Vikings Fans Get BAD News After Horrible Loss vs. Falcons

[Music] What’s going on everybody? Welcome in the Vikings now by chat sports. My name is Patrick Seatman as we are here on overreaction Monday giving some takes around the Vikings horrible loss to the Atlanta Falcons last night on Sunday Night Football as they drop the game with a final score of 20 to the six. But I quickly want to start off with the injuries here for the Vikings because the injury report is massive. And you know, obviously injuries played a massive part, I think, in the Vikings losing. It wasn’t the whole piece of the pie, but it definitely played a massive factor. I mean, you’re without star left tackle Christian Darasol, Harrison Smith, Jeff Okuda, Andrew Van Ginkle, Justin School, Ryan Kelly, Aaron Jones, Blake Cashman. Especially the loss of Christian Darasaw. We noticed that the most yesterday. I think the difference between a star left tackle and a backup left tackle might be the biggest difference in any position in the sport of football right now. And you know, you could call it making excuses. You could call it whatever you want, but injuries aren’t the reason the Vikings lost that game last night. It was more of their own doing, but they definitely played a massive factor. Like if you just think like, oh, injuries play no factor in this game. I just disagree with that wholeheartedly because you’re losing probably your second and third most important players defensively in Cashman and Van Ginkle. You’re losing Christian Darasol. He who is still not back from rehabing that torn ACL MCL. You just had a lot of injuries and even like Ryan Kelly getting uh getting a concussion midway through the game, which is also concerning given his injury history. but he was probably the guy setting the protections and when you lose that veteran center for a young quarterback, we saw how that’s going to play out. So, obviously, you know, injuries weren’t the sole reason why the Vikings lost, but that injury bug is massive and uh definitely causing problems for this football team early on in the season, but I’ll ask you guys this first and I’ll give you guys my five takeaways around this game. What is your biggest concern with the Vikings right now? And if it’s the quarterback, it’s more than acceptable. If it’s offense as a whole, offensive line, Kevin Oonnell, you guys let me know your thoughts. I want to hear from you guys first here on today’s show. Let me know what is your biggest concern with the Vikings right now. All right, let’s dive into some of the top takeaways here. We’re going to start off with the quarterback. Um, huge talking point around this Vikings team right now. And is he a bust? People are willing to just kick the tires on a 22-year-old kid making his second ever career start. I think if you are already jumping off the JJ McCarthy bandwagon, you probably weren’t on it in the first place. And think about all the things that were working against JJ McCarthy yesterday. I think the biggest one was this guy became a father on Friday. He missed a whole day of practice Thursday, which is a very important practice throughout the week. I think that was and I blame myself for not realizing that this is a huge trap game and a potential emotional letdown spot for the Vikings. Like you had a lot working against you. This was his second career start. He’s just 22 years old. He was on his third string left tackle. Walter Rouse was in the game at uh during the second half. You had a backup center. You were coming off a short week. And I understand he wasn’t good. And you could even call this making excuses for the guy. But him becoming a dad on Friday. I mean, that’s huge. There is so much on this plate as a 22-year-old kid. There was so much to overcome. He knows the pressure that’s on him. And plus, he’s on the prime time stage. His first two career starts. That’s a lot to deal with. So, if again, if you’re kicking the tires on McCarthy, you’re hopping off the bandwagon. I think that’s a clownish take. And if you’re hopping off the bandwagon, again, you probably weren’t on the bandwagon in the first place. But, you know, there are concerns with McCarthy. I’m not saying it’s, you know, perfect by any means. I mean, you take out that fourth quarter versus the Chicago Bears, it’s pretty bad. You know, 18 of 33 for only 214 yards, 36 yards on the ground, zero touchdowns, and four turnovers. Obviously, this is not good enough. this is not enough for, you know, this Vikings team to really, you know, get to where we want them to go. But there’s no doubt that JJ McCarthy has looked terrible during the first couple of weeks. But also, you got to remember this guy was a developmental prospect. You didn’t take him like the Falcons took Michael Penn where he is 25 years old. He is more ready to play right now in the NFL compared to JJ. Jaden Daniels, an older prospect, he is more ready to play than JJ. Same with Bo Knicks. So, yes, he has looked bad. He has not played good football, but he had a lot working against him. He still didn’t have Jordan Addison. No Christian Darasol. Lost his starting center. 22 years old. Second career start. He just became a dad a couple of days ago and had to miss a whole practice. So, if you’re kicking tires on JJ McCarthy, I disagree with the take. He’s going to bounce back. He’s going to learn from this. And what if this is just what we needed? We need to be humbled a little bit. This offense needs to get back in the lab and improve and specifically the quarterback. But I got full faith in this guy bouncing back. But he looks bad, but I think he’s gonna bounce back and hopefully, you know, finally find his stride hopefully in the second half of the year when he’s playing some good football. But we can also talk about a big reason why McCarthy struggled. And the offensive line was an absolute joke yesterday. Those five offensive linemen should frank frankly be embarrassed for the performance they put out there. It was an absolute joke and that was a joke of a performance up front and mainly in pass protection. Now I am not sure if Ryan Kelly going out kind of just threw a wrench in the whole thing because I’m guessing he is the one veteran center. He’s setting the protections and you know there was three sacks yesterday where a guy just came in untouched like JJ didn’t have a chance on those plays. That’s up front. Now, I don’t know if that’s on Ryan Kelly and then JJ had to start setting protections and he struggled in that aspect of the game, but up front it was a joke of a performance. And also, Christian Darasaw returning will help a lot. Like, there’s no doubt in my mind like he is one of the best tackles in the National Football League and he’s going to make one Donovan Jackson who’s playing next to him a whole lot better. But CD is not going to completely solve this issue. Like, there are major concerns on the offensive line. And it’s also concerning that you put a lot of money up front this offseason. Brian O’Neal’s getting paid. You paid Will Fry. Ryan Kelly got paid. You spent a first round pick on Donovan Jackson. Obviously, you got Christian Darasaw on the left side, but you’ve spent a lot of money up front and we’re not really seeing the return on investment at least so far during the first couple weeks. And also, you didn’t give your quarterback a chance yesterday. Like, I understand JJ, he was offtarget. He was inaccurate a lot, but you didn’t give him a damn chance. And once you did finally protect him, JJ got happy feet. Like there was a couple plays in that second half where he finally got some protection up front and he started doing the oldfashioned Kurt Cousins pat the football where he’s just sitting there in the pocket. He’s not trusting his guts. He’s not trusting that first read and it just all started to spiral. And that’s what was, you know, so concerning yesterday is like the Vikings couldn’t pull themselves out of that rut. And I will tip my cap. I thought the Falcons front seven yesterday was fantastic. I thought their linebackers were flying around. I thought their edge rushers were, you know, taking advantage of a great situation for them. So overall, the offense was pretty bad and you know, same with the play caller, same with the head coach. Kevin Okcono was bad yesterday. I think Kevin Okcono is one of the best coaches in the league. But we just got to call it like it is. It was a poor performance from the head coach in the play calling department. And what frustrated me so much yesterday was there was just no quick game. There was no answers to what the Falcons were doing. He just still kept trying to have these long developing plays. And the game yesterday was actually the worst offensive performance on a EPA per play basis during the Kevin Okonnell era. Like, so keep in mind that was worse than that one Jiren Hall game against the Green Bay Packers. That was worse than that one Cowboys game when you got beat 40 to three. Yesterday was the worst offensive performance in the EPA per play stat under the Kevin Okonnell era. And where is the quick game? At KOC, you’re fantastic. You’re a great play caller, great play designer, but you still haven’t shown a consistent enough ability to run the football. And when teams are pressing up, when they’re playing super aggressive, there’s just no quick game. Like, get the ball out to the playmakers. You got too many weapons on this team to have Justin Jefferson leave this game with only four targets. Like there’s got to be easier ways to scheme them up where it’s just a quick slant or just get him a wide receiver screen or something, but you got to get the ball in the hands of the playmakers. And if you don’t trust JJ to do that, then we actually have some serious problems here because the Vikings are in this tough spot where you’ve got kind of this win now team. You got a bunch of good players, but you also got a developmental quarterback and JJ McCarthy. So, it’s just an interesting spot for this Vikings team where they’re trying to, you know, develop the young quarterback, but they’re also trying to win games because they got playoff aspirations. And one thing I will say for everybody saying, “Oh, they should have went to Sam Darnold, Aaron Rogers, Daniel Jones.” Yeah, we probably would have been better in September, maybe even October, maybe even November, but this team is sick of just winning regular season games. They want to go win playoff games and they view JJ McCarthy gives their ceiling, you know, or that gives them the highest ceiling to reach their max potential as a team and you’re hoping once November, December rolls around and JJ is kind of going through this whole process here, he is able to, you know, just work out those, you know, growing pains and hopefully he’s playing some good football. But if if Kevin Oconor just doesn’t trust JJ like to just perform that type of offense and to execute, then we got some serious problems on our hands. But I do want to say thank you guys so much. Prize Pick, it’s good to be right now. Obviously, a lot of negativity in the Vikings world this morning, but I do want to shine some light on some positives and it’s the whole defense. The defense deserves a ton of praise for what they did last night. You’re going against a Falcons offense that has all types of playmakers. Drake London, Bejian Robinson, who also Bejan looked like the best running back in the league league yesterday. But for yesterday’s performance, I don’t blame the defense one bit. And you think about everything they were working they had working against them. Number one short week, you lost your, you know, green dot guy and Blake Cashman. You lost that perfect Swiss Army knife for the defense and Andrew Van Ginkle. You didn’t have that veteran and that leader on the back end in Harrison Smith. And they still gave you every single chance to go and win that football game. And you know, a lot of questions right now. Can the Vikings like is the run defense an issue? Like you traded Harrison Phillips. Is stopping the run gonna be a problem? I don’t think so. The Falcons running all over the Vikings, in my opinion, was more about Bejian Robinson and the Vikings offense having zero ability to sustain drives. I can think about that defense. I mean, the Vikings, fun fact, they have ran the least amount of plays in the NFL so far. They’re averaging 47 and a half plays per game, which that means the defense is on the field a whole lot. Short week, got a lot of injuries, and you were still able to have a pretty damn good performance. It’s like was it like an A+ Brian Flores special? No. But if I had to grade the defense still B+, A minus, like you gave your offense all types of chances to win that game. Also, the offense turning the ball over, you put them on a short field multiple times. I mean, the fact and also that last running touchdown, they just let them walk in the end zone. Like this defense necessarily didn’t give up a touchdown yesterday when they were really trying to. and it’s just uh you know concerning offensively that like you’re having this great defensive performance for the first two weeks and this offense can’t help you out at all. So, I’m not really too concerned about the run defense. I think once they get more support offensively, this defense will really start humming. So, I just want to give a massive shout out to those guys up front. Um I thought they played a hell of a game yesterday. And, you know, lastly here, everything is okay. Um, you know, obviously getting off the watch party yesterday and, you know, leaving the office, I was uh ex extremely disappointed, but the sun came up today. Everything’s all right. And in my opinion, this fan base needed to be humbled a little bit. And I needed to be humbled a little bit because heading into this game, even when the Vikings were down 15 to six in the fourth quarter, I was still thinking they were going to win that football game. And there was no reason for me to believe that. This was a typical Vikings emotional letdown spot. That’s been their calling card. You have an emotional win. The next week they struggle. I wish I did a better job of sniffing that out. But I also say this. I love this feeling. You know, nobody believes in the Vikings. Nobody believes in the quarterback. People think this is just going to be a throwaway year. People are already, you know, taking victory laps saying the Vikings made the wrong decision. Should have brought back Darnold. They should have signed Rogers. Like I love this feeling. Like you’re on a prime time stage and for seven of those eight quarters, JJ McCarthy was horrible. Nobody’s going to believe in this guy. Even if he has a great next per or a great next three performances, like people will still be out on this team. So, I love this feeling. You know, it stinks right now, but hopefully they can bounce back, make something happen. You’re going to learn from this. And again, this team is addicted to the process. This is a part of the process. Everybody wants to have that young quarterback and watch him develop until it’s time to actually watch him develop. Until it’s time to actually watch him go through the growing pains. It hasn’t been good. It will 100% get better. There’s no doubt in my mind that probably these first two weeks are the worst JJ will see. I wholeheartedly believe that this guy’s a sicko. This guy will do everything he can to get the most out of him. And whatever that ceiling is, I’ve been saying it, he will reach that ceiling. It’s just we just need to be patient and it’s tough because us fans, we view this as a loaded team, a loaded coaching staff. We think they can win a lot of games this year. It’s going to take some time with the quarterback. He’s 22 years old. Just be patient and enjoy this feeling because we haven’t had this feeling in a while. Like, we’ve lost to three football teams the last two years. You lost the Lions twice last year and the Rams twice. You beat everybody else and now this year you lose to the Falcons. I think just his fan base need to get humbled a little bit and you got to live in this bad feeling for the next week and hopefully you can go write your wrongs this Sunday against the Bengals with a little Jake Browning revenge game coming to the US Bank. 1. This wasn’t on McCarthy koc playcalling is trash he needs to go if it starts this way next week fire him mid game. Injuries are killing us also. We will bounce back next week also that o libe hopefully gets better once Darrisaw comes back. McCarthy will have bad games and good games but In the end it will help him.

  2. I think our intensity needs to increase. last year we were dominant out the gate and that made it tough on teams. this year were coming out like were half a*sing it in practice.

  3. My biggest concern is that JJ McCarthy will not play against the Bengals, he has a sprained ankle! There is now a lingering possibility that JJ could lose his job! That's why they should have kept Daniel Jones!

  4. Half of the players injured will return next game with Wentz, if he’s plays well fans will want him to stay as QB1, but unless he’s godlike JJM will return if healthy, Wentz won’t win us the Super Bowl most likely so KOC will want to stick with his guy, Darrisaw and Addison should boost the offense.

  5. My concern is not with jj at all im still all in for this season I am even going too my first vikings game on Christmas.. let's go vikrs skol!! He is learning he will adjust use his legs more i believe in him 100% and the whole vikings franchise

  6. I am concerned that McCarthy is being treated like a kid by some. He is a grown men that has played football since he was growing up. I understand giving him a few weeks to adjust to NFL level, but what we saw vs. Falcons and most of the game vs. Bears is really concerning. He needs to self-reflect on this huge opportunity that Vikings are giving him and make a dramatic improvement quickly.

  7. Stumbled onto this podcast. Who is this idiot? He says we drafted McCarthy as a developmental quarterback. Are you kidding me? We drafted him 11th in the first round. He’s supposed to be a plug-and 3:04 play quarterback. I hate to say it, but I predicted all of this. I said he is smaller than you think and he’s fragile. I said he’d be injured by week three or four. And now he is. I said he was like Mitch Trubisky. I was wrong there. He’s just like Josh Freeman.

  8. Peyton Manning's 1st year in 1998 with the Indianapolis Colts–Record: 3-13; Completions: 326; Attempts: 575; Yards: 3,739; Touchdowns: 26; Interceptions: 28. I think he worked out the kinks just fine. JJ has the skill and the mindset. I believe he will be with us for a longtime as long as he can stay healthy. SKOL!!

  9. This is on KOC. This is now 4 straight prime time games in which he fails to adjust his game plan when it’s clear his o line is struggling. Not to mention the lack of depth because kwesi is so bad with the draft.

  10. Gonna take time and more then a few games! Like all the other great QBs they took time to develop, like years! So you won't really know for some time if it was a terrible choice! Look up QBs that had a bad first season and you will be amazed on the names you see!
    Have patience and faith!
    💜SKOL💜

  11. I believe Carson Wentz is a blessing in disguise. He's been around for years and has had success. McCarthy is not ready for the stage he's on. Every team knows now if you bring pressure he won't be able to handle it. I've been throwing footballs and baseballs for 40 years. He's unsure throwing the ball to high or to low instead of it being free flowing. He's trying to telegraph the throws instead of just using instincts. When your unsure of yourself you get those high and low throws

  12. the biggest mistake the SKOL groupies did last week was to put JJ whatshisname in the HOF after one quarter of one game… be realistic, He has potential to be a very good QB but now is not his time
