🔴LIVE 🔴Toronto Blue Jays VS Tampa Bay Rays /September 15/Mlb Envivo /MLB THE SHOW 25
Next, please welcome your Tampa Bay Rays. All right, just about set to go. And today on the hill, Adrien Hower and Singi, we were talking earlier about how he’s doing a great job navigating through tough spots. I’ve just been so impressed with when it seems like there’s more pressure, he’s more calm and settles in. He’s done an incredible job with runners in scoring position. Most guys, they get a little tight, they start to aim the baseball, but for some reason he gets looser, the ball comes out of his hand with more life, and he’s able to wiggle off the hook of, you know, tough situations and get his team back in the dugout. Ball one there. Well, second pitch of this game and already getting squeezed a little bit. Now a check swing, but he held up. Next offering is fouled back. Adrien Adrien Adrien that’s inside that one misses. So a lead off walk a breaking ball in that 3-2 count kind of tells you that that’s the pitch he has the most confidence in right now. Just couldn’t find the strike zone. Davis Schneider next up for the Blue Jays. Swung on. Belted way back there. Gone. He’ll touch them all. And just like that, they’re out front. It’s two nothing. He only needed one swing to square it up. Not wasting any time in that at bat. Boo. Aggressive and it paid off. That one was a hanger and pitchers typically don’t get away with making a mistake like that. And right there, he made him pay. Here’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He’s been on fire at the dish lately. Batting average this month over 400. On its way to the corner and that drops foul. Heart of the order coming through now. And with one home run already in this inning, they’re definitely looking to do some more damage. I love the fact that we’ve seen both Vladimir Guerrero and Vlatty Jr. win the home run derby. They’re the first fatherson duo to ever win it. Vlatty back in 2007 and Vlatty Jr. in 2023, even though his dad didn’t give him any advice for the event other than to go out there and hit home runs. Swang and a miss. Struck him out and that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Oh, that slider down and away. It’s just kind of a slow death with two strikes you’re looking to protect and halfway to the plate. You know you’ve committed and you know you’re going to have no chance of touching it. Tell you what, sometimes you just have to tip your cap. And first offering is fouled off. One down. Base is empty. One ball. One strike. Ripped on the ground to second. Lao sends it to first and two away. Now let’s take a look at the lineup for the Blue Jays. One guy leading the way offensively for this club right now, George Springer. And Boo, he’s their team leader in home runs. So, you know, the pitchers on that other side, man. They took a lot of time preparing for him in that pregame meeting. You know, he’s got a lot of pop and it’s real pop. It’s not fluky at all. He can absolutely change the outlook of a game very quickly. So, watch out when he steps in. This one smoked out to left and that’s a base hit. So a two out knock keeps the inning alive. Well, I’m not saying that play was easy, but it was harder than it needed to be thanks to the bad jump. Those small moments can be costly. And now it’s Daltton Vo. Seems like he’s making contact with everything lately. Batting over 300 so far this month. First pitch doesn’t find the zone. He’s given up a couple of runs, but the pitch count really not as high as you would think. Might be able to get through this one under 25 pitches. Two outs. Yeah, that’s fouled off. [Music] in the air. Left field down the line. Fair ball. And that’s a two out double. Backto back base hits. Kind of a risky pitch coming inside with the breaking ball like that. You have to bury it. Otherwise, it’s not too difficult to get the bat to it like he did that time. So, two on with two away. Here’s the second baseman, Ernie Clement. Really strong hitting performance recently. Can make it a fivegame hitting streak with a knock in this one. And a foul ball. Two on, two outs. Swaying and a miss. Struck him out. Good job at damage control right there. The Jays get a pair on this homer and it’s two zip. Back here with my pal Singi and today’s starting pitcher Shane Bieber. And Chris, pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him. Yeah. And you don’t want to be too quick to say that he can’t pitch on the road. Sometimes, you know, it’s just a matter of luck. It’s not having a field difference between the bullpin mound to the mound out there on the playing field. Don’t know what it is, but I know this. He’s got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home. So, we’ll see what he’s able to do in this one. Diaz jumps out of the way of ball one. Well, after scoring runs, this is where you’re looking for that shutdown inning. Get that hot team back in there to swing the bats. Right through there for a strike. Back-to-back fast balls in. That last one called for a strike. Probably go away, but look for him to come back in there to try to finish you off. Next pitch is outside. Fast ball for a strike. Pitch misses there. Three balls, two strikes. Really good take, especially with two strikes. Swang and a ball lifted in the air and George makes the grab. One up, one down. All right, let’s take a look at the Rays lineup. A really frustrating showing for them in their last game. Lots of traffic on the bases, but they left a ton of runners on base. Couldn’t cash in their chances. Chris, they had plenty of chances. There’s nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively. They just did a poor job converting in those situations. You have to figure out what’s your plan going to be. Maybe watch some tape from the last game, make the adjustments. So, if you get those opportunities in this one, you’ve got a much better chance of scoring some runs. Bieber, not a big strikeout guy, but still very effective as far as starting pitchers go. One of those guys that involves the defense and really gets him involved in the action. Breaking ball misses down and away. He moves the ball around all the quadrants of the strike zone and will add and subtract velocity. And because of that, he gets the weak contact. It’s all about missing the barrel of the bat. One out, base is empty. Next offering is down low. It seems like this type of guy is kind of a dying breed nowadays. Well, exactly. When teams are looking for high velocity, high strikeout rates, guy like this doesn’t necessarily do that. So, in order to really appreciate how good he is, you have to see him because if you’re just looking at a stat sheet, you might overlook him. Yeah, there’s ball four. It’s not easy laying off that pitch. It’s designed to fool you, but he just wasn’t fooled at all. La at the plate. Definitely scuffling at the dish lately. Barely hitting over the Mendoza line this month. There’s a strike. Camo stands at first with one out. And there’s the strike. Let’s see if he’s willing to use the whole field right here. Definitely pounding him away. [Applause] And that one missing inside. A sharp slider. See if he can go upstairs a little bit. Make sure you miss up and out of the zone since you’re heading the count one two. Don’t miss in the zone cuz that’s where you get hurt. [Music] Come on, Brandon. All right, Brandon in the dirt. Tag save at second and good hustle to move up. That’s a wild pitch. Well, that right there erases the chance at the inning. Ending double play. So, good job on the bases to move up on the wild pitch. Changes the outlook of the inning in a pretty big way. One out and a runner at second and it remains two and two. [Music] Here we go. Ray, that one just misses. Recognized that change up right out of the hand. Just spit on it. [Applause] And ball four to a board. I don’t think he really wanted to pitch to him right there anyhow. So digging in Christopher Morell. Pitch misses there. Ball one. All right. Two on, one out. Swinging a foul out of play. Instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended, tied him up a little bit. Slightly up, slightly in. The one-1 is fouled off. You know, he can move the ball around, add and subtract, get some weak contact at times, so you don’t worry as much about him in this situation. Very capable of getting a ground ball and getting out of this little jam. Makes the grab and there’s two gone. Batting fifth, catcher, Nick Forz. Here’s the catcher, Nick Forez. I’m curious how he decides to attack on the mound. This guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year. That misses the zone. One and0. And there’s a ball. Could be some action here on this next pitch. Couple runners on. Probably a challenge pitch coming. Two on, two outs, and another ball. Good pitchers make pitches in big situations. And right here with a middle of the order hit her up, runner in scoring position, he’s got to find a way to throw a quality strike. Let’s go. Two aboard, two outs. [Music] That one finds the zone. Three and two now. And boy, that was the pitch. 3-1. You want to be really aggressive on the fast ball and that’ll load the bases. Well, the stage has been set for this offense booth. It’s all about creating opportunities and this is one of them right here. So, they’re all loaded up. Josh Low will hit next. He’s been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season. So, they’ll have to be extra careful in this matchup. Springer there makes the catch and that will end the inning and the Rays leave them loaded. They trail it here two nothing and we’re back. New inning getting started now. The left fielder Joey Lerido. Lerido 25 years old and he was drafted in the seventh round in 2021. Seymour and he handles it himself for the out. Batting ninth short stop Andre Jimenez. Here’s Andre Jimenez singing he’s never finished the season with more stolen bases in his entire career. And that is downstairs and it’s one and0. Next offering is fouled back. One down. Base is empty. That one’s in there. And the count. One and two. One ball. Swing and a popup. Foul territory for the catcher. Puts it away for the out. Now batting right fielder George Springer. Back to the top of the lineup and the batter is George Springer. Worked a walk in his first trip to the plate and takes low for ball one. That one is absolutely belted and that ball is out of here. He made him pay for that one. Home run number 30 on the year. And they tack one on the board. It’s three nothing. He absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer. And you can see that’s what he expects of himself at bat after at bat. He’s that confident. Chris, that ball came out hot. So, let’s see what Stackcast has to say. Yeah, it really did. Boog. 111 mph off the bat and a really nice launch angle as well. Just a beautiful swing from start to finish. And now for the Jays, Davis Schneider. He’s already homerred here in this one. That’s down and in. Two down. Doon and there’s a foul ball. I wouldn’t throw him another breaking ball. Try to go again with a fast ball. Slightly elevated. He just having a hard time catching up. Next pitch misses. Two and one. Two down. Base is empty, but one run across here in the top of the second. Two-1 pitch is in there and the count is even and that’s in the dirt. He should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three-hole hitter coming up if he’s walked. No question about this one. It’s out of here. They do it again. Backto back homers. his second home run of the game and they add to the lead. It’s 4 nothing. He absolutely crushed that one. No doubt about that one, Boo. We knew it wasn’t coming back. Backto back jacks and this club is fired up right now, Boog. I mean, this is the kind of thing where you really start to notice hitters in a lineup feeding off each other and the collective confidence just continues to grow. Two out, space is empty. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. now that misses the zone and that is ball one. Two outs. Base is empty. That’s a strike. Dangerous spot for that slider right there. Didn’t seem to quite finish out front and get that sharp break. Tell you what, he doesn’t want to throw that pitch again. swings and misses. One and two. Good late sink on that fast ball out of the hand. Looks so good. And then by the time he gets in the hitting zone, hard to get the barrel to it. Morell moving under this one. Makes the play and it’s out number three. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now a four nothing ball game. Major League Baseball is on the show. Bottom half of inning number two. Here’s the center fielder, Everson Pereira. Pereira. Bieber back to work in for a strike. Four and one. Was good pitch there. Really had some run and finished. Little up and just on the edge. And that’s one of those if you swing at it. He had a broken bat as you jog back to the dugout. Making the calls behind the plate in this one is Woody Keller. Yeah. And Woody does a pretty good job back there, Boo. He’s got a pretty fair strike zone most of the time. Maybe some inconsistency here or there, but usually he’s back there doing a solid job. Next offering misses. Ball one. Good eye right there. Great job of laying off those pitches down in the zone to even the count up at two and two. Such a better feeling for the hitter. Still two and two after the foul ball. Keeps the atbat going with a foul ball. That wasn’t an easy pitch to hit. It’s much easier to do damage against mistakes, but that’s not what that pitch was. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. He came out of his mechanics there. Typically likes to shoot the ball the other way, but that time little anxious. So, next to the plate for Tampa Bay, Carson Williams. And the first pitch misses for ball one. Get on the ground to short. Oh, great stop to first. Nicely done for the hour. batting ninth first baseman Bobby. That was an impressive diving stop. Singy, let’s dive into the numbers. Statcast assemble. Yeah, Boo. A really good effort just to get his glove to the ball. He found a way to do it and just produce a strong throw as well. So, that right there is a great play all the way around. Just really smooth. Two down, base is empty. Bobby Seymour next to hit for the Rays. Fast ball for a strike. Knee high. That’s in for a strike. That one the other way. to first and it’s a one, two, three inning. Rays held in check here. They trail it here 4 nothing. And welcome back to the ballpark. Top half of the third inning. And now here is Addison Barger. Swing it. A ball driven out to center. That one’s carrying pulls it in on the warning track. Now batting catcher Alejandro Kirk. And here’s the catcher Alejandro Kirk. One for one with a single so far. This guy one of the best defensive catchers going. When you talk about framing, the ability to block, catch and throw, he is at the top of the game and that’s too high. Really good athlete and many times we talk about, you know, the feet of infielders. This catcher as well, really quick feet. He’s able to recognize the pitch, see the trajectory, and get into a spot where he can block those balls and keep them from going to the back stop. That one called just inside, I think, and on the mound. He’s trying to get a little bit of an explanation. Doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it though, but he clearly thought it clipped the corner. Really impressive with the way he frames, the way that he sets it up because sometimes those pitches are off the plate, but because he sets up and presents it so well, he still strikes for his pitcher. And Chris, beyond the fact that he’s so incredible defensively, he also can swing the stick. Now, this is in the air down the line. Nobody can get there. And it’s a foul ball. Stays alive. Line drive. He’s got it. And there’s two away. That swing right there tells me he’s seeing the ball pretty well. I know it didn’t produce a hit, but he made solid contact. And that’s all you’re looking to do anytime you’re at the plate. Two outs, space is empty. And now the center fielder, Dalton Vo doubled in his first AB. Missed with a change up. Ball one and downstairs. Two count. Great hitter at the dish. If you’re going to miss, you’ve got to miss outside the zone. You miss inside the strike zone, you’ll be asking the umpire for a new baseball. That one’s spoiled. And the count now two and one. Two outs. [Applause] swing and a ground ball base hit right field and that keeps the inning alive. Wasting no time. He’s two for two now on the night and just a triple and home run away from the cycle. Seriously, we’re starting with this already. Ernie Clement next up for the Blue Jays. Three pitch strikeout last time up. Got to put up more of a fight in this one. Popped up foul territory behind the plate. Forez makes the grab and that is that. Blue Jays held in check, but they lead it four to nothing. Back now in Tampa Bay. Bottom of the inning. Now it’s the DH Yandi Diaz. He’s sitting on 99 career homers. We’ll see if this is the moment to notch number 100. Well, these Rays showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one. They’ve worked three walks already, so that proves they’re not anxious up there. They’re sticking to their game plan and it’s working. Close but called a ball. Two and one. good spot there, but didn’t get the strike at the knees and doesn’t seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the umpire strike zone on the ground right side and foul ball. Swings and misses. struck him out. Oh, that slider was way out of the zone. And for me, it just comes down to not seeing the pitch out of the hand, not tracking into the zone. And then also being a little bit anxious, not confident in your two strike approach. And so when a guy’s in that position, you get him to commit early and a lot of times you get the swing and miss as you did right there. Camo the next to hit takes outside. Next pitch way upstairs. That’s a strike and it’s fouled away. One down. Base is empty. Spoils that one. And it remains two and two. Slider misses outside outside and that is ball four. Boo. If I were him, I’d be nibbling around the plate as well. I mean, this guy’s just capable of hitting pitches outside of the zone and driving them a long way. And now it’s Brandon Laauo. He reached out to walk his first time. And that gets the inside corner for a strike. Camero leads off first with one away. That one’s upstairs. Ball one. Way to lay off that fast ball up right there. You’re looking for something you see well that you can handle, but you also have to keep the discipline so that you’re not popping up pitches that are just a little too high. Two strike. the one two swing and a miss and he’s down on strikes and he’s registered three Ks in this one. And next will be the cleanup hitter Christopher Morell fly to center his first time. Morel in there for strike one. swing and a miss. He finds himself in a tough situation early. Just got to try to simplify it. Take a knock the other way if you can. And now one and two. That’s a ball. Two strikes. Got him looking. That’s a strikeout. One left for Tampa. They’re on the short end of a four nothing score. Back here at Tropicana Field, all set for the start of the inning. And now for the Jays, Joey Lrafido and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter. Bullpen movement for the Rays. Ian Seymour appears to be getting loose. Szer getting loose as well. And now the count is even. Well, he hasn’t quite settled in out there. Four runs in three innings. He’s going to have to have some quick one, two, three innings to pitch deep into this ball game. Sneaks through base head and the leadoff man aboard. Now batting shortstop Andres Jimenez. And next for Toronto, Andres Jimenez. Hit on the ground up the middle. That’s a base hit. Rudder stops at second and the first two reach to start the inning. Now batting right. Here comes the skipper out of the dugout and he’s ready to make the move. Adrien Howser won’t go any further. And this is one he’d like to forget. Back with a new arm after this. Rays, they go to the bullpen. Number 24. He’s pitching on two days rest. And it’ll be George Springer to step to the plate. He’s already homered in this game. Turn swinging a foul straight back. That one missed. First and second, no outs. Top half of inning number four. Swang and a highf fly ball hit the air left center field. This one’s got a chance and that one is out of here. Another homer. He’s done it again. His second homer of the game. And they tack on three. It’s 7 nothing. That’s their fourth home run of the game. They can’t stop. And they won’t stop hitting home runs in this one. Boo. They’re clearly feeding off of each other at the dish. They thought he could blow a high fast ball by him, but he was ready for it. Look at how quickly he jumped on that pitch. Now it’s the Toronto designated hitter, Davis Schneider. That one in there across the letters. and a foul ball. The real threats are coming up. Already giving up a home run in this inning. He’s going to really have to bear down. And they’ll do it again. Next offering upstairs. One ball. Swing. And this one’s bounced to the ground. Lao sends it to first. That’s the first out in the top of the fourth. Now batting the first Vladimir. And here’s the first baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Bowl for two in this one. And that’s in there at the knees. That one laced to center in a base hit. So a man aboard now with one away. Now batting third base Addison Barer. So up next Addison Barger. And the first pitch misses for ball one. swing and a ground ball up the middle. That’s a base hit. Guerrero around second headed for third to third. Tag. Got him. Hey, as a former center fielder, I’m feeling pretty good right now. That’s an excellent job by this guy to come up throwing and deliver a strike to third base. Now for the offense, that’s a tough one to swallow because you never want to lose a runner in scoring position by making an out at third base. So man aboard. Here’s the Toronto catcher Alejandro Kirk. Softly in the air down the line and foul ball. Barker leads off first with two down to the inning. fought off foul and a foul ball. He stays alive. Check swing on an 02 appeal to first and he went around. Not an easy call there, but that puts an end to the inning. So they get three runs, five hits, no errors, and a runner left. And midway in the fourth, Blue Jays seven, the Rays nothing. And we’re back. And now it’s going to be Nick Forez. Clearly down in this ball game. And you can’t look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing. It’s got to come one at bat at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch. Make that guy on the mound work to get you out. Just missed. He hasn’t wanted to challenge him. Both of those pitches off the plate away. Don’t expect anything down the heart of the plate. You may just have to be patient and take your walk here. Top of the zone and it’s called a strike. And it’s even up. Knocks that one away and we’ll do it again. Foul ball. Another 2-2 upcoming. fans another and that’s three straight strikeouts. Oh, nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there. Just a low 90s fast ball and I’m not sure he was trying to challenge him, but that’s pretty much what happened. Very hitable location, but he found a way to just get it by him. popped up. Jimenez makes the grab. Two down. Up next for the Rays. Center fielder. Two down. Base is empty. Now a chance for Everson Pereira. He’s 0 for one. And a first pitch fastball is in for a strike. swaying and a ball popped in the air. Pulls it down and he makes the catch. And that is the third out of the inning. Rays go in order. One, two, three. Not going their way. It’s 7 nothing. Ready now for the fifth inning. Here’s the center fielder, Dalton Varo. Come on. Vo measures 5’8 in 28 years old and he’s one of the few players in Major League Baseball born in Wisconsin. Hit well right field way back and gone. Are you kidding me? And they tack on to their lead. It’s 8 nothing. That’s their fifth homer of the game. Man, they’re all getting into the action. It’s starting to feel like a home run derby up here. Just an excellent swing all the way around. And it had that sound coming off the bat that gets everyone’s attention. Got a pitch to drive. Short to the baseball. Squared it up and the backspin carried it out of here. Now it’s the second baseman Ernie Clement. And that gets the top of the zone for a strike. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in. And we’re at the top of the fifth. Outside with a breaking ball. Got him. And that’s the first out. Nice recovery after giving up the homer. Well, just excellent location on that inside fast ball. Really locked him up. And as a hitter, it’s not typically what you’re looking for. You’re trying to protect away and then in so you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes. It’s hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it would be called a ball, but either way, that’s a really nice pitch. Lerido the next to hit takes ball one. One out single. He was all over that one. Just a cookie down the middle. I mean, those are the ones you dream about. The ones in the cage you’re just hoping you get in the ball game. Right down the middle. Not a whole lot of velocity. Right on top of it. And the batter now, Andres Jimenez right through there for a strike. Lrafitoido the runner at first with one gone in the inning and that’s outside. One ball, one strike. [Music] A short stop takes a ball. And a big swing and a miss. in the air on the infield. Williams makes the grab. Two down. Now batting right fielder George Springer. Back to the leadoff spot in the Blue Jays lineup. Now it’s the right fielder George Springer. Here we go now. Pickoff throw. Ow. They got him. And that will end the inning. Toronto picks up one on this homer. It’s now an 8 nothing game. You’re dialed into the show. And welcome back to the ballpark. John Shabi with my buddy Chris Singleton. set to get us started. Bottom five, Carson Williams. Bieber back to work and ball one. Well, every pitcher wants a run support and having a lead is nice, but it can be challenging for some pitchers. I think keeping the mindset to it. Highf fly ball pretty well struck out towards right center. That one hops against the fence. Safe at second with a leadoff double. Couldn’t have timed it up any better than that. Man, that feels so good to shoot an absolute bolt the opposite way. Split the gap and know that you’ve got extra bases right off the bat. That’s the kind of thing hitters dream about when they’re falling asleep at night. So, a man aboard now up for Tampa Bay. Bobby Seymour grounded out his first time. Highf fly ball out towards left field. Way back there. And that one is out of here. So, he blasts one out the other way. His second of the year. It’s 8-2. They wasted no time in that at bat. Swinging at the first pitch and he punished it. [Applause] Boo. I wasn’t sure he hit that one as hard as he needed to to get it out of here, but it had just enough behind it for the homer. What an attempt at the wall, though. He really gave a terrific effort to try and bring that one back. Diaz in the box here. Lets that one go for a ball. Diaz needs just one more homer to reach 100 in the big leagues. Yeah. And making it to a 100 homers would be quite the career accomplishment for him. Out of the more than 20,000 players to take an at bat in the majors, less than 5% have ever hit 100 dingers. Nobody out with a pair of runs across in the frame. Last half of inning number five. That one found hard the other way. Swings through it for the K. tosses to first and that’s the first out in the bottom of the fifth. Here’s the third baseman, Junior Camero. He has, as they like to say, let me guess, Boo, light tower power. That’s right. And first off is fouled off. So critical to keep an eye on the pitch count this time of the year. Guys can start to run on fumes a little bit. Mechanics. This one swung on and hit well way back there and out of here. An absolute smash to left. It’s their second home run of the inning. It’s 83. [Applause] Looks like this guy was looking out over the plate, but he was ready to turn on the inside. Fast ball. So direct to the pitch. Absolutely blasted out of this ballpark. One down. Brandon Laauo digs in now. He is struck out and he is walked. That pitch gets the inside corner. That’s strike one. Still only one out here in the inning. That one hammered left field. This one’s got a chance. Makes the catch. Gliding onto the warning track. Man, Boo, I love watching an outfielder take on the wall to make that play. And it’s a lot easier to watch from up here because That can be painful in the end. You know the wall’s coming up on you quickly, so you have to maintain concentration in able to make that catch and hold on to it after contact. Highf fly ball right field and George makes the grab and that is that. But two round tripers in this inning. The long ball was working. It’s now 83. Back after this on the show. Here’s George Springer to start it off. And the way he’s going in this one, we’ve been waiting for his spot to come around again. All right, listen everyone. Stop what you’re doing right now. This guy’s got two home runs already. Now he’s going for number three. That one ripped left field and that is gone. And he’s gone yard again. That’s his third home run of the game. It’s 93. Singi. The ball is jumping off his bat. Yes, it is. Tons of loud contact. Man, it’s been impressive. He’s putting on quite the show at the dish here in this one. And he’s just so locked in with this swing and he’s just not missing right now. A three homer game, man. It’s so special. And I tell you what, it’s a lot of fun watching him pull it off as well. Manager out of the dugout and he’s going to make a change. Number 24 done for the night and the home run really bit him today as he exits on the hook for the loss. New arm coming on after the break. Now on the mound for the Rays, Kevin Kelly. Well, I got to think he probably has a little extra in the tank facing his former team. And there’s not a player in the league that doesn’t get a little extra motivation when he plays against his old squad. And next is the designated hitter Davis Schneider. That one off the mark. One and0. And a sweeper misses for a ball. Meanwhile, activity in the bullpen. Ian Seymour warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Sulzer warming up as well. two and that one almost got him. Straighten him up a little bit. So definitely a little wild right out of the gate. Well, it can be a little tough coming from the bullpin mound to this mound, but you’ve got to find a way to get ahead in the count quickly. He hasn’t. We’ll see how this at bat turns out. And that one off the inside edge. He walked him. He did not take the bat off his shoulder the entire at bats. Man at first, nobody out. And now the first baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. One for three. That one misses. That’s five straight. After five straight balls to start this inning, this hitter might have the green light, but it’s going to be one pitch in one location if he’s going to swing. Swang at a highf fly ball. Well struck. Low drop step going back onto the track and he makes the catch. Now batting third baseman Addison Barer. So up next for Toronto Addison Barger. Sing. You talk about a guy that has all the skills. The range is really good, but the arm just stands out and he makes all the plays inside. And that’s ball one. And because of that big power arm, he’s able to play a little bit deeper, make throws from the outfield grass all the way across the diamond. And still Ian Seymour, ready or not, in the game now after the injury. Well, he’s been excellent against left-handed hitters this year, and that’s his first test. This looks like a good move to the pin in terms of the matchup. ripped on a line. He won’t get there. That should be extra bases. Couple of hits in a row for him here. Solid swing from start to end. On time with everything. Really good balance. Nice extension and he met it out front for the line drive knock. Second and third. One gone. And now the catcher comes up to him. Alejandro Kirk just missed. [Applause] That one finds the zone and the count even at one. Fouled off. He was late. Schneider on third. Barger at second with one away. cuts on it and misses. That’s a strike out. Chase the fast up the ladder for strike three. Definitely made him chase a little bit out of the zone right there. I don’t think that’s a strike if he takes it. Pretty textbook pitching. Get ahead in the count. Get the guy in the box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn’t have much of a chance to do any damage. There’s a swing and a drive. that one back there and makes the grab. And that is that. Toronto extends the lead on the solo shot. It’s now 93. You’re watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show. Well, we go bottom six. Here’s the catcher, Nick Forez. And first offering is fouled off the pitch. Now one and one activity in the bullpen. Tommy Nance preparing to come on if needed. Little also throwing. swing and a highf fly ball pretty well struck right field. Springer drop step going back pulls it in on the warning track now batting and stepping in for the Rays Josh Low taking high in the draft. He’s had that top prospect label over him since he put on a professional uniform. But at some point that starts to go away and you’ve got to produce at the big league level. And it stays fair. Now he turns and heads for second. The throw in. Not in time. He’s safe. No waiting around right there. He was ready to swing it on the first pitch. There’s something about pulling one down the line and shooting it through the infield that’s just so satisfying as a hitter. It’s just fun turning on a pitch like he did right there. Could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game. Here comes the skipper and we’re going to see a pitching change in this spot. That’s it for Shane Beamer. Just never found his groove. Wasn’t able to settle in. New arm coming on. Back in a moment. Now on the bump, Yariel Rodriguez. and he’s got a nice lead to work with. So, he should come in throwing strikes, attacking these hitters. Bandit second with one away. Everson Pereira next to hit for the Rays. That one fouled off. way out front for strike two. That misses now. One and two. Runner at second here. One gone. And there’s a ball up the middle. Clement slings to first in time. Now batting number 77. And now Carson Williams, one for two. And this is a big opportunity for him to pick up his teammate right here. That one not close. And that is ball one. Two outs and one in scoring position. That one’s spoiled and the count now two and one. Really great change of speeds. He goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn’t know what’s coming next. And that one fouled off. Two outs. Struck him out looking. The Rays strand just the one. Still way back. It’s 93. Well, this game isn’t very close. Singy. Let’s see if we got any messages from those tuning in today. I know we got some good stuff in there, Singy. One of the biggest ways the game has changed, bullpen arms. So many elite level bullpen arms. Yeah, and I’m glad I’m not playing anymore. I mean, it’s just a nightmare. When that door swings open out of the bullpen, you know what’s coming in is 95 and above with at least one nasty pitch. Check swing, but he went too far. Now he’s in a one-two hole. Misses the zone for a ball. That was the sweeper. The other component is you get less viewings of a specific pitcher. So your ability to go to school on one guy, you maybe get two looks at him and then he’s gone. Yeah. And I mean, these guys utilize the iPads and try to see previous footage of that picture, but it’s just not the same as having an actual look. Let’s do it. Tampa. Ground ball right side. It squirts through. figure it out. Man aboard on the leadoff single. You know, I was watching his rounds during batting practice today. So impressed with his ability to let the ball travel, go back up the middle and the other way. Sometimes when you step in the box during the game, you get a little anxious and you get away from that. But so far, I’ve seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation. Next to hit, Joey Lrafido. [Applause] late with the swing there. Ruer at first with no outs here. [Music] Swings through it and that’s a strike out. Now batting Andres Jimenez the next to hit. You talk about elite defensive players, especially in the middle of the diamond, and this guy is at the top of the list. He swings and fouls one off on the ground. Two ball over to Lao and it’s a double play to end the inning. No runs, one hit, no errors, and no one left. Midway in inning number seven, and it’s time to stretch. Jay’s nine and the Rays three. Back here at Tropicana Field, set for the last half of the seventh. Now up for Tampa Bay, Bobby Seymour. Yeah, we go beyond just the, you know, fielding percentage and, you know, what it looks like, but the ability to have range and, you know, close holes that, you know, are normally there against an average defender. But this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness. Check swing. Did he go? Yes, he did. And the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slump and defense shouldn’t either. Hittingwise, you can struggle. you can lose your mechanics, but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play great defense if you’re talented in that way. And this is what this guy does. Going to count one and two way high. [Applause] And that one’s a little bit low. Ball three. Gets a piece there. We’ll do it again. [Music] Now a high-f fly ball out to left center. Bar show after it and he makes the catch and there’s one down. Now batting designated hitter Gandi Diaz. Yandi Diaz now possibly thinking about home run number 100 here. He’s just one shy of that milestone. And that’s a strike. Well, they say it’s the best pitch in baseball. Strike one. You get ahead on a good hitter as well. Gives you a little bit more confidence to move through the at bat. Base is empty. One away here. The bottom of the seventh. And he’s down 02 as he swings through it. and delivers outside. The only adjustment he needs to make is his target. If you aim at the outside corner, that slider’s going to end up way off the plate. Perhaps look a little more down the middle and you get it right where you want it. Line drive. And this might be trouble. Makes the turn and heads for second. And he’s in with a stand up double. Everything came together perfectly for him right there. Really good swing right there. He got a pitch that he knew he could handle. Allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws. Now it’s going to be Junior Camro. so clutch. You could argue that he’s been this team’s MVP this year. And there’s the strike. And that misses. And now it’s even one and one. Diaz the runner at second with one away. Check swing called strike. One and two. Two strikes. Do it again. That one missed. He’s great hitting the ball the other way and that pitch did a good job to straighten him up a bit. Mission accomplished. Ground ball right side and it goes just fouled. And it’s fouled off. They’ll do it again. Eighth pitch of the at coming up. That’s off the mark. And that’s ball three. Swings through that one. It’s a strike out. Well, that’s the effect of the splitter that you’re looking for on the mound. Really nice pitch right there and had him out in front over the top. I’m sure the batter was thinking he was getting something else. Perhaps a fast ball with a little more straight and vo to it. swing and a ball hammered left field. That’s bad. Makes the catch on the edge of the track. This one pretty well decided at this point. We look ahead to inning number eight. Jay’s nine and the Rays three. Here’s George Springer and a chance to make some history here, Chris. Yeah, he’s homerred three times so far and now he gets another chance. At least we think. We’ll see if the pitcher gives him anything to hit. It’s so rare to see a three homer performance, but even more special for that player to get another chance at the plate to do it again for four. [Music] Seymour back to work. Hard ground ball. Base knock. Now batting the designated hitter, Davis Schneider. So a man at first at the plate. Davis Schneider just missed. hard grounder into the outfield for a knock. Lead runner to second. So, two on and nobody out. Love how he let that ball travel, trusted his hands. Nice job of going the other way. And here’s the first baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. just missed. Ripped to right. Base hit. Here comes Springer around third. The throws offline. He’s saved. It’s 103. Now batting third base stepping in Addison Barer. first offering and it just misses. Well, he’s just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter. Might be a good time for somebody to call a timeout. Maybe the pitching coach go out there and talk to him just a little bit. That’s a strike across the top of the zone. Swings and hits one in the air out towards right field. Brings it in. Runner tagging from third. throw is offline and he scores and it’s an eight-run lead. In that situation, you’re looking to get something up in the zone that you can put in the air. Worst case scenario, a sacrifice fly to drive in that runner from third. And next for Toronto, Alejandro Kirk. He is at the top of the game in terms of defense at the catching spot. It’s so impressive because these guys have to do so much study and preparation for their pitchers, for opposing hitters, and really their number one job is to guide that staff through a ball game. And so when you also can turn it up offensively and be a force there, that is a win-win, every manager’s dream. Guerrero at first, one gone. That misses the zone. It’s a ball in two strikes. [Music] Ground ball could be two to second for one. Double play and that’ll do it for the inning. So, two runs on three hits, no errors, no one left. Last half of the eighth coming up. Jay’s 11 and the Rays three. Back now in Tampa Bay. Now here is Christopher Morell. Christopher Morel [Applause] just off the inside edge. Boo. He never moved because he never had time to. With that kind of velocity, you’d prefer that pitcher work away. Whacked out to center field. That’s well struck. That’s back there. Tattooed to Tater Town and gone. His second home run of the series. It’s 114. [Applause] Well, he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time, took a direct path to the ball, excellent extension, and just drove it out of here. Nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that. Manager out of the dugout now, and it looks like we’ll see a change on the mound. Yariel Rodriguez gives way and as he heads for the dugout, we’ll take a quick break. New arm on the mound when we get back. Tommy N gets handed the rock out of the pen. Compared to some days, this is a pretty low leverage appearance for him. So, he should be fairly free and easy out there. Still have to keep yourself sharp and attack the strike zone. Now the catcher up to hit Nick Forez [Applause] and first offering is fouled off. Nance in his third season. He features a slider, a sinker and occasionally mixes in the slurve. Nance sets, fires. Nobody on, nobody out with a run in near the bottom half of the eighth inning. And that’s downstairs and outside. hacks and misses. It’s a strikeout. Well, that’s a blue zone right there or the cold zone on the hitting chart. Just doesn’t have much success in that part of the strike zone. And a really good job of the pitcher executing. Try to go there as often as you can. The numbers are in your favor. Josh Low now at the plate. and he grounds one to the right side. Clement over to first and there’s two away. Now batting center fielder Everson Pereira. Two outs. Space is empty. And now the center fielder Everson Pereira 0 for three in this one. Pitch misses outside and that’s ball one. Movement in the bullpen. Sir Anthony Dominguez, the hardthrowing righty is up and loosening. And another ball. Two down to bat that’s in there and the count two and one. Nasty two slider there for a strike. That tells you he’s got a lot of confidence in that pitch. And that one pulled foul. Fouled off and they’ll do it again. Two outs. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. went back to the slider and it was a good idea, but a solo home run will at least get this closer to respectability. Ninth inning coming up. You’re watching Major League Baseball on the show. We’re back. It’s the top of the ninth and there’s a new pitcher on the mound, Cole Szer. And with the big deficit on the scoreboard, he almost has to just put that out of his mind. Every outing matters for relievers in their numbers, but I think it’s tough to get up for this type of appearance the same way you would for one in a close game. And now for the Jays, Dalton Vo. And it may be a long shot, but a triple here will give him the cycle. Oh, he doesn’t get the call. Ball one. That one down the line and that’s just foul. Worm burner into the outfield for a knock. So, a runner aboard to start the Here’s the second baseman, Ernie Clement, in there for a strike at the top of the zone. Varo gets his lead at first. Nobody out. Come on, let’s get And it’s one and one. Tampa Bay’s bullpen with some action. Griffin Jacks warming up for manager Kevin Cash. Clevenger getting cranked up as well. The one-1 is fouled off. [Applause] in the air. Left field down the line and that’s a fair ball. Lead runner holds up. They’re at first and second with nobody out. Now batting left fielder Joey Lido. So digging in Joey Lopido. And a breaking ball misses outside. One ball. No strike. And that is out of play. First and second, no outs here in the top of the ninth. swings and sends a rocket to right. Low snags it. Runner tags it second to third. Not in time. And it’s runners at the corners with one gone. Not fooled at all right there. He was clearly all over it. But sometimes you hit it too hard and right at someone. You’re looking for one of those bloop hits to get a knock sometimes. swing and a ball popped up. Williams has this one sized up. Puts it away for the and there’s two down. So, two down now and here is George Springer. Ball one, no strikes. Swings through that one for strike one. One ball runners at the corners with two outs. And that misses and it’s two and one. Two on, two outs. Swinging a liner foul off to the right. Here’s [Music] the 22 count. Swing and a pop off in foul ground. Catcher tosses the mask, settles under it, squeezes it, and that’ll do it. Blue Jays leave a pair. They lead it though 11 to four. And we’re back. So bottom of the ninth and stepping in for the Rays, Carson Williams. Pitch misses inside and it’s one and0. And that drops in for a strike. In this situation, you expect the batters to be a little more patient, possibly take until they get a strike. With that, you don’t want to miss your opportunity to get ahead early in the count. He didn’t right there. swing and a miss and the count one and two. He’s been able to go inside as well as outside effectively working both sides of the plate in this at bat. Two, two, scorched to center. No doubt about it. That is long gone. His fourth home run of the season. It’s 115. [Applause] Anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate, the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage. Even if it’s a pretty good sinker like that one. Nice piece of hitting there at the plate. [Applause] And now the first baseman, Bobby Seymour. [Applause] Just missed. The Rays with a lot of ground to make up here in the last half of inning number nine. Do it again. Oh, can’t pick it up cleanly. Still fires to first and they get the out. Good recovery. Wasn’t easy following the misplay. hitter Yandi Diaz. Yandi Diaz next to hit for the Rays. Splits the plate and that is strike one. Nance, a guy that features an absolute power slider. Throws that pitch a lot. He throws it hard and gets a ton of swings and misses. One out. Base is empty and a run in. We’re in the last half of the ninth inning. Next pitch is outside. Ball two. And I think being able to expand with that pitch as you start to offer at it that he can move it just a little bit further away. Before you know it, you’re trying to hit a pitch that’s off the plate. battling here as he fouls it away. The 2-2 gets a piece and stays alive. [Applause] And that one is downstairs. And it’s three and two. And that’s ball four. That’s a great at bat. He saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk. Well, that’s a nice job of grinding out that at bat. Saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk. Very gritty here in the bottom of the ninth. One out. Now the number two hitter, Junior Camro, lined it into left center field and that’s going to fall for a hit and now two aboard. Didn’t take long to get a result for that at bat. Nice line drive to the pull side right there, but he didn’t spin off of it. That’s the key. You still have to extend through the baseball in order to hit a line drive like that. So, first and second with one gone. And here is Brandon. La. [Music] That misses the zone. And that’s ball one. And that one is inside. Well, they gave up the home run earlier in this inning. Not pitching as aggressively here. [Applause] And a base hit coming home. Here’s the throw to the plate. Safe. It’s 11 to six. Backto back singles. Nice job of driving that pitch the other way on a line. You know, hitters, they take so many reps in the cages, working on going to the opposite field, and it doesn’t always translate into the game, but right there it did. And he did it perfectly. Here comes the manager out of the Blue Jays dugout and he will make a move to the pen. Tommy Nance departs and the line not closed on him yet as he’s responsible for the runners on base. Back with a new pitcher after this. The new pitcher in the game, Sir Anthony Dominguez, and he’s had a really hard time throwing strikes so far this season. His walk rate is up there among the worst in the league for relievers. First and second, one out. Digging in, Christopher Morurell and ball one, one out, runners at first and second. [Music] Next offering is downstairs. That misses off the outside edge. Next offering is in for a strike. Camro the lead runner out at second. Lao at first. One gone. It’s a tough pitch, but in terms of the best pitch you’re going to get to hit in the at bat, that fast ball was down enough where you’re going to catch up to one. That’s the one. When he elevates, hitters aren’t touched it. Fights it off. He’ll see another [Music] swing and a miss. Struck him out. Now only one out remaining. Now batting. So up next, Nick Forz. This is a guy who’s in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively, Chris. And when you talk about preventing runs from being scored, this guy is a big contributor. I was always told it’s hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense, especially at a premier position. And that’s what he does. The hitting’s going to come around. He’s going to figure it out. But right now, his big asset is the way he plays the game on defense. First and second, two down. [Applause] inside. Just missed. That turns out to be a really good take right there, but you don’t want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder. Dominguez is just one strike away. Swing and a miss. Struck him out. And that is the ball game. Well, with this sixth win in a row, all of a sudden, you start to look around up and down in the lineup. to your left, to your right as a player and you say, you know what, we’re good. Uh we may have had some tough times earlier on, but this is a good team and you start to expect this kind of play out of yourselves. We’ll see if this translates into a longer winning streak than it is right now. 116 the final in this one for Chris Singleton and our entire crew here at MLB the show. Thanks for stopping by. I’m John Shami. Talk to you soon.
