🔴LIVE 🔴Washington Nationals VS Miami Marlins/September 11/ Envivo live /MLB THE SHOW 25

has an NL East matchup. It’s the Washington Nationals taking on the Miami Marlins. And now, first pitch coming your way next. [Music] Miami. So, almost ready to get underway. Our starter in this one, Yuri Perez. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Yeah. And as Whip tells you, he’s been pretty effective this year on the mound. I mean, opposing hitters having a hard time getting on base and then being able to really distract him and do damage in terms of getting around the base path. So, taking the mound, this is a guy you want out there if you’re his teammate. And I expect him to be good in this one. CJ Abrams, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one, fouled off left side. Next offering way upstairs. pulls that one foul. A little anxious on that change up right there and tells you he’s ready to hit a fast ball. If he can let that thing get deeper as he recognizes it out of the head, tell you what, he could be circling the bases. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. [Applause] James Wood getting ready to hit liner and that should be extra bases around first heading for two into second and he’s got a double. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Fast ball pretty much middle middle and that’s what you fall asleep dreaming about as a hitter. So no surprise he put a great swing on it. So the go-ahehead run in scoring position and now the switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. He’s done a great job making contact recently. Can make it a fivegame hitting streak with a knock in this one. Runner at second here. One gone. And that one fouled off. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. Just couldn’t catch up. Here’s the O2. And that one is inside ball one. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one, two. Don’t miss in the zone because that’s where you can get hurt. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. Here comes Wood around third and he can’t come up with it. Puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI. Just one of those scene high base hits through the infield. He just kind of rolled over on it a little bit, but sometimes those can find a hole and get you a knock. And stepping in is the speedy Dalen Lyle. Just missed. [Music] Next pitch is outside. Man at first, one away. Ruer takes off in the air left field down the line and that is a foul ball. [Music] The count two and one right through there for a strike. Goodness, I think he just took the best pitch he’s going to see in this at bat. You don’t get many like that in that location. I don’t know if you take that pitch against any pitcher out there on the mound. And it remains two and two. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Eighth pitch of the at bat coming up. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming in the dirt. Blocked 3-2 and ball four. Oh, looking for a swing anding miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call pitch. Neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. First and second, one out. And now it’s Luis Garcia. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. This might be the most pressure you put on this guy today. You got one run in, you got to try to get another one or maybe two. Two on, one out. Clips the outside corner and a count even one and one. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. Ground ball. Could be two. Edwards to second. And that’s two. But the RBI single pushes across a run. It’s now one- nothing. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in Miami and towing the slab here, Kade Cavali. Chris, how about a scouting report? Well, no doubt about it. He’s going to have to put together some consistently good performances in order to bring that erra down. Now, he’s got good stuff. He’s just got to be able to have confidence, trust it, and really go after hitters, not nibble. trust that his stuff can have late life in miss barrels of bats. Xavier Edwards leading things off and takes a strike. Slice the other way and foul. [Music] that one the other way. The throw to first, one up, one down. And let’s take a look at the lineup. And Chris, this group has been struggling to put up runs lately. Well, they haven’t been on base a ton. And even when they are, they haven’t been hitting very well with runners on base. So, they need a player or two to really step up, have some quality at bats, hit according to the situation, and sort of break out of this. I think if they do, the rest of this lineup will follow. Jacob Marcy in the box with one away as he takes ball one. That’s in there. And it’s one and one out there on the mound. He’s setting the tone early with the fast ball. 98 mph up on the scoreboard. And a ball evens a count. That one just misses. Really good take, especially with two strikes. goes down looking. I’m not saying it it wasn’t a strike or, you know, it was a ball, whatever. But just the location with that velocity, it’s hard enough just even if the velocity is not great, but that velocity, that location, tip your cap. Augustine Ramirez now at the plate. Fast for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Ball one there. He never moved cuz he never had time to with that kind of velocity. You’d prefer that pitcher work away. Off the mark there. Two and one. was a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Struck him out looking and the Marlins down quietly. They trail here one- nothing. back here at Lone Depot Park. And now the catcher comes up to him. Riley Adams. Marlins. Perez back to work. Adams getting the starting catcher, batting sixth in today’s lineup. And he was a third round pick back in 2017. And that one is in the dirt. And that’s ball two. Not showing great command so far in this at bat. 20 count. He’s got to execute here or this could get ugly. Fast ball for a strike. [Music] [Music] drilled out towards left center field. That one’s back there. Going gone and they add a run. It’s two nothing. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. lightning fast hands to be able to hit that velocity fast ball on the inside part of the plate. In my experience, when you’re looking out over the plate, allowing the ball to travel, it’s pure reaction to hit a pitch in that location. That’s a tremendous swing. And it’s fouled away. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the top of the second. And now the count is even. Aside to home plate duty is Ricky Holiday. Boo. And something I’ve heard players saying about Ricky strike zone is how he will call the high strike. That could be something that’s tough to deal with, especially if you’ve got a pitcher out there coming at you with high velocity. This one smoked on its way out of here. He muscles that one out the opposite way. It’s three nothing. Backto back jacks and this club is fired up right now. Boog. I mean, this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup feeding off each other and the collective confidence just continues to grow. Up now for Washington, Dylan Cruz. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. swing and a foul out of play. [Music] 98 at the knees and she couldn’t connect. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. That missed by a lot and the count is even. Two and two. Swings through that and it’s a strike out and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. And now here’s a speed threat outfielder Robert Hassel the third and that’s a little bit high. One and0 that’s in there. probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. That one pushed to the left and fouled. You could see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch, but just a little tardy on the fast ball. Battling here as he fouls it away. Still only one out here in the inning. in the air to left center. Marcy on the move to the alley. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And there are two outs. CJ Abs. Here’s CJ Abrams to hit. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. Take it high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. Swing and a miss. That’s strike one. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. [Music] That misses. Now one and two. I don’t like to say he wasted a pitch. I think that was a purpose pitch. Change the eye level. Have him look up. Now go back exactly where you want to go. Two out. Space is empty. And that skips in the dirt. Well, this is a guy that can be frustrating for pitchers because he fouls off so many pitches and grinds out the at bat. I’m sure there’s sometimes where a pitcher would rather just give up a first pitch single than have to waste six or seven pitches on one hitter. Two outs. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. gets a piece and stays alive. Hit on the ground to the right side and that’s just foul. Two two now and a foul ball. He stays alive. About to see the 11th pitch of the atbat here. 99 mph to finish him off. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now 3 nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s the third baseman, Otto Lopez. Lopez. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. There’s a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. on the ground right side to first. One up, one down. First baseman Liam. Now it’s going to be Liam Hicks. Lifted in the air out to left and a couple of quick outs. [Music] batting six. Two out, space is empty. Ariberto Hernandez, the next up for the Marlins. That clips the zone and it’s 0 and one. down to the dirt, swing, and a miss. One ball, two strike in the air, fairly deep to right field, makes the catch, and over. Nothing across here this half. We head on down to the top of the third. It’s the Nationals three and the Marlins nothing. Top half of the third inning. And here’s the DH for Washington. James Wood. This kid picked up in a trade. A lot was offered and given to get him. But he’s got a real high ceiling. First pitch misses. Been a rough start on the mound for this guy. this third inning. So important for him to get on track, turn the page, settle in, do all those things you need to do to give your team a little bit of length in this one. Slashes this one and it could be trouble around first and hustling for second. In safely, it’s a double and his second hit. He has had such a good day today. I don’t think he’s going to want to leave when it’s over. Couple of doubles today for the DH. Here’s Josh Bell. Singled and drove in a run his first time through. Pitch misses and it’s one and0. Man at second. Hammered down the right side but foul. Look out. That ball was smoked. Man, I am so relieved that they have this netting down the line just ensure safety for the fans. Last thing as a player, you want to look up and see a fan get hit. Just missed. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Valente Beoo up and loosening in the pen. Number 66 getting loose as well. Miami and a two-1 on the way. Fast ball is outside. Get ready for some action here. Good RBI guy at the plate. Runners in scoring position and a hitter count. And ball four to a board. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. First and second, no outs. Dalen Lyall will hit next. Foul ball there. [Music] That one finds the zone. That is strike two. Wood at second. Bell out at first with nobody out. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Just overmatched on that fast ball right there. And it wasn’t like he was set up for it by something off speed earlier in the at bat. Just came right after him with three straight and he had no answer for it. Now it’s the second baseman, Luis Garcia. He hit into a double play his first time up. And a slider in there for a strike. Though Chris through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Kicks and fires. Fought off foul. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. And ball one. This guy at the dish excels in two strike counts. Got to be careful with him out there on the mound. What a stop. The throw to second is offline. Everybody’s going to be safe. Up next for the Nationals catcher Riley Adams. Now the Marlins manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Yuri Perez out of the game and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. Here’s a new pitcher from the pen, Valente Beoozo. Well, he’s been hit pretty hard at times this season as you see with the big RA. So, this is an important outing for him to get on the right track. So, they’re all loaded up. Riley Adams digging in for the Nationals. He’s already homerred here in this one. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Base is loaded. One away. Swing and a miss. One and one. Defense. Got him. Outside pitch. Got the better of him that time. Well, that’s always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count. And as a pitcher, it really allows you to start expanding the zone. Hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide. And what happens is because of the pressure, you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is. And that’s what leads to the strikeout. Now it’s Paul D. Young up to the plate inside. Almost got him. Big moment in this game. Two outs, two runners in scoring position and could really break this thing wide open early. Pressure’s on right here. Two count. Base is loaded. You don’t want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on. He’s got to challenge the hitter right here. Next offering is in for a strike. Hey, it’s still early in this ball game, but you know, this at bat right here could be a big factor in the outcome. You think about it, there’s a chance to really blow this thing open right here. Line drive. This one could be trouble. One runs in. Now the second run is in. Coming home. He’s in there. Three run score. Well, they call that an advantage count for a reason. You’re so much more likely to get something you can handle. Pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field gap. And I’m sure he’s going to be watching that one back on video because that’s the kind of swing you want to bottle. So many positives that led to that knock. So, two down and now up for Washington, Dylan Cruz. He was a strikeout victim his first time. Ground ball to the right side and foul ball. Man on second, two down. Swinging a foul straight back. Ruer at second. Two down. Swang and a miss. Struck him out. That ends the inning. and stops things from getting out of hand. Three runs, only two hits, an error, and one left. We head now to the home half of inning number three. It’s the national six and the Marlins nothing. Set for the bottom of the third. Here’s the left fielder, Troy Johnston. Troy Johnston clearly down in this ball game and you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing. It’s got to come one at bat at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch. Make that guy on the mound work to get you out. Swinging a highf fly ball out there towards left field. Makes the catch for the out. Batting eight, the short stop. Moximo A. Costa the next up for the Marlins. Good power. Not great in the OBP department. Check swing and he went strike one. One out. Base is empty. And there’s a foul ball. The shorts stop takes a ball that misses the zone. Two and two. Caught him looking for the K. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Hassle. And that is the third out of the inning. And we’re back. And now the center fielder, Robert Hassel the third. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Bezo, he’s one of those guys who uses the cut fast ball as his primary offering and when it’s on, it can induce a lot of weak contact. And the late movement on the cutter is really what makes it so effective because as a hitter, you make a decision whether you’re going to swing or take a pitch before it actually gets into the zone. So that late movement causes it to miss the barrel of the bat, sometimes miss the bat entirely. And that one is inside. Tell fans a little bit about the difference between a cutter and a slider. Well, a cutter looks more like a fast ball, but it has that late movement like a slider that’s hard to pick up. Now, with a slider, it’s a little slower. The spin is different, and sometimes you can recognize that. And it tends to break a lot more horizontally and vertically than the cutter. on the ground and it goes just foul. Three and two payoff pitch hit in the air center field. Marcy under this one and out number one on the grab. Now batting short stop. So the Nets lineup turns over. Here’s CJ Abrams now. Bowl for two in this one. [Music] Just missed. [Music] And that’s downstairs and the count now two and nothing. Struggled a little bit in this one. couple of strikeouts earlier, but doing a much better job in this at bat to get ahead and find a good hitters count at two and 0. And another ball [Music] and he walked him. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at first. James Wood digging in for the Nationals. on the corner for a strike. Runner on the go. Pitch in for a strike. Transfer bobbled and there’s no throw. [Music] Hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Well, that at bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strikeout. You’ve got to be better at the plate right there. At least to foul something off, extend that at bat. Josh Bell at the plate now. He’s been a great free agent sign. That one inside. And that’s ball one. On the inside corner for a strike. One way to make a guy real uncomfortable at the plate is pound him inside with good velocity. They’re doing that right here. Abrams at second with two down. [Music] Fouls that off to the left and will do it again. [Music] Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Good job to fight that one off. Hey, you got this. And a one, two again. And he’ll do it again. Two outs. And that misses off the outside edge. Ninth pitch of the at bat. Do next. Hard hit left field. Base hit. Coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate. Safe. And the runner from second scores on the play. It’s seven to nothing. Two outs, runner at first. Next to hit for the Nats, Dalon Lyle. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. And he swings and misses and it’s nothing and one. One run across in the frame so far. Top half of inning number four. And that one a little below the knees and it’s a ball and a strike. And that’s outside. [Music] Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. throws, stops the lead runner at second. Two on and two out. Couple of singles back to back. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know, they used to say, “Charge it.” Crazy. Next to hit, Luis Garcia. That’s a strike going one. [Music] Swung on. Belted. That’s back. And it’s gone. He sends it out of here. His 14th of the year. And they throw three on the board. It’s 10 nothing. cutter inside can be a bat breaker. You have to catch it out front to get the barrel to it. Does a really good job recognizing it early, getting the bat head to it, and hitting it out of the ballpark. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Valente Beayoo will depart. We’ll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound. New pitcher for the Marlins, number 66. And he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one in innings, so he’ll be tough to get to. Two outs. Nobody on. Riley Adams digging in for the Nationals. He’s already homerred in this game. Went with the sweeper, but it misses. That one inside two and 0. And it stays fair. Makes the turn and heads for second. The throw in, but he’s in there easily, man. He just absolutely turned on that one. Ripped it down the line. Nice job of staying his mechanics. man in scoring position with two away. Paul D Young digging in for the Nationals right through there for a strike. Next offering misses and now it’s even one and one. Two outs and one in scoring position. Ground ball left side and that’s just fouled. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. Another homer, his second home run of the game. It’s 12 nothing. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop. And they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one, Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. [Applause] A breaking ball on the inside part of the plate requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics. If you fly open with the front shoulder, there’s no way you keep that ball fair. An outstanding job mechanically. He deserves that home run. Now it’s the right fielder Dylan Cruz who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. That pitch in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. [Music] That one missing inside. And that curveball drops in there for a strike. Nothing but curve ball so far in the at bat. Kind of makes it difficult as a hitter to know what to look for because you start wondering if he’ll keep coming with it or if they’ll try to speed you up. And that’s down. A base hit and that keeps the inning alive. I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Up now for Washington. Robert Hassel to third. Late swing fouled to the left. Now snap throw to first and he’s back in safely. The next offering misses and it’s one and one. No, he’s really working him away this at bat. sometimes take a little bit off velocity, try to get a rollover, something on the ground, stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. That’s a ball. Tried to attack with a sweeper. He’s getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit. Let’s see if he can settle himself down. Swinging a ground ball and foul ball. Cruz leads off first with two down to the inning. Next offering is outside. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. On the ground, right side into the outfield. Base hit and out to a board. Backto back singles. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. So, up next, CJ Abrams. A walk and a pair of strikeouts. And the pitch is in for a strike. 0 and one. Corners are occupied with two down. ground ball right side to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Well, that’s a great effort with two outs and he displayed why it’s so important to get out of the box quickly. There’s no time to waste on these plays. And that hustle down the line to beat the throw really earned him that run. First and second, two down. Next is the designated hitter, James. That one ripped right center field. This one could be trouble. One run across Abrams around third. He’ll score. Two runs are in. Now that first base Josh Bell. Now the Marlins manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Number 66 is done and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now pitching. So the Marlins go with a new arm. Michael Peterson. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. Man at second here with two away. Josh Bell digging in for the Nationals. Starting to go after it now. A look down to third. Yes, he did. That’s a swing. That one missed. [Music] bows it off. Still one and two. And that’s a little bit high. Foul ball left side. He’ll see another [Music] man at second. And now the count filled up. Three and two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Man on second, two down. So now two on and two outs. You get a walk and you get a walk. Everyone gets a walk. Boo. At the plate, Dalen Lyall. Swings through the fast ball up in the zone. Two aboard, two outs. outside low and that’s ball one. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So, it’s a good take by him at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. One ball, two strike and delivers outside. Two outs. Couple of base runners at first and second. swing and a high-fly ball left field. Pretty well struck. Holds it in on the warning track, but two round trippers in this inning. The long ball was working. On now to the bottom of the fourth, Major League Baseball is on the show. Back here in Miami, John Chambi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Xavier Edwards. Edwards. Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. He’s been incredibly efficient in this one. first pitch strike percentage over 70%. That’s well above league average and that’s what’s allowed him to pitch well up to this point. Backed off the plate that time and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Well, every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse. Go after hitters and get quick outs on the ground to third. He gets there with the slide to first. Got him. Nice play. Just so impressed with the movement on that play. Footwork was excellent. The arm strength was there. And of course, the most important part was getting the out. And up next for Miami, Jacob Marcy. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. One down. Base is empty. He swings and fouls one off. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Some heat there at 98 m anph. Boo gets talked about a lot, but a good high fast ball in a two strike situation, it’s just become such a problem for hitters in more recent years. I mean, with all of the emphasis by pitchers on developing that spin rate, having a good grip on the baseball, those high fast balls, they kind of look like to the hitter that they’re rising, even though they’re not, but they’re not decreasing in velocity and spin rate. So, very difficult to get the barrel on it. Two down. Swing and a ball lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. That one’s back. on an absolute smash to left. Home run number 20 on the year and they’re on the board. It’s 15-1. [Applause] They thought he could blow a high fast ball by him, but he was ready for it. Look at how quickly he jumped on that pitch. [Applause] So, two away with nobody on. Now, here’s the cleanup hitter for Miami, Otto Lopez. That one hit to right. Cruz pulls it in on the run. One for the Marlins on the solo shot. We played four. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. This one isn’t exactly close. Chris, let’s go off script for a moment. I’m game. Were we on script? Never. All right, Singi, you’ve tightened up the hairdo, but back when you played, how valuable was it to have a barber in the clubhouse? Well, Boo, I’m going to say invaluable. That’s how valuable that it was because I was the barber. Yes, I was the team barber, man. I’d be cutting hair 7:05 game. I’d be finishing cutting someone’s hair at 6:45. Whoa. And I’d ask these guys, you’re making millions of dollars. Why can’t you go to a stylist and get your hair done? You’re coming to the clubhouse pressuring me to cut your hair before a game. Marcy makes a nice grab at a full sprint. Every day during batting practice, these outfielders get about 10 minutes of balls in the gaps. They practice this and when the game comes, they make the play perfectly. Adams batting with one down. Takes a strike. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. And a foul ball. Would they pay you? No. Absolutely not. Not even a meal on the road. So, I think it’s great now that most of these teams have professional barbers that come in and make them look fresh before the games. scale of one to 10, how good a barber were you? For a non-professional, I’d say I was probably a seven. But if I was comparing to professionals, I’d be like a three. I’ll never forget the time that I cut Joseé Conco’s hair. He had a pretty big melon boo. And uh big dome. It It took a while. Yeah. There’s a little pressure there, too, because he had a big date that night, and he wanted me to make sure that everything looked good. Wow. Yeah. He’s a big guy, too. I didn’t want him to hurt me. Yeah. He’s large. that one 95 to finish him off. Came inside with that two strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got them up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. Did a nice job right there. Two outs. And that is in for a strike. And it’s 0 and two. Ripped to third. Sends it to first. And that is the inning. Offense held in check there. Last half of the fifth coming up. The Nats lead it 15-1. We head to the bottom of the fifth and here is Liam Hicks. Hicks goes 5 feet 9 in 25 years old. He’s actually a former rule five draft pick. You know, these Marlins from what we’ve seen, I think it’s fair to wonder if they’ve been too patient at the plate. They found themselves behind in the count quite a bit. They’re trying to be patient, but it’s mostly resulting in outs, not base runners. And you could argue it’s making things more difficult at the plate. Ariberto Hernandez the next up for the Marlins. Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out with that fast ball. Even though it’s high velocity, you’ve got to live on the outer edges. When it’s right on a tee, right down the middle, professional hitters are not going to have a problem turning it around. Stepping in Troy Johnston. He’s 0 for one. That’s off the mark. And that is ball one. There’s the strike. No outs. Runners at first and second on the ground right side. Four, six, three, and they turn the double play. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. And at the plate for Miami, Moximo Aosta struck out looking in his first at bat. Miami [Music] in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate. Miami. Hammers that one deep left field and forget it. his fourth home run of the season. It’s 153. [Applause] There was a sinker up in the zone. It looked like it came out of the pitcher’s hand a little bit too early. Doesn’t have the velocity that that good for four seam fast does. And at the plate, he didn’t miss it. Victor Mesa Jr. the next up for the Marlins. First pitch and he just misses. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. Two down. down the line and that will drop. Foul. That’s down and in. Fouls it back with two strikes. And it remains two and two. Base is empty, two away, but two runs are in. Last half of inning number five. That one back up the middle and it gets through. Xavier Edwards gets a chance to hit here. Has grounded out a couple of times. And that is out of play. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one. way inside. Gets out of the way. Mesa off of first with two away. And there’s a ball. A rare three ball count here. He’s been throwing strikes all day. Got to be ready to hit if you’re in the box. Swing and a ball lifted in the air right field. He just missed it. And that is that. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. We’re through five. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in Lone Depot Park digging in. Dylan Cruz. Peterson back to work. Fast ball in for a strike. 0 and one. Miami’s bullpen with some action. Adam Maer, the rookie right-hander, is getting loose. Soraniano also throwing and that misses and the count is one and one. Swing and a miss. He was late. Strike two. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. That’s too low. And it’s two and two. [Music] Got him swinging. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. Hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. Miami Pessle stands in now and watches strike one. Ball one there [Music] and that one fouled off. The Nationals up big in this one and we’re the top half of the sixth. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Kind of a weird pitch and a weird swing on that strike out. It’s just a slider that caught a lot of the plate. I’d say a very hitable location, but in the box I think he just gave up on it way too early and by the time he realized it was dropping into the zone, he just fires off a really poor swing. Abrams in the box now as he leaves that one up high on the ground right side. Come on. Whips it to first. Nats go down one, two, three. Well, we go bottom six now. The number two hitter, Jacob Marcy. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. Ball one. Activity in the Washington bullpen. Number 50. The rookie left-hander appears to be getting going. Rebalta, the right-hander, loosening up as well. And the one right through there for a strike. Next offering in there for a strike. And the count is one and two. That one lifted to left. Lyall moving under this one. Nabs it. One down. Now batting number 15, Augustine Ramirez, the next up for the Marlins. Swinging a foul straight back. [Music] Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Smoked on the ground to second. Nice throw from short right to get him. Two gone. Now batting third base. Otto Lopez digs in. Now it’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. Two outs that misses off the outside edge. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Hard ground ball, base knock and that extends the inning. And now for the Marlins, Liam Hicks. [Music] [Music] a little bit high maybe. And that’s ball one. Swings through that one out in front that time. two strike out towards right center. That’s well struck and that one is off the wall. Lopez around third. He’ll score. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Kate Cavali won’t go any further tonight. Not his best performance, but he leaves with the lead. And we’ll get a new arm into the game after this. On the mound now, number 61. He last pitched two days ago, Brad Lord. So, a man aboard and next is the designated hitter, Ariberto Hernandez. Inside, just missed man at second. a bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. Just missed. Got the bat going too soon. It’s strike two. Runner at second. Two down here in the bottom of the six. That misses the zone. Counts full. Three and two on the inside corner for called strike three. A run on two hits and they leave one. We’re through six full. Nationals lead this one 15-4. And welcome back to the ballpark. We go to the top of the seventh. And here’s the DH for Washington. James Wood [Music] and takes low for ball one. [Music] late on that fast ball. [Music] So, a foul ball makes it one and two. That one almost got him. still two and two after the foul ball. Fights it off. He’ll see another on the ground and it goes just foul. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. Hard hit left side. throws across the diamond. He made the pitcher earn that out after a long at bat. Josh Bell. And now Josh Bell. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Just off the outside edge. That one fouled off. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Base is empty, one away here in the top half of inning number seven. Swang get a ball popped up. Out number two. Good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. They look really good coming in, but so hard to get on top of as a hitter. Dalen Lyle digging in for the Nationals. Pitch misses. One and0. That one missed. Swing and a line drive ripped out into left center field. That’ll touch down for a hit around first heading for two to second. Pulls him off the bag. Well, when you fall behind in the count, you’ve got to come into the zone and then guys have a better chance of hitting the ball hard like he did right there. Man in scoring position with two away. And now up for Washington, Luis Garcia. and foul ball. Lyall stands at second with two gone. Popped in the air left field. Johnston makes the play and that is that. water. [Music] And we’re back. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now the left fielder Troy Johnston. Johnston. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. gets under and pops it up. Abrams makes the grab and there’s one down. Now batting the short stop, Moximo. Next to hit, Moximo A. Costa. Miami very high with that one and that is ball one. Swings here and drives one well left field way back and you can’t forget it. Another homer. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. It’s 155. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I could feel that swing from the booth. [Applause] We take another look as Stackcast tells us that ball took off at 110 mph and plenty of distance as well. I mean, that was an impressive home run. Boog. He squared it up and knew it was gone. So digging in, Victor Mesa Jr. tap foul at the plate. One out. Base is empty and a run in here. The bottom of the seventh. The next pitch misses. One and one. And there’s a ball. Popped foul out of play off to the right. [Music] 2-2 now outside with a breaking ball. [Music] That’s ball four. Tried another fast ball but missed the spot. My partner known for being a touch hacktastic. All right. You walked 130 times. Oh my goodness. In your career. I can’t even believe I can’t I win 13. Yeah. I I I don’t even seriously I don’t believe that. Edwards stands in now. Looks at that one inside. Almost got him. and a foul ball. Two- two now. Swang and a ball lifted in the air. Lyle snags it. That’s out number two. Now batting number 87, Jacob Marcy the next to hit. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. And that’s outside. And that’s ball one. Mesa the runner at first with two gone. That’s in there. And it’s one and one. Foul ball. Two outs in the air. Right field. Cruz. He’s there. He’s got it. And that will end the inning. One in the inning. And it comes from a rather unlikely power source. We look ahead to inning number eight. Back after this on the show. Back here in Miami. Here’s the catcher, Riley Adams. Foul ball there. Highfly ball lifted in the air right field. Mesa under it and there’s one down. Now batting third base Paul Young. Next to hit for the Nats, Paul D. Young. And the way he’s going in this one, we’ve been waiting for his spot to come around again. All right, listen everyone. Stop what you’re doing right now. This guy’s got two home runs already. Now he’s going for number three. That one’s in there. It’s 0 and one. Right through there for a strike. That one down the line and that’s just fouled. Flew open a little bit with that front shoulder but was able to slow his bat down just enough to make contact with that pitch. Keep the bat alive and down on strikes. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Didn’t agree with the call at the plate right there. Now again a game like this that’s just too close to take. It’s a blowout game. Guys have been out here for a while. Umpire saying, “Hey, let’s go. Cut it loose. Swing the bat.” Now a screamer into the outfield. Marcy right there to make the grab. And that’ll do it. No runs, no hits, no errors. Last half of the eighth coming up. Nationals on top 15 to five. Bottom of the eighth. Now it’s the Marlins catcher. Augustine Ramirez. That just misses. Ball one. Next offering is fouled back. Swings through that one for strike two. Next pitch is outside. gets a piece and stays alive. Battling here as he fouls it away. swinging a drive deep right field and it gets into the corner but it’s fouled [Music] spoils that one and it remains two and two and a base hit up the middle he saw a lot of pitches in that at bat and found a way to win the battle well he really to battle for that one. Man, that was so fun to watch. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Now, here is Otto Lopez. Yep, that ball went out. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. Ramirez aboard here at first with nobody out. Fast ball for a strike. Well, the leadoff man gets on. And you want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. Headed towards the corner and that’s a foul ball. Swings and blasts one deep to left center and it’s a one hopper off the wall. Should be extra bases coming home. Throw is offline and he scores. It’s 15-6. [Applause] Liam Hicks the next up for the Marlins. Drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. fought off foul. [Music] Sliced hard but foul. One on, nobody out. A run in near the bottom half of the eighth inning. That one way inside. Foul ball. Still a one and two count. No outs. Runner on second. fouls it off. Still one and two. And that just misses. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. And now it’s filled up. swung on, popped up on the infield, Abrams. And there’s one down. Now batting designated hitter. Ariberto Hernandez. The next up for the Marlins, one for three. That clips the inside corner for a strike. One out and a runner at second. And it’s fouled away. This one popped up. Foul ground first base side. Bell pulls it down and there’s two gone. Ball’s just not carrying to first tonight. Now, you would actually say that to your teammate in the dugout. No, I’m not that cruel, but someone would say it to me, and I’m sure it’s probably been said before. So, two down now. And here is Troy Johnston 0 for three in this one. Smoke to right center. And this one’s going to go out of here. Into the second deck it goes. His second of the year. And they throw a pair on the board. It’s 158. First pitch hacking. And it paid off for him in a big way. [Applause] Love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat. You watch him from the on deck circle so when you step in the box, you’re ready to pull the trigger wherever it’s at. Really good job by the hitter. Total conviction on that swing. [Applause] Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Number 61 won’t go any further. And as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with the new pitcher after this break. [Music] Now on the mound for the Nationals, number 50. Compared to some days, this is a pretty low leverage appearance for him. So he should be fairly free and easy out there. Still have to keep yourself sharp and attack the strike zone. There we go. Moximo A. Costa the next up for the Marlins. Outside low. Ball one. Two down. Nobody on that one. A little bit high and the count is 2 and 0. And that one in the air center field and that’ll do it. But they strike for three in the inning. Two on this two-run home run through eight full. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, George Soraniano. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. Robert Hasseli digging in for the Nationals. Robert Hassel. And the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still finds a way to get off a throw. Safe at first as they can’t make the play. Pretty much gifted a leadoff base runner right there. And as an offense, this is where you really want to take advantage. apply some pressure this inning. Make that error hurt. Back to the top of the order now and the batter will be the shorts stop CJ Abrams and fires in a fast ball at 95. Nobody out. Runner at first. The shorts stop takes the ball. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. Very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with it. Hard but foul off to the left. This one in the dirt. [Music] Ruer at first with no outs here. swing and a ball lifted left field. Johnston puts it away for the out and there’s one away. Now batting the designated hitter James Wood. Next for the Nationals is the DH James Wood. You talk about the power and the speed together. Well, we knew he was going to be a stud just coming up. Making his way through the minor leagues and quickly at this level an impact player. Well struck right field and it hits the fence. Lead runner touches second headed for third. Coming home the relay to third and he’s in there as a run scores. Everything came together for him. Came screaming off the bat. And I’m sure exit velocity is off the charts. No doubt he squared that baseball up perfectly. So there was no fluke to that triple by any means. One down. Next is switch hitting first baseman Josh Bell. [Music] Ball one. No strikes. [Music] just missed. This is a situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended. What you have to be careful of is that pitch that’s up that’s in on your hands. That’ll pop you up in the infield and that’s exactly what the pitcher wants. next offering in there for a strike. And now two balls and two strikes. Spoils a two strike pitch and he’ll see another one away with a runner at third. here in the top of the ninth. Keeps the bat going with a foul ball. Sets him down on strikes. That was pretty nasty. Oh, just a beautiful fast ball on the inside corner for that backwards K right there. I think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle. So, I got to think he was looking away and just got locked up by the hard stuff boring in on his hands. Lyall stands in here, leaves that one off the inside. [Music] Come on, Miami. Delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Fast ball is outside. Two outs. Yeah, that’s fouled off. and ball four to a board. Second walk of the game for him and he’s been really patient at the plate. A game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. Luis Garcia getting ready to hit. Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. Now, if he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch right side. And that’s the third out. One run in the inning, but they leave two. And 912 scheduled to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Nationals out in front here 16-8. Back here at Lone Depot Park all set for the bottom of the ninth. And at the plate for Miami, Victor Mesa Jr. and first offering is fouled off. Swing and a foul out of play. In the air, left field. Lyall sizing this one up. He’s got it. One away. Now batting second. Now it’s the Marlins leadoff hitter, Xavier Edwards. Edwards. Check swing called stride. The Fish with a lot of ground to make up. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning now. One and one. And that one upstairs. Swing and a miss. Two balls, two strikes. The count. I think he was a little excited there. Saw the fast ball, but needed a step ladder to get to that one. He’s going to have to tighten it back up. He wants to have a good at bat. And down on strikes he goes. That’s out number two. Two strikes. Many times hitters looking out over the plate. When you’re looking out over the plate, you’re also going to let the ball travel a little bit longer. And a fast ball zipped on the inside corner just locks you up. And first offering is fouled off. Two down, nobody on here in the last half of inning number nine. Next one misses and it’s a ball and a strike. They’re down to their final strike. One strike away. sends it to center and that’s going to do it. Makes the catch. Ball game and the Nationals take this one in a blowout. Well, as much action as there was in this one, really impressive performance from the bats on the winning side. They gave up quite a few runs, but they still blew him out of the water. They have to be feeling pretty good about themselves offensively right now. Well, this one ends in a blowout for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the show. I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
