🔴LIVE🔴St Louis Cardinals VS Seattle Mariners /September 08/ Envivo/ MLB The show 25

show. It’s the St. Louis Cardinals taking on the Seattle Mariners. And we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. So, just about set and today’s starter, Luis Castillo. What do you have on him? And a guy like this is going to keep you in the ball game. He’s going to go out there, compete. Not going to see a whole lot of flare and flash, but he’s going to hand it over to the bullpen at some point. And if you’ve been able to score a few runs, you’ll be in it late. So, we’ll see if he’s able to do that for his club in this one. Now, up for St. Louis, Lars Nbar. Sliced hard but fouled down the left side. First pitch. the pitch and that one is inside. Here’s a batter who for whatever reasons plays better on the road and that should help him here today. And that one fouled off. That’s out to center field. Robless under it and he makes the catch and there’s one down. Here’s a Cardinals lineup now and singing. I’m a bit surprised to see this many righties in the lineup against a right-hander. Yeah, you’re not the only one, Boo. I’m a bit surprised as well. And you know, some hitters work well against same-handed pitching. You know, just back in 2024, Bobby Whit Jr., Vlad Guerrero Jr., and Aaron Judge all had higher batting averages against righties than they did against lefties. So maybe they got a plan after all. Come on, Luis. That one fouled off. Well, he gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone. I’m sure he’s kicking himself and would like that pitch again. That’s in there. 0 and two. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement on the ground and that’s just foul. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Got him swinging for the strike out. Some high cheese for strike three. But that kind of velocity, an elevated fastball, even if it’s still in the strike zone, can be tough for hitters to get on top of. Nolan Gorman the next to hit takes ball one. Two outs. Base is empty. Let’s go. way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high and down on strikes he goes. And good work there as he gets a one, two, three. Redbirds down quietly. So now the Mariners offense gets to go to work for the first time. We’ve got no score. It’s Major League Baseball and it’s on the show. Back in Seattle towing the slab in today’s game. Riley O’Brien having a pretty ridiculous season so far. Singy. Yeah, you see there with the sub two erra. Very dependable guy and he’s been pretty much lights out so far this season. So, you know, when a guy like this takes the mound boo, I’m expecting to watch him get into a rhythm quickly and just move through a ball game. Sometimes you can see some big strikeouts. Other times it’s hard to even know he’s there because the innings go so quickly. That misses ball two. Not showing great command so far in this at bat. 20 count. He’s got to execute here or this could get ugly. And he hits a ground ball right side and it goes just foul right through there for a strike. Oh, what a stop to his knee. The throw on the money. Nice play. Look at how he dives right there. He’s able to pop up to both knees. Not enough time to get to his feet, but he threw a cannon across the diamond to get the runner. And stepping in for the Mariners, Cal Raleigh. He’s one of the best players in the game. And ball one. One down, base is empty. Breaking ball inside. And now two and 0. And another ball. And that one hit 97 on the gun. One out. Base is empty. Next pitch in for a strike. Three and two now. [Music] And they’ll do it again. [Music] Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Fly ball center field. Here, he’s got it. There’s two away. And now we check out the Mariners lineup. This is one of the best teams in the league when it comes to drawing walks, Chris. So, we’ll probably see a very patient approach from them. Yeah, Boo. And that’s often uh what leads to a lot of runs scored. You get runners on base. You work that pitch count up for the opposing pitchers and then you take advantage when they make mistakes. You get into that bullpin. You could tell that everyone up and down this lineup just comes in with a great plan of attack, a lot of patience just like you said. Julio Rodriguez in the box here lets that one go for a ball. Let’s go, Julio. Two outs. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Man, 91 on the slider right there. That’s a hard one. That’s a lowend fast ball for some pitchers. And that one hammered back there. And that one is off the wall. And that’s a double. Everything came together for him. A lot of times in today’s game, right fielders are able to get to a ball that stays in like that, but he hit that one pretty well. And if he hits it just a little bit different on the barrel, it’s out of here easily. But there’s nothing wrong with the extra bases right there. So runner at second, two down. Auheno Suarez will hit next. I’m liking the power he’s shown recently. Three homers already in this series. That one outside. One and0. Well, you always want to come out in the first inning, try to put something up on the board. It’s a big two-out double right there. See if the cleanup man can drive him in and put a tally up there on the board. Mariners. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. We refer to third base as the hot corner, but that one was a hot one on the other side of the diamond. Nice job. Quickly leaving the ground, makes the catch and that ends the inning. New inning getting started now up the Cardinals number four hitter Mason Win. He’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. Check swing and he went strike one. Boo, this guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the elite speed, the fact that they’re consistent with it, they make moves on the base paths. And now one and two. Just misses with that one. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. That one misses. Full countdown. Swing at a high-fly ball. That’s out to center. Robless snags it and there’s one down. batting fifth. And now Thomas Sajay-Z Castillo in his eighth season, 32 years old and he was born in the Dominican Republic and he swings and misses at the initial offering. And that one upstairs, ball one. Rusty Valentine doing the umpiring behind the dish for us. Maybe the best name in the league. Yeah, that’s a solid one. No doubt. I mean, who’s better to ask than you? I kind of wonder if Rusty is his actual name or just a nickname. Yeah, no clue. Anyways, Rusty’s got a good zone. Very good on the corners of the plate, but he’ll give pitchers a little bit above the letters and below the knees if they’re earning it. And a swing and a miss. Decay is his third of the game. off to a strong start, Singy, as he’s punched out three of the first five he’s faced. Well, he’s definitely minimizing contact. He can get the swing and miss when he needs it, but he’ll also keep the defense fresh behind him, allowing some balls in play as well. Offbalance throw in time. And that is the inning. And down in order go the Cardinals. We’ll go to the bottom of the second. No score. Back at T-Mobile Park, we head to the bottom of the second. The batter now, Jorge Palanco. [Music] O’Brien back to work. Swinging a foul straight back. line drive to short and caught. It’s never fun going back to the dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove. But you will get some high fives. You know, when you make great contact, you feel like you’ve done everything right. But in this game of baseball, not everything is in your control. rolled softly but that goes foul swing and a ball ripped out towards right center field. That’ll touch down for a hit. Now he’ll turn for second and he’s in with a stand up double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Off the bat, it was headed for the gap all the way. And as a hitter, you love seeing those as you take your first couple of steps out of the box. You know you got some real estate to run on. And such a good feeling. Nice liner into the gap right there. Runner in scoring position now. And a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game. So the go-ahead run in scoring position. Mitch Garver up to hit here. Come on. Up the middle to Jay-Z. Throws to first in time. Batting eight. The short stop. JP JP Crawford gets a chance to hit and this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here. [Applause] First offering and it just misses. Just missed. [Applause] Two outs and a runner at third. Bottom half of inning number two. swing and a little roller right side. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. No runs, one hit, no errors and a man left. We played two full, no score. onto the third inning and stepping in for the Cardinals, Jordan Walker. Jordan Walker, swinging a high-fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play. You know, these Cardinals, as you probably noticed, haven’t been shy at the plate at all. In fact, they’ve probably been too aggressive at times. I’m specifically talking about the first pitch. These batters are swinging more than 80% of the time, which is fine if you’re scoring runs, but that hasn’t been the case today. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Well, he went up there trying to be aggressive, that’s for sure. Hacking at those first two pitches, but clearly that last one fooled him. He could have been sitting on something else entirely. But you want to be able to adjust on 0 and two and at least get a swing off when it’s in the zone. Maybe choke up, maybe spread out your stance a little bit. You got to give the guy credit on the mound though. He went right after it. Nathan Church stands in here, takes ball one low. Out to short. Throws across the diamond and a couple of quick outs. Third base, Jose Fine. Jose Fermine digs in now. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. That pitch gets the corner. Strike one. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Tosses to the pitcher covering the bag. St. Louis goes down in order. One, two, three go to Cardinals. And we are still scoreless. And welcome back to the ballpark. Here’s Victor Robastor. What about a playing another position on defense? One that would require a little more range. Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. Swings through that one for strike one. Swings through that one for strike two. A lot of times you’ll see a pitcher maybe double up on a pitch. This guy will throw it three times, four times in a row because hitters just can’t lay off of it. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate. You know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. swing and a highf fly ball out towards right center field and puts the squeeze on that one and there are two down now batting rightielder and now for Seattle Cal Raleigh he’s not going to get cheated up there no he’s not he’s looking to do damage with every swing he takes and that one clips The corner still tied at zero. Last of the third. Caught him looking for the K. Mariners go down quietly there and we’re still knotted at zero. out of the fourth now the left fielder Lars Nbar newbar [Music] first pitch misses and another ball. [Music] Next offering misses. Three balls, no strikes. And a four pitch walk. And that’s their first base runner of the game. Definitely lost the handle during that sequence. Four pitches for the walk. Okay. And that last one didn’t even threaten the zone. Catcher might want to go talk to him. Herrera in the box now. Takes strike one. And that’s in there at the knees with two strikes. May see some movement over there at first base. Trying to stay out of the double play right here. That missed by a lot at the count one and two. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. [Applause] That one missed. Way to lay off that pitch down. [Applause] line to left. It drops in, gets away a little bit. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. Nolan Gorman. Here’s Nolan Gorman. Struck out looking his first time. And there’s a ball at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, he had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. [Applause] [Applause] stays alive. Fourth inning underway. No score. [Applause] The 2-2 Swang at a highf fly ball well struck that’s back there gone and they tack on three. It’s three nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. It’s like he’s playing whiffle ball up there. And that’s typically not the easiest way to hit a home run. To the slight opposite field into the gap. Man, making it look easy. That’s for sure. Now it’s the shortstop. Mason Win 0 for one with a fly out to center. Swanging a high-fly ball in the air left field. A Rosarena going back. Way back out of here. They do it again. Backto back homers. Home run number 10 on the year. And they tack on to their lead. It’s 4 nothing. That’s a swing that’ll boost the win probability for sure. Backto back jacks. And this club is fired up right now, Boog. I mean, this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup feeding off each other and the collective confidence just continues to grow. And now here is Thomas Sajay-Z right through there for a strike. Well, they’ve been able to score four runs off of him in this inning. And this is where you want to just max out. Get as much as you can. give him one of those tough innings where it’s going to be hard for him to recover in the next one. And that misses and the count even one and one action in the bullpen for Seattle. Ryan Woo the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. Ferguson also getting ready. That one hit to right. Raleigh has this one sized up and there’s one down. Now batting catcher Pedro Pah. And now the Cardinals catcher Pedro Pahes grounded out his first time. Foul ball there. Here’s something cool, Boog. When they finished building T-Mobile Park back in 1999, they actually opened it up in the middle of the season. I remember as a rookie with the Chicago White Socks, we opened the season at the Kingdome and then when we came back later in the year, we were playing at T-Mobile Park. It’s a beautiful place. Great scenery from center field and I always enjoyed playing here. Crawford pulls it down and there’s two gone. Now that hitter Jordan Walker, two down, base is empty. Jordan Walker now at the plate. Take it high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. And the slider just misses. Now a fly ball to right center. Robless on the move makes the grab and that’s the inning. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now a four nothing ball game. Back after this on the show. And we’re back. Ready to go. Bottom four. Now it’s the Mariners DH. Julio Rodriguez. Rodriguez. And that’s downstairs and outside. The Mariners knew what they had. signed him in July of 2017 for a little under $2 million when Rodriguez was just 16 years old out of the Dominican Republic. Hit on the ground to the right side. The flip to the pitcher covering leadoff hitter retired in the fourth. Now batting third baseman Aueno Suarez. Au Heno Suarez up to the plate. Now fast forward to 2022 for Julio Rodriguez to win the rookie of the year. The Seattle Mariners were then compensated with the 29th overall pick in the first round of the draft in 2023. part of the new CBA enticing teams to promote their good young players. The two-1 and a big swing and a miss. Generally second, third time through the lineup, you want to be able to lean on those secondary pitches and command them. Looks like he’s doing a nice job of it. Base is empty, one away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Bounced up the middle. Whips it to first on the run. Pretty nice play there. Now batting second base. [Music] Jorge Palano the next to hit. Hot shot to third. Zips it to first and Palano is out. Three up, three down, inning over. Nobody left for Seattle. They’re on the short end of a four nothing score. Now pitching on a pitch out of the pen here. number and he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. Typically at least one an inning, so he’ll be tough to get to. Now up for St. Louis, Nathan Church grounded out his first time. Woo! in his second season, 25 years old, and he was a sixthround draft pick in 2021. Swing and a miss. [Music] [Music] out into left center for a line drive base hit and the leadoff man aboard. Now batting third base and up next for St. Louis Josemine grounded out his first time up. That one catches the zone. That’s strike one. And strike two. Well, the hitter shows the pitcher that he’s willing to go after that pitch down in the zone. So perhaps he’ll come back to it. Still try to get that ground ball double play. fouled off and they’ll do it again. Church gets his lead at first with nobody out. Battling here as he fouls it away. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with the fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Ball one there. Got him. Rusty Valentine rings him up. Back to the leadoff spot in the St. Louis lineup. Lars Nbar. Next up for the Cardinals rips that one to right. Raleigh makes the play. Two-way down. Now batting the center, Ivon Herrera. And now it’s Ivon Herrera. One for two. Move to first. Church dives back in safely. First pitch just misses. Just missed. [Music] Here’s the pitch. Runner goes. That’s in for a strike. Throw to second. He’s safe. Well, I’m sure that steal will raise a couple of eyebrows because of this big lead, but I think it’s more respect for their opponent knowing that they’ve got to continue to add on if they’re going to win this game. Don’t take it as an offense. Take it as a sign of respect. On the ground right side and it gets by him. She’ll still come home with it. The throw comes in too late and a run scores. Now batting first base Nolan Gorman batt at first Nolan Gorman next up for the Cardinals. He’s already homered in this game. And first offering is fouled off. Fast ball for a strike at 95. He’s trying to stay away from this lefty, knowing that a lot of left-handers like the ball down and in. Two outs just off the inside corner and the count one and two. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Makes the sliding stop. They get the out and that’ll do it, but they pick up one run on the RBI single and the lead is now 5 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show back in Seattle. Here’s Josh Naylor. Chris, baseball today. So many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers. But this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. Fouled off left side. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits. On the ground to first and that one finds its way through and a good start to the inning. wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Man at first, nobody out. Mitch Garver up next for the Mariners. He’s 0 for one. When you look at the elite teams in the game right now, there is going to be the slug. No question about it. But the really good offensive teams combined slug with more contact with less swing and miss. And first off is fouled off. Yeah. And the domino effect of that is running up pitch counts on pitchers and then either getting them to a place of fatigue or getting into the bullpen perhaps before you get to those higher leverage arms at the back end. Next offering misses down and away. One of the things that Jim Leland used to say when I was broadcasting with the Marlins, the longer a plate appearance goes for a batter, the more likely it is that something good will happen for the hitter. Church settles under it and makes the catch. And there’s one away. They’ve got a potent lineup. And when you think about teams capable of rallying from this kind of deficit, they’re right at the top of the list. Here comes a manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pan. Riley O’Brien done for the night. And that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Chris Royoft into the game. Well, they didn’t get much length out of their starter in this one, so they’ve got a lot of outs to eat up in that bullpen. I think they’ll look for some length out of him right here if they can get it. And up next for Seattle, JP Crawford. Yeah. And I figured you would get caught into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night. That is true. Hit on the ground. Might be two. There’s one double play. And that’ll do it for the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. Five innings complete. It’s the Cardinals five and the Mariners nothing. Back at T-Mobile Park. Start of the six. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And leading off, Mason Win. Let’s go. Woo! Back to work. That’s in there. 0 and one. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Edward Bazardo getting ready to go. Ferguson, the power lefty up as well. The 01 but a short stop takes a ball. That pitch clips the outside corner. That is strike two. And that’s down and away. [Music] And that one is inside in the air. Left field. A Rosarena after it. And there’s one down. just pulled off of it a little bit right there. That front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed. If he does that, he’s going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some authority instead of a fly out to left. And first off is fouled off. Base is empty, one away. And we’re the top half of the sixth. Strike two. I think he was sitting off speed there. That’s outside and that is ball one. Swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes. Two out. Two out. Space is empty. And now the catcher comes up to him. Pedro Pah for two in this one. Seattle. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Fast ball for a strike. That’s down and in. Next offering is fouled back. Still two and two after the foul ball. That one missed. draws the walk there. One of the things about that two-out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. And there’s a foul ball. Pahes off of first with two away. Next offering is fouled back. Two outs up the middle. It’s through for a hit. They stop the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. Good two strike hitting right there, Boo. A bit of a lost start for some. So that was nicely done to beat the odds. Just kept it simple. Played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from. And there was just no one there to knock it down. Now at the plate, Nathan Church and a foul ball. And a foul ball. Two aboard, two outs. [Applause] Upstairs. And the count is one and two. [Applause] And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. gets a piece and stays alive. Swing and a miss and he got him and he’s registered three Ks in this one. No runs, a hit, two left. 91 and two scheduled to hit in the home half of the sixth. It’s the Cardinals five and the Mariners nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the sixth inning and now it’s Victor Robless up to hit Victor Robless. and the first offering a fast ball for a strike. Action in the pen down there. Andre Greno getting loose out there. Gray getting cranked up as well. The 01 swing and a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way and it’s gone. His first homer of the year. It’s 5-1. Chris, we knew this moment was coming for him soon. Yep. And it finally came. We knew it was only a matter of time before he’s going to connect with one just like that. Just too good of a hitter at the plate. [Applause] That’s the exact definition of hitting the ball where it’s pitched. Taking that outside fast ball and driving it the opposite way out of the ballpark. You want to bottle that type of approach. So the lineup flips over and stepping in for the Mariners, Randy Roserena. And that’s off the outside edge. And that’s ball one. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in here in the bottom of the six. And it’s fouled away. With the big bats coming up and a home run already surrendered, he’s really going to have to execute against these next couple of batters. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. That’s off the mark. And it’s two and two. spoils a two- strike pitch and he’ll see another. That one drilled left field and foul ball bounced to third. sends it to Gorman. They get the out on a Rosarena. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. And now for Seattle, Cal Raleigh went down looking on three pitches last time. Let’s see if he can be a little more aggressive right here. A little bit high maybe. And that’s ball one. And another ball after giving up that home run earlier. It just doesn’t seem like he wants to challenge him. And he swings and lifts one to deep center field. That’s back there. And it’s off the batter’s eye. His 54th home run of the season. It’s 52. That one just sounded different. And might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I could feel that swing from the boot. [Applause] When you’re working with this kind of velocity, so critical that you move the ball around, work quickly, and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance. Clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity. He was all over that fast ball. And now it’s Julio Rodriguez. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Still only one out here in the inning. Next offering in there for a strike. That’s strike two. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes and there’s two down. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Two down. Base is empty. So now it’s the Mariner cleanup hitter. Au Heno Suarez swinging a drive deep right field. That one’s back there. out of here. [Applause] He’ll circle the bases. Their third home run of the inning. And they inch closer. It’s 53. Tried a slider to start off the at bat. And man, did it backfire. He clearly wasn’t fooled on that pitch. [Applause] That one was a hanger. And pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there he made him pay. [Applause] Here comes the manager out of the Cardinals dugout and he’ll make a move to the pen. Chris Royoft will depart. Two-run ball game as he heads for the dugout and we’ll be back with a new pitcher. New pitcher for the Cardinals, Sunny Gray. And this is an important part of this game. Tight score and still a lot of outs to get. So they’re looking for a big outing out of him right here to get some critical outs. And up next for Seattle, Jorge Palano clips the corner and it’s 0 and one. Two down. Nobody on. Sharp grounder. That’s through for a base hit. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Wasn’t able to elevate that one, but he sure hit it hard enough to get through the infield. There’s not a whole lot of time for the defenders to react and try to make a play when it’s ripped like that. Two outs, runner at first, and now it’s Josh Naylor. That one close rule to ball and it’s one and0. That one the other way. Fair ball. Palano around second. Rounds third. Headed for the plate. Relay throw home and he’s out. Cut down and that ends the inning. Textbook defensive execution right there. Outfielder hits the cut off man. relay throw to the plate. A perfect strike and a great way to end the inning. Now pitching. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the M. Edward Bazardo. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. So digging in, Jose Fairmine. Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike. It’s 0 and one. And a swing and a miss there. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. Swing and a miss. That one in the dirt. Garber on to first. Got him. One away on the strike out. Just indecisive in that at bat. He couldn’t commit to the slider. Tried to sit in between. Just not able to put the bat on the ball. Here’s the left fielder Lars Nbar outside low ball one. Just missed. That one ripped but foul. Just missed. Breaking ball through there for a strike. Strike three and that’s two in a row. Very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he’s faced in this one. Getting them straight to work. Man, it’s talked about a lot, but relievers are just so electric these days. These aren’t fun at bats if you’re a hitter. And I’m so glad I’m retired. Pereira in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. And that one pulled foul. Cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. And he strikes out the side in the seventh. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. bottom of the inning. Now Mitch Garver Garver swing and a miss as he was out front that time. Not even close there. One ball, one strike. That clips a corner. And that’s downstairs and outside. [Music] that one ripped and a foul ball. [Applause] Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. Five foul balls in a row. I have no idea what that feels like, but you got to love this battle. Just wondering who’s gonna blink first on the ground right side. And that’s just foul. Go. And a swing and a miss. He battled for a long time, but it finishes with a strike out. You can’t be mad at yourself after an at bat like that one. A big first out here in the seventh via the punch out. Yeah, it just does so much to change the outlook of an important inning like this. I mean, you got the leadoff hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this. So, a strikeout really puts them on their heels. fought off foul. One down, base is empty, and that one sliced fouled. So glad these ballparks have installed the netting to protect the fans, keep things safer all around the league. Next offering is down low and it’s one and two. The Mariners trailing by two here in the bottom of the seventh. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. fights it off. You’ll see another. Well, he’s desperately looking for that swing and miss. He’s going to have to just change speeds a little bit, try to move it around, create just a little bit of illusion at the end. Ground ball right side and foul ball. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. right side to Jay-Z. That was a strong at bat even though he couldn’t find a way on base. Those plays can be tricky. They’re routine, but that doesn’t mean it’s always going to be smooth. He delivered a good play right there. Victor Robless getting ready to hit. He’s already homerred here in this one. handles, throws to first and the Mariners set down. One, two, three. We’re in the top of the eighth and stepping in for the Cardinals, Nolan Gorman. Bizardo measures 6 feet even 190 lbs and he was born in Venezuela. [Applause] Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. And that skips in the dirt. Good eye right there. That one ripped right center field way back there. Holds it in on the warning track. Now batting short. Mason win. Next up for the Cardinals. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. And that’s through there for a strike. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. Check swing on an 02 appeal to first and Jerry Hillsdale says he went around. Well, that bat seemed to be over as soon as it started. Three pitch strikeout. You got to be better at the plate right there at least to foul something off. extend that at bat. Two outs. Base is empty. Now up for St. Louis. Thomas Sajay-Z. That’s a slider for a strike. Lifted in the air right center field. And that is that. new arm of the mound for the Cardinals number 49. Well, the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game. Some of them are just wired different. So, we’ll see what he’s got here. Back to the top of the order now. Now the left fielder Randy Roserena 0 for three in this one that misses the zone. One and0 activity in the bullpen. Jojo Romero the closer of the staff is getting loose to finish this one off. Alcala the hardthrowing right-hander up as well. Mariners up and in. And that’s ball two. And another ball. It’s getting squeezed a little bit here late. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it could be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. [Music] Swing and a miss. Three and two now. [Music] And a swing and a miss. And one out now. Cal Raleigh up next for the Mariners. Right. Right through there for a strike. Oh, I think that pitch surprised all of us. Right down the middle. Doesn’t get a swing. Not very often you see a hitter lay off a cookie like that. [Music] Pitch misses at one and one. The 1-1 is fouled off. The Redbirds leading by two here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Mariners. Not close with that one. Two and two. Come on. Swing in a ball. Hammered left field. That one back there and out of here. Another homer. Home run number 55 on the year. It’s 54. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop. And they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one, Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage, even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. Base is empty, one away. Now it’s the Mariners DH. Julio Rodriguez one for three and misses inside. Part of the order coming through now and with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. Highfly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. looking to get the tying run on base. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. swing and a miss. Struck him out. And Chris, that’s a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base. And the defense breathes a sigh relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play. But that’s how you do it. Keep him off balance. Get him out of there and deal with the next guy. Hey, Suarez up to hit now. And they’ve got the no doubles defense set up. Outfielders playing deep, infielders guarding the lines. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Swings through that one out in front that time. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just got to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. Two outs and ball one. outside low. You’re now two balls and two strikes. [Applause] Swings and misses and one down below the zone. Pah down to first. That completes the strikeout. Inning over. One run closer for Seattle after this solo shot. It’s down to one at 54. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Carlos Vargas. Should be a good first matchup for him here. He’s been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season. They’ve had a lot of trouble squaring him off. Here’s the catcher to hit. Pedro Patcher Pedro PZ. That one finds the zone. 0 and one. Some activity in the Mariners bullpen. Andres Munoz, a right-hander with big strikeout stuff, is getting it fired up. Brash warming up as well. just missed. Next offering is in for a strike. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. Next one misses. Two balls, two strikes. And there’s a ball. Swings and misses. And a strike out for the first out here in the ninth. Next is the designated hitter, Jordan Walker. Jordan Walker. In there. And it’s 0 and one. can’t glove it cleanly, but he wins the foot race to first. Good job of knowing how much time he had there. Now batting right Nathan Church. Nathan Church digs in now. Not looking like they’ll be adding any insurance runs heading into the bottom of the ninth. So it’s going to be on the bullpen to hold this lead. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. swing and a ball drilled in the air towards right center field. Brings it in. And that is that. So they make short work of them there. Five, six, and seven will lead things off in the bottom of the ninth. It’s the Cardinals five and the M’s four. Back now. And on the mound, the closer Jojo Romero and he’s done a great job keeping the ball in the park this year. The numbers stack up with some of the best in the game. Well, one-run game and now it’s going to be Jorge Palano. Palanco just missed. Nasty back door slider. There’s really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it. So that’s a good take by him. Hard ground ball base knock off to a good start with a leadoff knock. Well, that at bat had a lot of pressure riding on it. So really great job coming through right there. It’s got to feel good. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know they used to say charge it crazy. No outs. Runner at first. Josh Naylor will hit next. That one misses. Ball one with the winning run at the plate. And the home team trying to pull it out. Swing and a miss. And the count one and one. That pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge. Just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track. One-run game. Bottom nine on the ground right side. Four, six, three. But it’s not in time. And they just get one. That play won’t be trending on social media later on, but it’s still important to execute it to perfection. This game is a lot harder than it looks, partner. Substitution being made at first. Coming in as the pinch runner, Luke. He’s two outs away. And here’s the catcher, Mitch Garver, 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. And Chris, what about the stolen base to try and get the tying run into scoring position? It’s definitely in play, and you want to see it early in this count. Just missed. Next offering in there for a strike and a count one and one. And that one fouled off on the ground to short. Could be two. Fired to second. And that’s a double play to end it. Any day of the week, a pitcher will take two for one. Nice double play to get him out of the jam. They get the W. Way to go, guys. Close one here today. And your final 54 for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
