This is the Tigers Post Cast, your instant game reaction for the Detroit Tigers, part of the Locked On podcast network. Your team every day. Tigers unable to complete the sweep against the Yankees at Yankees Stadium. New York salvages the finale. Welcome to a live locked on Tigers postcast. I am your host Jake Rema. You can follow me on Twitter, Jake_Rma. And let’s break this one down. It’s a live locked on Tigers post. Pitching just wasn’t there tonight, and that happens. I understand. Going to try not to get too fired up from it. Hey, Dylan Dingler had a decent night tonight as well offensively. Some positives to take away. We’ll also look ahead to the weekend series against the Miami Marlins. Of course, I’ll have my biggest talking point, our turning point, and our player of the game. That’s all next. So, buckle up and dial it in. As always, your comments are welcome on the live locked on Tigers postcast and we will try to make sense of what transpired at Yankee Stadium tonight. Bummer of an evening as the Tigers are unable to complete the sweep. So, as always, thank you so much for making this your postgame destination. Free and available wherever you get your podcast and of course on YouTube. It’s all part of the Lockdown Podcast Network. your team each and every day. Now, look, uh, these nights are going to happen. 162 games. I tell myself that often, and I, in fact, articulate that often. So, um, probably everybody’s tired of hearing me say, “Oh, yeah, there’s going to be one of, you know, these things happen. There’s 162 games.” But on a night like tonight, you get Aaron Judge hitting a couple of home runs. um you’re up against it a little bit in terms of just the uh pitching depth or lack thereof where you got Sawyer Gibson Long giving up seven earned runs um and and Tyler Holton getting knocked around a little bit with the two earned runs he gave up and then just having to dip deep into the bullpen. So I think this is a night where you don’t uh you don’t let it fester, you don’t dwell on it. You take two or three from the Yankees and again you head to Miami for the latter portion of the road trip. And the Marlins, listen, give them a little bit of credit. They’re not the Miami Marlins of old. So, it’s not like you just show up and uh can walk away with the series win. So, that um of course becomes the focus for the Tigers moving forward. But, we begin where we always begin, our biggest talking point. And if you were to tell a friend about this game and explain to him what happened, what would you say? This is what you’ll be talking about. Listen, I don’t want to use this as the the jumping off point or the, you know, put a pin in it type of explanation on Sawyer Gibson Long as far as what he could potentially be down the road or what he is right now. But a guy just can’t get outs and it’s a bummer. Um because there were certainly high hopes. I know the injuries and everything else, but two and a third, seven hits, seven earned runs. You’re just you’re just not going to win games that way. And I I again I never want it to feel like I’m insulting anybody with a simplistic approach or, you know, overly simplifying it and things of that nature. But at the same time, like let’s let’s look at what happened here. And it just it wasn’t the Tiger’s night. And this comes uh you know on the heels of back-to-back games where the Tigers were dominant and that happens and it happens playing against good teams. Um we’ve talked about that at length how this Tigers team has shown especially in this second half where it hasn’t always been uh you know sunshine and rainbows. There’s been some ups and downs, but this Tigers team has played pretty well against good teams. So tonight um would you have loved to sweep? Absolutely. Of course you would have, but it just was not meant to be um at Yankee Stadium tonight where the Yankees uh what do I always say? Those guys drive Mercedes too. And I know one time somebody got upset with me in the comments for not using an Americanmade vehicle. So what I’m trying to say with that funny saying is those guys are professionals too. Like they’re they’re good baseball players. Aaron Judge, I don’t know if you’ve heard of him or not, but yeah, he’s going to do some damage from time to time. But I will say watching this one after Dylan Dingler and the Tigers scratched across a run in that second inning and it was tied at one, you thought, “All right, maybe maybe.” But right back into the bottom half of the second and the Yankees just go ham and that good feeling was was lost. Um I guess they get two runs in the second, two more in the third, four in the fourth, and it’s it’s a wrap after that. So, um, like I said, I I hate to oversimplify it sometimes, but nights like these are in fact going to happen. And, um, you know, with the president of the United States at the game, we’re not going to get political. That’s the furthest thing from what we’re going to do, uh, on this program for sure. I just listen, I I’ll be quite frank with you. Lockdown doesn’t pay me enough to entertain political ideas and get into all that. I say that tongue and cheek, obviously, but you get the idea. But the president was at the game tonight. Um, and the Yankees came away with the win. Now, let’s get into some of the comments. Anthony Robinson, um, kind of probably how we all feel. Oh well, two out of three ain’t bad. Go Tigers. Um, Christopher Nuel Nuolo says, “I’m sorry, we suck tonight.” Indeed. Um, but you’re you’re going to have nights like these. Demetrius McNeel, all I’m saying is Aaron Judge, but hey, series says Tigers win the series over the Yankees. O well come back next game and I think we all really are on the same page with that. Would you have loved the sweep? Of course. And you know I began the game thinking like this is this has got to be it. Um this is this is going to be a sweep, but it just was not meant to be tonight. Um Mike here getting after Sawyer Gibson long a little bit. Sawyer Gibson long to be the fifth starter for the West Michigan White Caps. And I get it. Listen, um he wasn’t good tonight. he hasn’t been good this year and he’s battled some injuries and he kind of deserved that. So, um I I certainly understand your your take there. Um for sure. Brit Brat 99 is up next. It was pitching try out for the playoffs. Um it was a pitching try out for the playoffs. I see what you’re saying. Yeah, and that’s a good point. Um because you saw some some guys there later in the game, albeit some low leverage instances, but with Hannify going uh an inning and a third and not allowing a run, just giving up the one hit. Um Tommy Canley gets the one out and you know, he does give up one hit but doesn’t allow a run. and and Kater Montero and I’ve been one that’s been a little bit more vocal with Kater Montero where even though at times he has really struggled, there’s been other times where again you just think like the the potential is there, it’s close and for me anyways, there’s enough to believe in that maybe this can be a guy that contributes to the rotation and even if it is in a long relief setting, some type of instance that would be a valuable asset to this Tiger team moving forward and into the postseason. I think Kater Montero is a guy that you you really can have on the postseason roster. And and listen, I’ve been more for Kater Montero than a lot of people, but it is uh in fact how I feel. All right. Um let’s see who else do we have. Anthony Robinson is up next and he says four and two season series win and Merc are decent or Mercedes are decent automobiles and pros like Mercedes. Yes. Yes. I just try to be funny with that sometimes, but yeah, you take the season series over the Yankees and you’ll you’ll certainly take that as well. Um JP says, “Was this a playoff preview or just playing out the string? Playoff games are totally different. Don’t read too much into this series. Just saying.” Yeah, I think you could make that case on both sides. Don’t read too much into tonight and don’t read too much into this series in its entirety. Sure. But at the same time, when postseason baseball rolls around, these are the type of quality of teams that you’re going to be playing night in and night out. And to take two out of three, again, you can say you can you can cherrypick what components of the series you want to take from it and what components of it you don’t. But at the end of the day, the Tigers went out and took the series from the Yankees and took the season series from the Yankees and and that’s something to feel decent about if you’re a member of the Detroit Tigers and supporting that team. So, that being said, let’s keep the lights on. We’ll keep it rolling here after the Tigers fall to the New York Yankees in the finale. 9 to3 the final in this one. It was never really close. Sawyer Gibson Long gives up seven earned runs. And that is in fact your game story. No need to really break it down any further than that. We’ll be right back. We’ll come back with our turning point and of course our player of the game. That’s next on live locked on Tigers Postcast. Without further ado, let’s get into our turning point. Time to reveal where the game was won or lost. It’s the turning point. Listen, I’m not going to do the cheesy cliche of, oh, this game turned when Sawyer Gibson Long took the mound, but um you could feel the energy in the ballpark tonight for the Yankees. They’re trying to avoid a sweep. They’re in a hotly contested race with the Blue Jays as well. Obviously, the wild card picture part of it as well. And with Aaron Judge homering early in this one, in the first and then he hits another in the third, you’re like, “Okay, two home runs from one of the uh you know, obviously one of the premier players in all of baseball.” And it just makes total sense that uh tonight was the Yankees night and there was never really a time where you felt like it wasn’t. So you can kind of pick and choose whatever turning point you want to go to. I’ll just go with the two home runs from Aaron Judge. How about in fact our player of the game. This is the locked on player of the game. Listen, the Yankees deserve a lot of credit. I mean, you look at the starting pitcher in Schlitler, he gets the win, seven strikeouts in six innings. And up and down this lineup, just a number of guys contributing. And the one that jumps off the page is Aaron Judge with his two home runs. But uh a multi RBI night for Jazz Chiselm, two RBI’s for Aaron Judge as well. Um for the Tigers though, I mean Dylan Dingler was the guy that had the best night at the plate with two RBI and he had the one home run as well. But you got to give it to Aaron Judge for how he played. I mean he was just, you know, he’s he’s a superstar. That’s what it is. He is in fact a superstar and there’s no taking that away from him. How about the weekend series ahead? The Tigers will head to Miami, play a little weekend series against the Miami Marlins in South Beach. We got Terrick Scubel on the mound on Friday. Charlie Morton will go on Saturday and it is yet to be determined who the Tigers will go with in the finale. But uh what an opportunity to bounce back anytime you got Teroo on the mound. He’s 13 and4 with the 2.10 10 erra. Sandy Alcantara for the Marlins will go Friday night. That’s a 7:10 Eastern first pitch. So, we’ll be on the air immediately following. Thanks so much for tuning in tonight. Wish I had better news, but hey, you’re not going to go 162 and0 and Aaron Judge and the Yankees avoid the sweep tonight at Yankee Stadium.
