🔴LIVE 🔴Milwaukee Brewers vs Texas Rangers /September 09/ Baseball Envivo/MLB the show 25
and the Texas Rangers. And now, and we’ll be back with the first pitch right after this. Texas Rangers just about ready to go. And on the hill today, Jake Latz. And Chris, he seems a lot more comfortable pitching here at home than on the road, right? Indeed, Boo. And there can be several factors, whether it’s just sleeping in your own bed, being around your family, going to your favorite restaurant before you come to the ballpark. I don’t know what it is for him, but the numbers are clear that he’s been dominant in this place. The only frustration is you see how good he is at home and if you’re a teammate or a coach, you’re looking and saying, “Hey, if you can be almost as good as that on the road, you’re going to have a great year and we’re going to win more ball games.” Waste no time there. He clearly didn’t catch that one on the big part of the bat. just kind of muscled it out there. And you know, on the mound, it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher, but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes. And now they’ve got some speed on first, so we’ll see if they try to get him into motion. Jackson Torio stands in now and watches strike one. Now snap throw to first. Terang back on a dive. The pitch that one fouled off. This is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball’s got to be hit extremely hard right at him if they’re going to have a chance to go for a double play. Terang on at first. Nobody out. him down. And that’s in the dirt. Well, with the amount of pitches that can end up in the dirt, a good secondary lead. Doesn’t have to get away from the catcher, but if you’re anticipating based off the trajectory, get yourself in the scoring position. And that’s ruled a swing. It’s a strikeout. And now it’s William Contrarus. [Applause] And that’s in there for strike one, [Applause] man. At first, one away. There’s a swing and a drive. That one’s back. And it’s out of here into the home bullpen for a homer. And that gives them a lead. It’s two nothing. That’s a fun way to take the lead. Just hit one out of the park. That’s an impressive swing of the bat to go over the wall to the opposite field gap. And you know, there are a lot of guys that just don’t have the pop to do that and probably just as many who don’t have the approach either. He let that ball travel and he got great extension on the follow through to drive it out of here. And now it’s Christian Yelich. Just missed. Next offering in there for a strike. Strike one looked pretty good as far as being in the strike zone, but I’m sure as a hitter not too good with where it was located. Very top of the strike zone, middle away. Still only one out here in the inning. Next offering is downstairs. [Music] In the air, right field, Freeman makes the catch and there’s two away. Let’s take a look at the Brewers lineup. It’s something they’ve talked about needing to improve on moving forward is their ability to apply consistent pressure, Chris. Right now, it’s not a club that gets on base enough. And sometimes, Boo, you just need a hitter to go up there and grind out and at bat, maybe have 11, 12 pitches, and all of a sudden, players get fired up in the dugout and they want to do the same thing. And before you know it, you start to get base runners on and you get a big hit and all of a sudden you ride that wave for a few days and go on a winning streak. That’s something they definitely could use on the ground right side. Moore whips it to first. Third out, but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. And it’s two zip. Back after this on the show. Back here with my pal Singi and starting in this one, Jose Kintana. What should we keep an eye on here? And a guy like this is gonna keep you in the ball game. He’s going to go out there, compete, not going to see a whole lot of flare and flash, but he’s going to hand it over to the bullpen at some point. And if you’ve been able to score a few runs, you’ll be in it late. So, we’ll see if he’s able to do that for his club in this one. We go to the bottom of the first now. The left fielder, Wyatt Langford. Ground ball left side to first. One gone. Bottom half of the first. And now we take a look at the Rangers lineup. They do a lot of things well in this offense. Singi. They control the strike zone. They make pitchers work hard for outs. And as a result, one of the better OBP teams in the league. Well, what I love about it is it’s an organizational philosophy. Whether you go to instructional league, whether you go to spring training, you see these guys even during batting practice when it doesn’t matter. They’re practicing that type of approach. Boo. And when you have that filtering through the organization, even when you call up a player, he steps right in and dives, but it falls. And now it looks like extra bases safely into second. He’s got a double. You know, you translate on base percentage, it’s basically this. Teams that have a high on base percentage, they don’t make outs at a very high rate. As my buddy Joe Sheen says, OBP is life. One out, runner at second. Here’s Josh Young. And that’s in for a strike. Runner takes off. Pitch misses. Throw to third. Save. [Applause] the one-1 and that one fouled off. Foul ball still a one and two count. Freeman stands at third with one gone in the inning. [Music] [Music] Come on. And now it’s even up. [Applause] And there’s a ball [Applause] and ball four, two aboard. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. Two on, one out. And next will be the cleanup hitter, Jake Burgerer. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season, so they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. The last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground, but I wouldn’t expect many pitches up in the zone. They’ll be pitching for a double play in this spot. In there at the knees. Big pitch right here. He’s going to try to make a pitch. It’s going to produce a strikeout or a ground ball double play. And now one and two. Lefty out of the stretch. Runners at first and third. Pitch misses there and the count’s even at two. [Music] Two on, one out. Foul ball. Another two- two upcoming. bows it back with two strikes. Still two and two after the foul ball. Ninth pitch of the at bat do next. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Huge strike out there. He’s locked in at the plate when he’s using the whole field. He was out in front there. Just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track. Good pitch for the strike out. Here’s Dylan Moore. And the first pitch misses for ball one. [Laughter] [Music] Get out of here. Two on, two outs. Nope. All right, Ranger. That misses the zone and that’s ball three. Well, they’re really running up the pitch count in this first inning. Lots of confidence from this team that is perhaps the hottest in baseball right now. Three 0 down. Right through there for a strike. First inning going a bit long. 23 pitches to this point. That one ripped and that is gone. His 11th of the year and they throw three on the board. It’s 3-2. You can’t ask for a better start than hitting a home run in your first at bat to give your team the lead. [Applause] Singy, I hope you saw it because it didn’t stay in the air for long. No, it didn’t. Boo. Statcast telling us 110 mph off the bat. And that’s plenty to hit one out if you get enough air under it. As a hitter, you hardly feel the ball when you make contact as solid as he did right there. And here is Kyle Higashioa. First pitch not close. Two out. Base is empty. That clips a corner. Just missed. That’s off the mark. And that’s ball three. [Music] And that is out of play. [Music] Swing and a ground ball and that one gets through into center field. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Fatty seven catcher and here’s the catcher Jonah that’s in there and it’s 0 and one. Well, with this many pitches thrown here in this first inning, I mean, you’re giving the other team a really good look. He’s going to have to find a way to get some weak contact, maybe a swing and miss, get into that dugout, and hit the reset button. The 01. He swings and fouls one off. Hot shot to first base and he snags it to end the inning. But the biggest swing of the inning comes right here. A three-run homer. It’s now a 32 ball game. You’re dialed into the show. And we’re back. Top of the second up now for Milwaukee number 21. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively but runs pretty well. So when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. Rangers. And I think that skill set really upgrades the position because when you have that kind of speed, it makes the whole team that much better. Fast ball for a strike. What about him playing another position on defense, one that would require a little more range? Absolutely. And I think if push came to shove where they had to make a a move during a game, it’d surprise a lot of people. You might even be able to put him in center field. That one missed. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. That one misses. So a lead off walk. What a battle. It’s not always easy laying off a 3-2 pitch. And I tell you what, he earned that walk. Next for the Brewers, S Freelick. And that misses. And that’s ball one. and that’s in for a strike. Mike Filmore, our played umpire, very consistent with his zone. Chris, gets a lot of praise for that. He does, Boo. And I think that with any umpire, you really just want them to be consistent. Fillmore’s a guy that does a good job back there in that way. So people around the league really appreciate his consistency. Latz checks over to first and he’s back. Ball to strike the pitch. Slider misses outside. Rangers. Next offering upstairs. Chris with that distraction and the speedy guy at first. He’s in a favorable hitter’s count. Well, if nothing else, I mean, this is a great spot for a hitter to be in. [Applause] That’s a good at bat right there. He was down early in that plate appearance. Works the walk. Well, interesting. He went with the off speed and walked the hitter. Man, you got to challenge the guy with the fast ball. Blake Perkins in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. Boo. Here’s a guy at the plate and I’m expecting to have a good game. He always seems to play better in road games. No outs, runners at first and second. Next pitch downstairs. Two balls, no strikes. Good spot for the hitter. Definitely has the advantage in this count with runners on. Look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch. Swang in a line drive. Base hit it to left field. Rounds third headed for the plate. He’ll score and they’ve tied it. Coming around third is Freighing. Tag and he’s out at the plate. The base runner did a great job of making that a close play at the plate with an excellent slide. Made the catcher work to get out there and put down the tag. The throw was on the money and that’s what made the difference. Big time play to cut down a run. [Applause] So the go-ahehead run in scoring position. Joseph Ortiz the next to hit and the pitch is outside. Ball one man at second. Oh, that’s out. Line drive caught. Throw behind the runner. They’ve got him doubled off, but they push across one run. One hit, no errors, no one left. We go to the bottom of inning number two. All tied up at three apiece. Ready to go for the last half of the inning. Here’s the center fielder, Michael Helman. Michael Helman Kintana back to work. Tap foul at the plate. Rangers, let’s go Texas. Yeah, that’s fouled off. pitch misses. Going to count one and two. That one missing inside. Really good take especially with two strikes. And that one is in the dirt and it’s a full cow. [Music] Swing and a highf fly ball right field. That one back. That one on its way and it’s gone. That’s worth the price of admission. his second homer of this series. And they jump out front. It’s 4-3. Boo. His plan was to hit the ball hard and he was going to figure out the rest later. You can’t argue with those results. [Applause] That one was a hanger. And pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there, he made him pay. [Applause] And the batter will be the shortstop. Ezekiel Duran. That one’s in there. Going on one. Oh, you just got to delete it. You give up that leadoff home run. Go back to work. Focus on this next batter. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. Bottom half of inning number two. line drive leads and he’s got it. That at bat is a positive sign even though it probably doesn’t feel like it. He hit the ball hard but it doesn’t always work out in your favor. Sometimes a defender is there to make a play. Back to the top of the lineup. Wyatt Langford stepping in for the Rangers. slashes this one and it could be trouble. Now he’ll turn for second and that’s a two bagger. [Applause] Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. [Applause] One out, runner at second. Cody Freeman stepping in for the Rangers. Throw to second. save. [Applause] And that’s downstairs. And that’s ball one. One out and a runner at second. And that’s in there for a strike. And now it’s even. [Music] That’s a little bit low. Looks like he’s being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up. Doesn’t want to make another mistake. That one fouled off. Two and two. Swinging a ground ball. Throw to first in time. Yeah, come on. Really? Now batting third baseman Josh Josh Young now at the plate walked his first time. Take it high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. This ball’s chopped on the ground. In time, Devon. That ends the inning and they limit the damage. Rangers pick up a run here on the solo home run. It’s now a 43 ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. New inning getting started. Leading off, Bryce Terang. Rangers fouled off left side. All right, Rangers. That’s line to left. One down. Now that designated Jackson Chorio up now for the Brewers. 0 for one. He struck out swinging last time. First pitch misses. Chorio in his second season batting second in today’s lineup. And he’s usually in the outfield. Today he’s the DH. And another ball. One out. Base is empty. There’s a strike. [Applause] Next offering misses and now three balls and a strike. [Music] Ripped to third. And that quickly two away. This is important. If he can go one, two, three here will be a very positive sign for him and for his team. The batter now, William Contrarus. He’s already homered in this game. And first off is fouled off. in the air left field down the line and that’ll fall for a base hit. Joey gets on base and keeps it going. Yelli stepping into the box now. Flyed to right his first time and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. [Applause] That misses one ball, one strike. Tying run is at first. We’re here in the top half of inning number three. Oh, he doesn’t get the call and it’s two and two. And that’s a pitch early in this game. He needs called for a strike. Struggling with commanding a swing and a miss that retires the side and that’ll do it. No runs, one hit, no errors, and a man left. We move on to the bottom of inning number three. It’s the Rangers four and the Brewers three. Set for the bottom of the third. And now the first baseman, Jake Ber. Jake Burgerer. Yeah, the first offering is not close. I think this is an important inning on the mound for him in this game. He’s got to find a way to settle things down and give some length in this start. The lefty the one. Well, these Rangers doing a good job of simply getting the bat on the ball in this game and the numbers back that up. They’re hitting everything thrown at them. Their contact rate is in the low 90s. It’s like they know what’s coming. And that’s just pretty ridiculous what they’re doing right now. Those numbers are well above the major league average. That catches the corner. In for a strike. Now it’s three and two. two strikes to a guy who’s already 0 for one with a punch out. The only guy in the lineup with that strike out, but you can’t get too relaxed. You still got to make good pitches to get him out. [Music] And a foul ball. He stays alive. That one is absolutely belted. Trey Link ranging bat and that one is gone. They’ll circle the bases. Home run number 15 on the year and they tack one on the board. It’s 53. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. They’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Opposite field home run and it’s a warm night for sure. Ball’s not being slowed as it gets up in the air to the outfield. So that had no problem getting out of here. Really nice show of power going the other way. Moore takes a ball as he stands in for the second time. Always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning. Kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning. Kintana maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run, Chris. Yeah, it seems that way. You know, guys, they can come out, feel good, but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch. They’re not trusting their stuff. Well, he’s been good for the most part. Is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit? Well, partner, every pitcher is a little different. I I liken it to you. Sometimes you come in and you’re not as focused, and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track, and then you have a great show. Uh, so perhaps it’s the same with him. Nobody really wants their rhythm broken up, but sometimes they need a little pickme up. Good hard fast ball up in the zone right there. They look really good coming in, but so hard to get on top of as a hitter. One out, base is empty, and a run in here in the last half of the third. Next offering is fouled back. Pitch is in the dirt and the count is two and two. Check swing on the 2-2. Appeal to first. Didn’t go. One down, base is empty. Draws the walk there. Man, that’s a tough one to take on the full count, but I guess he saw it really well. It’s a really nice plate appearance. So, digging in, Jonah. He’s 0 for one. And that’s outside. Ball one. Activity in the bullpen for the Brewers. Grant Anderson up and loosening in the pen. Kanik warming up as well. Runner on the go. Swing and a ground ball. Base hit right field. The throw in and the throw’s offline. Safe at third. I don’t know how he’s able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it. That pitch was inside and he let it get really deep. So, pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it. Runners at the corners here. One away. Up next for the Rangers, Michael Helman. And that drops in for a strike. Well, Chris, through the early stages, he hasn’t been very efficient in terms of the pitch count. He’s going to need to get some quick outs if he’s going to get deeper into this game. Higashioa, the runner at third. Heim over at first with one away. Foul ball there. It is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now. Doesn’t even matter that much if your starter doesn’t go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens. [Music] Two on, one out towards right center field. Perkins makes the catch. Runner tags from third. The throws offline. He’s saved. It’s six to three. There you go. Nice little RBI there. It’s a great at bat. Got the job done. Ezekiel Durant will hit next. 0 for one so far. Durant. When you’re struggling out there on the mound, hitters know that there’ll be plenty of opportunities within the at bat to try to get something to hit hard. Two outs. That’s a base hit. They stopped the lead runner at second. Now two on with two outs. He was all over that one. He really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing. Foul. One thing that was great about the approach, his head was down all the way through the pitch. And that’s how you do it. And here comes the Brewers manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. Jose Kintana will depart. And this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. Grant Anderson gets handed the rock out of the pen. Well, he’s been a really tough guy to take deep this season. You usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him. So, the lineup flips over. Here’s the left fielder, Wyatt Langford. So clutch, you could argue that he’s been this team’s MVP this year. Worm Burner into the outfield for a knock coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate. It’s offline. The run comes in. It’s seven to three. Back-to-back singles. Really nice job staying up the middle with his approach. He didn’t try to do too much with the pitch. Just shot it through the infield. First and second, two outs. Next up for Texas, Cody Freeman. One for two. Fought off foul. Two on, two outs. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. That one outside and it’s one and two. Battling here as he fouls it away. Two on, two outs. That misses. Two balls, two strikes. Got him looking. And that’ll keep more runs from coming in. Inning over. So they get three runs on four hits. One was the solo homer. On to inning number four. It’s the Rangers seven and the Brewers three back at Globe Life Field as we go to the top of the fourth. Andrew Vaughn now the number three overall pick out of Cal for the White Socks in 2019. Squang and a high-fly ball well struck. Langford going back on this one. makes the catch up against the wall. Now batting third base. Now the third baseman. He reached out to walk his first time. Slice down the right side. Let’s go Rangers. And that drops in for a strike. Base is empty, one away. Top half of inning number four. Swaying and a ball lifted in the air. Freeman coming on. No trouble here. Puts it away for the out. Two away. Right S. Freelick. Next for Milwaukee. S Freelick worked a walk in his first trip to the plate. Let’s go. Fast ball for a strike [Music] and that skips in the dirt. Next pitch is outside. [Music] Rangers. And that’s in the dirt. First pitch strike from the pitcher, but then no panic at all by the hitter. Very patient, showing good discipline. Now he’s in the driver’s seat with a 3-1 count. And that’s too high. Ball four. One of the things about that two out walk, the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead. So, a ball down the line or into the gap will produce a two out RBI. And those are the best. That is if you are the offensive side of it. Taking over on the mount for the Rangers, number 57. And he’s got a nice lead to work with, so he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. So, a man aboard and now here’s a speed threat outfielder Blake Perkins. He doubled home a run in his first AB. That one finds the corner. 0 and one. Action in the pen down there. Jack Lighter appears to be getting loose. Edwards also getting ready. And it’s fouled away. Freelick off of first with two away. Come on, Rangers. And that one is popped in the air. Shallow center and it falls. Lead runner gets the stop sign at third. It’s a two out double. second and third now down in the count battling to stay alive and just a nice job to put it in play. These days most outfielders play pretty deep and I’m not sure if that was a factor there or not but off the bat you’re thinking it’s going to be a pop out and it just kind of nestled into that spot where no one was able to get to it. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. Ortiz in the box now. No balls in a strike. Two outs. And a foul ball. Come on, Rangers. Let’s go Texas. Little trouble with this one behind the plate. Nothing happening on the bases, though. Two on, two outs. Good job to fight that one off. Ouch. He had two strikes on him and he hit him. Up next for Milwaukee. Back to the top of the Milwaukee order. Here’s the second baseman. Bryce Terang singled and scored back in the first. He’s one for two. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. Come on, let’s kill this inning. And he hits a ground ball right side and it goes just foul. Here’s the O2. Fast ball is outside. This one is blasted. A no doubter. Grand slam. His 18th home run of the season. And we are starting over. It’s 77. That one just sounded different. And it might have been the loudest moment yet. Man, my ears are ringing. I could feel that swing from the booth. Chris, that ball came out hot. So, let’s see what Stackcast has to say. Yeah, it really did. Boog. 111 miles per hour off the bat and a really nice launch angle as well. Just a beautiful swing from start to finish. So, it’s all tied up thanks to the home run. Jackson Torio up now for the Brewers. That one finds the zone. Strike one. Well, it’s easy to be satisfied and get a little distracted after a grand slam, but there’s still a lot of work in this inning to do and you can really deliver a knockout blow. Swing and a highf fly ball. Pretty well struck right field. Ranging back and caught on the warning track, but they leave their mark on the inning as we get another look at the grand slam. And we’re deadlocked here at 77. Bottom of the fourth. Here’s the third base. Josh Young. Josh Young. And that one clips the corner. The one is outside and it’s a ball and a strike. Just missed. One strike. There’s the swing going to miss. Two strike. I can’t [Music] go. Strike three. Got him with the sweeper. And now it’s Jake Burgerer to hit. He’s already homerred here in this one. Jake Burgerer. started to swing. Held up and another ball. He’s clearly trying to work him away here. Both pitches off the plate. If you really want to put the ball in play, you’re going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field. Next offering is in for a strike. Man, this guy’s got a great feel for his breaking ball today. Little chopper rolls foul. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. High in the air out to right. Freeland makes the grab. Two away now. Up next for the Rangers, second base. Now it’s the second base, Dylan Board. They’ve been so good about responding when the other team scores, coming back in the next half inning and putting something on the board themselves. And that one fouled off. Two down, nobody on. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. pulls that one foul. Good eye in that spot. Too close for me partner to take that O2 fast ball, but for whatever reasons he let it go by. He’s still in the at bat. I don’t think he’ll let the next one go. Oh, that kicked out. [Music] Comebacker to the mound. They’ll throw to first. Third out and that ends the frame. Nothing doing for the Rangers. Still tied 77. Back in Arlington, all set for the start of the inning. And now the catcher comes up to him. William Contreres. That one misses. And that is ball one. Well, these Brewers putting together some really good at bats in this game. There’s been a lot to like with how they’re approaching their chances at the plate. It looked to me like they really wanted to get to the starter early, get him out of the game before he settles in. So, I’d say mission accomplished. Check swing and he went and it’s two and one. And that one missing low. Three balls, one strike. All right, Rangers started at the 3-1. Now a check and down to first we go. And he held up. His ability to draw walks has been something that’s been part of his career since day one. And the Rangers manager making his way towards the mound now as he will make the move. Number 57 gives way and it’s a tie ball game as he heads for the dugout. back with a new arm after a quick break. Jack Lighter will take over here. Well, he’s been a bit of a wild card out there in terms of throwing strikes. He’s definitely struggled with free passes this year. Go ahead run on base. Yell digs in now. Both for two in this one. And there’s a strike. Good heater at 98. And I know you want to be patient as a hitter, but you got to be ready to jump on the first thing straight. And he got one right there, but left the bat on his shoulder. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. One gone here. Andrew Vaughn the next to hit definitely wants to stay out of the double play here. Ball on the ground in the infield. Should be an inning ending double play. First offering and it just misses. Swinging a foul back that’s out of play. Contrarus the runner at first with one gone in the inning. The kick and the pitch. Runner goes out to short. Whips it across. No chance at the double play with the runner in motion. Now back then, third baseman Caleb Durban. So, the go-ahead run in scoring position. Now, the third baseman, he’s someone that you might not describe as having elite level speed, but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game. Fast ball is outside. Boo. This guy’s definitely a plus runner, but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time. Never takes a break. It’s guys like that, even though they don’t have the Next offering popped in the air right field. It’s going to fall for a hit. Here comes the throw. Safe at home and the runner scores from second. 87. They take the lead. Well, they didn’t get much of that one, but it’s going to look like a line drive in the box score tomorrow. There are a lot of nicknames people have attached to hits like that. Blooper, flare, ducks, snort, lawn dart, etc. But whatever you want to call it, it’s a knock. And those are the ones that’ll make you smile as a hitter just about every time. And now here is Sal Freelick. He takes it himself to the bag and that’ll do it. But they pick up one run on the RBI single and this is now an 87 ball game. Back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound, Quinn Pester. And this is an important part of this game. Tight score and still a lot of outs to get. So they’re looking for a big outing out of him right here to get some critical outs. Now here’s the Rangers DH Kyle Higashioa. He’s a catcher by trade, but the DH here in this one. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. The guy at the plate could recognize slider out of the hand. Didn’t stay in the tunnel very long in terms of depth and perception. and he knew right away it was an off speed pitch inside just missed right now behind in the count two balls and no strikes. No free passes. You can’t allow that. And now two and one. Nasty two slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. Next offering is in for a strike. [Music] Ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. So, a man on base to start the inning. Well, that may end up being an at bat we go back to later on when this game is over. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. No outs. Runner at first. Jonah stepping in for the Rangers. Hit hard but foul off to the left. [Music] Come on. Let’s go. Nope. One. One ball. One strike. Rangers. Runner on the go on a line and off the base of the wall. And now runners at the corners. Nobody out. Well, a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle. We saw the numbers coming into the ball game, but all he’s trying to do at this point is help his team win. Michael Helman stepping in for the Rangers. Pitch misses. Ball one. on the ground right side. That’s a base hit in from third is the tying run. It’s an RBI single. It’s eight apiece. Gets it done to drive in the run and tie it back up. Not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play. That’s a team at bat right there. Nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep. Ezekiel Durant now at the plate. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. And he takes a strike. Traffic on the bases with one already in last half of inning number five. And a big swing and a miss. Sometimes being lucky is a swing and miss. If he makes contact with that pitch, probably hits into a double play. [Applause] Lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. Perkins sizing this one up. makes the grab and there’s one down. Now batting left fielder Wyatt Langford. Now the left fielder Wyatt Langford. We just might be talking about this at bat in our postgame rap. He’s proven he can drive in runs in these spots. He’s been such a good hitter with runners in scoring position. Some guys just take it to another level. for him right now at the plate. It’s like everyone else is in slow motion and he’s in full speed. And that’s through there for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Really good job in this spot to get ahead in the count. He’s going to have to continue finish off this hitter. Swing and a highfly ball. That one out towards left center field way back there. Forget it. He’ll touch them all. His 22nd homer of the year. It’s 118. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop. And they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one, Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. A good hitter gets pitch recognition early. He saw exactly where that was going to be. The challenge, not get over anxious and come out of your swing. He stayed on it and got all of it. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. Quinn Pster departs. It’s a three-run game and we’ll be back to tell you about the new arm in a minute. [Applause] Here comes the new arm for the Brewers, Jacob Miserowski. And he’s been really shutting down hitters from the right side of the plate this year. Not a lot of hard contact, not a lot of hits, period. [Music] One down. Now it’s the right fielder Cody Freeman. One for three. outside low and it’s one and0. Oh, come on. Let’s go. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. So next to hit for Texas, Josh Young. Swings and blasts one deep to left center. And that’s going to bang against the wall. coming home. He’ll score. These guys today are so great with handling velocity. They’re seen high speeds day after day and a nice job of turning that one around. [Applause] So up next, Jake Burgerer. [Applause] that one in triple digits. Hitter’s got some good opposite field power. What I like about something being hit to the right side into the outfield is that the base runner at second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit. Swing and a miss at 100 miles an hour. man at second and that just misses. Well, that’s kind of what you expect in an 02 count. Excellent job of the hitter to have the plate disciplined to lay off of that pitch. Sets him down looking. That was pretty nasty. Just locked him up right there for the second out. And that’s an at bat he’s probably going to be thinking about for a little while. didn’t pull the trigger. Not how you want to go down in an RBI spot. So now you got to hope your teammate behind you can pick you up. Up next for the Rangers, Dylan Moore. And first offering is fouled off. Two outs and one in scoring position. And ball one. That one finds the zone. And that is strike two. That front door slider is such a devastating pitch. You don’t want to get beat by the inside fast ball. So, you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there, it’s out of the swing plane. Man on second, two down. Breaking ball misses down and away. swing and a fly ball in the air out towards right center field and he makes the catch and that will end the inning. But nine batters hit in the inning, five come around to score. Five innings complete. It’s the Rangers 12 and the Brewers eight. And we’re back. Start of the six. John Shami with Chris Singleton and leading off Blake Perkins Rangers Rangers. Lighter back to work. Popped up more and there’s one down. That was a good hard fast ball with some nice ride up in the zone right there. Hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end just beat him. Instead of a line drive or something hit deep, it’s a pop up and an easy out for the defense. Ortiz in the box again, takes the strike. All the count and a foul ball. One ball, two strength. The Brewers down by four and we’re the top half of the sixth headed towards the corner and that’s a foul ball. You can see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the offspe pitch but just a little tardy on the fast ball swing and a miss. Struck him out and there’s two down. Well, classic pitch sequencing there to change eye levels for the punch out. That fast ball on the pitch before was up. It was very competitive and that gets you thinking that he might try to climb the ladder. But then the curveball out of that same tunnel just falls off the table and you can’t make contact. So the batting order turns over and stepping in is the speedy Bryce Terra in the first pitch misses for ball one. Terraang measures 6 feet even 25 years old. A former first round pick back in 2018 and the one. That one pushed foul out of play off to the left. Well, he got challenged with a good fast ball right there. Just couldn’t catch up. Highf fly ball on that one. Curling foul down the right side. And that one got a piece of him. He had him one, two, and he ends up hitting him with a pitch. Jackson Chorio up now for the Brewers. 0 for three in this one. Swing and a miss. Chased it out of the zone. Wow. No fair right there. I mean, that slider didn’t move till the very last moment. Incredibly difficult to pick that up. Just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch. [Music] And that one is lifted in the air. Freeman sizes this one up. He’s got it. And that’ll do it. Brewers strand one. They trail by four. It’s 128. And welcome back to the ballpark. Bottom of the sixth inning. Now here’s the Rangers. DH Kyle Hagashio. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Well, these Rangers digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they’re taking. It’s been a real team effort already. Seven extra base hits. soul. That goes to show they’re getting contributions from top to bottom. Nobody’s doing that by themselves. Come on, Texas. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Well, clearly just anxious right there and understandably so. In an 02 count, you feel like you’ve got a lot of plate to cover and you don’t want to strike out and you end up striking out. That’s just one of those pitches where it’s not over the plate, but because you committed to it as it was leaving his hand, by the time you realized it wasn’t going to be in the zone, it’s too late to hold up your swing. He batting with one down, takes the strike, love how vocal the umpire is today. No doubt in the hitter’s mind, the catcher’s mind, and even the pitcher’s mind as to the conviction in the call. One down, base is empty. Fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two. Come on, Rangers. Just missed. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Rangers. Strike three. And that’s two in a row. Well, Boo, I’ll tell you when he goes to look at the video of that pitch, he’s going to want to punch himself. That slider had hit me written all over it and clearly he just got a little too excited and was out in front. Tell you what, when you get a pitch like that, you cannot miss it. Those have a chance to go a long way. And now the center fielder, Michael Helman. He launched the solo shot back in the second inning of this one. Yeah, that was big for these guys early on. Definitely helped them get off onto the right foot. pitch misses and that’s ball one. That was absolute gas. Triple digits on the gun. It’s just a different experience as a hitter watching that go by. Two down. Nobody on and there’s a foul ball. Come on. Two down, nobody on here in the bottom of the sixth. Started after the one-two pitch. Chappil to first and he went around. Not an easy call there, but that puts an end to the inning. Impeccable command in that one. Three batters, three strikeouts. That’s electric stuff out there on the mound. leading off. Here’s the catcher, William Contras. And it was a homer back in the first inning that got his day started at the plate. Yeah, Boo. A two-run blast. And that swing will give him confidence the rest of the way. First pitch misses and that’s in there at the knees. In this situation, you expect the batters to be a little more patient, possibly take until they get a strike. With that, you don’t want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count. He didn’t right there. up the middle. Moore and the lead off intercept down to open the seventh. Now batting left fielder Christian Yelich. And now it’ll be Christian Yelich 0 for three with two strikeouts and a fly out. Rangers. Swing and a highf fly ball to left. Langford should have this one. Drops into the glove and a couple of quick outs. Now batting first base Andrew Vaughn up now for the Brewers. Rangers. Right through there for a strike. The Rangers leading by four. here in the top half of inning number seven. Pop foul out of play off to the right. Let’s go. Come on. Not close with that one. And the count is one and two. Rarely will you see a pitcher just to waste a pitch like that. The batter wasn’t even tempted to swing. Every pitch needs to have a purpose so that it can set up a following pitch to help you get that out. All right, here we go. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. One and two here. Smoked on the ground to second. Throws to first in time. That’s out number three. [Music] We’re back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh. Yoel Pyam. And we all know about his slider. It’s just filthy, man. and one of the better ones in the game, I’d say. Spin rate’s very high and it just breaks a ton. Now it’s the shortstop. Ezekiel Duran Sing, you talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays. Yeah, the first offering a fast ball for a strike. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond and still get a pretty good runner. That’s impressive. In time, Devon, one up, one down. Now batting left fielder Wyatt Langford. Here’s the left fielder, Wyatt Langford. Certainly a factor in this one thanks to his three-run blast back in the fifth. Well, definitely one of the most impactful swings of the game. A big reason why they’re working with the lead and looking to add to it right here. Boo. There’s the strike. 95 of that one. Base is empty. One away here in the bottom of the seventh. Come on, Rangers. Swag a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. Let’s go. That’s out. Outside low. The countdown two and two. goes down swinging for the strikeout. Chase the fast ball up the ladder for strike three. Boogie just ran out of patience there. He took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes, but that time chased outside the zone. Rangers Freeman in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike. on the corner for a strike and it’s 0 and two. Gosh. Slider down and in from a same side thrower. There’s really nothing you could do with that pitch. Just tip your cap. Off the mark there now. One and two. O2 fastball way out of the zone. I think he’s trying to speed him up. Got to stay back. Off speed’s probably coming. And a swing and a miss. Down on strikes and it’s a three up, three down inning. So they make short work of them there. Eighth inning coming up. It’s the Rangers 12 and the Brewers eight. Welcome back and a new arm on the mound to start the eighth. Carl Edwards Jr. This is his third time out this year for the Rangers. Number 52, Carl Edwards Jun. Here’s the third baseman. The Brewers in striking distance but have some work to do. Boo. It starts with the laidoff man. I need a good at bat out of him right here. And first offering is fouled off [Music] and there’s a ball. You’re killing me. Good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone. the 1-1 and that is out of play. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Freeman squeezes it and there’s one down. Now batting right fielder Sal Felick up now for Milwaukee. Sal Felick Chris baseball today so many strikeouts and they are available to pitchers but this is a guy that puts the bat on the ball and is kind of different from the players that we see day in day out. The Brewers down by four and we’re in the top of the eighth. That one misses and one and one. Yeah, his swing is so good. It’s in the zone a long time. He gets the barrel to it a lot and that produces more base hits and that skips in the dirt. Singy, one of the things that’s interesting is that guys really don’t worry about swing and miss from an offensive standpoint anymore. So, when you see somebody who contacts the ball like this, do you think of that as plus value? Absolutely. if he’s doing damage now, if he’s rolling over and and grounding out, then it’s a different story. But yeah, if he can put the ball in the gaps or over the fence, 100%. Fouled off again and it remains three and two. On the ground to first takes it to the bag, steps on first and it’s out number two. Up next for Milwaukee, center fielder Blake Perkins. Two out, space is empty. Digging in is the switch in outfielder Blake Perkins. Missed inside with the curve. Next one misses. And that’s ball two. And another ball. And there’s the automatic. [Applause] And a strike. [Music] Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Three and two. Payoff pitch keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. cut on and lifted in the air and it drops in. He saw a lot of pitches in that at bat and found a way to win the battle. Hey, whatever works, right? Doesn’t have to be impressive. He didn’t exactly connect with this one as he met it out front, but he still put a decent enough swing on it to get it into the outfield, you know, and if you finish the swing and just extend your follow through, you’re going to run into Knox just like that. Now a chance for Joseph Ortiz in plenty of time to first and that’s the third out. So one hit is all they get. Home half of inning number eight straight ahead. It’s the Rangers 12 and the Brewers eight. Back in Arlington now it’s going to be Josh Young [Music] to the right side. Terra handles throws to first and a quick out number one. Now batting first base Jake Ber. Next to bat will be the Texas cleanup hitter Jake Ber. Get another one. And he grounds one to the right side. He steps on the bag. Two up, two down. Now batting second base, Dylan Moore. Two down, base is empty. Dylan Moore getting ready to hit. Rangers. swings through that one. 0 and one. Two down, nobody on. You’re in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Next offering is fouled back. I wouldn’t say the game’s close right now, but it’s not out of reach either. I mean, these pitchers really need to put up a zero on the board just to maintain a little hope. That one back up the middle and it gets through and that extends the inning. Really nice job of two strike hitting in that at bat. He got that front foot down and pitch recognition was on point. Pretty impressive for an 02 count. Next it’ll be the Texas DH. Kyle Higashioa checks over to first back safely on the ground to third in time. Devon and that is that. One left for Texas, but they’re still up 128. Now pitching. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound. Obie Milner. He last pitched two days ago. Milner, this is Bryce Terang. His fourth inning grand slam looms large in this ball game, partner. I’ll say that was a special moment. Bases loaded, everyone in the stadium anticipating something big. Would it happen or not? And I tell you what, that grand slam for any major leager, that’s something to remember. That one pushed to the left and fouled. Milner goes 6′ 3 in 185 lbs. He joined the team as a free agent. Bunting for a hit and foul ball. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. It’s a good breaking ball there just off the corner where you can’t really do much damage, but it’s close enough to where you got to protect and he just couldn’t find a way to fight it off. Chorio in the box with one away as he takes ball one. Some activity in the bullpen for Texas. Robert Garcia, the young lefty, looks to be getting himself ready. M getting cranked up as well. One down, base is empty. Out in front with the swing and that is strike one. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Late on that fast ball. That’s too low. Two and two. That’s a ball. Went with the sweeper. Base is empty. One away. You’re in the top of the ninth. Foul ball and it remains a full count. This one popped up. Fouled ground first base side. Two down. Now batting catcher William Contras. [Applause] So it’s their last chance in this one. William Contras will hit next. Foul ball and a pop off right side. Foul territory and that’ll do it. Ball game. The Rangers slug their way to a win in this one. Got to say this was a wild and crazy game. I’m exhausted, man. 20 runs total, but it still ended up being a close game. So many twists and turns. There’s a lot to unpack from this one. A 128 final score in this one. For Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB The Show, I’m John Shami. Thanks for joining us.
