🔴LIVE 🔴Detroit Tigers VS Miami Marlins /September 13/ /MLB THE SHOW 25
Lo Park inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Detroit Tigers taking on the Miami Marlins. First pitch coming at you right after the break. So just about set now and towing the slab in this one. Sandy Alcantara and Singi. We were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. Well, that whip is just below the league average and that’s a good thing in this case, not allowing too many base runners. So, on most days, he’s going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win. And I expect to see that from him in this one today. Parker Meadows, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. This is a hitter who takes his game to another level playing at night. Highf fly ball right field. We has a beat on it. Oh yeah. Makes the catch and there’s one gone. Let’s take a check of the Tigers lineup. Not a whole lot going their way offensively the last few games, Chris. Yeah, Booan. that can put more pressure on the pitching staff to try to limit the opponent to just one or two runs a game knowing that their offense is not scoring right now and that never really works well because you try to be too fine and you end up giving up a lot of runs. So, we’ll see if everybody can just relax, bring things together and perform at a level that they’re capable of. Glabber Torres batic with one down takes the strike. Fair ball, man. Those are the types of hits where you don’t feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever. Such a good feeling. Got the top of the ball a little bit, but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield, so I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bat speed. Late swing, fouled to the left. man at first. One away. Let’s go. One and one in the dirt but kept close. Right-hander kicks. deals swing and a tapper that rolls foul. And there’s a ball. And now it’s filled up. Torres over at first with one away. That one hammered left field. That’s back there and it’s off the wall. Coming home. He’ll score. He’s in there. Always feels good when you come through and get your team on the board first. Just missed out on a home run right there, but he certainly hit it hard enough. just didn’t have the right launch angle to carry it over the wall. But still an excellent swing of the bat. Here’s Riley Green. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Just missed. That one’s in there. That’s strike one. Let’s see if he’s willing to use the whole field right here. Definitely pounding him away. One away with a runner at third. Swing in a liner. Base hit out into right center field and it gets by him. Now around second going for third. The relay and he’s in there. A run comes in on the play. Comes through with the RBI. I love the hustle out of the box. Man, he drove that baseball and he was thinking triple right away. So up next, Spencer Torqulson off the mark there. One and0. [Music] Let’s go [Applause] [Applause] in the dirt. Nice job behind the plate. runner on at third. One gone. [Music] Swings and misses. Two and two now. [Applause] Goes down swinging for the strikeout. Had him out front for strike three. Well, when you swing through that one breaking ball that puts you up against the ropes with two strikes, you think he’s either going to double up or try to blow a fast ball by you at the next pitch. And right there, he snapped off another curve. And it was the same result as the pitch before. Here’s the second base, Colt Keith. That misses the zone. And that’s ball one. He’s given up a couple of runs, but the pitch count really not as high as you would think. Might be able to get through this one under 25 pitches. Two outs. Rip to third. Whips it to first. That ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand. Two runs, three hits, no errors, and one left. On to the bottom of the first. It’s the Tigers two and the Marlins nothing. Back here at Lone Depot Park and on the hill, Trick Scooble. What do we need to know here? Well, it’s all about the strikeout for him. Over 200 punches this season. Expect to see a lot of swings and misses today. And now for the Marlins, Xavier Edwards. He’s going to finish with a new careerhigh in stolen bases. Chris And there’s the strike. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. And he lays down a bunt and a foul ball. Y’all, this is a good time to step out of the box, take a deep breath, reset. Couple of change ups. Probably won’t see another one here. That’s outside and count one and two. Cut on and miss. Struck him out. One gone here, man. That slider bearing in on your hands like that, it’s just so tough to fight off. It’s kind of like a cutter. It just can eat you up, saw you off. I tell you what, hitters have nightmares about that pitch. Perfectly executed out there on the mound. Augustine Ramirez stands in now and watches strike one. Scoo, he has a reputation, I don’t know, maybe a knack for working himself out of tough situations that he finds himself in. You know, you like that in a relief pitcher, but when you have it for a starting pitcher, a guy that can get out of a tight spot, that is pretty valuable. Strike three and that’s two in a row. That’s tough. You see it well. I mean, that was clearly up and out of the strike zone, but that’s one of the hardest things. And when you see a pitch out of the hand at eye level, that discipline to remember I can’t hit that pitch. If I can see it really well at eye level, I can’t catch up to that pitch. When a pitcher’s got this kind of velocity, two out, space is empty. Next offering is in for a strike. And you won’t see the skipper rush to get somebody up in the bullpen as soon as he starts to see some signs of trouble. This guy’s earned a longer leash. And because of that, confidence grows with the players and teammates playing behind him that when things get a little rough out there, they know he’ll find his way through it. That one missed. How much of the ability to do that in a tight spot is the mental approach. I think it’s very much being able to have a laser-like focus, slow everything down, stay right in that moment, pitch to pitch, execution, and focusing on that catcher’s mid. Throws to first. Marlins set down in order. Nothing doing for the Marlins. They trail it here. Two nothing. New inning getting started. Here’s the veteran shortstop. Javier Bayz. Alcantara back to work. saying he wasn’t very sharp in the first. Got hit around a little bit. Just wasn’t able to locate particularly well. A lot of stuff with the fat part of the plate. Yeah, Boo. He wasn’t fooling anyone. It’s a tough place to be cuz it’s not always obvious what adjustments need to be made. Sometimes it’s location. Sometimes it’s being too predictable. Sometimes you’re tipping your pitches. He’s going to need to figure it out quickly, though. If they did a poll of top tattoos in Major League Baseball, Jav Bayz, I think, would have to be in the top five, right on the back of his neck is the Major League Baseball logo. So, it’s effectively right under the MLB logo that’s on his cap. Batting third base, Zack Mckinstry. And now here is Zack McKinstry. Ripped to short in the hole. Jump throw in the dirt. Can’t quite pick it. And that would have been a beautiful play. The effort was there with the jump throw. You got to love it. But it just wasn’t in time. Still a really impressive play just to get to that ball and make it close at first. And not every shortstop could even make that play. Now here is Jake Rogers on the inside corner for a strike. I just love watching Alcantra get ready for games. Boog. He turns into a different person. Just usually cracking jokes and having a good time, but start days are a different story. That’s when things get serious for this guy. Alcantra over to first and he’s back in on a dive. Rogers goes 6’1, 29 years old, and he was a third round pick back in 2016. And now the count is even. Ricky Holiday, our umpire behind the dish, known as pretty fair umpire for both hitters and pitchers. Yeah, I think that’s right, Boo. There is a little inconsistency on the corners of the plate. You can’t always be sure how it’s going to go with those borderline pitches as the game progresses. And that’s through there for a strike. Well, they left that change up. Got away with one there and he’ll take it, but doesn’t want to make that mistake again. Got him looking frozen with the heater at the knees. Digging in. It’s the speedy outfielder Parker Meadows. He’s 0 for one. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offensive side for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Ground ball left side and foul ball. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. Just really impressive because runner to go. The one-1 is fouled off. [Music] Two outs outside with a breaking ball. And that one misses up and in. And that’s ball three. 3-2. Two out. Runner on first. Lot of movement in the infield. The hitters got to stay focused on the pitch. So now two on and two outs. So close to getting out of it right there. But this inning still has life. First and second, two outs. Here comes Glabber Torres. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. McKinstry the lead runner at second. Meadows on at first with two down. Swing and a miss. And that is that. Well, needed a big strike out to get out of danger. Turned to the deception of that change up. Great execution. Really sold it with the arm speed. had his opponent way out on that front foot. Back here in Miami, bottom half of inning number two and the batter will be the shortstop, Otto Lopez. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond, and this guy is at the top of the list. And that one hit 97 on the gun and you played behind guys and they loved having your speed out there defensively. One of the things that we talk about is how much pitchers enjoy having those elite defenders behind them. Hugan, the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hitting wise, you can struggle. you can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. Swing and a miss. Had him out front for the strike out. You know, varying speeds can be just as useful for a pitcher as movement. As you see right there, it really wasn’t a great location, but the fact that the velocity change had the hitter off balance and that’s all you got to do sometimes. And up next for Miami, Ariberto Hernandez just missed. And now two and two. That one down the line. And that’s just foul. this one in the air. Makes the catch for the out. That was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate. Had pretty good timing on it. Just got underneath it a little bit and popped it up. Eric Wagaman the next up for the Marlins. All right. And that’s in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. Miami down in order and they’re down two nothing. All set for the start of the inning. Now it’s the right fielder Carrie Carpenter. As a batter, he’s known for performing better in these night games. He might start two for two in this one. Miami. Way outside. And that is ball one. swings through that filthy change up right there. Just pulled the string. Got him looking. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Riley Green digs in now. It was a triple and an RBI at his first at bat. All around. I think if you asked anyone in this organization who’s the best hitter in the lineup, they would say him. A change up missing. And it’s one and0. Just missed. One out. Base is empty. [Music] Hey, probably the best one we have seen. Throwing it where he wanted to have a nice tight spin to it and a teaser just off the edge of the plate. Next offering is in for a strike. Three to one count. Saying to himself, I’ve got to get a fast ball here. Just spins a get me over breaking ball to bring the count full. Good played appearance there. Able to take the walk. If I were him, I’d be nibbling around the plate as well. I mean, this guy’s just capable of hitting pitches outside of the zone and driving them a long way. Alcantra over to first and he’s back in safely. Torqulson stands in here, leaves that one off the inside. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished a little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you get a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Green the base runner at first with one out. That is strike two. [Applause] That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. [Music] And foul ball. and misses inside and a foul ball. He stays alive. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. On the ground to the left and it goes just foul. swing and a ball ripped right field and that one back and that one is gone. He circles the bases and they boost their lead. It’s 4 nothing. He kept swinging and it paid off. Well, that was a battle, Boo, and he just kept taking his cuts. Finally squared one up. knew what pitch he wanted to hit. Spent on some other pitches in this at bat, was very patient, and it paid off. Base is empty. One away. Colt Keith up now for the Tigers. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. close but called a ball and it’s two and 0. And that’s a pitch early in this game. He needs called for a strike. Struggling with command issues. He’s got to get a little help from the umpire. still only one out here in the inning. And a strike in there. Ripped on a line to center. Marcy calls it in. Two away. Man, that’s one of those at bats where you have to remind yourself it’s about the process. He did everything right right there. nothing to show for it. But in your mind, you have to convince yourself that it was a very good at bat. Bayz batting for the second time and that’s strike one. In for a strike and it’s nothing and two. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. [Music] And that one is inside ball one. Boo. He never moved cuz he never had time to. But that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Can’t connect on the curve ball. Struck him out. Detroit adds two on this homer. It’s now a four nothing ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show and welcome back to the ballpark. Digging in, Joey Wemer. Joey Weame. Swang and a miss. That one at 99. Strike one. Ball one there. One ball, one strike. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Grounds one to short to first. Leadoff hitter gone in the third. Bel, we talk about how the ball is coming out of a pitcher’s hand. The way it comes out of his hand as an infielder. Wow. Really impressive. So, digging in, Moximo A. Costa. Miami. Down and away for ball one. And that’s in there at the knees. I mean, that’s perfect location right on the black. I mean, over and over again, this guy demonstrates the ability to hit those spots that are so tough to do anything with as a hitter. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. And they’re two down. Javier, two down, base is empty. And at the plate for Miami, Javier Senoha. inside. Ball one. Just missed. Ripped on the ground to second. Throw on to Torqulson. That’s the third out. Nine straight retired here to start the game. Tigers four and the Marlins nothing. And we’re back. John Shambi with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Zack McKinstry. Here we go. Miami and that drops in for a strike. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Ryan Weathers preparing to come on if needed. Maser the hardthrowing right-hander up as well. [Music] Hit on the ground to the right side and that’s just foul. Well, he hasn’t quite settled in out there. Four runs in three innings. He’s going to have to have some quick one, two, three innings to pitch deep into this ball game. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. Jake Rogers up now for the Tigers. Struck out looking his first time. And it’s fouled away [Music] on the ground right side and that chance handled. Jumps, throws, and very nicely done for the out. Great fundamentals there at first base. A textbook example of putting your body in position to make a play and doing just that. That’s how they teach you to do it. So, the batting order turns over. Here’s the center fielder. Parker Meadows the bit behind with that swing. It’s strike one. This is important. If he can go one, two, three here will be a very positive sign for him and for his team. Two down, nobody on. Top half of inning number four. Next pitch misses and it’s a ball and a strike. Fast ball gets the corner at the knees. One ball, two strike. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. That misses off the outside edge. really good take especially with two strikes that misses the zone and it’s a full count. That’s foul off to the right side keeps the AB going and a swing and a miss and that’s that. Tigers fail to make any noise but they lead it four to nothing. Back here at Lone Depot Park, bottom four. Now it’s the Marlins leadoff hitter, Xavier Edwards. Take it high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. on the ground right side. Keith the throw to first, one out in the bottom of the fourth. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Here’s the catcher. Augustine Ramirez struck out swinging his first time. That one misses. Ball one. The fish hitless so far in the game. Swing and a miss. Blew it by him at 99. Just threw that fast ball by him. Elevated. And if you’re not looking up in that location, very difficult to catch up to, especially with that velocity. Just missed. Next offering is in for a strike. The Tigers leading by four. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. Spoils a two- strike pitch. And he’ll see another. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. And that one is inside and it’s ball four. And that’s how they get their first base runner of the game. Didn’t miss by much right there. Just couldn’t get the call off the inside corner. And now the center fielder Jacob Marcy 0 for one so far. Step off throw to first. Ramirez dives back in safely and first offering is fouled off. [Music] Come on. Come on Miami. Breaking ball misses down and away. Yeah, the one two misses to even the count. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. and down on strikes. Make it four strikeouts for him on the bump today. Wow, that’s a tough call for the hitter, but the pitcher will take that all day long. Not quite in the strike zone, but he found a spot that the umpire is going to at least for now allow him to get that call. So, hitters are going to have to make an adjustment, but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit them if they can. And now it’s going to be Otto Lopez. Carpenter makes the play and that’s the inning. One left for Miami. They’re down four nothing. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Ryan Weathers. He pitched yesterday and we’ll see him once again. Here is Glabber Torres. Singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two. [Music] And that one fouled off. Torres, 28 years old and he was born in Venezuela. Swinging a miss at a slider. Wow. No fair right there. I mean that slider didn’t move till the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And now the right fielder Carrie Carpenter one for two in the game. He tripled and scored in the first. Swing and a miss. Strike one. 0 and one. That one’s in there and the count is 0 and two. Base is empty. One away. And we’re in the top of the fifth. And one and two. I don’t think he was trying to miss by that much. in an 02 count just tried to overthrow that pitch. Weathers fires and they’ll do it again. Swing and a ball lifted left field. Two away now. Now batting leftielder. Two out. Space is empty. Riley Green up now for the Tigers. And first offering is fouled off. Two down. Nobody on. And now two and one. Good purpose pitch right there. trying to tease him, get him to raise his sights, pop something up and make it an easy out in the air pretty deep out to center field and makes the play and that’s out number three. So they go quietly there. Last half of the fifth coming up Tigers four and the Marlins nothing. Back here in Miami, bottom of the inning now. Here’s the Marlins DH. Ariberto Hernandez. Hernandez. Scoo back to work in the dirt. One and0. You know these Marlins, they’re not going to be happy with the at bats they’ve been having so far. just one base runner to this point and it’s not exactly early anymore. They have guys in this lineup capable of sparking something, but it just hasn’t happened for him yet. There’s the strike of the knees and delivers outside. Expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball, something in the zone because he does not want to allow the leadoff walk and a foul ball. [Music] Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Squwaying at a highf fly ball well struck that’s back there and it hits the fence safe at second with a leadoff double with that fast ball even though it’s high velocity you’ve got to live on the outer edges when it’s right on a tee right down the middle. Professional hitters are not going to have a problem turning it around. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Eric Wagaman getting ready to hit in there for strike one. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. Last half of inning number five. Let’s go Miami. Right through there for a strike. One ball, two strikes. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Man at second. And he couldn’t hold back. He’s rung up on strikes. Joey Weame will hit next. 0 for one. He ground it out in his first at bat. That’s a strike. Swinging a miss. That’s strike two. Man, he really sells the change up with that arm action. Cold strike three on the fast ball and that ran back over the inner half. Up next for the Marlins third base Moximo Costa. And now for the Marlins. Moximo A Costa fly to center his first time. That one outside. And that’s ball one. Swinging a ground ball and foul ball. [Music] fans. Another and that’s three straight strikeouts. That’ll do it for the offense, but not before they manage to break up the no hitter. Tigers four and the Marlins nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now the first baseman, Spencer Torqulson. Ryan Weathers will get back to work. And that one is downstairs. And that is ball one. Swing and a ball driven out to center way back there and that one’s gone. Another homer. Home run number 30 on the year. And they tack one on the board. It’s five zip. That’s a swing that’ll boost the win probability for sure. [Applause] Power versus power right there. Like two locomotives colliding. Who’s going to win? Well, a really good job there by the hitter getting the top hand working. Powers that fast ball out of here. Colt Keith up now for the Tigers. Bowl for two in this one. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Right through there for a strike. I got a ball. One strike. That one finds the zone and it’s one and two. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. Swing and a miss at 96. Struck him out. And that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Bobby Bayz digs in right side. Sing, you talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays on the ground right side and it goes just foul. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. Let’s go. Tosses to first. Bayz going on the play. Now batting third base Zack McKinstry. And up next for Detroit, Zack McKinstry. Come on. In there for a strike at the bottom of the zone. [Music] And ball one. [Music] Next offering is in for a strike. line drive and it stays fair around first and hustling for second. The throw in in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Good two-strike hitting right there, Boog. A bit of a lost start for some. So, that was nicely done to beat the odds. Hooked around that pitch on the outside, but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely. And that takes quick, strong wrist to pull that off. So, runner at second, two down. Jake Rogers up now for the Tigers. late on that fast ball. That one the other way and foul ball. [Music] Some heat there at 98 miles anph. Solo shot for Detroit this inning and the lead is now 5 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Well, we go bottom six. And at the plate for Miami, Javier Senoha. Yeah, there’s the strike. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. up and in. Now one and two. Gets a piece and stays alive. Fights it off. He’ll see another [Music] tapped softly on the ground and that’s just fouled. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Make it four strikeouts in a row. just cruising along back to the top of the Miami order. Xavier Edwards the next to hit. Edwards line to left. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Out number two. Now batting number 50. Two down. Base is empty. Stepping in Augustine Ramirez. Inside corner at the knees, that’s a strike. Good fast ball. Missed with a change up and a count even one and one. So critical to keep an eye on the pitch count this time of the year. Guys can start to run on fumes a little bit. mechanics can drop off and we know they need him to be fresh and ready for big innings in October. Next offering is in for a strike. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth. Cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. And the Marlins down quietly, still looking at that five nothing deficit. Welcome back. We’re in the seventh. We have a new pitcher on the mound. Number 66. He’s pitching on two days rest. And here’s the Tiger leadoff man, Parker Meadows. Parker Meadows. [Music] Outside low, ball one. Well, these Tigers, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. They have five extra base hits on the stat sheet so far, and that tells me they’re seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well. That one finds the zone and it’s two and one. With all those extra base hits, it’s easy to think we’re going to see that trend continue the rest of the game. They seem to be really locked in at the plate. And a two-1 hammered but foul [Music] right side. Edwards fires over to first and the lead off hitter set down to open the seventh. Now batting the designated hitter, Glabber Torres. Here’s Glabber Torres, one for three. Miami. That’s off the inside corner. And that’s ball one. Miamiy’s bullpen with some action. Michael Peterson getting ready to go. Mer getting loose as well. [Music] Two balls, no strikes to count. Swing and a highf fly ball pulled foul and that’s out of play. Miami, come on. Let’s do it. Line drive caught. Not fooled at all right there. He was clearly all over it. But sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone. You’re looking for one of those bloop hits to get a knock. Sometimes two out. Space is empty. Now it’s the right fielder Carrie Carpenter. Breaking ball in there for a strike. That’s in there. No balls, two strikes. One ball, two strikes. That’s down and in. [Music] That one misses in the dirt. Fly ball down the line. Senoha sizing this one up. And that is that. There you go. That’s how you do it. That’s right. [Music] Bottom of the seventh. Here’s the center fielder, Jacob Marcy. Number 87. This to third, whips it across and one away in the bottom of the seventh. Batt. [Music] So, here’s the cleanup hitter, Otto Lopez. Miami. Smoked on the ground. A second. Throw on to Torqulson and a couple of quick outs. Now batting designated hitter. Two down, base is empty. Ariberto Hernandez, the next up for the Marlins, one for two. At 96, that pitch is in for a strike. Two outs. One ball, two strength. Pitch misses inside. And that’s ball two. the other way. Base hit into right field and that keeps the inning alive. Now batting only two hits allowed so far tonight, Boog. So I don’t think that one will disrupt his momentum all that much. You know, he’s really been on top of his game, commanding his pitches all night long. So, a man at first. Eric Wagaman the next up for the Marlins. Swinging a foul out of play. Yeah, the pitch is in for a strike. Oh, and two now. Hernandez leads off first with two down to the inning. Swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strikeout. Marlins leave one. It’s 5 nothing. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Adam Maer. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score. Green stands in now. Looks at that one inside. One and0. Maser measures 6’2 in 23 years old and he was a second round pick in in 2022. Well, that’s really the money spot down and away. If you can locate that consistently, it’s going to be real tough for hitters to square that up. That’s what you love to see relievers do coming out of that bullpen. Out towards right center field, Marcy on his way over, calls it in and there’s one away. Up next for the Tigers, first base. Here comes Torque to the plate. And the way he’s going in this one, we’ve been waiting for his spot to come around again. All right, listen everyone. Stop what you’re doing right now. This guy’s got two home runs already. Now he’s going for number three. in for a strike. Go and one. That one hammered but pulled foul. Looked like he got a little excited on that fast ball. Got to think to yourself, I want to stay up the middle. That way if you’re a little bit early, you hit it out of the ballpark. If you’re a little late, opposite field not that misses. It’s a ball in two strikes. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top of the eighth. And that one missing low. That’s inside. Stays alive. battling here as he fouls it away. Foul. We’ll see another payoff pitch. Also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. fouled off again and it remains three and two. Swing and he breaks his bat. That’s a foul ball. Bell having such a tough time putting him away. Six foul balls in a row. Man, what a battle on the ground to short. Lopez throws across the diamond. So, it was a long battle at the plate, but they still managed to get the out. Colt Colt Keith up now for the Tigers. 0 for three in this one. Let’s go. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. That’s in there. And the count is 0 and two. Got him. And it’s a three up, three down in. Tigers are shut down there as they are unable to add to their five nothing lead. Back now. New pitcher on the mound as we roll into the bottom of the eighth. Chris Paddock. And he’s got a nice lead to work with. So he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. And now the right fielder Joey Weightielder Joey Weey and that misses and it’s one and0 activity in the bullpen for Detroit. Troy Melton getting loose for AJ Hinch. swinging a foul straight back. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in line drive. And this might be trouble around first, heading for two. And he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double. He was all over that one. These days when you see a ball come off the bat like that, I mean the first thing you want to know is a spectator. What was the exit velocity? 109 in this case. I mean that’s just impressive. And it’s so cool we can get that sort of feedback so instantly in today’s game. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Moximo A. Costa the next up for the Marlins. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. If you’re going to get something going, this is the time to do it. You get the leadoff man on. Everybody’s got to look over the shoulder and say, “I’m just going to keep the line moving.” Don’t try to do too much. The one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. Marlins. Right side. Hard hit. tosses to first. One gone in the bottom of the eighth. Now batting left fielder Javier Javier Senoha. The next up for the Marlins. The goal is to give your teammate a chance to score from third. There’s a few ways he can get it done, but his best chance is to drive one in the air. Look for the right pitch up and then smoke it. One’s the count 01 now. And that one pulled foul. [Music] Pitch misses and the count is one and two and it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. One away with a runner at third here in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Fouls it off. Still one and two. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. That’s down. One hops off the wall. Pulls into second. That’s an RBI double. Well, that certainly feels good when you can win the atbat after being down in the count up against it with two strikes right there. Nice line drive to the pole side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. Xavier Edwards gets a chance to hit here. swings and blasts one deep to left center and it looks like trouble. Runner comes in from second to score and they cut the lead. Seeing some good swings from him right now with consecutive extra base hits. Challenged him with the fast ball right in the heart of the zone and he was clearly ready to jump all over it. Now that sets up a huge at bat in this ball game and here comes the Tigers manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Chris Paddock is done. It’s a three-run game. And we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. So, they bring on the veteran Raphael Montero. Well, walks have been a big issue for him this year, so I expect these hitters to be patient up there. Augustine Ramirez now at the plate. A walk and a pair of strikeouts. Swing and a high-fly ball right field. Carpenter hauls it in and there’s two away. Now batting number 87 And now the center fielder, Jacob Marcy. Well, it’s critical right here that they bear down and turn in some quality at bats. Try to chip away at that lead because if it gets to the ninth, that closer’s coming in. Foul ball there. Edwards on third with two out. 02 is the count Going [Music] to count one and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. They limit the damage here. They get two runs on three hits, no errors and one left. Through eight full, it’s the Tigers five and the Marlins two. Back here at Lone Depot Park now. It’s Javier Bayz. Maser back to work. And that one is inside. Activity in the bullpen. Valente Beayoo, the young right-hander up and throwing. Junk getting cranked up as well. And a change up clips the zone for a strike. [Music] And there’s a ball. [Music] That’s to third. And that’s a fair ball. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. So, a man aboard and here is Zack McKinstry. Check swing called strike. [Music] hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. Couple of singles back to back. I really like that swing, man. He didn’t just push it the other way through the infield. He drove it that way. And it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box. Got a pitch he liked and he got it done. First and second, no outs. Jake Rogers up now for the Tigers. Oh one swings through that one for strike two. No outs. Runners at first and second. [Applause] Grounded to third. Could be two. Steps on the bag for one. Now the throw to first on the run and they get the out. Oh man, what a smooth double play. That was a thing of beauty from start to finish. Parker Meadows. Parker Meadows getting ready to hit. Singing. You got to appreciate a guy who’s this good defensively. I mean, watching him track balls in the outfield, it is beautiful. That one misses ball one. And I would say that most great defensive outfielders, it’s kind of natural. There is some work that you can do to it uh to improve your game, but ultimately you either have it or you don’t. There’s one guy that I can think about, Boo, who started as a third baseman, Alex Gordon, and then became an elite perennial gold glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals. But he’s a guy when you watch him play, you would imagine that that’s all he ever played in his life was the outfield. 3- 0 down. And there’s the automatic. Yeah, some guys just have instincts, right? I mean, that’s the way it goes. As we talk about Larry Walker, the Hall of Famer, and his instinct on the bases, despite the fact that he didn’t play a ton of baseball as a kid, remember Mark Katse was a real good defensive outfielder. Good instincts, not great speed and ball for two aboard. Well, a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. First and second, two outs. Glabber Torres up to the plate. Clips the corner. Strike one. That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Hey, you got this. Two on, two outs. Up and in. Now two and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Pulled the string on the change up. Two left on onto the bottom of inning number nine. 456 coming up. It’s the Tigers five and the Marlins two. Back now and on the mound the closer Will Vest coming on to face a righty here. And he’s been fantastic against him this year. His numbers in those matchups are very good. Now here’s the cleanup hitter for Miami, Otto Lopez. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. A short stop. Takes a ball. Fouled off left side. That one fouled off. Two and two. There’s a swing and a drive and that’s a foul ball. That one ripped left field. That’s back onto the track and he makes the catch. Now batting designated hitter. And now here’s the Marlins DH Ariberto Hernandez. Let’s go Marlins. Edge of the zone for a strike. It’s 0 and one. One down, base is empty. That one finds the corner and it’s 0 and two. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. Next offering is downstairs. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. this one in the air and puts the squeeze on that one. And there’s two down. That was a good hard fast ball with some nice ride up in the zone right there. Hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end just beat him instead of a line drive or something hit deep. It’s a pop up and an easy out for the defense. Wagaman in the box now. No balls in a strike. Well, so many hardth throwing relievers in the game these days. You would think that hitters have made the adjustment, but I don’t know if you ever get used to it. Just pumping gas out of the bullpen. So hard to play catchup. Two down, nobody on. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. Got him. And that’s the ball game. Sometimes road trips can be tough. if you’re away from your family, but when you can win, silence that opposing crowd. It makes things just a little bit better. Makes the road trip just a little bit shorter. And your final score, 52.
