🔴LIVE 🔴Cincinnati Reds VS Oakland Athletics /September 13/ Envivo live /MLB THE SHOW 25
It is inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Cincinnati Reds going up against the Athletics. First pitch coming at you right after the break. [Music] Athletics. So almost ready to get underway and on the mound now JT Gin. Well, coming into this game, hitters are batting under 250 against this starting pitcher. So it just shows you how effective he’s been. He’s been able to move his pitches around, add and subtract, change up the look so that hitters don’t get too comfortable, and start squaring up the baseball. We’ll see what he’s got in this one. Here’s the center fielder, TJ Fredel. just off the outside edge and we are underway. Evidently not too impressed with that call and it feels like he got squeezed on the outside corner. So he’s making his case. You got to be careful to pick your spots in terms of showing your frustration with the umpire and he felt this was his time. Swing and a chopper out to short fires across the diamond and the first out of the game is an easy one. Here’s the lineup for the Reds. They’re dealing with a sicker specialist on the mound, which can be a big time challenge when he’s right and working mostly from the knees down. Well, I think the approach you take is really try to lay off of those pitches down in the zone until he gets some called strikes and then forces you to go after that pitch. Until then, make him elevated because guys that throw those sinkers, those two seamers, really hard for them to be effective up in the zone. Those are pitches you can hammer and when you get a left field way back there and that one hops the wall safely into second. He’s got a double. Love how he let that ball travel. Trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. Here’s Ellie. No matter what he does on the field, it feels exciting. Ellie Deas show partner, an electric player. No wonder they put him on the cover. And that is out of play. Get out of here, Red. on the ground to first, but it kicks foul. Lux leads off second with one gone in the inning. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. And this one looks like trouble. In comes the first run of the game as the Reds take the lead. Relay to third. Not in time. He’s safe as a run scores. Well, they strike first as he gets the job done to bring home the run. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy, didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep, took the barrel right to it, and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. One down, runner at third. Austin Hayes the next to hit for the Reds. And that one fouled off. That catches the zone for a strike. And the count is 0 and two. Runner on to third. One gone. Stays alive. hammers that one. Curling down the line and fouled. Clearly hoping he could get a swing and miss on that, but doesn’t fool the hitter with that breaking ball. Nice job. Just couldn’t keep it fair. And that’s in the dirt. Got him looking. That’s a strike out. Just locked him up right there for the second out. And that’s an at bat he’s probably going to be thinking about for a little while. Didn’t pull the trigger. Not how you want to go down in an RBI spot. So now you got to hope your teammate behind you can pick you up. And now Tyler Stevenson. Ball one low. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Out in front and fouled to the left side. Two outs. Swaying at a ball popped up. He dives, but he can’t make the catch. In comes the run from third and it’s an RBI single. It’s two nothing. Comes through with the RBI. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. Just kind of muscled it out there. And you know, on the mound, it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. Two outs, runner at first. Will Benson the next to hit for the Reds. And that’s in there for a strike. Little slider that finds Lamar, baby. Let’s go. Next pitch misses inside. It’s a ball in two strikes. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. Two runs, three hits. No errors and one left. Bottom half of inning number one coming up. It’s the Reds two and the A’s nothing. Back here with my pal Singi and getting the start for Cincinnati. Brady Singer. Chris, how about a scouting report? Well, Boo may be a little pedestrian there in terms of the ERA, but with those numbers, you expect to be in a ball game and have an opportunity to win. And really, that’s all his teammates can ask for. So, we’ll see if he’s able to be consistent in this one. And now the center fielder, Lawrence Butler. Chris, it’s been a good year for him, having already set a new career high for RBI’s season. And that’s in there at the knees. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shut down inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. [Music] Swing it and a miss. No balls, two strikes. That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. Oh, he’s out there to center and it falls. So, a runner aboard to start the inning. Boo, I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Digging in, Sha Langelers. And that one clips the corner. Butler gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Hard hit. Base hit. Throw back in quickly. First and second now with nobody out. Couple of singles back to back. Just an awesome swing of the bat. Quick hands and just launched the baseball. 108 on the exit velocity. Man, that is coming off the bat pretty good. I know he’s feeling good about it. First and second, no outs. Now it’s the rookie first baseman, Nick Curts. And immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. No outs. Runners at first and second. [Applause] line drive. That’s a fair ball inside third. He boots it. One runs in and the stop sign goes up at third on the potential tying run. Big RBI for him right there. That was a thing of beauty. He may have been a little behind the pitch, but by getting that barrel into the hitting zone early on in his swing, he was able to meet it and still shoot a line drive down the line and left. Next is the designated hitter, Brent Rooker. Golden opportunity right here. That one finds the zone and it’s 0 and one. Come on. Spoils the two strike pitch and he’ll see another. Well, he knows they don’t want to give him anything to hit, but when you’ve got opportunities to drive in runs, you’ve got to expand the zone. He’s capable of going out there and doing damage with it. Two runners in scoring position, nobody out. Next pitch, a slider that misses outside. Hey, you got this. And that’s down and away. Jacob Wilson in the deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here [Applause] and a pitch liner and this could be trouble. One runs in heading for the plate. He will score and the A’s have moved out in front. comes through to drive in a pair and give them the lead. He put a great swing on that ball. Took the barrel right to it. Nice extension as well. 105 exit velocity. That tells you everything you need to know about that swing. Jacob Wilson up next for the A’s. That one is hammered right field. That’s back. And that one is gone over the right field wall. He’ll touch them all. his 13th home run of the season and they boost their lead. It’s 5-2. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. [Applause] Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage. Even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. This is JJ Bladeet. That’s outside one and0. Well, it’s not the inning he was planning on to begin this start, but you’ve got to find a way to shake things off and give your team some length and put up some zeros. Swanging a popup. Dela Cruz puts it away for the out. And time now to check out the A’s lineup. Sing, the numbers tell us this is an offense designed to swing it. They’re not going to force a ton of action on the bases and so obviously that is one of the focal points that we’ll look at. And you look at the quality of the at bats because of the fact that the legs aren’t a part of this game. They have to be very selective. Look for long pitch counts, grinding out at bats, and really barrels to the baseball because it’s a lot easier to jog around the bases than for these players to sprint. That one drilled left field and that’s a fair ball around first and hustling for second. And that’s a twobagger. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. One out, runner at second. Carlos Cortez up next for the A’s. a dive. He’s got it. The throw and that’s a great play for the out. Great cat-like reflexes right there. Lays out, knocks the ball down, and then fires with that rocket arm all the way across the diamond. Man, put this guy on the mound. Zack Gellof up next for the A’s. That clips the zone. Strike one. Well, at this pace, he’s not going to be in this game for very long, but he’s got to find a way to shake it off, keep it isolated to one inning, come back out. You could throw up a bunch of zeros and save that bullpen. And a strike. And a bat like this is almost over as it begins. In this situation, you have no idea what the next pitch is going to be. You just got to hope that you can make contact. Next pitch is downstairs. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Got him swinging. He notches strike out number 150 this season. So, five runs in the inning as they bat around. One inning in the books here. It’s the A’s five and the Reds two. And we’re back. All set for the start of the inning. In now for the Reds. Spencer Steer. Again, back to work. Steer getting to start at first. 27 years old and he was a third round pick back in 2019. Swang and a miss and a count even at one. Rusty Valentine umpiring behind the plate in this one. He has what you might call a tall strike zone both at the letters and down below the knees. Yeah. And I’m sure that helps a lot of pitchers we see today who like to work up down trying to change eye levels and swing paths. Yep. Exactly. And foul ball. Come on. Tapped softly on the ground and he takes it himself for the out. Batting a third base Hayes. Now batting Key Brian Hayes. He’s already set a new career best for stolen bases in a season. Chris That misses the zone. Ball one. One out. Base is empty. Slider right there. No, there’s a certain point where you have to commit to what you think you see. And he guessed wrong right there. Nasty slider with just terrific bite at the end. And a big swing and a miss. This guy’s got such a good sinker. As a hitter, you’ve got to look up in the zone. If you look down, you’re going to be chasing stuff in the dirt. On the ground, right side. Tosses to first. Two up, two down in the top of the second. Matt Mlan getting ready to hit. Taking high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform, but at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Pop foul out of play off to the right. Two outs. Base is empty. Swing and a miss. And he got him. And it’s a one, two, three inning. Nobody left for Cincinnati. They trail at 52. And welcome back to the ballpark. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Now here’s the leadoff hitter for the A’s, Lawrence Butler. That one missed. Next offering is in for a strike. Line drive and that should be extra bases. Now he’ll turn for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. And now Terry Franona makes his way out of the dugout towards the mound and he’ll make a change. Brady Singer is done and this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. Andrew Abbott on a pitch out of the pen here. Just trying to keep this one close here. And this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game. Runner in scoring position. No outs. Shay Langalers up next for the A’s. just missed. And that misses ball two. Let’s go, baby. Let’s go. And that one clips the corner. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out. Bottom half of inning number two. That one fouled off. Two and two. Man at second. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Benson snags it. Rounder tags at second and he’s in safely at third with one out. [Applause] Now batting number 16, Nick Curts up next for the A’s. Doubled his first time. You have to find a way to score the runner from third, especially with less than two outs. Wait for the pitch you want and hit it as hard as you can. [Applause] Get out of here. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen. Scott Barlo, the veteran right-hander, appears to be loosening up. Sudter, the lefty, warming up as well. [Applause] The one [Applause] straight swings and misses. Struck him out. Oh, really expanded the zone right there with that fast ball off the outside corner of the plate. Got him to chase it. That’s a tough one to lay off of because it starts close to you and just continues to run away from you in that batter’s box. So, it’s a really nice pitch with two strikes. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. He drove in two with a double his first time up. It’s off his shoulder. Eats him up. The run scores from third. It’s an RBI single and they lead by four. Went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Got the top of the ball a little bit but not much. That was hit pretty hard through the infield. So I think he’ll be happy with that swing. Definitely generated some good bat speed. So two down and the batter will be the shortstop, Jacob Wilson. He’s already homered in this game. Yeah, there’s the strike. Fought off foul. Rooker, the runner at first with two gone. bring home fights that one away and the count remains 0 and2. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Fast ball is outside. Swing and a highf fly ball left field. Hayes has it sized up. and makes the grab. And that is that. So, one run in the inning on this base hit as the A’s are on top. Top half of the third inning. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati. TJ Fredel. And there’s a ball. And that drops in for a strike on the ground to third. Let’s go. Let’s go. And a quick out number one. Well, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. And now it’s Gavin Lux. Doubled his first time up. Check. Swing called. Strike. That’s strike one. And that’s downstairs and outside. One, one strike. That one ripped. And this one looks like trouble around first. Heading for two. And he’s got his second double of the game. He has had such a good day today. I don’t think he’s going to want to leave when it’s over. Couple of doubles today for the DH. Stepping in Ellie Dea Cruz. It was a triple and an RBI at his first at bat. Hard hit left side, slinging it to first in time. Up next for Cincinnati, leftielder Austin Hayes. And now it’s Austin Hayes. He’s over for one. Singi, he’s got a history of coming through in the big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. Baby, let’s go. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on, and then being able to use the entire field outside low and it’s two and one. If you’re a guy that can only hit to one field, then you’re really not going to be able to come through in clutch situations because pitchers are going to adjust. But because he’s able to use the entire field, that’s why he’s so successful in these situations. Two outs and one in scoring position. Liner and this could be trouble coming home. He will score. Throws to second. Not going to get him. He’s in there. He was all over that one. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. And you know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field. And it doesn’t always translate into the game. But right there, it did. And he did it perfectly. Here’s the catcher, Tyler Stevenson. RBI single his last time up. That finds the mark on the inside corner. Hayes on it. Second with two down in the dirt. Tag safe. He’s into third on a wild pitch. Have to be really sure you can make it safely to third when you’re in scoring position and two outs. Got to get that run across. Very important. does a nice job of reading it. Gets to third base now just 90 ft away. [Music] The A’s bullpen has some movement. Mitch Spence getting ready to go. Barnett getting cranked up as well. fights that one away. Still one and two. Swinging a drive deep right field and that is a foul ball. Fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. Swings through that one. It’s a strikeout. But a run will score in the inning on this RBI double. It’s now 63. Major League Baseball is on the show. Bottom of the inning. Now it’s the right fielder JJ Blade. JJ Blade. First pitch misses. You know, these A’s really producing with runners on. It’s been a right place, right time kind of game for them. They put a bunch of runs on the board thanks in large part to four hits with runners in scoring position. The one-1 swings through that one for strike two. On top of that, they haven’t left many runners on base. So, they’ve been efficient getting runners on and finding ways to bring him home. That misses and the count is even. Two and two. Le tries to check his swing now. Oh, look to third and that’s a strikeout. Mike Filillmore says he won around. Now the third baseman, Daryl Hern doubled in his first AB. Daryl Hern fouled off. up the middle. Mlan throws to first and two straight set down to begin the bottom of the third. Carlos Cortez. Next up for the A’s, Carlos Cortez grounded out to short in his first trip and a swing and a miss. ball one strike. Next offering upstairs and a ground ball to first and that’s just foul. Popped in the air left field. Hayes, come on. Pulls it down and he makes the catch. And that’ll do it. Nothing across here this half. On to inning number four. It’s the A6 and the Reds three. And we’re back. John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Will Benson. right through there for a strike. Well, these Reds showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. It’s not just the three runs they’ve already scored. On top of that, they forced this starter to throw more pitches than he wanted to at this point of the game. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back. And it’s off the wall around second now as they still don’t have it. And he’s into third base with a leadoff triple. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Absolutely blasted that one into the gap, but just didn’t have quite enough to clear the wall out there. Maybe a little more elevation under it. And it carries over, but that’s a swing you’ll be happy with every time. And here comes Mark Katse as he’s ready to make a change and go to the bullpen. JT Gin will depart. And not his finest start. Never really looked comfortable out there. We’ll have a new pitcher on the mound when we get back. Now on the bump, Mitch Spence still pretty early in the ball game. So this bullpen has some work ahead of him. Best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him. Runner at third, nobody out. Spencer Steer the next to hit for the Reds. 0 for one. grounded out to first his last time. Splits the plate. Strike one. Just missed. Benson, the lone runner, stands at third with nobody out. [Music] That’s away. Let’s go, baby. Let’s go. Next offering is in for a strike. Just a really nice slider down and in there. He wants to get the hitter thinking fast ball. Speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement. That one back up the middle and it gets through. runner from third comes across and it’s an RBI single and it’s 6-4. We don’t see this a whole lot anymore where hitters with two strikes are willing to shorten up, tighten up and try to hit the ball back up the middle other way. He was trying to hit that hole, I believe. Very good at bat with two strikes. Key Brian Hayes the next to hit for the Reds outside. Now these guys definitely looking for a big swing of the bat right here. try to close that gap. But, you know, at the very least, if you could find a way to manufacture that run from first, it feels like it’s really important to getting back into this ball game. [Applause] Tapped at the plate, but it’s a foul ball. Cut on and lifted in the air. Leay in position. And there’s one away. Up next for Cincinnati, second base Matt Mlan. Next for Cincinnati, Matt Mlan struck out on just three pitches last time. And the first pitch misses for ball one. If you’re the pitcher, you’ve got to go right at this guy. It’s the number nine hitter in the lineup. You can’t be afraid of contact in this situation. Two and0 to Cal. Here it comes. Hard ground ball for a base knock. They fired in quickly. So, it’s first and second with only one away. Showed some really nice patience in that at bat. Worked himself into a good count. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Manager out of the dugout now and he will make a move to dip into the A’s bullpen. Mitch Spence gives way and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this Brady Basso comes on now. Still a lot of game left and this game could go either way. So, this is a big opportunity for him to get some important outs and try to help carry this lead into the later innings. First and second, one out. Now, here’s the Red’s leadoff man, TJ Fredel. He’s grounded out a couple of times. That one finds the zone. It’s 0 and one. Well, all eyes on the double play ball in this spot. No better way to get out of this inning with the go-ahead run at the plate. Top half of inning number four. Next offering is downstairs. Way to lay off that pitch down. in for a strike at a count one and two in the dirt but kept close and an excellent job keeping it right there. Runners at first and second with one gone. And that’s off the outside edge. And that’s ball three. Gavin Lux in the on deck circle hoping to get a chance to make a big impact here. [Music] Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Well, that’s a blue zone right there or the cold zone on the hitting chart. Just doesn’t have much success in that part of the strike zone. And a really good job of the pitcher executing. Try to go there as often as you can. The numbers are in your favor. Now it’s the Red’s DH. Gavin Lux and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Two on, two outs. Swinging a foul out of play. And that one is downstairs. Ball one. Well, he missed badly with that O2 fast ball. Hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch. So, got to stay ready for it. Two on, two outs. Blows the high heat past him. That’s a strike out. But they pick up one run on the RBI single. It’s a two-run lead now at 64. Welcome back. And they turn to a new arm as we kick off the bottom of the fourth. Scott Barlo and he’s had his struggles so far this year. As you can see the inflated erra looking to bring that down a little bit right here. Gellof in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball and that’s down and away. Back to back breaking pitches away. You get the feeling as a hitter that the pitcher is afraid of you, that he doesn’t want to challenge you. So, I think the confidence level is raised right here. Next one misses and it’s 3 and 0. Well, I would expect in this three-0 count. You’re taking all the way. See if he’ll walk you. That one finds the zone and now three and one. That’s a good pitch there. Really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Up next for the A’s centeriel. So the batting order turns over. Here’s the center fielder Lawrence Butler. That’s a ball tried to attack with a sweeper. Come on. Two balls. No strike in the dirt. Blocked. Gellof gets his lead at first with nobody out. Let’s go. Bring him home. Next offering in there for a strike and the count is three and one. Swing and he breaks his back. Makes the catch for the out and there’s one down. Up next for the A’s catcher. Next to hit Shay Langalers. This is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively. Fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate. Good game caller. Good at framing, but it’s that big arm that really stands out. Check swing and he went 0 and one. When you got a catcher like this guy with a big arm like that behind the plate, it really shuts down the running game. Hit hard. Should be extra bases. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score. Well done. Drives in the run. Loud contact leads to the double. I mean, you could tell it had extra bases written all over it as it jumped off of his stick. Next up for the A’s, Nick Curts. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. Just missed. next offering is in for a strike. Let’s see if he’s willing to use the whole field right here. Definitely pounding him away. [Applause] just missed. Not really attacking on the mound in this at bat. All breaking balls. So that makes me think they’re not really wanting to challenge him here. And downstairs, good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle- of the order hitter up, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. And ball four, two aboard. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there. Anyhow, up next for the A’s hitter. Two on, one out. Brent Rooker up next for the A’s. RBI knock for him last time. Now a chance to drive in another run. There’s a strike. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. Pitch misses inside. One and one. Swinging a miss at a slider. Clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there and just ended up out in front of the slider. Hey, you can’t fault him for his commitment. Now he’s just going to have to battle with two strikes. And a swing and a miss. Two gone now. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strikeout. So, two down now and here is Jacob Wilson. He’s already homered here in this one. That’s a strike. [Applause] One more time. This one in the air. Barlo drops into the glove and that ends the inning. A’s get one on the RBI double. It’s now a 74 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. We’re back and there’s a new arm on the mound to start the fifth. Mason Barnett. He’s making his fourth appearance of the season. In now for the Reds. Ellie Dea Cruz one for two in the game. He tripled and scored in the first. Had a strike on the outside corner at 95 Barnett. In his rookie season, he features a four seam fast, a slider, a curve, a change up, and he works in a sinker into the outfield. Base hit. Had a good start to the inning. He kind of rolled over on this pitch a little bit, but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock. And you’ll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. And here is Austin Hayes and he takes a strike. This is a great dynamic right here. Speedy runner at first, thinking about taking second. Catcher with the pop time that leaves Jaws on the floor. This might get interesting. Boot. Yeah, that’s fouled off. Well, they gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone. I’m sure he’s kicking himself and would like that pitch again. Back up the Oh, that got him. You got to be kidding me. Gets it there in time, though. And now they have a base runner at second. That one got him pretty good. But perhaps the silver lining is that it got him in his non-throwing arm. Chris. Yeah, assuming there’s nothing broken in there, I think he should be able to shake this one off. But man, that can’t feel good. He’s going to have a pretty nice bruise at the very least. That’s for sure. Here’s the Reds catcher, Tyler Stevenson. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. First pitch doesn’t find the zone and a foul ball. Come on, Athletics. swings through that one out in front that time. [Applause] on the wild pitch. Well, that right there can be a tough read as a runner on second to see if the ball’s gotten away enough to move to third. You have to be sure you can make it because you’re already in scoring position. Well, he was sure there and now he’s only 90 ft away from scoring. battling here as he fouls it away. Punch him out. And that’s a strike out looking. Called strike three. And a fast ball up in the zone. Frustrating end to the at bat for the hitter. And I’m sure that’s going to sit on him for a little while. You want to be ready to hit the fast ball. Sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there. Benson up to the plate for the third time as he looks at one down low. Sliced hard but fouled down the left side. Dela Cruz on third with two out. Fouled off. He was late on the ground to third. Can’t glove it cleanly. Still fires to first. That’s the third out. Really fantastic play over at first. That catch saved a run. If the throw gets away, the runner from third is cruising home to score easily. Moments like those matter quite a bit in this game. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Brent Sudter. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season, so this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. Leay in the box now. No balls in a strike. You know, these athletics, simply put, are producing a lot of quality swings. Everything seems to be clicking and the six extra base hits in the game kind of tells you everything you need to know. They’re not getting fooled up there at all. Battlary. And the batter now, Daryl Hern. Let’s go. Three to go, baby. Let’s go. And there’s a rocket into the outfield. Makes the turn and heads for second. Not stopping. He’s going for three. Throw pulls him off the bag and he’s saved. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Man, that feels so good to shoot an absolute bolt the opposite way. split the gap and know that you’ve got extra bases right off the bat. That’s the kind of thing hitters dream about when they’re falling asleep at night. [Applause] Carlos Cortez up next for the A’s. Both for two in this one. In there at the knees. Strike one. Come on. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Fights it off. You’ll see another The A’s looking to add another. And that skips in the dirt. That’s to third. Slings it across. Now two out. Now batting second base Zack Gellof. Next up for the A’s, Zack Gellof. Oh, bottom of the order here, Boog. You got to go right after this guy as they look to pick up an add-on run. And the number nine guy at the plate outside with a breaking ball. He swings and fouls one off. Let’s go. Swang and a miss. There’s the change up. Missed with a change up. The countdown two and two. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. Still two and two after the foul ball. Cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. Snuck the fast ball by him. The A’s strand one. They hold a 74 lead. back now. And on the mound, the closer Sha Nukem and I can’t imagine any save is an easy one. You’re holding a small lead on the scoreboard. And you know those hitters are going to give you the best at bats they can. So it’s always high stress. Let’s see what he’s got here to try and close it out. And ready to hit now for Cincinnati. Spencer Steer. Ah, that hit him. And the lead off man is aboard to start the inning. Now it’s going to be Kean Hayes. And when you talk about elite defensive third baseman, this guy is at the top of the list right through there for a strike. This guy plays third base like he’s a shortstop and he welcomes the difficult play. Can throw from so many different angles and makes really tough play. Slings to second. plenty of time at first. That’s a double play. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. The first baseman has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play, and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. So, it’s their last chance in this one. Next to hit, Matt Mlan. That one’s in there. 0 and one. that one pushed foul. One strike away. This one smoked out to left. That’s the ball game. Whether you’re a season ticket holder or you just come to a couple of games a year to see your team win at home, there’s just something special about that. Good job by this team to get it done for the hometown fans. This one finishes with a final of seven to four. The A’s are victorious for Chris Singleton and our entire crew. I’m John Shabi saying so long.
