THIS Saints Rookie Is About To Take Over The NFL… Here’s WHY!
You’re watching Saints Now by chat sports. As always, I am your host, Trizy Trace Gerard. Thank you so much for tuning in to today’s content. Kell Moore has announced that rookie safety Yonis Sanker is going to be filling in for Julian Blackman after his injury. He said other players will be rotating in, but it sounds like Sanker is going to get a bulk of the work there. Shout out to my guy Ross Jackson, friend of the program and friend of mine. So, I want to show some love to Yonas Sanker. Obviously, Julian Blackman is out because he’s getting surgery this week on his shoulder. If you want the rookie to have a big, big day against San Francisco, like this video and show the rook some love. Go have yourself a day. Yonas Sanker. [Music] We’re going to dive into why I believe Yonas Sanker is set up for success and kind of just get you hyped for this player. Because reminder, Julian Blackman after playing 100% of the snaps on defense in week one, he is getting surgery on his shoulder this week, which means we are going to be turning to a very, very exciting rookie to fill in for the safety role next to Justin Reed. Now, obviously, there’s been a lot of turnover in the safety room. The Saints, they had last year Tyron Matthew, Will Harris. Fast forward to free agency, it’s Tyron Matthew, Justin Reed, and then you go to the draft. And then you have Tyron Matthew, Justin Reed, Yonas Sanker, and then Tyron Matthew retires. Then you have Justin Reed, Yonas Sanker, and then the Saints signed Julian Blackman. So it’s Justin Reed, Julian Blackman. And so now you’re back to square one of Justin Reed, Jonas Sanker. He was a third round pick, number 93 overall out of Virginia. During his time at in college, he was praised for being a versatile, rangy, physical safety. He can line up anywhere on the field. He can line up anywhere as a DB. And he was extremely extremely productive in Virginia. Fun fact, led the ACC in total or in solo tackles in 2023 and in 2024. Taking a look at the numbers throughout his collegiate career, 176 career solo tackles, 273 total tackles for loss, four career forced fumbles, and one of those was returned for a touchdown. So, that’s pretty cool. But Yonas Sanker was really, really exciting for Virginia. Was really, really interesting as a player. And he, like I said, lines up all over the place. 961 snaps in the box, 573 at free safety, 745 at the slot. You know what I see right here? I see 500 plus snaps at three very, very important positions that safeties are asked to line up in. So, to this point, I think the New Orleans Saints could not have a better option than Yonas Sanker. And in my opinion, I thought that his tape stuck out like a sore thumb during the preeason. Yonas Sanker put together a really, really, really nice summer. He was praised at training camp. He was praised at OTAAS. He was praised at mini camp. He was praised at the preeason. He was praised by players, praised by a coaching staff, praised by fans. He is a guy who definitely stuck out during the preseason. And I think that he is a player who can make a very very positive impact especially the longer he gets to play. Kell Moore also giving him some praise saying uh you know his physicality is something that sticks out. He was asked what about his game is noticeable to you and he said certainly his physicality but to think he plays it in a manner that is still sound. He’s not reckless. I thought he had a ton of examples through preseason football that he showed up in the team meetings every week because of these big aggressive plays. I do believe Yonas Sanker is set up to have a really nice week. I think that he’s a guy who as we look to the foreseeable future could be a really really nice addition to this defense. And to be honest, I’m really really eager to watch number 33 take the field for the black and gold. Now, can we get 33 new subscribers on this video out of respect and out of love for Yona Sanker? That would actually be awesome. 33 subs for number 33. Come on now. Let’s make it happen. Sub for Sanker. And if you want the Saints to win, sub for dubs. This is also a really, really good opportunity for Yonas Sanker as a young player, as somebody who likely was going to be viewed as the future of the safety position. I think that this is a really, really nice chance for him to learn, to grow, to develop, to get some real action, some real reps at 100% speed when it really, really matters. And to be honest, I think that this is a team against the NerS that it’s a pretty good roster to have this test against. And we’re going to dive into all of that, why, and then some a little bit extra here in just one moment. But ladies and gentlemen, I just want to say welcome. Welcome to the most wonderful time of the year. Fall weather, it’s back. Football is on. Your lady friend, she just threw some banana bread in the oven. You got a pumpkin spice latte. Well, look at this. This offense does not strike fear into me. M. Jones, he’s a statue as a quarterback. Christian McAffrey, very, very good running back. Very, very good weapon. Like him a lot. Joan Jennings, dealing with some injuries right now. Ricky Pieraw, I like him. Still young, but I really like him as a player for what it’s worth. Jake Tongis caught his first passes last week against the Seattle Seahawks and then also caught one of those which was a gamewinning touchdown to give them the lead late in the game. Look, this is not a very very dangerous 49ers offense. You could have Brock Perie, Brandon Iuk, George KD, Ricky Pearl, Jawan Jennings, Christian McCaffrey, Brian Robinson Jr. like you could have a really loaded offense, but instead it’s M. Jones, Cmac, Joan Jennings, maybe Ricky Pierce, all Jake Tonges. I just think that this is a really good opportunity not just to gain confidence, not just to get real game action in real time, but also to learn more and get more comfortable playing next to uh Justin Reed. And for what it’s worth, I think Justin Reed is a really, really nice player to have alongside Yonas Sanker because of how good he is as a communicator and how good of a leader he is and how nice and complimentary he can be to Yonas Sanker. And I think that both of those players can complement one each other or can complement one each other can complement each other. I can’t say that right. They can complement each other very very well and complement one another. That’s what I was trying to say. They can complement one another very very well. Now, during the off season, there was a lot of praise around the tandem of Justin Reed and Yonas Sinker. Remember, the Saints didn’t bring Julian Blackman in until Tyron Matthew retired right before training camp. So, Justin Reed and Yonas Sanker already have some run together. They’ve been able to get reps together, and they’ve been notably praised by coaches, by players, by fans, and everyone in between. So, I do think that the Saints safety room and the Saints defense is set up for short-term success right now, as well as long-term success with the development and the further growth of some of these guys on the roster. Practice squad players, you could see one, if not both of these players get elevated. I would say between the two, Terrell Burg is probably the guy who gets the elevation. And, you know, for me, I don’t look at these two players and say, “Yep, those are going to be the difference makers. Those are going to be the guys.” It’s gonna be Yonas Sanker. Sure, Jordan Hound’s around. Sure, you have um some other depth in this DB room as well. I I this is this is an opportunity for Yonas Sanker, though. This is Yonas Sanker’s chance. Jordan Hen doesn’t have the pedigree that Yonas Sanker does. I think that the best option moving forward for the black and gold is Jonas Sanker. I think that you need to start him. I think you need to put him on the field. I think you need to give him opportunities to cook. I think that the worst decision you can make would be to go and sign somebody that you don’t that won’t make a difference. I think the best thing you could do is to develop and work with and work around the young talent you have because it’s important to turn young talent into young experience and that experience can thus turn into growth development and you can have a rookie turn into an allpro type of player. Now if you are insistent on going and signing somebody although I think it might be a bad idea there are some options available. The three that I’m most interested in to be totally honest, uh Justin Simmons, Marcus Williams, Jordan Whitehead, maybe maybe Von Bell, maybe Marcus May, probably not. Again, I just go back to I think the best option rolling with Yonas Sanker. So, show the kids some love. Show the rookie some love. the guy who got the game ceiling pick um or the game tying pick should have had a second left still Lopez. I’m still not over that by the way. There is one second left. But show him some love. Send Yonas Sanker some good vibes in the comments section. Type his jersey number. Just show him some love. I know a lot of Saints players watch this content. So I want the locker room to see that we’re rolling with them. We believe in the rookie and number 33 is going to have a great day. My name is Tracy Trace Gerard. This has been Saints Now by Chat Sports. We will see you on game day. Y’all stay golden. [Music]
New Orleans Saints news headlines this edition of Saints now as a Saints rookie will play a big factor in the teams’ matchup with the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2 of the 2025 NFL season. Rookie safety Jonas Sanker will have a prominent role in the Saints defense in Week 2 and the rest of the 2025 NFL season after it was announced this week that starting safety Julian Blackmon will miss the rest of the season after tearing his labrum in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals. Sanker was a third round pick by the Black and Gold in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Virginia, and now will pair up with free agent acquisition Justin Reid as the safety duo for the majority of 2025. Saints Now host Trizzy trace Girouard is here to inform the Who Dat Nation on the Saints rookie safety as well as highlight what Sanker will bring to the Saints’ defensive unit.
