nd of September, that’s the first look we’re going to see at potential mammoth who could make the team. Uh, a little bit of what the roster shakeout’s going to look like. I don’t expect that you’re going to have necessarily concrete pairings of D and forwards. I think you’re going to see a little mix and match, a little bit of, hey, does this guy work here? Maybe some players have earned an opportunity out of rookie camp. Then on September 25th, that’s an 8:00 Mountain time game against the Vegas Golden Knights. and the 30th of September uh at the LA Kings. That is going to be 7:00 Mountain time. Believe it or not, the first two games are going to be broadcast on Utah 16 and Victory Plus. And then on the 25th, it’s Utah 16 and Scripts. So, you’ll be able to watch those games, will be able to watch those games. And how could you not be excited to see the coverage what’s coming up for this Utah Mammoth hockey team and this rookie camp? It might be easy for you to gloss over or think as a fan, eh, this isn’t really a big deal, give me the main entree here. I want the main course. Well, yeah, me too. All of us do. However, for the Mammoth in particular, I think because of how packed the roster is up top, there’s going to be a sense of urgency at this rookie camp. And that to me means it’s going to be more competitive. It’s going to be more dynamic. I expect more things to come out of this. There’s going to be storylines and we’re going to track them for you, of course, here on Locked on Mammoth. But I’m really interested to see how this one is going to kind of play itself out here over the next well, what 5 days or so. All right.
