Steelers News: INSTANT REACTION After 31-17 LOSS vs. The Seahawks | Dumb Mistakes Ruin Home Opener

[Music] Steelers lose a tough one in their home opener during the 2025 NFL season, losing to the Seattle Seahawks by a final score of 31-7. Now, you lose this game by 14 and the Steelers unfortunately in this game due to self-inflicted wounds gave Seattle 14 points. That ended up being the difference. But overall, not a good enough day in all three phases for the Pittsburgh Steelers to come away with the victory. But I don’t think it’s time to panic just yet. Welcome into Steelers Talk. I am your host, Jack Spar. Uh make sure you guys click that subscribe button for all of our postgame uh reactions this year, whether they win like they did last week or if they lose like they did this week. It’s a one inone start for the Pittsburgh Steelers here, guys. And we’re going to be covering every single game from the black and gold this season. So make sure you guys click that subscribe button if you haven’t already. All right, so now let’s get into the final here. It’s 2817 there, Ponzi. Uh not 14. Uh but the Steelers, uh you know, tough performance today for sure. You know, and by the way, uh Seattle score is wrong as well. Um but you know, we got Rogers 18 to 33. Not the best day at the office for Rogers. One touchdown to two interceptions. It should have been uh maybe two touchdowns to zero interceptions, you know. Uh but you know, lots of self-infliction inflicted wounds. Jaylen Warren led both receiving uh and rushing. He had more uh receiving than that, by the way. But uh yeah, so listen guys, at the end of the day, just really, really bad uh self-inflicted wounds both on offense and then also on special teams for the Pittsburgh Steelers today. Caleb Johnson. Um that’s our first takeaway here on today’s postgame show. Uh that we’ll get to here in just a second. But first, some injury updates here. Um, we’re going to get more injury updates to you, uh, when Mike Tomlin takes the podium here. Um, should be quite a bit to talk about because Isaiah Loudermilk left this game with an ankle injury. Alex Heismith left this game with an ankle injury. Man, can we just keep Alex Heismith healthy, please? Um, but that doesn’t look great. Patrick Queen was fighting through a rib injury uh that he was able to play through and James Pierre had an arm injury. Also, Aaron Rogers got his arm hit on the final drive of the game. He was holding his arm um quite a bit there. Uh, we’ll see what that is. Uh if Mike Tomman has any updates, we’ll get you guys a video later in today’s show or later in uh today’s coverage, probably around halftime of Sunday Night Football. Uh but then we get to our takeaways here, guys, which is first one, Caleb Johnson. What are we doing, man? Um you know, that’s just a tough play for a rookie to go up there to have it touch you and then just to not go after the football. Like even if you think there’s a slight chance that it touched you, you have to go get it. All right. If it gets past you, plain and simply, if you make a play on the football and even if you think it doesn’t touch you, but like you tried to go get it, you don’t know if it nicked your glove, you don’t know if it hit your helmet, like you have to go get that. And that’s just a brutal rookie mistake from somebody that this team is really going to be relying on a lot over the next few years to hopefully be this the future of the running back position here in Pittsburgh and then to be a legitimate weapon in the receiving game, which he has not been to this point. uh he’s been extremely disappointing not only in preseason but now in the regular season. I’m sure that he’s really taken this loss hard because uh you essentially give the Seattle Seahawks seven points and made this fourth quarter a hell of a lot harder than it needed to be and it ended up uh leading to a loss here in Pittsburgh. Um but that’s certainly one of the big mistakes uh that this that killed the Steelers this afternoon. Uh but then also some concerns for the defense. Now, I think, you know, the narrative is going to be, oh, the defense, uh, gave up 30 plus points for two straight weeks in a row. Today, the defense didn’t give up 30 points. Like I said, you give them seven points on special teams. Um, but still, 24 points is too many. Um, you know, they looked like they were really doing a decent job stopping Seattle at at certain points and key moments. And then on third and goal at the end of the game there, you give up another touchdown on a toss play where Seattle was pretty much saying, “We’re we’re we’re good kicking this field goal here.” um and just not enough defense there. So, he did make some plays. He did get two interceptions. Uh but I thought Sam Darnold, you know, to his credit, looked good today. Almost 300 yards passing. Um that’s a credit to him in my opinion. Um you know, two touchdowns and two interceptions. So, kind of a very Sam Darnoldesque game. Um but I I don’t know how you watch Sam Darnold today and say he’s not a legitimate starting quarterback in the National Football League. He played pretty darn well. uh Kenneth Gainwell uh or Kenneth Walker after having a slow start to his season last week was unbelievable today over a 100red yards uh rushing of course in that final uh last little bit on a long third and goal getting him at that touchdown. The average is just unacceptable guys. Once again the Steelers run defense in certain moments they were really doing a good job and on certain drives they could stop them but you know when especially when Kenneth Walker was out there man no answer uh for number nine. So, uh, second week in a row where the Steelers couldn’t find an answer for an opposing running back. That needs to be addressed in the weeks to come. That’s probably my biggest concern at this point. But then we move over to the offensive side of the ball. Pass pro is an issue, man. It is. Uh, now I want to see what the average time throw was for Aaron Rogers because he definitely held on to the ball for longer to today than he did last week. Um, and Rogers certainly contributed to some of the sacks and the pressures today because he just wasn’t getting rid of the football. Uh, but Pass Pro once again did give up some easy pressures and it seemed like Rogers was just uncomfortable. Even when he did have time to throw, it it felt like he didn’t feel like he had time to throw. Um, so this is certainly something that could kill the Steelers chances to compete for a Super Bowl this year if they’re just not a good offensive line this year. Um, so we’ll see if that unit can get any better and we’ll see the film to see which players struggled and which players played well. Uh, but I can’t imagine that any of these guys played particularly great. Uh getting on to DK Metaf through two weeks, he certainly hasn’t been like a huge impact. Had four catches last week, had three catches this week. He got his first touchdown, had a nice touchdown catch today uh in the red zone, but you know, he just it just feels like the defenses are trying to take him away and then the other receivers aren’t doing a good enough job get getting open. Uh at least that was the case today. Um you know, you know, tight ends didn’t get involved as much this week. Calvin wasn’t nearly as involved this week either. Um, and just seemed to all culminate in, you know, is a good Seahawks defense. Give them credit. But, you know, Metaf has been pretty quiet through the first two weeks of the season. Um, and you know what they didn’t do today is they didn’t get him out in space. Like, you know, they got him a couple little slants. Threw him a couple slants, but like I really like that shallow cross concept that they ran last week to get him out in space. Um, you know, DK’s biggest weapon in my opinion is his yakability. you know, he’s kind of known as a vertical threat, but I really like his his yak ability and his his ability to make guys miss uh you know, out in space with his speed and then his physicality. It’s just tough to bring him down in open space. So, I want to see the Steelers utilize that skill set in him a little bit more often. Um but yeah, man, through two weeks, DK Metaf needs to be more productive moving forward. So, I’d say you guys uh great today’s performance from the Steelers, ABC, B, C, D, or F. Um I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of panicking people saying F in the chat. Um but you know what? I’m I’m going to give this one C minus D plus. It wasn’t a good performance, but there was certainly positives to take away from this in my opinion. Um, you know, all three phases, you know, Boswell was once again nails uh in the kicking game. I thought they had some good moments. They should have been two for two in the red in the red zone today uh for what that’s worth. And, you know, defensively they had some decent moments. Had two turnovers today. So, there was some good to take away, but overall obviously not good enough to get the job done. And when you include the self-inflicted wounds, I’m gonna give him a D for this game, guys. It just wasn’t a good game. But if you guys want to go down and grab a DK Metaf shirt, if you still believe in DK4, you believe in his future here with the Pittsburgh Steelers. You believe he’s a beast, uh, go to chatsports.com/pitweek 2, you guys can get this t-shirt on sale for 25% off. Uh, really do appreciate all of your guys’ support. 2 to get that t-shirt in your closet today. Now listen guys, uh today was not a good day for Aaron Rogers. Now the film will kind of show us if he was missing people that were open, if his if it was just poorly schemed offense, what the deal was, right? So we’ll see. And make sure you guys stay tuned uh and subscribe to the channel because we’re going to be having extensive coverage on what the film says about this game. But it just definitely seemed like Rogers was uncomfortable all day long, right? The only place where he really looked comfortable was in the red zone. um where Calvin Austin the third unfortunately uh on a on a play where Rogers is rolling out to his left. He kind of does like a scramble drill move and he gets in the throwing lane to Pat Frier move where it was a beautiful throw on the run. Would have been a touchdown and instead Calvin reaches out, tips the ball, and it goes right into the hands of a defender. Um, and that’s why, you know, this looks like uh one touchdown to two interceptions because that contributed to Rogers having to try and throw that second interception late in the game where he needed to try and score a touchdown. Um, so it could have very easily been a two touchdown, no interception game for Rogers. If that play doesn’t happen, and that’s kind of the other killer play when you combine that killer play that took seven points off the board for Pittsburgh and that other killer play from Caleb Johnson, that’s the difference in the game. 14 points right there, guys. and uh you know the Steelers would have been in this football game and would have had a chance to win it uh if those two plays don’t happen. So obviously uh you got to clean those two things up and you just got to play better generally. Uh I think Seahawks were the better team overall today, but uh Rogers certainly needs to be better. And something that I’m going to be keeping my eye out for here, guys, is that this is really the first test of A-Rod’s leadership because this is really the first bump in the road. And guys, there’s bumps in the road in every single season. All right. So, there’s uh you know, it’s very possible that this this Steelers team just stinks. They can’t protect the quarterback. They can’t get open and this offense is just going to be bad the rest of the season. Um but there’s also the chance that this was just a bad day at the office of a bad day at the office against a good defense and a good pass rush against a good defensive play caller. And you know, you the rest of this stretch here before the Green Bay game, very winnable ball games. You got the Patriots, you’ve got uh Minnesota, you got the Browns, and you got the Bengals who might not have Joe Burrow. So, like all four of those games to me, very, very winnable football games. If Rogers goes out there uh and and leads this group next week and in the weeks to come, I think that’s going to show that this team can overcome some obstacles that they weren’t able uh to stop the bleeding last year. Hopefully, Rogers’ leadership is able uh to turn around the ship in the weeks to come. But I there’s not a lot of positive on this postgame show, guys. You know, whenever you lose by multiple scores, there’s not going to be a lot of positives. But man, Jaylen Warren really showed himself to be the weapon that he is. over 130 yards of offense. Um, you know, he I think he might have had over 50% of the of the offense today for the Steelers, maybe well over that. Uh, he was the leading receiver and the leading rusher for Pittsburgh today. Um, you know, he was just way better than Kenneth Gainwell. And I don’t know necessarily why the Steelers have this obsession with Kenneth Gainwell putting him out there. Um, you obviously I understand you got to give Warren some uh some rest at times and maybe they don’t trust Caleb Johnson for some obvious reasons here. He’s fumbled. Uh thankfully the Steelers recovered last week and then he fumbled again today. Uh where obviously they didn’t recover and the Seahawks got a free touchdown out of it. So do I necessarily blame the Steelers for not trusting Caleb Johnson at this point? Yeah. But like um you got to find ways to get Jaylen Moore the ball even more than he did today. He touched the ball a lot. He was by far uh the team’s best offensive player. Uh dynamic with the ball in his hands, man. So you got to find ways to get him the football and they did today. Uh, but my overall takeaway from this game, guys, and I know this might catch some flak in the comments or whatever, but I don’t care. Uh, I’m not overly over overly worried, you know, like teams lose football games in this league, you know, it doesn’t matter um if you’re the best team or if you’re the worst team. Now, the better teams come back after a bad week and they don’t let it compound and they don’t let it uh uh snowball like the Steelers did at the end of last season where they lost five straight to to to finish the season. All right. And that’s where Rogers’s leadership comes in. That’s where Mike Tomlin’s leadership comes in. This is a bad game for the Pittsburgh Steelers, guys. There’s no doubt about it. But it’s also a reality where if you don’t make two crucial mistakes, the Steelers have a pretty decent chance to come out with the victory in this game and another gritty win like they had last week. So, um, obviously you can’t make those mistakes. Uh, but the Steelers are not going to make those mistakes every week, guys. They’re not going to give their opponents seven points like Caleb Johnson did today every week. They’re not going to throw a lot of touch uh interceptions. Rogers is just too good with the football. Doesn’t throw too many interceptions. All right. And Calvin’s not going to make that mistake every time. So, I still believe in this football team. I still believe in the talent here. It was a bad day at the office with a lot of self-inflicted mistakes. And that sucks because you give away a a potential home opener win here in week two. But I have every confidence that this team over the next few weeks with multiple winnable opponents is going to bounce back and we’re going to be getting back in the win column very soon. So, point the finger for me down there in the comments section. Who’s the most to blame for the loss today? Um, you know, I’ll probably point the finger at Mike Tomlin, the head coach, because there just wasn’t enough uh working today for the Steelers. Obviously, didn’t have Caleb Johnson prepared to know what he was supposed to do in that situation. Um, all the different things. Didn’t have Calvin Austin the third know what he was supposed to do in his situation. Um, going not going for it on fourth and one when you really needed a bit of a confidence boost from your from your offense. I know that that, you know, that criticism is is 50/50 hindsight, but you know, there just wasn’t enough good about the Pittsburgh Steelers today. I thought the Seahawks were the better coach team. I thought they were the better I think they were just the better team, period, today. And frankly, they deserve to win this football game and the Steelers did not. All right, so some final thoughts here before I say goodbye. I’m not panicking yet, guys. I’m going to have to see at least a couple of losses in a row, couple of really bad performances in a row before I’m like, “Oh my gosh, like this season’s over or anything like that.” But, you know, uh I think that there’s a great opportunity to turn things around in the weeks to come. And, you know, it sucks to lose a game where you just pretty much shoot yourself in your own face there. Um, and you know, shoot yourself in the foot and, you know, make mistakes that, you know, if you don’t make them, you would have had a chance to win this ball game. But sometimes that’s the way it goes in the National Football League. Mistakes happen. Uh, bad games happen. Uh, but I do believe still in the talent on this Pittsburgh Steelers team. I think that they’re going to win next week versus the New England Patriots. I feel good about that. Um, and I’m going to continue to keep the faith here on here on Steelers Talk. All right, man. That’ll be it for this week’s postgame show. I’m going to be getting you guys an at home video later tonight, probably around halftime of the Sunday night football game this evening. Um, so make sure you guys click that subscribe button if you haven’t already. Until next time, guys. Here we go, Steelers. [Music]

  1. I was compelled to agree with you about not panicking however, this looked like the same old Steelers from the past half decade in terms of the way that they actually lost, not that they lost but the way they lost

  2. Our oline is garbage, our defense is the highest paid in the NFL there is NO way we should be giving up this many points in 2 games. None of the rookies are playing up to where they need to be and neither is our offense. This team as it looks right now won’t be ready to win a playoff game for another 2-3 years. And our winning season streak? Yeah I don’t think that will happen this year I think that streak isnt happening anymore. This is the WORST Steelers team I’ve ever seen.

  3. Pittsburgh nation I want you to listen for the past 10 years now be true to yourself. We have not been able to score in the red zone no matter who our quarterback is we still can’t score in the red zone it’s definitely the coaching staff our play calling is horrible. Put a fool back in the game to give the quarterback a extra target to dump off to in the short game trust me I’ll be wide open he or the tight end and that will open the game up and when you run that fullback is there to help block for the running back It’s not hard Pittsburgh nation trust me with this and true still a fans no I’m telling the truth, I am tired of winning one game over 500 and saying we had a good season. Our coach has never had a losing season well dammit that is a losing seasonwhen we don’t make the playoffs or when we get in we get voted out the first round that’s a losing season in real still fans know it. We are tired. It’s time for a new coach. A new staff come on Mr. Rooney take charge.

  4. This is definitly the worst team Pittsburgh has fielded in a long time, we aren't even building for the future we are a Joke and this season is going to show it. We still have no Frontline and our Defense is hurting big time. Rogers will be lucky to make it 3 more games he can't take this pounding, this is going to be a Really Bad Year.

  5. Watched this game and they were right there at halftime!. What happened to the team in the second half I’ll never know 🤷 way to many mistakes, protection was pitiful in the second half, the defense getting gashed on the left side and up the middle terribly still remains a problem 🤷 teams aren’t having any success running towards TJ 🤔 but they’re killing them on the other side and up the middle? Thought all of this was supposed to be better this season with the additions to the team 🤷 almost looks carbon copy from last year this year🤔 what’s up with this offense line, they still look like 💩 besides a few plays? Who are the main O lineman not getting it done? It looked to me like Jones and the left guard can’t block routinely to keep Aaron Rodger’s upright🤷 they have to play a much better game if they expect to beat any of the better teams to win any playoff games!!! They chocked as a TEAM in the second half, thought Seattle wanted it more in the second half imo. They can play better than that, that offense line is still a big question mark moving forward I think!. 🤔

  6. I'm going to remain positive! After all we are only 1-1. But, D. Henry is coming to town and we definitely got to work on Rush Defense! Over 100 rushing today by the Seahawks Tailback. To many!!
