Chiefs vs Eagles Postgame Live

Chiefs came home to Arrowhead but came up just a little bit short against the Eagles. What changed and how do they build on it? The defense figured it out today on Locked on Chiefs Live from the land of the free and the home of the Chiefs. This is the Locked On Chiefs podcast. Welcome in Chief’s Kingdom for your second postgame rigomearroll in a row. We’re going to apologize for that, but we are going to give you the truth straight up and down from the get-go with Matt Derek at the stadium right now. Our insider joining us tonight. Week number two, similar outcome, different process. They did step up. It didn’t end up being enough. But was that enough to turn the season towards the positive? We’re going to talk there first specifically. The defense was able to accomplish some very good things in my point even though it wasn’t quite perfect. There are some takeaways and then we are going to come back and make sure that we talk about this offense, where it’s going and where it must go starting now. There is a lot to it. Matt, thank you for joining us from chiefs digest.com. Matt Derek, editor-inchief, as well as our man on the inside on the beat. You can find him at chiefs digest.com, chiefs digest here on YouTube, as well as 41 is the mic. I thought, Matt, they came out and they did the number one thing that I had been complaining about all week is they fixed their attitude. They showed some aggression. They showed some spine. They were there with some energy. I thought that was the bulk of the obstacle from last week. It looked like they corrected that out of the gate. How did you feel about him? Yeah, I mean, especially you look at uh coming out and starting fast, which is certainly something that this team wanted to do more normally about been on the offensive side, but even on the defensive side, they wanted to come out and do the exact same thing. And they did that. I mean, uh, didn’t really let the Eagles get anything on the first drive, three and out on the second drive, and you’re feeling in decent pretty good shape there. If if Harrison Bucker hits that long field goal, you’ve got a three three to nothing lead early, and you’re feeling a little bit better about things. And I, you know, we’ll get into the the tip of it, but defensively, not a whole lot to complain. Offensively, sure, there’s some conversations to be had, but effort, not a problem today. this this team came out and gave the effort on both sides and special teams too. So, I don’t have any issues there. You know, you watch this game and I it’s really hard because the offense played well enough at times, but they struggled. They wide receivers couldn’t get separation. They really had a hard time doing anything uh in getting into any kind of rhythm and that’s a big problem. I I did like what I saw from the running game at times. Obviously, there was a couple of plays where they came up short, but they stuck with the run to an extent. But the bigger problem with that is Patrick Mahomes is still your leading rusher and it wasn’t really particularly close. And I don’t get me wrong, I think it’s good when he has the ability to show that he can use his legs and get, you know, a couple of first downs with his legs. That’s fine. But he had to go into almost god mode to just make this game even relevant. And that was the biggest problem to me. Yeah. And you know, and I was looking at this, you know, throughout the game, the Chiefs had one pass that Mahomes had um until that down drive to Taekquin Thornton, one completion rather that went beyond 10 yards downfield and then obviously had two on the final drive. But not being able to get not even to the deep ball, but not being able to get to the intermediate ball was the real issue because again, you know, we turned in a little bit of Patrick Mahomes last year match Patrick Mahomes becomes a game manager and it’s hey, who is it? Is it the offensive line not stepping up? Is it receivers, the tight ends not stepping up? to me a little bit of everything because I once I mean it was a little bit of Patrick Mahomes and nobody else was was jumping along to help him out. I mean it’s Superman and the rest of the Justice League not to be found. Yeah, it was almost bizarre world to tell you the truth. And I think the big thing that I was looking for was how they went about their business and what the plan was. And I think both head coach Andy Reid and def coordinator C Spagnolo took the blame, the brunt of the blame on themselves after week one. I felt that might have been a little bit misleading, but they certainly played a part. Do you feel like there was enough adjustment to put the team in position enough that it was more about execution today? Or do you still think that there is a ways to go for these two people in in particular that run each side of the ball to really get into more mid-season form than they are the first two weeks? Well, you know what? The the Chiefs, I think, gave up today 216 yards. The defense gave up 216 yards to the Super Bowl champions with Jaylen Herz and AJ Brown and Saquon Barkley. Um, you gave 101 receiving yards to the Super Bowl champions. The defense stepped up. I mean, there’s no doubt nobody on the defensive side of the ball need to be fall on their sword today. I mean, and talking to the defensive guys, honestly, they all took accountability. I mean, everybody was saying that they could have been better. I don’t know how much better it could have been. I mean, they even stopped a a toss push and probably could should have probably could have and maybe did stop a couple of others, especially if I don’t think been called. Um, that’s probably a separate show entirely. I was gonna say, and I tell you what, you know, talking to to one in particular, he tried his absolute best to be as diplomatic as possible because I’m I’m certain that there was some conversation about making sure that you don’t get in trouble for criticizing the officiating, but I just I asked one defensive player if if they saw some movement from the from the Eagle Guard for the snaps and on some of those tush pushes, and it was just like a deep breath and smile. and then no it’s just out of your control moving on you know I mean it’s just and not wanting to talk and get you accusiating but the answer from the defensive side was we didn’t want to be in those situations that if you keep from getting into push situations you’re going to be you’re going to be fine letting get into third and short fourth and shorts was what let the Eagles do what they do and that was their frustration on the defensive side because why did their job now Andy Reid on the podium after the game fell on a sword. He says he’s got to do a better job of putting the guys in in places. And this where I guess I I have a little bit of a criticism because, you know, I wouldn’t blame Steve Spagnolo if if he wanted to say, “Hey, we had some injuries today because they lose Mike Dana, they lose Christian Fulton.” Guy stepped up and they moved along. The offense knew that they didn’t have Jaylen Royals. They knew they didn’t have Xavier Were. They knew they knew they didn’t have Rasheed Rice. So, don’t know what the big surprise is this week about game planning for the guys that you have and just didn’t look like that they game plan for the guys that they have. I was just going to say crazy thing to me when you look at the tushbush uh centers probably off sides to begin with and then you don’t talk and you start talking about the guards going early. That play is going to be impossible to stop and the Chiefs actually got it done once wasn’t enough. But you’re right, you don’t want to be in that situation as a defense and you’re not going to use that as an excuse that you lost. But the reality of the situation is you have a chance to win the game or at least put it to where you have a good chance to win the game and one of your biggest superstars pops the ball up in the end zone and gives up basically a 14point swing. At that point, Travis Kelce looked like he was walking in for a touchdown. Uh, and it went the other direction. And I have to say this, give Josh Simmons credit. He saved a touchdown. It ended up not mattering later, but he saved a touchdown at that point. Yeah, that was ridiculous for I mean, once again, you under the category of stepping up. Uh yeah, your left tackle with a with a repaired patin running 18.38 miles an hour downfield. The the tackle a guy that’s stepping up. So, and uh talking to Josh Simmons after the game about that specific play and Drew Tranquil walked by and on his way out the door just said heck of a play and give him a fist bump. Said heck of a play again on his way out the door. Um so yeah, the defense was impressed by the play of Josh Simmons on that tackle. That goes a long long way because you all got to circle the wagons yet again. What can they take away from it? There is a lot particularly on the defensive side where they stepped up. That’s next. This episode is brought to you by Prize Picks, the daily fantasy app where making the right call can actually pay off. You and I make decisions every day, but a prize picks being right means cashing in. I did a little bit today. I got some things not on this particular game, but with football back prize picks is the simplest and fastest way to get in the action. Just pick more or less on two to six player projections and you can turn your takes into real prizes all in less than 60 seconds. I did take the lines on over Patrick Mahomes. They were giving it a 0.5. I did take more for uh Travis Kelce over.5. Now Travis, despite today’s effort, made some nice plays and did put up some yardage. I cashed in on both of those and you could have too. Down load that prize picks app today. Use our code locked on NFL. That’s good for $50 in lineups after you play your first $5 lineup. That’s code locked on NFL. All one word for $50 lineups after you play your first $5 play prize picks. It’s good to be right. Now that said, being right is only half the battle. You have to make sure that you can all be right in the same direction. As you said, I think the defense cannot be laid at its feet. you hold the champ to 20 points. In years past, that was an a double-digit win for this team. Right at this point, I felt like especially early, the tone was set. And I want to call out Chamari Connor because he struggled in coverage lately, they flipped it. And they had Jaden High. They had Chamari down a little bit closer to the box. He was able to screen downhill. He stuck his face mask in a bunch of runs. I thought he lifted his game. I thought Brian Cook lifted his game. And I think for a secondary that I was concerned about last week, even before this team lost Fulton today, Matt, I think that was the turning point is that the secondary allowed themselves some grace, put it back out on the field, and raise their level of play quite dramatically in game number two. Yeah. I mean, you allow 3.9 yards per pass and 3.7 yards total per play. And I mean, if anything, giving up 20 points is a little disappointing, but then again, they were handed some short fields. And on a couple of those short fields, they at least mitigated the damage because this could have been a whole lot worse. But at the same time, I mean, offensively, and this is a little bit on the defense, but I I I will I think it’s one of those things you could look at the glass half full, glass half empty. um the glass half empty with the Chiefs defense you would say didn’t force the Eagles to make any mistakes but you know what sometimes the other team plays a good ball game. I mean the Eagles didn’t make any mistakes. They didn’t make any plays. They I mean the 13 and honestly the the worst play the defense had all day was that 13 yard touchdown by Saquon Barkley. That that’s the one that they couldn’t have. They just the Eagles blew him off the ball. Chiefs broke down. I could have run through that hole that Saquon Barkley had and that was their first play of the game. Um, other than that, they they did their part. I mean, and and credit to Eagles for being disciplined and not making any mistakes. Um, but I think you have to I mean, there’s there’s just no way to look at this box score, look at these numbers, look at the film, look at anything you up to and say, “Hey, the Chiefs defense, you know, cost them this game at this moment.” There’s I don’t feel like that there’s anything you could point to. I mean, other than that’s one, you want to point to that, you’re still giving up at least three points there. Maybe you still give up a touchdown. Uh maybe it ends up being another tush push touchdown, but that’s their worst play. And it’s a 13 yard play. I mean, that’s that’s saying something. So, I I can’t I can’t fault anybody on this defensive side. And if anything, I want to I think there’s couple of guys that you have to, you know, give credit to. I mean, Omar Norman Lot in his first game gets a sack that just about decapitated Jaylen Herz and about punished a quarterback about as much as you can in the NFL today without drawing a flag because he also just made sure he didn’t land on him. Had he hit him like that and landed on him, he probably would have gotten the flag, but he didn’t. So, he got away with that. Um, Ashton Gelotti has to come in and play a much bigger role um, you know, than he did last week with Mike Dana going out. I thought he played relatively well. Null Williams steps in for Christian Fulton as the number three corner, which might have surprised some people that he was in over Josh Williams, but I kind of figured that might happen if if if once Christian Christian Fulton got knocked out and then has a great play against Devonte Smith to break up that pass. I mean, you just you don’t get better. Honestly, I mean, that that throw to that he broke up was the exact same throw virtually that Trent McDuffy made hash of on the other side of the field late in the game. So, I I think to me, you know, that that’s give give Noah Williams credit and those three young guys played well today. Yeah, I was really impressed by the young guys. I was really impressed null Williams was able to step in and do what he did on defense. Uh, and I absolutely loved Omar Norman Lot’s sack and you’re absolutely right, Matt. I was surprised they didn’t call a penalty on it. Not because it should be one, just because of the way it looked. I mean, that looked like something where you would expect them to, but he he pulled it down. He pulled the ball down and was a runner at that point. So, it shouldn’t been flagged. So, it was the correct call, but you watch, you know, Anull Williams come out there and play after not really, you know, playing a little bit in the preseason, but not really having a ton of snaps with the first team and being able to do what he did against Dvonte Smith. I think that’s encouraging going forward. The secondary for the most part, uh, when you allow only 100 yards in the passing game or just a little over 100 yards in the passing game, it’s not your secondary’s issue. The one thing that we would need to talk about going forward for this defense, though, is pass rush. They couldn’t get to Jaylen Herz unless they blitzed. And that’s going to be a problem. They cannot continuously send a blitz just to get to the quarterback. They have to be able to rush the quarterback and get pressure with only four. And that is going to be something that I think they need to work on going forward. But Matt, what was the other thing? What was one more thing that you noticed on this defense that you were really impressed by? I mean, I I think I’m trying think there’s anything that I mean, yeah, were some of the things that stood out to me the most. And you know, Ryan mentioned Shamari Connor. Shamari Connor had a really good game and probably two young two guys that have drawn some criticism past and Shamari Connor and Jaylen Watson, both of them both had really good games. So I I mean I think you got to give it up to them. Uh I was really impressed with both of them. You know, once again, it comes down to so many times these games and like we talked about with the Eagles, it comes down to mistakes and I didn’t see any mistakes from those guys tonight and that’s obviously has been one of the the criticisms of Jaylen Watson is that there’s some inconsistency. I didn’t see that tonight. Um Jamari Carter once again moving around. Thought he played really well. I didn’t see any Jamari Connor mistakes tonight u this afternoon. How whatever time we played. I’m looking out on an empty stadium under the lights in the dark. So, I feel like it’s night time now. Um, but no, I mean, and there’s not really anybody in the defensive if anybody on the defensive side that I would point to and say they had a rough game, I think it would probably be Chris Jones. Chris Chris had a couple penalties that cost him in some places. They’re not, you know, I mean, not not out of control penalties, just, you know, silly little mistakes, you know, lined up over, you know, holding here and there. I mean, there’s just a couple things that can’t happen and and there and that was your your defensive leader. So, that’s the only thing and and that’s probably part of a bigger question is that, you know, if if some of the guys that were struggling the most are your two older leaders and Travis Kelce and Chris Jones. I mean, if it continues to happen, then you’re going to start having questions that I think it’s reasonable to ask yourself that, hey, are your old stars just getting a little too old and maybe you just can’t depend on them in the same way that you used to? Really quick, you made a point, Matt, of this defense did everything that they could and the Eagles really didn’t make a bunch of plays. They made one play that sticks out to me. Uh that AJ Brown catch, I have no idea how he got the ball, but that that c I mean that got them a first down. It continued the drive. It’s those types of plays that are back breakers later on. Sorry Ryan, I stole your thunder, but No, no, you’re fine. That’s a great play to bring up as well. I do want to just say that kudos to Omar for getting in there, but that sack was a coverage sack. If it isn’t for the secondary, that sack doesn’t happen. So, we have to give credit to them as well. And I think when we take a a bigger step back, we have to appreciate some of the things that the defense allowed the offense to do. How they dealt with that was not maybe the best takeaway, but one thing you have to do is make sure that you’re adaptable. They certainly did that. I want to get down to the basics of how they can help Patrick going forward. That’s after this. This show is sponsored by Better Help. We all turn to funny places for advice. Patrick once again tries to raise his game on his own when he felt he need felt the need. I I feel it was a little premature and I think it rattled him a bit to be honest and I want to start with the quarterback because we rarely start with criticizing Patrick Mahomes but I do feel that overall the offensive line play was as good as it could be expected. Pressure coming mostly on the inside from the guard spots caught me a little offguard as well. I think uh through three quarters, seven pressures out of I think 10 had come from the guards. But I that said, I don’t feel all those pockets had to be bailed from. I think Patrick got a little bit out of there early. And I do think he missed a number of throws in terms of accuracy that we’re not used to. Is that in your opinion a byproduct of the hype or the pressure of having lost in a very frustrating game last week or is that a a byproduct of still we’re in game two and this line still isn’t uh fully gelled? Yeah, and this is to me Ryan a little bit of a 30,000 view because we’re talking after the game and just watching it and you know you’re probably going to change your opinions when you watch the all 22 and look at everything. I might change mine because I mean two thing and two things can still be true that Patrick Mahomes did everything he could to put this game on his back and drag them and will them and that two he made some misses that he wasn’t perfect either that he made some mistakes and uh you know weird thing to me is that you know obviously historically it’s always been that if you blitz Patrick Mahomes you’re going to pay for it he’s going to find the open well it’s just not happening anymore more and it certainly didn’t happen today because his numbers with a clean pocket versus blitz uh were dramatically different last found the last numbers that I saw. So I don’t know if the last couple of that last drive is going to change much but you know in the first half the the Eagles blitzed him 41 of the time and once upon a time you would say if Patrick Mahomes gets blitzed 41% of the time you’re going to get roasted and that didn’t happen. Now, is that not happening? Because, you know, and today in particular, he doesn’t have certainly his top two receivers and three of his top. I mean, I did I made a note, you know, in the press box to some of my colleagues that’s like, you know, hey, we’re talking about these two teams and at this point, the Chiefs and the Eagles offense were relatively even. We’re talking about this and but one team got their complement of receivers and if we’re talking about any other team in the NFL doesn’t have their top two receivers, their offense is probably looking like the Chiefs look right now. Uh, but there’s other things too that are just perplexing and concerning because, you know, we’ll see how the numbers came out. But again, I saw the Eagles with a lot of light boxes today. You know, six guys in the box. And if you can’t run more than, you know, your Isaiah Pacheco 2.2 yards per carry today, if you can’t get more than 2.2 yards versus light boxes, that’s a problem. And you know, so I I mean I there’s something has got to change on the offensive side. And is it is it Mahomes? Do you need to settle your quarterback down? Is it the offensive line? Do you need to up what you’re doing up front? Because right now it looks like some defenses are really picking apart what you’re doing. Um do you need to, you know, change things a little bit? You’re you’re you’re not really doing anything rotation at receiver. They’re just playing right now three guys and every once while throwing out Nico Roho and Jason Brown if somebody gets tired and even then I mean those guys only had a couple of snaps. So you’re really just rolling with three guys. There’s notation there. And I don’t Nico catch there for 21 yards reminds me it’s just like you got these guys are on the roster. They’re NFL players for a reason. If you’re not willing to throw them out there at receiver and you just want this guy to be a special teams player and at this point I don’t know what you’re doing with Jason Brownley, you need to put these guys on the field. It’s time to give them the opportunities because obviously some other guys have had chances and you know Hollywood today you know last week was you know we had 16 targets but 10 catches. Today was five on five. That’s the more, you know, I mean, I I thought I I thought in some ways today Hollywood played a better game than he did last week than just didn’t maybe have as many opportunities. But again, you know, quarterback is either unable and and and I I don’t want to say unwilling because I don’t think that’s the case with Mahomes, but maybe it is. He’s just doesn’t have the trust in these guys, but if if he’s not able to get the ball more than 10 yards downfield, something’s wrong. something with the play calling, something’s wrong with the line, something’s wrong with the receivers. Maybe it’s all of the above. But this team, even if you get Xavier Worthy back next week, which if you do, I think it’s going to be a diminished Xavier Worthy, you you still have a lot of things to figure out because this offense right now looks far from fixed. And I don’t think Xavier Worthy is a mad you want. No. you know, watching this game, I think it was I don’t remember if it was the second or third play of the game, Mahomes tries to throw an intermediate route to Noah Gray and just overthrows him. And that was a sign of things to come because go back and watch some of the big plays that they did have. Travis Kelce catching uh it was a fourth down catch for 18 yards, but he had to pick it up almost off the ground. Like the throw wasn’t great. Uh Mahomes missed a wide open Taekquin Thornton with nobody within 10 yards of the guy and air mailed it five yards over his head. And that’s something that he has continuously done struggling to hit that deep ball. I thought on that one specifically, he didn’t put any air under it. Kind of went back to almost what we saw last year with him trying to throw the ball deep. He didn’t put air under the ball and that’s what causes that type of thing. And even the touchdown to Taekwon Thornton, that wasn’t a great throw. The nobody was within ta within five yards of Taekquin Thornton when the ball was let go and Mahomes threw it inside. If he throws it outside, it’s an easy catch by Taekwon. Now, yes, it’s a touchdown. Yes, it’s a great play and it they get the score, but his deep ball and even his intermediate ball was off today. And some of his shorter throws were not great either. So, while he did a lot with his legs and he made uh plays with his legs and he made the Chiefs get close to being in this game and having a chance to win, uh he struggled at times and there was some real issues. And I hope that they can get it figured out going forward. I’m really curious though, Matt, do you think the play calling is going to be something that they’re going to need to be changing because you don’t have any consistency right now? The offense just isn’t consistent. That’s interesting. Yeah. Well, the first thing out of Andy Reed’s mouth is that at his post conference, his press conference after the game was that it’s on him for not putting guys in the right spots and and what he’s absolutely is exactly that. Yeah. I mean, it’s it is game planning and coaching and I don’t there’s any doubt about that. So, that’s a a huge piece of the puzzle and I’ll be I mean, hey, he might get into the game. This might be the case. Sometimes the backup is the most popular guy in town and then when you give up the back the backup some opportunities you realize maybe the backup’s not ready. But I I need to see some Bashard Smith. I know he got the one touch today had a had a two- yard run had a pass that was over his head. So you can’t really on Smith but right now I mean Kareem and Isaiah are not giving you anything out of the back field. So, you know, I I think you’ve got to look at guys and whether it’s that Rashard or whether it’s Elijah Mitchell. I mean, you need you need something to change in that back field. That’s one. I mean, two, you know that you’re going to get your receivers back at some point and everybody can go back to their roles. Um, you know, hey, is it is it a stretch to ask Hollywood to be the number one receiver? It shouldn’t really be, but Hollywood’s probably better suited to be your number your number three guy. Uh Juju Smith Schustster, a beloved veteran, but he’ll tell you. I mean, his knees are terrible. So, can he be your number two guy at this point in his career? No. And and Taekquin Thornton that the touchdown was a great example. I mean, he’s he is a speedster. He can run out he can outrun any cornerback in this league. So, the opportunity to throw him a deep ball for a touchdown at any point is absolutely possible. But when you’re talking about the full route tree, everything else on that route tree is not his strong suit. He’s got one route that he great and everything else probably kind of average. So he’s like a number five six receiver for a reason. Yeah. And I think that that will slowly morph as you said when they get players back. The only thing that other thing that I will add and I I know we got to let Matt go here. I saw 13 personnel twice on the field. Maybe they got a few more snaps in there that I didn’t recognize, but live I only saw two. I I think one of the bigger plays that Kel had was on that under drag that we know Robert Tondie can run. Your preseason favorite guy, they need to get him on the field as well in the meantime before Rashi Rice returns. That’s going to do it for us, folks. We’re going to thank Matt for his time uh in a busy area of Arrowhead tonight. Thanks for spending your time with us and getting us caught up, Matt. Appreciate you guys. Take care, everybody. 1. Let’s keep things in perspective…

Harrison misses a field goal, gifting them a short field and a TD…7 points

Eagles kick a walk off field goal at halftime.

Short and fourth on our 36, we go and miss, giving them 3 points…10 points gifted.

87 misses a TD, ball return to the 41y line. McDuffie tips the ball, just out of the fingertips of Hicks. Missed penalty twice, would have moved them back to fourth and goal on the 6y line. Eagles TD, 17 points gifted.

If even one of those things doesn’t happen, it’s a different result.

  2. Man I love those Chiefs. They don't give up. They're not making excuses, though missing the two top receivers is pretty obvious. They will be there at the end. No doubt in my mind. They played two really good teams. There's no shame with my team. Go Chiefs! Oh, and what in the hell is wrong with the NFL? Making the Chiefs ride a 2 1/2 bus ride is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. That was total BS.

  3. The league has to do something about the cheating tush push, even the broadcasters saw the guards move the TD play.

The run game had flashes but running up the middle rarely works for the Chiefs,

Lastly Mahomes was horrible, his running was great but couldn't hit the side of a barn if he was standing inside it. His deep balls today were like a SCUD missile, absolutely no accuracy.

Reid again said the same thing he always says, he needs to put the players in better positions yet he has the same stale running game plan.

  4. I think it’s safe to say THIS ERA of the dynasty is over and it’s time to build a new one. Kelce Reid/Nagy and Veech need to go. These past two drafts have not been kind to Brett. Mahomes took a pay cut so they could put better players around him and pay them and they still have an underwhelming roster around him.
