🔴LIVE 🔴San Diego Padres VS New York Mets/ September 15/ Baseball Envivo/MLB THE SHOW 25
way next. Just about set to go now. And today’s starting pitcher, David Peterson. And Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. And most guys, they get a little tight. They start to aim the baseball. But for some reason, he gets looser. The ball comes out of his hand with more life. And he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Ground ball right side, tosses to first, and a quick out number one. Let’s take a look at the Padres’s lineup. This has been a good, productive lineup so far this year. are currently ranking among the better teams in terms of total hits and runs per game. Well, you know, this lineup sees it as very important to put the ball in play. Boog, I mean, this is an age where strikeouts are up so high and guys are swinging and missing going for the fences, but if you can increase that contact rate, you can be a dangerous club. You get more guys on base and then all of a sudden when that big swing comes through, you’re plating more runs. So, we’ll see if this pitcher can get some soft contact. Let the defense work behind him. and a swing and a miss. Well, as a hitter, you’re hoping that the command on that sinker doesn’t come until later in the ball game. But if that’s how it’s going to be all day, it’s going to be a tough one for the offense. One out, base is empty. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. That one misses now. One and two. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. Couldn’t catch up to the heater. Two outs. Base is empty. Lauraniano comes up to hit. Just missed. Peterson 29 years old. A former first round pick back in 2017. headed towards the corner and that is a foul ball. Two down. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Got him swinging for the strikeout. He notches strikeout number 150 this season. Padres’s down in order. Now the Mets will step up for their first shot in a scoreless ball game. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Back here in Queens, our starter in this one, U Darvish. Chris, how about a scouting report? Well, what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season. So when you consider consistency, the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners, that’s critical in winning games today, especially when teams are depending on the big swing, the home run to win ball games, fought off foul. Well, here’s a game Lindor will never forget. One night in July of 2023, he went five for five with a home run, two triples, and he scored three runs. That stat line is so rare. Only one other player has done it. Guess who? Willie Mays in 1958. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. One. Hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Man aboard on the leadoff single. Seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there. I know that was a ground ball, but it was absolutely hammered through the infield. That’s not one you’re excited to get in front of if you’re an infielder. You know they used to say charge it crazy. Now another solid power season. Jarvis checks on the runner. That’s a strike. Lindor on at first. Nobody out. MVP. Sodto swinging a drive deep right field. That’s back. And it’s gone. Home run. Juanto goes deep. His second homer this series. And they throw a pair on the board. It’s two nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Talk about being locked in at the plate. Most guys have a really difficult time changing their timing for such a slow breaking ball. But he allowed it to travel. Didn’t get too excited and he turned that pitch around. And now it’s the polar bear Pete Lonzo. Pitch misses there. Ball one. Sing. Maybe some nerves getting the best of him in the first. Well, it’s hard to know exactly if it’s nerves or not, but he just doesn’t have it right now. Those hitters on the other side, they’re going to say it’s nerves and use that as a competitive edge to try to jump on him even more. Next offering is in for a strike. That one down the line and it goes just foul. Heart of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. They tried to get him to chase on a slider down and away. Still two and two after the foul ball. Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Just indecisive in that at bat. He couldn’t commit to the slider. Tried to sit in between. Just not able to put the bat on the ball. Here’s Brandon NMO. And there’s a ball. Still only one out here in the inning. And another ball. That’s a really good take right there. Slider down and in. very difficult to get on the same plane and do anything with that one. Catches the corner for a strike. Wow. Just a beautiful back door slider right there. If you’ve got any chance of hitting that pitch, you have to wait until the absolutely last millisecond. Just a tough pitch to hit and not an easy one to throw either. Squeezes it. Two down. Let’s take a peek at the Mets lineup here. This team can really pile up the runs, Chris. They’re among the top teams in scoring this year. Yeah. And when you can get a lead and be out in front, it really changes what that opposing manager can do with the bullpen. And on top of that, it helps your own pitching staff. It gives them more margin for error. So instead of pitchers squeezing the ball, trying to throw darts and be perfect, they can relax, let the ball come out of their hands, and pitch effectively. So that offense and the ability to score runs also helps the pitching and the defense. Check swing tried to hold up. Now an appeal to first and that’s a swing according to umpire Matthew Ross. That’s way outside now. One and two. That one missed on the ground right side. The flip to the pitcher covering out number three. But two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run homer. It’s now a two nothing ball game. You’re dialed into the show. Back here at City Field. Second inning set to go. Here’s Gavin Sheets now. Left hand bat. Well, after putting up a nice inning on offense, got some runs across. This is where you look for the starter to go out there, have a shutdown inning. Don’t give that other team any hope. Uh you just hope that he can get through this inning, get the bats back up there while they’re hot. Fast ball for a strike. It’s 0 and one. Ball one there. Boo. Our man Daryl Parker DP at home plate for this one. Pretty average size strike zone, but the book on him is that it sort of moves around. You can’t always count on how he’s going to call it from game to game. Yeah, he’s one of those umpires that I have to see make his call on a borderline pitch before I start making my call. Like you said, it’s not always predictable, but it’s pretty fair for the most part. Fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Came inside with that two strike fast nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate. Couldn’t get around on it and catch it out front. Many times if you do, it’s a foul ball. And you know, a lot of pitchers, they really don’t like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter. And when they’ve got him up against the ropes, got to figure out a way to put them away. Did a nice job right there. NMO has it sized up. Hauls it in for the out. And there’s two away. Now here’s Jake Croninworth. There’s the strike. He’s a bad ball hitter, so even if you get him to chase pitches outside the zone, he still might beat you. Not an easy out by any means. And a foul ball. He stays alive. Two outs. Base is empty. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Goes down looking. Nothing doing there for the Friars. And they’re down two nothing. And we’re back. We head to the bottom of the second. Here’s the second base, Jeff McNeel. McNeel, Darish back to work and that’s in for a strike and it’s 0 and one. That’s down and in. That misses. And that’s ball two. Come on. And he grounds one to the right side. Croninworth throws on to first. Leadoff man retired here in the second. Good sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for. Ball on the ground. Nice ground out. Here’s Starling Marte. New York. That one finds the zone. That’s strike one. And a foul ball. And there’s a ball. And the sweeper is off the plate. Swing and a ground ball base hit right field. So they get a man aboard with a one out single. Batting eight, center fielder. Cedric Mullins now at the plate. breaking ball through there for a strike. Looks like he’s just sizing him up there. Really good pitch to hit, but he took it all the way. Sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game. That may be a pitch that he turns on. Next offering is in for a strike. That one way inside. Marte at first. One gone. That’s just missed. Really good take, especially with two strikes. And ball four, two aboard. That’s a tough one to swallow right there. If you’re on the mound, you’re ahead in the count 02 and you just couldn’t find a way to put him away. It’s going to be frustrating if that one comes back to bite him. First and second, one out. Here’s the catcher, Francisco Alvarez. That one misses. That’s five straight. Could use a ground ball here. Something in the infield. Runner at first base. Get two. Get out of this. And that’s downstairs and the count is two and0. Tough spot right here. A couple runners on. Two ball count. You can’t nibble, but you have to execute and finish your pitch. If you leave something out over the plate, it’s going to bring in some runs. Swing and a base hit. And they stop him at third. So base is loaded with one away. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Recognized the break on that pitch early and that allowed him to keep his front shoulder in. You know, it’s easy to bail on those front door breaking balls, but a great job right there of letting it travel then unloading. A nice balance swing. Now the base is loaded. Big opportunity for them to break this game open. Here’s Francisco Lindor. First pitch and he just misses. All loaded up. Bottom half of inning number two. Swaying at a highf fly ball. Well struck. That’s back. It’s gone. Grand slam. That one felt good. His 27th home run of the season. And they tack on to their lead. It’s 6 nothing. Listen to these fans. This place is absolutely buzzing right now. You can feel the energy all the way up here in our broadcast booth. Well, he comes through big time with the grand slam here. But you also got to give some credit to the guys ahead of him. Good at bats to get on base and really set the table for a very special moment in this one. Here comes the skipper. And we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. That does it for you, Darvish. And this is one he’d like to forget. back with a new arm after this. Out of the bullpen for the Padres’s, Nick Paveta. I think it’s got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard. Just doesn’t have the same intensity to it. But he’s got to find a way because these batters count the same for the stats obviously regardless of the score. And now it’s Juan Stoodto. He’s already homerred here in this one. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. One down. Base is empty. Swinging a foul straight back. The one-1 is fouled off. Pitch misses. And now two balls and two strikes just off the inside edge. He’s really tightening up his hitting zone with two strikes here. I love it. And a pitch. And he grounds one back up the middle. Oh, what a stop from his knees. The throw. It’s there. And that’s a great play. Great cat-like reflexes right there. Lays out, knocks the ball down, and then fires with that rocket arm all the way across the diamond. Man, put this guy on the mound. Two down, base is empty. So up next for New York, Pete Alonzo first offering and it just misses. hammers that one deep left field and forget it. Into the second deck it goes. It’s their second home run of the inning. It’s 7 nothing. That’s their third home run of the game. They’re having a lot of fun at the plate in this one. And they’ve got the long ball working for them on autopilot. Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. Next is the cleanup hitter for the Mets, Brandon NMO. And a breaking ball misses outside. And now two and nothing. No question about this one. It’s out of here. They do it again. Backto back homers and they boost their lead. It’s 8 nothing. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop and they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one. Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. Backto back jacks. And this club is fired up right now, boo. I mean, this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup feeding off each other and the collective confidence just continues to grow. And now it’s Mark Vientos. 0 for one so far. Fast ball for a strike out towards right center field. Merrill sizing this one up. makes the grab and that’s the inning. They bring nine to the plate and six come around to score. We head on now to the top of the third. It’s the Mets eight and the Padres’s nothing. top half of the third inning. Stepping in for San Diego, Jose Glaciius. It’s interesting. He plays kind of a a power spot defensively, but runs pretty well. So, when you’re looking at that position, you’re not expecting someone that has maybe above average speed, but he does. Makes the catch and there’s one down. Freddy Fine getting ready to hit. Here we go. Right through there for a strike. Pop foul out of play off to the right. on the ground and foul ball. Here’s a high-fly ball out to center. Mullen settles under it. He’s got it. And there’s two away. Next for the Padres’s, Mason McCoy. Ripped to short. Lindor on to first. And that is that. Three up, three down for San Diego. Still 8 nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark as we go to the last of the third. Now it’s the second baseman, Jeff McNeel. That’s in there. Strike one. Well, these Mets really impressing me with the quality of their bats in this one. It’s been fun getting a chance to see them go to work. They jumped all over the starter and knocked him out of the game early. He just was never able to settle in and the damage was done by the time he got the hook. Stling Marte up to him. One for one with a single and a run scored so far. And takes low for ball one. in the dirt. That one out to right. Tatis puts it away for the out. One away. Now batting center fielder Cedric Mullen and stepping in for New York, Cedric Mullins walked his first time. Yeah, that’s fouled off. And a curve misses outside. Oh, he’s really working him away this at bat. Sometimes take a little bit off velocity. Try to get a rollover something on the ground. Stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield. And that misses two and one. Was good pitch there. really had some run and finished little up and end just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it, you get a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Swing and a miss for the strike out. Chase the fast up the ladder for strike three. Thought it was a pretty good pitch. Top of the strike zone. We’re seeing more fast balls in that location. And hitters, especially with two strikes, have to be ready to pull the trigger. York. Alvarez in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. Count one and one. McNeel the runner at first with two gone. And now one and two. One ball, two strike. That one drifts inside. Stays alive. Next pitch misses and now it’s three and two. Great RBI spot here. Just got to stay focused on the pitch. The runner will be in motion, so something in the gap should definitely score it. Swings and misses. He swung over top of the curveball. So, they can’t do anything with the leadoff single there. On to inning number four. It’s the Mets eight and the Padres’s nothing. Back here in Queens, John Shami with Chris Singleton. And set to lead off the fourth, Fernando Tatiz Jr. York pulls that one foul. Tatis goes 6 feet 3 in 26 years old and he was born in the Dominican Republic. This guy who grew up in big league clubous got to be a nice feeling Sigy when your father played in the big leagues and oh this one high and deep way back there and gone. He sends a rocket to left. His 23rd of the year and they’re on the scoreboard. It’s 8-1. Singi, that’s his 150th career home run. Man, Boo, 150 trips around the bases. That’s a lot. Congrats to him. I tell you what, that’s a lot of trotting. He got on plane with that high fast ball. Then look how his bat stays in the zone for a long time. Absolutely crushed that pitch. And here is Jackson Merrill. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. Oh, he’s looking great so far. It helps when over 80% of your first pitches are strikes. He might be able to go the distance if he keeps this up. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. Top half of inning number four. Slides, but he can’t come up with it. Now batting the designated hitter, Raone Lauriano. Here’s Raone Lauraniano. And ball one. Love it here at City Field. You know, it replaced Old Sha Stadium back in 2009, and Chipper Jones was really sad to see it go. It’s actually the third home of the Mets since they started out at the polo grounds for two seasons before Shay was finished. So, two balls and no strikes. He looks more focused at the plate and working the count after that first at bat strikeout. Ruer at first with no outs here. Hit hard on the ground to short. Offbalance feed. There’s one over to Alonzo. Double play. They made that double play look so easy, but it was far from routine. That’s the one thing about big leaguers. They make tough plays look simple. Here’s the cleanup hitter for the Padres’s, Gavin Sheets. Fast ball on the inside corner for a strike. Not close with that one. And that’s ball one right through there for a strike. Gets a piece and stays alive. Next one misses and the count is two and two. That’s inside. Wow, this guy’s really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run. I love his tenacity and a payoff pitch in the air left field down the line and that’ll fall for a base hit. So he gets a hit after a long battle with the pitcher. The first move felt like a bit of a guess. You have to be right in those spots or things can get away from you awfully quickly. Ryan O’Harn comes up to hit. fly to left his first time. There’s the strike. Sheets off of first with two away. Ground ball left side and that’s just fouled. That’s a ball. Squirts away a little bit. Knocks that one away. And we’ll do it again. Swinging a drive deep right field. Marte really on his horse for it. Won’t get to this one. It drops. Foul. Little early on that fast ball. I’m sure the pitcher taking a note. Look for an offspe pitch on this next one. Next offering is downstairs. This guy’s a fun guy to watch taking at bat. He just battles up there. He doesn’t take a pitch off at all. Makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there. You could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away. Swings through that and it’s a strikeout. He picks up his fifth strike out on the hill. But a solo home run will at least get this closer to respectability. Still a lopsided affair at 81 now. Back after this on the show. Back here at City Field, ready to go for the last half of the inning. Stepping in is the switch hitting shortstop, Francisco Lindor. And a big swing and a miss. He’s been great in this one. Eye hand coordination just failed him a little bit right there. Pitch misses there. And that’s ball one. And that one a little bit high to the right side. Croninworth and one gone in the fourth as they get the leadoff man. Up next for the Mets designated hitter. Here’s Juan Stoodto. He’s already homerred in this game. Gets the outside corner with that one. Base is empty. One away. We’re here in the bottom of the fourth. That one’s in there. 0 and2. Well, he didn’t like those first two pitches. Now in an 02 hole. He’s going to have to battle. Hope he gets a mistake. cuts and misses. It’s a strikeout. Just blown away in that at bat. Three fast balls, all strikes. He wasn’t even able to foul one off. There’s not much you can take away from an at bat like that as a hitter other than maybe there’s something wrong with your eyes. He’s got to have better timing on the fast ball next time. And that is out of play. the 01. That was the sweeper, but it missed. Hammered down the right side, but foul. Two outs. Just misses and the count’s even at two. And that’s outside. Rip towards third onto O’Harn. And that takes care of Alonzo. And it’s a one, two, three inning. Mets go down quickly and it remains an 8 to one game. And we’re back. We go to the top of the fifth. So digging in now for San Diego, Jake Croninworth. Peterson back to work. That misses. And that is ball one. You know, these Padres’s just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game. Chasing pitches has been a big part of the story. We’ve seen it quite a bit today. It’s been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn’t look like they’re seeing it very well as a group. And a swing and a miss. And on the mound, you know, confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses. He’s had them eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game. One and two now. Ca strikes him out for the second time today. Now that third Jose Glaciius the next up for the Padres’s fly to right his first time. York sliced the other way. That’s a base hit and the Padres’s have a man aboard with one out. Now batting catcher Freddy Fine. Freddy Fine will hit next. 0 for one with a fly out to center late on that fast ball. Boo, the runner at first, needs to be careful right here. He’s dealing with a pickoff artist on the mound. in the dirt. That misses the zone. Ball two. fights it off. You’ll see another Next offering misses down and away. Ninth pitch of the at bat do next. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. Swag and a miss. Struck him out. Picks up strikeout number seven. Well, he’s been racking up the strikeouts. And what’s so impressive, not walking anyone. I mean, this guy’s just going right after hitters, filling up the strike zone. And it looks like hitters, they’re trying to think with him, but they just are a pitch behind. Dominating stuff out there on the mound. McCoy stands in now. and watches strike one and he swings through that one. Filthy change up right there. Just pulled the string. This one popped off. McNeel, he’s got it. And that is that. Padres’s leave one. It’s still an 81 ball game. And welcome back to the ballpark. And now here is Brandon NMO. Breaking ball misses down and away. Doublebarreled action in the bullpen for San Diego. Number 17 getting loose out there. Matsui a left-hander also throwing the 10. That one is absolutely belted. That’s back there. And it’s gone. Another homer. His second home run of the game. And they add to the lead. It’s 91. That’s their fifth homer of the game. Man, they’re all getting into the action. And it’s starting to feel like a home run derby up here. When you’re working with this kind of velocity, so critical that you move the ball around, work quickly, and make sure that you keep that hitter off balance. Clearly not fooled by the location or the velocity. He was all over that fast ball. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Nick Pavetta will depart and the home run really bit him today as he exits on the hook for the loss. New arm coming on after the break. So the Padres’s with a new arm on the mound. Number 17. He’s into the game, but the base is empty. San Diego number 17. Let’s go. Mark Ventos digs in now at 96. That pitch is in for a strike. One run across in the frame so far. Last half of inning number five. Out to center. Merrill has this one sized up. Calls it in. And there’s one away. Now batting second base. Jeff McNeel stands in. McNeel hits the corner at 98 for a strike. fouls one off out of play. Back to our left and that one is lifted in the air. Sheets under it. They got it for out number two. Now batting rightielder. Two out. Space is empty. Now at the plate, Starling Marte. One for two. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When she elevates, guys aren’t touched it. Next offering is down low. swinging a ground ball and it goes just foul 22 now. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock and that keeps the inning going. Now batting center fielder Cedric Cedric Mullins up now for the Mets. A strike out and a walk. upstairs. One and0. And he chases a high fast ball there. One ball, two strength. Battling here as he fouls it away. That misses the zone. Two and two. Marte off of first with two away. lifted in the air left field. Pretty well struck. Merrill makes the catch and that is the third out of the inning. The Mets do pick up a run on this solo blast and this is now a 911 ball game. It’s Major League Baseball on the show. Back here in a blowout, which gives us a chance to talk about just about anything. Bro, don’t get me fired. Do you collect baseball cards? You know, when I was a kid, I used to put them in my back tire of my bicycle so it would sound like a motorcycle. Probably ruined some good cards back then, but don’t really have much of a collection. The other day I came across a binder that my wife had in one of the drawers and my son’s got some baseball cards. So, we’ll be looking to see if there’s any kind of retirement income in there. So, my dad told me that he had a bunch of Mickey Man rookie cards and a whole bunch of valuable cards and his mom tossed them because what you know what did she know? So, I made my mom keep all my baseball cards and I really don’t have any that are valuable and that story stunk by me. anywhere outside with a breaking ball. Clearly down in this ball game and you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing. It’s got to come one at bat at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch. Make that guy on the mound work to get you out. That one ripped. Marte makes the grab. One down. Now batting Jackson Merrill the next up for the Padres’s. I think when you contemplate him as a player the first thing you think about is defense and you think about that great arm. I also think about the speed. If he can get on that’s going to give one more thing for that pitcher to think about. One down, base is empty. And that one fouled off. Andy O2. This ball’s chopped on the ground. Slings to first. Two quick outs to open the top of the six. Now batting hitter Raone Lauraniano. So two down now. And here is Raone Lauraniano. bowl for two in this one. York. And that one is downstairs and it’s one and0. Right through there for a strike. Next pitch is downstairs. Two down, nobody on. And we’re the top half of the sixth. A sliding stop, fires to first. Nicely done for the Owl. Padres’s down in order. They trail it big. It’s 91. Back here in Queens. Bottom of the sixth inning and the batter now, Francisco Alvarez. Francisco Alvarez. Line drive and foul ball. The 01 just missed. Movement in the bullpen. Ron Marinacio preparing to come on if needed. Peralta getting loose as well. So now one and two. It might be time to choke up a little bit. Get that front foot down early. Maybe even just spread out. He’s really late right now. Swing and a line drive and a base hit out into left center field and the leadoff man aboard. Back to the top of the lineup. Francisco Lindor comes up to the plate. Lindor and a foul ball. Lindor was born in Puerto Rico, but actually played his high school ball in Florida. here in the air left field and that’ll fall for a base hit and out to a board. All right, there you go. Juan Sodto up now for the Mets. Juan Sodto. Ball one low. And another ball. When the skipper calls down to the bullpen, he’s expecting the guy to come in and get outs. So far, not getting what he was hoping for. No outs. Ruers at first and second. Next offering is in for a strike. Ah, ground ball and that’s through the infield and they’re happy to play station to station right here. Base is loaded. Nobody out. That’s now three hits in a row for the offense. Timing on the swing was good. Able to shoot the ball up the middle. Didn’t square it up as much as he probably would have liked, but that’s a good approach paying off. So, they’re all loaded up. Here’s Pete Alonzo and the first pitch misses for ball one. Well, he’s just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter. Might be a good time for somebody to call a timeout. Maybe the pitching coach go out there and talk to him just a little bit. All loaded up. Dangerous hitter at the plate. Line drive and this might be trouble. One runs in, two runs are in. He’s safe and they clear the bases. And the Padres’s manager making his way towards the mound as he will make the move. Number 17 won’t go any further and he’s responsible for the runner on second, so the book isn’t closed on him yet. We’ll be right back. Yuki Matsui takes over on the mound and he’s been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year. typically at least one in innings. So, he’ll be tough to get to. And next for the Mets, Brandon NMO. He’s already homerred twice. The last one back in the fifth. Just seems like he can’t miss right now seeing the baseball as well as anyone on the field. Now, I know the odds are against him, but who’s going to bet against this guy right now? And that’s a little bit high. Runner at second. Nobody out. Swaging a popup foul out of play off to the right side. That’ll find the stands. He swings and fouls one off. Caught him looking for the K. Well, just couldn’t pull the trigger on the fast ball right there. And I don’t think he was taking it, thinking it might be a cold ball or anything. I just think he was flat out frozen. Did not expect that location in my opinion. So up next for New York, Mark Vientos 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out. Fast ball in for a strike. 0 and one. All right. Swing and a foul. Pushed off to the right and that will get out of play. The two strike three and that’s two in a row. tunnneled that pitch. Thought it was going to be a slider breaking in off the plate, but it hung the corner. And at that point, when he recognized it, it was just too late. And now here’s Jeff McNeel, one for three. That one’s in there. Strike one. just missed. Next offering upstairs. Two outs and one in scoring position. Late swing, fouled to the left. Line drive out towards left field. That’s a base hit. The throw in, but it’s offline and the league continues to grow. Now Starling Marte and a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. McNeel leads off first with two down in the inning and it’s fouled away. That’s to third. Delacius fires over to first. Marte retired. That’ll end the inning after a lot of scoring. They get four runs on five hits, no errors, and leave one. Seventh inning coming up. Mets out in front. It’s 13 to one. Top of inning number seven. Stepping in for San Diego. Gavin Sheets. And that’s off the outside edge. And that’s ball one. That one fouled off on the ground right side and a foul ball swung on. belted and that should be extra bases around first and hustling for second in safely. It’s a double and his second hit. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Pretty much just a textbook double into the gap and when you can drop one in there between the outfielders, you know you’re making the turn at first. Just an excellent swing. And here comes the Mets manager to the mound. Pitching change coming. David Peterson departs and he exits with a nice lead. Threw the ball well. And we’ll have a new pitcher when we come back. Sean Mania gets handed the rock out of the pen. Compared to some days, this is a pretty low leverage appearance for him. So, he should be fairly free and easy out there. Still have to keep yourself sharp and attack the strike zone. Ryan O’Harn the next up for the Padres’s. It’s in and out of his glove. And now runners at the corners. Nobody out. That’s the first out in the top of the seventh. Now batting second base Jake Croninworth. Next for the Padres’s Jake Croninworth who’s 0 for two with a pair of strikeouts. Foul ball lifted in the air down the left side and there are two down and good defensive play prevents a run from scoring right there. Now batting third base Jose Iglacius. Jose Iglacius gets a chance to hit now. And this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here. Inside just missed. Activity in the bullpen. Ryan Hley up and throwing. Swift also getting ready. just missed and that clips the inside corner. Two outs with a runner at third. Swing and a miss. Struck him out and that will end the inning. Bottom of the inning and stepping in for New York, Cedric Mullins. Matsui, 29 years old and he was born in Japan. Ripped in the air left field and it’ll touch down for a base hit. Had a good start to the inning. went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he could handle. Showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way. Didn’t get jumpy, didn’t try to pull the ball. He let it get deep, took the barrel right to it, and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit. Alvarez the next to hit. Takes ball one. Count one and keep it going. Two balls, no strikes to count. Mullins aboard here at first with nobody out. The 20 is in for a strike. Come on, York. And there’s a rocket into the outfield and that’s going to kick into the corner. Mullins headed home. He’s safe and they extend their lead. Back to the top of the order now. Now it’s the shortstop. Francisco Lindor top of the zone and it’s called a strike. Runner in scoring position. Nobody out here in the bottom of the seventh. Next offering is in for a strike. He doesn’t seem to like to pitch up. Hasn’t offered on either one of those pitches. 02 count now. I think the guy’s going to climb the ladder out there. in the air right field. Tatis puts it away for the out. One down. Now betting designated hitter. Juan Sodto up now for the Mets. And the pitch a little bit low. Ball one. Nope. One out and a runner at second. Fast ball for a strike. Next offering is fouled back. And that’s downed away. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. Runner at second here. One gone. And down on strikes he goes. That K is his third of the game. In steps the polar bear Pete Lonzo. So clutch you could argue that he’s been this team’s MVP this year. First pitch misses and another ball. Well, no need to go right at this guy. First base is open. He can hurt you, so make him expand his zone. If he doesn’t, give him a walk. Ruer at second. Two down. Foul ball there. That one off the mark. Ball three. And that one clips the corner. Back-to-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. Payoff pitch and he’ll do it again. Man at second gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. Do it again. So now two on and two outs. Oh, looking for a swing and miss right there or for the ump to help him out and make a call with that last pitch, but neither happened. Close pitch, but a good take to earn that walk. So, two down. Here’s the left fielder, Brandon NMO. And first off is fouled off. Comes up empty. That’s strike two. And that one upstairs. And that’s awfully close. I don’t know how you take that. He’s seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hand really well right now. Fouls it off. Still one and two. First and second, two down. Swing in a line drive. And that’s a base hit into right field. Here comes Alvarez around third. He’ll score and they throw on the brakes at third with no intention of testing the strong arm and right. Manager out of the dugout now. And it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Yuki Matsui done for the night and he’s on the hook for the runners at second and third. So looking for some help there. Back in a minute. Ron Marinacio will take over here. Well, they need someone to stop the bleeding and keep the score right where it is. Seems like a tough task today with the way this lineup is swinging it. So, two on with two away. Mark Vientos up now for the Mets. Swinging a foul straight back. Two on, two outs. Way outside. One and one. Let’s go. Just missed. It’s a big opportunity right here, but I love the way he’s slowing the game down. He’s shrinking his zone, making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit. Outside low now. Three and one. And that’ll load the bases. batting. Two outs, bases full. And next for the Mets, Jeff McNeel. And a first pitch fast ball is in for a strike. Tough situation right here. So important as a pitcher to get ahead in the count as he did right there. You’ll one Alonso at third. NMO on second. Vientos at first. Two out of the inning and one and two. Fouls it back with two strikes. Two outs and it’s even up. And it remains two and two. Good battle here. About to be the eighth pitch of the at bat. And that just misses. That is ball four and that’ll bring home a run. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty. And now the right fielder, Starling Marte. Starling Mart. Check swing. He went too far and it’s a strike. and one. Two outs. Bases are full. Yeah, that’s fouled off. That one missed. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Marte tries to hold up. Appeal to first and he held up. And now the count is full. And another power hitter lurking in the on deck circle. Fouled off. And they’ll do it again. out to short. Base hit. One run is in now. A long throw home. It’s off the mark and he scores and the lead continues to grow. And now the center fielder Cedric Mullins. That one’s in there. 0 and one. Check. Swing. Called. Strike. And a swing and a miss. And that’s that. All in all, 10 come to the plate. They bat around and five score. We look ahead to inning number eight. Mets are out on top. 18-1. And we’re back all set for the start of the inning. And here’s the catcher, Freddy Fine. Maniah back to work up and in. Ball one. Swings through that one for strike one. Benny really sells the change up with that arm action. So a foul ball makes it one and two. Line drive. Toss to Alonzo. Lead off man is out here in the eighth. Up next for the Padres. Short stop McCoy. Here’s the shorts stop at the play. Mason McCoy. The shorts stop takes a ball. Highf fly ball lifted in the air right field. That’s out number two. Now batting rightielder. Two down. Base is empty. Now it’s Fernando Tatis Jr. He’s a guy Chris whose highlights include some of the best throws from the outfield that you will ever see. Definitely one of the best arms of the sport. Hard hit left side. Lindor on the first and they take care of Tatis for the out. And that is that back here at City Field. Bottom of the eighth. And now the catcher comes up to him. Francisco Alvarez. fouled off left side. And he can’t come up with it. Still finds a way to get off a throw and they get him. The misplay made it a bit messy, but they clean things up for the out. And now it’s Frankie Lindor. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond, and this guy is at the top of the list. And that one got a piece of him. Now, not many hitters get tagged by a change up like that when it’s coming from the opposite side. But at least it probably didn’t stink too bad. Sodto stands in here, leaves that one off the inside. Lindor, the base runner at first with one out. And that is out of play. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still manages a throw and it’s in time. It wasn’t the smoothest play you’ll see today, but they still get the out. Pete Alonszo. Pete Alonzo up now for the Mets. That clips the corner. Yeah, there’s the strike. Perhaps not quite ready to hit. First two pitches by him for a couple of strikes. Now back is against the wall. He’s going to have to figure something out and figure it out quickly. just missed. Too close for me partner to take that O2 fastball, but for whatever reasons he let it go by. He’s still in the at bat. I don’t think he’ll let the next one go. Fights that one away. Still one and two. And there’s a ball. Good eye right there. Runner at second. Two down here. The bottom half of the eighth inning. Here’s a rip to short, but he’s there for the third out. No runs, no hits, no errors, and one left on. Through eight full. The Mets lead this one 18-1. And welcome back to the ballpark. New inning getting started. So digging in now for San Diego. Jackson Merrill and first offering is fouled off. Gets the strike. That was the sweeper. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Number 26, the rookie right-hander is getting loose. Number 21 getting cranked up as well in the air right side of the infield. Alonso, he makes the grab and there’s one away. That was a good hard fast ball with some nice ride up in the zone right there. hitter looked like he was on it, but I think that velocity at the end just beat him. Instead of a line drive or something, hit deep. It’s a pop up and an easy out for the defense. Lauraniano batting with one down, takes a strike. Well, they say it’s the best pitch in baseball. Strike one. You get ahead on a good hitter as well. Gives you a little bit more confidence to move through the at bat. swing and a fly ball. Well struck left field. Mullins makes the grab. Two down. Now that leftielder Gavin Sheets. So they’re down to their final out. Gavin Sheets the next up for the Padres’s. He’s been a great free agent sign outside. Check swing and he went strike one. One, the Padres’s down to their final strike. Off the mark there. Two and two. He puts it away and that’ll do it. The Mets take this one in a blowout. Clearly the bats came to play today and the pitching and defense as well. We saw some outstanding plays. Great performances all the way around. Just one run allowed. They never gave the other side a chance. So, this one got a little out of hand for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
