MLB Network | Buck Martinez BREAKDOWN AL-leading Blue Jays beat Orioles 11-2 to complete sweep

Again, you can watch the Yankees and Red Sox later tonight and not be overly concerned with the result because the magic number to make the postseason is five to clinch the division is 10. And let us take you downstairs. Ardanelling is with Ernie Clement. A relentless offensive onslaught for the Blue Jays today, including multiple hits from Ernie Clement. But I want to start on defense. When Nathan Lucas is laying out to make plays like that in a blowout, what’s it say about this team? That’s what we do. We play uh we play 27 outs. So, um you know, we’re grinding till the end for you. You’ve got your 30th double of the season here today. You got career highs across the board. How gratifying has this season been for you? Yeah, it’s great. I mean, I just want to win. That’s all I care about. Um I’m just going to keep doing that. That’s all we care about. On the mound today, Shane Bieber goes six. [Applause] Shane Bieber goes six one-run innings. Every day you’re playing behind a Sai Young winner, a Sai Young finalist. What’s that like for you as an infielder? I’m so happy for Shane. Uh, you know, I can tell how much joy it brings him to to be back out on the mound and um, you know, I played with him in Cleveland, so I’m just really really happy for him. He he seems like he’s in a great spot and um you know I I can’t stress enough I’m so happy for him. And not a day goes by that I don’t hear from one of your teammates about the togetherness of this team. How would you describe the chemistry you guys have right now in your clubhouse? Yeah, it’s special. It’s a huge reason why we’re uh in the position we are. So, you know, playing for each other, it goes a long way. All right. Thanks, Ernie. Take it easy. All righty. Ernie Clement and the Blue Jays sweep away the Baltimore Orioles. That’s 10 sweeps on the year. And that is certainly an indication that this team is awfully good as they head for Tampa Bay where they will take on the Rays beginning tomorrow with Trey Savage on the hill making his major league debut. We’ll address that in a minute. But let’s address the offense, too. And we’ve seen this throughout the season. Once this team collectively gets a chance against someone of inexperience, in this case Carson Ragsdale later in the ball game, they know how to pounce. Can you show us? I I don’t think to adjust to different pitching that they see throughout the ball game, whether you have veterans coming in out of the bullpen or you have some guys making their major league debuts, it’s all about the adjustments and how quickly this team can adjust to what the pitcher is trying to do to them. You see the conversations happening in the dugout. You see teammates looking at the iPads, constant conversations with the hitting coaches over there in the dugout preparing them for what they’re about to face. So that it almost feels like they have a game’s worth of at bats before even stepping into the batters box for the first time against a pitcher. And I think about the way that this is going to apply to this team once they of course get down the stretch of the regular season and into the postseason. How quickly can you make those adjustments when a new pitcher comes into the ball game? because sometimes it might only be that one pitch. You might only have that one opportunity to capitalize and you want to make sure that you’re ready whenever that moment does come up. Now, unless you’re Kevin Gosman and you’re going to go out there and throw a complete game shut out, for the most part, you’re seeing a variety of different pitches from the opponent. But how can you, no matter if you’re in the game starting or if you’re coming in off of the bench, still be able to have an impactful and productive at bat? Plus, the energy that you’re seeing from this team top to bottom is just unbelievable. Well, and sometimes too, it’s not the hardest hit balls that are out there in the field, but you’re finding a way to just put the ball in play trying to make something happen. And all of that goes along with the fact that this is a team that really doesn’t strike out a lot. They’re going to put the ball in play. They’re going to put pressure on the defense. And we saw that on full display today. Whether it was a couple of infield base hits, stringing together those quality at bats or some balls hit out of the gap or even leaving the yard, you saw a combination of this offense today. When the American League most valuable player award is handed out at the end of the season, one would think that George Springer will get some votes based on the year that he is having hitting over 300, home run number 29 today. And consider that on Friday when the Blue Jays are in Kansas City, he’s going to turn 36 years of age. So, here are the players in franchise history, 35 and older, who have had seasons similar to what Springer is doing. Joe Carter, Dave Winfield, and Frank Thomas. The year he ended up with 500 career as a member of the Blue Jays. He’s been the Renaissance man this year, and I think a lot of people are surprised by it. no longer obviously, but when he came out of spring training with something like a 190 batting average, people are wondering, might he be near the end of his effectiveness and he’s gone way overboard in saying, “I’m not close.” Yeah. The complete opposite. And you see him come out here and still put together some really good at bats. And to me, when I watch his swing, I think it’s one of the more unique swings that you see on this Blue Jays offense, just with the way that he almost tips his barrel practically back behind him. Now, that’s one of the reason why he gets so many of those catchers interference calls. But also, if I’m a pitcher and I see George Springer swing, I might try to throw pitches on the inner half. Well, one, he’s got a great eye for pitches on the inside part of the plate, even if the calls don’t go his way. You know what? He’s going to stand in the batters box. He’s going to get another pitch, and he can make you pay if you make a mistake. Look at where that location was. Up and inside, and he’s able to handle it. Next step, Matt, he comes up in the bottom of the seven, still facing Ragsdale. He gets a splitter that he comes around and pulls to the left side. It’s the power to all fields. You saw him drive the ball for a double to the right side of the field, hitting the home run out to left and then he gets an off speed pitch that he’s able to adjust to early in the count and still hit it with authority out to left field. Those are the types of things, those are the types of swings that we have seen from George Springer all year long. And even though there might be some at bats where he doesn’t necessarily get the result, you know that he is going to swing as hard as he possibly can because he goes down to a knee sometimes with those swings and misses. But those types of energetic swings from him, I I also think are very contagious going throughout the lineup, whether it’s a base hit or if it’s him going back into the dugout, passing along that information. He is such a key piece to this team. And a great reminder too, Buck mentioned it on the broadcast that he didn’t start off this season in that leadoff spot, but he has earned it with the way that he’s performed and thrived back in that leadoff position. 20 years ago when Roy Holidayiday was pitching here, there was a point where as he was working, he put you at ease knowing it’s unlikely that the opposing team’s going to score more than two or three runs maximum. You might be getting that feeling when you watch Shane Bieber, too, who made his fifth start today. And at no time did he look like he was frazzled by this Orioles lineup. The the feeling that you’re talking about and what gives me that feeling of almost a sense of control when he’s out there on the mound is the fact that he’s not giving up those free passes. When you look at the five games that he started so far this season for the Blue Jays, he has just walked two batters. So that is just two batters that are reaching on base via the free pass. What that tells me is that he’s getting ahead of batters. He’s throwing strikes early. And yes, maybe sometimes they’re able to capitalize and hit the ball hard. There was one mistake that he made throughout today’s ball game. But also, he has that veteran presence on the mount. He’s going to continue to make adjustments depending upon what the opponent’s trying to do against him. Maybe they’re leaning on one side of the plate or maybe they’re trying to go up there and go after his breaking ball. He’s going to notice those types of things and he’s going to adjust throughout the ball game. But again, it comes down to limiting those walks and making sure that you’re letting your defense work behind you, too. I think that’s an unsung hero of today’s ball game. Of course, you’re going to look at the score and you’re going to look right to the offense, but the defense made some incredible plays. Even the diving play by Nathan Lucas out there in right field. We saw Ernie Clement make some really nice plays and some big double plays that were turned back behind him. And all that goes into him trusting his defense and knowing he doesn’t have to strike everybody out, but he can trust the defense behind him to make those plays. Lucas diving to make a catch in an 11 to2 game. He made a couple of those catches in that series, too. That was quite something. This game was called of course by Dan Schman and Buck Martinez who join us from the broadcast booth. It’s been a long season, so many ups, a few downs for the Blue Jays, mostly ups of course. They lost two out of three to the Yankees. Bo Bashette injured, tension, stress, standings, they come home and without Bette go five and one on the home stand and have put themselves in such a good spot in the standings. Well, they sure have. And you know what? This team believes in one another and they always play hard right to the end. You saw that in great example is Nathan Lucas diving catch in the ninth inning in 11-2 ball game. The biggest thing about this team is all they are concerned about is winning the game. Nobody’s concerned about their individual numbers. And you’ve had some great performances from George Springer. He’s having a career season. Springer has never hit 300 in his life. This is the best season he’s had since 2019. He’s scored three runs today. He scored 100 runs for the fourth time in his career. And he’s playing like he’s 25. Now you got Vlatty and hopefully he’ll get Bo back. But all of the role players have been such an important part of this team and we can’t forget about the starting pitching. Shane Bieber has had five starts for the Blue Jays. He’s pitched at least five innings in each of those five starts. And with Gossman pitching so well, Basset throwing the ball well, Max Sher and Shane Bieber and Jose Bereos, the Blue Jays have an embarrassment of riches in the starting rotation. They held the Orioles to six runs in the three games. And Monday night when they open the series in Tampa, more excitement. It’ll be the major league debut of Treya Savage. That it will, Dan. He got the phone call yesterday at about 2 Eastern time and said, “Would you please get to Toronto because on Monday night you’re making your major league debut, the Blue Jays first round pick from the 2024 draft.” Here’s how he feels about making it to the major leagues.

  1. I wish you guys would get rid of the Blue Jay symbol when a person is trying to watch the show. We are fans of this team and we do not need to see the symbol of the Blue Jays because as a senior citizen it is disturbing to look at.
