MLB Network | Ron Darling GOES CRAZY Philadelphia Phillies sweep New York Mets in 4-game series
there just a, you know, a really experienced level of poise. Uh, you just, you know, stay calm. Obviously, it’s very high intensity, a lot of passion in the stands. Uh, we understand the fans expectations day in and day out. And we just try to match them and I think the best way to match those is just to, you know, trust your preparation, stay confident in your preparation and go out there and just let the game take care of itself. So, I think it’s just a locker room full of those guys. We lean on each other to to pick each other up. Um, and yeah, it’s just it’s just a great clubhouse to be a part of. Well, I’m not going to say that I’m worried, but it’s, you know, like we don’t we don’t have too much time. Teams are right behind us. Uh, and it’s becoming now what, 15 games. The way you look at it is we’re still in control of the situation. You know, we’re still in control of achieving the ultimate goal. Uh, but we got to go out and do it. So, the Phils have this division unlocked. Will the Mets keep their spot in October? Uh they have a game and a half on the Reds and the Giants. But the Mets have the tiebreaker over the Giants. And Cincy has it over the Mets. And yesterday, Ron was different. The Mets jumped out to a lead. It almost made that loss more painful. Well, it made it more painful cuz, you know, Peterson was really good until the camp home run. It looked like, you know, he had the game under control and it kind of switched when he gave up that home run. But, you know, the Mets have had one of the strangest seasons I’ve ever seen. Maybe because of the great pitching in the beginning. There was some unrealistic optimism of where they’re going to go. What were they 41 45 and 24 21 games over, but on June 12th, if you guys remember, you do go so many things here. Um, Kodi Sena covered first, hurt his hamstring. All right. He went out the next day, June 13th, Mets are 45 and 24. Uh, Klay Holmes is pitching. He’s winning 5-1 against Tampa Bay Rays. They end up losing that game, getting swept by the Rays, and since then they’re 31 and 47. And it’s a lot of different reasons. I think the one thing they missed is that when they started really hitting the ball where they were scoring over seven runs a game, about seven runs a game. They went 12 and 18, something like that. In that time, most teams would go 20 and 10. If you got good pitching, you’d go 25 and five. So, they kind of missed their window there. Then they had a time where the starting pitchers weren’t getting any innings. It compromises the bullpen, all of those things that happen to teams, uh, that are struggling. But, uh, I’d have to say, listening to Mendoza there, Mendoza has been really good. He’s so authentic. He’s great to be around. He’s had the same face the whole time. And these innings, fewest innings by pitchers. You know, the rest of the people on that list, other than the Dodgers, are teams that have struggled this year. And it just compromises your bullpen. When you look at the who they have now, uh the Mets welcome the Texas Rangers who are among the hottest teams in baseball. And oh by the way, Jacob Deg Grom gets the start, his return to Queens. We’ll talk more about that in a little bit. But Jesus Lazardo, he did something that no Philly pitcher had done since the 50s. That is give up four runs in the first, go at least eight, and get the win. Now, Steve Carlton did it in the 70s, but he didn’t get the win. The last Philly to do this, Robin Roberts in 1955. The great Robin Roberts, the whole Robin Roberts. You know what’s funny? In the days in the 50s, if you got off to a bad start and your bullpen was compromised, you just you just got to wear it. He gave up nine runs and still got the win as they came back. I think we have to understand what happened to Lozardo in June. in June in five and two and back-to-back starts in five innings he gave up 20 runs. Y so to have that insides to work hard enough and with Caleb Cawtham their pitching coach guidance I think that’s why you come to this place and it manifests itself in a way that he gives up four but he’s now tougher and more mature to handle maybe getting deeper in that game and then he just throws you know 22 outs in a row as Lauren was saying just a gem. It’s um it’s it’s great to see things that happen during the season that almost knock you down end up being one of your biggest super strengths at the end. And the interesting thing now, Lauren, is when the Phillies go to the postseason, what are they going to do? Are you going to go with three lefties? I I don’t know. All I Or do you put one of them in the bullpen and have Aaron Nola get a start? They’re the most complete team right now. And I feel like we’ll do they’ll do what other teams have done. you’ll see Walker Beller closing out, right? Like they’ll they’ll they’ll make it work like that. But I know we’re covering the Phillies uh for TBS for the postseason. We’re going to need two IFBs. That place is right. It’s Phillies continue their home stand. And Peterson’s pitch swung on, hitting the air, center field, and deep. Going back, McNeel looking up at the angled wall. And that ball is gone. Otto Kemp with a two-run home run to get the Phillies on the board. A towering home run over the angled wall to the left of dead center. It’s his sixth of the year and they’ll cut the lead in half. It’s 4-2. The wind up. Here’s the pitch. Swung on. Hit sharply to first. Alonzo had it. Dropped it. It rolls into foul territory and Harper will reach. Tough hop for Alonzo. Diving towards the line. Just kind of handcuffed him. And it’ll be another run home for the Phillies. 6-4. The whole game really uh was probably as impressive a win as we’ve had all year. You know, Lazardo gives up the four in the first, up on his own a little bit, behind the count a little bit, and then he just settled right in and gave us eight strong. It’s really unbelievable. And the, you know, the offense kept coming. They just didn’t quit. Well, you heard Scott Francy there, radio voice of the Phillies on the call. And then Rob Thompson of course talking about Jesus Lazardo and the masterful performance that he threw out there yesterday after giving up a four spot in the first inning. You know with the Mets seemingly reeling needing to win this baseball game. You know getting off to a 4 nothing lead early in this game in the first inning. Uh Jesus Lazardo went on to retire 22 straight batters after that first inning, making it through eight complete innings. a masterful performance. But more importantly, what he did was, okay, you give up a four spot, no big deal. I have one of the best offenses in baseball as well. If I can hold these guys right there and let my offense go to work, uh I’m going to have a chance to sneak out of this ball game with not only just a win uh with a hopefully a no decision at that point or at least give myself a chance to to set this up for the bullpen and come in and take advantage of it from there. Uh you heard Scotty talk about homer that Otto Lopez hit. was an absolute bomb, by the way, to dead center. I’ve seen like three people go there, and they’re all left-handed. He’s the first right-handed hitter I’ve seen actually go up there. Uh, so that’s pretty awesome. But this offense did exactly what it did, uh, or what it does, I guess you could say. And Jesus Lazardo had given up 12 earned runs in the month of August. Gave up a four spot here in just his second start in September. Limited the damage from then on out. Was a masterful performance. And then again, Yan Duran, the best closer in baseball, comes in, shuts things down as the Mets get swept in Philadelphia after sweeping the Phillies at home last week. This was a dagger for the Mets as well as they are reeling in a bad way right now and have to find a way to snap out of this little funk that they’re in because they’re 10 games below 500 uh since mid August and that’s not a good sign going forward. It certainly isn’t right. 14 to 24 since August 1st for the Mets. They’re the first team in the modern era uh to get four runs in the first inning and then not have a runner reach base the rest of the game. I mean, they just got shut down. And from the Phillies perspective for Lazardo, uh he he went gave up four in the first. He’s this the the first pitcher to do that since 1955. Uh when was it Robin Roberts did it uh and uh uh and he gave up nine runs did Roberts back then. uh Lazardo just was complete shutdown the rest of the way to end up getting a win uh in that moment. So, pretty impressive uh overall. All right.
