Would’ve avoided the disastrous Kenny Pickett pick, gotten our franchise QB, and reclaimed most wins in the Browns’ stadium after Mayfield passed Big Ben.
I think it will go down as one of the major missed opportunities in franchise history.
Me too
Wouldn’t even had to trade. He was FA when he signed with the bucs
I really wanted to sign Baker but chances are he still might not be what he is today because our coaching and development is so bad.
I said the same thing when Cleveland ran him out of town. Huge missed opportunity.
We also passed on drafting Lamar so we could draft Terrell Edmunds. We just can’t get out of our own way.
Baker wouldn’t save this team. It would be just like the Kenny, Russ and possibly Rodgers eras. The team isn’t good enough to win with an ok QB. In their current state they’d need a truly generational talent.
We have a chance to get a real gunner in the next draft if our guys are ready to trade.
This is not meant to be a criticism of Baker, but he takes a lot of risks in his game. That’s part of what makes him great. However, it makes me think that Tomlin would have given him the Justin Fielfs treatment and he probably doesn’t reach his current level in Pittsburgh instead of Tampa Bay.
They have also consistently surrounded him with a great supporting cast of pass catching talent and young, innovative coordinators.
I said the same in my football text chain.
I wanted him bad. Dude is a dog and Brownies can’t evaluate talent.
If we traded for him three years ago, he would have been running Matt Canada’s offense unfortunately
Matt Canada and Mike Tomlin probably would have destroyed his career.
The Steelers signed Mitch Trubisky instead of Baker Mayfield.
A former number one overall pick, with a chip on his shoulder, that would have gotten a chance to play his former team twice a year.
Nope. Baker developed every year. We would’ve broken him until he couldn’t do anything
So he could experience playing behind a horrible line?
No one knew Baker would turn his career around. Yeah it’s wishful thinking but no one here wanted him at the time.
The Steelers have done very very very few things right since the loss to NE in the AFC championship (9 seasons ago).
I like and respect Mike tomlin. But shit, it’s long overdue. We have to move on. He’s legitimately made mediocrity the Steeler way. Never good enough to win a bowl, never bad enough to be a shitty team. Just slightly above average year after year. What good is that anymore? I just don’t see it changing. It’s been a long time since I felt the Steelers were a well coached team. I can’t help but feel the outside world/national sports media will begin to take notice. It’s a pattern at this point.
Tomlin is very much involved with all aspects. Drafting, trades, game plans, game management, etc. Our drafts of late have been abysmal. Couldn’t help but feel signingTJ to that big deal wasn’t smart. Trading Pickens was dumb. They’re constantly out coached and seem to have no game plan, or the ability to make in game adjustments. I’m just over it. Goodnight folks
3 years ago we did not have the team that would allow Baker to show out the way he is now, hell we still dont lmao
The coaching staff would have found a way to minimize his talent
That was a VERY fun watch. Nothing hits quite like a game winning drive
Could baker have thrived with us tho? We don’t have a Mike Evans like receiver. We haven’t in a while.
Baker baker touch down maker on the stihlers would be a dream come true.
All of my kids know horns down. I almost bought a baker browns jersey. Glad I didn’t. Browns is the browns.
Baker is good but he’s in the perfect system to succeed, similar to how Darnold was with the Vikings. Every single throw in this drive is open, he’s had a ton of weapons with the bucs. Also, We need to cut some slack on the Pickett pick. The past 5 years have been full of busts/underperforming players. The last 4 drafts (Not including 2025 draft/season due to low sample size), there have been 4 qbs over-performed/performed at a high level: Stroud, JD5, Nix, and Purdy.
Imagine spending the #1 pick on Bryce Young and getting zero signs of player growth.
Imagine being a bears fan right now lol.
YOU CANNOT PREDICT THE FUTURE.
Let’s be honest, we would’ve squandered him more than likely. It’s not like we’ve had the greatest O-line or coordinators the past few years.
Offensive line would get him killed too
I’m not sure he would have been good here. This scheme just isn’t working right.
The year Baker was a free agent the Steelers had Kenny Pickett going into Year 2 and weren’t in the market for a QB.
It wouldn’t matter cause we have the same coaching staff
We could’ve signed him. We also could’ve drafted guys like Lamar or Hurts but to be honest those players don’t become who they are playing for us. Playing under Canada and with our offense in general would’ve been horrible but our player development in general just sucks.
Wouldn’t matter, tomlin game plan (or lack of) would ruin the very best QB. The standard is the standard and the standard is the same old shit!!
He got dropped by two other teams after finding a home in Tampa might just be a match made in heaven you never know he might’ve sucked here
He was a free agent, would have been a signing but I agree.
He’d still be garbage under Mike Tomlin.
Cleveland never would’ve traded him to us for anything reasonable. Our best bet would’ve been to grab him after the Panthers cut him but everyone was still holding out hope that Pickett would develop. If things had gone sour for him in Cleveland a year earlier or a year later we might’ve gotten him. Timing was just bad

Happy for Mayfield.
Would’ve been a perfect culture fit. Damn shame
This is why I hate sports fans, recency bias is insane. In the 5 games he played in 2022, Baker was 2nd to last in QBR while filing in for Stafford on a Superbowl defending team. He sucked, [he was the 36th PFF graded QB. ](https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-2022-nfl-quarterback-rankings-and-tiers)[The bucs reddit were not really thrilled when he became QB1, a lot of people that Kyle Trask could of won the job. LMFAOOO](https://www.reddit.com/r/buccaneers/comments/15y836r/official_baker_mayfield_is_qb1/). Hindsight is 20/20…

Imagine tanking for Trevor Lawrence, who looked like [the next Peyton Manning](https://www.nfl.com/news/back-2-campus/once-in-a-generation-is-trevor-lawrence-nfl-s-next-big-thing), and still waiting for him to take the next step.
