The Truth About Justin Sordif’s Impact on the Capitals
On today’s show, first impressions at the Capitals informal skates and which players have really stood out. Next on this edition of Locked on Capitals. You’re Locked on Capitals, your daily podcast on the Washington Capitals, part of the Locked On Network. your team every day. Well, hello and welcome into this edition of Locked On Capitals, part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day. My name is Dan Holy. I’m also the host of the weekly show called The Capitals Minute Cast, available wherever you find your podcasts. And as always, I want to thank you for making this your first listen of the day. So, in this edition of Locked on Capitals, we talk about the informal skates are underway. A lot of the veterans, pretty much the entire roster uh is at MedStar. What are some of the first impressions and what can we expect from the Capitals this season? I’ll talk about that a bit later. Lynden Lakovic uh picked in the first round this past summer. And listen, there’s no grand plans of him joining the Capitals this season, but what have we noticed in Lynon? I’ll talk about that and then we’ll talk about Crystal and prospects making noise. Listen, it is still my belief that Andrew Crystal will crack the opening night roster despite what some of the Capitals insiders are saying. And then I’ll talk about roster fights and some of my altered predictions. Uh but just let’s dive into it here and talk about these informal skates and uh how some players are already popping off the page and uh some of them are kind of changing how I think things will shake out. Um as I think that a lot of the players either they’re new to this team or they’re in a position where they know they need to impress that you’re going to see the best out of I’m going to say a line share of the lineup but certain players in particular. So, let’s dive into it and talk about what we have observed at these informal skates. As we know, the regular camp is going to start here soon. Um, but you know what I’ve said is that this what we’re seeing right now, it sets the barometer. So far, uh, this group is feeling heading into camp and what we’ve observed which players have taken steps forwards. Is there the possibility that some players have taken steps backwards? uh that you know despite what people say that it’s just you know the preeason the informal skates don’t read too much into it quite the contrary uh what we have observed I think has elevated certain players in particular but a ton of the Capitals players are already practicing at MedStar veterans Oie Wilson Stro Dubois Sandine there’s a long list of veterans and young players already in there putting in the work uh I think that the Capitals have a chip on their shoulder that, you know, they made it to the playoffs. Yes, that’s a good thing. They won the a playoff round for the first time since 2018, but I think they’re hungry for more. And the above all endall, of course, is winning uh another Stanley Cup. And that almost full team turnout has turned into skates into real high tempmpo sessions is what I noticed. skill work, competitive scrimmages, um we saw sprint test, that kind of stuff where the coaches and sta staff start, you know, mentally checking boxes in their head like, hm, that guy has picked up, that guy’s going to have to put in some work. And I think big picture, I don’t I haven’t noticed from the video that I’ve seen any players taking too big a steps back, but I still think that there are some players uh that I think are going to have to put in some extra work. But one player that I hear about on this show quite often is Justin Sort. What about Justin Sort? What about Justin Sort of? Well, I’m here to tell you he is going to make it interesting for the Capitals. A bit of a a foregone conclusion that he was going to be playing on the fourth line with Doo Hay and doubt and he very well might, but I think he might make it interesting for uh the Capitals coaching staff here. Um he joined the Caps uh for the first time for these informal skates. As we remember uh the Capitals picked him up in a pre-draft deal with Florida uh that sent two draft picks to Florida and my initial take on it of course was what are the Capitals thinking? First of all, who in the world is Justin Sort of? And why did the Capitals give up two draft picks to get him? I think we’re starting to see a little bit as to why the Capitals were so into uh Justin Sort. You know, the Capitals didn’t make a lot of moves, but I think some of the moves that they did make uh might be sneaky good moves. And we know he signed that two-year contract uh that kind of sees him as a lowcost, lowrisk move that could pay off long-term for the Capitals. And what do we know about the Capitals is often times they can find diamonds in the rough. Players that maybe were mismatches on their former teams uh come here and just slay it. Think Pier Luke Dubois, think uh Brett Connley, think um uh Devonte Smith P. these kind of guys. And what we have seen from Justin Sort of and to be clear here, he was never a bad player. He was just on a Panthers team or the Panthers organization um where there was a bit of a log jam where there was no clear path for him to the big team, the Panthers. So um it’s not that he was a poor player. The Capitals, I think, in a lot of ways, did in fact find a diamond in the rough. But early takes, what have we seen from Sortif on the ice? He’s really showing clean positioning. Um, other things that are noticed in the video, he finds space. He gets to the dangerous ice. And I think he’s going to challenge for maybe a bigger role in the team. He plays both center and wing and can operate in all three zones. I think the Capitals I think they did a good thing by trading for and acquiring Justin. Sort of. Now, to be clear here, I don’t want to get ahead of myself. Uh we haven’t even had the formal camp kickoff here. We haven’t had any preseason games, but encouraging uh I guess is what I’m going to see. Now, that positional versatility is the exact kind of tool that coach Spencer Carberry needs uh when he’s juggling these lineups. As we know, Spencer Carberry is apt to do. uh that if things aren’t working, he’s not going to kind of keep going down the same road of retreading the tire again, again, and again, the numbers back up why the Capitals liked him in the first place. Sort of put up 34 points in 43 AHL games uh with Charlotte last season. He also added 10 points in 18 Calder Cup playoff games. Again, on any other team around the NHL, I think he would have found a spot. It was, like I said, just a bit of a log jam uh with Florida. And the thing about him is he’s not a stop gap, right? I don’t think that, you know, they needed a warm body on the fourth line. He’s a guy who’s produced and played top minutes in the American League, which we know is still pro hockey. I I know sometimes people talk about the American Hockey League like it’s kind of a porative. Not the case. But what I’m seeing from these skates beyond sort of, and this is important, is that the veterans came back in strong shape. Uh we saw Tom Wilson put up big numbers last season, he looks faster and more explosive for his size. Uh we know that he is the captain in waiting. Uh when Alex Ovuchetkin does hang up the skates, but until then, the Capitals have a dynamic goal scorer, a leader, a guy that leads with physicality. Another player that has really popped off the page for me and it should come as no surprise he has gotten better and better year overyear since he has joined the Capitals and that is Dylan Stro. Uh still looks like a playmaker who can set the tone for big minutes up front. Listen guys, this is why he’s the guy that stirs the drink on the first line with the great eight, Alex Ovetkin and he’s proving why like no, this is my job. Nobody gonna take it from me. But when your top players are in shape on these early skates, everyone else has to raise their level just to keep pace. I think it’s good for the veterans, of course, to say, “Oh, you’re in that kind of shape. I guess I need to maintain or up my level.” And for the younger guys, I’m talking Crystal, uh, I’m talking these younger guys that they’re like, “Oh, this is the kind of compete level that I’m going to need to bring to make crack the big time roster.” So, there’s also a tone a tone element, excuse me. When almost everyone in the building uh is bringing it, when the competition is visible and obvious, it changes how the season starts mentally that I think if the Capitals go into this season, the 2526 season hungry that they want to make a big impact and they don’t want to take a step back, I think that is what is going to elevate them uh from teams around the league. Guys are getting testing tested early here. um roster battles like I’ve talked about and you can see players trying to earn trust in reps. Also, something that’s not um as easily quantifiable is chemistry, right? That we have seen chemistry between Leonard, we saw chemistry between Wilson and two guys that I think are kind of cut from the same cloth. Uh that it should come as no surprise, but I think that, you know, sometimes they say opposites attract. I think that at some point, you know, maybe in the future somewhere here, uh, we’ll see Leonard and Wilson working together. Quite dynamic. But, uh, the daily competitive pressure is exactly what turns the camp into an audition, you know, not just tuning up that, uh, I don’t think there are many players on this roster that can rest on their laurels and think, hey, I’ve got a spot. You know, I’m in there. You know, I know who is solidified and you can write it in stone as Oie and Wilson and these kind of guys, but there are secondary and tertiary players on the Capitals that I think are going to have to bring it. Later in the show, I’ll talk about some of those players. Uh, but already really early takes. I know that we’ve seen the players trickling into MedStar here for quite some time, but we’re near a full roster here. So, it is exciting. So big takeaways from this se uh segment here is sort of arriving and looking purposeful uh is the big headline. That’s the big thing I noticed. Veterans returning in good shape sets the bar higher. Um you saw Oie in good shape. You know a couple summers ago we saw the the picture of him with the big stomach. Um I don’t see sense any of that. Wilson even though he’s big looks in shape and the skates feel like meaningful work not just an exhibition. This is not just the players going through the motions. I think that the Capitals are poised for great things and if these really early skates are any indicator, I think the Capitals will hit the ground running. All right, so coming up here after the break, we’ll talk about what we’ve seen from Lynden Lacovic, Crystal, and prospects making noise. All right, welcome back into this edition of Locked on Capitals, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. You can find me on Twitter. It’s Dancaps2 and8. You can find the show on Twitter. It’s locked on Caps. So, in the second segment of today’s show, we’re talking about the big man himself, Ryan Leonard. Nope. Tom Wilson. Mm-m. We’re talking about Lynden Lacavovic, uh, a guy that played so well for Moose Jaw last year, a poor Moose Jaw team, uh, that he was elevated to team captain and despite playing on a poor team, really elevated himself and Ross Mahoney, who’s from Mooja, uh, really popped off and that is who the Capitals selected in the first round. So, let’s talk about lack of it. Crystal and other prospects making noise at these early uh informal skates here. So, let’s talk about Lyndon Lakovic. Of course, we remember last summer the player that the Capitals selected, 27th overall, uh he signed that three-year entry level deal at development camp and he’s been at rookie camp. And I think a really good opportunity for a young hockey player to see how you conduct yourself on at the pro level, the National Hockey League. We’re not talking about juniors, you know, we’re not talking about anything like that. You might be the best at where you’re at at that level, but skating out on the ice with big names like Wilson and Ovuchkin, that is huge. Uh he is a big frame, 6’4 and around 200 lb. and he spent this summer working on board play and his the defensive side of his game. Now, he is not a guy um I guess I’m going to say kind of like Alexe Protest that a big frame but not intrinsically a tough guy. I think that you know being 6’4 around 200 he might bulk up a little bit. You don’t want to go over the top but as long as it’s lean protein and loan lean fat I think that he could lean into the physical side of his game. You take a look at Leonard. Um, another guy that can grow into his frame, kind of like the way Tom Wilson did so many years ago when he entered the league as a big frame and kind of grew into it. Now, a couple concrete things he told reporters stuck with me. Uh, he said he trained with veteran NHL guys over the summer. Uh, guys like the Shen and Shay Theodore uh, came up and those reps helped him understand that week in week out habits look like that. Um, you know, like I say, there’s no grand plan for him to join the Capitals this season. We know that he is most likely going to be playing for Moose Jaw this next season. Not a knock. Uh, we saw what happened with Crystal last year. Colona and Spokane jumped through the roof, you know, as far as his numbers are concerned. That is what I want to see from Lynden Lakovic this next season is to work on your game. And I don’t think he’s going to be as far away as some people project. Um, but talking about that, working with those skilled NHL players, those are the kind of small daily details that speeds up a player’s transition, just knowing what is expected and um associating yourself with success. Uh, he also played uh a WHL preseason game and had a goal and assist in the exhibition. So, he’s not just practicing, he’s getting game reps, getting ready to go. Um, like I said, most signs point to him returning to the WHL. um for more minutes where he can continue to grow his game, to elevate his game, to be prolevel sooner than later. But this camp is important uh for him to show readiness. Um and I think that he’s shown that in really early takes. Um from the video that I have watched that he looks like he fits, right? I I wouldn’t say that, you know, he’s NHL quality yet, and I don’t think that he would say that either, but he has definitely shown growth, and I think, um, you know, associating yourself with successful players in the off season um, has bared fruit there. Now, the big man, the big man, I have not wavered. I have not backpedal. I still think that Andrew Crystal, this is going to be his season. If you look at a lot of the beat writers, a lot of the people that cover the Capitals, they’re like, “Yeah, they’ll probably play in Hershey.” Again, I’m leaning into this, and if I’m wrong, it doesn’t matter. This is my early take is Andrew Crystal joins the team. What have we heard from him at camp? He’s done the things that he needs to work on to better his game. He’s hired coaches to work on his speed and his skating, and he’s put on some weight. Uh, a bit of a smaller guy. He can’t get any taller. He’s done the things that he’s needed to work on. If you don’t know, I’ll catch you up here. Uh, Crystal’s been on the radar for the Capitals for his high-end offense talent for a while, and he led the WHL in scoring last season with 132 points. The guy is the real deal. Um, and I understand people often times were like, you know, that’s the junior level, that’s not the NHL. And I get that, touche, very true. But, I mean, if he wasn’t contributing at that level, that would also be telling. But a big part of his off season was focused specifically on skating mechanics and acceleration. Uh if we remember why he wasn’t drafted higher than he was in the draft is that his size and his skating were his biggest knock. But take a look at him. He looks better. And uh I think you know what we’ve noticed with these young players is accurate assessors of their talent. He said in his own words, he said, quote, “I feel a lot faster,” unquote. And I believe him. You know, it’s not like the old days where they like to pump your tires. I’m ready for the NHL next season. I believe that that is where he’s at. Um, and this is important for Crystal at this juncture in his career. Uh, we’re talking about what he has in his skill set, the things that he already has. Um, the skating is just a bonus, right? That’s making him a well-rounded player. We know that he has elite puck skills and a great hockey IQ. Uh again, a dynamic player that I think is going to be next level. If he can add reliable first step acceleration and fight a little harder on pucks and on puck battles, this guy is not going to be a guy that sneaks into the NHL. He is going to make the headlines. Um, and the staff has watched him in the last few seasons, and if those speed gains show up in the pre-season scrimmages, he’s the kind of player that could force the Capitals hand to make the big team. Uh, listen, you know, I’ve already talked, some things have wavered. I still think that Mcichael will be the third line center, and I’ve already kind of penciled in Crystal um as that second line left wing. If it’s not that, that’s fine. But that is just, you know, like sometimes you kind of take a look at the lineup and you’re like, well, okay, he makes the roster. Where does he fit in? That is where where I could see him fitting. But beyond Lakavic and beyond Crystal, Avon Maro Nashenko, a guy that is going to make it interesting. Listen, there’s only so many roster spots. I get that in the last episode, I talked about Leonard, Crystal, and Maros Nashenko making the team. Now, one of those guys could be a scratch if you know one of those could be would be Miro, even though I don’t know if that would be what is best for him. Listen, a lot of this is in their hands, but what I’m saying is that Marro Noshenko um is taking steps forward is what I’ve noticed. Uh and some of the young players here putting in skate tests and and kind of just how their puck handling. I think that Miro is going to be interesting. Another player, Sunonny Milano, is back and looking like a veteran who can push for a role. It’s going to be tough. Everything that I’ve seen from Sunonny Milano is this is the best version of Sunny Milano we have seen thus far. And uh those middle prospect types are where camp gets interesting. Um that we have projections and I have my projections on way where players will fit. It’s the guys like Milano. It’s the guys like Ethan Frank and Hendricks Lapierre that are going to make it interesting. So the main training camp opens a few days after at MedStar Ice Complex. The rookie camp is scheduled through Monday, September 15th. It is about to get real here for the Capitals. So, big takeaways from segment two here is Lacavic looks like a high upside, a big guy who still needs some seasoning. You know, again, I don’t think anyone thought he was NHL ready yet. Crystal could be the real camp storyline if his speed tests translate to gameplay. and the rest of the rookie pool is hungry, pushing, and making the depth chart, a real competition. It’s getting real here out there, folks. And I think this is going to be a Capitals team to remember. All right, so coming up here after the break, we’ll talk about roster fights and some of my predictions straight ahead. The best way that you can help grow the show is to subscribe to Locked On Capitals on YouTube and comment anything down below. So, in the final segment of today’s show, we’re talking about notes, predictions, what are some of the things that Dan has observed uh at practice thus far. So, final deep dive for today. Let’s talk about battles and roles where I think could actually happening when the roster decisions come down to it. I’m talking, you know, Milano, I’m talking Lapier. And let’s start with the structural point. The team has veteran anchors up top which gives them a baseline of stability. You’re kind of building around the team. Think about Ovetchkin and Wilson as the basement of the team, the structure of the team. Uh what you need is the building blocks, the young players, the next wave of great capitals players around. So that stability means the big questions are the middle six uh and the bottom six. So, those are the minutes and the flexibility where younger guys uh can make a big impact. Think Crystal, think Maro Nashenko, think Ryan Leonard. Um, and the competition there tends to be more wide open. I’m talking about other than the top roles there. And because the Caps have options, it makes roster decisions more interesting. And the one thing I know darn near certain um is that Spencer Carberry likes more options than not enough. And I think that he is going to have options galore this season and uh like I’ve talked about a guy to really circle a guy that could change the trajectory of the lineup. I don’t think anyone’s going to get bounced but it might change how things lay out is sort of presence is a practical wrinkle. Um, observers, myself included, at the skate suggest he’s a likely candidate to slide into a hardworking middle six or fourth line role early. Um, so the questions about why Sort of was brought in, I think we’re starting to see more and more why is that in a small sample size he has impressed. And that’s that sort of plugandplay option uh that will help you in certain matchups physically or if you want to forward who can eat minutes uh without sacrificing structure sort of fits the bill. Um on defense and in goal, the vets being sharp matters for how patient the staff can be with the prospects. I think that the blue line is pretty buttoned up. Um I think that it’ll be interesting to see, you know, who the extra defender is. is a Dylan Mrath. Um I have seen different options as well, but I don’t I think the forward core is what is going to be uh the most interesting. Um but with that, that also means these younger forwards have to be good in the little things to earn long-term looks. There’s not going to be any give messes. Uh Hendricks Lop here got a bridge deal. He’s not going to be given anything. He’s going to have to bring it. And one of the things that uh we saw from who was it Tom Galiti um is that some of the coaches early on were not impressed with the intensity from some of the players that they’re getting called out. Um so I think that that is going to be apparent that like I said I’ve said on the show if you’re an everydayer you’re going to have to work on the little things that are actually the big things. Winning battles along the boards, finishing checks, stick on puck play in the defensive zone. the responsibility with the puck, without the puck, you got to bring it here. So, now predictions. I like to predict and uh sometimes this is a bit of a a work in progress. Some of these are more obvious than others, but uh the top six will be largely vets. Uh Ovetchkin’s going to get his power play looks, of course. I still think that what we saw from Spencer Carberry and his utilization of of Alex Ovuchetkin is that you’re going to see more limited minutes. You know, maybe on par with what we saw last season, I don’t think it’s going to be much less than that. But what we saw from Ovetchkin is less is more with him. And being the fact that, you know, he’s going to be 40 years old, it’s not a knock on him. I’m just kind of being obvious here. Um that he’s still going to get time on the power play, but expect limited minutes. Stro’s playmaking will be a centerpiece of the top line. I had questions about if it was going to be pure Luke Dubois on the top line. I think that Stro has even gotten better. If you can believe it, he looks better. Again, really early take. Uh Pier Luke Dubois is a big minute player, too, and will anchor important matchups. Listen, we still need a second line center that’s rock solid. PLD fits the bill. Not to say that he might not get a look in some of the preseason just to know what kind of possibilities you have there. So the interesting part is the middle and the bottom, right? We’re talking Milano, we’re talking Lop here. Uh these kind of guys sort of probably wins a job early with his versatility and Chris Patrick said as much. Expect him to be on the big team this season. He didn’t wasn’t really too flippy floppy on it. He just said that expect him to be on the team. Um, Sunonny Milano looks like a short-ended odds bet to push for a spot because of his experience and skill. See, uh, again, uh, things are subject to change. I was unsure if Sunonny Milano will make the team. I’m still not 100% sold that he will make the team. Uh, we have not seen the formal kickoff of of the training camp and we haven’t seen any preseason games, but really early take. Again, subject to change. I think that Milano definitely could get a look. It’s up to him. Uh, Bavilier and Milano and Milano adjacent types will fight for the top nine danger minutes. Uh, and then you got the kids, right? You got Crystal Lacovic, uh, Avon Marroenko pushing for bump up opportunities. Of course, Crystal, again, I’m pushing out all the noise. I don’t like to other people to, you know, I like to be a bit of a neophy here. I don’t like to for people to uh affect what I say here is that I do think that Crystal is going to be on the big team. Lakovic in a couple years, Ivon Maros Nashenko, I’m pushing for you, kid, right? But um is he going to have sustainability? Uh so that is where it could get interesting. Um so that is where I’m at right now. I nothing has changed too much uh on my predictions except for Milano. He continues to be um just a really bright spot in the roster out there. I’m not going to lie to you guys there. Penalty kill will likely be veteran le early uh because you want dependable, reasonable players in those minutes. Um and those special team roles are fewer and coaches rarely hand them out to pure rookies unless they force the issue. Listen, I don’t think the PP and the PK is going to change, especially PP1 and PK PK1 are going to change a whole lot unless like they and you know, we’re seeing we’re reading that they’re hands forced here, right? Um but I think the cab surprise candidate other than sort of is Andrew Crystal. Um like I say, despite what some people say, you know, early pick to be um on the Hershey Bears, I think he is going to force the Capitals hand a lot. you know, similar to the way that um Alexe Prous uh did all those years ago where he was so good they couldn’t send him down. I think that Andrew Crystal is fully cooked and what we’ve seen, you know, he’s, you know, he’s just mature beyond his years, right? That he has addressed the things that he needs to address. I think that he is going to be a good fit for this team. Again, really, really, really early take second line. Uh Canardian kind of envision it like I’ve said, Crystal, PLLD, and Ryan Leonard. Uh again, it’s going to be interesting to see what Leonard has in the tank as well. In any event, excitement surrounds this as we’re edging closer and closer to the start of the regular camp. That’s when I think you will see the things kind of fall into their place and we’ll get a better idea at least tentatively on what this roster will look like.
