Phillies punch Postseason ticket, Pete Alonso shakes up Queens! | Morning Lineup (MLB Daily Recap)
By Astoria up. The middle peace head comes, go from mlb.com. This is the morning Lineup podcast. I’m your host, Mandy Bell. Today is Monday, September 15th and two teams have officially punched their tickets to the 2025 playoffs. We’ll cover that the end to a painfully long losing streak, the longest homer of the season and an updated look at the wild card races and everything else in between. Of course, we’ll do it all in under 10 minutes. Let’s get to it. The Brewers became the first team in 2025 to clinch a postseason spot on Saturday and of course, they did it in the most epic Brewers way possible. And the two, two and a liner into right center field, it’s going to get down for a base hit around third is Durbin. Here comes the throw home. Durban slides in there safely. The Brewers. Ok. So they had technically already clinched their playoff berth because of a Mets loss earlier in the night. But come on. Who wants to clinch on a day when you lose? This made it way more fun to celebrate down 6 to 2 entering the bottom of the eighth. Milwaukee started scrapping runs together. A sacrifice fly, a run scoring ground out to cut the score to 6 to 4. And after the Cardinals scored one more in the ninth, an RB I double by Sal Frelick and RB I single by Jackson Chio and a game tying infield single by William Contreras pulled off the improbable and in extra innings , andrew Monasterio singled to create the perfect clinching night. This will be the seventh postseason appearance for the Brewers in the last eight seasons. It led to a special champagne toast that was made even more intimate when a letter by the late broadcaster, Bob Yer was handed to manager Pat Murphy. Howdy boys. Never a doubt you would get this invitation. He did it by believing, really miss you guys and I wish I was there. Things are good to God Almighty , picked me to be on his team up here. Uh, uh, albeit I’m the third catcher, it’s a great league. No day games after night games, no shadows, but you got all the sticky you need to have up here told the big guy about you guys play hard every night. You’re not afraid, you’re not afraid to play for each other. He’s obviously very interested in the group with this uncommon goodness and now a team that started the year on four with the worst run differential in the majors is the first to clinch its playoff spot and the first to reach 90 wins, even though the Brewers fell 3 to 2 to the Cardinals on Sunday, they can relax knowing that their spot in the playoffs is secured and if they can stay in the win column, they may just earn home field advantage for the entire postseason. The team competing with the Brewers, the most for that home field advantage is the Phillies who also clinched their postseason berth on Sunday with the Giants tend to two loss to the Dodgers. Philadelphia had a chance to clinch the division yesterday too, but because the Phillies lost, it was the Mets who prevented that for at least one more day and a much needed win for the Mets to say the least. They entered Sunday with an eight game losing streak back on September 5th. They had a 96.6% chance of making the playoffs according to fan graphs that dropped to 76.8% by the start of Sunday. Still more likely than not that they’re in the postseason. But far from that guarantee, they were once flirting with, they watched their comfortable five game lead in the NL wild card race get erased Saturday night. But thanks to a Giants loss, they were able to hold on to a half game advantage. Sunday had to turn things around. This was becoming as do or die of a situation as any team could imagine. That’s when the polar bear entered the chat, Alonso Dreis with a deep right field headed toward the wall. That ball is headed here an opposite field three run homer. The Mets could breathe a sigh of relief for a moment after the 5 to 2 extra innings win over the Rangers. But that breathing room is limited. They snapped an eight game losing streak but they haven’t clinched a thing just yet. They still have three teams on their tail. The Giants, the Diamondbacks and the Reds, the Giants lost to the Dodgers move them a game and a half behind the Mets. The Diamondbacks 6 to 4 win over the Twins moved them two games behind the Mets and the Reds 7 to 4 loss to the A’s on Sunday dropped them to 2.5 games back. So again, there is some breathing room but with two weeks still left in the regular season, anything can happen. Speaking of anything can happen , we saw the biggest blast of the year over the weekend more on that after the break. There is a reason nick Kurtz is undoubtedly the favorite to win the American League rookie of the year award this season. The average that’s floating right around 300 is great. The Ops that sits north of 1000 is better. The 30 plus homers in less than a full season is impressive. The WRC Plus that’s desperately trying to inch closer to 200 is ridiculous. It all makes sense. But when moments like this happen that captivate fan bases across the country like it did on Saturday, it only throws him into the spotlight even more. 22 to center field. Yes, that’s a stat cast projected 493 ft. If you take a second to think about that, that’s essentially equivalent to like a 45 story building. I mean, there’s no better way to describe it than what his teammate, Lawrence Butler said after the game. Quote, I think we’re gonna have to make up a new word for what he did to that ball. That was insane, unquote. This was the longest home run in major league baseball this season and not only was it the biggest loss of the year, it’s the longest homer since June 30th 2023 when shohei Otani also hit a 493 footer when he was still with the Angels and with another 7 to 4 victory over the Reds on Sunday that included another nick Kurtz Homer. The A’s certainly had themselves quite a weekend elsewhere around baseball since we already touched on the NL wild card race. Let’s check in on where the A L stands considering the Red Sox Astros Rangers and Guardians are all within three games of each other. The Red Sox beat the Yankees last night 6 to 4 but New York is still holding on to that top wild card spot. Then comes Boston with the second spot holding a one game lead over the Astros that brings us to the A L West. The last few days, the Astros and the Mariners have been tied for the top spot in the division. Whoever would be the first to finally lose a game would get the third wild card spot while the other would shift into being the division leader on Sunday. It finally happened. The Mariners defeated the Angels 11 to 2 to move atop the A L West while the Astros fell 8 to 3 to the Braves. Houston now holds a two game lead over the Rangers. Texas was on the losing end of the Mets 5 to 2 extra inning walk off. So they were unable to gain ground on the Astros but the Guardians beat the White Sox 3 to 2 to move themselves within 2.5 games of the Astros. Does your head hurt yet? The Royals thumped the Phillies 10 to 3 as Salvador Perez drove in five runs. The Tigers beat the Marlins two to nothing. But the better news was that their cy young starter, Tarik Skubal who removed himself from the game on Friday received good news that all of his results came back. Ok. And he’s on track to make his next start on Thursday. The Padres defeated the Rockies 9 to 6 but because the Dodgers also took down the Giants 10 to 2. San Diego remains 2.5 games behind L A in the NL West. It’s pure craziness this time of year and it really doesn’t get better than this, but I won’t cause your head to spin anymore.
