Kansas City Royals vs Philadelphia Phillies – MLB 9/14/25 Full Game Highlights (MLB The Show 25 Sim)

and welcome into the ballpark. Happy to have you with us. Inner league baseball on MLB the show. It’s the Kansas City Royals taking on the Philadelphia Phillies. First pitch coming your way next. Welcome your Philadelphia Phillies. [Applause] Just a little bit away from first pitch and today’s starter, Walker Buer. But Chris, he hasn’t exactly been stellar here on his home mound. Well, I’ll say this. Every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans, in front of the city. And you know, this guy no different. He wants to be more effective here. So, you know, you look at the numbers, they haven’t been great at home. I’m sure he wants to turn that around. And we’ll see if he’s able to start that in this one. Mike Yremsky, the leadoff batter, as he looks at ball one. This one high in the air to left center. Fader under it. Makes the grab and a quick out number one. And here now the lineup for the Royals getting guys across the plate. Not exactly a forte for them this year as their offense is in the bottom third of the league in runs scored. Boo. It becomes extremely frustrating and then what happens is guys press, especially in run scoring opportunities and situations. On top of that, I mean, you really make it harder on your pitcher. He feels like he’s got to be perfect to go out there and win a ball game or at least to put the team in a position to win a ball game. So, they’ve got to figure out a way to relax, get those runners across when they have them on and especially when they’re in scoring position. Ball one there. Whit Jr. is one of only two players in AL NL history to have 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in each of his first two seasons. Boo. The other player, Julio Rodriguez. That one hit to right. This looks like extra bases. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he starts his afternoon off right with a double. Batty third. The designated hitter, Vidy Castentino. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. And next is the designated hitter, Vinnie Pasquantino. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Inside moved to second and he’s back in easily outside low and that’s ball one ripped right field. That’s back there. That one way back and it’s gone. His 31st home run of the season. And they throw a pair on the board. It’s two nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. [Music] Now the third baseman, Mikel Garcia. [Applause] That one’s upstairs. Ball one. 10 [Applause] up and in. Now 2 and 0. Buer maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, guys, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. And there’s two down. It’s a good recovery though after giving up the home run, not allowing it to stay in the head, but going to work at the next hitter. And a tough one at that. And now it’s Salvador Perez to the plate. Check swing on the first pitch. Appeal down to first. Yes, he did. That’s a swing. And now it’s even up. Two outs. Base is empty. [Applause] Not even close there. Now two balls in a strike. Next offering pop foul off to the right. Out of play. Two down. Do on still two and two after the foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Spoils that one and it remains two and two. [Music] Beller turns, kicks, fires. Swing and a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. right there does a great job of staying in the big part of the field. Man, there are a lot of hits there. Here’s Adam Frasier. Clips the corner. Strike one. Perez off of first with two away. delivers a pitch in for a strike at 95. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. Going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. Fast ball right back to the mound. Throws the first in time. That’s a third out. Two-run shot for the Royals this inning. And it’s two zip. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. back at Citizens Bank Park getting the nod in this one. Daniel Lynch. Well, he’s been a very dependable starter for his club. And what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him. I mean, it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball. Maybe it’s the release point. Maybe it’s the motion, but just some way, somehow they’ve got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side. We go to the bottom of the first and here’s the veteran outfielder Harrison Bader. A little bit high and it’s one and0. swing and a miss as he was out front that time. So now one and two. Threw that fast ball right by him. Slightly elevated. That’s a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound. See if he continues to climb the ladder. Not sure about that call. pitcher might have gotten a friendly strike three. Well, it’s just a great job of playing catch with the catcher. Exactly where the catcher set up is where he threw that pitch and probably fooled the umpire a little bit because there was no budge at all. And Kyle Schwarber will come up. Another solid power season. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. [Music] Started to swing. held though. Swing and a miss. And that’s strike two. Two two the count. Next pitch is downstairs. One out. Base is empty. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, there appears to be no problem settling in on the mound out there today. It looks pretty tough to start this one, punching out the first two hitters of this ball game. And somebody’s going to have to put the bat on the ball, put it in play, and get something going. Bryce Harper stands in now and watches strike one. Closed, but called a ball. Ball one. First two hitters get punched out on strikes. Take some notes from the dugout. When you get your chance, go out there and hit the ball hard somewhere. Two outs. That misses. Now two and two. He really committed to that fast ball up at the top of the zone. He knows that if he makes a mistake in the zone, it gets hit hard by a power guy like this. That’s a nice miss right there. Pitch misses there and it’s a full count [Applause] [Music] and a foul ball. stays alive. Great swing and solid contact. Just a little too quick. He’s got to stay back a little longer. The sliding play at short the throw and they get the out. Three up, three down for Philadelphia. They trail things here. Two nothing. [Music] And welcome back to the ballpark. Second inning set to go. Now here is Michael Massie. Walker Beller will go back to work. Ground ball to the right side. Handles, throws to first. One up, one down. Batting eight. First baseman number 14. Now it’s the rookie first baseman, Jack Kaggle Leone. He’s got pop, which is a little sneaky because he’s so comfortable with taking his base hits to the opposite field, but he can jump you if you make a mistake. The 10. And another ball. Dave Lawrence assigned to work home plate in this one. Good umpire, Boog. very fair, very consistent. Now, I did hear some feedback that he opens up the outside corner a little bit on left-handed hitters, which, you know, for me, I’d be kind of salty, so maybe something to keep an eye on and see if that factors into this one at all. [Music] Let’s see if he gives him anything to hit here. That one is inside ball four. And I mean, oh, so close. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bat. And now it’s Kyle Isbel. Good defender. He’s been inconsistent offensively. That one misses. That’s five straight. Isbel in his fourth year, 28 years old, and he was a third round pick back in 2018. that catches the top part of the zone. And now it’s even one and one. Fast is outside. Kaggle Leone leads off first with one away. Fast ball for a strike. sets him down looking. Went back to the fast and it was effective. Well, he throws him with a great fast ball right on the corner. It’s kind like bowling when you think the ball’s going to get into the gutter and somehow just hangs onto that edge and knocks down a pin. Well, he got the outside corner of the plate and got that called third strike. Buer looked to first and he’s back safely. Let’s go. Yensky batting for the second time. And that’s strike one. [Music] Just lift. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a roll over something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. Kepler ranging back. Makes the catch. Crashing into the wall. Oh man, amazing catch to end the inning. As a former outfielder, I’m feeling proud right now. Saw the wall, didn’t get afraid, held on to the ball. [Applause] Back here in Philadelphia. Now the left fielder, Brandon Marsh. Left fielder, Brandon Marsh. Lynch back to work. Ball one, no strikes. [Applause] Bomb. [Applause] Late swing foul to the left. Fouls one off. Two and two. Got him. And he’s registered three Ks in this one. Well, he really filled up the strike zone in that at bat until that final pitch. And as a hitter, you sense that they’re coming after you, not dancing around the strike zone. They want to attack and so you kind of get into swing mode and you have to protect the plate. That’s when you become really susceptible to something that makes you chase. And that’s exactly what happened right there. Here’s the rookie third baseman. Here’s a swing and a line drive and a base hit to right field. So, a man aboard now with one away. Batting six, right fielder Max Kepler. Max Kepler at the plate. [Applause] And that is out of play. Step off throw to first and he dives back in safely. Man at first. One away. [Applause] Hit on the ground. Might be two. Wick for one. What a double play that was. Inning over. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. We played two full. It’s the Royals two and the Phillies nothing. New inning getting started. So up now for Kansas City, Bobby Jun. We talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it. But pushing the offense aside for just a second, Chris, it’s the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most. Buer winds and fires and a foul ball. Well, he gets to balls that get by most people at that position. just really impressive because there’s certain times a ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they’ve got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away. Squig through that one. It’s a strike out now batting. Now Vinnie Pasentino, he’s already homered here in this one. on the ground to first. Oh, look at the stop and very nicely done for the out, man. A lot going on on that play. Diving stop to his right in that hole and then gets up and takes it himself. Man, it’s a one-man show. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Mike El Garcia. hit on the ground to short. Stop tosses to first and it’s a one, two, three inning. Royals bats are quiet there. They’re up two nothing. And we’re back. And now the DH Mundo Sosa designated hitter Edmund Mundo Sosa. Swinging a drive deep right field. That’s back. Pulls it in on the warning track. He was all over that first pitch fast but just barely missed it. Man, this guy was ready to hit. This is Bryson stop singing. When the year’s over, he’ll have a new careerhigh for RBI’s in a season. in the air left field down the line squeezes it and there’s two away. Betting ninth catcher Raphael Mar. So digging in Raphael Maron known for his rocket arm behind the plate and first offering is fouled off. That’s a ball. One ball, one strike. Right through there for a strike. Swinging a ground ball. Oh, what a stop to his knee. The throw. Nicely done for the out. Making it look easy at the Keystone position. Definitely worth another look. He’ll get some high fives when he gets into the dugout. As we go to the top of the fourth and now the catcher comes up to him, Salvador Perez. Love coming to Citizens Bank Park. best ice cream in all of the league at the press level. It’s only been around since 2004, but plenty of awesome history here already. It’s the only stadium with multiple postseason no hitters. Remember Roy Hall did it back in 2010 and the Houston Astros threw a combined no in game four of the 2022 World Series. Just missed. That’s good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Ripped to short and they get Perez for the out. Now batting left fielder Adam Frasier. Adam Frasier steps in for the Royals. Grounded out his first time. Just missed. Ball one. No strikes. The next offering misses and the count now two and nothing. Base is empty. One away. Top half of inning number four. And that one is lifted in the air. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Now batting second base, Michael Massie. Michael Massie steps in for the Royals. Grounded out. His first time up. Close one. Doesn’t get the call. And that’s ball one. He swings and fouls one off. Buer fires on the ground right side and foul ball. [Music] [Applause] Foul ball still a one and two count. Two down. Nobody on. Fouls it off. Still one and two. [Music] That one missing inside. just outside and it’s three and two. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity. That one lifted to left Marsh. And that is that offense held in check there. We’re midway in the fourth. It’s the Royals two and the Phillies nothing. Back here, Citizens Bank Park. John Chabi and Chris Singleton with you. And leading off the bottom of the fourth, Harrison Bader. Harrison. And that one upstairs. Ball one. Bader. Guy who played his college ball at the University of Florida from the New York area. went to Horus Man High School. [Applause] Two [Applause] fought off foul. There’s a swing and a drive and it bangs off the out of town scoreboard and that’s a leadoff double. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Kyle Schwarber comes up to hit here. He struck out swinging at his first atbat. And a foul ball. Well, here’s a good opportunity in this inning to get on the scoreboard after that leadoff hit. And hardly order coming up right behind him. This is where they need to get going. Come on. That’s down in a slider missed. [Applause] Cuts and misses. It’s a strike out. Well, that’s the money maker right there. Two strikes. Slider down and away from a same side thrower as the hitter. I mean, that’s just tough. You’re looking to protect with two strikes and very difficult to lay off. Bryce Harper to the plate. Grounded out his first time. Hard hit left side. Tosses to first. Harper retired. Oh, he’s doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air. Lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball. Good execution. Brandon Marsh steps to the plate, went down on strikes his first time through. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. For him right now at the plate, it’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. [Applause] Well, we call that keyhole. Even though it’s right there and looks pretty good, if he doesn’t love it, he’s not going to swing that early in the count. [Music] Man at second. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. The pitch that misses the zone and it’s two and two. [Music] bows it back with two strikes. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. [Applause] got him swinging a double in the inning, but they leave him stranded. We played four. It’s the Royals two and the Phillies nothing. Back at Citizens Bank ready now for the fifth inning. And now here is Jack Kaggle Leone. Buer back to work. Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So a runner aboard to start the inning. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. And now Kyle Isel runner on the go on the ground right side finds his way through base hit and they’re at the corners with nobody out. No, he’s safe. Now batting right fielder Mike Yestreki. Back to the top of the lineup. Mike Estreky the second MLB Yaz steps in swing and a ball popped up under it and there’s one down. Throw behind the doubled off. Well, you got to give him credit out there in the mound. This outing started off a little shaky but he’s found a way to settle in and turned this into a pretty good start. kind of shows you a lot about his mental makeup as a pitcher. Now here’s Bobby Wit Jr. One for two. Swing and that ball smashed on a line and that’s the third out. So one left for Kansas City but they hold a two nothing lead. Back here in Philadelphia, we head to the bottom of the fifth, leading off number four. Number four, swinging a liner foul off to the right. You know, these Phils just aren’t putting great swings on the baseball in this one. just one extra base hit for him. So, they haven’t exactly been hitting the ball gap to gap or out of the park. That makes it really difficult to generate runs. [Music] Hack misses. It’s a strikeout. Stood absolutely no chance on that slider right there. They don’t mean to laugh, but that’s a tough one. I mean, pretty much a perfect strikeout pitch. I mean, it looks like a fast ball middle in kind of has cutter action and it just bunches you up to where you can’t get your hands through and the barrel to it and not much you can do unless you recognize the spin early and you spit on it. Now batting Max Kepler inside ball one. Kepler 32 years old. He joined the team as a free agent. [Applause] Two balls, no strikes to count. [Applause] That one in there across the letters. Well, he went inside a couple of times and now outside. Hitter’s not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch. That one fouled off. Two and two. battling here as he fouls it away. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. The Royals up by two. Last half of inning number five. [Applause] outside and the count is filled up. [Applause] Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Oh, I think the key I mean if he can get through one more inning, anything after that, a hitter or two is bonus, but they should be lined up good enough to get to the finish line. Garcia makes the grab and there’s two gone. Now batting designated hitter Edmundo Sosa and the Royals manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Daniel Lynch will depart and that’s an excellent job from the reliever in the starting role today. Gave him some length. Back with a new arm after this. Now pitching for Michael Lorenzan on the pitch here and compared to a lot of other relievers, strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year. So the defense should be active. And here is Sosa to the plate. Flyed to right his first time. A swing and a miss. And that’s strike one. Well, in this one, the offense has sputtered. Somebody’s got to find a way to get on, keep the line moving, and manufacture at least one run. Then maybe you get two or three. And there’s a foul ball. Swing and he breaks his back. And that is that. Phillies down in order. They trail it here. Two nothing. All right, we go to the top half of inning number six and the batter now, Vinnie Pasquantino. and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Some bullpen action for Philadelphia. Christopher Sanchez up and loosening in the pen. Robertson, the right-hander, also getting loose. The 01 swinging a foul out of play. 0 and two now. Swings and misses. struck him out. Good late cut for the strike out there. That thing really got in on him. And you know, the cutter isn’t really a huge swinging miss pitch most of the time because it’s not really meant to move a whole lot. You’re just trying to miss the big part of the barrel and maybe get some weak contact, but that one right there did a whole lot more than that. That was a really good pitch. Garcia batting with one down takes a strike. Well, they say it’s the best pitch in baseball. Strike one. You get ahead on a good hitter as well. gives you a little bit more confidence to move through the at bat. In the air, right side and that’s a foul ball. Foul ball. It stays nothing and two. Base is empty, one away. And we’re in the top half of the sixth. And down on strikes. He’s notched four strikeouts now. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. Here’s a swing and a drive left field and he knew it. A solo shot. His 26th of the year. It’s 3 nothing. Singi. That’s his 299th career homer. Yep. Closing in on a pretty big career milestone. 300 will be extremely special. Well, he went up there O looking to do damage. I think he had his sight set on that pitch. He went and got it and circled the bases. [Music] And the Phillies manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make a move. Walker Beller will depart. Just never found his groove. Wasn’t able to settle in. New arm coming on. Back in a moment. Now pitching out of the bullpen for the Phillies. Christopher Sanchez. He’s having a ton of success facing left-handed hitters this season. So this seems like a smart move to turn to him with a lefty at the plate. So two away with nobody on. Adam Frasier steps in for the Royals. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. [Applause] That’s to third and that one handled. Zips it across. Frasier retired. That’s out number three. But the solo shot stretches their lead even further. It’s now 3 nothing. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. Bottom of the sixth inning. And now the short stop. Bryson stop. And that one is in for a strike at 95 and one. Bullpin action for the Royals. Taylor Clark appears to be getting loose. Long. The lefty warming up as well. [Applause] And that one fouled off. Line drive and a base hit right there. Had a good start to the inning. Still able to come through behind in the count right there. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages working on going to the opposite field and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did and he did it perfectly. And now they’ve got some speed on first. So we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. And now for the Phillies, Raphael Marawn. Ground ball to first. Could be two. Whit for one. Plenty of time at first. That’s a double play. For me, that’s one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield. first base has to get inside, create a throwing lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to first. Really good job all the way around. So the batting order turns over. So here’s Bader now. That hits the dirt and that is ball one. Pop foul out of play off to the right. [Music] Two outs. Drilled out towards left center field. That’s well struck. This one’s got a chance. And that one is off the wall in safely with a double. His second of the day. He was all over that one. Just missed out on a home run right there. But he certainly hit it hard enough. Just didn’t have the right launch angle to carry it over the wall. But still an excellent swing at the bat. So runner at second, two down. So digging in now for Philadelphia, Kyle Schwarber. That misses and it’s one and0. Two outs and one in scoring position. Next offering is fouled back. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. Fly ball center field. his belt and makes the grab and that’s the inning. So, no runs, two hits, no errors and one left on. Seventh inning coming up, it’s the Royals three and the Phillies nothing. Top of inning number seven and to the plate for Kansas City, Michael Massie. First pitch misses. And that drops in for a strike. [Applause] And that’s off the inside edge. And that’s ball two. Popped up. Schworber makes the catch. One away. [Applause] Now batting number 14. And here’s the first baseman, Jack Kaggle Leone. A walk and he’s also singled. just missed. Let’s go, Philly. [Music] And a swing and a miss there. going to really need to hang in there with that front side against this left-handed breaking ball. [Applause] Check swing and he held up. Chases the fast ball up the ladder. Struck him out. Boi just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Now a chance for Kyle Isbel. First pitch and he just misses. Two down, nobody on here in the top half of inning number seven. That’s right, Billy. That’s right. Fights that one away. Still one and two. Throwing the ball well. And they need this scoreless inning and relief right here. Been doing a good job keeping him in striking distance. Two down. Nobody on swing and a ball popped in the air and that’ll fall for a base hit. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. Back to the top of the order now. And now Mike Yremsky 0 for three in this one. That one almost got him. the lefty the one. That’s B. Isbel the runner at first with two gone. Next offering is in for a strike. [Music] They have a strike in there. Two balls, two strikes. Missed with a change up. Three balls, two strikes. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Now snap throw to first. Is back on a dive. Two outs. Stays alive. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. fouled off the plate. They’ll do it again. You got this. 3-2 on the way. And there’s a hit and out to a board. Well, he really had to battle for that one, man. That was so fun to watch. Everything was on time and fluid in that swing. Got a pitch he could get the barrel on and lined it into center for the knock. Those always feel good. First and second, two outs. Bobby Wit Jr. getting ready to hit. Take it high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. rolled softly, but that goes foul. First and second, two down. This ball’s chopped on the ground. Safe at first as they can’t make the play. Poo, he doesn’t care how he does it. He just wants to get on base. And when he does, that puts him in a position to do some damage. Put some pressure on the defense as well. His wheels are truly a weapon out there. And next up for the Royals, Vinnie Pasquantino. And it was a homer back in the first inning that got his day started at the plate. Yeah, Boo. A two-run blast. And that swing will give him confidence the rest of the way. Oh, he’s so good about trying to drive the ball to the opposite field gap in these situations. If he takes that approach, he could bust this game wide open. [Applause] Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Applause] Tried to check his swing. Appealed to third and he went around. Not an easy call there, but that puts an end to the inning. Royals wind up leaving them loaded, but they lead it three nothing. pitching. We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Sam Long. Well, he’s been a bit of a wild card out there in terms of throwing strikes. He’s definitely struggled with free passes this year. 345 up for the home team. Bryce Harper stands in for the Phillies. He’s grounded out a couple of times. That one finds the zone. Strike one. No need to offer that pitch until you get to two strikes. It’s just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and away pitch. Sliced hard but fouled down the left side. Foul ball still 0 and two. [Applause] Basketball is outside. [Applause] Next offering down low and in the dirt. swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Puts it away for the out. Now batting left fielder Brandon Marsh. Here’s the left fielder Brandon Marsh who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. And that drops in for a strike. There it was. Oh, here it is. Hit it. He gets a take. Gets ahead in the count. The Royals leading by three here. The bottom of the seventh. Highfly ball out into left center field. He’s got it out number two. That’s just a really nice catch on the run right there. He saved extra bases for sure. If the pitcher’s his friend, he’ll give him a second to catch his breath before he’s ready to deal the next pitch. Number four in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. That’s down and in. A slider missed. Good slider down and in can be so hard to get on plane with. You’re better off taking that pitch. and one and two. One ball, two strikes. That one just misses. Really good take, especially with two strikes. [Applause] Cut on and missed. And it’s a strikeout. And that is the inning. Nothing across here this half. Eighth inning coming up, it’s the Royals three and the Phillies nothing. Now pitching. Welcome back. And a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. David Robertson. And we all know about a slider. It’s just filthy, man. And one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Mikel Garcia steps in for the Royals. 0 for three. A fly out, a ground out, and a strike out. Come on, Philadelphia. And that’s outside. And that’s ball one. Well, these Royals doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game. And the numbers back that up. Despite having nine hits in the game, the numbers don’t exactly jump off the page in terms of exit velocity. Nearly half have been traveling less than 90 mph off the bat, but they’re finding a way to get it done. Ball catch inside. Here we go. Now, next offering is in for a strike. Swinging a foul straight back. That one misses. So a lead off walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Perez looking to hit career homer number 300 in this game. And now two and nothing. You know, Boo, 300 homers would be an amazing achievement for him. Fewer than 200 players have ever done it. Hit 300, you tie Chuck Klein. Hit 301, you tie Rogers Hornsby. I can’t wait to see if he pulls it off upstairs. Three and one now. Three balls, one strike. You got this. And that’s in there at the knees. That’s a great take right there. Even though it’s a strike, with the situation, runner on first base, you want to keep the ball off the ground. And you swing at that pitch, most likely you roll into a double play. And a base hit. Marsh quickly gets it back in. And it’s now first and second to start the inning. All over that one right there. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension. And he met it out front for the line drive knock. Now the left fielder Adam Frasier outside corner. There’s the strike. Now the one foul ball there. Robertson, he’s kind of a prototypical bullpen arm in today’s game. Electric stuff that results in a ton of strikeouts in a tough spot like this. That is a big time benefit. Inside. Almost got it. Come on, punch him out. Grounded to third. Could be two. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. No throw. Save at first. And we’ll see if it’s an error. Man, I was expecting 543 double play off the bat, but I think he just tried to be a little too quick there. Especially when you think it’s a pretty routine ball to handle. It’s really easy to think ahead to the transfer in the throw before you actually bring it into your glove. Digging in, Michael Massie and the first pitch misses for ball one. No, as a hitter, when a guy like this comes into the game, you feel like he’s standing on top of you and it’s just attack mode coming right at you expecting to get a swing and miss. [Applause] And that one ripped into right and it stays fair. One runs in. A second scores as well. Runner around third. The relay to the plate. He’s in there. Three run score and it’s now a sixrun lead. His confidence level is so high. Really nice job of coming through in a big spot. Ripped that one down the line and kept it fair. And even when you hit it that far out front, you still have to keep your hands tight to your body so you don’t hook around that baseball and put it in foul territory. And that right there was perfect. Here comes the manager out of the dugout and he’ll make a move for the bullpen. David Robertson gives way and he’s responsible for the runner on second. So the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Now pitching. Here’s the new pitcher for the Phillies, Ranger Suarez. This softball’s been really good against left-handed hitters. Jack Kaggle Leone steps in for the Royals. [Applause] Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield. And they get it in quickly. First and third now with nobody center fielder Kyle Isel. And now the center fielder Kyle Isel. [Applause] First pitch just misses. Massie at third. Kaggle Leone at first with no outs. And there’s the strike. Nope. Inside ball. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. [Applause] Lefty out of the stretch. Shrers at first and third. Swang in a line drive. Base hit out of center field. In comes the run from third to add on. It’s an RBI single. It’s seven to nothing. Four hits in a row. And they’re really swinging it here. You’ll often hear the phrase short to it, long through it. And that’s a great example of it right there. got the barrel in the hitting zone early, squared it up with the welltimed swing and came away with a beautiful line drive into center field. Yensky in now takes ball one off the plate. [Applause] Two balls in the dirt. [Applause] Four runs already in the frame and we’re in the top of the eighth. [Applause] Swing and a miss. Two and two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. [Applause] Still two and two after the foul ball. [Applause] also really good at bat. What I like about this guy, his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches. Out into left center for a line drive base hit. They extend their lead as the runner scores from second. It’s an RBI single. It’s 8 nothing. Short stop. So up now for Kansas City, Bobby Whit Jr., He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Plenty of offense in this one, Singy. I guess you’d say kind of what we expected, though. Well, this was a game looking at the pitching matchup where you expected offense to score and not as lopsided as this. Um, but yeah, you definitely expected to see some offense coming up. And there’s one down now. Daddy, the designated hitter, Vinnie Pascantino. Next is the designated hitter, Vinnie Pascantino. He’s already homered in this game. Pitch is in the dirt and that’s ball one. [Applause] That one missed. Still only one out here in the inning. Highf fly ball and that one curling foul down the right side. [Applause] fights it off. He’ll see another two on, one out. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Pitcher having a pretty tough time getting that swing and miss. Third foul ball in a row on the ground right side and that’s just foul. Five foul balls in this at bat so far. And these two are going headto head. You can see the crowd. They’re starting to get into it a little bit more and more each pitch even though there hasn’t been a ball in play yet. Two now. Swing and a miss. Suarez strikes him out. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strike out. And now it’ll be the cleanup spot for the Royals. Mikel Garcia. [Applause] That one off the mark. One and0. Two on, two outs. [Applause] And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. I got one ball, one strike. That’s down and in. You got two balls, one strike. [Applause] And that one is downstairs. They’re now three in one. Three balls, one strike. And that’ll load the bases. All four. Second walk of the game for him. and he’s been really patient at the plate, the game plan that he’s sticking to. He’s just not going outside of what he’s looking for up there. So, bases all loaded up. Perez now at the plate. And in the back of his mind, he’s got to be thinking about home run number 300. He’s sitting on 299 right now. And that misses and that is ball one. That one fouled off. Check swing and he went. That’s strike two. One ball, two strikes. [Applause] And that one missing low. Isbel on third. Yensky at second. Garcia on first with two down. popped up. Harper has a beat on it. He makes the grab and that’ll do it. But they tack on five runs. Last half of the eighth coming up. Royals eight and the Phillies nothing. This one isn’t exactly close. Chris, let’s go off script for a moment. I’m game. Were we on script? Never. Boo. Growing up, who was your favorite big league mascot? The Philly fanatic. Still the best mascot. Is there a reason? Well, I love the Phillies and I love Mike Schmidt. Michael Jack Schmidt. 548 home runs. He was my favorite. Well, some people say you and the Philly Fanatic kind of have some things in common. We have a similar body type. It’s true. And now it’s going to be Edmundo Sosa bowl for two. in this one. Fast ball for a strike. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Steven Kolick preparing to come on if needed. Sig getting cranked up as well. That’s off the mark and the count is one and one. So my dad told me that he had a bunch of Mickey man rookie cards and a whole bunch of valuable cards and his mom tossed them because what you know what did she know? So I made my mom keep all my baseball cards and I really don’t have any that are valuable and that story stopped by me anyway. Short stop two down base is empty. Bryson stop stands in for the Phillies a former first round pick and he’s really turned into a nice everyday player. The short stop takes a ball. [Music] Ball inside. The Royals up big in this one here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Next offering is in for a strike. base hit and that keeps the inning going. So important to get into the fielding position after you deliver that baseball. That is a scary one. Watch your lips. Here’s the catcher, Raphael Maron. In for a strike. It’s 0 and one. [Music] Next offering is foul back. [Music] The 02. That’s to third. Oh, and it hits the base to first and he beats it. Everyone’s safe. Did a nice job getting there. Good throw, but very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw, you know. Yeah, no question. And now Bader up to the plate. Drove it off the wall last time. Just missed out on a home run. And first offering is fouled off. [Music] Two aboard, two outs. [Music] And that one missing inside. A sharp slider out towards right center. That’s well struck. Dives, but it falls. And now it looks like extra bases. One run is in. Another scores. Two runs in on the play. It’s 82. That’s now three hits in a row for the offense. Put a really beautiful swing on that pitch right there. Just didn’t quite have the combination of launch angle and exit velocity to drive it over the wall. But when you can beat a center fielder like that, you know you hit it well. Here comes Schwarz to the plate. 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. Bader at third with two away. And another ball. When the skipper calls down to the bullpen, he’s expecting the guy to come in and get outs. So far, not getting what he was hoping for. That one misses. Three balls, no strikes. Bryce Harper waiting for a turn at the plate. [Applause] drilled in the air high and deep right field. Isbel going back in comes the run from third and it’s 83. Well, that was one of those high percentage advantage counts where batting averages are just so much higher. Great hands on that swing to take the inside pitch and drive it into the gap for the double. It’s easy to spin off a pitch like that, Boo. And can pull that thing foul, but that was perfect. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Sam Long out of the game and as he heads off, we’ll step aside for a minute. Back with a new pitcher after this break. Now pitching for Lucas takes over on the mound and this marks the 60th time he’s come on to pitch so far this year. Clearly a very relied upon arm in this bullpen. So runner at second, two down. So Harper stands in the first overall pick back in 2010. Fly ball to right. Yensky drops into the glove and the inning is over. Three runs on four hits, no errors and one left on through eight full. Royals eight and the Phillies three. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Orion Kirkering. Well, they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging. It at the plate left Adam Frasier [Applause] on the ground over to first and they get the lead off man in the ninth. Really nice job to get your first out of the ball game. Now batting second baseman Michael Massie. And now Michael Massie. [Applause] Ripped on the ground is second. The throw to first and a couple of quick outs. Now batting number 14 Jack Kaggle Leone digs in now. [Applause] That’s a little high. Ball one stirring in the Phillies bullpen. Matt Strom the left-hander up and throwing. Trevino also getting ready. [Applause] And there’s the strike. Good heater at 98. One ball. One strike [Applause] ball that’s outside. It’s a tough pitch. But in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When he elevates, guys aren’t touched it. [Applause] And a foul ball. He stays alive. Two down, nobody on here in the top of the ninth. [Applause] Ground ball left side and it goes just foul. [Applause] Strikes him out. Went with the sweeper and it worked. Nothing doing for the offense that time. Onto the bottom of inning number nine. 456 coming up. Royals eight and the Phillies three. And welcome back to the ballpark. So bottom of the ninth and digging in for Philadelphia, Brandon March. [Applause] First pitch misses. 10. right through there for his strike. Big at bat right here. He did the team thing. Took until he got a strike. Now he’s got to go to work. Shorten up that swing a little bit. Do whatever it takes to get on base. That misses. Two and one. Wow. Triple digits on the gun. I I know there are more pitchers that can reach that now than in the past, but it’s still impressive to watch. Out there to center and that’ll fall for a base hit. And a good start to the inning. Well, I don’t think that pitch would have been called a strike, but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock. Here’s the third baseman. One for three. First off, it just misses. Well, the leadoff man gets on. You want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense. Hopefully, the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two. Ground ball right side. Could be two to second. There’s one throw to first, but he beat it. [Applause] And now for the Phillies, Max Kepler. Max Kepler. [Applause] And that’s through there for a strike. 0 and one. 01’s the count [Music] [Applause] and that is out of play. [Applause] Got him swinging for the strikeout. Now only one out remaining. Now batting and Mundo Sosa will hit next. SA [Applause] and the first pitch misses for ball one. If he’s going to steal second, you want him to go early in the count. That way, he’s not a distraction to the hitter at the plate. Go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the pitch. And that one fouled off. [Applause] Pitch misses and a count two and one. Two balls, one strike. And there’s a ball. Just missing off the plate there according to the umpire and out there on the mound. Maybe trying to get an explanation. Can’t say he’s convinced, but it looks like he’s accepted it. The Royals leading by five here in the last half of inning number nine. So now two on and two outs. Pretty easy walk right there. Last pitch wasn’t even much to think about. Now batting short stop. Bryson stop. First and second, two outs. Here’s the shorts stop at the plate. Bryson stop. Sing. He’s got a history of coming through into big spots. I know I like to talk about I’m not sure whether clutch actually exists, but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots. That missed by a lot and it’s one and0. Well, I think it’s the ability to assess the situation, understanding what the pitcher has, what he’s trying to get people out on. Sends it to center and that’s going to do it. That’s the ball game. Sometimes road trips can be tough. if you’re away from your family. But when you can win, silence that opposing crowd, it makes things just a little bit better. Makes the road trip just a little bit shorter. 83 the final in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
